Welcome to the August issue What a lovely summer we are having, we have had lots of days out enjoying the weather – we have been over to the Norfolk coast, Rutland Water, as well as more local days at Ayscoughfee gardens, Surfleet Park and walks to our local park, there’s lots to do right on our doorstep! In this issue we are looking at dealing with toddler tantrums, looking after your eyes as well as celebrating several British food traditions – pub grub, afternoon tea and a summertime pint in a beer garden! We are also looking at Market Deeping’s raft race who are celebrating 55 years in 2017, so if you’ve not got any plans for August 6th why not head over to our neighbouring town and see what they have to offer? Whilst the weather is still nice it’s a great opportunity to get all those outside jobs done, we are looking at fencing this month, do you know what your legal responsibilities are? Finally this month Tim is reviewing the Peugeot 3008. I would like to say thank you to local resident Pip Dunn for supplying this month’s cover picture of The Flying Scotsman which passed through

NEWS Springfields submit planning application for £1 million play area investment SLR Outlets, who operate the Springfields Outlet Shopping Centre have submitted a planning application which, if successful, would deliver a major improvement to the leisure offer at the Spalding-based attraction and create up to 40 new jobs. The improvements would see a £1 million investment into an imaginative new entertainment centre for all ages, incorporating a range of new and exciting play activities. At its heart, the new development would host the biggest ever JCB Young Driver Zone, an attraction which includes a large track for pedal diggers, huge JCB slide, scaffold themed climbing frame and other unique interactive play equipment. The JCB zone recreates a miniature village and construction site and will contain everything from the health and safety briefing classroom for budding operators through to a large track and building site where children can experience both fun and educational play. Along with introducing a new JCB Young Driver Zone, the proposed improvements to the leisure offering at Springfields will also see a new High Top Hobbit Village wooden climbing and play facility created. Further

changes will see a new sheltered infant sand play and seating area. Springfields would also be host to what is believed to be Lincolnshire’s only gold panning activity area. The proposed new leisure offer will be situated within the Festival Gardens at Springfields and will be accessed via the existing Craft Cafe. The Craft Cafe building itself will be refurbished to house a new American-themed diner. The popular Jurassic themed Dinosaur miniature golf

course will also be fully refurbished. Ian Sanderson of SLR Outlets said: “We are proposing really exciting changes to the leisure offer at Springfields which will help us to strengthen our position as Lincolnshire’s leading outlet centre. Getting JCB on board is a major coup for the area, in the face of increasing competition elsewhere. The planning application will be determined by South Holland District Council.

Challenging weekend culminates with another win for Caterham racer Andy Molsom Despite the recent rain, a dry weekend greeted Molsom in North Yorkshire for Rounds 8 and 9 of the Caterham Graduates Super Championship In qualifying, Molsom was on track early to gain track position. After his first warm up lap, Molsoms car ground to a halt after the first corner of Clervaux. Despite all his efforts, the car wouldn’t restart, and a red flag was thrown as Molsom was stopped in a dangerous position. After jump starting the car from the towtruck, he was able to make his way back out onto the circuit, but the same happened again, except this time Molsom was able to park up safely for the session to continue. This meant that Molsom had only one timed lap, and after some discussion was allowed to race, but starting from the back of the mixed grid. The car was fixed ready for Saturday afternoons race, the problem being a faulty FIA Master switch. Molsom lined up on the grid in 14th place, with his main rival Briant some 11 places ahead. A great start and first lap meant Molsom was already upto 9th place, and constantly pushing meant that Molsom gradually made his way onto the back of Briant by lap 12. Unfortunately Molsom ran out

of time in the next 2 laps to challenge Briant, instead having a battle with previous Champion, Halley, in a MegaGraduate car to retain track position. Molsom finished the race a worthy 2nd in class, and 6th on the road in the mixed class of Mega and SuperGraduate cars. Sundays race meant a start right at the back of 16 cars on the grid. Molsom again made a good start, and had gained 4 places by the end of the first lap. Molsom stamped his authority on the race, by catching class leader Briant by lap 5, passing him half a lap later, where he stayed until the end despite a battle for the lead with White towards the end of the race, as Molsom got caught up with a lapped car on the exit of the chicane. Molsom finished 5th on the road, and 1st in class. “Motor racing can be a roller-coaster ride of emotions sometimes, and I certainly found some of the highs and lows this weekend, to win my class from the back of the grid still feels unreal.” added Andy Molsom of Molsom & Associates Optometrists, Hall Place, Spalding who are celebrating their 20th year of business.

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Nick’s Notes

J

uly got off to a busy start with the Holbeach Food Festival and a record attendance of around 2,000, due to perfect weather and our new location in Carter’s Park.

This encouraged people from Tesco and the town centre with the sound of music emanating from the park and wonderful smells wafting past people’s noses as they wandered around. Stall holders sold out of toffee vodka, cakes, cider and vegetable recipes, Bakkavor made 200 pizzas to order, our fish stall sold 60 crabs and even Limmings selling garden furniture did a roaring trade, so a lot of happy people! I had no time to relax though as I then spent three days at the Local Government Association’s annual conference in Birmingham. Under the watchful eye of LGA Chairman, Lord Porter of Spalding, (who really has put South Holland on the map nationally in this role). The Conference got off to a great start with his opening speech, which was more than could be said of the Secretary of State for Local Government who managed to upset the entire conference with his, on the back of the Grenfell Tower Fire and his implications that local government as a whole needed to step up to the plate. I am pleased to say in Lincolnshire the Fire and Rescue service continues to work with businesses, hospitals, housing associations and local government providing advice and regular inspections of their premises. We are of course

“Thankfully in Lincolnshire we can sleep a lot better in the knowledge we have such a professional service on our doorstep.”

fortunate to have few high rise blocks in Lincolnshire, most of which are situated in Lincoln. Fire and Rescue spend a considerable amount of time doing rigorous training exercises including in tower blocks, provide advice on planning applications and covering a variety of potential emergency situations including flooding, train crashes, water rescue and potential terrorism threats, so trying to cover all eventualities as well as responding to day to day fires, accidents and fire prevention work along with co-responding along side the ambulance service to people who have life threatening illnesses. Thankfully in Lincolnshire we can sleep a lot better in the knowledge we have such a professional service on our doorstep. Also at the conference were a number of announcements from the Department of Transport around increased funding for our national network of roads like the A1, funding for some of our A roads which the County Council will be putting in bids for and continued funding for potholes, all of which is very welcome news. In South Holland our latest business breakfast had Brexit and skills as its theme and were fortunate to have our MP, John Hayes, Minister for Transport as the key speaker, where he was asked a number of challenging questions about the future of the agri-food dominated workforce, apprenticeships, infrastructure and the environment. I am now off to Holbeach to discuss the opportunities for the Conservation area and centre of town with a representative of English Heritage, County and District Council to see what funding is available for the regeneration of the town centre, alongside work already started on some quick wins from the recent retail survey of the town. The town itself is looking good in readiness for the” In Bloom “ competition, no doubt fiercely contested in Spalding, Donington, Long Sutton and Crowland as well. Good luck to you all! Nick

Protect Your Home We thought we’d share some ways to protect your home during the moonlight hours.

A

re you aware that some local areas now experience night time blackouts? Cuts by local councils mean some street lights are being turned off from midnight until 6am. If you feel vulnerable you can improve the lighting around your own home by having LED lighting installed to come on during the night.

Peace of Mind with Digital CCTV

Let There Be Light… LED Security Lights

Electrical Testing & Inspection

Lighting can be triggered by movement sensors, timers or both • LED lights are low energy and cost less to run than traditional lighting • LED lights last considerably longer than traditional lighting • We can install Digital CCTV at the same time to offer further protection

The current British Standards require that domestic electrical systems are inspected within ten years, or sooner. K A Goulden Electrical carry out hundreds of inspections in domestic properties every year on behalf of Landlords, home owners, sellers & buyers. Landlords should have their properties electrically inspected more frequently, and especially upon change of tenancy. Once the inspection is completed you will be provided with either a ‘Satisfactory Certificate’ or an ‘Unsatisfactory Certificate’ together with a comprehensive list of remedial works required, accompanied by an estimate to carry out the works.

Investment in the benefits of LED lighting will result in greener energy usage and give a reduced carbon foot print; it will also immediately save you money on energy bills. This greener energy lighting is achieved as the light emitting diodes used in LED lighting run at a much lower wattage than conventional incandescent lamps. For example, just a five watt LED lamp will produce the same equivalent light when compared to a traditional fifty watt halogen light bulb!

We can help protect your home or business by installing modern Digital CCTV with good quality, high definition cameras. Our systems are easy to use, giving you peace of mind a discreet deterrent to keep thieves away from your property. You can view the live CCTV via an app on your smart phone or tablet.

the difference between a flat screen TV and one that is 30 years old… new fuse boards have up to date technology too! This includes metal cases for fire resistance, to comply with new regulations and miniature circuit breakers (MCB’s), not fuses. The protection and convenience is much better now by using residual current devices (RCD’s) within modern fuse boards, greatly reducing the risk of fire or electrocution. We install only new metal clad distribution boards, sometimes known as consumer units or fuse boards, to replace your old obsolete fuse board with a brand new, up to date solution that complies with the latest British Standards.

A Little Bit About K A Goulden Electrical Limited We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and suppliers for your continued support as we celebrate our eighteenth birthday during 2017. K A Goulden Electrical was set up solely by Kelvin Goulden in 1999 as a user friendly, approachable electrical contractor with high ethical standards. We try to bring perfection to our customers as they deserve nothing less. Contact us today for all your electrical needs at home or work: For any work carried out by K A Goulden Electrical, a one year parts and labour guarantee is provided. Advice

Dealing with

Council Tax arrears If you’ve missed a Council Tax payment, you’re in ‘arrears’ - this means you owe money to your council. Don’t wait for them to contact you. You should contact your council straight away. Ask to speak to someone in the Council Tax office and tell them about your situation. If you ignore Council Tax arrears, it’s likely your council will take you to court quickly to get all the money at once. You’ll have to pay court costs and possibly bailiff fees as well as your debt, which can add hundreds of pounds to your bill. Council Tax arrears is a ‘priority debt’. This means you need to pay it before debts like credit cards. What is a priority debt A priority debt is one where the creditor’s ultimate sanction may result in you losing your:• liberty; or • home; or • essential supplies, for example, gas or electricity; or • in some circumstances, essential goods.

If you have more than one debt, you should read our ‘get help with debt’ guide or contact your nearest Citizens Advice. If you can’t pay your Council Tax Ask your council if they’ll let you pay your Council Tax in smaller amounts. You’ll probably be asked to commit to paying a regular amount each month. If you’re not sure how much you can afford, you can talk to a specialist adviser at Citizens Advice. If you’re on a low income, you might be able to get a reduction on your Council Tax bill. When you miss a Council Tax payment You’ll get a reminder from the council about 2 weeks after you miss a payment. If you pay within 7 days, you don’t need to do anything else. The debt will be clear and you’ll be able to continue paying your Council Tax in instalments. Check the letter you get from the council to make sure you pay your Council Tax arrears into the right bank account. It might be different to the one you normally pay your Council Tax instalments into.

Citizens Advice

...give free, confidential, impartial and independ ent advice to help you solve your problems

If you don’t pay within 7 days of the reminder If you don’t pay within 7 days of the reminder (or if it’s the third time you’ve been late with Council Tax payments this year), the council will send you a ‘final notice’. The final notice will tell you to pay all of your Council Tax for the rest of the year within 7 days. If you don’t pay within 7 days of the final notice Your council will usually apply to the courts for permission to collect the debt from you - this is known as a ‘liability order’. They might send a bailiff to your home or take money from your pay. The court can also take money from benefits payments like: • Income Support • Employment and Support Allowance • Jobseeker’s Allowance • Pension Credit • Universal Credit If the court gives the council a liability order, you’ll have to pay the cost of the court fees. You might also have to pay bailiff fees. If you still don’t pay In extreme cases you could go to prison, but normally only if you’re deliberately not paying your Council Tax.

School news

The Priory School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Priory School pupils enjoyed a super end to their activity days recently with lunch provided at Indus Restaurant in Spalding. Owner Mr Hansen laid on a feast of poppadum, chicken korma, chicken masala, tarka dahl, rice and naan bread for a class of Year 8 pupils. Several pupils were convinced that they didn’t like Indian food, but all agreed after the plates were ‘eaten clean’ that the food was delicious. It was definitely three cheers for the chef at Indus. Priory school

pupils would recommend ‘everyone gives it a try after today’, said Mrs Georgina Freeman, teacher at Priory School.

Our Year 6 children who have opted to take part in the 11+ examinations for a selective place at secondary school will be

Boston College Boston College and The Federation of Small Businesses joined together to recognise the hard work of Apprentices and Trainees and their employers by hosting the Boston College and FSB Apprenticeship Awards. The awards focus on celebrating the success of Apprentices and Trainees and appreciating the key roles that good employers play when it comes to developing the skilled workforce of the future. The Apprentices’ Employer or Assessor made nominations for the awards and the nominees were then judged on feedback from the employer, taking into account the quality of their work and ability to adapt to a working environment. The event was held at Boston College’s Sam Newsom Centre and offered awards in the following Apprenticeship areas; Accounting, Retail and Business, Animal Care and Science, Catering and Hospitality, Computing and Engineering, Construction, Joinery and Plumbing, Early Years and Teaching, Electrical, Hair and Beauty, Health and Social Care and Motor Vehicle. Prizes on offer to those nominated included medals, certificates, vouchers, tools and equipment. There was also a special award for the ‘Apprentice of the Year 2017’, awarded to Kelsey Daw, an Apprentice at Strands of Spalding. For the success and recognition in her role Kelsey received a £50 voucher and a personal trophy. 12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Tempest will be coming into school in October to take individual photographs of all children, and sibling groups.

Family life

Dealing with Toddler Tantrums Family Life

Tantrums are perhaps one of the most difficult areas of children’s behaviour for parents to manage. They are both stressful and potentially embarrassing, which makes it extremely hard for parents to remain calm during toddler tantrums. Nobody who has ever been a parent will ever judge anyone because their child is having a tantrum. Precious few who have not had children will do so either. Bear this in mind, and you will find it much easier to remain calm and non-embarrassed in the face of a screaming, red-faced toddler. There are several basic ways to manage tantrums. These include:

Avoidance A behaviour diary may show you some easy ways to change your actions and routines that may have a huge impact on your child’s behaviour.

Do they need more routine around feeding and sleeping? If tea-time is fixed by other events, do you need to provide a snack after your child’s afternoon sleep to keep them going? Subtle changes may often have a big impact on behaviour, so don’t be afraid to try things out to see what happens. You can also use avoidance techniques for non-compliance and defiance. For example, if getting ready to go out is always a trial, try making it a race. Say ‘I bet I can get ready to go out quicker than you can’, or ‘I bet I can tie my shoelaces faster than you can get your shoes on’. Competition is a great incentive! The important thing is to avoid either of you getting backed into a corner where confrontation is the only way out.

Distraction Once you know what is likely to trigger your child’s tantrums, you may be able to head them off, with a bit of judicious distraction. Point out something interesting, or ask what they would like to do later/tomorrow/at the weekend, or speculate on what you might have for lunch. It doesn’t matter what you say, as long as it is interesting and different enough to catch their attention and help them move away from the problem issue.

Ignoring Often tantrums and tears are about attention. Ignoring them, therefore, sends a very strong message to your child, and will not be AT ALL what they want.

Fairytales and Legends

The novelty of being ignored may even be enough to stop them in their tracks. Over time, it will ensure that they abandon the tantrums in favour of actions that get your attention, such as asking nicely. Ignoring a tantrum can be quite hard, especially if you are out and about. You may need to just sit down and wait for the screaming to stop. .

The hugely successful Fairytales and Legends returns to King’s Lynn town centre on Sunday 20 August for a day of magic, enchantment, princesses and superheroes! This free event is a great day out for children and families, packed full of things to see and do. Activities take place from 10am to 4pm at various locations around the town centre. Abbie Panks, Vancouver Quarter centre manager, said: “The day’s programme has something for children of all ages, from sound-play classes for toddlers, to craft workshops for older children. “Every event is free of charge, making this the perfect day out for all the family. Some activities need to be pre-booked, and I recommend you do so as early as possible. We’d also like to invite all children to come along in fancy dress!” Discover more at www.vancouverquarter.com/ fairytalesandlegends2017

Consequences If your child is capable of listening to you, and not so deep in screaming that you cannot communicate at all, then you may want to use this option. Tell them once nicely, making eye contact and smiling, what you want them to do. In this case, it is likely to be ‘stop shouting and behave nicely’. If they do not do it, ask them again, firmly, explaining briefly what will happen if they do not do as you ask (for example, they will have to sit on the bottom step of the stairs for a short time, or go to their room). If they still do not do it, then deliver on the consequence, calmly and firmly.

Deeping Raft Race Celebrates 55 Years!

C

an you believe it’s now 55 years since the first raft race? The event has been in its current format for over 20 years and it just gets bigger and better every year. This year’s theme is Great Britain, so expect red, white and blue to be everywhere on August 6th! Attracting over 2500 visitors, it’s the biggest event of its kind in Lincolnshire and a great day out for all the family. So what’s new? Well, in Deeping St James there will be a marching band and a fitness zone with roller skating provided by the local Skate Company and jive dancing from The Boston Jive, both of which you can join in with just for the fun of it. Food, drink and ice cream are available as well. Also new for this year is the Children’s

Activity Area hosted by Deepings Community Centre – this will be packed with fun things for the little ones to do – either free of charge or for a pound a go. Where else can you go and get a virtually free fun time with the whole family? In Market Deeping High Street there is planned to be a host of stalls offering a multitude of items for sale, with lots of local charities tempting you with their fundraising efforts. The ever-popular Beer Bus is back if you fancy quenching your thirst on the move. There will of course be lots of races to watch, and all will be hotly contested, so make sure you give them all a good cheer along the way. All proceeds from the day will be distributed to local charities. Last £6000 was raised and distributed – the

The Races In the morning there will be a parade of rafts from The Waterton Arms, along Bridge Street, to the Start Line, near the metal footbridge. Before entering the water, the organisers will be interviewing the rafters over the loudspeakers, so that spectators can get to know the teams and whether they have chosen to race alone or against another raft. Spectators here will be able to see the rafts first enter the water, and if they actually float!

The Mini Raft Race will start around 11am, and hopefully lots of children will enter to make it a real battle. Noon sees the start of the Youth Race, which is open to everyone under 18 (an adult may be on the younger children’s raft for safety reasons). The Main, Ladies and Bruce Tokens Memorial Race will take place in the afternoon. Don’t forget to go and view the Cake

Competition entrants, enter the Treasure Hunt, and go along to the stage area towards the end of the day, to applaud the winners. Also to visit all the stallholders: they are local small businesses or charities and are all contributing to the grand total.

organisers hoping too beat this in 2017!

Raft Race History by Andy Pelling I’ve only been involved with the Raft Race for around five years, but as a spectator I’ve enjoyed many, dating back to when I moved here in 1992. According to locals (I’ve only been in Deeping for 25 years), its origins were earlier than that, starting out as part of a bet between 2 individuals in a pub so alcohol was almost certainly involved! Over the years I’ve been here, I’ve seen some massive events, in the days when the field on the South side of the river was used, and some smaller but equally fun races too. The ingenuity of some Raft designs and costumes never fails to amaze me. Many well known (dare I say infamous?) and not so well known (light under bushels) characters have been involved in helping to promote this unique and fun event. The current committee is a small group of volunteers, and I’m pleased to say that this year the committee has grown with a few very keen and enthusiastic recruits who are bringing some great ideas forward. For the events I that have been involved with, we have had good weather and a great turn out (apart from one rainy year). Some serious money has been raised for local causes (over £12,000 in the last 2 years – not to mention what others raise on the day). There’s a huge amount of work that goes into the Raft Race, planning starts in September and many local businesses get involved with support and sponsorship, so even if we are unlucky with the weather this year, do please still come along. After all, a big part of it is about getting wet and there is so much going on that you will still have a great time!

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Health & beauty

The eyes have it! Brows Today our eyebrows get more care than ever before, but what treatments are there out there for you?

Microblading Microblading is a great means for women and men to thicken their existing eyebrows or darkening them thus making them more apparent by enhancing the most natural brows possible. This technique mimics your own eyebrow hairs which creates a feathering effect. By adding coloured pigment to the skin, this technique fills in empty spots on your brows to give them a full and flawless look. How is Microblading done? • An anesthetic cream is applied to reduce the sensation of pain • Once the desired brows are traced, a small blade is used to cut very small pieces of the top of layer of the skin away and apply the color which best matches your brow • There may be some redness and minor swelling, but that should disappear within a few hours to a couple of days.

BEFORE

AFTER

• The colour will likely fade by about 50 to 70 percent in the first two weeks so a followup session will be required. • It is important to avoid scrubbing the brow area or picking off any scabs that may form, in order to protect the new eyebrows. Is it safe? • In order to make sure you get the best quality treatment and minimize your risk for infection, make sure your technician is qualified and certified by a reputable company and has been performing the procedures for a minimum of 12 months.

HD Brows There are a number of steps – usually seven to create the perfect HD Brow. The whole appointment usually takes around 40 minutes, so it’s much more thorough than a standard eyebrow wax/thread and tint. It’s also worth leaving your brows alone for a few weeks so you get the best possible results. First you’ll have a consultation where the Brow Stylist talks through your brows, the shape, the colour and how you want them to look. It’s here you can talk about any issues you have with them – whether there are sparse areas or you’re unhappy with the shape, and they can advise on where to go

from there. If you are looking for thicker, fuller brows, it might be that you and your Brow Stylist decide on a regrowth programme but again, this will differ depending on what they’re like. If the eyebrows are overplucked you’ll work with them to grow in certain areas and you’ll be shown how to fill them in properly in between appointments and this is likely to take more appointments. If it’s only a certain area or row to grow back in, it will take fewer apointments. The next step is tinting the brows. The colour is matched to the hair colour and style that’s wanted so they don’t end up looking out of place. They apply the dye before any of the shaping starts so that it grabs onto all of the little baby hairs you might have so these can then be styled and help to fill out the brows. Once the dye has taken, the shaping starts. This is a mixture of waxing, threading (for the areas the wax may have missed) and plucking for any final stray hairs.

Wax & Tint A more traditional beauty treatment is a simple wax and tint. A colour dye is applied to your brows to match or darken your natural colour and then wax is used to remove any excess hair. You may also find your therapist will pluck any stray hairs which miss the wax! This treatment is great for anyone who isn’t looking to fill out their brows but to tidy them up.

Top Tips For Looking After Your Eyes We only get one pair of eyes and they work extremely hard for you during your life. With sight loss being the one sense that many fear about losing, it is vital that you look after your eyes in every way possible. Regular Eye Examinations Having an eye test isn’t merely just to see if you need glasses, but now considered as an important health examination that looks at both the health of your eye, as well as your general health. It is recommended that you have your eyes tested at least once every 2 years, although in some cases, more regular checkups are advised. You may even be entitled to an NHS funded test, so

call your local optician to find out more! Not Smoking Smoking has been proven to cause sight loss in multiple ways. Smoking greatly accelerates the progression of cataracts and puts your retina under great strain, leading to an increased risk of macular degeneration (a severe form of sight loss). You are also much more likely to have a contact lens problem if you smoke, which again may lead to a painful and sight threatening condition. Sun Protection The sun is a big source of ultraviolet (UV) light. We all think of sun cream to protect our skin but how do you

protect your eyes? (I’m not advising using sun cream in your eyes!). UV causes changes to the conjunctiva, the cornea and the crystalline lens, leading to raised yellow regions around the white of the eye and also speeding up the development of cataracts. UV can also lead to skin cancers, so we advise use of suncream on the face and around the eyelids. UV protective sunglasses, that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB radiation. If you use contact lenses, discuss with your optometrist ones that have a UV block to them. Eat Right The right diet is key when looking

after your eye health. A diet that is rich in fruit, vegetables and protein can really make a difference in regulating your eye health. A diet rich in dark green leafy vegetables (such as kale and spinach) helps keep the retina healthy, with flaxseed oil and omega essential fatty-acids helping regulate a healthy tear film, reducing the feeling of a dry eye. Safety First Make sure to consider your eye health when doing DIY or any other hazardous tasks. Safety lenses and frames can make a difference to being able to see your finished creation and a trip to A & E!

Thinking of Starting a Business? Duncan & Toplis can Help!

here are an ever increasing number of entrepreneurs starting their own businesses, but if you are considering this how do you go

about it? The first question to ask is, “what will my business be doing?” and more importantly, “is there a demand for what I will be offering?” Market research is vital and would normally include looking at what other similar businesses are offering to determine if there is a viable market for your business at a suitable price. This research doesn’t have to be costly or time consuming but should ask some tough questions to get honest answers. Once a market place has been identified

the business can work on the specifics of their offering. At this stage, key suppliers and advisers should be identified who will be central to both setting up the business and its continued operation. Building good relationships now will often save time and spread the load of the many tasks that need to be completed. The information gained, together with financial projections, will form the basis of the Business Plan that should be used and shared as the business moves forward. This shouldn’t be seen as a static document to gather dust but an ever changing plan which will need regularly updating as situations change. The Business Plan will include details of the resources needed to operate the business

and the cost of these resources. There are many different sources of external finance and your business advisers should be able to make the suitable introductions that best fits the individual circumstances. Finally, you have a choice of business structure ensuring the best one is chosen for the business taking into account such areas as ownership, taxation and risks. Starting a business for the first time should be an exciting and enjoyable time. A well thought out Business Plan is vital to ensuring a business will be both rewarding and successful. To find out how Duncan & Toplis can help your business idea become a success please contact us for a free consultation.

Tastes so good... Risotto is a northern Italian rice dish, that’s quick to prepare and yet a satisfying meal. Great for using up leftovers, why not experiment to add new ingredients?

Risotto INGREDIENTS

Ingredients for 2 servings 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic 2 small sticks of celery Half a red pepper, chopped into small pieces 1 vegetable stock cube 200ml boiling water 4 small handfuls of risotto rice Bacon (optional to make a non-vegetarian version) Parmesan cheese to top (if required)

Method • Heat some oil in a pan. • Lightly brown the onion and add the garlic • Add the rest of the chopped ingredients and fry for a couple of minutes until slightly softened. • Add the risotto rice and fry, stirring regularly for another couple of minutes. • Add the stock cube to the boiling water and pour onto the rice dish. • Cover with a lid and reduce the heat. • Once all the liquid has been absorbed, your dish is ready to serve.

Chocolate chip mini muffins

A lunchbox treat or perfect for picnics! INGREDIENTS Makes 24 mini muffins 1 ¾ cup plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 3 tsp cocoa ¾ cup caster sugar 1 ½ cups milk chocolate chips 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla essence 1/3 cup vegetable oil

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180c and line 2 x mini muffin trays with cake cases 2. Si the flour, baking powder, cocoa and sugar into a bowl then mix in 1 cup of the chocolate chips. 3. Whisk the egg, oil, vanilla, and milk in a cup 4. Mix all the ingredients together, gently folding the dry ingredients. 5. Fill each cake case approximately 2/3 full with around a tablespoon of mixture. 6. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips over the top of the muffins and bake for around 20 mins unl risen.

Easy raspberry ice cream INGREDIENTS for 8 servings 200g fresh raspberries 50g caster sugar juice of 1 lemon 397g tin condensed milk 600ml double cream 200g frozen raspberries a few handfuls of chocolate chunks (optional) 1.5 tsp. Baking powder ½ tsp. Baking soda Pinch of salt

Method: • Put the fresh raspberries in a pan with the caster sugar and lemon juice and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. • In a bowl put the condensed milk and double cream and whisk by hand until the mixture thickens and falls in ribbons off of the whisk. • Next remove the raspberry mixture from the heat and sieve to remove all the pips. This will leave you with a thick sauce. • Now put the condensed milk and cream into a 2L food box and slowly add the raspberry sauce bit by bit, stirring gently with a spatula to create a rippled effect. • Next crush the frozen raspberries into small pieces. Add the frozen raspberry pieces and chocolate chips to the cream, condensed milk and raspberry sauce. • Place in freezer for at least 3 hours.

Extra tasty served warm! You could make 12 larger muffins as an alternative version. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 25

The love of a Beer Garden There are few finer things in life than sitting in a pub garden, the sun beating down, sipping an ice-cold drink or two. People love beer gardens, they’re certainly a cheerful place, but not everyone gets it right. So this got us thinking about what exactly it is that takes a beer garden from good to great? It’s all about creating atmosphere… Seating is key The original beer gardens in Germany lined up rectangular picnic tables in long rows to seat as many people as possible. This resulted in squashed patrons and elbows in the face, although it certainly forced strangers to talk to each other. Nowadays people prefer the option of a little more privacy and like to socialise with their own group of friends around tables or in booths. Shade and Shelter It’s fair to say us Brits are totally at the mercy of our weather, a long-lazy day in the sunshine can often be rudely interrupted with the odd gush of wind or downpour. Plus with our pasty skins we need to be careful not to burn when the sun does eventually get his hat on so parasols or pegolas are a must! Space for all the family What’s better on a summers afternoon or evening to kick back with a drink in hand whilst the children are able to play safely insight. Many pubs understand this and offer a variety of outdoor play equipment for younger patrons. Beer Of course this one is key, make sure it’s flowing. The beer garden has become something of a British institution and those who get it right are the ones who have thought carefully about the type of environment they want to create for their customers. So make sure on the next sunny afternoon you seek out your local and see what they have to offer!

History of Afternoon Tea Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it is around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey and this summer practice proved so popular that the Duchess continued it when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for “tea and a walking the fields.” Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was

sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon. Occasionally you will see hotels serving a ‘high tea’. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve a ‘low’ or ‘afternoon’ tea around four o’clock, just before the fashionable promenade in Hyde Park. The middle and lower classes would have a more substantial ‘high’ tea later in the day, at five or six o’clock, in place of a late dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea being served at the dinner table. Many visitors from overseas still imagine that we are a nation where, in the words of the well-known song, ‘at half past three, everything stops for tea’. These days Afternoon Tea is usually only an occasional treat; a birthday celebration in a country house hotel, or a welcome break from a hectic days shopping ‘in town’.

Pub Grub

Us Brits’ love pub grub and according to new research from Mintel, sales of pub meals grew by an estimated 14% between 2012 and 2016 to reach £7.4 billion. In the same time period, sales of alcoholic drinks grew by 6%, while soft drink sales rose by 7%. The report reveals that it is increasingly likely that pub goers will be there for the food. In 2016, 23% of consumers said they had visited a pub in the past month because of the high quality of food on offer; while in 2017 this had risen to 30%. Currently, 69% of pub-goers say that one of the most important factors that would make them choose one pub over another is high-quality food, while one in six (16%) who visit pubs or bars to eat say they would go especially to try a new menu. Looking into the battle for the UK’s favourite pub dish, it’s steak that tops the menu. One in five (20%) Brits say that grilled steak is their favourite pub dish, narrowly pipping roast dinners (19%), burgers (15%) and fish and chips (14%) to the top spot. Falling flat, however, just 3% say beef wellington or sausage and mash is their best of the bar meals respectively. What’s more, giving a new meaning to ‘getting pie-eyed’ at the pub, 5% say pie is their favourite pub dish. While pub grub has not held the reputation of a fine dining destination in the past, today, Brits have high estimations of what they expect from public house cuisine. Almost half (45%) of pub-goers say that they would be put off ordering a particular dish at a pub or bar that wasn’t freshly made. It seems that pubs might be going back to their old-school ways with two in three (65%) pub-goers say they would like more pubs to have quiet areas free from music and TV. Meanwhile, many still value table service; 61% of pub-goers say that table service makes an evening more special, while 75% say it’s important for waiting staff to be able to explain the menu.

Home & property

Are you Obliged

to Fence Your Property? We are all accustomed to seeing fences around fields and around the gardens of individual houses. So it may come as a surprise to learn that there is no general obligation in law to fence the boundaries of one’s land. There are a number of circumstances where the law requires that fences are erected. These are usually related to safety and include: • alongside railways: Railways Consolidation Act 1845; • around disused mines: Mines and Quarries Act 1954; • around building sites adjacent to highways, both road and path: Highways Act 1980; • to prevent livestock from straying from their fields: Animals Act 1971. A conveyance deed or a transfer deed may include a covenant requiring the purchaser to fence the land and any successors in title to forever maintain the fence. Of course most of us like to fence our property to ensure the safety of children and pets. There are many questions surrounding fences, here we can hopefully answer most of the common ones for you:

How high a fence can I put on my boundary? The height of fences is a matter of planning policy. To find out what is allowed in your area contact the local authority planning office. As a general rule, fences in rear gardens are allowed to be up to 2 metres high.

Who owns which fence? Is it true that every house owns the fence on its left side, as you look at it from the street? There is no general rule about whether you own the fence on the left or the fence on the right of your property. The truth of the matter

is this: it is the vendor who breaks up the land into smaller parcels before selling each parcel individually who assigns responsibility for the boundaries of the new land parcels that he creates. Normally this will be identified in the conveyance deed (or the transfer deed) the boundaries for which the purchaser is responsible.

If the deeds are silent on the question of responsibility for the boundary then you may have to work on the basis of the information given in the Seller’s Property Information Form by the vendor at the time you bought your property. It is sometimes possible to infer who is responsible for a fence by establishing the pattern of fence ownership along the same side of the street.

What can I do about the unsightliness of my neighbour’s fence? Unless your neighbour agrees, you cannot:

• paint, stain or varnish your neighbour’s fence to make it a more attractive colour; • affix close boards or panels to your face of the fence in order to conceal the support rails; • attach trellis or some other system to support plants that you wish to grow up your side of your neighbour’s fence. What you can do is: • plant free standing shrubs or a hedge to conceal the fence from your view; • erect your own fence alongside your neighbour’s fence. Can I hang things on my neighbour’s fence? Can I use my neighbour’s fence as a support for my own plants? Can I paint my side of my neighbour’s fence?

Only if your neighbour gives you permission to do so. Leaning things against your neighbour’s fence, hanging things on your neighbour’s fence, even using your neighbour’s fence as a makeshift retaining wall, will place a much heavier burden on the fence panels and supporting posts than they were designed to bear. The consequences of such actions are easy enough to predict and you will be liable for the cost of any repairs. On top of that you will still have to do, and pay for, the work that you did incorrectly and which resulted in the damage to your neighbour’s fence.

In short, anything you do to your neighbour’s fence without your neighbour’s permission - including staining, painting or applying preservative to your side of your neighbour’s fence, amounts to criminal damage. 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

FAST FACTS

I

t is not unusual to see some big changes between an older and newer generation of the same model, but the all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV looks radically different to the outgoing one. That exiting generation, introduced in 2008, was a frumpy, chubby SUV that did little to inspire buyers. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV, though, is a different animal, burying the clumsy image of the last car six-feet under and achieving the European Car of the Year crown. Sometimes it can be difficult to separate SUVs out on the road because most of them drive alike. Many are set up for comfort, and that’s what the all-new 3008 is tuned for. The small steering wheel and light handling gives a feeling of sprightliness, even if that’s not the case, as it’s a tall, heavy car. However; that’s not a complaint, the designers and engineers have done a good job covering the traditional flaws of an SUV’s dynamics. There’s a wholesome medley of engines on offer, as with most Peugeot models: two petrol’s in the shape of a 131PS 1.2-litre unit and a 165PS 1.6-litre turbo. Then there are a couple of turbo diesel engines of 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre capacity. What suits you best is largely going to depend on what sort of driving you do. Short urban trips suit the 1.2-litre petrol more, whereas longer journeys will fit the potential 70mpg obtainable from the 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the 1.2 petrol in GT Line spec with 131PS, fitted with a manual gearbox. Behind the wheel, things feel dynamic, and the weighting of the steering is spot 32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

on. The car grips bitumen like a cat’s claws cling to flesh, and mid-range pulling power is good, so you can pick up the pace easily. The six-speed transmission is slick shifting, and the car delivers a hushed ride. Tyre roar and wind whistle is kept out of the cabin, too. All this just adds to the 3008’s sense of refinement. The Peugeot offers a composed ride with seats that provide the sort of comfort and support required for long distance motoring. Furthermore, the car’s suspension sops up potholes without complaining. Significantly, the all-new 3008 doesn’t tip into bends. Indeed, body roll is very well contained. This surprised me, as smaller SUVs aren’t always the type of vehicle to stay so unflustered on twisty tarmac. The new 3008 comes in four levels of trim: Active, Allure, GT Line and GT. Factory fitted safety kit includes automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. The GT Line hasn’t got any extra safety equipment - just sportier looks. But it has all the safety kit you really need, and as with all 3008s, it has a top five-star Euro NCAP safety score. A car can look great and have all the equipment in the world crammed into it – but it’s no good if it isn’t economical and it doesn’t drive decently. There are no concerns to be had in this area with the

Price: £25,655 3008 SUV. The 1.2 GT Line’s average fuel consumption of 55.4mpg and 117g/km of CO2 means low running costs, combined with effective performance. 0-62mph is achieved in 10.8 seconds and the Pug’s maximum speed is 117mph. The all-new Peugeot 3008 SUV’s entry price is £21,795, but expect to fork out £25,655 for the petrol-powered GT Line I drove. A basic Nissan Qashqai costs £18,545, and the new SEAT Ateca is priced from £17,990. But I think the 3008’s extra cost is justified because it feels more upmarket inside than these two rivals. Cabin materials include brushed chrome, large areas of carbon decoration and textiles. They even cover some areas less commonly found in SUVs, such as the dashboard inlay. It’s all very contemporary and attractive. The Peugeot is just as stylish outside, and it drives well, while delivering a comfortable ride for all.
