Welcome to the August issue
A
ll I have heard for the last few weeks is ‘rain, rain, go away’. Whilst we’ve had some warm days it still doesn’t feel like summer has truly arrived….it better hurry up! I cannot believe we have just celebrated my daughter’s second birthday. Time flies past so quickly when there are little ones whizzing around your feet. We visited and stayed over at CBeebies Land which was brilliant, we all had a great couple of days, even dodging the showers. Back to this months magazine – we offer advice on getting holiday ready, we look at tasty treats for the BBQ as what treats to pop into your picnics. We also talk about fencing options for your garden and we talk about taking time out as parents. Annette from The Village Midwives discusses the seasons of motherhood and how to weather them. Otis takes a trip to Long Sutton and finally we explore the excitement around Deeping Raft race for 2019. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the summer holidays and catch up next month!

Fowler Welch facilitates Quorn’s move into ambient market Healthy meat-free protein specialist brand Quorn has expanded its range into the ambient market and chosen long-time trusted partner Fowler Welch to provide an end-to-end supply chain solution. Quorn’s new range rolls out in Tesco and Asda this month and will be managed through the Fowler Welch facility in Heywood, Greater Manchester. The development marks Quorn’s first step away from chilled and frozen offerings to introduce an innovative meat-free option into consumers’ cupboards.
Christophe Evo, head of logistics at Quorn, said: “The relationship between Quorn and Fowler Welch has developed from being a simple transactional-based collaboration into a close working business relationship over the last 12 years. Multi award-winning logistics specialist Fowler Welch started working with Quorn Foods in 2007, when the company began to explore options for storage and distribution and saw the potential of joining the Fowler Welch warehouse portfolio. Nick Hay, CEO Fowler Welch, said: “We have
enjoyed a long and successful partnership with Quorn since it joined our operation, initially at the flagship site in Spalding and more recently from the state-of-the-art distribution centre in Nuneaton.” Quorn’s new range comprises Wonder Grains snack pots and bowl meals, each in three flavour variants, plus meat alternative strips in Spicy Tikka and Smoky Fajita.
Teenagers Use Army Cadet First Aid Skills To Help Man Found Collapsed In The Street Three teenagers from Long Sutton in Lincolnshire raced to help a man who had collapsed on the pavement and been found semi-conscious. Rachel Stevens, 15, Michael Ireland, 16, and Samuel Collett, 16, were walking home from training night at Long Sutton Army Cadet Force Detachment on Thursday 12th June when the drama unfolded on Bull Lane, Nottingham. Using the first aid skills they had learnt in the Army Cadets, the trio were able to assess the man’s injuries, kept him warm and dry with their combat jackets and relayed vital information to the 999 operator. They quickly discovered that the man had epilepsy and could see he had suffered head injuries from his fall. Samuel Collett, who called for the
ambulance, said: “When I saw the man my first aid instincts and training kicked in. You can do lots of theory in a classroom but until you are placed in that situation you don’t know how you will react. At first I was nervous but adrenaline soon got rid of this.” Michael Ireland, who assessed the man’s injuries and performed the initial checks, added: “I just feel happy that there is someone somewhere who needed help and I was able to give it. I also feel proud of not only myself but all of us in how we were all able to help in our own ways. “The skills we learned in Cadets were invaluable to the situation and was the only reason we knew how to respond and assist in a
difficult situation.” The paramedics who arrived on the scene praised the Cadets for their efforts and commented on how impressed they were with the Cadet’s first aid skills. Mick Flindall, Detachment Commander for Long Sutton Army Cadet Force, said: “I am extremely proud that three of my Cadets were able to help a member of the public in a potentially life threatening situation. They remembered their training and implemented it correctly whilst under pressure. “The way they worked as a team is an example to all young people not just to Cadets. They are a credit to themselves, Long Sutton Detachment and the whole Army Cadet Force.” For more information on your local Army Cadet Force visit www.armycadets.com

Sir John Hayes MP says, “No one should be turned away because of their assistance dog” Speaking in the House of Commons, Sir John Hayes MP highlighted discrimination against guide dog owners, saying: ‘A civilised society is defined by the way that it copes with and counters disadvantage. I was therefore alarmed to discover yesterday that 79% of assistance dog owners had been made to feel unwelcome or had received second-class service because they had their assistance dog with them, and in particular that 73% of those with guide dogs or assistance dogs had been turned away by a minicab or taxi driver. The Government commissioned a report on taxi licensing, and one of its recommendations was that we deal with this prejudice against people with guide dogs and other assistance dogs. It is time that the Government acted and joined you, Mr Speaker, and I, whose mission has always been to redistribute advantage’. On Wednesday, 19 June, more than a hundred guide dog owners from across the country converged on Westminster Hall in Parliament to share their experiences of being turned away by businesses because of their dog. At the event, the MP for South Holland and The Deepings spoke to guide dog owners about the lasting impact of these refusals. It is against the law to refuse access
to a disabled person accompanied by an assistance dog except in the most exceptional circumstances. Despite this, a new Guide Dogs survey found that three out of four (76%) assistance dog owners had been turned away because of their dog. Taxis and minicabs were the worst offenders – experienced by 73% of those reporting refusals in the last twelve months. Refusals at restaurants (54%), newsagents (42%) and high street shops (36%) were also common. Guide Dogs are calling for all taxi and minicab drivers to be required to take disability equality training, so they are aware of the rights of disabled passengers. Guide Dogs also supports changes to equality legislation to make action against businesses who refuse access easier.
Maxey Classic Car & Bike Show One of the most popular regional shows, the long established Maxey Classic Car & Bike Show is being held on Saturday, August 10th at the picturesque lakeside venue in the village. Now in it’s 18th year, the Maxey event promises to attract a large entry of two and four-wheel vehicles. A great day out for all the family, with live music from Paul Lake and the jazz band Herbie Lamb Quartet, real ale bar, BBQ and children’s amusements. Admission is just £5 with free entry for exhibitors and under 14’s. The show opens to the public at 11am with judging taking place between 1pm and 3.30pm. Once again, the difficult job of judging the winners is being handled by national motoring journalists. Organised by the Maxey Charity Club, all the show’s profits
which last year was £3,000 is donated to local good causes. Started in 2001 the event has become increasingly well-known over the years and continues to attract over 350 vehicles which include a wide range of classics, exotics like modern Ferraris, kit cars and 4x4’s and the classic motorcycle class which gets more popular each year. Our motto is “If you drive it or ride it and you love it, come along and show it”. There is no need to book your vehicle in, just turn up on the day. We’d love to see you there! For more information contact Gilly Chown on 01778 344476 or see our website: maxeyclassiccarandbikeshow. com
John Hayes MP said: “It was disturbing to hear how common these incidents of discrimination are for assistance dog owners. No one should be turned away on their local high street because of their assistance dog. “During my time as transport Minister, I commissioned a working group to consider how best to ensure taxis and private license hire vehicles were always compelled to pick up passengers with assistance dogs’.
Fantastic turnout to ‘Give it a Go’ with local societies and sports clubs in Spalding There was a huge turnout of families looking to Give it a Go in Spalding this weekend, as over 900 people visited Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field to try a wide range of free activities and sports. Give it a Go, ran by South Holland District Council’s community development team, gave residents of all ages the opportunity to try new sports, dance, exercises and activities for free, and meet clubs and societies from across the district on the lookout for new members. The event has grown incredibly, with almost twice as many people attending as in 2018, and 22 local clubs and groups offering tasters of their activities and stalls with more information. Highlights included Four Winds Equestrian Centre who brought along two ponies, Spalding United and Pinchbeck United Ladies and Girls’
skills drills, Karate Spalding and ABC Boxing’s training sessions, ARC aerial fitness, Long Sutton Target Shooting Club and slime making with Red Granny’s Recreation Station. Councillor Gary Taylor, South Holland Council portfolio holder for communities and facilities, said: “Give it a Go felt like the perfect start to what is a busy summer of community events across South Holland, and the incredible amount of people who came along to try some exciting new, fun and free activities was a great way to kick it all off. “I was really happy to attend the event and the enjoyment of everyone who came along was clear to see. We have had great feedback from residents and clubs alike and I’d like to say thank you to everyone who came and took part in the
event, our community development team for their great work in organising it, and to all of the groups, clubs and societies who put on some brilliant activities and tasters during the day.” The Communities team will have more free opportunities to try new sports and arts activities across the district this summer with their ‘Activate!’ events at the following locations: • Wednesday 31 July, Glen Park, Surfleet • Wednesday 7 August, Elizabethan Centre, Whaplode Drove • Wednesday 14 August, Donington Community Centre, Donington • Wednesday 21 August, Haywain Drive, Deeping St Nicholas • Wednesday 28 August, Cinder Ash Park, Long Sutton

Advice Pregnancy and Discrimination at Work “I’m 3 months pregnant and just beginning to show, so last week I thought I’d sit down with my manager and let them know before any speculation could take place. My manager was really happy for me, but this week I’ve been pulled aside and told they’re letting me go due to poor performance. I’ve worked here for 2 years and never had any negative feedback so I don’t understand. Could they be sacking me just for being pregnant? Is this legal?” It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been working for your employer, being fired because of pregnancy, or pregnancy-related issues, is automatically classed as unfair dismissal. Although your employer said you were being sacked for poor performance, you’re right to be suspicious as this only came to light after you told your manager about your pregnancy. If your employer says your dismissal has nothing to do with you having a baby, you will need to prove that it was. You can ask your employer to send you written reasons for your dismissal. As you have been employed for two years, your employer can only dismiss you for specified fair reasons, such as gross misconduct or persistent poor performance. Except in the most serious cases of gross misconduct, your employer will be expected to follow a fair process and show the dismissal was for a fair reason. There are 2 ways you might be able to challenge your dismissal: • appealing through your employer’s appeal process • making a claim to an employment tribunal - if you have a genuine unfair dismissal claim and have worked for your employer for more than 2 years Before you appeal to your employer, you need to think carefully about whether you really want your job back. For most people, finding a new job as quickly as possible is the best way to move on from being dismissed. If you were dismissed for an ‘automatically unfair’ reason or you were discriminated against, you can make a claim to a tribunal no matter how long you’ve worked for your employer. You should contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you’re considering challenging your dismissal - an adviser can help you work out if you have a genuine claim, and your chances of winning it.
s U o t k l Ta
Appealing your dismissal with your employer You can try speaking with your employer to see if they will consider other options, like extra training or completing a probationary period. If you’re not comfortable speaking to your employer alone, you can get help from a trade union or other organisations. They can go to meetings with you and help negotiate with your employer. If your company has an appeal process, you can formally appeal your dismissal. Check your intranet or staff handbook, or speak to HR to see what you need to do. Start your appeal as soon as you can, as there’s a time limit if you later want to take legal action. The first step to legal action is a process called ‘early conciliation’ - you need to start it within 3 months less 1 day of the day you’re dismissed. If you’re running out of time, you can start early conciliation even if your appeal hasn’t finished. Even if you win your appeal, returning to your job might not be the best outcome for you. For example it might be better to leave with a good reference than stay in a job where you don’t feel fairly treated. Get help from Acas and ‘early conciliation’ If you’ve appealed or your employer doesn’t have an appeal process, you might be able to get help from an organisation called Acas. They’ll see if your employer will agree to a free process called ‘early conciliation’ - a way to resolve disputes without going to a tribunal. Get in touch with Acas as soon as you can - even if you don’t go through early conciliation, you need to have notified Acas before you can make a tribunal claim. You only have 3 months less a day from being dismissed to begin early conciliation or tell Acas
Acas Website: http://www.acas.org.uk Early conciliation helpline: 0300 123 1122 Deciding if you should make a tribunal claim Taking your employer to a tribunal is the final way you can challenge your dismissal. Tribunals can stressful, and you might not win your case. Before making a claim, you need to have: • already notified Acas • got an early conciliation certificate from Acas You might get some compensation if the tribunal rules in your favour. Any compensation will usually be based on your weekly pay. The tribunal will look at whether your employer acted reasonably under the law. For example, if your employer dismissed you for being aggressive, the tribunal will look to see if the decision to dismiss you was reasonable - not whether you were aggressive. You only have 3 months less a day from being dismissed to begin early conciliation or tell Acas you intend to make a claim to an employment tribunal, so contact your nearest Citizens Advice straight away if you’re thinking about making a claim. You’ll need to show the tribunal evidence that your employer didn’t have a fair reason for dismissing you.

Mini Police
The Mini Police program is written and delivered in such a way as to encourage and promote children to engage in their communities and to be ambassadors for good citizenship. This is happening across the county on a daily basis, with our Mini Police (and other children) doing ‘above and beyond’ to make their small part of the world a better place, from offering stickers to children for awesome playground behavior to going out into their community and engaging with the public, delivering the knowledge they have gained from our Mini Police curriculum where it matters most – their community. This really came to light recently in Wainfleet near Skegness. The River Steeping near Wainfleet burst its banks after more than double the average monthly rainfall fell in 3 days. As a result, the RAF, Police, Fire & Rescue and other services pulled together and the flood was contained. Hundreds of residents were evacuated and properties were left under water. The local primary school, The Magdalen Church of England / Methodist Primary School was closed for a week as a result. Pupils from the school, including some of our 8 Mini Police, volunteered to help with the flood recovery work, with some filling sandbags whilst others canoed (yes canoed) bottled water and supplies to residents trapped by floodwater. I was privileged to join the Mini Police team with their local PCSO Jayne Richardson and teacher Mrs. Wood as the Mini Police had a day of community engagement during the recovery phase of the flooding. The Mini Police met and learnt about the flooding and the response from Environment Agency staff, learning how the flooding was stopped and the support available to the local
community. They had the opportunity to look at the resources available including CCTV and drones, giving them enough information to be able to inform others about what happened and what is going on in response to it. They were joined by Assistant Chief Constable Shaun West and carried out a community litter pick, working with East Lindsay District Council to clean up any flood-related and general litter around the town. The Mini Police also delivered crime prevention advice, providing ‘No Cold Calling’ stickers and information to residents. They were fantastic at explaining the issue and how to combat it. Mini Police also found time to call in at a local residential care home, dropping off some biscuits and treats donated to the town. It was fantastic to witness 9, 10 and 11 year old children explain in great detail what happened, what was done to stop it and how the town was recovering
as a result. Building these kinds of relationships based on trust and respect between generations is a vital part of our community engagement strategy, and it was amazing to witness. The Magdalen Primary Mini Police were a fantastic example of community engagement, with them planning on assemblies to be able to share their learning with the rest of their school, making sure that all of the children (and therefore their families) were kept informed. Our Lincolnshire Mini Police program is all inclusive, and it is great to celebrate and showcase the amazing work our teams do across the county. It all comes down to what can be done when a community pulls together, and I wanted to highlight how the Mini Police we have grown now form part of an amazing group of people out there with one message – ‘We are here to help’.
The Mini Police program in Lincolnshire is expanding – if you know of a school who may want to join the program, please email us: mini.police@lincs.pnn.police.uk and one of our team will be in touch.
Please follow us on our social media pages to keep up-to-date with where we are and what we are doing:

Magdalene House Preparatory School Prep School Speech Day is a time of celebration and recognition for all the hard work from pupils, staff and families over the last academic year. This year the School welcomed Miss Phoebe Parker who plays for Norfolk United Netball Club, Premier Squad. Phoebe has also played for County/Country for Basketball and Netball. She gave an inspirational talk about the importance of being part of a team. “Your team are your people; these are the people you need around you to keep striving forward, whether in the classroom or on the sports pitch”. Phoebe then turned to the timeless quote from Charlotte’s Web, “Why did you do all this for me?’ he asked. ‘I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing.” Mrs K Neaves, Senior Deputy Head of Prep School, reflected on the year with a speech about being kind and thinking carefully before you speak. She said, “I love to read about the amazing journeys our pupils have travelled on this year, the successes they have had whether they be big or small … such as having the courage to walk into school through the gate leaving parents behind, tying their shoelaces for the first time, swimming a width of the pool, or having the courage to stand up and deliver their ESB presentation. We have seen a great deal of development around the school which will continue into the foreseeable future. This comes from a vision to improve the environment in which our children learn and to provide the resources to make their journey more enjoyable. Our Kindergarten
was created over the summer of 2018 and the Reception class was transformed into a bright, airy space. The Kindergarten has proved to be a great success, with a full roll for September 2019 and spaces filling up for the coming years. This September will see the largest intake into Reception since our Prep 6 class - who sit with us today as leavers - started their journey back in 2012”. My last piece of advice to you all is to work hard and play hard. Make the most of your time here. This school offers so many wonderful opportunities - all you need to do is grab each one with both hands and see where it will take you. You never know - might find yourself with talents you never knew you had!” Mrs Neaves announced the new officials for the next academic year, with Oliver Beck as Head Boy and Libby Hoyles as Head Girl. The House Cup was closely contested, with Clarkson declared the winners, by just one point. The final words of the day were summed up in a quote from Winnie the Pooh… “Be bold enough to use your voice, brave enough to listen to your heart and strong enough to live the life you’ve always imagined.”

Ayscoughfee Hall School Another term…indeed, another year….is drawing to a close at Ayscoughfee Hall School.
The Juniors are busy rehearsing for their end of year production, ‘Porridge’, and the whole school enjoyed Sports Day whilst the P.T.F.A arranged a summer fete which took place miraculously on the only dry evening of a very wet week! All our classes have been out on trips. Kindergarten went to Sacrewell Farm and Reception to Skegness Aquarium. Year 1 journeyed to Norfolk and the Dinosaur Park, where they had a fantastic day in the sun, whilst the rest of the school languished under rain clouds! Years 2 and 3 went to Cambridge, the former to the Greek Gallery at the Fitzwilliam Museum, the latter to the Botanic Gardens. All the Juniors went to Peterborough where they had a fantastic day at the Food and Farming Show. Children who have peripatetic music lessons have been performing in a series of Music Assemblies, with drums, guitar, flute, violin, piano,
saxophones and trumpets providing a loud and enthusiastic start to the week and we have also heard solos from the children who have been taking singing and theory lessons. It is hard to believe that we shall shortly say ‘Goodbye’ to our current Year 6 at the traditional Leaver’s Assembly and lunch. But as they leave us, so we welcome our new Kindergarten…and prepare to start a year of celebrations to mark our 100th birthday.
New College Stamford Over 350 guests enjoyed an evening celebrating outstanding student achievement last week at the Student Awards ceremony hosted at Borderville Sports Centre. The annual Student Awards ceremony is a celebration of student’s outstanding commitment, not only to college life but also to their studies and personal achievements over the past academic year. The awards ceremony showcases the determination and level of skill that students at New College Stamford are able to acquire during their studies. This year, more than 2000 students were entered into the competition, with 20 students crowned winners for their outstanding effort over the last academic year. Students were both nominated and voted for by staff
in their categories including: Entry Level, Level 1, 2 and 3 Awards for Excellence, Apprentice of the Year, Work Experience, Volunteer of the Year, and many more! We also invited our students to nominate a staff member who had particularly influenced their time at New College Stamford. The ceremony, hosted by Vice Principals’ Sarah Young and Matt Shough, was opened by an amazing performance by New College Stamford partners Eastern School of Performing Arts. As many of the students that won awards at the event will be leaving New College Stamford to progress their careers or continue onto higher level courses, undoubtedly, they will be entering their summer with a great sense of pride and achievement. A huge congratulations to all winners and those nominated this year!

Adult Book Choice Promising Young Women by Caroline O’Donoghue On the day of her 26th birthday, Jane is recently single, adrift at her job, and intrigued by why Clem - her much older, married boss - is singing to her. Meanwhile her alter-ego, the online agony aunt Jolly Politely, has all the answers. She’s provided thousands of strangers with insightful and occasionally cutting insights to contemporary life’s most vexing questions. When she and Clem kiss at a party, Jane does not follow the advice she would give to her readers as Jolly: instead she plunges head-first into an affair. One that could jeopardise her friendships, her career, and even her life.
Childrens Book Choice Ghosts of the Shadow Market By Cassandra Clare The Shadow Market is a meeting point for faeries, werewolves, warlocks and vampires. There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones. As a Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah is sworn keeper of the laws and lore of the Nephilim. In the Market is hidden a lost heir and a beloved ghost, and no-one can save you once you have traded away your heart. Not even Brother Zachariah.

Family Life
Time Out For Parents Babies and children, young and old, are allconsuming. It’s easy to lose track of yourself, not to mention your relationship. But it’s a pretty safe bet it took two to bring your baby into the world, and the two of you need to nurture yourselves as well as your youngster. Sure, for those early few months, you’re in a baby bubble – and rightly so. The last thing you probably feel like doing is leaving your fledgling, especially if you’re nursing. You’ll know when the time is right. And when you feel ready, you’re spoilt for choice! Let’s focus on parents of older ones first. How about a nice evening meal out, just the two of you, or with friends? A restaurant that is significant to you both as a couple, like the venue of your first date or marriage proposal maybe? Older children are more likely to lay in (at least until 6am!), making a meal out and then even a drink or two afterwards something to consider. A stay in a hotel
16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
or nice B&B could be on the cards if you speak to your babysitter nicely. Catch a show/band/sports event, or just enjoy a city break and a scenery change. Spas offer some wonderful treatments and pampering packages for couples. What better way to reconnect than being totally relaxed? Are you able to persuade your sitter to stay the course for a couple of nights, so you can have a mini break or rent a cottage as a couple? Some of your unmarried friends may be embarking on stag or hen weekends. As long as your partner is happy to take on childcare duties for the duration, you’re good to go – and have a great time! If your littlies are loath to let you leave for long, or you have no one to look after them, could you catch a couple of hours together when they are at nursery? Maybe watch a matinee? Lunch at one of our lovely local restaurants or pubs? Afternoon tea
out is a great way to spend quality time together, enjoy eating delicious treats and to reconnect as a couple. Even an hour spent with your significant other, chatting over coffee and cake, can be just the job. If you’re both into exercise, how about working out together for an hour or so? You can be back before your baby (big or small!) has a chance to miss you. You had a life before you became a mum, and it’s really important to rediscover your old self, your relationship with your significant other, and also with your friends. Take it from two partners in crime (read: middle-aged sisters and mums of a boy and a girl each), who rediscovered their love of watching live bands together when their kids hit school age, and their husbands offered to take over childcare duties during their weekend road trips. Time spent with your children is precious and a blessing – even more so when you’ve had a bit of time to yourself.

Past gardens in bloom with purples, yellows and reds to match my smart collar, and alongside a café especially for little ones as well as teashops for the bigger ones. Clothes, toys, electrical goods, dentists, doctors for poorly people and animals, and so much more – it seems everything is in Long Sutton! We pass a pet shop

shops, and I watch as my human’s friend disappears inside one, reappearing with a packet of biscuits. Oh dear – they look suspiciously like a non-doggy variety. I lick my lips all the same. I see so many people and cars busying about. Long Sutton sure is lively. Unlike me after our twohour odyssey. Apparently, there are two nice parks to see, but I’m just too tired, so we all return to base for a nice cup of tea. I stretch myself out on the soft carpet and doze, until I’m gently told it’s time to go. I leap into my travel box and sleep all the way home. And all the way to teatime. And soundly through the night too. What a great day!

M
otherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It’s the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary and an act of infinite optimism. I read somewhere today that it’s also one of life’s great contradictions. Loneliness and the need to be left alone, happy and exhausted, so ‘into it’ and so ‘over it’, so visionary and so withdrawn all at the same time. Until you’ve had a child, no one can prepare you for the vast array of emotions that you feel. Yes, they can tell you, and yes you can empathise what exhaustion feels like, but living the experience is the only way to turn your empathy into understanding. Even when you understand it, it’s not always easy to live with it or reconcile it with your new life as someone’s parent. You might love your children, but you might not want to have to deal with the baggage that brings with it. I like to think about motherhood (and life generally) in seasons. What I’ve realised is that every season will have both challenges and blessings unique to that season. It is helpful (although easier said than done) to articulate the challenges and then choose to focus on the blessings. One of the challenges of the baby/toddler years is frustration. You rise in the morning, get the house picked up, children fed, and by evening it’s all undone again. If someone were to ask you, “What did you accomplish today?” your response might be, “Nothing … I just got through it.” This sense of frustration caused by a lack of accomplishment is truly hard for those of us who are Type A
women. And it’s really hard if you have come home part-time or full-time from an exciting job where there is a sense of accomplishment. Other common challenges of motherhood that we all feel are: • Staying connected with myself separate from my role as a mother. • LETTING GO. Letting go of everything: ideas about time, ideas about achievement, ideas about perfection, ideas about motherhood. • Filling each day. Loneliness. Feeling like I’m doing enough to stimulate my baby. • Fatigue. Not having the time and energy to care for myself. • Isolation. Missing adult conversation. • Motherhood can be lonely and overwhelming. There just isn’t enough support. It’s hard not living up to expectations. • Knowing whose advice to take, what book to listen to. • Knowing what to do with my baby, making sure that I’m stimulating him enough. • Feeling like I’m fulfilling my duties as a Mum and staying at home: keeping the house tidy and cooking with a baby. • Connecting with other “like” women. Smaller casual encounters are needed to form stronger bonds and make real friends. Just like the seasons, all things change eventually. Even when you feel you will be stuck in your current season forever, things will change. The only constant in life and motherhood is change. As my grandmother used to say; this too will pass.
Love Annette xx

Over the past 15 years my interest in flowers and creating flower arrangements at weddings, flower festivals, Christmas and other special occasions has grown, with the support and encouragement from family, into completing practical workshops and educational training into the art of floristry. My dream, that was once a seed, has now flourished into owning my own business. Alongside my husband’s lifelong love of carpentry and furniture we decided to open a shop to incorporate both interests. We named our shop Rosewood Flowers and The Rustic Shed, a year ago this month. We are now one of the most well-known florists in the Long Sutton area, providing top quality fresh flowers to suit every taste and budget. Unique Beautiful Bespoke Flower Arrangements & Bouquets Rosewood Flowers offer bespoke flower bouquets and arrangements for all occasions. We
give you the opportunity to mix and match your favourite colours and flowers for that personalised touch and order to your specification. We are happy to give advice on flowers, their availability and how to care for them to give a longer life. We have a large flower cooler so that our flowers are kept at prime temperatures so that we supply fresh beautiful blooms.

Focus on Long Sutton Long Sutton was granted a charter for a weekly market in the 13th century, and the market continues to this day. St Mary’s church has a lovely spire of timber covered with lead, built to the same design as Chesterfield’s famous twisted spire, but in this case, the steeple stands straight and true! The town well known for its floral displays in spring and summer. History It may be hard to imagine it today, but Long Sutton was one of the busiest trading centres in eastern England during the early medieval period. Perhaps it was that prosperity that eventually brought the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin to Long Sutton. Turpin lived in the town for 9 months under an alias, and there is a road named after him. Another version of the story says that Turpin paused in the town on his desperate overnight ride from London to York to establish an alibi for a robbery he had committed. Harrison’s Mill The gaunt outline of Harrison’s Mill is a local landmark. The mill was built in 1843 for Charles Treffitt. It stands 6 stories high. It was driven by wind, utilising 6 sails to drive 3 sets of grinding stones. The sails were disconnected in the 1920s and the mill was driven by engine power. The sails were removed in the 1930s and used for Brunswick mill. Long Sutton mill was then gutted and left to decay. The wooden upright shaft remains in place, with sections of gearing, but other than that the mill is ruinous. Seagate Hall On Vicarage Lane 24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
stands Seagate Hall, built in the late 18th century to serve as a residence for Thomas Leigh-Bennett, vicar of St Mary’s church. The house, begun around 1784, incorporates part of an earlier Tudor building. For 2 centuries it served as a vicarage and for 120 of those years, the vicars were members of the same LeighBennett family. St Mary’s Church The pretty medieval church is known for its lead-covered spire, but there is much more to see! The building dates to the late 12th or early 13th century, replacing a wooden church built in 1120 by Robert de Haia. The striking west tower was originally freestanding and only linked to the body of the church when the aisles were extended. There are fragments of stained glass dating to 1380, and more from the 14th and 15th century. One of the windows depicts part of a Jesse Tree, the mythological family tree of Christ. Look for the grave slab of John Bailey, a local surgeon killed by robbers in 1795 while returning from visiting a patient. The grave slab is inscribed ‘Alas Poor Bailey’. There are a 12thcentury font and a 15thcentury brass lectern, plus a poor box dated 1712.

Health & Beauty
Be Safe in The Sun If you’re heading to the sun over the summer then taking precautions in the heat iis vital. Here is what the NHS has to say about sunburn, suncreams and SPFs.
Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn does not just happen on holiday. You can burn in the UK, even when it’s cloudy. There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan does not protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects. Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight. Sun safety tips Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March
to October. Make sure you: • spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm • make sure you never burn • cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses • take extra care with children • use at least factor 30 sunscreen
What factor sunscreen (SPF) should I use? Do not rely on sunscreen alone to protect yourself from the sun. Wear suitable clothing and spend time in the shade when the sun’s at its hottest. When buying sunscreen, the label should have: • a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to protect against UVB • at least 4-star UVA protection UVA protection can also be indicated by the letters “UVA” in a circle, which indicates that it meets the EU standard.
Make sure the sunscreen is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. Do not spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. What are the SPF and star rating? The sun protection factor, or
32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
SPF, is a measure of the amount of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) protection. SPFs are rated on a scale of 2 to 50+ based on the level of protection they offer, with 50+ offering the strongest form of UVB protection. The star rating measures the amount of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) protection. You should see a star rating of up to 5 stars on UK sunscreens. The higher the star rating, the better. The letters “UVA” inside a circle is a European marking. This means the UVA protection is at least a third of the SPF value and meets EU recommendations. Sunscreens that offer both UVA and UVB protection are sometimes called broad spectrum.. How to apply sunscreen Most people do not apply enough sunscreen. As a guide, adults should aim to apply around: • 2 teaspoons of sunscreen if you’re just covering your head, arms and neck • 2 tablespoons if you’re covering your entire body while wearing a swimming costume If sunscreen is applied too thinly, the amount of protection it gives is reduced. If you’re worried you might not be applying enough SPF30, you could
use a sunscreen with a higher SPF. If you plan to be out in the sun long enough to risk burning, sunscreen needs to be applied twice: • 30 minutes before going out • just before going out Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears, and head if you have thinning or no hair, but a widebrimmed hat is better. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied liberally and frequently, and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This includes applying it straight after you have been in water, even if it’s “water resistant”, and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. It’s also recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, as the sun can dry it off your skin.

During the day the team at Molsom & Associates shared information about the importance of wearing good fitting, quality polarised sunglasses. They also offered a complimentary UV checking service for people, helping to ensure any sunglasses being worn provided the best protection for their eyes, with mixed results from the many pair tested! Two very lucky people won prize draws held on the day and received their very own pair of Maui Jim sunglasses from Molsom & Associates. #molsommole will now be joining the Molsom team on their school visits and has started with attending St John’s Primary school Summer Fayre. As you can see from the photos he had lots of fun! This year these visits have evolved slightly to involve visiting pre schools and encouraging eye examinations for all children starting “big school” in
September. Bridget and Vicky have been visiting primary schools in the Spalding area as part of Molsom & Associates community focus. They provide a talk and interactive session focused on the importance of good eye health, regular eye examinations and protecting eyes in the sun. It was during these visits they realised, with no formal school screening for children’s eyes in our area, that a lot of children had not visited an Optician for an eye examination. The children had visited the dentist for dental check up’s and had their feet measured for new school shoes,
but eye examinations were being overlooked. Children do not always know that their vision is not “normal”. This can then affect their ability to read, write and learn preventing them fulfilling their full academic potential. So, Molsom & Associates decided to expand their school visits to pre-school aged children and attend school induction evenings to spread the word and ensure as many children had eye examination as possible. The feedback from parents and carers has been positive. Helping to ensure all parents are aware an
eye examination for children looks at the general health of the eye as well as colour vision, ability to focus and visual needs during the eye examination. Children are never too young to have their sight tested either as pictures can be used during the test instead of letters. Children under the age of 16 or below the age of 19 and in full time education are also entitled to an NHS funded examination! If in doubt always seek advice from your local Optician. You can call us on 01775 713366 to book appointments in our children’s clinics and speak to our friendly staff with any concerns. If you feel you have an event you would like #molsommole to attend, please call Vicky on 01775 713366 to check his diary. School visits and preschool visits can be booked with Bridget on the same number.

Fencing
There’s a new kid on the block!
Natural wood has long been the preeminent material for residential landscape fencing. Easy to cut and assemble, widely available, and relatively affordable, wood fencing can be adapted to just about any landscape style and is a relatively easy material for DIYers to work with. Its natural appeal has made wood the first choice for most homeowners for many years. But recent years have seen a newly manufactured contender enter the arena. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic is a petroleum-based product that has a variety of uses in the building trades, and one of its recent adaptations is for landscape fencing materials. Products Made from the same plastic that is used in white plastic plumbing pipes, PVC is gradually becoming widely used in fencing materials. Some DIY stores now stock PVC fencing components as well as preassembled panels in a limited range of colours. The first PVC fences were simple white plastic panels with shiny surfaces—not very natural looking— but additional colours have now been introduced, including brown wood tones. Some PVC fencing is now even textured to resemble wood. These days, nearly any fencing style can be constructed in PVC. A point-by-point comparison between PVC and traditional wood will help you decide if PVC is the right option for your fence.
Appearance Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and nowhere is this truer than with landscape fences. Most people will find real wood to be more attractive than PVC plastic fencing, thanks in large part to wood’s flexibility. Wood is an adaptable material that can be left to weather naturally, or it can be stained or painted however you want. A wood fence can be custom-built to make it quite unique to your landscape, and it can readily be adapted to uneven building sites. Vinyl, on the other hand, tends to look best where it tries to mimic the look of a traditional white-painted fence, but even here it is hard to fully overcome the artificial look. Older vinyl fences and less expensive new products have a shiny surface that looks somewhat artificial. As PVC fences weather, the shininess may give way to a chalky coating that dulls the look of the fence. It is hard to get a “designer” look when building with mass-produced PVC panels. One advantage that PVC owns is that its colour will not change and it will not require repainting, as does wood. Except for dirt and moss, white PVC fencing will stay white, year after year after year. Of course, this can also be a drawback—once you’ve installed your PVC fence, you are stuck with its appearance and colour for its lifetime. Unlike wood, PVC cannot
36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
be easily painted a different colour if you want to change its appearance. Some of PVC’s liabilities are gradually being removed as manufacturers offer additional colours and have now introduced textures into their products. And add-on features like lattice panels and shaped post caps are making PVC fences a bit less utilitarian than they once were. One option if you want a betterlooking fence that still has some of the advantages of vinyl is a wood-composite fence. Made from the same blend of wood fibres and plastic resins as used in synthetic decking, these fence products are very durable and stable. However, wood-composite fencing is not cheap—expect to pay at least twice as much as for a PVC or wood fence. Ease of Installation Both wood and vinyl fences typically come out better when installed by a professional fence company. For any type of fence, digging post holes and setting posts
is a very difficult task. Typically fence posts should be buried to at least one-third of their length. After that, the posts must be set in concrete. Multiply this task by 20 fence posts, and you can see why so many homeowners hand this job off to a fencing contractor. But if you are a dedicated DIYer, vinyl fencing is actually a bit easier to work with than wood, since the posts and panels are considerably lighter than wood posts and panels. Many PVC fence products are designed for easy assembly, with posts that are notched to accept rails and matching panel brackets available. As with any large project, working slowly and in discrete stages will make the work easier. Plan to take your time, and be especially diligent in the layout and when installing the posts. Remember that both wood and vinyl fencing installations can sometimes require planning approval so always speak to the local planning office before committing to a large job.
