to the April issue! I cannot believe I am already writing the welcome letter for the April issue, 2013 is flying by at a scary rate. Did you give something up for lent? Have you managed to keep it up? I find it’s a bit like New Year resolutions, I always manage to find an excuse why not to do this or that. Maybe one day I will have the conviction to stick to something but Easter is here and so there’s my downfall…CHOCOLATE! I have already dusted down the garden furniture and BBQ in anticipation for the better weather, I have often said I am sure I should have been born in a warmer country, I feel a different person once the warm sun hits my face.

National Pet Month

You may remember last month I talked about where I hoped to visit this year? Last month we visited Reykjavík in Iceland and I can highly recommend it for pure unspoilt, natural beauty. We crammed a lot into our 5 days there – spa treatments, off roading on glaciers, a snowmobile tour, city walks as well as enjoying plenty of gorgeous food. I always try to sample the local cuisine and so this time it was puffin and minke whale. I have to admit the puffin was nice, similar to duck but the minke whale wasn’t for me. Then I’m not a huge red meat fan anyway. In this issue we are introducing a new feature for the spring/summer – Get Outdoors, we will look at how you and all the family can make the most of the longer days, hopefully better weather and have some fun without costing the earth. This month we have worked with The Caravan and Camping Club to look at how to get at one with nature and sleep under the stars, so to speak! As it’s now spring this issue would not be complete without an article on Spring cleaning, so grab your rubber gloves and read our guide to getting your house sparkling from top to bottom on page 40. Charity portrait for Father’s Day! Local photographer Catherine Carter is to once again hosting the popular charity portrait day in aid of Holbeach Hospital. This portrait day is far from traditional portaiture, the scene will be set with fun and relaxed in mind, with Vintage apple boxes,apples, hay bales, vintage dolls pram, bunting, vintage type writer, etc The portrait will take place in the grounds of Holbeach Hospital on Sunday June 2. SHDC makes savings of £1.6m A total of £1.6m has been saved by South Holland District Council thanks to Compass Point, the shared services company the Council set up with East Lindsey District Council. The company has netted the savings over two years since 2010-11 – when compared with the costs previously incurred. The joint saving for the two Councils is £4.3m which is shared in proportion to the relative sizes of the two authorities. These savings have contributed to South Holland’s ability to reduce the cost of Council Tax to residents without reducing service levels over three years. Compass Point Business Services (East Coast) Ltd, which operates out of Priory Road, Spalding, and Manby Park near Louth, runs the council’s IT, HR, Finance, Revenues, Benefits and Customer Services.

Economies of scale and a fundamental review of processes have enabled these savings by introducing more efficient ways of operating by sharing staff and systems. In August 2010, 298 people transferred into the company from both councils – the company now employs 223 people and has created 11 apprenticeship positions. Councillor Paul Przyszlak, Deputy Leader of South Holland and Chairman of the Company Board said: “Compass Point Business Services continues to provide the Council with important savings at a time when we are dealing with year-on-year reductions in our funding. It is providing value for money at a time when there are great pressures on the public purse.”

Spalding High School raise funds for local residential Home A group of sixth form students from Spalding High School have been volunteering at local residential care home Southernwood House. Alex Lott and Felicity Monger, who are joint chair of the Charity Committee for School said, ‘We were inspired to do some fund-raising for Southernwood House, as we wanted enhance the daily life of the residents’. The students have organised a number of cake stalls, a non-uniform day and also sold sweets to children from a local primary school who came to watch the School pantomime ‘Peter Panto’. In total they have raised a staggering £1,124.69. Alex and Felicity would like to thank their committee, staff

and students who have supported and donated to this worthy cause. The money raised will help towards development of the sensory garden at Southernwood House. The students hope that Southernwood House continue to get support from the local community.

Stock appeal for British Heart Foundation in Spalding The British heart Foundation shop has one simple aim – to raise money to save lives. This includes funding for heart equipment for local hospitals, public places, heart nurses, preventative work and awareness of heart disease. Unfortunately, at some point most of us will have family, friends or colleagues who will be touched by heart disease and 100% of the profits raised go towards helping those who suffer. Getting the stock to sell in their shop is becoming increasingly difficult. They have to pay costs for the van, which collects bags from your doorstep, and sometimes these are stolen by persons using them to make a profit for themselves, even though they have been specifically left for our charity. The shop is urging the people of Spalding, Holbeach and the surrounding area to call 01775 713566 for a free collection if they want to donate. The friendly drivers would love to come and pick up your donations. They’ll do it when it’s most convenient to you and free of charge. school news Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils... Do you have exciting news at your school? Sir John Gleed School For students and staff at the Sir John Gleed School term 4 is a short but busy term. Exams are taking place throughout March for GCSE students. On Friday 15th February the last day before February Half Term students took part in the Swimming Gala for local secondary schools in the area. Sir John Gleed School Year 8 & 9 boys came second in their race, with Year 10 & 11 girls coming third in their race. Year 9 students have taken part in the Dodgeball tournament and congratulations go to the Boys’ Team who came first and the Girls’ Team who came second and to the Yr11 sports leaders who officiated the games. On Tuesday 26th February the Sir John Gleed School held a memorial service at the St Mary and St Nicholas for Callum Pite, who sadly lost his fight to cancer on New Year’s Day. It was a fitting mark of respect and appreciated by all. We look forward to the fund raising day that is taking place on Friday 22nd March from 12 noon at the school to raise money for Cullum’s charity. The school is raising money for Callum Pite’s Smile Charity to support young people with cancer, on a special non-uniform and activities day on Friday 22nd March.

Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a busy time for the children at Ayscoughfee Hall School particularly with lots of visits and visitors within the local community helping to enrich the childrens’ learning. The School celebrated World Book Day with the children and teachers dressing up as their favourite book character. There were some fantastic characters represented on the day – everything from Gangster Granny to Little Red Riding Hood. In the week leading up to World Book Day, the Year 3 class visited Spalding Library to see how a library works and took part in a fun book quiz. Years 4 and 5 visited Bookmark and enjoyed looking at the books and seeing how a bookshop is run as well as spending their book day vouchers. Year 6 visited

the newspaper offices to see how the local papers are put together and particularly enjoyed writing their own article whilst on the visit. Reception class had a visit from a local vetinary nurse and were fascinated to learn about her work. The children had great fun bandaging their own toy animal and the visit has added a whole new dimension to their role play in their own vets surgery in the classroom. They also had a visit from Molsons opticians and were intrigued to learn about the different glasses and instruments the optician uses when having an eye test.

Little Treasures Nurseries March was a fun packed month at Little Treasures Nurseries, the staff and children celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite characters and sharing their favourite books and on Red Nose Day everyone took part in fun activities to help raise money. The fun continues into April, the children will be making links to their own community by learning about the upcoming Spalding Flower Parade and the changing season.

Weston St Mary CE Primary School Holbeach Bank Primary School Holbeach Bank Primary School entered 2013 with a new Head Teacher. Mrs Christine Wright is new to Holbeach Bank, but is no stranger to leadership. She has been Head Teacher at Fleet Wood Lane School for thirteen years and is currently providing Leadership Support to Holbeach Bank School as Executive Headteacher. We have reintroduced Breakfast Club from 8.00 am each morning and all year groups within the school have been to activity events at other schools including a theatre workshop, puzzle and lego days. 10 www.simplyspalding.co.uk SIMPLYSPALDING

Chinese New Year Day was held in school on 8th February and the children enjoyed a taster session buffet which was thoroughly enjoyed. The food was very good and was supplied by the Cyrstal Inn in Spalding. We would like to thank them again for their support. The inter-school Netball tournament on 12th February went very well with the school finishing in second place. Well done to all our players. To celebrate Shrove Tuesday, our breakfast club children enjoyed some home-made pancakes alongside their other healthy breakfast choices.

The children and teachers enjoyed a day out at Cadbury World on 27th February, and a very enjoyable ‘Come Celebrate Lent’ service was held in school on 28th February. Pupils March activities include: “Dress Up for World Book Day” on 7th, Red Nose Day fundraising activites on the 15th, a Holy Week Federated School s Service on 21st, and a Wildlife Show on 22nd.

mislabeled meat products

Undeclared horse meat, as well as traces of horse and pork DNA, has been found in meat products. These include beef burgers, lasagne and bolognese ready meal products contaminated by horse meat, and pork DNA found in a selection of meat pies labelled as Halal. by John Willoughby

roducts affected with horse meat include Aldi beef lasagne and spaghetti bolognese, Tesco Everyday Value spaghetti bolognese and Findus beef lasagne sold in Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. Some essential Waitrose frozen British beef meatballs may also contain pork. Government departments and the food industry are working to find out which food products are affected and to take action against those responsible. Products are also being tested to check if horse meat found in ready meals contains the vets drug phenylbutazone, known as ‘bute’. Animals treated with bute should not be in the food chain, in case they pose a risk to health. The government departments responsible for food issues are the Food Standards Agency (FSA) who deal with food safety and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) who deal with whether food has been mislabeled or contaminated. Environmental Health and Trading Standards departments within local authorities are also working together with government departments to identify and inspect all food premises that process or repack beef products.

Your rights You have a right to expect food to be as it is described on the label, under the Sale of Goods Act. Food retailers, manufacturers and suppliers are all responsible to make sure food is labelled correctly. Incorrectly labelled ready meals have been withdrawn from sale. If you have ready meals in your freezer that you are concerned about, take them back to the shop you bought them from. You should be offered a full refund for products that have been tested and found to contain something that isn’t on the label. Complaints about food labeling and advertising Food manufacturers have to follow certain rules when labeling and advertising products. The law says

food and drink must match its description. So a pie advertised as home-made must be home-made. There are also laws which stop traders from persuading you to buy things through advertising that is misleading. This page tells you what you can do if you have a complaint about the labeling or advertising of food or drink.

Food is not as described The law says food must match its description. If it doesn’t, you can complain. For example, if you buy salt and vinegar crisps and they turn out to be cheese and onion. Or a dish on a menu is described as ‘fish pie with garlic bread’ but you are surprised to get salad instead of garlic bread. If this happens and you are not happy, you can complain. If the food is from a shop, you can take it back with your receipt and ask for a refund or replacement. Or you could send it to the manufacturer with a letter of complaint and ask them for the refund or replacement.

Complaints about labeling or misleading descriptions If you have a complaint about food or drink labeling or a misleading description you could write a letter of complaint to the manufacturer. Include a copy of the offending label with your letter. You should also report it to trading standards.

What’s on the label A food label must: • not be misleading, false or exaggerated • contain the name of the food • list the ingredients, in descending order of weight. Additives and flavourings have to be included in the list of ingredients. Some foods do not need to have their ingredients listed, for example, alcoholic drinks with more than 1.2% alcoholic strength • indicate whether the food contains genetically modified soya beans or genetically modified maize • include the appropriate date mark • give any special storage conditions or conditions of use • include the name and address of the manufacturer or packer • give details of the place of origin, if failure to do so would be misleading • give instructions for use, if appropriate • indicate the weight or quantity. Normally, this must be given in metric measurement although supplementary detail can be given in imperial measurement and some foods are exempt from the requirement to label their weight in metric measurement • if a nutrition claim is made, give nutritional details in a specified form, for example, the amount of energy provided by 100g or 100ml of the food • show alcoholic strength by volume. There are additional labeling requirements for certain categories of food, for example: • food sold from vending machines • raw milk • pre-packed alcoholic drinks.

Food advertising To complain about a food advertisement, contact the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA): www.asa.org.uk. For example, you might want to complain about an advert which you think encourages unhealthy eating, or which is misleading or makes false statements. There are special rules about children and TV advertisements for foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. The rules are set out in the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) TV Advertising Standards Code. Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) website at: www.cap.org.uk.

Firstly, remember your tent! It may seem obvious but you’d be surprised how many people turn up to their site without one. Also remember your tent pegs- you wouldn’t want to get blown away in the middle of the night! Invest in a mallet and peg puller- many tents don’t come with them. Forward plan and check the weather forecast to pack the correct clothing and equipment. Ensure you have a site phone number to hand. All of The Club’s Holiday Site Managers are more than happy to help with directions. Bring your board games, they’re fantastic for a rainy day. Take a head torch, they’re great fun for kids- it means they will actually enjoy going to bed! seasonal herbs, fruit & vegetables in APRIL Makes 4-6 Burgers 500g lean minced beef 1 onion finely chopped 1 egg 3 slices of bread 3 tbsp milk 2tsp mixed herbs 1tsp garlic or 2 cloves finely chopped ½ - 1 tsp chilli flakes or 1 dessed chilli finely chopped (add more or less depending on how spicy you like your food)

Method Leave the bread out for about 30minutes in a tower formation to allow to dry. Then with cold hands tear or rub into bread crumbs. In a mixing bowl mix together all the ingredients. It should create a firm mixture that doesn’t fall apart. Divide the mixture into 4 or 6 and then take each one roll into a ball with firm hands and then flatten to make patties. Place on a grill rack and cook in the oven at 200c/390F/Gas Mark 6 for 30 minutes. Serve in ciabatta or floured rolls with lettuce, a slice of tomato, a slice of cheese and your favourite sauce.

Reflective of unique Gurkha Nepalese and Indian cuisine, its style was born in the mountains of the Himalayas and has gone on to become a favourite fare throughout the world. And Ram Bashyal, who owns the restaurant with business partner Depak Chatri, is keen to spread the word even further. “We’re offering classic Indian dishes alongside some traditional Nepalese ones, and so far it’s going very well, we’ve had some very positive response,” he said. “Lots of people have returned many times and say they love the food. Nepalese cuisine isn’t as oily as Indian, and the spice is light as well, although that doesn’t mean it’s mild! “Everything here is fresh cooked, which can mean it sometimes takes ten to fifteen minutes before the starters are served, but we guarantee it’ll definitely be worth the wait.” At lunch time customers can choose a starter, main course and side order all for £6.95, with the menu

ou can’t put a price on their excellent care, friendly staff and top notch customer service - and Spalding’s Red Lion Street and New Road areas are lucky to have more than their fair share of these quality firms. Like humans, the more different types of activity we do, the more muscle tone we build and the fitter we get. However, as dogs are most often walked on a lead, it takes them longer to build up their fitness. That’s why breaking up your walking routine with the odd game of fetch or Frisbee improves their fitness quicker, whilst making it all seem a little more exciting. keep it inteReSting Dogs don’t read the paper and watch the news like we do, they pick up all of their gossip from what they see and smell on their walks. Each lamppost tells a different story, so the more you break up the experience, the more exciting and satisfying it will be for him; after all, we don’t like watching the same program over and over again! While some dogs need more exercise than others, all dogs need to get out every day. The size, breed and age of your dog will all have an effect on exactly how much he needs. Some may need 15 minutes twice a day, others may need up to 30 minutes twice a day. Generally speaking, age is key with adolescent dogs needing a lot more exercise and tiring out than an older dog. When looking at the breed of your dog, consider how the exercise will affect him. Dogs with shorter legs may tire out quicker with the more running they do and dogs with short snouts, such as pugs and bulldogs, may find it hard to breathe if they get too out of breath. Puppies and larger dogs may not be suited to long bouts of running as it puts too much pressure on their joints, but a quick game of Frisbee or catch is ideal. It is also worth remembering that, just like you, your dog needs to be broken in gently. After a winter of fewer /shorter walks, don’t be tempted to head straight out for a marathon just because the sun is shining. Build up gradually and give him time to regain his fitness. A bit of thought and common sense here can help you to find the best outdoor exercise regime for you and your pooch. FooD & WateR It goes without saying that the more active your dog is outdoors, the more water he will need. We would recommend taking some water out with you; particularly when doing more strenuous exercise or when the hot weather arrives. Bear in mind that as your dogs exercise more, their nutritional requirements will probably increase as well. Pop in store and speak to one of our members of staff; they’ll be able to tell you exactly what you need to do to make sure he’s still getting all the nutrients he needs.

Making a Will

I hate to use a cliché, but doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun? by Kate Chapman

can’t believe that I’m sitting here writing this on the eve of my little man’s first birthday. This time last year, I was waddling round the size of a house, convinced that I still had at least another two - if not four - weeks to go before his arrival. Of course, like all best laid plans, that was not to be the case, as our little Peter had other ideas. But what a year it’s been, although thankfully adjusting to life as a family four has come more easily than I expected. Nancy has really come into her own too, relishing her role of big sister, while Peter clearly adores her, crawling round after her, always eager to interfere in whatever it is she’s doing. And when he’s upset she’s always the first to come running with his favourite toy tractor to cheer him up. Now that he’s a little bit bigger, they’ve started playing together more too; if they’re not wrestling one another on the floor, then it’s tickling fights, of which, up until yet, Nancy is usually the victor, reducing her little bro to uncontrollable fits of giggles. She’s found an eager audience in her sibling too, taking every opportunity to recite her favourite books to him - having memorised them off by heart, or alternatively she just makes the story up by looking at the pictures - which is nothing short of hilarious to listen to. I love taking them out in the car together too; Nancy points out all the local landmarks to her devoted audience as we drive along. “Look Peter, mindwills!” she shouts as we pass a cluster of turbines, or “Peter, there’s some Ba Bas here, yes there is,” whenever a flock sheep comes into view. Although he can’t answer back yet, he sits there nodding away, taking in her every word. They’re like a little old couple with their funny mannerisms! As we prepare to say ‘Happy First Birthday Peter!’, I for one can’t wait to see what the next 12 months has in store for us.

Maintaining law and order The most recognisable building overlooking Spalding’s Sheep Market is unquestionably the town’s court house, which has taken prominence since 1843. by Kate Chapman

he area has an association with law and order dating back much further than this. As recalled by Michael Elsden in his Aspects of Spalding book series, county magistrates had obtained a building in Broad Street to use as a prison as far back as 1619. This House of Correction was rebuilt in 1765 and then a new one was built in the Sheep Market in 1824-5. Finished the following year, it cost around £15,000, and included a chapel, a treadmill, seven airing courts divided into classes plus sixteen day rooms and 48 cells. The jail was used for detaining prisoners of all offences except capital ones, while the average number of prisoners for 1835 is said to have been 39. Several years later in 1851-2 the building was enlarged. A report for 1879 claims the daily average of prisoners was 59 men and 13 women. Punishments consisted of flogging, being put in handcuffs and hard labour enforced by the treadmill - which could accommodate 34 inmates and was used to grind flour and cereals. Other forms of labour included wood chopping and pea-picking. Spalding’s prison closed on March 31, 1884, when the building was bought by John Longstaff for around £1,800. He sold part of the site for a Drill Hall (which was later replaced by the Regent Cinema, then the Trustees Savings Bank and library. Part of the site today is now occupied by a restaurant). Another part of it was used to widen the very narrow Station Street, while the remainder had shops and houses built on it. In fact some the buildings in Station Street and Victoria Street were constructed using leftover materials from the prison. As mentioned earlier, prior to the prison’s closure, another building involved in upholding the law was constructed. The architect who designed the magnificent Sessions House was Charles Kirk, of Sleaford, while the contractors were Booth and Walker, of Bramley, near Leeds.

Described as ‘a large and handsome building’ by White’s Directory, the court was built in the Tudor style, at a cost of more than £6,000. An inventory lists the materials used as 800,000 bricks, 12,000 cubic feet of stone, 350 chaldrons of lime, 8,000 tons of sand and 4,500 cubic feet of timber. Other items used in the construction were 5,000 tons of shingle, 500 bundles of lath, 12 tons of slate, three tons of iron hooping, 10 tons of sheet lead, 100 barrels of cement and 1,000 feet of superior glass. It was officially opened at the midsummer quarter sessions on June 30, 1843, at the conclusion of which, the grand jury was invited to inspect the new building.

In August 1919 a rather unusual artefact was unveiled outside the court house – a 34 ton tank. The vehicle was presented to the town by the National War Savings Committee, as an acknowledgement of the efforts made during the First World War (1914-18). The wall surrounding the building had to be taken down to get it the machine in place as the gates were too small for it to pass through. And there it remained until May 1937, when a sub-committee of councillors agreed to its removal. It was disposed of for scrap metal. More than 150 years later the magnificent building it is still home to the Spalding’s Magistrates’ Court, which deals with a range of criminal, family and youth court issues for cases from across south Lincolnshire.

Spring into action with some serious cleaning

Spring is just around the corner - and that means it’s time to get ready for the new season by giving your house a good once over. Sounds like an unenviable task doesn’t it, but we guarantee you’ll feel much better once you’ve got stuck in. by Kate Chapman

o, where to start? Well, why not bite the bullet and tackle those areas which have been neglected all winter long? But before you do, it may be a good idea to clear the clutter first, as this will make the big clean a lot easier, especially if you haven’t got all sorts of junk and other items you don’t want anymore lying about. Box up the things to keep, ready for storage, and either donate the stuff you don’t want to a charity shop or hold a garage sale and earn a few quid for yourself in the process. Now there really is no putting off the cleaning any longer; get yourself armed with a few dust-busting essentials like dusters, a feather duster and furniture polish. You’ll also need a wash leather, cleaning cloth, window cleaner, rubber gloves, a bucket, mop, vacuum cleaner, carpet shampoo and a step ladder too. And let’s take it room by room - tackling the kitchen first. Empty the sink of dirty pots, and begin by wiping down all the window and window sills, surfaces, small appliances and blinds, before moving onto your oven and refrigerator. Take the opportunity to sort through your fridge, freezer and cupboards and throw out all the expired food. Wipe down your cupboards and clean out your draws, before finishing off by washing the sink and sweeping and mopping the floors.

Next it’s time to take on your bathrooms - start by dusting fans and vents, before taking down any blinds or curtains to clean them according to their instructions. And finish off by sweeping and mopping the floor. Living areas are next - start by cobwebbing and dusting - including skirting boards - picture frames, light fittings and furniture. Remove books from their shelves and all your ornaments and knick knacks too. Finish off by cleaning your windows, followed by the carpets, rugs and curtains. The same applies to the dining room. Dust, cobweb, clean your curtains, light fittings and furniture as well as the floors. Now you’re ready to tackle your bedrooms - clean your light fittings and windows as before. Go round with your feather duster and dust down any bedside tables, dressing tables and cabinets as well as lamps and mirrors. Change all your bedding, turn your mattresses and don’t forget to clean under the bed. Vacuum your floors or use a carpet cleaner for a deeper cleanse and finish off by decluttering your drawers and wardrobes. And why not enlist the rest of the family to help with the chores - this will not only lessen the load, it also means it will get done more quickly.

Looking after your lawn natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way by bringing life to your soil Generally in life, the more natural something is, the better it is. Feeding your lawn is no different. by Richard Simpson

n the last few years turf grass management techniques have been stuck in a cycle of feed fungicide - then more feed. Doing this sets up a chain of events. The grass becomes dependent on nitrogen, so more feed which then creates more disease, therefore more fungicide. The only people who gain out of this are the suppliers. These practices are not sustainable (as many very high profile golf clubs have found out to their cost) because over use of chemically produced fertiliser is contaminating the soil.

The effect. If thatch is allowed to build up (over 15mm becomes a problem) then water does not penetrate effectively and no oxygen can reach the root zone. As a result the plant becomes shallow rooted and weak and has no defence against drought. Scarifying and aeration are then a fundamental requirement to remedy the situation. In some cases where the thatch has built up to higher levels then scarifying can do more harm than good. The solution. Soil and grass is living matter and, just like with us, the quality of food and nourishment affects its health. Someone living on mainly processed food is less likely to be as healthy as one whose diet is made up of fresh and natural ingredients. 42 www.simplyspalding.co.uk SIMPLYSPALDING

Fact. In almost all cases of poor lawn health the reason lies within the soil and not the grass. Fact. The soil has its own food chain managed by millions of microbes living within it. Fact. We rely on these microbes to convert whatever we apply as a feed to usable energy that the grass plant can uptake. Fact. Most fertilisers primarily contain NPK (nitrogen, phosphates and potassium) plus sometimes trace elements such

as Iron, magnesium, calcium etc. The majority of these fertilisers available to both the DIY and professional markets are inorganic and chemically produced, and contain high levels of salt.

Fact. Salt is a major soil contaminant and kills the microbes that are needed to convert these fertilisers into usable energy. These microbes also break down thatch (dead organic matter) which produces humic acid, another natural plant food. If we destroy them this process effectively stops, and thatch builds up uncontrolled.

My fertilisers contain added live bacteria and fungi to boost the soilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to create a sustainable root zone. Think of it as giving your lawn a yoghurt every now and then. In addition they have a very low salt index which means that we are not contaminating the soil unnecessarily. The result is that we do not have excessive top growth, requirement for scarifying becomes reduced, and root mass and depth are improved, thus making the grass more resilient to drought. Other products can be applied in certain situation such as humic boosters, seaweed extract, liquid molasses and thatch eating fungi. These are all natural products with no synthetic additives.

Oh yes, and I also do all the other things you would expect such as moss and weed control, aeration, mechanical raking and over-seeding.

Laying down the lawn If, like Tom Jones, you’re longing for the green, green grass of home, then now could be the perfect time to set about achieving your dream. by Kate Chapman

long with autumn, spring is one of the best times to lay a new lawn. Follow our tips and you could soon be the owner of a pristine grassy area, that’ll leave all your neighbours green with envy. And there are two ways to go about this - seed it yourself or buy in some rolls of turf to do the job for you. Whichever you choose, prepare your site properly in order to achieve optimum results.

Seeding This is undoubtedly the cheapest option. There’s a wide range of seed mixtures available, so you will need to think about which will best suit your needs. Is your lawn going to be subjected to lots of wear and tear by children and pets? Or is it more for a showpiece area, where there will be light traffic passing over it? Is the grassed area going to be situated in the shade of a fence or under trees? There are mixes available to suit all of these options as well as quick lawns, drought tolerant and easy to lay ones. Once you have your seed, it’s time to set to work. Thoroughly weed the area to be sown (don’t use a residual weedkiller as this will stay in the soil and stop the grass from germinating), and then dig or rotivate it to a depth of around 20cm. Dig in some manure and leave it to settle. The longer the better, say experts, who recommend leaving it for between five and six weeks if possible. Hand weed the area again, before levelling the surface, treading the area several times in different directions, and raking, again in different directions. Next apply and rake in some general purpose fertiliser, before calculating the seed quantity you will require. Sow half the seed over the whole area, working in parallel rows and lengthways and repeat the process, this time going width ways. Lightly rake over the area to cover the majority of the seeds with soil. If the weather stays dry, gently water with a sprinkler. If dry weather continues, repeat the watering as necessary while the seeds germinate. The Royal Horticultural Society advises that when the seedlings reach 2-3 inches tall, you should lightly re-firm the soil with a garden roller or rear roller of a cylinder mower, and then a couple of days later cut the grass by about one-third of its length. Then cut every three to seven days as required. Use your new lawn as little as possible during the first season.

Turf Turf establishes a lawn quickly, rolls can be delivered to your door, and like seed, come in a range of grades depending on how they will be used. Once your turf has arrived, stack it in the shade, sprinkle with water if it’s dry and aim to lay it within 24 hours. Prepare the area by skimming off any old grass and removing large stones and weeds. Then level the land by filling in any hollows and evening out any lumps. Fork over and rake the soil to leave a fine finish, before treading over it to flatten it and raking again. 44 www.simplyspalding.co.uk SIMPLYSPALDING

As in the seeding process you should also rake in some granular fertiliser, and water. Lay the first row of turf along a straight edge, and slowly unroll it. Butt the next roll up to the first, making good contact with the soil, tapping it down firmly with the back of a rake. Stagger your subsequent rolls into a brickwork pattern, until the whole area is covered, making sure the turf goes beyond the edges of the lawn. You can remove any remnants with a board and half moon cutting tool. Water the turf with either a watering can or sprinkler and try not to walk on it until it is rooted - this could take several weeks. If the weather remains mild, the grass will grow quickly, so trim it lightly, keeping your mower blades set high.

Kia Sportage KX-4 2.0 CRDi AWD

Kia’s top-of-the-range ‘KX-4’ version of the Sportage features a higher output oil-burner alongside the most well-appointed level of specification yet seen in the Korean company’s popular crossover model. by Tim Barnes-Clay

he ‘KX-4’ uses an 181bhp version of Kia’s 2.0-litre CRDi turbodiesel engine hooked up to a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions and an All-Wheel Drive system. The Sportage ‘KX-4’ builds on the specification of the ‘KX-3 Sat Nav’ by adding a Parallel Parking Assist System – complete with all-round parking sensors – a keyless smart entry system and engine stop/start button as well as stainless steel door scuff plates. Standard equipment also includes full leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, seveninch touchscreen satellite navigation system and Xenon lights. Oh yes, and if you have a passion for cranking up the volume, it has a seven-speaker stereo with external amplifier and subwoofer. The ‘KX-4’ does the 0-60mph sprint in 9.4 seconds and, when fitted with the six-speed manual transmission as my test car was, top speed is 120mph. Not blindingly quick – but not bad for a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). Unlike the other Sportage trim versions – ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘3 Sat Nav’ – which are also on offer with two wheel drive, the ‘KX-4’ is only available in All-Wheel Drive (AWD). The clever Kia monitors driving conditions and anticipates when AWD will be needed, ensuring you are always in the right drive mode for the right circumstances. The AWD system normally delivers 100 per cent of engine torque to the front wheels. But this can be redistributed up to a maximum of 60:40 front-to-rear to enhance cornering stability or if road conditions deteriorate. For off-road driving, you can manually select lock mode, which gives a 50:50 torque split at speeds of up to 25mph.

The ‘KX-4’ always feels secure on the black stuff and just as competent in the rough or in icy conditions. If you use the Sportage for commuting, you’ll also be pleased – motorway miles are hoovered up with ease. Some of the cabin plastics are a bit tacky, but all instruments are visible and the switchgear is rationally placed – unlike some far more costly SUVs. The tailgate is also nice and wide for easy loading and the Sportage will seat five adults in the cabin. Additionally, the maximum towing weight (braked) is 2000 kg, so if you’re into caravanning or you move in equine circles and need to haul a horsebox, it’ll serve as a decent enough load-lugger.
