to the April issue
How much can happen in a month? At the time or writing this we are sat waiting on news regarding possible school, college, large event closures due to Covid-19. This situation is something none of us have seen before, the supermarket shelves are being stripped and places are so quiet as people start to avoid largely populated areas. 2020 will certainly be a year that has a spot in the history books. For now, we are business as usual – I cannot stress that now is the time to be supporting the local businesses as it is going to be a very difficult time for us all. We can help by supporting the independent business owners ride this wave of uncertainty. Remember to ask elderly neighbours or those unable to get out if they need help as many are isolated with no friends or family nearby. In this issue we look at ideas for Easter activities, what the hair and beauty trends are for Spring and also what Long Sutton has to offer. Laura has two beautiful recipes to try including a yummy cheesecake which I most definitely will be trying over Easter. Finally find out how Otis explores Jenny’s Wood near Boston and Tim test drives the Seat Tarraco. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, stay safe and see you next month!

Book now to see the dinosaurs at Peterborough Cathedral
Peterborough Cathedral has announced that tickets are now on sale for T. rex: The Killer Question, the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition which will be on show at the Cathedral from 20th July to 31st August 2020. The exhibition, which was last seen in the UK at Longleat in 2018, includes a 12-metre-long static model of a T. rex as well as a life-size T. rex skeleton and nine animatronic dinosaurs. It poses the killer question: Was T. rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? To help visitors answer the question, the exhibition presents scenes showing the behaviour of several different dinosaur species, from the small and agile Sauronitholestes, to the savage Dromaeosaurus and the plant-eating Tenontosaurus. It also shows examples of bones and fossils to see what they can tell us about T. rex. The roaring of animatronic dinosaurs will come from the early sixteenth century ‘New Building’ at the far end of the Cathedral where
6 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
the exhibition will be on display. On Wednesdays there will be a special ‘quiet hour’ at around 11.00am for visitors who prefer to see the dinosaurs without sound and movement. This also means that the regular 11.00am service of Holy Communion can go ahead undisturbed. On Thursdays during the exhibition there will be fun-packed craft and storytelling sessions for children, entitled ‘To Extinction and Beyond’. Sessions will run at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 2.30pm each week and will focus on a different aspect of dinosaurs, from eggs to extinction to fossils. Nearer the time, it will also be possible to book tower top climbs and family-friendly Cathedral tours on selected dates. The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said: “People have asked how we could possibly follow Tim Peake’s Spacecraft or Luke Jerram’s amazing artworks, but knowing how popular dinosaurs are at the Natural History Museum in London, we feel that this will be a fitting sequel.
It’s going to be a great day out for families, not just to see T. rex and his friends, but also to spend time exploring this wonderful Cathedral and asking our own big questions about the world and our place in it.” Alex Burch, Head of Public Programmes at the Natural History Museum said: “We are thrilled to be bringing T. rex: The Killer Question to Peterborough. We hope that the exhibition will be able to educate and entertain an entirely new audience about dinosaurs, specifically the awe-inspiring T. rex. It is our hope that these exciting animals that once roamed our planet can inspire a love of the natural world and motivate people to protect our shared earth.” In due course, volunteers will be recruited to help with various aspects of running the exhibition. All tickets are available via the Cathedral’s website www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/t. rex or by calling 01733 355315 during office hours.

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick One of my many councillor roles is as a governor of Boston College, which is both rewarding and at times quite challenging. We have recently appointed a new Principal which in itself is quite a process. We are delighted to welcome Claire Foster from Grimsby College who will be taking over from the excellent Jo Maher who is moving back to Loughborough. While there are lots of exciting build projects going on at the main Boston campus, including the new Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology Centre, which will be opened on March 12th by a Minister from the Department of
Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages.... Education, there is equally plenty going on at the newly named Spalding Campus in Red Lion Street. Last year, Boston College invested over £200,000 into its Spalding Campus, supporting plans to expand and develop the delivery of Higher Education in the area. The investment saw the development of a large lecture room, two classrooms, a breakaway study room and social area, specifically purposed to support adult education. The College’s vision for growing Higher Education within Spalding is to offer higher level qualifications
to the local community, inspiring and enabling them to pursue and develop their career aspirations. The College has worked closely with Spalding Town Library, ( I am also the Executive member with responsibility for Libraries at Lincolnshire County Council!), who are fully supporting the opportunities available to students and the College’s plans to expand the Higher Education provision within the town. The development is a major boost for the local community, making Higher Education and adult learning more accessible to all. The College has also continued
to develop its valuable partnership with the University of Derby. Starting in 2018 offering a BA (Hons) Education Studies, the current offer of courses has expanded to include Postgraduate Certificate in Education Post 14 (Education and Training), Business BA (Hons) and an Education Studies BA (Hons) Top‐up. The current provision for the Spalding Campus in 2020 also includes the option to study, a Children and Young People (Teaching Assistant) FdA as well as Higher National Diplomas in Business and Public Services. Further to these qualifications, the College also offers a wide range of HNDs in subjects such as Art and Design, Computing, Engineering, Fashion and Textiles, Music, Performing Arts, Media, Graphic Design, Photography and Sport at its campuses in Boston. Applications and full course information for September 2020 is online at www.boston.ac.uk or contact the College ‘s Spalding Campus directly on 01775 715880 for further details or to book a free and impartial careers advice appointment. Finally I am also attending the College’s Apprentice Awards evening as I write this. This is the rewarding part of the job and is really pleasing that on completion of their courses, in many cases these apprentices are offered full time employment and career opportunities that they would not have otherwise had. Long may it continue.
Nick

Advice
Checking if You Can Get Statutory Sick Pay If you work (and aren’t self-employed), you’re legally entitled to get Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) as long as you: • have started work with your employer • are sick for 4 full days or more in a row (including non-working days) • earn on average at least £118 per week (before tax) • are not in one of the ineligible categories • follow your employer’s rules for getting sick pay You’re still entitled to SSP if you work part-time or on a fixed-term contract. If you’re an agency or casual worker working on an assignment when you get ill, you might be entitled to SSP until that assignment ends. If you’re an agency or casual worker working on an assignment when you get ill, you might be entitled to SSP until that assignment ends, or possibly beyond if you’ve already agreed to another assignment. You won’t get SSP if you fall ill while not on assignment. You should ask your employer for sick pay if you are on a zero hours contract. If they say no, ask them to explain why. You can get £94.25 per week for up to 28 weeks with SSP, but your employer might pay you more (they can’t pay you less). So check your contract to see what it says about sick pay - this is called ‘contractual sick pay’. If you haven’t been given a contract or it’s not in there, ask your employer or check your staff handbook or intranet. You won’t get SSP if you: • are self-employed • have already had SSP for 28 weeks (and the 28 weeks ended within the last 8 weeks)
s U o t k l Ta
• had Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in the last 12 weeks • are getting statutory maternity pay or Maternity Allowance • are pregnant, your baby is due in 4 weeks or less and your illness is pregnancy-related • had a baby in the last 14 weeks (or the last 18 weeks if your baby was born over 4 weeks early) • are in the armed forces • are in legal custody (detained either by the police or in prison) • are an agricultural worker (read about agricultural sick pay on GOV.UK) There can be a number of issues relating to getting SSP if you’re pregnant, you’re returning to work after getting maternity pay, you’re in hospital, you have more than one employer, you’re getting your pension or you’re involved in a trade dispute. If you’re not getting the pay you’re entitled to, for example if your employer says they can’t afford to pay, you can take steps to get the money you’re owed. If you think you’re entitled to SSP but your employer says you’re not and refuses to pay it, you should contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or HMRC’s Statutory Payments Disputes Team. Telephone: 03000 560630 Calls can cost up to 12p a minute from landlines, and between 3p and 45p a minute from mobiles. If your employer says you’re not entitled to sick pay, ask them to give you a written explanation of their reasons. They should give you this on a form called Statutory sick pay and an employee’s claim for benefit (SSP1). They should give you this within 7 days of you going off sick. You’ll need the SSP1 form to claim benefits. They should also give you back any doctor’s notes you gave them. If your employer hasn’t given you form SSP1, ask them for a written statement explaining why you can’t get SSP. You could also give them a copy of the form to fill in. If you can’t get form SSP1 or a written statement from your employer, contact HMRC’s employees’ enquiry line on 0300 200 3500. They’ll ask your employer why they think you’re not entitled to SSP. You’ll need to have this information ready when you to talk to HMRC: • your name, address and national insurance number • your employer’s name and contact details • your payroll number • details of when you were off sick and what your employer said when asked for sick pay and the SSP1 form For further information on this matter and anything relating to it, contact your nearest Citizens Advice to speak to a trained assessor/ adviser. Boston College On Thursday 12th March 2020, Nadhim Zahawi MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Business and Industry), attended Boston College to officially open the Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology Centre (EMAT). The new £4.3 million state-ofthe-art centre was developed with funding from the Greater Lincolnshire Skills Capital Investment Programme (GLLEP) and Midlands Engine. The new building provides an industrydriven training facility that will stimulate growth and productivity across the sector with its innovative workshops and suites. Acting as a hub for local engineering and manufacturing, the centre offers the opportunity for agri-tech businesses to create a partnership with the College to help train the engineers in line with industry needs. EMAT includes an innovative hub, two workshops that will provide space for traditional engineering and manufacturing skills and modern industry practices, an electronics laboratory, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/ CAM) suite, three classrooms, and a break-out space. As part of the opening ceremony, Minister Zahawi was taken on a guided tour of the facility, where he observed and spoke with learners who are currently training to become engineers of the future, before delivering a short address to attendees and officially opening the Centre. Following the official opening of the centre, Minister Zahawi said, “The new facility at Boston College brings together some of the UK’s finest academics, students and local businesses, all of whom will be instrumental to helping us realise the UK’s engineering and manufacturing potential.” “By boosting crucial skills and fuelling local growth, this state-ofthe-art building will help our local
12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
agriculture and manufacturing businesses stay at the forefront of the technology revolution.” Other guests at the opening included Matt Warman MP, Mayor of Boston Cllr Anton Dani, Cllr Paul Skinner, Pat Doody (Chair of GLLEP) and Ruth Carver (GLLEP Chief Executive) as well as Boston College governors, local employers and school representatives. Pat Doody, Chair of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “The EMAT Centre forms part of the LEP’s £7.34m Skills Capital Investment Fund Programme, which aims to strengthen our local training infrastructure to respond more effectively to business needs and enable employers to upskill their existing workforce or attract relevant skills locally. “Our £2.8m grant will support key strategic sectors and invigorate and support innovation for businesses, stimulating economic growth through access to resources and advice. “As one of the key sites making up the emerging Lincolnshire Institute for Technology, the EMAT Centre will undoubtedly help our young people achieve their ambitions and realise their full potential.” Boston College Principal and Chief Executive, Jo Maher added, “We are honoured that Minister Zahawi has opened our brand-new EMAT centre and extremely grateful for the support and funding provided by the GLLEP. EMAT is part of £10m learner focussed investment on our campus, to help develop the highly advanced knowledge, skills, and behaviours our learners need for careers in a technology-driven world.” Boston College is delighted to be leading the way into Industry 4.0, developing and changing the future for the next generation of Engineers in addition to bridging the skills gap in the local and wider economy.
Ayscoughfee Hall School
Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School have been as busy as ever both in and out of their classrooms. Sport has featured heavily in recent weeks with netball and football matches and both local and regional cross country competitions in which the children performed very well. The Hockey ‘A’ term won the Agilitas tournament and now go through to the regional finals whilst all the Junior children gave gym displays to the rest of the school and their parents. StarLincs Planetarium visited school and Year 1 and Year 5 children enjoyed a morning star gazing and learning about the planets. Not to be out done, Year 3 spent a day at the Peterborough Museum dressed as Romans, sourcing
ingredients for a banquet and handling real Roman artefacts. Year 2 meanwhile, completed their work on fire safety by visiting the local fire station where they were able to learn more about the work of fire fighters and have a go at using a high-pressure hose. The whole school took part in the NSPCC Maths Challenge Day and had a great time engaged in practical maths activities whilst raising money for this great charity. Kindergarten , having had a visit from a Guide Dog, chose to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind and over £250 was raised for the Australian Relief Fund through a cake sale planned by a Reception pupil and Eco Club and the sale of bracelets made by a Year 1 pupil.

The Mirror and the Light by Hilary Mantel
Library members at Spalding can use their library card to get free and fast access to the internet, email and MS Office packages following a refresh of all public IT facilities.
Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen, before Jane dies giving birth to the male heir he most craves. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army. Reserve your copy of the 3rd title in the Wolf Hall series today!
Improvements include the installation of new printing facilities, including multifunction devices for copying, printing and scanning. The new PaperCut printing systems allows library customers to send documents to print over WiFi or from home using their own devices. It’s been a wet and windy few weeks but that doesn’t worry our hound about town. He’s waterproof, waggly and always raring to go!

ell! Now, I know we Labradors are obsessed with food, but I honestly think my big and little girl humans are even worse! The three of us tootle along in the car, ready for a walkies around Jenny’s Wood on the outskirts of Boston, when we suddenly go off grid. ‘Why is my mouth watering?’ I woof. Ah, now I know - food is being passed through the driver’s window! Wow! We park up. ‘Here you go Otis, have a bite of my burger,’ says the smaller human, generously. I eat it all. She screams. ‘Here you are dear, have my meal,’ says the bigger one, begrudgingly. Goody! ‘NOT YOU OTIS!!!’ Oh. It’s a blustery day but that doesn’t spoil our saunter around this delightful young wood. We wander along a path lined with rustic fitness equipment. My little girl and I bark with laughter as
Keep Everyone Happy
this Easter
Kids need to be kept entertained, especially during the school holidays. But there’s no need to break the bank – our guide is packed with free and cheap activities to keep the little ones occupied. Farms are a great place to visit with young children to interact and see animals up close. Many offer lamb feeding and have play areas available too, they make a full day out with a picnic. The beach is another winner in our house, even on a cooler day if you’re wrapped up. Children of all ages love looking in rock pools, collecting treasure, looking for fossils, building sandcastles or
playing games. We are just an hour from some lovely beaches, so make the most of it! If you have National Trust membership then make sure you check out the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt locations at https://easter. cadbury.co.uk/ where you can join in hunting for chocolate from as little as £2. If the weather isn’t looking pleasant there are lots of activities
FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY! our big human attempts to leapfrog over the specially installed posts. ‘Pull up bars next?’ I ask her. ‘After you, doggo,’ she pants. ‘Me? I’m not the one training for a half marathon,’ I wag, smugly. I have a nice chat with several four legged friends, and a jolly good sniff of the air, the ground and the smaller human. ‘You smell different,’ I tell her, ‘a bit like a damp dog.’ ‘That’ll be you, silly,’ she smiles, ‘you’re running through all the puddles!’ Ooops. It’s fair to say that once we’re all back in the car it’s as muddy inside as it is outside. I’m excited to go home and get my soggy paws all over my human’s clean floors. But it looks like I’ll have to wait, because we are pulling into a pub. The girls are hungry again! I hope dogs are allowed in…

Advice Worth Hearing!
Y
ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life. If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business, with full time hearing centres located in Market Deeping, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Kirton Medical Centre, Clark Family Eyecare in Donington & J.Neville Opticians in Whittlesey. We are proud to have some of the most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment. We can also provide hearing tests

in the comfort of your own home if more appropriate. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with many years of experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.
How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.
What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality of life & those around you. It’s never too early to look after your hearing. Help yourself & those around you and book a free assessment with us now. It really can make a world of difference! www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 19
Health & Beauty
Spring Hair & Beauty Trends Something about the sun shining brightly on a more regular basis makes people more inclined to try new beauty trends during the spring season. This hasn’t been scientifically proven, but it’s my own hypothesis as a beauty editor of six years. Add in the fact there’s been a surge in fun looks from the runway on a mainstream stage and more people than ever before are experimenting with hair and makeup!
Hairstylists Predict These Will Be
the Biggest Hair Trends of 2020 The first thing you should know is that short hair will be super popular in 2020. Generally speaking, long locks are out - short hair trend will be a sort of “backlash for the monster long-hair extension trend” that we witnessed over the past few years. If there’s one short hairstyle that will reign supreme, it’s the classic bob. Women want more versatility and can easily achieve a sleek and sophisticated bob with the right length for their face. Or, if they cut it to hit collarbone length, they can add tousled texture for a more youthful and casual look. We’re taking a step back from the blunt-cut bobs and are going with a style that’s slightly longer and piece-y throughout, for a softer appearance. Hairstylists agree that it’s not just bobs that are going to look textured this year, it’s every hairstyle. That’s because texture will continue to be a big topic in 2020. Instead of super-sleek, over-styled hair, we’re going to see more natural texture, whether that means tousled and relaxed hair or curly and coily hair. (and we’re so happy to hear it). Whatever your natural texture is, embrace it! Instead of taking it away with heat tools, accentuate it with heat tools. Natural texture is definitely in. With that being said, when it comes to heat styling, beach waves are going to continue being all the rage for 2020. They’re soft, tousled, and relaxed, so a good texture spray (and a high-quality heat tool) will definitely come in handy.

Prepare to see a return of fringe in the Spring. Adding bangs to a bob haircut can quickly and easily give it a cool vintage vibe. If you’re not convinced then why not try out curtain bangs, which are the iconic face-framing bangs made famous by ‘60s stars like Brigitte Bardot. Curtain fringes will definitely make a comeback as more retro styles gain popularity. They’re low maintenance and can easily be grown out into faceframing layers— perfect for any face shape and suits every hair type. Icy platinum blonde had an epic reign as the trendiest hair colour among the fashion and beauty elite, but it seems like it’s finally coming to an end. Warmer hair colours will be huge in the upcoming year—from warm blondes to auburn highlights and mahogany spice balayage. We’ll see a lot of colours that don’t require much upkeep and will grow out nicely using techniques like face-framing highlights that’ll brighten up the look. They’re back! The final hair trend for 2020 is accessories, accessories, accessories! Think a pearl and rhinestone clip obsession, but it will definitely transition in 2020 with way more—think more minimal looks as well as headbands and big ‘90s scrunchies.
Bright Eye
Makeup
Blending various shades of eye shadow together can no doubt be beautiful, but when you’re working with neon or bright colors, it isn’t necessary. One is enough! Using a single bright shade is not only a major makeup trend, but it’s easier than messing with multiple hues. Simply apply a bright eye shadow of your choosing to your lids, then use a clean brush to soften any harsh lines. When it comes to wearing bright eye shadows, you aren’t limited to a wash of colour on your eyelids. For a pop of unexpected colour, keep your upper lash line bare and bring the brightness downward, placing the shadow along your lower lash line instead. Using a small eye brush (or a cotton wool bud), smudge a colourful eye shadow against your lashes.
SEE GREAT. LOOK AMAZING. FEEL FANTASTIC.

Long Sut
A little town with a huge heart, Long Sutton is brimming with character, charm and colour. With a rich historical past and a full and fabulous future, this jewel of the wash is a market town not to be missed. From flowers to furniture, haircuts to hardware, Long Sutton’s centre has it all. Whether you would like new clothes, a chemist or a slice of cake, or you need to buy food for your pet or perhaps see the vet, this is the town to visit. Long Sutton locals are lucky enough to have access to so many facilities all in one place – their vibrant town. At this time of year spring is blooming and Long Sutton is booming – with businesses both new and established and building projects
all around. Are you familiar with Long Sutton’s history? How far back can you remember? One former resident laughed as he told Simply Spalding one of his main memories of the town – the vast number of pubs it used to boast! Some still remain, some are now houses. Did you know there used to be a cinema called The Gem which was on the site now occupied by the Premier shop? And over the road from this was Long Sutton’s very own railway station, where you
22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
could catch a train to Hunstanton. There is no doubt the landscape has changed – from the ground up! Long Sutton once sat on the coast of The Wash. Now it is completely inland. Buildings have been repaired, restored and renovated, to give this immaculately kept town the outlook both locals and visitors enjoy today. It’s fair to say The Bull Hotel is one of the most famous landmarks in Long Sutton. This imposing Grade II listed building marks the corner of the marketplace, where many shops are located and Friday’s busy market can be found. St Mary’s Church towers majestically over the town and dominates the skyline magnificently. The town is rightfully proud of St Mary’s, which this year celebrates its 850th birthday! Drive past it on the main road and you will see the unmissable sign boasting, ‘Britain’s highest, oldest, most perfect timber spire’! And don’t forget one rather unusual town talking point – the whalebone arch which can be found in Cinder Ash Park. Moving from famous to infamous, legend has it Dick Turpin spent some time in Long Sutton. This connection with the highwayman can be seen subtly in the town. Long Sutton County Primary School is located on Dick Turpin Way! The town is home to some pretty innovative designs. Enter Long Sutton from either direction along the B1359 (or the old A17 as locals call it) and you are greeted by environmentally conscious constructions. Approach from the west and you will see Hoddins Way Business Park, which is a carbon neutral business zone. Come into town from the east and you find
Unity Gardens – eco-friendly earthsheltered homes built around a decade ago. Keep coming in from this direction and pay a visit to Long Sutton Common Pit. A delightful place to look for wildlife including moorhens, wagtails and, of course, ducks! Watch out for them crossing the road too. Official signs have been put up specifically to warn drivers, because these feathery friends show zero signs of developing any road sense! The Common Pit has a dear little history all of its own, having been used to provide passing livestock with a much needed drink in its past.

groups, clubs, classes and film showings. There is also a sporting tradition in the town too, with clubs playing cricket, hockey and football – with Long Sutton Athletic FC affectionately known as The Magpies. Loaded Easter Cheesecake This is the ideal dessert for entertaining friends and family this Easter. This recipe uses crème eggs and mini eggs as the goodies, but substitute with your favourites
Ingredients
1 hour prep, 6 hours chilling
Makes: approx 12 portions
Crispy Cake Base • • • •
300g milk chocolate 100g butter 4 tbsp golden syrup 100g rice crispies
Cheesecake • • • • •
300g double cream 100g icing sugar, sifted 300g full fat soft cheese Juice of ½ a lemon 4 crème eggs, roughly chopped
Topping • • • •
200g white chocolate Orange food colour 8 crème eggs 160g mini eggs
Method 1. 2.
Line the bottom of an 8 inch round spring formed tin with greaseproof paper Melt half of the milk chocolate, the butter and the golden syrup in either a bain marie (glass bowl set on top of a simmering pan of water) or in the microwave (keep checking the mixture if you melt the mixture in the microwave) 3. Add the melted mixture to the rice crispies and stir thoroughly 4. Add the rice crispy mixture to the prepared tin – press the mixture into the tin so it is even and compact – leave to set for at least an hour 5. Melt the remaining half of the milk chocolate (in either method of your choice) – leave to cool slightly, then evenly spread on top of the set rice crispy base – leave to set for another hour 6. Whisk the double cream in a bowl to form soft peaks, add in the icing sugar, cream cheese and lemon juice – whisk together until combined 7. Fold through the chopped cream eggs 8. Spoon the cheesecake mixture on top of the set chocolate layer and spread evenly – leave to set for approx. 4 hours 9. Run a knife around the edge of the tin to loosen the cheesecake mixture, release the spring on the tin and carefully set aside the outer ring 10. Remove from the base of the tin and peel away the greaseproof paper – place onto a board or plate of your choice 11. Melt the remaining white chocolate (in either method of your choice) – set aside about a quarter to use later 12. Leave the remaining three quarters to cool slightly, then stir in orange food colouring until it looks the same colour as the centre of a crème egg 13. Spoon the orange coloured white chocolate all around the top edge of the cheesecake, pushing it over the edge every so often to create a drip effect 14. Cut the crème eggs in halves / quarters and scatter in the centre of the cheesecake, creating a mound 15. Chop some of the mini eggs and keep some whole – scatter over the top of the cheesecake 16. Finish but drizzling the left over white chocolate all over the cheesecake

This year Molsom & Associates are excited to announce that their Sunglass Celebration day will be held over Friday 29th May and Saturday 30th May from 9.00am until 4.30pm each day. During the two-day event they will have a representative present from Maui Jim sunglasses who will be showcasing their full 2020 range.
T
here will be a Facebook giveaway in the weeks before the event, so make sure you head to @ molsomandassociates and like the page so you don’t miss out. There will be a free to enter prize draw, which all visitors viewing the range of Maui Jim’s on the Friday and Saturday can enter. Don’t let the children miss out either. Molsom & Associates are also having a competition for all under 11’s to enter. Simply grab an entry form and draw the best picture you can of Molsom Mole enjoying the sun, the winner will be drawn over the Sunglass celebration weekend.
Molsom & Associates have this awareness day to try and encourage both adults and children to not only wear their sunglasses regularly but to ensure they are of an acceptable quality to protect their eyes. As with our skin, our eyes being exposed to UV will not have any immediate effects however, you could be putting yourself at possible risk of long-term damage. The sunlight can damage your eyes and increase long term risks of developing conditions such as cataracts and possibly AMD (agerelated Macular Degeneration). Children’s eyes are more
susceptible to UV damage as they are still developing and growing, with children under the age of 12 at greater risk of the sun’s UV rays damaging their undeveloped eyes. Here are a few steps which children should follow from an early age; • Wear good quality sunglasses which offer 100% UV protection. Ensure they fit well to get maximum protection from the sun. Always remember UV reflected from water, sand, snow even concrete can increase the damage to the eye. Reflected light can also cause short term problems such as squinting and eye strain, wearing polarised sunglasses protects against glare. • Always remember to wear your hat on a sunny day, ensure it is peaked or wide brimmed for maximum protection. • Have regular eye examinations to identify any problems early. So save the date and go visit the
practice over the two days. Free UV checking for any sunglasses and Molsom Mole will be there both days! The team cannot wait to see you all……..
The view’s better from here.

Home & Property
Getting the Garden Ready
According to the Met Office, spring officially starts on the 1st March. Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not totally convinced that spring is actually here yet, although it does feel as though winter is at last loosening its tight grip on the garden. Already the snowdrops are starting to come through - life is finally returning! In anticipation of the good weather to come, we’ve put together some ideas to help you get the garden ready for spring. Tidying up After a wild, snowy winter, it’s time to give the garden a thorough clean up from one end to the other. High winds and frosts may have caused damage to plants, shrubs and even trees, so remove any broken branches, snapped stalks and dead plants – as well as any stray debris that’s found its way into your garden. You can pile all the organic matter into your compost bin if you have one – you’ll have some great fertile soil to add to your flower beds later in the year, and nothing will go to waste! If you don’t have a compost bin, think about getting one. They range from inexpensive plastic bins to more fancy wooden styles. There are even wormeries for those that want to get really close to nature! After months of freezing temperatures, the flower beds and vegetable plots will need an overhaul. Take a fork to the soil and gently turn the earth over - but be careful not to pull up bulbs or damage roots to existing plants. By turning over the soil, you’ll be getting air to the roots and helping with the general breakdown of matter. You may like to start adding a good fertiliser to the soil too.
Take a look at any shrubs, trees, climbers or established roses that you have - if they need pruning, now is the time to get shaping. Unfortunately, you also need to start that never ending task that keeps you fit - weeding! If you break the garden down into sections, you can make a start at beating back those unwelcome intruders. Do a quick check of your fences and gates – have they survived the winter? Do they need a repair? If you’re feeling full of energy, scrub down the glasshouse and get it in order ready for your seed sowing. Check your gardening tools and take the lawn mower for a service. Birds In readiness for new birds into your garden, clean out and repair the nesting boxes in your garden. Fix new nesting boxes in suitable places. Lawncare March is classed as the start of a new year for lawns, and as such your lawn will be starting to demand some of your attention. Firstly, clear the lawn of any rubbish and then rake away the moss and dead grass (you can put the dead grass
and leaves on your compost heap, but a word of warning with moss though. There appears to be two schools of thought on this; some say it’s okay to add, and others advise against it. Check with your local garden centre specialists for professional advice.) You will also need to dig out any weeds. Once the weather gets dry enough you will be able to edge the lawn and mow it although the first ‘cut’ of the year should only take the top of the grass off, otherwise you can cause damage. You can also begin a regular process of adding lawn feed to ensure your lawn gets all the nutrients it needs to keep it looking healthy through the warm summer. Bulbs Look at the flowering bulbs in the garden. Do any need moving or grouping together for next year’s showcase? Do you have any gaps? Make a note of where there are gaps and move bulbs when the foliage has died back (in the case of snowdrops through, you’ll need to move when they’re still in the ‘green’ – just as they finish flowering.). The same rule applies to your herbaceous plants - plants that need dividing in established borders can be lifted and replanted in a new location. Houseplants If you don’t have a garden, there is still work to do inside the house. Now that temperatures are increasing, your plants will start to grow more and will need more water. You’ll also need to check on the quality of the compost and whether your plants need re-potting. Come one, what are you waiting for? If that sounds like a lot to do, remember that the really keen gardeners will also be sowing seeds and planting - March is the start of a busy time for gardening. It doesn’t matter how much you do, as long as you enjoy yourself. With the sun shining (fingers crossed) and the fresh air around you, there is no better way to keep you fit. Happy gardening!

SEAT Tarraco You’re right: this is yet another SUV. O.M.G! How many SUVs can automakers produce? And are we all really demanding them? I just can’t see the appeal. Give me a hatch or an estate – or even a saloon over one of these high-riders any day.
But that’s just me. Clearly, most other motorists prefer these “sport utility vehicles”. That’s what ‘S’, ’U’ and ‘V’ stand for by the way. You should know that, though, right? Anyway, SEAT has become a bit of a “yoof” oriented brand; therefore, you won’t be perceived as “old” if you drive the family focused Tarraco, under scrutiny here. It’s a good-looking angular affair, with room for up to seven, if you so choose. The third row of seats is great for cramming in a couple of small passengers – but they won’t thank you if you go
on a long run. There’s not a lot of legroom – and these extra chairs gobble up much of the 700-litre boot. Still, they’re a handy option to have if you occasionally need to turn the SUV into an out and out “people carrier”. Fully laden, the SEAT lurches a little if you tackle bends too enthusiastically, but when driving solo, you can be a little bit more rebellious and pretend the Tarraco corners like it’s on rails. The steering weights up well, and there’s enough grunt from the 2.0 TDI Xcellence 4 Drive 190 DSG grade, as tested here. Zero to
62mph takes only eight seconds, and the top speed is 130mph. Of course, if you drive it like you stole it, efficiency plunges like a stone. But take it easy, and you can expect mid-30s mpg. CO2 emissions are 147g/km. Fold the pop-up spare row of seats back into the boot floor, and the Tarraco is a spacious enough car with a pleasant interior. Alcantara and cloth fabrics give the five-door SUV a premium edge – as does the onboard tech. Gadgetry includes an infotainment screen, navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, as well as DAB radio. The only fly in the Tarraco’s ointment is the stiffness of its ride. It’s not a deal-breaker, but I’ve driven more comfortable motors. Oh, and, at £37,120, the 2.0 TDI Xcellence 4 Drive 190 variant isn’t the cheapest set of wheels. Still, it’s a safe car, especially as it has 4x4 technology. To prove it, the SEAT holds the full five-star safety badge, as awarded by independent crash-test body, Euro NCAP.
