Welcome to the February issue
your LOCAL COMM
This year I didn’t make any resolutions as such but I have taken January as an opportunity to sort out my diet and start getting back into some sort of fitness regime. Before we got married I joined a slimming group and managed to lose almost 2 stone alongside getting more active. Two children later and I need to focus again on diet and fitness. So, we have cut down on red meat, alcohol as well as high sugar and fatty snacks. So far, so good but I will be ramping up the fitness over the coming weeks – wish me luck, I am not a natural gym bunny! January for us has been about having some quiet weekends after the busy weeks in the lead up to Christmas. That’s not to say we haven’t had lots of fun – painting, playing with toys from Christmas and lots of den building! Back to the issue and as it is February which is traditionally the month of love, we have given you inspiration for the most romantic destinations if you fancy whisking a loved one away for a surprise break. In our Home and Property Section we are looking at how to remodel a kitchen on a budget, and Tim is test driving an Aston Martin, we can all have a dream! Annette is talking about the question on every new mums list ‘when will I feel normal again’, so if you’ve had a baby recently or know someone who has, this is a must read for help and advice. This year is already flying by, we are looking to February and Spring is around the corner (hooray for longer days) but with little ones at home I wish time would slow down sometimes! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Spalding shop has licence revoked after illegal alcohol sales A Spalding shop found to be selling illegal alcohol has had its premises license revoked by South Holland District Council. Spalding Express, on Commercial Road, was in front of the Panel of the Licensing Committee after five visits throughout 2018 by Lincolnshire Police, trading standards and South Holland District Council Licensing Officers uncovered numerous breaches, including the sale of illegal foreign alcohol, selling below the mandatory price and at an ABV percentage beyond the maximum
permitted within their licence. Licence holder Mr Mohamed was present at the hearing on Thursday 10 January, where the SHDC panel ruled that the premises licence should be revoked, subject to appeal, following repeated breaches of the conditions of the licence and a lack of confidence in the Premises Licence Holder, as well as the presence of smuggled alcohol in the premises. Cllr Anthony Casson, portfolio holder for public protection supported the panel’s decision, saying: “The council’s public
protection team, working alongside Lincolnshire Police and Trading Standard officers, work hard every day to ensure that the people of South Holland are kept safe from harm”. “I am pleased that the strongest action available to us has been taken to revoke the alcohol licence of this premises, who have a sustained a clear history of not adhering to the licensing laws or ensuring the protection or wellbeing of their customers”. “As always I also hope this decision

will send out a clear message to other business owners in the district that we take behaviour like this extremely seriously and will take action against any premises seen to be in breach of the licensing objectives.” The ban on alcohol sales at the premises will come into effect after 21 days, depending on whether an appeal is lodged with the Magistrates Court. Record number of gifts donated at Springfields Outlet An initiative by Springfields Outlet in conjunction with Heart FM, has seen an extraordinary 4,702 gifts being donated to this year’s Heart FM ‘Giving Tree’, based within the M&S Outlet at the centre. The ‘Giving Tree’ makes the Christmas season special by helping to ensure that as many children and young people as possible have a present to open on Christmas Day. Springfields shoppers are encouraged to choose a tag from the Giving Tree, with a child’s name and age. Then buy a gift for that child and leave it in a box next to the Giving Tree. The Christmas gifts donated are passed to children and young people through a variety of charities, including Anna’s Hope – the leading children’s brain tumour charity in the East or England, Teenage Cancer Trust and Barnardo’s Services. The final collection of gifts for Christmas was made at 7.15am today (Friday 21 December). The amazing generosity shown by Springfields customers this year, means that the grand total sees a 48% increase on the number of gifts donated last Christmas. Kev Lawrence, Heart Breakfast presenter said: “We’d like to say a huge thanks to our incredibly generous listeners for donating so many gifts this year. It means that thousands of children and young people who might have woken up to no presents under the tree will have something to open on Christmas Day.” Simon Stone, Retail Director of Springfields Outlet added: “We’ve supported the Heart FM Giving Tree initiative for a number of years now and we are really proud to be associated with it. A big ‘thank you’ goes to the M&S Outlet store team who hosted the tree for us this year, fully supporting this heart-warming cause. Their enthusiasm really assisted this year’s extraordinary result.’’ The deadline for donations has now passed and anyone wishing to donate is encouraged to contact a charity directly.

£1.1 million Government funding for affordable homes in Weston South Holland District Council has been allocated £1.1m in funding from Homes England to help deliver 34 affordable homes at Small Drove in Weston. The money, which was applied for in October 2018, will be used to help build a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom houses and bungalows on a site where currently 10 prefabricated homes sit. South Holland District Council is committed to providing the best quality homes for residents. Small Drove in Weston is earmarked because the current site has prefabricated bungalows which are coming towards the end of their lifespan. The existing homes make poor use of the land, and the proposals under consideration make better use of the site by increasing the number of new

starter homes as well as larger houses for families. The money from Homes England will fund part of the overall project, with the bulk of the money coming from South Holland District Council’s own reserves. SHDC carried out an open tender to identify a preferred contractor to build the homes. A preferred partner has been identified and the contract will be signed should approval from members be given at full council this month. Councillor Colin Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Corporate Delivery and Strategic Oversight, welcomed the news and believes the site at Weston will provide good-quality homes for residents in the district. “This is extremely good news for not
only Weston but the district as a whole. We are now partners with Homes England and look forward to seeking further funding opportunities in the future. “This latest round of funding from Homes England forms part of a wider strategy to build more homes such as those being delivered at Long Sutton and Spalding.” Councillor Christine Lawton, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Health, added: “As a district council, we are committed to delivering good-quality homes for all. “The council has been working with the nearby school which welcomes the proposals. The new homes will improve the existing space and provide Weston, and the district, with attractive affordable homes fit for the future.”

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
S
outh Holland District Council have recently awarded a new five year leisure contract to Parkwood Leisure to run the Castle Sports Centre, Swimming Pool and Peele Leisure Centre along with increased outreach work. Parkwood Leisure are a National Company who run over 80 facilities across the Uk, so have substantial experience in the field. The new contract makes substantial savings for the council and is intended to increase participation through a range of activities. The new contract starts on March1st. Work is gathering pace on Spalding’s Western Relief Road and it is anticipated that planning applications will be submitted to the County Council for highway infrastructure, (roads and bridges) for the North section (near Enterprise Way) and the South sections (Spalding Common) of the route to be determined in the summer and public consultations on the whole route will commence in early spring, so watch out in the local
press for details in the next few weeks. If all goes well there could be a spade in the ground before winter! There was good news for Holbeach’s Food Enterprise Zone that was awarded £50,000 as part of a larger package from the government to fund Manufacturing Zones in the East Midlands and in our case the money, applied for by the Local Enterprise Partnership, will go towards utilities and road access design to allow the site to expand to its full potential. Grants 4 Growth continues to benefit businesses across the County who are keen to grow their business. Even with all the uncertainties of Brexit, it is encouraging to see our local businesses not just surviving, but thriving. With three months to go there is just £143,000 left to allocate to around 16 businesses. At the end of the programme we will have allocated £1,352,000 that will have benefitted 170 small to medium sized businesses. It is forecast to employ an

additional 200 plus jobs and attracted over £4m of private investment. Good news indeed for both Lincolnshire and South Holland. Finally, February can be a bit of a depressing month weather wise, dark and cold, so if you have a chance why not do what I do several days a week and take a trip to Lincoln and visit The Collection (Museum) at the bottom of Steep Hill. There is some great family entertainment, firstly to celebrate 50 years since the first man walked on the moon, with the Museum of the Moon. This is a touring artwork that features a moon that is six metres in diameter with full details of the lunar surface – 2.5 million people have seen the touring exhibit worldwide, so now is your chance! The exhibit runs from 2nd March to 28th April. Also for children in particular is the scarily real Dinosaur Encounter, including a full size and very noisy T-Rex ! That exhibition put on by London’s Natural History Museum will follow on from the Museum of the Moon. Enjoy!

Advice
Get an advance payment of Universal Credit You can ask for an advance payment of Universal Credit to help you get by while you’re waiting for your first payment. You can also ask for an advance payment if your circumstances have changed and you expect your Universal Credit payments to increase. Without an advance payment you won’t get any money until at least 5 weeks after you apply for Universal Credit. You should ask for an advance payment if you don’t think you’ll have enough money to live on between when you apply and when you get your first payment. The advance payment is a loan - you’ll have to pay it back, but you won’t need to pay any interest. You can ask for an advance payment by: •asking your work coach at your first Universal Credit interview •applying through your online account •calling the Universal Credit helpline Calls to these numbers are free. It’s best to call from the phone number you gave the DWP when you set up your Universal Credit account. You’ll have a shorter wait and be put through to the same person who handled previous calls you’ve made. You can borrow up to a month of your Universal Credit entitlement. The DWP will tell you if you can get an advance payment - you’ll usually find out on the same day you ask for it.
Universal Credit helpline (full service) Telephone: 0800 328 5644 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm
Once the DWP have agreed to an advance payment you should get the money in 3 working days. Tell the DWP if you need it sooner than this - they can pay you on the same day if you’d have no other money to live on. The DWP will pay the advance into the same bank account you’re using for your Universal Credit claim. If you borrow a whole month’s payment make sure you keep some back to pay your rent. Rent is included in your Universal Credit payment - it isn’t usually paid straight to your landlord. If you’ve already had your interview You can phone the Universal Credit helpline to ask for an advance payment or apply through your online account. You can ask up to 1 month minus 3 working days after you apply for Universal Credit. The time limit is different if you claim Universal Credit within a month of coming off other means-tested benefits or tax credits. DWP guidance says they can ask for an advance payment at any time during their first assessment period. Repaying the advance payment The DWP will automatically take repayments from your Universal Credit until you’ve paid the advance back. They’ll tell you how much the repayments will be and how long it will take for you to pay the advance back. You can spend up to 12 months paying an

advance back. The DWP shouldn’t ask you to pay it back sooner than this if you can’t afford it - tell your work coach if the repayments will cause you hardship. You can ask to pay it back quicker if you want to. If you’re refused an advance payment You can ask the DWP to look at the decision again if they won’t give you an advance payment. It will help if you can give new evidence or show that your circumstances have changed since your first request. If you’re behind with your rent Get advice on dealing with your rent arrears as quickly as possible - if you owe a lot of money, your landlord could try to evict you. If you’re 2 months or more behind on your rent, your landlord can ask for some of your Universal Credit to be paid directly to them. This will help you pay off the debt. You’ll need to keep making your usual rent payments as well. If these cuts in your payment mean you can’t afford day-to-day items like food or bills, call the Universal Credit helpline. They might be able to give your landlord less money for rent arrears. You should tell the helpline what bills you have and how much they cost - include food bills and rent too.

Boston College, Spalding Campus
The development of the playground for Reception/Year 1 Class continues; they now have soil in the new growing bed ready for planting flowers and vegetables and sand in the new picnic table sand pit. Together with their new Tepee/wigwam and the mud kitchen there will be lots for the children to explore outside this year. During this term, Act II will be in each week rehearsing with every class for our school performance on 6th and 7th February. This year we are performing an 80’s rock musical called ‘All For 1,2,3,4’ which is based around the Three Musketeers story. This will be a real treat and not to be missed. We hope to see many parents/ carers at events this term including: • an NSPCC workshop on how to
keep children safe online • an information session on the Legacy challenge and how to support your children at home completing this • parents evenings Clubs this term include: Choir, Ocarina, Football, Netball, Yoga all of which are free and Taiko with Act II. Children in Year 4/5 will be swimming every Friday this term. Boston United are also coming in for Football in Key Stage 2 for six weeks during this term. The NHS will be coming into school in February for their annual “heights & weights” check for children in Reception and Year 6. We are taking part in several Agilitas competitions this term including Netball, Hockey, Golf and a KS2 Dance Showcase.

Staff and learners at Boston College’s Spalding Campus celebrated reaching its milestone 10,000th learner this week. The lucky 10,000th learner, Chelsea Leggatt, who is currently studying Access to Policing and Criminal Justice Studies at the College, received a voucher and certificate as part of a presentation held for the learners, staff and tenants. The College’s Spalding Campus is in its 8th year of providing quality education, and is continuously reviewing the needs of learners with dedication to provide them with the skills and qualifications needed for a successful future. The number of learners undertaking and achieving new qualifications at the Spalding Campus has risen each year, with more adults, school leavers and

After having her son, Chelsea decided she needed to provide her family the best opportunity she could, so after some deliberation and encouragement from staff at the College, she decided to take a leap of faith and enrol on the Access to Higher Education course. Despite being a busy mum,

The Cranmer Awards are an annual competition run by the Prayer Book Society to introduce young people to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer - the bedrock of the Anglican Church and among the finest writing to be found anywhere. Entrants from across the country read or recite a passage of their choice, 3-5 minutes in duration, from the Book of Common Prayer. “I am delighted that all four girls took the opportunity to compete, and I was impressed by their commitment to rehearse and prepare for the awards. It will be the third consecutive year that WGS will have a National finalist at this prestigious public speaking event.” Mrs Duncan, Head of Drama.

he first few weeks after a baby arrives is certainly hard work – sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, aches and pains to name but a few, but when is life supposed to return to normal? When is it normal to feel normal? That’s a story that could fill this whole magazine not just a column! Truly, it’s different for everyone – and if we break up ‘normal’ into emotional and physical it gets even more diverse. Physically back to normal depends on the kind of birth you have had. Generally a csection takes longer to heal from than a vaginal birth, but not always, and a vaginal birth with stitches generally takes longer than not having any. That said, there are women who have lots of stitches who are pain free after a week, and those who’ve had none that are still struggling with bruising, swelling or pain months after. Your health before you were pregnant and your iron levels also make a difference. Even if you are physically healing after a few months, your emotional state is something altogether different! Postnatally, women are very vulnerable. Hormones change your perspective on things to focus your priority on your baby. However, in a modern world we are not well placed to be able to do that. We have many things going on at once – relationships, family, work, friends etc. We want to be included in the world that existed before we had a baby and feeling unable to rejoin that world because of the logistics of having a small person can make us feel like we have lost our place in the world.
For many women, feeling disconnected can cause anxiety and depression. For others, hiding away at home (or conversely trying to do too much) is the result. As with most things, finding your ‘people’ while you’re pregnant is helpful in making the transition easier. However, from personal experience, the friends and the offers of support that come before baby is born are not always translated postnatally. Visits and meals never materialise and once the ‘newborn’ stage is over, the offers decrease further. It is arguably after the 4th trimester (the first 12 weeks after baby is born) that the most support is needed because while the physicalities of healing and looking after a baby are easier (probably!) the emotional, hormonal, raw vulnerableness of it all is still in full swing. We don’t feel confident, our bodies are different shapes to what they were before, we second guess what other people mean when they say things to us, we take things to heart more than normal; in short…we are a mess! The hormones don’t help with our minds playing tricks on us, but unlike any other times of our life, we generally keep things to ourselves as we don’t want to be seen to be ‘failing’ at this motherhood thing It’s a tough place having a small baby, but sometimes not as tough as being inside your own head.

How to deal with problem debt after separation You may have debts with your ex-partner, or you may owe money in your own name. Money is likely to be tight while you sort out your finances after you separate, but don’t ignore debt problems. The sooner you deal with them, the easier it will be. Working out which debts to pay first If you don’t have enough money to keep up payments on your loans, credit cards, bills and mortgage or rent, it’s important to prioritise which you can pay. The debts that you should pay first include your rent or mortgage, rates or council tax arrears and gas and electricity bills. The reason you should pay these so-called ‘priority’ debts first is that if you don’t, the consequences could be serious. You could be taken to court or lose your home. Joint debts – what should you do? With any joint debts you have, such as a joint bank loan, overdraft or mortgage, you are each liable to repay the whole amount. That means if your ex-partner doesn’t want to pay their share, the bank or building society may ask you to make all the payments. Contact them to tell them you’ve split up and see if you can: • Put some restrictions on the account so your ex can’t run up further debts; or
• Reach an agreement so they accept lower payments if you can’t repay in full Making an arrangement with your ex-partner If you have a joint loan or mortgage with your ex-partner and the bank won’t let you separate the loan, you should try and agree with him or her how you will repay it. Because both of you are liable to pay off any joint loans you have, it could affect both your credit ratings and your ability to borrow in the future if one or both of you doesn’t keep up the payments. You may want to: • Agree with your ex-partner that you will continue to make payments from a joint account • Sort out an arrangement so one of you agrees to pay the bank or loan company but receives a contribution from the other. If you go for this option, try and agree to set up a standing order for the payments to or from your ex-partner. That way you know they’ll be made regularly • Pay off your joint loan and take out another one in one of your
16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
names. This is only likely to work for you if the partner taking out the loan in their name has a good credit rating and can afford to make the repayments There’s more information about credit rating in How your credit score affects the cost of borrowing. What to do if your ex-partner won’t co-operate Sometimes, couples who are splitting up make arrangements for their finances with the best of intentions, but they just don’t last. It could be because you or your ex-partner’s financial position changes (maybe one of you loses your job), or because your break-up becomes much more acrimonious. How to sort out your finances on divorce or dissolution When you begin the process of divorce or dissolving your civil partnership, you might be wondering how much you’ll be able to sort out on your own – and whether you need a solicitor. This will depend on several things, including how easy you and your ex-partner find it to discuss financial issues.
Working out how much professional help you need When working out how much help you need, there are several options: 1. You can arrange everything on your own or use an online service. 2. You can arrange for one or two advice sessions with a solicitor, but sort out the form filling and paperwork yourself. 3. You can use a mediator – an impartial third party – to help you and your ex-partner (husband, wife or civil partner) to reach an agreement. 4. You can use a solicitor to help you throughout the whole process. If you have lots of face-to-face meetings and phone calls, and especially if it takes many months for you to agree, sorting out your financial settlement could get very expensive. If you can, try to avoid arguing with your expartner through your solicitor Signs that separating your finances may be complicated If your financial position is complicated, separating your finances and reaching an agreement could take some time and you are likely to need professional help. See if any of these apply to you. The more that you tick, the more likely it is that separating could be complicated. • One (or both) of you owns a business. • One of you depends financially on the other. • One of you does not agree to the divorce or dissolution. • You have children who still financially depend on you. • You have been married or in a civil partnership for more than five years. • One of you has a medical problem or disability that affects your ability to earn an income. • One of you has given up work to bring up your children, which affects your ability to earn an income. • One of you has more assets than the other (for example, the house is in one person’s name, or one of you has built up a much bigger pension than the other). For more advice please visit www. moneyadviceservice.org.uk or speak to a legal professional specialising in separation and divorce.

Village
Tails By Jo Wright Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding area with a well-loved Labrador.
I
Im a Labrador looking around somewhere a little larger this month – I’m a Holbeach hound! This village-dwelling country gentledog is exploring a small town from top to tail. I’m a keen-eyed canine strolling down the side roads and hiking along the High Street. With the winter sun on my fur, I see new and second paw (hand) shops. I pootle past big stores and little treasure trove shops. From a sparkly bracelet to a screwdriver, flowers to showers. You can get everything you need in Holbeach. Hardware, garden slabs, gravel and food for Labs! I see smart charity shops in this small town with a big heart. Clothes with kindness - I like that. I know my little humans have spent many happy hours in the
park here, and they would always round off their visit with a Laddies ice cream – whatever the season! ‘Quack quack!’ Is my human making strange noises at me? Not
quite - it’s the ducks at the nature reserve! I love my feathery friends, but I hope they’re not planning on pecking at my dog snacks. I’m not sharing chaps! I’m clearly in a place proud of its heritage. I see a colourful mosaic featuring local folk who have made their mark, and smart black benches around the churchyard proudly bearing the names and achievements of Holbeach people from the past. I pull my human along. ‘Come on! Let’s go! Why have you stopped?’ I turn around to see she’s looking in the health food shop window. ‘New Year, new you?’ I venture. She scowls a little. ‘I feel we both over-indulged at Christmas, Otis,’ she says. ‘I’ll help you walk off the weight,’ I pant. ‘That’s very kind of you doggo,’ she smiles kindly, ‘but why have you just stopped outside a fish and chip shop?’ Ah. Good point.

Whisked Away
with Love
With Valentines Day this month, that better time to plan a romantic getaway and surprise your other half? Europe is commonly considered to be home to some of the world’s most romantic cities – from Paris to Prague, there’s something for every hopeless romantic. So where are the most romantic cities in Europe? Here’s our top picks for you to choose from! If your budget doesn’t stretch to a trip away why not theme an evening around a city? A French, Spanish or Italian inspired meal with candles and romance will go a long way without leaving home!
Amsterdam No city in Europe quite compares to the romance exuding from the Dutch capital. For the most romantic experience, be sure to rent a house boat and soak up the authenticity from the canals themselves.
Amsterdam
Copenhagen
Paris No list like this would be complete without the city of love itself. Second only to Amsterdam (a more quaint, charming, personal city of romance), Paris is still one of the unbeatable cities to visit with your significant other. Be sure to pop a bottle o’ champagne under the Eiffel tower and indulge in some French cheese – bliss! Prague Prague has quickly become one of Europe’s most discovered cities – hustling and bustling with tourists from around the globe. But it still comes in as one of our top three cities of romance for it’s inevitable charm. The architecture alone will have you feeling loved up. Visit in winter for a less-crowded experience and enjoy the muddled wine and Christmas charm. Budapest Budapest remains to be one of Europe’s most underrated cities, but did you know it is also one of the most romantic? Head to Budapest before the crowds impact any further – it is swiftly becoming a new European favourite.
Paris 20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
Vienna The Austrian capital is bursting with charm at every turn. Think imperial architecture, horse carriages, nights at the opera and day trips to royal residences.
Venice No list encapsulating romance in Europe would be complete without mention of the city of Venice. Although nowadays overrun by mass tourism, the city is still a favourite for loved up couples – and it’s not hard to see why. Ljubljana The Slovenian capital doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it deserves. Often overlooked in favour of nearby Bled (which is indeed stunning), Ljubljana has an out-of-this-world charm that makes it one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe. Florence Florence (or Firenze) is one of Italy’s most loved cities. With the tuscan sun, melting gelato and your loved one by your side – you can ‘t go wrong. The only drama you’ll have in Florence is trying not to cheat on your partner and fall in love with the city itself. Or the food… oh the food! Zurich Often mistaken for being the Swiss capital (a title which instead goes to Bern), Zurich is perhaps the most loved city in all of Switzerland. Of course, it depends who you ask. But you’d be kidding yourself not to reference Zurich as the most romantic Swiss city! Copenhagen Cozying up by the outdoor fire and enjoy a muddled wine or rich hot chocolate sound like heaven to you? Head to Copenhagen, one of Northern Europe’s most romantic cities.

A Pain in the Heel Your feet take the whole weight of your body, so it’s important to take good care of them. The College of Podiatry shares their advice for one of the commonest issues regarding the feet – heel pain!
What is heel pain? The heel is a specialised part of the body designed to absorb the impact of your body weight when walking, running or undertaking any other form of physical exertion or weight-bearing exercise. When pain does develop, it can be very disabling, making every step a problem, which in turn affects your overall posture. What causes the problem? Heel pain is a common occurrence and in most cases the pain is caused by some form of mechanical injury caused by small repetitive injuries that occur at a rate faster than the body can heal them. Heel pain can also be caused by lower back problems or inflammatory joint conditions. The following types of heel pain are not exhaustive but may help you appreciate the complexity of heel pain and why specialist advice can be helpful. Plantar fasciitis (or fasciopathy): This is the most common caused by damage to the fascia ‘band’ (similar to a ligament) which connects the heel bone to the base of the toes. This condition can be caused in various ways including extensive running,
walking or standing for long periods of time, especially when you have a sedentary lifestyle. In particular, a change of surface (e.g. road to track), poor shoe support, being overweight, overuse or sudden stretching of your sole, as well as a tight Achilles tendon, can lead to this condition. Heel bursitis (subcalcaneal bursitis): This is an inflammation of a bursa (a fluid-filled fibrous sac) under the heel bone where the pain is typically more in the centre of the heel than that experienced with plantar fasciitis and significantly worsens during the day. This condition can be caused following a fall from a height on to the heel. Heel bumps: These are firm bumps on the back of the heel, usually caused by excessive shoe rubbing in the heel area, or the thickening of the tissues associated with a tight Achilles tendon. Heel bumps: These are firm bumps on the back of the heel, usually caused by excessive shoe rubbing in the heel area, or the thickening of the tissues
associated with a tight Achilles tendon. Tarsal tunnel syndrome: This can feel like a burning or tingling sensation under the heel within the arch of the foot with occasional loss of sensation on the bottom of the foot. This is caused by compression of the tibial nerve as it passes the inside of the ankle. Tapping of the nerve just behind the ankle bone (known as Tinel’s test) will stimulate the symptoms of the condition. Chronic inflammation of the heel pad: This is caused by a heavy heel strike or sometimes a reduction in the thickness of the heel pad which can give rise to a dull ache in the heel which increases during the day. Fracture: Often caused following injuries such as falling from a height or landing on an uneven surface. Sever’s disease (calcaneal apophysitis): This painful condition affects young children, usually between the ages of 8 and 12, especially those who are physically active or undergoing a growth spurt. It results from inflammation of the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the heel. Achilles tendonosis: This condition occurs when the Achilles tendon is placed under more pressure than it can cope with and small tears develop along with inflammation and in some cases can lead to tendon rupture. These tears become a source of further injury, which can lead to swelling within the tendon, hence the name ‘tendonosis’ (sometimes referred to in error as ‘tendonitis’). Who gets it? Heel pain can affect everyone,
22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
whatever your age, but those more commonly affected include those in middle age (over 40s age group), those who are overweight or stand for long periods of time, as well as athletes. How do I know I have it? With plantar fasciitis, there are often no visible features on the heel but deep localised painful spots found in or around the middle of the sole of the heel, and pain is usually worse on standing after long periods of rest, particularly first thing in the morning. With bursitis, pain can be felt at the back of the heel when the ankle joint is moved and there may be a swelling on both sides of the Achilles tendon. Or you may feel pain deep inside the heel when it makes contact with the ground. Is it serious? Heel pain is a common condition and in most cases will diminish following some routine self-care measures. If the pain persists longer than three weeks, it is best to seek professional advice from a podiatrist, as there are many types of heel pain, each with their own different causes and separate forms of treatment. What are the treatments? If you experience heel pain, some simple self-care measures include: • Avoid wearing ill-fitting or uncomfortable shoes • Wear shoes with good heel cushioning and effective arch support • Minimise walking or exercising on hard ground • Rest regularly and try not to walk or run too fast • Wear a raised heel (no more than 6-10 mm higher than normal) • Lose weight if you are overweight For more advice on this and other issues please speak to a specialist or visit The Royal College of Podiatry at www.cop.org.uk

here is a lot going on in Crowland! Of course there are the town’s two main historical points of interest which are the ruined medieval Crowland Abbey and the 14th-century three-sided bridge, Trinity Bridge, which stands at its central point and used to be the confluence of three streams. However, there is a wide selection of shops and services in the town including café, garden centre, hairdressers, convenience stores, restaurants, public houses and much more. A thriving market town, Crowland supports a population of approximately 4,200 with the majority of the residents living within the town itself. The town is a pleasant mix of older properties surrounding the Trinity Bridge and Croyland Abbey and several large modern housing estates on the edges which overlook the rural landscape. A feature of the town is the many greens in the centre of the streets radiating out from the Trinity Bridge. Next time you are driving past, why not pop in and see what is on offer! Note the difference in spelling; the town is ‘Crowland’ and the abbey is ‘Croyland’. This difference is probably down to a spelling mistake made by a medieval monk, but the mistake has stuck! The abbey was founded in the 8th century, and much of the superb medieval west front remains standing. The abbey grew up on an island site in the marshy fenland, around the location of a hermit cell established by a monk named Guthlac. Over time the surrounding fens were drained and a settlement grew up around the abbey, forming the town of Crowland. The monks of Croyland maintained an historical record of events, spanning the years 655-1486. The record is known as the Croyland Chronicle and forms a valuable
24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
resource for historians. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in the Reformation, and most of the monastic buildings were torn down, but the nave and two side aisles were kept intact to serve as the parish church of Crowland. Look for the carvings over the west doorway, depicting scenes from the life of Guthlac, and a gilded roof boss in the shape of a pagan ‘Green Man’.
Trinity Bridge
Aside from the church, there is another major historic site in Crowland; the 14th century Trinity Bridge. The peculiar threesided bridge was built at the confluence of
the rivers Welland and Witham, but the rivers have since changed course leaving the bridge high and dry. The first record of a bridge here comes from AD 716, but the current stone bridge was built between 1360-1390 of stone from the quarries at Barnack. Three stairways meet at the top of the bridge. On one stair is a carved figure thought to be a depiction of King Ethelbald, brought here from the west front of the nearby abbey.

Shop Local and Support Your Town Choosing to shop with your local businesses instead of the larger chain stores has many benefits, some of which we are sure will surprise you - from how this decision can help improve the economy and environment to how it can also help to increase tourism and local jobs. The local economy Local businesses are the backbone of our economy, the epitome of the UK high street and often large tourist attractions. But what you may not know is that shopping at a local business, rather than a large chain, is actually better for the economy of your community. To ensure a strong and sustainable local economy foundation people need to buy locally. Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent shop means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. This is simply because the nearby shop owners, who you are spending your money with, will then put that money back into your local community by going into local pubs and restaurants etc, thus circulating the money and allowing your community to thrive. Online isn’t always best For many of us, we believe that the absolute best deals can only be found online. Through TV adverts,
radio adverts and online adverts we are constantly shown great deals that seem too good to be true, and often this is sadly the case. However, you might be surprised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops and businesses. Customer service and shopping experience The fantastic thing about independent businesses is that they are run by people, not by boards, stockholders or algorithms. Although many chain businesses do have good customer service, you can’t beat the personal touch of a local owner who knows everyone in the neighbourhood. They can offer you a product that is suitable for you, your house and even your area. Building relationships between the local owner and the local customer goes further than just a purchase. It is also worth remembering that local shops stock an inventory based on their own customer’s choices rather than
national fashion trends. This is so you can find what you want rather than finding what they want to sell you. Healthier environment This one might surprise you, but choosing a local company over a chain can actually have a positive impact on the environment. This is because the majority of local companies are found on the high street and are within walking distance, rather than a drive away to the nearest large shopping centre. If more people chose to pop to the local high street rather than driving to the superstores, this would considerably reduce air pollution, reduce traffic and improve the quality of the nation’s high streets. Originality and individuality In a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by chain stores, which have been designed to look the same, independent businesses bring much-needed originality and variety into communities. They can be a real breath of fresh air into an area populated by generic stores and companies. The British entrepreneurs Through supporting your local businesses, you are actually helping to support local entrepreneurs who once may not have had a chance of getting their company started. Through more people choosing the smaller, local option over the larger chain businesses it is allowing more entrepreneurs to get their foot in the door, thus making for a very healthy economy. Help to create the identity Some local businesses will actually help shape the identity of the area. A high street filled with unique, vibrant
26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
and colourful shops will attract more tourism and help to make the community a more popular and financially healthier area in which to live and work. Local business for local charities Buying locally means that you are actually supporting your own community in more ways than you think. This is because many local businesses support local charities that are particularly relevant to that area, and by shopping locally you are helping to increase the number of local donations. Of course, large chain companies do support charities, and there is no right or wrong one to support, but if you would prefer to help support a local one then buying locally is a great way of doing this. Healthy competition The reason local companies have such great and competitive prices is purely thanks to healthy competition. This, of course, goes for all types of companies. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the most reliable way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. If things go wrong It’s important to know that if anything was to go wrong you have a local company to go to, someone to talk face to face with. Large commercial companies will often provide you with a phone number for their customer service team, which is often not in the UK, and make you wait for what seems like an eternity until you get to speak to someone. This simply is not the case with a local business. They will often prefer to meet up face to face, rather than on the phone, and find out exactly how they can help fix the problem.

Over the years this was passed down to George’s son, Thomas Reynold Howarth, who took the business down the commercial and domestic route. In 1961 Thomas’s Son Kevin joined the business and worked alongside his father until 1987 when he retired. In 2011 Kevin’s Son Ben Howarth, carried on the family trade and was joined by his brother Joss in 2017. The two brothers like there great grandfather before them carry on the family business and aim to serve their local community.

Aston Martin Vantage PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Power à Handling à Comfort à Storage space
4 4 4 4 8
FAST FACTS
(Aston Martin Vantage as tested)
T
he new Aston Martin Vantage is the stuff of dreams for those who love luxury sports cars. As a lad, I never thought I’d get to sit in an Aston, let alone end up being invited to test-drive one. But life sometimes has a way of working out if you’re prepared to put the graft in. I’m not necessarily talking about me; it’s Aston Martin who should be patting its own back. The company has worked like a dog to get the new Vantage right – and it’s paid off. Why? Well, let’s begin with the looks. It’s awesome from the rear, with detailed lights and a rising rear spoiler. It’s a little
less lively at the front, although the Vantage’s shark-nose is aggressively appealing. What really works, though, are the perfect proportions. The twoseater is sinuous – almost hunterlike in the way it appears poised to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Under the metal, the up-todate Vantage is like its sibling, the elegant DB11. Both models house the Mercedes-Benzsourced 4.0-litre V8 lump. Mind you; the twin-turbo assisted engine has been tuned so that it feels like it’s always belonged in Aston Martins. Stomp your foot on the accelerator and the car will shoot you from zero to 62mph in 3.6 seconds. It will then propel
you to 195mph - if you’re in a place you can do that without losing your licence, or your life. Open the Aston up, and you’re greeted with low-slung sports seats, but they’re easy to get comfortable in. Behind the wheel, the Vantage is cosseting, and the overall cabin is far less clinical than a Porsche 911’s. It’s traditional, yet it’s still thrilling. What’s more, the Benz-derived switchgear is nicely incorporated, and the controls are intuitive to use. As you might expect, the sports car isn’t meant to be the most practical vehicle – there’s not even a glovebox. And, as hinted at earlier, this is a motor without back seats, but you can just about get some golf clubs under the tailgate. Practicality aside, the new Vantage is as close to perfect as you can get. Pushing the Aston Martin-badged starter button brings the car to life with a roar. It’s a fulfilling sound, particularly with the four-pipe sports exhaust attached. Driving off in Sport (the most relaxed of the three settings) and letting the eightspeed automatic gearbox do its thing, discloses a smooth change that’s matched to a remarkably
à Max speed: 195 mph à 0-62 mph: 3.6 secs à Combined mpg: 26.9 à Engine layout: 3,982cc 8-cylinder turbo petrol à Max. power (PS): 510 à CO2: 245 g/km
Price: £120,900 biddable ride. Spool through Sport+ and Track settings, and the powertrain, damping and steering progressively alter the new Vantage’s temperament to make it angrier, wilder and noisier. Whichever mode you opt for, fun is always on the menu. On British tarmac, the Aston delivers confidence-inducing handling with immediate reactions - and the brakes do a top job of erasing pace. I drove the Vantage around the meandering highways and byways of the Cotswolds, and it excelled. This state-of-the-art Aston Martin Vantage is the first to be spawned under the automaker’s fresh leadership line-up – and you can tell. Yes, a 911 will give you better practicality, but the rival Porsche won’t quite give you the feeling you get from driving a legendary British model.
