to the February issue Here we are, we have broken what always feels to be the longest month of the year! The first signs of Spring are starting to pop up in the garden, thanks to the mild winter we have had and at home we are planning our adventures for 2020. We have agreed that we won’t be having any ‘big’ holidays this year as we need to spend time at home doing some DIY jobs and also enjoy what we have – we always seem to take time off work and be away, sometimes it’s nice to just be at home but without any pressure of what to do. We are hoping for some nice weather and a couple of camping breaks but I am most definitely a fair weather camper so will be booking those last minute! In this issue we look at how to surprise your loved ones this valentines, how to treat your feet well and how to update your kitchen on a budget. After the recent announcement that it looks like we are to lose two prominent shops in the town, we also discuss the importance of shopping local and supporting independent shops. And finally find out how Otis gets on when he goes in hunt of the Queen in Norfolk! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

If you have news to share with the residents of South Holland then please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk Speak up and help improve health and social care services in Lincolnshire Healthwatch Lincolnshire is calling on more people to share their views about health and social care as part of their campaign #SpeakUp2020. Last year more than 2000 people spoke directly to Healthwatch Lincolnshire about their experiences of health and care services. This feedback has been used to identify the most important issues in Lincolnshire. Healthwatch is currently working on areas such as Stroke and Personal Health Budgets as well as listening to

communities that don’t typically speak out. We want to hear more from patients and service users who are experiencing long waiting times for specialist appointments, those accessing social care and home care as well as your regular visits to GP’s, Pharmacies, Dentists and hospital services. To find out more, Healthwatch Lincolnshire has today launched #SpeakUp2020, a campaign calling on people to share the changes they want

to see to their local health and care services. By taking five minutes to speak up, people in Lincolnshire can improve care for themselves, their loved ones, and their community. People can share the changes they want to see by getting in touch with Healthwatch Lincolnshire by phoning 01205 820 892, emailing info@ healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk or by completing our online form at www.healthwatchlincolnshire. co.uk/have-your-say

Support rescue dogs by training your own! Jerry Green Dog Rescue is encouraging you to add training your dog to your list of New Year’s resolutions. January has been National Train Your Dog Month which raises awareness about the importance of proper training and healthy socialisation to a dog’s well-being. The month of January was chosen as many people receive puppies and dogs over the Christmas period and sadly many of them find themselves in rescues soon after. Shelley Wilks, the charities Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Training can make or break a dog’s chance to stay in a new home. Behaviour like constant barking and being destructive are just

some of the issues new owners can struggle to control and manage and this ultimately can affect the bond between dog and owner. But we believe that with the right training and persistence, these behavioural issues can be resolved and a happy home life will soon follow. Not only does proper training and socialisation help your dog to become well mannered, it also creates a life-long bond between you both and is lots of fun! “We hope that the more people who are educated on how to train their dog correctly will ultimately lead to less dogs coming into their rescue and rescues across the UK, which is one of our main goals as a charity.” If you would like some support with your

training, their highly skilled Enterprise Trainers are here to help. They can give you the tools and skills you need to train and socialise your beloved furry friend correctly. Between them they have over 30 years of experience in variety of areas, if you are interested in any form of training please do get in touch. We have Nicki at our South Lincolnshire centre, who can be contacted on 07824 064242 or nicki. george@jerrygreendogs.org.uk All of the money raised from their training services will go towards the care and rehoming of their rescue dogs - so not only will you be helping your own dog, you’ll be helping those in their care find their forever homes too!

Council’s New Electric Vehicle Charging Points go Live in Spalding South Holland District Council’s new electric vehicle charging points in Spalding have gone live this week, helping to offer residents and visitors a cleaner and greener way to travel in the District. The points are available in Vine Street and Victoria Street, as well as in the visitor section of the Council’s Priory Road car park. The charging points are all fast charging of between 7kW and 22kW, as well as being dual socket units, allowing two cars to be charged at one charging station at the same time. Charging will cost 30p/kWh and can be paid through the InCharge app or using a freely issued RFID charge card or tag. The points will be active 24 hours a day for people to use, although normal parking charges will still apply to anyone using the spaces in Victoria Street or Vine Street. As an introductory offer to give people time to familiarise themselves with using the new

points, the Council and installers Vattenfall are offering free charging until Saturday 1 February, meaning users can top up their vehicle for just the price of a normal car park ticket. The Council are also installing further charging points in other towns and villages across the District in the coming months, including in Crowland, Holbeach and Sutton Bridge. Grants for the installations were secured through the On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme and the Energy Saving Trust, who have provided 75% of the funding. Councillor Anthony Casson, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, said: “It is important that we are responsive to the growing and changing demands and needs of our residents, whilst also furthering our commitment to working towards having a positive environmental impact. “These new charging points are just one of the steps we are taking

towards investing in what our town centres and car parks can offer the District’s residents and visitors. By making them available 24 hours a day we hope they can not only help people top up while they shop, but also give people without the facilities at home to support an electric vehicle the opportunity

to charge in our car parks in the evenings or at night. “I am delighted that Vattenfall have worked with us to be able to offer this new service for free for the rest of January, and I hope to see the points being well-used in the coming months and years as we are able to install more across the District.”

England’s first chief spymaster turns 500… and Burghley is launching a year of celebrations England’s greatest Elizabethan house will be offering visitors a packed year of events and exhibitions to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of one of Elizabethan England’s most powerful figures – and the man who built the magnificent Lincolnshire country house, He may have none of the glamour of Raleigh or Drake, but for Queen Elizabeth I, one man was by her side for 40 years and 2020 will celebrate the birth and lasting legacy of William Cecil, the Queen’s most trusted minister and the country’s first chief spymaster. From rare items displayed together for the first time in a new exhibition - including his personal atlas complete with hand coloured maps and handwritten notes – to a Shakespearean play performed in the garden, a series of high profile lectures and a themed summer school, Burghley is aiming to make 2020 a year to remember for the Lord Burghley 500 anniversary.

In addition, youngsters can put pen to paper to mark ‘Burghley 500’ celebrations with a ‘Burghley Beastly Boring’ story writing competition, to be launched in February. As well as events at Burghley House, on the edge of the Georgian stone town of Stamford, June 2020 will see national celebrations with a service in Westminster Abbey, where his funeral was held in 1598 before he was buried in St Martin’s Church, Stamford, which will host a service in September. As the court’s most powerful man William Cecil – who was born at Bourne, near Stamford, on 13 Sept 1520 - helped shape British history. He was not only Elizabeth I’s chief intelligence gatherer, but also involved in everything from diplomacy and exploration to education and gardening. Two exhibitions at Burghley will offer visitors a chance to discover more about his life and times. The Treasury Exhibition - “The Age of

William Cecil, Builder of Burghley’ – features a wide selection of rare items. As well as the atlas, the exhibition will also feature a Chinese silver-mounted porcelain bowl presented by Queen Elizabeth I and the earliest known plan of a London house and garden – Cecil House on the Strand. Burghley, one of the largest and grandest houses of the first Elizabethan Age, was built and mostly designed by Cecil between 1555 and 1587.

Also new for 2020 will be a timeline exhibition in the House entrance, detailing Cecil’s life and achievements, not only revealing the huge influence he had over every aspect of life in 16th century England, but also his skills as a designer and builder. A series of special lectures will focus on the life, times and legacy of William Cecil with guest speakers inlcuding David Starkey, Lesley Smith and Professor Stephen Alford, www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 5

Nick’s Notes Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....

Worth Cllr Nick

F

ebruary is often a cold month and being right in the middle of winter can often be viewed as gloomy at best, so there can be a tendency towards doom and gloom. The New Year however got off to a bright start with the newly elected parliament having the mandate to get on with business and drive through new legislation, giving certainty and confidence to the business sector. Our local newspapers were reporting a good Christmas

from the retail shops on the high street, so all was looking good. Then we heard that Beales Department Stores (part of a national group) were struggling and were looking to close or sell their store in Spalding followed quickly by an announcement from M&S that they were restructuring and that Simply Food was to be closing as well. Losing both so quickly is a real blow to Spalding and one has to feel sorry for the brilliant staff who work there. As a District Council we will do

agecareadvice.co.uk

6 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

all we can to help them into new jobs. I should point out that we do have a discretionary rate relief policy which we widely promote and while not available for all businesses we are always willing to have a dialogue to help where we can. It is not all doom and gloom though as we have two recent additions to the high street with a fabulous local clothes shop in Robert Goddard and Vodaphone, both of which I am sure will be hugely popular. There is some good news though. The District Council announced towards the end of last year an investment of £500,000 for Spalding and Holbeach to kick start a regeneration programme for both market towns. We now need your ideas and thoughts on how best to increase footfall, make the town more vibrant and inviting. There will be a number of stakeholder workshops starting shortly, so keep an eye out in the local press who are supporting us and on social media. Let’s be positive and look forward, there is no point in dwelling on the past, we need innovative, new ideas that can transform our town centres making them fit for the next twenty years or more. The message from around the country is that high streets are changing rapidly and we have seen this with the demise of many national chain stores. In Spalding and indeed Holbeach our strength lies in our Independent shops who are the glue that hold our town centres together, but to counteract the Internet where most shopping now takes place, independents need to sell

products that are unique to them or the area that are not readily available on the internet – now there is a challenge! While there will never be a return to the high streets we remember, we should now expect to see much more of a mix with shops, eateries, leisure and entertainment – making market towns more of a social hub rather than just shops. To do this we will have to be more flexible in our opening hours, (many towns like Spalding have a dead zone between 5pm and 7pm) so how can we counteract that? Sunday opening and late night shopping surely must be part of the equation if we are to attract the majority of people who work 9am-5pm. There are lots we can do with more events, entertainment in conjunction with the market to add real character, the market itself needs reviewing - again an into town bus along with many other ideas that are out there. So to finish off I am going to ask a question. What is Spalding’s Unique Selling Point? Answers to the editor please. Spalding and our other towns need to promote what is unique to them so that we attract more people into our towns to spend their money and keep them vibrant. There is a lot going for Spalding along with some wonderful assets in Ayscoughfee Hall and The South Holland Centre to name just two. So no need to be gloomy, like an emerging snowdrop, lots to look forward to in the coming months.

Nick

Advice Work Out Which Debts To Deal With First Debts can be placed within two categories: non-priority debt and priority debt. Priority debts’ are debts that can cause you particularly serious problems if you don’t do anything about them. You need to work out which of your debts are priority debts and deal with them first. Make sure you’ve collected together information about all of your debts. A priority debt is a debt which can have serious consequences if it is not addressed. These consequences may include losing your home, liberty of essential services. Examples of priority debts include: rent arrears; mortgage and secured loan arrears; council tax arrears; gas or electricity bills; phone or internet bills (if they are your current supplier) ; Tv licence payments; Magistrate court fines; unpaid income tax; VAT (if business debt). Finally unpaid child support payments are also classified as priority debts. Contact your nearest Citizens Advice if: • you’re struggling to deal with your priority debts • you have more than one priority debt and you need help deciding which to deal with first Once you’ve got your priority debts under control, you should look at all your other debts. They’re ‘nonpriority debts’ because the problems they cause are less serious. Your non-priority debts might include: • credit card or store card debts

• catalogue debts • unsecured loans including payday loans • unpaid water bills - your supplier can’t cut off your water supply • overpayments of benefits - apart from tax credits • unpaid parking tickets - these are called Penalty Charge Notices or Parking Charge Notices • money you owe to family and friends If you don’t pay these debts, your creditors can take you to court to get you to pay. If you owe money to family and friends, it might help to tell them you have other debts. They might offer to wait until you’ve paid off your other debts before asking you to pay them back. If you were an authorised additional cardholder on a credit card account, the credit card company can’t ask you to repay any debts on the card. These are always the responsibility of the main cardholder. When beginning to organise what you owe, collect together all the information about your debts, such as contracts, bills and statements. Your debts might for example include: • rent arrears • credit card debts • council tax arrears • energy or water bills • money you’ve borrowed from friends or family Make a list of your debts and write down the details of each debt. These details might include:

s U o t k l Ta

• who you owe the money to - this is your ‘creditor’ • when you first missed a payment • how much you owe - this might be in a recent statement • your account or reference number - this might be at the top of your statement • what the creditor has done to get the money back - for example, sending you letters or taking you to court Try not to worry when you see all your debts written down - the important thing is that you’re sorting them out. Credit reports show what money you’ve borrowed and paid back. It’s a good idea to get copies of your credit reports to check you’ve got the right details for all your debts. You can get free copies of your credit reports from the 3 credit agencies - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion (formerly Callcredit). Ask for the ‘statutory

Spalding Grammar School Fantastic artwork produced at Spalding Grammar School is making a building site in the town look more attractive, thanks to a former student. Burmor Projects is building 20 social housing units in Willow Walk and managing director Luke Boekestyn came up with the idea to brighten up the site’s hoardings. Twenty one pieces of work have been collated and printed on to an aluminium sheet mounted at the entrance. The firm, which is based at Market Deeping, is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, which aims to improve the image of the industry. Mr Boekestyn, 29, said: “Part of the ethos of the scheme is working with the local community and I thought this would be a good way of showcasing the superb talent at the school while making the site’s hoardings look nicer too. “I’m really pleased with how it looks - the standard of artwork

is very high. I’ve been in the construction industry since I left Spalding Grammar in 2007 and it’s nice to have imagery like this up on the front of the site. “Being an ex-student, I’m delighted and proud to have worked with the school on bringing this idea to fruition. I’d like to thank everyone involved at Spalding Grammar, particularly the students for allowing me to use their exceptional work.” David Wise, the school’s Head of Art, said: “We’re really grateful to Luke and his firm for this fantastic opportunity. Our students can rightly be very proud to see their talented work being used in such a prominent and useful way.”

Since September, our PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) in South Holland have delivered key messages across 22 schools, helping to educate children and keep them safe. We have delivered messages around topics including Road Safety, Online Safety, Challenging Stereotypes, Antisocial behaviour and Scams. We have also covered Crime Scene Investigation, School Parking, Bike Marking and our Random Acts of Kindness task. Each of these carries a different message and involves a different learning style to keep the children engaged. One example of how we keep the Mini Police program engaging is our Crime Scene Investigation task – our Mini Police (and in some schools whole classes) get to play detective. We stage a crime scene within the school, leaving clues that Police officers find in crime scenes such as fingerprints, DNA (from blood, hair, skin cells etc) and footprints. Before our Mini Police can even examine the crime scene, we kit them out with protective equipment – forensic suits and gloves – and they are then tasked to identify anything that could be evidence. If they can identify anything, we challenge them to work out how they can practically recover that evidence from the

crime scene and then we explain how the police use that evidence to identify suspects. Once we’ve gathered all the evidence, we look for suspects – we get the children to work out how we can use what is in our surroundings to identify suspects. If we are able to identify any (we usually do!) then we have to think about what we would want to ask those suspects – our Mini Police write their own interview questions and then interview the suspects. It is up to them to work out ‘whodunit’. Pictured are the children from Holbeach Primary Academy in action during their investigation. This session is great fun to be part of, but also helps to deliver learning about how the Police solve crimes, how forensics and science help to find evidence, and how using open questions (who, what, where, when, why and how) help to increase our knowledge base and put the pieces of the investigative puzzle together. Another topic we cover is Scams – we know that your average 9-11 year old isn’t likely to be a scam victim – mainly because they don’t have what the scammers want – money – but we know that primary school age children come into contact with lots of adults – from parents and grandparents to family friends and others in their communities. We set out to teach the children what scams are, what types of scams there are, how to identify a scam and what to do if they think something is a scam or someone might be a

victim of a scam. We do this with our Powerpoint presentation (written by ourselves in association with Friends Against Scams and adopted nationally by Trading Standards), and by using interactive games and

challenges to encourage the children to apply their newfound knowledge. Pictured are the children from Year 5 and 6 at Spalding Primary School who recently became Young Friends Against Scams.

The Importance of

Keeping it Local As we hear the news that several prominent retail sites in the town look set to close we are looking at more empty shop fronts, loss of jobs and a sad town centre. We all want the speed and convenience of online shopping today but quite simply how do we expect the town centre shops to stay open if we are changing where we spend our money? We are not alone famous UK retail names that have vanished in the past couple of years include Toys R Us, Maplin and Poundworld. HMV is on the brink. The Centre for Retail Research reported that 43 retailers bit the dust in 2018, affecting 2,594 stores. So what’s the answers? How can you make a difference? The first thing to consider is where you spend your money, we have many national and also a great mix of independent shops on our high street which unless we support them they will not thrive and survive. National stores work on statistics and if a store isn’t performing it will be closed. Independents have more of an emotional approach but facts are facts and accountants reports are final; hard decisions have to be made but ultimately business owners have to close if they aren’t supported by the community. Why Supporting our Small Business is Supporting Our Community Small businesses create jobs. Many of the ‘new’ jobs that we are told have been created in the UK in recent years have been created by people who have taken the leap of faith to go self-employed, or

start their own business and grow it so that they can employ others. Spending money with a small business keeps more money in your local economy. Research by local authorities in the UK has shown that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business, 63p stays in the local economy. This compares to 40p in every £1 spent with larger businesses. Small businesses will spend more of the money they earn locally, buying products and services from other small businesses, going out to eat and buying tickets for local sports events, the local cinema and local theatre shows. It’s a real win-win situation for our local businesses and communities, helping other businesses to thrive and safeguarding local jobs. Small independents add colour and variety to our towns and villages. It would be a boring shopping experience if every street had the same national chain stores. One great thing about the big High Street shopping names is that you know what to expect. They are successful because they are consistent when you go into a branch anywhere in the country. Of course they bring shoppers into town and they provide jobs. But it’s also great when you find a one-off shop, founded and run by people with a passion for what they do. Small business owners are at the forefront of innovation. Owners of independent businesses have the freedom, agility and flexibility to run things their way. They don’t have to go through long-

winded processes to get approval for new ideas and they can respond quickly to what their customers want. They know that by building up loyal, regular customers who shout about their business to others, their business will grow. They will listen to your feedback and ideas and that means you can have a bit of influence over what they sell. Small businesses care about their reputation. Businesses only enjoy longevity by delivering great customer service, quality products and services and value that keeps their customers coming back – and continually attracts new customers too. Shopping local is about the guarantees you have because you know the business owner and their standing in the local community. Small food businesses are often more environmentally friendly. When you shop at a local bakers, butchers, market or farm shop, it is likely that a high percentage of what’s on sale has had a relatively short journey from where it was first produced. So how does the high street of the future look like? Council planners across the country are having to think smart about what the high street offers. Where retail stores once stood they are being filled with services such as medical centres, children’s activity destinations, training centres to compliment the retailers and bring a purpose into bringing people into the town. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 17

Saxon Wills & Estate Planning Saxon Wills & Estate Planning has over 20 years of experience, and we are proud members of the Society of Will Writers. We work with one of the leading specialist solicitors for complex Trust and Probate cases, and we are backed by 2.5 million pounds of insurance. We specialise in Complex Family Wills More families than ever have complex estate planning needs, and so it is important to set up your will correctly. Did you know that without a specific bequest, your stepchildren do not inherit your estate? Or that if you are not married, your partner’s parents could inherit everything, and you’ll get nothing? Maybe you are on your second marriage, and you want your property to pass on to your children, but you want your new spouse to be able to live in the property until they pass. We can arrange this for you and protect your wishes. Some of our clients have children from two or more different marriages, and they want to ensure that both sets of children inherit. A standard Will simply can’t do this, and could mean that everything gets left to one set of children by default. We can set up Wills that protect all of your children’s inheritances. Our clients are also concerned about care home fees reducing their children’s inheritance, and they express worries about their surviving spouse remarrying and the entire estate becoming the property of the new spouse, and not their children. We can ensure that this doesn’t happen. We can set up a Will that is fair to all parties, and protects your children. Business Wills Did you know that if you own a business and you do not have a specific business Will, it could be taxed at 40%? This would mean that your life’s work may need to be sold to pay these high taxes, and your descendants will lose control of your company. We can prevent this from happening. Lasting Power of Attorney. Why you may need a Lasting Power of Attorney: When you are alive and well, you can take care of your own affairs, and when you pass away, your Executor then deals with your affairs. However, things are not always so cut and dry. There may come a time that you suffer from limited mental capacity, perhaps due to a stroke, dementia, or a brain injury. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney

(LPA), your affairs could be in limbo, with your accounts off limits, your property unable to be sold, and any paperwork that requires a signature put on hold. Even if you are married and have joint accounts, your spouse is not granted automatic rights, and if you are not married, your partner has no legal status at all. Prevent this from happening by setting up an LPA, and appointing an attorney of your choice to act on your behalf. LPAs come into affect in the case that you lose your mental capacity, and prevent addition stress for you and your loved ones at a difficult time. We are agents for a range of funeral plan providers. There are a number of reasons for planning your own funeral. By creating this plan, you remove some of the stress from your family at a very stressful time, and you ensure that your wishes are known. Planning your own funeral and fixing its cost today can also have a great financial benefit. Funeral cost have risen 70.6% in the last 10 years, what will the cost be in 10 or 20 years time? By arranging your funeral plan fixed at today’s prices you can spend your reserves, without worrying that your family will need your funds later for a funeral. It may be that you can afford a funeral at today’s prices, but you don’t want to commit to paying for a funeral plan in full. If this is the case, we can arrange plans where you can spread the payments across up to 15 years. We can also offer interest-free plans with payments spread across 5 years. Maybe you simply don’t have the funds to plan your funeral. With low or no deposit plans, we can arrange a plan to fit your monthly budget. ALL OF OUR PLANS ARE FIXED AT TODAY’S PRICES. Our plans do not require a heath check. We can explain the difference between pre-paid plans and insurance-based plans. Did you know there are some plans in which you could lose every penny even AFTER you have paid in more that you could ever get back? Arrange your Funeral Plan with our partners, and receive a discount of up to 50% on your Wills and further Estate Planning.

Health & Beauty

Choose Wisely Aesthetic Practitioner, Nina Taylor-Norris talks to us about the practicalities and what to be mindful of when considering an aesthetic treatment. The popularity of aesthetics treatments are continuing to soar, with more people opting for non surgical procedures rather than ‘going under the knife’. Treatments are advancing and becoming less of a taboo subject, treatments that were once reserved exclusively for the rich and famous, are now becoming part of beauty regimes in everyday life. So Who Do You Choose? Aesthetic treatments choices can be a minefield, so it is of high importance that individuals research before treatments. Firstly, it is important to know what to look for in a clinic or practitioner. With so many people (medical and non-medical) practicing within the industry, people can often be blinded by practical elements, such as pricing and location. When choosing an aesthetics practitioner the most important things to be aware of is they should a registered medical professional and fully qualified in Aesthetics. I would recommend

Profile

to always choose a Doctor, Nurse or Dentist to carry out your treatment, these medical professionals are all regulated with governing bodies such as the GMC (General medical council) NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) and GDC (General Dental Council) meaning that they are accountable for their practice, work and patient care. Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures and therefore should be carried out

20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

by a medical professional with detailed knowledge of anatomy, facial and neck arterial structure and the management of potential complications. Always remember that Drs, Nurses and Dentists can hold emergency medications and reversal agents (for dermal fillers) in case of allergic reaction or complication. Medical professionals will also give you the option of a face to face consultations, this a legality for anti-wrinkle treatment as this is a prescription medication but optional with dermal fillers. This isn’t a hard sell technique, it’s for you to ask the questions that you have and for them to discuss your medical history, needs, expectations and risks, it also helps them tailor your treatment to you, as an individual. It will give you time to decide which treatment option is best for you. Remember that good work isn’t cheap, and cheap work isn’t good. If you would like to discuss your options or to arrange a free consultation call Nina on 07368 604815.

Put a Spring in Your Step Feet are often the foundation upon which our entire physical lives are based. Any activity that requires standing or squatting, such as walking, running, and cycling, requires your feet for stability and balance. Despite how important feet are, they are often neglected and ignored because they are so often hidden away under socks and shoes. Taking proper care of your feet will keep them looking clean, soft, and presentable, and it will also help ensure good foot health and overall health. The best way to take care of your feet includes keeping up good hygiene practices, eating right and taking care of your body, and addressing pain and medical issues that could cause problems. Keep your feet clean. Wash your feet every day with warm water and a mild cleanser. Even if you don’t shower each day, take a few minutes to wash your feet in a sink or tub. Avoid soaking your feet, however, as this can strip away natural oils. Washing your feet daily will keep your skin clean and bright, prevent odour, and can prevent corns, infections, ingrown toenails, and calluses. Exfoliate and scrub. For softer feet, remove dead skin cells and improve circulation by gently scrubbing your feet every day with a pumice stone. Focus especially on your heels and toes. Don’t scrub too hard, or this will promote a thick and protective layer of skin to grow. Keep your feet dry and your socks clean. After you wash your feet, swim, shower, or get your feet wet, thoroughly pat them dry with a clean towel. Be especially careful to dry the area in between your toes. Change your socks every day, and always put on clean socks after

washing your feet. Socks and feet that are dry and clean are the best defence against foot odour. Moisturize daily. Keeping your feet moisturized will keep the skin soft and supple. After you wash and dry your feet, massage your favourite moisturizer into the skin before putting on clean socks. Don’t moisturise between your toes. If this area stays damp or wet, it can lead to fungal growth and infection. Take care of your nails. Cut your toenails regularly, but never too short. If your nails are too short, dirt and fungus can get in between the skin and nail and cause an infection. Clean under your nails with a nail brush, clean toothbrush, or a rubber or wooden manicure stick. Avoid ingrown nails by cutting your toenails straight, not at an angle or rounded at the edges. To smooth the edges down after trimming, use an emery board and file gently in one direction only. Nail polish is acceptable to use on healthy toenails once in a while, but

don’t apply polish to unhealthy nails or to cover up discoloured nails— this could be a sign of infection and covering it with polish will prevent it from clearing up. Eating for Foot Health Consume plenty of calcium. Everybody knows that calcium helps to build strong bones, but many people don’t realize that osteoporosis, or bone loss, often shows up first in the feet. No matter your age, your body and feet need between 1,000 and 1,300 mg of calcium per day to stay strong and healthy. Good dietary sources of calcium include: • Dark green vegetables, such as kale, spinach, bok choi and broccoli • Edamame, soybeans, and white beans

• Figs and oranges • Sardines and salmon • Almonds Get enough vitamin D. V itamin D is another necessary daily nutrient, in part because it helps our bodies absorb the calcium we need for strong bones and healthy feet. On a daily basis, we need between 400 IU to 1,000 IU of vitamin D. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight, but there are also dietary sources, including: • Mushrooms • Fortified orange juice, almond milk, tofu, breakfast cereal, and oatmeal • Liver • Mackerel and canned tuna If you have any concerns regarding your feet talk to your GP or local Podiatrist or Chiropodist.

Write notes about your feelings and favorite things about your special person. You’ve Been Framed The two of you probably have

hundreds of couple photos taken and collected over the years. But where are they all, stored away on your desktop, Facebook or in the back of a shelf? They are probably just sitting around collecting dust. Well we reckon that it is time to do something about it. A framed photo can make such special gift for your significant other, or why not compile a photo album in chronological order of your time together? Another idea is printing different pictures of you together and forming a heart shape on the wall. We promise you that your partner’s heart will melt when they see all the thought and love that has gone into this gift. Whether you have been lovers since a school age, university or it is a newly sparked romance, it is always important to make that special effort on Valentine’s Day. If you have been with you partner for many years and have kids, it doesn’t mean you should feel less excited about this special day for lovers. Take a day off for yourselves – leave the kids in childcare for a day or with someone you trust and feel young again!

Home & Property

Kitchen Makeover on a Budget If your kitchen dreams are bigger than your budget, try some of these ideas. You can scale down your project by doing less construction, trimming luxury materials, or rethinking the ingredients that make up traditional kitchen design. Let these ideas help you get a lovely kitchen for a little less money. Substitute Furniture Not every wall in the kitchen needs to be wrapped in cabinetry. Use furniture creatively to achieve an unfitted look on a budget. Create a pantry from an armoire or an island from an old table. Research Before You Buy Compare prices. Most big-item stores carry additional products online and will special order just about anything from top manufacturers at below list price. Refinish Your Cupboards If your cupboards are in good working condition, but you don’t like the style, refinishing them is the best way to get a new look for less. Homeowners with basic do-it-yourself skills can give them a fresh coat of paint. Or, send them out to a paint

shop for a factory-finish spray coat. Wallpaper The sky is the limit with wallpaper. Use them to dress up a wall, to apply to a cupboard door, or to line the back of an open cupboard. They deliver an instant style upgrade. Splurge Sensibly If your heart is set on a material, then splurge. But to keep costs in line, choose the material in a way that will make a big impact for less. Take marble, for example. Use it on a small island instead of all counter surfaces. Or shop for a marble tile to use as a backsplash. Paint Anything! Without a doubt, paint is the fastest way to a fresh look for the least amount of money. Use

it to freshen old wood floors, to remake tired cupboards, and to add a focal point wall to your kitchen. With careful prep work, you can even paint counters and backsplash tiles. Assemble Your Cupboards Flat-pack or ready-to-assemble cupboards reward homeowners who are willing to invest a little elbow grease with deep discounts. The cabinets come flat and unassembled. Each box needs to be built before it can be hung. Accents & Appliances Consider replacing sinks, lighting, and appliances as part of a total makeover. If these elements are more than 10 years old, they’re probably showing signs of wear and may not have some of the convenience, style, and operating features that today’s products offer. Eliminate Upper Cupboards If the budget is tight and you can do with less, install lower cupboards only for a significant cost savings. In place of upper cabinets, you can display art, hang a shelf or two, or create a feature wall.

Easy to Clean There are unlimited options for paint and wallcoverings to spruce up the walls -- just make sure that whatever you choose can be easily cleaned. There are also many kinds of window treatments, but for ease of installation and cleanup, keep the design uncomplicated.

Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms

E

veryone agrees that the kitchen is the heart of any home and that you can’t beat a relaxing long soak in a luxurious bath to unwind at the end of a hard and tiring working day. Nobody knows that better than Stephen and Sarah Devonport who turned a longterm dream into a reality when they set up their own Devonports kitchen and bathroom design and installation business in Deeping St James. “It all began over 14 years ago with a desire to provide people with beautiful bathrooms and kitchens married up with expert design, advice and customer service,” said Sarah. They worked out of a home office and van in the early days of the business but were so driven with the dream of one day having their own showroom, that it was only a matter of time before the couple realised their ambition.

We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We enjoyed many years of continued growth and success and our dream finally became a reality in 2009 when Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms was born,” said Sarah. “Our initial showroom started out at 45 Bridge Street, Deeping St James and we now occupy the neighbouring two units which has allowed us to expand our existing showroom with further kitchen and bathroom displays.” The Devonports’ kitchens, along with its fitted bathroom furniture, are manufactured in Birmingham by Mereway Limited, which has more than 30 years of continued growth and success. They have three ranges within their kitchen portfolio and expanding into the showroom next door has given the Devonports the opportunity to display even more options. The new kitchen settings have been specifically designed to showcase different door styles and colours and different styles

of worktop. “We have included different ideas for islands that incorporate seating at breakfast bar level height and table height to give numerous options and ideas when planning a kitchen,” said Sarah. “Our existing showroom houses even more kitchen settings with laminate, Granite, Quartz and Corian worktops, all in an array of colours and shapes to show the beauty that can be created from all materials. “Just a change of worktop in your kitchen can often breathe new life and vitality into a room that perhaps felt tired before.” “At Devonports we strive to offer that something extra to the kitchen and bathroom buying experience. “We are not driven by a team of sales staff, we have no targets or limits to reach or achieve, only the ones that we set ourselves

to make our customers’ experiences enjoyable and personal. “We listen, which we believe is quite possibly the most important part of our communication with you, and we offer practical and knowledge-based advice. “We do not take it lightly that we are welcomed into people’s homes and so we always treat them with the utmost respect, keeping our working environment as clean and tidy as possible at all times.” Devonports has its own team of in-house kitchen and bathroom fitters, and uses the services of the same tilers, electricians and plasterers that it has for many years. “Whether you are looking to change your kitchen worktops, replace your bath with a shower or build a brand new extension to incorporate a new kitchen we can take care of it all,” said Sarah.

Gallery Tiles and Bathrooms

A

fter completing the first five years in business we are still growing. More and more referrals from retail customers and tradesmen are coming in. The biggest advantage of Gallery Tiles and Bathrooms is the assistance given to customers. Most people struggle to envisage the look they want and how to put it together. Weather it’s tiling a kitchen floor or putting together a new bathroom, we pull out all the stops to help. For example, a tiled kitchen floor is often a big undertaking and a lifelong choice. Customers are always asked to come in with a sample of the kitchen units, which are now often two colours, and a sample of worktop. Then appropriate tiles are pulled from the many choices available and laid on the floor because that is the way they would be viewed. After choosing two or three samples the customer can then take these away and view them in their own home in their lighting. You’d be surprised how many customers change their mind at that point on which they thought was the “best match”. Lighting and the actual site are big issues when choosing floor or wall tiles. All the samples taken are free of charge. With the bathroom refurbishment or new build, a loose quotation is built up from a site survey and the customers choices and requirements. A computer image can also be provided to assist with placement and sizing of items. The quotation is reviewed, maybe several times, whilst searching for the ideal items and requirements for the customer. There is so much to choose from, be it freestanding baths, open showers, comfort height toilets and beautiful

furniture. Designs range from boutique hotel looks to the more practical for the elderly or less able. Smaller projects are a regular part of Gallery Tiles and Bathrooms. Usually when customers need to take out baths and install showers but don’t want the upheaval or expense of a full refurbishment. Shower wall panels are a great answer to this issue and there are many to choose from. Whatever your needs Gallery Tiles and bathrooms are here to listen to your requests. Information and advise is readily available for you to take or consider.
