Happy New Year! Here we are, another New Year. January is associated with fresh starts, new challenges and learning from the past 12 months. I am looking forward to 2015 as we have an exciting year ahead. We are still in the process of making changes to our new home and this will continue, I’m sure well into the year. January for me is always a quiet month and recovering from all the excitement of Christmas and I’m sure this year will be no different. So all that remains for me to say is a very Happy New Year from all at Simply Spalding.

What’s On

Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Hello! A Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and are looking forward to the year ahead. As with the start to every new year most of us have our New Year’s Resolutions in the backs of our minds and some of us are ready and raring to go whilst others know what needs to be done but are more than a little reluctant to start! We prefer to think of is as a “New You” and as such we have taken a look at the “Top 2” from the resolution list, diet and exercise. Elsewhere we assess our finances and consider the best breakfast! Whatever you decide to do, may 2015 be your best year yet! Enjoy the issue.

Artsathlon hailed a success Artistic youngsters have been awarded medals and certificates for taking part in The Great South Holland Artsathlon. Originally inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games, The Great South Holland Artsathlon invites children aged from four upwards to take part in arts activities during the summer holidays. This year participants enjoyed over 260 sessions and they were rewarded for their efforts during a special ceremony at the South Holland Centre in Spalding last week. Cllr Sally-Ann Slade and local artist Maria Maidment handed out 40 medals and certificates to the delighted youngsters. Participants were awarded points for each activity and these were added up to determine who could win either at the South Holland Centre and Ayscoughfee Bronze, Silver or Gold medals. Hall. Activities included visual and Councillor Nick Worth, portfolio holder for performing arts workshops, creative writing sessions and watching shows Community, said: “This year’s Artsathlon was

a great success and to see so many medals presented is outstanding. “I would like to thank everyone who took part, I am sure they all enjoyed themselves.”

Santa’s Suitcase bursting at the seams! Staff at Lincolnshire Co-op’s Spalding travel branch helped to stuff Santa’s suitcase full of toys for children at Boston Pilgrim Hospital Children’s Ward. In the run up to Christmas the team asked customers to donate toys and gifts, and manager Kate Townsend said that they had been stunned by the response. “We had lots of toys donated, from cute teddies to loom bands, sticker books and even a wooden train set,” she said. “Lots of our loyal customers brought in presents as they do every year, but we’ve seen a lot of new faces too,” Kate said. “Our customers’ kindness for strangers who need that little extra support over the festive period is overwhelming. “Being a child in hospital must be very hard, especially over Christmas, so this is just our way of showing we care.” All 13 of Lincolnshire Co-op’s travel branches took part in the Santa’s Suitcase appeal, with each one collecting toys for a cause local to them. Terry Vine, Matron in Acute Paediatrics at the trust said that the

toys would make a real difference: “Children who have been on the ward before look forward to visiting again because the playroom is an exciting place to be,” she said. “Because we see so many children in the department, our toys are well loved and we have to replace them regularly.” “Donations like this are essential to keep our playroom fun and exciting and we are extremely grateful to the Spalding branch of Lincolnshire Co-op Travel and their customers for their kind and generous donations.”

Crowland Abbey Festival of Art

Safe Local Trades raises over £6,720 for Age UK Peterborough During September and October each year, Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades organise fund-raising events for their chosen charity Age UK Peterborough. This year, there were several skydives organised and a team took part in the annual Great Eastern Run. All events were an overall success and the organiser, Eileen Le Voi, owner of Safe Local Trades, said: “We would like to thank each and every volunteer who took part as well as everyone who sponsored them in their events, all of which helped to raise an amazing £6,720.25 for this very worthy local charity.” Eileen went on to say, “We would

particularly like to thank Axiom Housing Association for getting involved and helping to raise over £1,600. In addition to the skydives that two members of staff took part in, dozens of individual sheltered accommodation schemes raised money by having coffee mornings, quizzes, and the like—it shows great community spirit to know that elderly people were raising money for their counterparts”. David Bache, Chief Executive of Age UK Peterborough, said “We are so delighted with this excellent achievement by Eileen and the fabulous volunteers. This is the largest amount we have ever raised in one campaign so my sincere thanks go to Eileen Le Voi, Axiom Housing Association and all the wonderful volunteers who make such a difference to the work we do to help and support older people in Peterborough. Over the past few years, Eileen and Safe Local Trades have helped raise over £25,000— no other local company has ever raised this amount for our charity and we are enormously grateful.”

Crowland Abbey recently held its first Festival of Art. Artists were asked to depict any part of Crowland Parish and although many painted the Abbey or the unique Trinity Bridge, others used the old South View School, the War Memorial with poppies or the Snowdon field on a Crowland Show day. The eminent judges were Jackie Devereux and Karen Neal. Jackie has always lived and worked in the creative world and has spent the last twenty years living in rural Southern France, before moving to Crowland last year. She is a member of the society of Graphic Fine Art in London and exhibits her award-winning works in the UK, France, USA and Japan. Karen trained as an architect before she decided to concentrate on her art full-time. She has a particular style, which won her a Winston Churchill Scholarship to depict World Heritage sites. On her return, she was Artist in residence at the Lying in State of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Then Artist in Residence at Lord’s Cricket Ground. She recently moved to Stamford, where she holds classes and exhibitions. They were extremely impressed with the standard of work and found the judging extremely difficult. The 1st prize and the St Guthlac Award was presented to Ms Sam Turton for ‘Summer Abbey’. Joint runners up and The Abbot Turketyl Awards were awarded to Mrs Shirley Walton for Nearly Home, Veronica Pryke for Crowland Abbey and Stephen Billson for Evening Lights. Highly Commended Monk Awards were awarded to Matthew Robak, Teresa Sanderson and Rachel Weston. Guests enjoyed a Preview of the pictures on Friday evening and the Exhibition was open for the Weekend. Lord Taylor of Holbeach and Lady Taylor toured the exhibition on the Saturday morning. They met artists and Abbey guides as well as taking the opportunity to view the recently opened visitor centre. There is great enthusiasm to repeat the festival in 2015, so start painting!

Rent a new home in Pinchbeck

People with a local connection to Pinchbeck have a unique chance to rent a new home in the village. Fourteen houses are being built in Flaxmill Lane, Pinchbeck, as part of a scheme set up by the Pinchbeck Community Land Trust (CLT) and supported by South Holland District Council. The £1.4 million development of two and three bedroom properties will be completed in early spring 2015 and the Lincolnshire Rural Housing Association will then take management of the homes. The houses will benefit from a number of features including an allotment area. Cllr Christine Lawton, the council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “The new homes are exclusively available to people who live in Pinchbeck, and we want to ensure that local people do not miss out. “The local connection criteria concerns those who live in the parish, work in the parish, have family who live in the parish, or those who lived their previously and had to move away due to issues in finding accommodation in Pinchbeck. “Anybody who wishes to register an interest in the homes needs to speak to the council’s Housing Advice team, who will advise on the application process.” For more details contact South Holland District Council’s Housing Advice team on 01775 761161, quoting the Flaxmill Lane development. 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Street drinking illegal from January 12 Drinking alcohol in the street in Boston town centre is to become illegal on January 12. The Safer Spalding scheme is a joint working initiative aimed at reducing the harmful impact of anti-social behaviour linked to street drinking by sharing good practice. The businesses will be provided assistance on how to trade responsibly including having pride in the local community, age restricted products and to promote partnership working as part of the voluntary scheme that they are supporting. Retailers will be supported by Police, licensing officers and Trading Standards who will help ensure that their business is not adversely affected. The scheme, which is voluntary within Spalding town centre, will encourage retailers not to sell super strength alcohol and single cans of alcohol - both are a tactic which has proved highly effective at tackling the problems in other parts of the UK. Community Policing Inspector Jim Tyner said: “In a similar project elsewhere, this initiative showed there was 50 per cent less anti-social behaviour, 40 per cent less street drinking and 25 per cent less shoplifting linked to the off licence that had taken part, with no damage to alcohol sales.” Stuart Brotherton, Business Watch coordinator, said: “Safer Spalding has the full support of the Chamber of Trade as it will contribute to a more pleasant shopping environment and safer place for those that work in the town centre.” Alcohol is a serious public health concern and excessive drinking is linked to social impacts such as domestic violence, homelessness, teenage pregnancy and antisocial behaviour. Alcohol-related issues cost the NHS in Lincolnshire an estimated £41 million in

2010/11. The scheme is supported by a number of agencies including South Holland District Council, Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire Trading Standards, Lincolnshire Chambers of Commerce and businesses are already supporting the voluntary scheme in the town centre. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, Portfolio Holder for Regulatory Services, said: “This initiative is aimed at reducing the impact of street drinking by working supportively with licensed retailers and providing a framework to encourage understanding of the role of alcohol retailers in tackling the issues of street drinking and alcohol associated anti-social behaviour. “Evidence from retailers in other areas have demonstrated that by supporting the proposed voluntary scheme improved shop security and no adverse effects on trade are achievable. “In partnership with the police and other agencies, we want to ensure residents feel safe and comfortable in Spalding.” Inspector Tyner added: “Street drinking continues to be a significant issue for many people. “This scheme will support the work of my officers by reducing the amount of super-strength beers that are easily available. “The single-can policy will mean that street-drinkers will be taking more of a financial hit when we seize alcohol from them. This will have an impact on their ability to buy more alcohol.” For more information and how you can support the scheme contact the licensing team at South Holland District Council by visiting www.sholland.gov.uk.

Calling all local artists Artists are invited to enter a prestigious competition designed to showcase the best work created by professionals and amateurs across the region. Entries are now open for the 15th South Holland Open Arts Exhibition which will take place at the South Holland Centre in Spalding from March 5 - 12 2015. Artists can submit their work and an independent panel of judges will choose the pieces which will be displayed at the exhibition. Cllr Howard Johnson, portfolio holder for arts development, said: “This prestigious event has been

running since 1999 and previously attracted artists and visitors from all over the East of England. “I’m sure next year’s event will be of the usual excellent standard and I look forward to seeing the artwork on display.” The contest is open to any professional or amateur artist over the age of 14 living or working in Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Leicestershire or Fenland. Artists can enter up to three works by completing

an Open Arts entry form and submitting it to the Community Development team by Friday, January 30 2015. Full details and rules can be found in the entry form. Entry forms are available from South Holland District Council, The South Holland Centre, Ayscoughfee Hall Museum, libraries and galleries in South Holland and online at www.sholland. gov.uk. New Food Hygiene Training Schemes Businesses can boost their food hygiene knowledge by attending locally run courses. This can also boost compliance and help firms achieve a better Food Hygiene Rating. South Holland District Council has its own in-house training centre that provides nationally recognised qualifications on food hygiene and health and safety. Over 2,600 people have been trained here with courses run in the evenings or during the day at our offices in Priory Road, Spalding, or at a firm’s own premises. The Food, Health and Safety Team can also provide one-to-one coaching and consultancy on food hygiene and health and safety matters. Interactive workshops are also planned from January 2015 focusing on the new Allergen Legislation coming into force on December 13 2014. The workshops will cost around £25 per head, be held at the Council Offices and run for 2-3 hours. Business owners, employees and members of the public can ask questions and discuss issues with officers. During September the centre ran a CIEH Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering and all who attended passed. Craig Fowler, Food Health and Safety Manager said: “The course is designed for supervisors who are accountable for food safety systems and it is vital that they are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to do their job effectively.

“With the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme so heavily in the media at the moment, the basis of good hygiene must start with all employees being trained to the correct level.” Cllr Malcolm Chandler, Portfolio holder for Environmental Health, said: “I am pleased that local businesses are able to interact with the local authority in order to ensure that their staff receive food hygiene training and are able to operate to high standards in the district and serve safe food.” Three employees who passed a CIEH Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering were recently presented with their certificates. Stuart Cooper from Brian Frisby Butchers in Spalding, said: “The course was enjoyable - it never felt like being back in the classroom.” Angie Parrish from Stop Café at Angie’s Plant Centre in Low Fulney, added: “The training will certainly stand us in good stead, I would definitely recommend it.” Emma Beavis from St Norbert’s Primary School in Spalding said: “I learned a great deal.” For further information or to book a place on a course visit http://www.sholland.gov.uk/ environment/food/training/ or email the team at foodhs@sholland.gov.uk.

I received a phone call from Simply Spalding back in December, to say that the deadline for my regular article was fast approaching to them the next day, (not for the first time I might add!). I am one of those who works better under pressure, particularly where timelines are concerned and do tend to leave things to the last minute, so maybe a New Year’s resolution is called for! At the time of the phone call, I had to explain that I was unable to do it at the moment as I was at North Sea Camp (HM Prison). Somewhat taken aback by the reply, I had to quickly explain I was there for a meeting of the Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership, not because I had been a naughty boy! I hope she believed me! This made me think that you may appreciate having an insight into the prison, that I was lucky enough to benefit from first hand. North Sea Camp is an open Category D prison, which opened in 1935 as a Borstal. The original group of staff and trainees set out from Stafford Prison and established a tented camp at the site. They immediately began building a permanent structure, much of which remains to this day. It became an adult, men only prison in 1988 and has a capacity for 420 offenders. Around 74% of offenders come from Lincolnshire and can be people nearing the end of a life sentence, low risk criminal offenders and sex offenders. Offender categories are based on the risk to the general public should they escape and Category D offenders are the lowest (safest) category where they are trusted to be in open conditions ( there are no fences to keep them in). The main emphasis is on resettlement which is well demonstrated by their Jubilee Accommodation where offenders learn to cook, clean and budget for themselves as if they were back in society. Offenders are allowed to go into Boston for example, but they must have a reason and be able to prove that they did what they said they were going to do, such as going to the bank, hospital and shopping and are rigorously monitored. Many work out in the community and you will have seen some of them on community pay back schemes, helping to make our towns and villages cleaner and greener. There are an excellent range of learning

and educational opportunities to help them integrate back into society with courses on IT and personal development courses along with workshops in painting, decorating and bricklaying. There are also courses in horticulture, tractor driving, lawnmower repair, animal care and also fork lift truck driving with NVQs being available in catering. All in all I was very impressed with the standards of behaviour and politeness from the many offenders I met as our group toured the facility. Cleanliness and hygiene were equally apparent in this open prison, which is largely self sustaining in terms of food production which in itself was impressive. They had also recently undergone an Ofsted inspection looking at their education and library which was good but in need of computers, which has now been rectified with appropriate security. Clearly for a lot of offenders who end up in an open prison such as North Sea Camp, many of whom have been locked away in cells for 10 years or more, being told what to do and when to do it, find the transition to an open prison can be quite frightening, intimidating and challenging. There were stories of offenders who had never been to a McDonald’s or visited a modern supermarket, were unaware of the costs of food and clothing and for some just the speed that cars can go on the road. Transition from prison life to modern society is a huge step to take and I am pleased to say it has been well understood at North Sea Camp. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Governor, Paul Yates and his staff for taking the time to show us round and give us a real insight into the workings of an open prison. At the end of the day though, don’t for one minute think it is a soft touch, they are expected to work here and living conditions in this remote part of our countryside are basic as you might expect. A lot better than a prison cell, but not for me thanks! So with that in mind, have a great New Year and be good!

Nick

is busy growing its property marketing portfolio in Lincolnshire. Managing Director Hayley Hammond comments: “I am very fortunate to have already set up a company 7 years ago to produce SIMPLY MAGAZINES and therefore have the infrastructure already in place for running a business, however SIMPLY PROPERTY has been a real challenge for me, something which I relish. Keeping a business going for the first 12 months really is a battle and only the fittest survive and come out the other side. I am pleased to say with the support of fantastic clients we are in a strong position to move into year 2.” Undoubtedly the key to SIMPLY PROPERTY’s success has been customer service and offering something different to high street agents. From a recent survey of clients who used SIMPLY PROPERTY 100% of respondents said they would recommend them to a friend or relative – not a bad testimonial! SIMPLY PROPERTY offer a one-stop-shop approach to the moving process with the ability to introduce purchasers to local solicitors, financial advisors, removal companies and the many other services that you may need during and after the moving process. Also, by utilising their knowledge from SIMPLY MAGAZINES they are able to put you in contact with reliable local businesses. SIMPLY PROPERTY are delighted to be able to take you through the process of buying one of these fantastic new homes. As well as managing the show home they will be able to give you site access, show you the plans and answer any questions you might have. Advice

Who can get free NHS dental treatment? ❱ BY LISA BARWELL

You can get free dental treatment (including check-ups) if you: • are under 18 • are under 19 and in full-time education • are pregnant • have given birth in the last twelve months • are getting Income Support, income- based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance or the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit • Universal Credit. Also, some people on a low income, including some people getting tax credits, can get free NHS dental treatment or treatment at a reduced cost. More details about help with dental costs can be found on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk.

How to find an NHS dentist If you want NHS dental treatment, you first need to find out which dentists in your area provide NHS treatment. Then you need to find one who is accepting new patients. You can do this by going to the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk and clicking on Dentists or call NHS 111. If you can’t find an NHS dentist who is accepting new patients, NHS England will be able to tell you which dentist in your area currently accepts patients. You don’t need to register with a dentist in order to get NHS treatment but your dentist should keep a list of regular patients and provide ongoing treatment and care. Some dentists do have contracts to only treat children on the NHS. However, they can’t insist that they’ll only treat your children on the NHS if you are taken on as a private patient. Under certain circumstances, your dentist may discontinue a course of treatment. This could happen, for example, if you don’t

cooperate with treatment or if you fail to turn up for lots of appointments. Where violence or the threat of violence occurs, your dentist could discontinue treatment straight away, without any advance warning.

What treatment can you get on the NHS? You’re entitled to any treatment which you need to maintain your dental health. This could include the fitting of crowns, bridges and dentures. The dentist will give you a treatment plan after your check-up if you ask for it, which will show you what you need and the cost. There are three standard charges for a course of NHS dental treatment, depending on the treatment needed. These should be displayed in your dentist’s waiting room. Some things, such as denture repairs, are free. More details about NHS dental fees are available on the NHS Choices website at www.nhs.uk. Your dentist may offer to do part of the work on your treatment plan or additional treatment, privately. However, they should not pressure you into having treatment privately which is available on the NHS. If your dentist

tries to do this, you should complain. If you have been getting NHS treatment and need to start treatment for something that has to be done privately, you should be given a form to sign to say you agree to begin private treatment. Some treatment is not available on the NHS and can only be done privately, for example, white fillings in back teeth. www.adviceguide.org.uk

Complaints about dentists If you want to complain about your dentist, you should complain to your dental practice first. You can do this either by speaking to someone at the practice, or in writing. The dental practice must make a record of your complaint and look into it. If you are not satisfied after this, you can appeal or refer the problem to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. You might also want to get help from your local Healthwatch service who can advise you about making a complaint. You can find details of your local Healthwatch on their website at www.healthwatch.co.uk.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Ayscoughfee Hall School The children enjoyed an exciting Autumn term with lots of trips and activities to reinforce their learning in the classroom. Year 6 had a fantastic trip to the Galleries of Justice to learn more about life in Victorian England. They experienced the lives of criminals in the very corrupt jail and then found out what it was like to be children at a very harsh reform school. They finished the trip by re-enacting a court case concerning two convicted children in an actual Victorian courtroom. Year 5, for their history topic had a magical day visiting Burghley House to experience a Tudor Christmas. To immerse themselves fully into the day they all dressed in Tudor costumes. They learned about Tudor customs and even had a surprise meeting with Henry VIII! Year 3 went further back in time by visiting the Flag Fen Centre. Here, they had the opportunity to handle Roman and Celtic artefacts as well as learning about Celtic roundhouses, traditions and customs. They

all had a great time making some wonderful “thumb” pots. Back in the classroom, the Reception class enjoyed a visit from Molsons Opticians. The children were fascinated to learn how an eye test is carried out and the equipment used as demonstrated on teddy “Sidney”. They then enjoyed designing their own glasses frames. Year 1 had a wonderful pirate day. They dressed for the occasion, learnt pirate songs, played adventure games and made puppets. The whole school took part in the remembrance of the centenary of the start of World War 1. A poignant assembly was held where parents and governors joined the children and Luke Pallister, a former pupil, returned to play the Last Post and Reville. The Year 2 children visited the Spalding Memorial and read the roll of honour out at the assembly. Each class helped to create displays and gained a fuller appreciation of the sacrifices of our soldiers in defending our freedom. Year 5 and 6

children also sold poppies to raise funds for the British Legion. The children love raising money to help others and always give generously. They wore pink and sold cakes and loom band bracelets which they had made on Pink Day, raising £348 for breast cancer. They have been making shoeboxes full of gifts to send abroad to children less fortunate as part of Operation Christmas Child and they raised a further £120 for Children in Need wearing silly ties and socks plus anything Pudsey.

St John the Baptist Primary School Weston Hills CofE Lots of parents came along to help Year 2 with their pumpkin carving in October. Some fantastic designs were created and then carved out of pumpkins! We had 2 wonderful Harvest Festival services for KS1 and KS2. Children and parents were extremely generous in their food donations for Agape Care. This charity provides food parcels to those who need support in our area. A number of sporting events have had to be cancelled this month because of poor weather and some very boggy fields!! However, on better days our children have taken part in a Tag Rugby Tournament, Hockey Tournament and Football Tournaments. Our teams train together with an external coach at lunchtimes, helping them to not only learn the skills of the games but also how to work together as a team and excellent team spirit. We are extremely proud of the children’s achievements and how well they represent our school. We raised £460 for Macmillan cancer support! What a fantastic event this was! Once again the parents of St John the Baptist Primary School did not let us down as they baked for this fantastic cause and supplied the school with the most beautiful cakes for them to sell at our Macmillan 14 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Primary School

Cancer Support Coffee Morning. Parents and Friends came along for a coffee and a chat and to hear the choir sing. A huge thank you to everyone involved, those that baked cakes, to all our helpers on the day and those who came along and supported the event. Once again this year our Friends of St Johns School held one of the only Fireworks Displays in the area. This evening is hard work for everyone involved but the joy on the faces of the children (and adults!) as the fireworks produced an amazing spectacle made it all worthwhile!

Year 6 children had a visit from St. John Ambulance and learnt about basic First Aid, and Year 5 children went to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Spalding Grammar School. We had a visit from BBC Radio Lincolnshire with Pudsey Bear during Children in Need week. A lovely surprise for the children who came in dressed as their favourite super heroes. Year 6 children will be taking part in Bikeability training this term, and our Year 5/6 children will be competing at Tag Rugby and Football tournaments organised by Agilitas. Children will have their Christmas Lunch and parties on Tuesday 16th December. Our whole school Christingle will take place on Wednesday 17th December at St. John’s Church, and our Nativity will be held on 18th in the school hall at 2.30 p.m. Our PTA continues to raise funds for us. Discos took place at the end of last term for all children, and the PTA provided refreshments for our Harvest Festival. They will be organising a Christmas Wrap for children towards the end of term, where children can purchase gifts for their family and have them wrapped ready to put under the tree! Our extra curricular activities this term include a Tag Rugby, Taiko, Recorder, Change4Life Club, Cricket, Sewing, Hockey, Hoola Hoop, Reading, Art & Choir.

Breakfast Week 2015

Breakfast Week 2015 25th – 31st January Who doesn’t love a good breakfast? The Home Grown Cereal Authority (HGCA) is here with all the best advice about breakfast

B

reakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper. It’s a well-known phrase, but do you follow it? During a busy morning, it’s easy to let breakfast fall low in your list of priorities, but taking just a few minutes to have something to eat can really make a difference to your day. If you don’t have time to eat before leaving the house, we have lots of breakfast ideas that can be eaten on-the-go or when you get to work. Breakfast provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast - that’s where its name originates, breaking the fast! Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty, like trying to start the car with no petrol! Nutritionists advise that breakfast should be eaten within two hours of waking and a healthy breakfast should provide calories in the range of 2035% of your guideline daily allowance (GDA). Apart from providing us with energy, breakfast foods are good sources of important nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins as well as protein and fibre. The body needs these essential nutrients and research shows that if these are missed at breakfast, they are less likely to be compensated for later in the day. Fruit and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals so try to include a portion of your daily five at breakfast, whether that be a banana or glass of fruit juice. Breakfast can be good for waistline too, research shows those who eat

Quirky Breakfast Facts • The celebrity people in the UK would most like to have breakfast with is Holly Willoughby • The world’s first breakfast cereal was created in 1863 and needed soaking overnight to be chewable • The world record for the most people eating breakfast in bed is 289 and was set in Sydney, Australia on 2nd March in 2012. It involved 85 queen size beds containing four people in each • The world’s largest breakfast on record involved 27,854 people and took place in Germany on 29 May 2005 • The largest bowl of porridge weighs 865 kg and was achieved in Tula, Russia on 10 September 2011

fun breakfast

facts Breakfast habits • The average person sits down to breakfast at 7.31am during the week and 8.28 am at the weekend • The nation’s favourite breakfast is a cooked breakfast, followed by porridge, breakfast cereal and then toast • The breakfast foods we are most likely to eat during the week are wholegrain cereal (37%) followed by toast with spread (32%) and then porridge (27%) • The most popular place to eat breakfast is at home at the table, either alone or with other members of the household, followed by on the sofa • Taste, speed, filling, quick to prepare and health, are the most important factors when it comes to breakfast. • There is a growing trend for eating breakfast out of the home.

Breakfast skipping • A worrying quarter (25%) of people are skipping breakfast once or more during the week, with more than one in ten (13%) never eating it • Of women who skip breakfast, 29 per cent miss it because they are too busy getting ready • 14 per cent of female breakfast skippers say they don’t eat in the morning because they are trying to lose or watch their weight • Women are more likely to prioritise their hair and choosing clothes for the day than eating breakfast.

breakfast are less likely to be overweight and more likely to be within their ideal weight range compared with breakfast skippers. If you skip breakfast, you’re more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning. Breakfast also restores glucose levels, an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function. Many studies have shown how eating breakfast can improve memory and concentration levels and it can also make us happier as it can improve mood and lower stress levels. In studies amongst children, breakfast can improve attainment, behaviour and has been linked to improved grades. Just like any other organ in the body, the brain needs energy to work at its best! People’s energy needs vary depending on activity levels and life stage but typically men require more energy than women. Growing children require a lot of energy, as an example boys aged 7-10yrs should consume approx. 1970 kcals per day, and girls aged 7-10yrs should consume approx. 1740 kcals. For adults, men require approx. 2500 kcals and women approx. 2000 kcals per day. The NHS says “Eating breakfast has long term health benefits. It can reduce obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.” Breakfast is an excellent occasion to eat together as a family when possible. Establishing good breakfast habits in childhood and maintaining them throughout adolescence may be an important factor in reducing the prevalence of breakfast skipping and developing good eating habits that last a lifetime. So, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day!

Finance Health Check

Keeping your Finances in Check The Christmas break is a great time to sit down and assess your financial situation. As well as making sure you are doing everything right, you could even save yourself some money ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“...if you have not made a Will then your possessions may not be distributed as you would have wished. If you have a partner but are not married then they do not automatically inherit from you...”

W

e all know the basic formula to staying on top of your finances – your outgoings need to be less than your incomings. Once you’ve got that sorted however, what can you do to make sure you are in the best shape financially and what can you do to protect your assets in the future. Even if you feel you have everything you need it is a good idea to regularly shop around to make sure you are receiving the best deals. If you should find yourself in debt then it is essential that you have a plan to get yourself out of it as quickly as you can. If you are unsure or finding it difficult to repay then a financial advisor is a good idea as they can sit down with you and discuss your options. They may, for example, advise you take out a loan if your debt is on a credit card as the interest rates will be a lot lower and you will get the amount paid off much faster. If it is looking likely that you are going to miss a regular payment on something like a mortgage then don’t shy away, get in touch with your lender as soon as possible. They are far more likely to want to work with you and sort something out if you speak to them than if you try to avoid them. If you don’t have debt problems then there are still things you can do to make sure you never find yourself with a bill you are unable to pay. One way of doing this is to look at your insurances. Have you got the right insurances? The right amount of cover?

20 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Buying insurance can sometimes feel like a minefield. Life insurance, buildings and contents insurance, pet insurance, car insurance, income protection, health cover, travel insurance, phone protection, the list goes on! Start by deciding which you need – make sure if you’re paying for health cover you’re not also getting the same cover as part of your job. Similarly, some bank accounts come with free travel insurance making separate purchase unnecessary. Paying twice makes absolutely no sense but can easily be done if it is small monthly amounts. Also it pays to shop around. The easiest way to do this is to visit a price comparison website. If you don’t already have a Will then you should give it some serious thought. If you are careful with your finances during your life then you may have a clear idea of who you would like to inherit any money and assets, such as a house, when you are no longer around. Unfortunately, if you have not made a Will then your possessions may not be distributed as you would have wished. If you have a partner but are not married then they do not automatically inherit from you and this may lead to them experiencing their own financial hardships down the line. Most importantly, if you have children then you need to make it clear what arrangements you would like made for them (who will care for them and how any money you leave will be used to help them for example) to avoid any unnecessary legal battles or upheaval. Finally, if you own a business, whether it is something you run part-time from home or is your main source of income then make sure you are paying the right insurances and rates – an accountant will be able to easily tell you what you should and should not be paying. If in doubt always ask a professional as although they may charge you for their time you could end up saving money long term.

Happiness & Wellbeing

Happiness & Wellbeing Make 2015 a daring year and try something new…

“Occasionally it can do you good to step outside of your comfort zone and give something new a try...”

T

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

here is a saying that if you do what you’ve always done then you’ll get what you’ve always had! Occasionally it can do you good to step outside of your comfort zone and give something new a try, whether it is a new hobby or trying out a new beauty treatment or exercise regime. Take the time to research what is available to you and explore the things that you like to do now and what you would like to try. And try and keep an open a mind as possible – you never know, you might find something new to enjoy! If you enjoy your exercise but feel you have got into a rut then you could think about your alternatives – could you start exercise classes or join a gym? There is such a huge variety out there when it comes to classes you could find yourself doing literally anything! Varying your routine can be beneficial for weight loss and toning up so doing classes which are different can be very good for you! If you have never been a member of a gym then it can seem daunting walking through the door but there will be friendly staff on hand to show you how to use equipment and weights. Staff can also give you advice on the best exercises to do to achieve your personal goals. If you have never visited a beauty therapist before then this year you can change that! You might like to go with the view of improving a part of you – it could be that you would like your nails doing, or invest in HD brows for a real wow

factor. Or you could look into visiting for relaxation purposes – everyone should work some ‘me time’ into their schedule every now and again. From a relaxing facial to a rejuvenating massage or a complementary therapy such as acupuncture or reflexology, taking some time out can help you to feel focused and refreshed. How about a new hairstyle? Changing the colour, length or style of your hair can completely change the way you look and feel about yourself. If you are thinking of something dramatic then have a good consultation session with your hairdresser. They will be able to make recommendations based on the type of hair you have as well as your skin tone and shape of your face. Listen carefully to what they propose and then it’s all about taking a deep breath and going for it! You may be very pleasantly surprised at the results! If the sum total of your hobbies are watching the TV and doing the odd crossword then you could resolve to take up a new hobby. As well as getting you out of the house you can make new friends and make a difference to those around you. You could choose a sport or an art or craft or even something like a reading group. Whatever you choose, try and be brave and pick something unlike anything you’ve tried before – you won’t know how much you might enjoy something unless you try! And remember, everyone was new to a hobby at some point and once that first session is out of the way you will be more relaxed about returning. Stick at it and above all, try and have fun!

New Year New You

Weight Management Top of most people’s New Year’s Resolutions is to lose a little (or a lot) of weight. Rather than go it alone, take advantage of these resources available to help you succeed ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

There are not many people out there who don’t indulge a little over Christmas. But when all the celebrations are over and the new year begins we sit and make a list of resolutions which we fully intend to have ticked off by the end of the year. They range from small lifestyle changes to enormous tasks (who has ever put “learn a new language” on the list? Be honest…). Sitting at the top of the list is almost always “lose weight”, “get healthier” or “exercise more”. The three of these are in many ways interconnected, and all are good for you so where do you start? A healthy diet combined with regular exercise is what we all aim for. If you don’t know where to start with your diet there are many local groups and slimming clubs who are able to help. One of the most recognised of these is Slimming World. Their generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Instead of telling you what you can and can’t eat, Food Optimising puts you in control. And this, combined with their tried and tested weight loss support system, really is a recipe for success! Slimming World’s support – online and in group – is based on a deep understanding of how you feel and a passionate desire to help you achieve your personal weight loss goals – and maintain them for life! Their Free Food list includes masses of food that you can eat in unlimited amounts. No food is banned! Enjoy your favourite treats every day and still lose weight. Another very popular weight loss system is Weight Watchers. With 50 years of success behind them they understand how to make losing weight simple, delicious and fun; You can follow their healthy eating plan completely online or benefit attend their lively meetings, for personal coaching and weight loss guidance.

No food is off limits with Weight Watchers ProPoints weight loss system. You can enjoy every day favourites like pasta and jacket potatoes, plus yummy fruits and tasty vegetables. You are also encouraged to still eat your favourite treats, like cheese and chocolate, but they promise to show you how to do this while losing weight at the same time! A diet which is growing in popularity is the Cambridge Weight Plan, which provides flexible weight management programmes for men and women. Their delicious soups, shakes, bars, vanilla rice pudding and porridge can be used as the sole source of nutrition or can be combined with conventional food for more gradual weight loss and weight management. Their nutritionally balanced programmes range from 440kcal to 1500+kcal per day. Unlike group meetings they offer friendly one-to-one support with programmes that are flexible, convenient and easy to use. Your Cambridge Consultant will motivate and encourage you throughout your weight loss journey and once you reach your target, they’ll be there to help you maintain your fantastic new look! If you are worried about your weight then before you start on any weight loss plan make sure you consult your GP. At your visit your GP or practice nurse will be able to assess whether your current weight is healthy or not. This means measuring your weight and height to calculate your body mass index (BMI).

Your BMI indicates whether you are a healthy weight for someone of your height. A healthy BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. A BMI of 25 or above means that you’re overweight. Once they know your BMI they will be able to recommend a course of action for you, using weight loss and exercise.

New Year New You

Time For Some Exercise January is a great time to start improving your fitness. The NHS recommend we take 150 minutes of exercise a week so where do you start?

W

hether you choose to take advantage of long winter walks, grab a fitness DVD or go the whole hog and join your local gym the key is to not try and do too much, too fast. If you set your targets too high then you may find yourself demotivated when you are unable to keep up your self-imposed gruelling schedule. Whilst it is good to have an overall goal in mind, see if you can divide it down into smaller goals so you will be able to see results faster and so feel the benefits sooner. Everyone is different when it comes to exercise. Some people prefer to have a workout first thing in the morning, others enjoy fitness classes after work. Many people like to exercise with a friend so it is worth having a conversation with your friends to see if you have any regular free time when you can meet up and exercise. As well as the company, your friends can help to motivate you when you really don’t feel like pulling on your exercise gear and leaving your house! Why not integrate exercise with starting a new hobby? There are many local sporting groups who are always looking for new members and they range from gentle exercise such as indoor bowls to more energetic pursuits such as cycling and squash. If you are enjoying your hobby and the exercise comes as a by-product then much the better! We are lucky to have a good selection of gyms in the area. January is a good month to join as not only will you usually find a good joining offer during this month but there are lots of others who are starting at the same time as you so you have some common ground. There are many benefits to joining a gym. Firstly there is more equipment and weights there than would ever be able to fit into your own home! The wide variety enables you to work out different

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

parts of your body and it stops your workout from becoming repetitive and boring. Another big benefit is that you will have access to fitness specialists who will be able to tailor your workout to help you achieve your goals. Some people start exercising to be fit, some to lose weight, some to change their shape. These all require different types of workout to achieve. Unless you know what each machine can offer you then it is best to get help and advice from those who do know. You can also pay for a personal trainer to get you started and to make sure you are doing the exercises in the right way to get the most benefit from them. Gym membership often comes with regular assessment so that when your fitness levels improve you can alter your workout to reflect this. A quick glance at the What’s On section at the back of the magazine shows the range of fitness classes available. From good old-fashioned Keep Fit classes to newer disciplines such as Zumba you will find classes for all ages and abilities. As well as being fun you have access to a qualified instructor who will make sure that you are exercising correctly and so avoid any injuries – there’s nothing like a pulled muscle to stop a new routine before it can get established! If nothing else, you can take advantage of the cold winter weather and wrap up warm before heading out for a long afternoon walk. It all counts as exercise and walking off a Sunday lunch will be better for you than an afternoon nap! For more information on getting your weekly exercise for low or no cost visit www.nhs. uk/livewell/fitness.

Holidays 2015

Getting Away in 2015 It’s always nice at the start of the year to sit down and plan your holidays. Whether it’s a city break, a staycation or the trip of a lifetime, having something to look forward to can be a real treat

O

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

nce the budget is all decided the fun can begin with how to spend it! Luxury 5 star all inclusive? Beach holiday, room only? Trips out or poolside? The possibilities go on and on! If you have no idea where to start then visit a travel agent. They will be able to help you narrow your search as well as tailor make a holiday which is personal to you. Rather than having to select a destination, book your flights and accommodation and trips separately you can let the agent do the hard work for you! Where possible try and use a travel agent who is a member of ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents). ABTA is the UK’s largest travel association, representing travel agents and tour operators that sell £31.5 billion of holidays and other travel arrangements each year. They currently have around 1200 members and represent around 5000 shops and offices. Once your holiday is booked you can to relax knowing know that ABTA’s Code of Conduct means that you can expect high standards from their members. You’ll also be reassured to know that all package and ‘Flight-Plus’ holidays that have been sold by ABTA members are protected financially in the event of a company failure. This means that in the unlikely event your travel company goes out of business, ABTA have a quick, clear and simple process for you to follow, so you’ll be able to continue your holiday as planned or get your money back. Well-known financial protection schemes include ABTA’s own scheme as well as ATOL which covers all flight-based packages. Many ABTA members also offer additional financial protection for services such as hotels or flights, which may not automatically be protected under a scheme. Always be sure to ask your travel company about the type of financial protection it has in place. If you decide to stay at home and holiday in the UK then you can use your travel agent or there are a host of websites you can visit to get you started. Family-friendly destinations such as Center Parcs, Hoseasons or Butlins all have regular deals and offers on their websites and bargain sites such as Travelzoo can show you the different offers in the areas you would like to travel to. If you are familiar with where you are going you can look at sites which offer holiday cottages or even hotels to check availablilty. Early trends for next year include active holidays so if cycling, surfing or golf are your thing then there will be a huge selection for you to choose from both at home and abroad. China and Japan are also high on the hot destination list with much to see and do and European city breaks are still popular.

But much like our Christmas, celebrations can begin much earlier than the actual date, sometimes as much as three weeks early. In practice though, most people in China begin celebrations a week beforehand. As well as family get togethers there are rituals and festivals to take part in as well as the giving and receiving of money. The Chinese year has an association with a different animal each year and those born in that year are said to share traits with those animals. The 12 animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. These animals appear across Chinese legend with one particular well-loved story about the Jade Emperor who set all twelve of these animals a task, with the order in which they finished determining their place in the zodiac. In case you were wondering, the Goat appears in eighth place on the zodiac. 2015 is the year of the Goat. Those born in 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and those who will be born in 2015 all fall in the year of the Goat. For people born in these years, this year is considered a lucky one for them. People born in the year of the Goat are said to have the following traits: The Goat is a lucky sign and those born in their years are well known for gentleness and kindness but they also worry. People born in the Year of Goat are elegant and highly accomplished in the arts. Goat people can be shy, pessimistic, and puzzled about life. They are always passionate about what they do and what they believe in. Goats never have to worry about having the best in life for their abilities make money for them, and they are able to enjoy

Goats are wise, gentle, and compassionate. They are compatible with Rabbits, Pigs, and Horses. The Goat can be charming company. Goats are the good Samaritans of the Chinese zodiac. They are gentle mannered and on the shy side. Being very sincere they are susceptible to a good sob story. Goat people are compassionate, understanding of others’ faults, and quick to forgive. Good fortune smiles upon the goats. Goats are family people. They never forget anyone’s birthday, and you had better not forget theirs! If you were born in the year of the Goat, does any of the above sound like you? Can you immediately recognise yourself in those descriptions? Famous ‘Goats’ include Michelangelo, Mark Twain, Muhammad Ali, Rudolph Valentino, Nicole Kidman and Matt LeBlanc. So if 2015 is your year then make sure to mark Chinese New Year in February! Funerals

Funerals Making the right choices

H

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

aving to arrange a funeral is a difficult task as there is much to do and many decisions to be taken in a short space of time. Doing this while going through the grieving process makes things that much harder. Help is on hand, though, from your funeral director who will be able to carry out your decisions and make sure that nothing is omitted or forgotten. If the person who has died did not plan their funeral in advance, for example with a pre-paid service, then you will need to begin by choosing a funeral director. You should choose a funeral director who is a member of either the National Association of Funeral Directors or the Society of Allied Funeral Directors. Both organisations have a code of practice and members must give you a price list when asked. The other big benefit of a funeral director is that they have been through this process many times and will be in a position to guide you through everything you need to do and the choices you need to make. It is sometimes easier to have someone there to help you so you have peace of mind that nothing has been left out. One of the first things you will need to do is to notify the relevant authorities and apply for a death certificate. Where possible, you should register the death within 5 days. You can go to any register office but if you use the one in the area where the person died you’ll be given the documents you’ll need on the day. Registering the death will take about half an hour. When you go you will need to take the medical certificate showing the cause of death with you. Your funeral director can advise you as to other documents you may need. Once registered you will receive a Certificate for Burial or Cremation and a Certificate of Registration of Death.

“One of the first things you will need to do is to notify the relevant authorities and apply for a death certificate. Where possible, you should register the death within 5 days.”

You will also need to notify friends and family. It is best to make a list before you begin to make sure you don’t forget anyone. Don’t underestimate the time it might take to do this as well as the emotional toll it will have on you. Make sure you have a friend on hand if possible for emotional support. Once you have done this then you need to turn your thoughts to the funeral itself. You need to decide early on a date and a time for the service. Also consider placing a death notice in the local press which will include information about the funeral as well as how people can get in touch should they wish. This is usually done through the funeral director who can then let you know who has been in touch. The funeral “Consider the director will be able to help you wishes of the with decisions about transport to and from the funeral, the decision deceased when between burial and cremation, you come to selection of a casket and liaison with a religious minister if you think about would like a religious funeral. floral Consider the wishes of the deceased when you come to think tributes.” about floral tributes. Are these to be family only or would you prefer donations to a favourite charity? Also, select hymns or songs and readings as well as who you would like to read them. Finally, arrange location and food for a reception after the funeral. Many people like to do this either at their home or the home of the deceased as it is familiar surroundings where everyone can take the time to speak with each other and remember the deceased. Others prefer to use a function room or the deceased’s favourite pub or restaurant.

To Move or Improve

To Move or To Improve? Two options which need carefully weighing up – should you move house or stay put and alter where you are?

W

ith the usual New Year’s resolutions often come the bigger decisions regarding work and home. It’s as if the clock has reset and people begin to reflect on their situation. If living arrangements feature on the list then it is worth weighing up the pros and cons of moving house. Moving house offers the benefits of having somewhere larger (or smaller if you feel it is the right time to downsize) as well as not having to co-ordinate all of the work yourself (services such as Estate Agents, Solicitors and Surveyors will do much of the work for you). If you decide to stay where you are and make some home improvements then there could potentially be more disruption (depending on the type of changes you are making) but the big benefit is that you can do everything to your specifications and so will end up with exactly what you want. There are some relatively small changes you can make which will improve your home. The first is to change your windows. By updating your windows not only will they make a difference to the outside appearance of your home but you may also reap the benefits in terms of your heating bills coming down. Having a porch put in can also help with your heating bills. If you are looking for more space then an extension might be the way forward. A ground floor or a garage conversion will cause the least amount of disruption to your daily routines. Depending on how far out you want to extend you may not need planning permission. If you

“...updating your windows not only will they make a difference to the outside appearance of your home but you may also reap the benefits in terms of your heating bills coming down.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

are planning on something on a grander scale then it is a good idea to get an architect involved from the early planning stages. Make sure you get someone who knows the area well as they will be familiar with local planning regulations and be more likely to get planning permission approved first time which will be more cost effective for you. Having an architect will also ensure that you get the best use from your space and there will be no problems uncovered by your builder when they are half way down the line! If an extension is a real possibility then make sure you investigate two storey extensions as well as sometimes they can be just as economical – doubling the space will not necessarily mean doubling the price. There is also the option to convert your loft space which, while it is expensive, can give you a huge space to play with. Not every loft will convert though so it is worth doing your homework before you decide on doing this. You can also look at converting smaller bedrooms into ensuite rooms which could make mornings a lot easier! If this all sounds like a lot of hard work then you can always start by having a good clear out and maybe calling a decorator. New wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint can transform a room. Also take a look at your floors – new carpet, lino or wooden floors can give your house a lift. You could also speak to an electrician and update your lighting as this can also make a huge impact. Whether your improvements are large or small, doing them can make a large difference to you in both the short term and the long term as when you come to sell your house down the line, making the right improvements can add value to your home’s value. Pets Corner

The Joys Of Winter Anyone who has seen a dog running through snow or licking frost will appreciate they like nothing more than a chilly day. Hot days make our pets sluggish, but chilly days perk them up; even oldies like to get in on the action Keep Warm! Running will make a dog hot, but as they cool down the chilly wind can make them shiver; try a dog coat to keep the cold out. Avoid rivers too, because they can be sub-zero and your wet dog will become gradually colder as the walk progresses. Iced over rivers are dangerous, never let your dog onto the ice, it may break and your dog can be swept underneath. Be Careful Out There! Whilst we’re talking about dangers – make sure anti-freeze is locked away. It’s poisonous, and kills pets within hours if they ingest it. Anti-freeze tastes sweet, which is a big attraction for animals. Salt and grit on icy roads and pavements can cut foot-pads and get stuck between toes, so wipe your dog’s feet after a walk to prevent sore cuts. Stop them licking at the salt on their feet too, as it creates excessive thirst.

Dark mornings and early nights are a perennial winter feature. Invest in hi-vis so you’re safely seen. Hi-vis dog coats are a good investment, and you can also buy a flashing collar tag ! Don’t forget your torch on winter walks. Even a mini torch that fits in your pocket is better than nothing if you get caught out. Wrap Up Hutches Pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs need extra warmth. Make sure their bedding is dry, and to reduce the wind chill factor during windy or cold spells cover the front of the hutch with sacking or towels. Remove ice from bowls daily, and ensure any hanging drinkers are not frozen solid. Frozen Fish You can’t knit a bobble hat for your fish during cold spells, but you can keep the pond clear of leaves, as they raise ammonia levels. To prevent pond ice place a ball in the water. Logs at the bottom of the pond can provide warm spots for them, or you can buy a pond heater to prevent the surface

New Ford Focus Ford has crafted a more sophisticated and advanced Focus with a redesign to reflect the One Ford global design language.

A

vailable in five -door and estate body styles, the new Focus has a lower, wider stance, with a new bonnet, front fascia and grille. The bonnet is sculpted with a dynamic shape from the front pillar to the corners of the upper part of the inverted trapezoidal grille to deliver a strong, proud look. Slimmer; chiselled front headlamps and elongated fog-lamps add to the bolder front end. Subtle chrome details add to the feeling of elegance while the rear of the car also is sleeker with a new fascia and tailgate arrangement, as well as thinner tail lamps. When redesigning the interior of the new Focus, Ford obviously listened to customer feedback and responded with a more intuitive layout, complemented by a steering wheel and central stack with fewer controls and switches. The new black satin trim and chrome detailing contribute to a cleaner, more modern look. The redesigned centre storage console offers more space as well as a new sliding, integrated armrest. The adjustable console accommodates a variety of bottles and cups with the capacity to hold a one-litre water bottle and a 0.4-litre cup simultaneously. The new Focus offers fuel efficiency improvements of up to 15 per cent compared with the outgoing model, and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions across the range. The fresh Focus will continue to offer a 99 g/km CO2 100PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY engine variant, the previous version of which recently became the first non-hybrid petrol family car in Europe to achieve sub100 g/km CO2 emissions. As well as that, the new Focus also will be offered with Ford’s new fuel-efficient 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, with a new six-speed automatic gearbox. When mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, the engine will deliver a seven per cent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the outgoing 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that offered equivalent power. It will also be offered for the first time with Ford’s 1.5-litre TDCi diesel, available with 95PS or 120PS, and a 10 per cent fuel efficiency improvement compared to the 1.6-litre engine it replaces. The 150PS 2.0-litre TDCi model with sixspeed manual gearbox will deliver a 15 per cent improvement over the previous 140PS model. Ford engineers have delivered a more solid, responsive and connected-to-the-road feel by increasing the structural stiffness at the front, revising the suspension geometry, increasing lateral stiffness of “steeringrelevant” suspension bushes, and retuning the shock absorbers. The Electric Power Assisted Steering has been re-tuned to make you feel even more connected to the road. Ford’s industry-first Enhanced Transitional Stability system monitors vehicle speed and your steering input to predict a loss of traction before it actually happens and triggers Electronic

Stability Control sooner to enhance safety and help deliver smoother journeys. The new Focus will also be available with paddle-shifters that enable you to control gear changes while keeping your hands on the steering wheel. Paddle-shift controls will be available as an option with all automatic and PowerShift transmissions, diesel and petrol. The highly acclaimed driving experience is further refined with improvements to noise, vibration and harshness that help deliver best-in-class levels of interior quietness in the Focus, and contribute to a more relaxing and stress-free environment. With enhanced handling and steering, the new Focus takes the model’s classleading driving dynamics and acclaimed fun-to-drive DNA to a new level. www.carwriteups.co.uk Tweeting: @carwriteups SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |
