to the March issue
Well February was certainly the month of high winds! The weekend storm Ciara hit we were away in Bury St Edmunds and so had to battle through Thetford Forest to get home – it was a nerve-wracking drive! We were lucky at home we just have had to repair a fence and replace a couple of roof tiles but saw the damage it has caused elsewhere. This school year is whizzing by, I can’t believe we are already halfway through the year but I have to be honest…I am looking forward to better weather and the longer holidays that Easter and summer promise us. In this issue we look at how your options when it comes to childcare, how to ensure your eyes are in tip-top condition and show you how to whip up a storm in the kitchen for mother’s day. We also look at flowers for a wedding and what their meanings are as well as how to accessorise your bathroom. And finally find out how Otis keeps busy with a car wash visit and a shopping trip to the pet shop as well as Tim test drives the Astra Hatchback. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Jerry Green Dog Rescue welcomes new ‘Ambassadog’ to the team Jerry Green Dog Rescue has teamed up with the coolest Chihuahua in town to raise awareness about the dog’s they have available and how you can support the charity. Chewie, who is a 2-year-old Instagram influencer by day and snuggle bunny by night, has decided with support from his Mum Mina, to help out his furry friends at his local centre in Nottingham and those in the charities 4 other centres by spreading the word about what the charity does, how to adopt a rescue dog, their events and much more. Mina said: “We’re really excited to work with Jerry Green Dog Rescue! It means a lot to myself and Chewie to support our local community and if we can do that by helping rescue dogs find their forever homes then we are on board. “Chewie has over 60,000 followers on his Instagram page and has hundreds of fans from across the world – so we hope that our influence
will not only raise awareness about the charity and the services they offer, but will also raise the vital funds they need to continue the great work they do.” Charlotte Todd, Marketing Coordinator for Jerry Green Dog Rescue said: “We cannot wait to work alongside Mina and Chewie – their influence and support will really help put our centres on the map and promote the other services we offer like our grooming, training at some of our centres and the paddock hire we have available at all of our centres.” Not only will Chewie be helping the charity through his online presence, he is also going to be attending the charities large events and will be trying out some of their services. You can keep up to date on what he is up to and how he is supporting the rescue on the Jerry Green Dog Rescue channels and on Chewie’s own accounts. Follow them both using the handles below:

Are you or someone you know living with a Cancer diagnosis? A new piece of patient experience work is being carried out to better understand what it’s like for people to live in the community with a cancer diagnosis. We are encouraging the community to share as many personal experiences as possible to influence and improve our local cancer support. This piece of work is supported by the East Midlands Cancer Alliance in partnership with Macmillan and Health Education England, its findings will feed directly into the Lincolnshire Living with and Beyond Cancer project. The Life And Times Of Dire Straits If you want a show that delivers on every level this is it. John Illsley’s ‘Life and Times of Dire Straits’ is not just ‘an evening with’ with a bit of chat and the odd anecdote, it’s much, much more...his new show has everything. Of course there is chat and stories, plenty of it – and who doesn’t want to know about life in one of the most famous bands the world’s ever known - but there’s double bubble even here. John is interviewed by one of Dire Straits’ old managers, Paul Cummins, who has his own take on the good old days himself. Indeed he often throws the odd curveball… “It’s extraordinary what Paul remembers” says John “talk about keeping me on my toes, and every show seems to throw up something different!” Then there’s the music. Unlike many of the aforementioned ‘talking’ evenings John also provides music. Along with three members of his own band he swings acoustically through some of Dire Straits’ biggest hits and some of his own music as well. (And fantastic it sounds too.) John Illsley first took his ‘Life and Times of Dire Straits’ on the road last year. It played across nationwide venues, even taking in Glastonbury Festival, and proved such a rip-roaring success that he’s doing it again this March. (Full list of dates as below.)
Of course he is a musician well placed to talk about life on the road and what it means to be in a band. A founder member and long-time bass player of Dire Straits, John Illsley was a major part of one of the biggest bands of all time. They sold well over 100 million albums, spent 1,100 weeks on the UK album charts alone and received countless awards including four Grammies and three Brits as well as an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So John knows exactly what it takes to be starting out, what it’s like when you’ve arrived and what a rollercoaster it all can be. And to compliment the touring activity he recently released a highly acclaimed new album ‘Coming up for Air’ featuring his trademark style and distinctive vocals. ‘The Life and Times of Dire Straits’ sees John sharing some of his history and some of his music all on the one evening. A fascinating eye-opener with some wonderful songs, this is a show that provides an utterly entertaining and unique night out. A complete treat for anyone remotely interested in music. Value for money indeed! Kicking off on March 11th, ‘The Life and Times of Dire Straits’ will visit Spalding at the South Holland centre on March 27th. Tickets are on sale now available from the box office at The South Holland Centre.
Lincolnshire charity LIVES is celebrating 50 years of responding to 999 emergencies and helping to save the lives of thousands of patients across the county. To help mark this milestone, LIVES Chief Executive, Nikki Cooke and Medical Director, Dr Simon Topham, are taking on a ‘stroll-a-thon’, aiming to dance 50,000 steps in a day for the ‘Stroll for your LIVES’ event. The event, which will take place on Saturday 28th March at Hubberts Bridge Community Centre in Boston, is in collaboration with Boston Jive with founder, Claire Seabrook, also taking on the challenge. The challenge will involve Nikki, Simon, Claire and anyone who wishes to join them to ‘stroll’ 50,000 steps in a single day. Stroll dancing became popular in the 1950s and is a form of line dancing with no partner needed. In a 45 minute stroll class you will typically reach about 5,000 steps, so their 50,000 step target will require a full day of dancing.
Nikki Cooke, CEO of LIVES, said: “LIVES turning 50 is such an achievement and something Lincolnshire should be proud to celebrate. LIVES has come a long way since it started in 1970 but the core principles and passion remains the same. Taking on 50,000 steps in a day through stroll dancing is no mean feat but we’re looking forward to having fun and raising awareness of LIVES and the great work our army of Community First Responders and Medics do across Lincolnshire.” Claire Seabrook, founder of Boston Jive, added: “We at Boston Jive are so proud to show our support for LIVES. We are extremely lucky to have this incredible service here in Lincolnshire and long may it continue! Hopefully our challenge will help raise more awareness as well as raise money for LIVES. We would love everyone to come along and join in, whether it’s one of the smaller challenges, the full 50,000 or for an hour or two of dance. We may ache the next day but I’m sure it will be worth it!”

Advice
What It Might Mean For You The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, although there are some steps to be taken before the deal is final. The UK and EU will then have until 31 December 2020 to agree the new rules of how they work together. This means your rights will stay the same until 31 December 2020 - there are no immediate changes. New advice will be published to help you understand any changes when they’re announced and existing advice will be updated. If you’re an EU citizen, you need to apply for an immigration status to continue living in the UK. You need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to keep living, working, studying, getting benefits and using NHS services in the UK after 31 December 2020. It’s free to apply. Your family members should apply too, if they’re not British or Irish citizens. If you’re a citizen of the EU, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you will need to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme. It’s worth applying for the settlement scheme now - it can take time for your application to be processed. You’ll need to apply even if: • you’ve been living in the UK for a while - it

doesn’t matter how long you’ve been here, you’ll still need to apply • you already have a right to reside in the UK and a document proving this, for example a permanent residence document • you were born in the UK but are not a British citizen - sometimes being born here doesn’t mean you automatically have citizenship You don’t need to apply if you’re also a British citizen. You may be asked to prove your right to live and/or work in the UK. If you’re doing things like applying for a job or renting a home, you can continue to use your passport or national ID card. You can also use your passport or national ID card to enter and re-enter the UK. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t applied for the EU Settlement Scheme yet. If you are challenged on your right to work in the UK, this may be discrimination. For further information on this issue, please consult one of the contact avenues listed below. If you want to bring your family to the UK, your family members need to be in the UK by 31 December 2020 to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme. Ayscoughfee Hall School
Spalding Grammar School It has been a busy start to the school term at Spalding Grammar School. Success added up for three sixth formers from Spalding Grammar School invited to test themselves in a national maths challenge. Forty four students from Years 12 and 13 took part in the annual Senior Mathematics Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust. Head of mathematics Emma Davison said: “The results were very pleasing with a number of students obtaining bronze, silver and gold certificates.” Most notable were gold certificate recipients George Smith, Wojciech Such and Oliver Harrison (also best in school), placing them within the top five per cent of all entries. These three students also took part in the Senior Kangaroo, a national competition which is invite-only for the top two per cent of entries. All did well again and received further certificates. Members of a newly-formed creative writing club at the school have had some early success in a national competition. Nine students have had poetry published in a book called Through Their Eyes. The competition for 11 to 18-year-olds, run by Peterborough firm Young Writers, attracted more than 10,000 entries. Entrants were encouraged to use imagination and creativity and write from someone or something else’s perspective. Spalding Grammar students

English tutor Chloe Barratt said: “The Creative Writing Club was formed at the beginning of this school year and has been growing in popularity ever since. “I am so pleased that we already have students achieving so much after this small period of time. We already have more students being published after another national competition and I expect that our successes will only continue.” Copies of Through Their Eyes are available to buy via the school.

The new term at Ayscoughfee Hall School started with great excitement as the Juniors travelled to Birmingham to take part in the 2020 Young Voices concert. Together with literally thousands of children from around the country and professional musicians and singers they performed a wide ranging repertoire of songs from musicals, pop hits and songs from other cultures. Sport also got off to a
good start with a number of children taking part in the Independent Schools Association Cross Country Competition in Suffolk. Reception children began their new topic ‘Fur, Feathers and Fangs’ with a visit from staff…and animals….from Riverside Veterinary Clinic. The tragic fires in Australia have prompted one of their pupils to organise a cake sale to raise funds to support those affected and we are looking forward to that!

Mini Police
Mini Police schools across the county have been busy with a wide variety of topics, with schools electing to link in with their curriculums. With Internet Safety Day on 11th February, and British Science week in March, some of our schools have been running our Digital Resilience and Crime Scene Investigation topics. In both Boston and Spalding areas, schools have been learning about Digital Resilience. In this topic we encourage children to look at their online activity, what their responsibilities are when posting online (something that is equally as relevant to adults as children), what Cyberbullying is (and how/why it happens), and most importantly how to keep our private information private. We discuss online family agreements – and especially how both children and parents have responsibilities and rules to abide by. How many adults would admit they spend too much time on their phones? Who has devices or phones at the dinner table (one I am guilty of on far too many occasions!). Our program is not meant to discourage online use but to encourage children to think about what they are posting, what apps they are using and how to keep themselves safe online. We also get a little insight into what games/ apps are popular which helps not only us but teachers to be aware of current trends. It also gives us an opportunity to highlight the issues around many of the popular apps and to remind children how to use them safely. Our PCSOs have been busy delivering lessons to some big
groups, with several schools working with whole year groups and classes to learn about Scams and also our Diversity topic. We’ve heard some great debates around diversity and stereotypes – we have been showing children videos of people in Lincolnshire and asking them to guess their jobs, favourite colours and hobbies based purely on their introductions. We’ve searched out people who do non gender-stereotypical roles – from male hairdressers to female mechanics and racing drivers – and we encourage children to think ‘outside of the box’ when guessing. We want children to understand not to ‘take things at face value’. We have been discussing areas of our lives where gender stereotypes still exist – from sports to careers – it’s amazing how the gender barriers of past generations have all but disappeared, and it is enlightening to listen to the career aspirations of the next generation. We end with what we think is a great message – ‘The only person who can limit your achievements is you’. We’ve also welcomed a new school to our Mini Police program – Gosberton House Academy. They are a primary school catering for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or additional learning needs from across Lincolnshire. We have tailored our program to ensure we deliver the best package to them – we look forward to showing the wok we are doing with them in future articles.

ell! What a lively Labrador I am! As soon as my human returns from dropping the person puppies at training school, I’ve been demanding an outing. Of an hour – minimum! And when we return, do I have a snooze? Not likely! I shadow her while she sees to the housework, her writing work and searching for lost homework. Which I don’t think I ate… When it’s time for a tea break, she pours a brew into my bowl and settles down with her phone. ‘Checking your e-tails?’ I nudge, dribbling on her knee. ‘Emails, doggo, and do you have to lick my screen?’ She puts her phone down, out of my reach, and picks up a pen. Which I start to gnaw on. ‘Oats! How am I supposed to write a shopping list?’ ‘Shopping! Brilliant! I need chews, biscuits and a new toy!’ I bark, racing to the front door. She takes me to the

Childcare options
Family Life
Choosing the right childcare can be a daunting task. This guide takes you through the different options think about which ones suit your family’s needs and budget best. Registered childminder What is it? Someone who looks after children in their own home and is registered with one of the following: • Ofsted (England) • Care Inspectorate (Scotland) • Care and Social Services Inspectorate (Wales) • Health and Social Services Trust (Northern Ireland) Pros and cons • They’re self-employed, so you don’t have to worry about paying their tax or National Insurance (NI) contributions. • As long as they’re registered, you may be eligible for help to pay for your childcare using Tax-Free Childcare, or to claim back up to 85% of the monthly childcare if you’re eligible for Universal Credit, or to use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit. • Many childminders work flexible hours and pick up/drop off children at school or playgroup. • You can use your free weekly childcare allowance if your child is three or four. • You’ll need to make other arrangements if they’re ill or on holiday. Day nursery What is it? Care and education for children aged six weeks to five years. They might be run privately or by community organisations, local authorities or employers. Pros and cons • They’re typically open weekdays from 8am to 6pm, which fits most working hours. • Nursery fees are sometimes subsidised by local authorities or employers. • You can use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit to help with the cost. • You can use your free weekly childcare allowance if your child is three or four. • They’re usually more expensive than
childminders • You usually have to pay the fees when you’re on holiday.
sessions for three to five year-olds. They typically offer three-hour morning or afternoon sessions during term time.
Nanny What is it? Someone who looks after a child in its own home. It’s usually a live-in or daily role, but parttime nannies are also available. Nannies can voluntarily register with Ofsted.
Pros and cons • A low-cost option • As long as they’re registered, you can use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit. • You can use your free weekly childcare allowance if your child is three or four. • You’ll need to find alternative childcare to cover the school holidays and/or the rest of the day.
Pros and cons • Your child is cared for at home. • As long as they’re registered, you can use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit. • You’ll be their employer, and responsible for paying their Income Tax and NI contributions. • As an employer, automatic enrolment means you’ll have to pay into a pension for your nanny if they earn more than £192 a week (£833 a month) before tax. • You’ll need to make other arrangements if they’re ill or on holiday. Au pair What is it? Someone who lives with you and learns the local language and culture while providing around 30 hours’ childcare and help around the home. Pros and cons • They’re paid ‘pocket money’ so the costs are much lower than other childcare options • They’re usually treated like a member of the family rather than an employee so you won’t have to deal with their tax or NI. • You can’t use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit. • You’ll need to factor in the cost of their room and board on top of what you pay them. Playgroup or pre-school What is it? Community and voluntary-run care and education
Family or friends What is it? Having a family member or friend look after your child, either for free, payment or an arrangement where you look after each other’s children (known as ‘reciprocal childcare’). This might seem like a convenient and affordable option, but the rules around these kinds of arrangements can be complex. Pros and cons • A family member doesn’t have to be registered with Ofsted if they’re providing childcare free of charge. • Legally, you can’t use a friend to regularly look after a child under eight for more than two hours a day during normal working hours - unless they’re a registered childminder. This is something to think about if you have a reciprocal childcare arrangement. • If you pay a family member or friend for childcare, you can’t use childcare vouchers or claim the childcare element of Working Tax Credit or Universal Credit unless they’re a registered childminder and look after at least one other unrelated child. Whatever option you choose juggling childcare both financially and practically can be hard work so do not rush into a decision and make sure you visit all settings to gauge how you feel about them. This will allow you to make an informed choice. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 19
Health & Beauty
Eye Infections Many of us will experience one of these common eye infections during our lifetime but some small, simple hygiene changes can reduce your risk significantly. Conjunctivitis/pink eye Infectious conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is one of the most common eye infections. It happens when blood vessels in the conjunctiva, the thin outermost membrane surrounding your eyeball, become infected by bacteria or a virus. As a result, your eyes become pink or red, and inflamed. It can also result from allergies or exposure to chemicals, like chlorine, in swimming pools. Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria or virus is extremely contagious. You can still spread it up to two weeks after the infection starts. Take note of any of the following symptoms and see your doctor as soon as possible for treatment: • reddish or pinkish tint to your eyes • watery discharge from your eyes that’s thickest when you wake up • itchiness or feeling like there’s something constantly in your eyes • producing more tears than usual, especially in only one eye You’ll likely need the following treatments depending on which type of conjunctivitis you have: Bacterial: Antibiotic eye drops, ointments, or oral medications to help kill bacteria in your eyes. After starting antibiotics, symptoms fade in a couple of days. Viral: No treatment exists. Symptoms tend to fade after 7 to 10 days. Apply a clean, warm, wet cloth to your eyes to relieve discomfort, wash hands frequently, and avoid contact with others. Allergic: Over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines help relieve allergy symptoms. Antihistamines can be taken as eye drops, and anti-inflammatory eye drops can also help with symptoms. Keratitis Infectious keratitis happens when your cornea gets infected. The cornea is the clear layer that covers your pupil and iris. Keratitis results from either an infection (bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic) or an eye injury. Keratitis means swelling of the cornea and isn’t always infectious. Symptoms of keratitis can include:
20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
• redness and swelling in your eye eye pain or discomfort • producing more tears than usual or an abnormal discharge • pain or discomfort when you open and close your eyelids • loss of some vision or blurry vision • light sensitivity • sensation of having something stuck in your eye You’re more likely to develop keratitis if: • you wear contact lenses • your immune system is weak from another condition or illness • you live somewhere that’s humid and warm • you use corticosteroid eyedrops for an existing eye condition • your eye is injured, especially by plants with chemicals that can get into your eye See your doctor as soon as possible to stop the infection if you notice any keratitis symptoms. Some treatments for keratitis include: Bacterial. Antibacterial eye drops can usually clear up a keratitis infection in a few days. Oral antibiotics are typically used to treat more severe infections. Fungal. You’ll need antifungal eye drops or medication to kill the fungal organisms causing your keratitis. This can take weeks to months. Viral. There’s no way to eliminate a virus. Oral antiviral medications or eyedrops can help stop the infection in a few days up to a week. Viral keratitis symptoms may later return even with treatment. Endophthalmitis Endophthalmitis is severe inflammation of the inside of your eye resulting from a bacterial or fungal infection. Candida fungal infections are the most common cause of endophthalmitis. This condition can happen after certain eye surgeries, such as cataract surgery, although this is rare. It may also happen after your eye is penetrated by an object. Some symptoms to watch out for, especially after surgery or an eye injury, include: • mild to severe eye pain • partial or complete vision loss • blurry vision
• redness or swelling around the eye and eyelids • eye pus or discharge • sensitivity to bright lights Treatment depends on what causes the infection and how severe it is. First, you’ll need antibiotics injected directly into your eye with a special needle to help stop the infection. You may also receive a corticosteroid shot to relieve inflammation. If something has gotten into your eye and caused the infection, you’ll need to get it removed right away. Seek emergency medical attention in these cases — never try to remove an object from your eye by yourself. After antibiotics and object removal, your symptoms can begin to get better in a few days. Sty A sty (also called a hordeolum) is a pimple-like bump that develops from an oil gland on the outer edges of your eyelids. These glands can get clogged with dead skin, oils, and other matter and allow bacteria to overgrow in your gland. The resulting infection causes a sty. Sty symptoms include: • pain or tenderness • itchiness or irritation • swelling • producing more tears than usual • crustiness around your eyelids • increased tear production Some treatments for sties include: • applying a clean, warm, damp cloth to your eyelids for 20 minutes at a time a few times a day • using mild, scent-free soap and water to clean your eyelids • taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), to help with pain and swelling • stopping use of contact lenses or eye makeup until the infection goes away using antibiotic ointments to help kill the infectious overgrowth See your doctor if the pain or swelling gets worse, even with treatment. A sty should disappear in about 7 to 10 days. If it doesn’t, ask your doctor about other possible treatments.

Donington St Mary and the Holy Rood The Church of St Mary and the Holy Rood in Donington Lincolnshire is a great landmark is a great tribute to the medieval builders. The True glory of this church is the 14th century tower with a spire rising more than 160 feet. The tower has garbled buttresses climbing to the battlements and its base forms the porch. We are told that the oldest parts of the church is the east wall where two doors, one each side of the altar, but now bricked up perhaps indicate the existence of an early relic room. The beautiful 15th centrury window above the High Altar was filled in stained glass in the late nineteenth century and shows the Ascension of Christ. The Nave is very spacious and has plain clerestory
windows above a colonnade of seven arches each side. The Porch at the base of the tower houses the doorway above which is a figure of Our Lord pointing to the wound in his side. The floor is inscribed in memory of the Glled Family. On the outside wall it is just possible to see the remains of two scratch dials. Although the first bell was hung in early 1529 it was not until 1953 that a complete octave was achieved with the introduction of two new trebles. Among the many memorials is one of real interest to Captain Mathew Flinders. Flinders had a short but amazing life, first as a young sailor on the Bounty under Bligh, the mutiny was well past, and subsequently on his own command he surveyed much of the Australian Coast.

The Meaning Behind Your A perfect way to personalise your wedding is to choose flowers for your bouquet and floral arrangements that hold specific meanings in the language of flowers. When your guests step into a venue for the first time, the sight and scent of beautiful blooms are one of the first things they notice. And while the colour and shape of your chosen flora is important, a magical touch for your big day is to choose flowers that have specific historical associations, providing an added layer of meaningfulness to your wedding celebrations. By using the language of flowers, you can communicate emotions and feelings of love on your special day. What is the Language of Flowers? Although finding symbolism in nature has been a part of human culture for centuries, it was the Victorians who first began crafting an emotive language out of flowers, expressing the feelings through bouquet gifting when words and gestures failed. The popularity of floriography, or the language of flowers, in the late 1800s saw the publication of flower dictionaries and a trend in sending secretive messages to lovers through floral gifts. Today, the London Flower School suggests that a floral arrangement can convey “themes and motifs”, as well as “emotional content and a range of meanings” from its composition. We’ve researched a selection of the most popular wedding flowers and their meaning to find out which blooms will add a magical message to your big day… Roses The classic wedding flower of the
rose has different meanings when used in an arrangement, depending on the colour you pick. White roses, a popular bouquet choice, stand for purity, innocence and youthfulness, while red roses represent love, passion and beauty. Light or dusty pink petals are said to mean admiration, gentleness and grace and peachcoloured blooms suggest sincerity and gratitude. Roses also have a complex symbolism dependent upon how they are represented. The gift of a singular red rose on a wedding day is, according to Victorian tradition, a depiction of utmost devotion, while two roses entwined together can be interpreted as a floral illustration of marriage. Watch out if you’re future partner comes home clutching thirteen roses in a bouquet, however – it’s said to be the gift of a secret admirer! Sweet Pea (Lathyrus) The homely sweet pea, with its rich fragrance and array of tones to suite any wedding colour scheme, is a firm bouquet favorite, inspiring thoughts of country weddings and delicate girliness. According to George Rouledge & Sons’ 1888 dictionary The Artistic Language of Flowers, this twopetalled flower symbolises the initial enjoyment of delicate pleasures, fitting for a bride’s bouquet. Lily of the Valley (Convallaria) According to The Artistic Language of Flowers, Lily of the Valley symbolises the return of happiness. This beautiful little plant was chosen

by Kate Middleton for her wedding day bouquet because of its secondary meaning as well – trustworthiness. Freesia Named by botanist Christian P. Ecklon after his friend Friedrich Freese, these sweetly scented blooms represent friendship, trust and honesty. They’re a beautiful addition to any wedding arrangements, representing the intimate trust a couple places in each other on their special occasion and the importance of friendship within a marriage. Peony Peonies can have different meanings, depending on their colour, and both meanings stem from ancient Greek mythology… In the first, legend has it that Paeon, the Greek physician of the Gods, was a student of the god of
medicine Aesculapius. When Paeon successfully used a peony root to heal Pluto, Aesculapius became jealous of his apprentice’s talents and tried to kill him. To save the doctor, Pluto transformed Paeon into a peony, cementing one meaning of the beautiful bloom – compassion. However, in a darker myth, the peony is linked to a nymph called Paeonia. The beautiful and attractive creature attracted the attention of Apollo. When Paeonia realized that the Greek god Aphrodite was watching them, she became bashful and blushed red. In anger and jealousy, Aphrodite transformed the nymph into a red peony. Today, a red peony symbolises bashfulness and timidity. Ranunculus The Artistic Language of Flowers suggests that ranunculus symbolises the receiver being “radiant with
r Chosen Wedding Flowers charms” and “rich in attractions”. These ruffled, bold blooms come in a variety of colours from elegant whites and pinks to fiery reds and golds. The etymological meaning of the various blooms that come under the name ‘ranunculus’ is thought to be a combination of two Latin words: rana meaning frog and unculus meaning little. The story goes that the flower earned its name when it grew plentifully along streams during the summer months.
dye and medicine, but today its heady fragrance and bright, voluptuous blooms have made it a popular choice for table arrangements at weddings. The intoxicating perfume of this velvety soft flower can sometimes be overpowering, so if you’re featuring them in your wedding day, it’s an idea to only include a couple per arrangement. Originating from Asia, in Japanese and Chinese cultures, these flowers symbolise peace and calmness.
Legend has it that an emperor supposedly gave hydrangeas to a woman he loved as an apology for neglecting her when his duties as a ruler took up his attention.
Stephanotis The delicate white flowers of Stephanotis can look strikingly stunning in a simple bouquet. The elegant trumpet flowers of this Madagascan plant are said to symbolise marital happiness, making them a perfect addition to any floral arrangement on your special day.
Hydrangea The trusty Hydrangea fell out of favour as a wedding flower for a long time, but as with all fashions, its bulbous sprays of tightlypacked blooms are starting to see a renaissance amongst wedding florists. And the Flowers You Might Want Although the robust flowers of to Avoid ads.qxp_Layout 1 10/10/2018 Page 9 this plant were negatively viewed by Some flowers have10:09 negatives

Victorians, who associated them with frigidity and boasting, in their native Japan, they represent gratitude.
Baby’s Breath (Gysophila) Delicate sprigs of Baby’s Breath add a touch of romance to any bouquet, headdress or arrangement they are tucked into. This elegant flower is most commonly seen in white, but you can also find pink and pale yellow varieties. Gysophila has two meanings in the language of flowers. Firstly, as with many wedding blooms, it symbolises innocence. But it also represents fertility and is frequently given within a bouquet at the birth of a child.
associations, so you might want to stay clear of them on your big day to avoid tempting fate.
The delicate blooms of Begonia have a decidedly darker meaning than you might think: they are said to symbolise a warning to be cautious. And be careful who you give them to! The Victorians often gifted begonias to symbolize dark, fanciful thoughts about the receiver. Hyacinths might be beautiful, but you’re more likely to see them at a funeral than a wedding. These statuesque blooms have been linked to the tragic myth of Hyacinthus in Greek mythology. According to legend, Hyacinthus was a lover of the god Apollo but was also admired by Zephyrus, the god of Wind. The friendship between Apollo and Hyacinthus enraged Zephyrus, who used the wind to throw a discus Hyacinthus was playing with off course, hitting the mortal and killing him. From the spilled blood, sprang a hyacinth bloom. The plant now symbolises sincerity (on Hycinthus’ behalf), but also jealously and rashness.

How to Surprise Your Mum on Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is coming up, and you want to make your mum feel appreciated. You can give her a gift, make her a meal, help out around the house, write her a note, or take her on a day trip. The important thing is that your surprise comes from the heart. It does not need to be expensive or complicated, but it should be thoughtful. Think about what your mum would appreciate. Buy her a gift Buy her something that you know she’s always wanted, or find something that you know she will like. Try to buy something special that she wouldn’t necessarily buy for herself. You don’t need to break the bank with an expensive gold necklace. The important thing is that your gift is thoughtful and makes her feel appreciated. • If you can’t think of a specific item that she wants or needs, try to think of something that plays on her interests. If she likes to garden, give her a packet of seeds, or buy her a potted plant that she can replant in her garden. If she likes dark chocolate, buy her a bar of quality chocolate.
• If you don’t want to buy her one expensive gift, try putting together a small gift basket of her favourite things. A bottle of wine, a bar of chocolate, a bouquet of flowers. Even if the individual items aren’t very expensive, she will appreciate the thought that you put into choosing her favourite things. Make her a gift Paint her a painting, write her a poem, carve her something out of wood, or arrange photos of the two of you together into a collage. You won’t have to spend much money, and she will appreciate your gift all the more if you make it specifically for her. Don’t be afraid to get creative.[1]
• Make her a mix-CD. Make her a card. Make her a thoughtful video and post it to YouTube or Facebook. Make her a picture-frame, a flip-book, a t-shirt, or a portrait. • Make her a found-object sculpture that she can put in her garden. Make her a coffee mug, a bowl, or a vase out of fired clay. Carve and polish a cutting board out of a unique piece of wood. If she loves the beach, give her a mason jar full of shells that you collected. Make a special Mother’s Day meal Cook her favourite foods for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Consider serving her breakfast in bed for a classic Mother’s Day treat. Make the meal, set the table, and clean up
afterward. • If you aren’t confident in the kitchen, look up recipes online. Ask a sibling, a friend, or another family member for help. • Consider making her sweet treats. Cookies, brownies, muffins—whatever she likes. Make a nice basket with a Mother’s Day card. Consider decorating the treats with her favourite things. If she loves the beach, for example, you might decorate cupcakes with ocean-themed frosting: crabs, palm trees, dolphins, starfish. • If you don’t live with her, you can invite her over to your house for dinner. It might not be a surprise, but she will appreciate it or consider taking her to her favourite restaurant. INTRODUCTORY FLIGHT frrom as little as £40 per person, enables you to have 20 minutes in the air on a local excursion in a light aircraft, to sit back and enjoy the view!

Home & Property
Updating Your
Bathroom Accessories You don’t have to spend a fortune to change the look and feel of your bathroom, by changing accessories or even the way you display them can make a huge difference to the overall feel. 1. Start with simple things. It’s very easy to get overwhelmed thinking about the details. Focus on what will be seen first. Typically most people look at the sink area first so when accessorising your bathroom you want to make sure you have something there to draw people in. Think about soap dispensers – can you add a splash of colour? 2. Add New Linens. We all have mix matched towels that have somehow accumulated over the years. We don’t know where they come from… it’s kind of like all the odd socks, but they are there! Put those towels away just in case you need them, but pick up some new towels to display in your bathroom. Don’t be afraid to use your linens as decorations! This helps cut to cost by using necessities as eye candy essentially! By filling up a wire basket with necessary wash cloths, I am eliminating a whole space that would otherwise need to be accessorised. 3. Get yourself a new shower curtain. Nothing hurts the overall feel of your bathroom more than a dingy shower curtain. I typically like to go with light colours since most bathrooms are small, it really brightens up the space and leaves you with a space that feels larger. 4. Use Storage as decoration. Using things such as little jars that allow you to declutter some of your shelves and drawers and hide things such as cotton wool in something pretty. 5. Shop inexpensive stores. When you are trying to shop on a budget you can find great quality items in supermarkets or DIY stores - be careful not to overlook those places. You don’t always have to go to bathroom specific stores! So next time you are out doing your weekly shop, take a look through the bathroom section and see how easy it is to accessorise your bathroom on a budget!

Dennis Bailey
General Builder Highly skilled, five star recommended and with a wealth of experience, Dennis Bailey is a General Builder who can take on tens of tasks from the ground upwards, inside and out, and deliver excellent results.
W
ith more than three decades in the trade, Dennis is an expert in his field. He prides himself on a job well done, every single time. Whether it is a general spruce up of your home you are after – maybe a stylish new floor or a replacement garage door, or some major roofing repairs or rendering work, Dennis is the man for the job – whatever the size. Do you have a chimney stack that needs looking at, or perhaps your guttering has seen better days? If so, now is a great time to give Dennis a call. Repointing that needs an expert eye is also something that he can help with. Maybe your home would look even better with a new garden wall or fence? With hot summer days and gloriously warm evenings to look forward to, a new pergola or gazebo would be something special to help you enjoy the sun and your garden. Or how about a brand new or carefully repaired patio to really make your property perfect? Drop Dennis a line to find out how he can help! Dennis can deliver fantastic results for all of these jobs – and many more. Don’t forget the inside of your home! As well as being able to undertake all roofing work (on both pitched and flat roofs, with slate roofs being a speciality), along with rendering and brick work, Dennis is also an expert at plastering, painting and decorating jobs. Floor screeding and levelling, and laminate floor laying are also among the many areas where Dennis and his team can excel. New skirting and doors needed? No problem! Does your bathroom or wet room have to go? Total strip outs and refits can be booked in. Dennis can even fit a new kitchen for you.
So if it’s an internal or external home makeover you are after, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Dennis. He and his work come highly recommended, with five star reviews on Bark.com. Dennis’ customers compliment him on his competitive pricing, punctuality, knowledge and his clean and tidy work, as well as his kind and friendly manner. And for your peace of mind, Dennis and those who work with him have personal liability insurance cover, as well as providing guarantees for all the work they carry out. For example, if it’s a new roof you’re looking for, this comes with a guarantee of up to sixteen years. Not only does Dennis’ work earn some great reviews, it also comes with a great deal of experience. He has been in the trade since 1987, having started out as a scaffolder’s labourer. But even back then, Dennis had ambitions to be his own boss in the building industry, and these days he is proud to work for himself. And what does Dennis like best about his chosen career? You! His loyal customers and his potential ones, alongside the fact that jobs are rarely the same. It is meeting people from all walks of life, and the wide variety of different tasks that Dennis and his workers are asked to do, that give him huge job satisfaction. The pleasure and pride that Dennis takes in his work shine through in all his jobs, and are among the many reasons that customers can expect a great service. Dennis and his team also ensure they work with their clients to get the right results. It is this attitude as well as attention to detail that make Dennis Bailey, General Builder the right choice for the job.
If you would like to get in touch with Dennis you can contact him on 01406 351951 or 07784 949642. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

Vauxhall Astra Hatchback Some cars are so gorgeous it’s difficult not to get precious about them. Others are workhorses that just do the job. The Astra is the latter. That’s not to say I don’t like the looks of the Vauxhall – I do. It’s not a “wow” car, but it’s not aesthetically offensive, either. It just merges in with the rest of the motors on the school run. Even in vaguely athletic SRi guise, you’d hope the car might have something special about it. But, no, it doesn’t. Not standing out from the crowd isn’t all that bad, though. It keeps you from looking too “bling” and possibly makes your ride less of a target for thieves. The Astra, as tested here in hatchback guise, is a decent
tool for ferrying the kids around without drama. It fits a family of five in it, although, at 370-litres, the boot isn’t the largest. Still, it copes okay, and the five-door car is easy to get in and out of. There are ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats, too. The drive is on the verge of clinical – the Griffin-badged car does the job well enough, but there’s no real feel. I felt oddly detached when behind the wheel. I think it’s because the steering is very light. Sure, this makes parking and manoeuvring around
Fast
FACTS
town effortless, but a weightier feel at speed would be welcome. It all just feels a little bland. But, hey, Vauxhalls are good value, and as there’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the Astra, I can’t help but recommend it as a worthy family car. Go for the SRi VX-Line NAV and you get a well-equipped vehicle. Goodies include a seven-inch colour touchscreen, navigation, sports-style front seats and cruise control. My parting comment is to opt for a manual variant. I was given a “stepless auto” to try. Yes, no clutch means driving is less of a hassle, but in 1.4 turbo petrol guise, going automatic can make the Astra a bit thirsty.
