Welcome to the May issue I keep saying it but I really cannot believe where this year is going…we are now coming to the summer months which means light nights, BBQs and time to get out and enjoy the sunshine. At home we have been on a Spring cleaning and updating mission – we have renovated our bathroom, trying to sort out the garden (and greenfingered we are not!) as well as moving my son into his ‘big boys bedroom’. In this issue we are looking at how to bring the outdoors in to make the most of the spring and summer weather, home security is definitely something we all need to think about when we are sat out in the garden, going on holiday or spending days out away from the home. Do you shop locally as much as you can? We explore how we can all impact our local economy by changing a few simple habits as well as encouraging us to eat locally produced, seasonal food. If you’re planning a child’s party over the coming months and already pulling your hair out then make sure you check out our guide to a hassle free soiree on page 17. Do you fancy some new wheels then as per every issue Tim is test driving a new car and this month it is the Honda Civic. Elsewhere Martin Lewis gives us his top tips to save money when booking a holiday and also what to look out for when buying add-ons such as insurance, car hire and car parking. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

Horse Shoe for Gary Porter
A locally-made horseshoe bearing the name of South Holland District Council Leader Gary Porter has taken pride of place on the walls of Oakham Castle, to mark a celebratory event. Lord Porter was special guest at the historic venue on Saturday for ‘Rutland 20’, a series of events held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Rutland regaining its status as an independent county. As part of an ancient tradition, members of royalty and peers of the realm are asked to present a horseshoe to the Lord of the Manor on their first visit to the castle. Over 240 horseshoes are hung on the castle’s walls, with the oldest dating back to Edward IV’s visit in 1470. Lord Porter’s horseshoe was made at Spalding Blacksmith’s museum Chain Bridge Forge and bears the name ‘Baron Porter of Spalding CBE 2017’. The horseshoe

also features three tulips, which are included in Lord Porter’s Coat of Arms as a South Holland connection. Lord Porter said: “The horseshoe looks magnificent and it’s a unique honour to have one made for me. Sharing wall space with royals is quite a privilege too. “We’re very fortunate to have a working museum like Chain Bridge Forge on our doorstep making living history like this, I’d like to thank them for their time and effort.” Geoff Taylor, from Chain Bridge Forge, said: “David Baynes our Blacksmith enjoyed this unique challenge and is delighted to see it displayed in such prestigious surroundings.” Chain Bridge is based in High Street and is currently open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am until 2pm and every Sunday 11am until 3pm.

Hundreds attend Jobs Fair
This year’s South Holland Jobs Fair has once again been hailed as a success, with around 380 people attending. The event, organised by South Holland District Council’s Economic Development Team and the Department for Work and Pensions, took place at the South Holland Centre on Tuesday 4th April. The event has been held annually for the last seven years and is aimed at helping local job seekers find work as well as aiding businesses in their drive to recruit staff. Visitors gained advice and information about many aspects of employment and learned about the skills needed for different roles.
REMOVAL SERVICE
This year’s event featured over 40 exhibitors from a range of sectors including the food industry, legal profession and training providers who were on hand to discuss current vacancies. A spokesperson for South Holland District Council said: “This year’s Job Fair was certainly one of the best, we had a big turn out and lots of positive feedback from visitors. “There was a wealth of advice and information on offer for anyone looking for work or who wants to learn more about different careers and opportunities. “We would like to thank everyone who attended and all of the exhibitors who took part.”

LIVES Pound for Pound On March 28th, the new £1 coin was be introduced and the old design phased out. Before the ‘round pound’ is no longer accepted, we are inviting everyone to donate their old pound coins to LIVES. From the 15th October 2017, the old £1 will no longer be accepted as legal tender. At LIVES, we have produced donation boxes to fit your old (and new) pound coins to help you prepare for the changeover. This will come in handy if you have some old coin jars or money boxes to sift through! Nikki Silver, CEO of LIVES commented “By donating your old (or new!) pound coins, you will help fund volunteers to attend a medical emergency, and help someone in their time of need. If every person across Lincolnshire donated a £1, we could keep our trained first responders and medics attending 999 calls across Lincolnshire for an entire year” LIVES will help more than 20,000
people in Lincolnshire during 2017. The medical emergencies the charity will respond throughout the year will range from falls, to breathing and heart problems, cardiac arrests and traumatic events such as road traffic collisions. LIVES responders are trained to deal with a wide range of emergencies and its volunteer medic team respond to more complex cases, effectively bringing the skills and techniques found in an A&E department or Intensive Care Unit to the roadside. Every year LIVES need to raise more than £1 million from public donations to keep their army of volunteers trained and equipped to be able to respond to any medical emergency across Lincolnshire. As 2017 is proving to be our busiest year, this amount is ever increasing. To donate your pound or request a donation box to collect pounds from work or home, please contact info@lives.org.uk or donate via https://lives.org.uk/donate/

Look After Your Mental Health with a Morning of Yoga In recent years, the importance of good mental health and emotional wellbeing have come in to the mainstream. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are currently spearheading a campaign, with charity Heads Together, to end stigma around mental health. Each May, since 2000, The Mental Health Foundation has been hosting Mental Health Awareness Week, to raise awareness of mental illness and steps we can take to improve our own mental health. This year’s week runs from 8-14th May and the theme is ‘surving to thriving’. On Saturday 6th May, Spalding based yoga studio, Padma Yoga, will be running a workshop to encourage people to try yoga, mindfulness and meditation. The morning will be suitable for complete beginners who have an interest in improving their mental health. Taught by Claire Thomas, the session will include floor based posture work, breath, mindfulness and simple meditation practices with the focus on practical techniques for everyday life. The session will end with tea, cake and an opportunity to chat. Claire has been teaching yoga since 2005 and has completed specific training in Yoga for Mental Health. The session, Yoga for Health & Wellbeing, will run from 10:00am to 12:30pm and will cost £15. All proceeds will be donated to The Mental Health Foundation. For further information and to book a space go to www. padmayogastudio.co.uk/ workshops-2/ or contact the studio on 07443 602108.

News Spalding and Beer Music Festival Spalding and Beer Music Festival next month will include a 50th anniversary celebration of one of the town’s most famous events. Barbeque 67 will be fondly remembered at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding from Friday, May 26 to Sunday, May 28. Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Cream played at the Tulip Bulb Auction Hall on May 29, 1967. Three other bands which appeared at that memorable gig – Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band, Sounds Force 5 and Zoot Money – are booked to play the Saturday night of the beerfest. Festival chairman Sam Nundy said: “Getting these three acts is a great coup. “Barbeque 67 was a hugely significant event in Spalding’s history and with our event coinciding with the 50th anniversary of it, we’re thrilled to have them playing.” He added: “We’ve been working hard to make the beerfest even better than our first one last year, which was a staggering success with 4,000 visitors across the weekend. “We’re saying please come and enjoy a fantastic family event. There will be a lot of attractions for all ages and we’re sure it’s going to be another great fundraiser.”
Other acts appearing include Zebra, Sarah O’Brien and her band Miss O’Brien’s Boys, Revolver, The Ultraviolet, The Moll Grips, The Manipulators and Special Groove. As well as great music, more than 100 real ales and ciders and lots of catering stands will be available. Tickets for the event are on sale at www. spaldingroundtable.co.uk or via a link on Facebook page Spalding Beer and Music Festival. Joint headline sponsors for the event are MJL Skips, Sign Design Services and Blast Off! Services (Spalding). Other main sponsors are Springfields Outlet Shopping, Moore Thompson, Crowland Cranes, Fairfield Landscapes, Steadfast Training and Duncan and Toplis. The event is jointly organised by Spalding and District Round Table and Spalding and District Ladies’ Circle. Last year it made more than £15,000 profit, which was distributed to more than 30 youth organisations, clubs and groups in South Holland. Improvements to the site set-up this year include more toilets and use of Castle Field for the family attractions.
Dina wins Open Arts – for the third time! A Spalding artist with a penchant for painting animals has won the prestigious public vote trophy at this year’s South Holland Open Arts contest – for the third time. Dina Perejogina’s painting ‘Stag Presence’ which depicts a striking brown Stag, captured the admiration of visitors to the exhibition which took place at the South Holland Centre earlier this month. Dina becomes the first artist to win the coveted public vote trophy on three occasions – back in 2014 she triumphed with her painting of three brown piglets peering over a fence and in 2016 her painting of a brown Bull took the prize. Dina said: “I can’t believe I have won again, I didn’t think people would vote for me because they may have known I was a previous winner. “I love painting animals and like to give a sense that they are looking straight at you in a happy and uplifting way, spreading positive vibes. “I am very grateful to everyone who voted
for me – it’s lovely to know that people are enjoying my work.” Cllr Gary Taylor, South Holland District Council’s portfolio holder for arts development, said: “Dina’s painting is very striking and certainly grabs your attention, so I can see why many people voted for it. “To win the trophy three times is an outstanding achievement of which she can rightly feel proud. “This year’s exhibition once again featured high quality artwork so I would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter.” The winner of the competition’s Best Newcomer award went to Jenny Wood for her

News Could you give Pinkie Pie the happy ever after she deserves? Saved from the stray pound, Pinkie Pie is a two year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier with so much love to give for everyone she meets. As her 9th month in their care approaches, Jerry Green Dog Rescue has launched a regional appeal to help find Pinkie Pie her forever home in time for Spring. The charity, which has cared for and found forever homes for around 1,000 dogs in the last 12 months, is calling upon its supporters to fulfil a rescue dog’s wish by spreading the word to help to find Pinkie Pie a home. “I have spent a lot of time with Pinkie Pie and I can honestly say that she is one of the most affectionate dogs that I have ever met. It breaks my heart to see her still waiting for her forever home.” Elizabeth Hempstock, Fundraising Officer. Pinkie Pie is currently Jerry Green Dog Rescue’s longest stay resident across the whole organisation, having been in their care for almost 9 months. To maximise the chance of her finding a home, Pinky Pie has been transferred between three of the charity’s five Centres but unfortunately, still hasn’t received any suitable interest. “Squeaky balls, tummy tickles, woodland walks and picnics are just a few of her all-time favourite things to do, along with looking constantly adorable and dishing out the best cuddles to her friends at the Centre.” Jo Hickson, South Lincolnshire’s Centre Manager. Pinkie Pie currently enjoys spending her days in the office perfecting her admin skills with our team. Working in Reception means that day in day out, she watches her

Elizabeth Hempstock says, “It’s not very often that we launch a large campaign for one of our rescue dogs as they are often rehomed within a reasonable time frame. However, for some reason our Pinkie Pie hasn’t received any suitable interest in any of our Centres so we are hoping that a big push will help do the trick!” Pinkie Pie is looking for an adult only home where she will be the only pet – more treats and sofa space for this one! She would benefit from a patient family, who is willing to continue her training and help improve her social skills around other dogs. Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
Nick’s Notes
ounty Council Elections are on the 4th May. This is your chance to vote for who you would like to represent you on the County Council for the next four years. The next four years are going to be extremely challenging for elected members, as we already know that the County Council will be getting considerably less money from central government and higher costs with the living wage, increased elderly population and social care costs, all of which will have a knock on effect on other services. Social care is obviously a major priority as are children’s services ( education ), pot holes, winter road maintenance and the Fire and rescue service. Tough decisions will need to be taken, so it won’t be for the faint hearted, but there will be opportunities too. Ironically when funding is short in one area, it often appears in another and certainly the government are continuing to provide Growth funding through the Local Enterprise Partnerships for infrastructure, such as major road improvements and investing heavily in the skills agenda particularly around technology and engineering, so expect to see some new engineering specialist colleges in the future. Agri-food will continue to play an important role in our economy and the area is at last being recognised Nationally
which in turn will continue to bring in much needed investment in areas as robotics. High Streets across the U.K. are struggling to compete with internet sales, import costs, the living wage and high rents, so there will be a concerted effort to work with the sector to improve shop fronts, improve on shop front displays to make shoppers want to come into their shops, increase footfall. We will be exploring a range of Regeneration grants to help with this. This means the sector have to sell what people want, sell high quality goods, be prepared to sell on the internet as well as in the shop and be open at weekends. Not a popular message perhaps but if they are to compete with the best and stay viable, then that is what they will need to do. May is the time when festivals, fairs and fetes begin in earnest, so please do support them when they are in the area. Church flower festivals in particular bring in much needed money to keep these important community facilities running and many others bring in money to keep village halls, community centres and attractions open. For an up to date calendar of events see the South Holland District Council website - “Visiting & Leisure - What on” section. Summer is on the way - enjoy and don’t forget to vote! Nick

Advice
What are Tax Reliefs? If a taxpayer spends money on certain outgoings, some or all of the amounts s/he spends can be deducted from her/his taxable income and s/he will therefore pay less tax. Tax reliefs can be claimed in addition to any personal tax allowances that the taxpayer is entitled to, and can be backdated for up to four years.
Some types of tax Self-employment expenses If you are self-employed you can claim tax relief for most expenses to do you’re your business, for example, buying stock or materials, premises costs, professional fees, office costs. Employees’ work-related expenses Tax relief for work-related expenses for employees can only be claimed for:•travel expenses the employee had to pay in the course of doing the job. This does not include travel between home and work or private travel •other expenses the employee had to pay in doing the job and that relate only to doing the job, for example, for professional fees and subscriptions, tools, specialist clothing. Tax relief cannot be claimed if the employer has reimbursed the employee for the expense and has agreed a dispensation with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). Information about the main types of tax allowances and reliefs an employee may be able to claim and how to claim them is available on the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk. Pension contributions You may be entitled to tax relief on pension payments made into a company, personal or stakeholder pension, provided HMRC has approved the pension scheme. Information about

tax relief on pension contributions and how it works is available on the HMRC website at www. hmrc.gov.uk. Income from property Tax relief or exemption may apply in respect of rental income from letting out a property. The Rent a Room scheme allows you to receive a certain amount of tax-free income from renting out furnished accommodation in your main home. Information about the scheme is available on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk. If the Rent a Room scheme does not apply, if you let out all or part of a property, including your own home, you may be able to claim tax relief under a different system. You may be able to claim expenses for maintaining and running the property that is let as relief against tax on the rental income. Further information about the Rent a Room scheme is available on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk . More about income tax and letting accommodation You can earn up to £1,000 of property-related income tax-free. This could include income from renting a parking space on their drive, or letting someone store items on their property for a fee. This tax relief cannot be used on the same source of income that they receive tax relief on as part of the Rent a Room scheme.
Information about how Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction works and how to claim it is available on the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website at www.hmrc.gov.uk. Claiming tax reliefs Some reliefs have to be claimed by writing to the taxpayer’s tax office and some are automatic. No action need be taken by the taxpayer to claim automatic reliefs. Information about how to get allowances and reliefs for employees is available on the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website at www.hmrc.gov.uk. To claim non-automatic reliefs for employment expenses, for example, hotel or travel costs, a you can use form P87 available from the HMRC website at www. hmrc.gov.uk .

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

School News
St John the Baptist Primary School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
Every child at St John the Baptist Primary School has attended a session on the Branston Potato Bus this week as it made its visit to their school. Billy Branston’s Amazing Potato Factory is in a double decker bus that is currently travelling around the UK to educate children about where their food comes from. Children take part in 3 activities while on the bus – understanding how farmers plant and harvest potatoes; learning about food groups and staying healthy; grading and weighing the potatoes The children have absolutely loved the experience. Headteacher Paul Reid said “Aside from the sessions on the bus being lots of fun, it has been extremely educational for our pupils. The lessons have complimented our Fork to Farm initiative that we have run in school since introducing our own school kitchen on site, where
Ayscoughfee Hall School The spring term at Ayscoughfee Hall School ended with the Easter Assembly, led by Reverend Aileen from the Parish Church. Attended by many parents, the Junior children read poems relating to different aspects of Easter and the Choir, Infant and Junior children sang a number of songs. Easter was also celebrated with a Design Technology afternoon, where the Juniors competed to build the tallest structure capable of supporting a crème egg. Younger classes investigated the safest material to wrap eggs in to avoid cracking and designed their own chocolate boxes, writing advertising slogans and making chocolates to take home. Kindergarten and Reception were lucky enough to visit Groves Farm to see some new born lambs, sheep and cows. The usual Interhouse cross country running competition was held in school, and we were proud to host an afternoon of cross country attended by other schools. The Under 9 boys, Under 9 girls and Under 11 girls all won their team

events, with the Under 11 boys coming joint second. Year 6 held an open afternoon showcasing their geography skills and work on ‘Europe’. They wrote their own guide books, prepared Power Point presentations and laid on a wonderful range of food tasting for the children, staff and parents to experience. They also visited Peterborough Cathedral and Mosque as part of their R.E work. School took part in the Shakespeare Week celebrations, with a special Assembly and a day of workshops for the Juniors, which culminated in a performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ to Years 1 and 2 and some Governors. We now look forward to a frenetic summer term, with the annual Music Concert, Sport’s Day, cricket and rounders matches, outings and the Junior Production.
children’s meals are cooked fresh each day; and also having our own allotment. Our current project in school is a curriculum cookery room for children to have cookery lessons. Our children have certainly been inspired by what they have learnt on the Branston Bus and we look forward to cooking some of our own home grown potatoes this year!”.
Moulton Chapel Primary School Spring is most definitely in the air as this is written: lambs in the fields, ducks pairing up and daffodils blooming! The warmth in the Sun has meant “coats off playtimes”! Our Infant pupils have travelled to The South Holland Centre to watch a performance of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. Everyone agreed it was a fantastic show. We continue to have a Gymnastics Club after school weekly and this is run by a qualified coach from Holbeach & Fenland Gymnastics Club. Recently the whole school travelled to the Club in Long Sutton to enjoy the facilities and specialist equipment under the tuition of the gymnastics coaches. This is something we have done annually for some years now. Selected pupils took part in the Key Steps Gymnastics Competition at the Club: lots of medals awarded and everyone came away with smiles on their faces. Our school is part of Lincolnshire Music Service and this brings many benefits, not least weekly curriculum teaching by a professional musician. The Chapel Hill Duo, string musicians, visited school to perform to the whole school. Star Wars’ theme, Harry Potter theme and Ed Sheeran tunes played on cello and violin plus may other pieces! The children loved it. Bikeability cycle proficiency training took place for our Y5 pupils, this training is offered annually. Watch out for our cyclists if you see them out on the roads please! Remember the speed limit through the village, and past school, is 30 miles per hour – not 60 mph as many drivers seems to think. Swimming continues to be part of our PE curriculum – the children have all made fantastic progress with their swimming. Swimming resumes in September. We supported Comic Relief and Sport Relief again this year and raised a total of £160.00 for the charities which is a fantastic achievement for our 60 pupil school. Our school has benefited from having two Edgehill University Primary Education students in school since January. Staff and children will miss Mr Lill and Mr Scott after they leave us at Easter – and we hope that their time with us has enthused them for their future teaching careers. Our best wishes go with them.

Library News Adult Book Choice The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer ‘She is an ex government employee on the run from the US government, trying to clear her name. She rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They’ve killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead! As she sets about interrogating her newest subject, she comes to realise the information is far more dangerous than she could have imagined. She is forced to turn the tables to ensure her survival.’ The chemist is a fast-paced, action packed, extremely well written thriller. The characters are interesting, with believable relationships developing throughout the book. This is a complete different genre for this author, with not a vampire in sight! A five star recommended page turner.

Planning the Perfect Party We’ve all been there. Our child is a year older, and we feel pressured to throw a birthday party that will wow the kids, the other mums and the birthday child.
O
ur child has been waiting all year for this party, so we want everything to be perfect. We want a unique venue that no one has ever chosen before, a fresh theme that has never been thought of and activities that will stimulate the kids. And we want all of this on a manageable budget with minimal effort…..No wonder we’re stressed! Just try to remember a successful party is simple; it needs to equate fun. It’s that easy. These steps can help you plan a fun and stress-free party for your child:
doesn’t know. You want your child to feel close to all the people who attend. • Consider limiting the size of the party. Sometimes if a party is too large, it is overwhelming and the child does not enjoy himself.
4) Send out invitations. Invitations should include the name of the birthday child, how old they will be, the date and time of the 1) Decide what kind of party you want. party (including an end time), Do you want a small and intimate party at whether it is drop-off or not, home with immediate family, a location with address a party with classmates, and directions, and a or a larger party with As phone number or friends, family, e nts, w email for RSVPs. classmates and pare ake our o m arties t Give a deadline friends from t n wa n’s p long e r for RSVPs. To decide, ask these questions: * How many people will the venue comfortable accommodate? * How many children can you adequately supervise? • Try to invite friends that your child is close to, not your friends or people your child
7) Make a budget You do not have to spend a lot to have a fun party. Kids don’t care how much a party costs; they just want to celebrate with their friends. It doesn’t have to be expensive to be special. If your child’s birthday is close to a friend’s birthday, you can share the party, the work and the costs!
8) Return the favor? Party bags are optional — not a MUST. You might want to use your budget for the party, not the party favors. As an alternative you can have a piñata, and give the guests small bags to take home the goodies they collect. Be creative – piñatas don’t have to be filled with sweets. You can fill them with trinkets, erasers, rings, coins, whistles, etc. Remember to involve your child Kids usually know what they want when it comes to their party. Listen to them. Think about the last party you went to that was fun. Was it because of the money spent on the party or because the atmosphere was relaxed? As parents, we want to make our children’s parties special, and as long as the focus is on the birthday child, it will be special. If you and your child are having a good time and celebrating this day, your guests will have a great time, too. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 17

How to Baby Proof Your Home
I
f you’re preparing your home for a baby, you’ll hear all the advice about babyproofing your house. Once your little ones start exploring, crawling, grabbing and touching their immediate surrounds, it’s important to keep those investigative fingers away from any danger.
small child from opening it • Place colourful stick-on decals on glass shower doors, at your little one’s eye level • Place non-slip mats in the shower and bath • Keep non-fixed mirrors locked away • Install tap locks in the basins, bath tub and shower
Kitchen: • Place child locks on all large appliances like fridge, oven and dishwasher • Keep all plastic bags, sandwich bags and black bags out of reach • Keep stools and chairs away from the kitchen counter to prevent toddlers from climbing up into a potential danger zone • Switch off and unplug appliances after use and keep the cables tucked away • Lock all accessible cupboards and drawers with child locks •Store the rubbish bin away from prying hands • Install stove and oven knob locks to prevent your child accidentally switching them on • Keep pet food, liquid washing tablets, dishwasher tablets and all other cleaning materials away
Living room: • Enclose the fireplace with a fireplace gate • Keep all lamps, cords and breakables like frames and mirrors, out of reach • Cover all electrical outlets with safety covers • Use straps to secure the TV and other movable furniture • Place colourful stick-on decals on french windows at your little one’s eye level
Bathroom: • Lock away all medicines and bath products • Install locks on cabinets and drawers • Install a toilet seat lock to prevent your
Bedroom: • Install childproof locks on all cabinets, closets and cupboards • Attach drawers to the wall with hooks to prevent them falling over • Place child guard rails against the edges of beds • Cover electrical outlets • Secure standing fans or lamps Elsewhere • Install baby gates at the tops and bottoms
of stairs • Use dummy plugs in any unused plug sockets • Tie up window blind cords out of reach Unfortunately, no matter how much we try to prevent it, accidents still happen. So keep a list of emergency numbers handy, and remember the most important thing – you’re always doing your best!
Dog Friendly Beach Trips Taking your dog to the beach can be a great way to spend a beautiful summer day. However, as a responsible dog owner there are certain precautions you should take: • Provide plenty of fresh water and shade for your dog. • Dogs can get sunburn, especially short-haired dogs and ones with pink skin and white hair. Limit your dog’s exposure when the sun is unusually strong, and apply sunblock to his ears and nose 30 minutes before going outside. • Check the water conditions - dogs are easy targets for jellyfish • If your dog is out of shape, don’t encourage him to run on the sand. Running on a beach is strenuous exercise, and a dog that is out of shape can easily pull a tendon or ligament. • Cool sea water is tempting to your dog. Do not allow him to drink too much seawater. The salt in the water will make him sick. • Salt and other minerals found in the ocean can damage your dog’s coat. So, when you are ready to leave for the day, rinse him off with fresh

water. • Not all beaches permit dogs. Check local signage DOES YOUR DOGGY PADDLE? The majority of dogs can swim and they love it. But dogs entering the water for the first time should be tested. Here are some important tips for teaching your dog how to swim: • Never throw your dog into the water. • Start in shallow water, and call your dog’s name. You can also try to coax him in with a treat or toy - but always keep your dog within reach. • Another way to introduce your dog to the water is with a dog that already swims and is friendly with your dog. Let your dog follow his friend. • If your dog begins to doggy-paddle with his
front legs only, lift his hind legs and help him float. He should quickly catch on and will then keep his back end up. • Swimming is a great form of exercise, but don’t let your dog overdo it. He will be using new muscles and may tire quickly. • Be careful of strong tides that are hazardous for even the best swimmers. • Never leave your dog unattended! You should always be in a position to help him get out of the water.

National Smile Month
Health & Beauty
In a nutshell, National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health.
T
ogether, with thousands of individuals and organisations, National Smile Month highlights three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks. • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health. Organised by oral health charity, the Oral Health Foundation, the campaign hopes to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions. In 2017, the campaign celebrates 40 years and will take place between 15 May and 15 June, and will encourage all dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces – in fact anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare, to join in and help us educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improves the quality of smiles all around the UK. Poor oral health isn’t just about problems inside the mouth. A smile is hugely important to our personalities, self-confidence, relationships and success. Our general health is also at risk too as studies continue to associate poor oral health to serious health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, strokes, premature births and other major conditions. To mark the 40th Birthday of National Smile Month here are 40 facts and figures about oral health which may surprise you:

Provides
Two BIG Reasons to see what we can offer your pet In January 2016 the Sutterton practice became an accredited Veterinary Hospital and joined the British Veterinary Hospital Association (BVHA). Not all Vets are the Same There are many things to consider when making this choice, personal recommendation, convenience of access etc. However it is important to remember that not all veterinary practices are the same. Veterinary Hospitals represent the highest standard of veterinary practice in the UK. BVHA Hospital members have an intensive examination and inspection of their practices. This inspection is carried out by independent inspectors appointed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the professions governing body. The inspection covers a whole range of issues relating to the care of patients -for example the continuing education of staff, the provision of anaesthetic monitoring and on-site laboratory equipment, the quality of radiographic, ultrasound & endoscopy facilities and the quality of the case records. It also covers the physical aspects of the buildings -for example the provision of suitable hospitalisation for pet comfort during their stay and isolation facilities to prevent the spread of disease from infectious patients. Independent Inspection One of the most important aspects of a Veterinary Hospital is that they have members of staff on the premises 24 hours a day. These members of the veterinary team are specifically responsible for the care of any in-patients. In most veterinary practices there is no-one on the premises after the end of evening surgery or over weekends. If your pet has to be admitted for veterinary treatment, we are sure everyone would like to know that there is someone there to look after them. The ability to provide 24 hour nursing care is a major cost for Veterinary Hospitals, but we think you’ll find our prices very competitive, even with other non-hospital practices.

What is the difference between a ‘Freehold’ and ‘Leasehold’ property?
D
uring the conveyancing process, whether you are selling or buying, it will need to be established whether the property is a ‘freehold’ or ‘leasehold’ property. What is a ‘Freehold’ property? A ‘freehold’ property means that the owner has complete and absolute ownership of the land and all buildings that stand on it. As the owner of a freehold property, there are less restrictions regarding what can be done with the land or dwelling, provided that you comply with planning guidelines and restrictions. What is a ‘Leasehold’ property? ‘Leasehold’ ownership of a flat/apartment or property simply refers to a long tenancy (the right
to own, occupy and use a flat for a long period – this period is known as the fixed period or fixed ‘term’ of the lease). This fixed term can range from a few years to 999 years. Within that term, the flat can be bought and sold. The lease term is fixed from the very start of the lease and decreases with each respective year. At the end of the lease, the flat is returned to the owner of the building (the freeholder). The conveyancing team can advise you on the number of years left on your lease. Even though a leaseholder owns the property on a lease, it is the owner of the freehold who retains ownership of the external and structural walls, as

Why Shop Local! Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices. Many people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then are surprised by the range of products and gifts available. Shopping locally saves you money. Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us all that sole traders = expensive, but the evidence just isn’t there to back this up. If you add in travel, parking costs and fees to transport larger items home, the overall cost is often much greater. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns and villages but don’t equate this to how they spend their money. Shops will only survive if customers spend locally - so if you want a vibrant selection locally where people can socialise as well as shop, we need to encourage people to shop locally.
Shopping locally creates jobs. Shops in our town centres and villages create local employment and self employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Evidence shows that for every £10 spent in an independent shop, £25 is generated for the local economy compared to £14 spent in multinationals. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys shows people receive better customer care and service in local shops. Traders survive by their reputation and repeat business - so shopping locally means that you get a higher standard of service. Shopping locally saves services. Private, voluntary and public sector services cluster around shops. The loss of the high street often corresponds to a reduction in these services. As shops disappear, so do hairdressers, vets, dentists etc.
Farmers Market
T
he primary aim of Farmers’ Markets is to support local farmers and producers, who sell produce they have grown or made to their local community. The Farmers’ Market movement started in the UK in the 1990s as a
result of poor farm prices, leading to many family farms needing a viable local route to market their produce. Today there are markets across the UK providing thousands of farmers with a real lifeline.
But what is a Farmers’ Market and how do you know when you find one? If you head to a Farmers’ Market, what should you look out for? For a true Framers market there are a few simple things to look out for: • You should find real life farmers trading at the market. • If the product is not a farm product you should meet with the producer; this could be the baker,
cook, curer or jam maker and they should source their ingredients as close to your market as possible. • The farmers and producers should come from your area; they should be part of your community where possible. Sometimes they may come from farther afield but only if they can’t get the products from a local producer.
Farm Shops
T
here are an estimated 4000 farm shops across the UK and it seems people have never been so interested in quality local food and how it is produced, in freshness and in traceability. Customers are seeking out specialist producers and, for some, there is a desire to reduce food miles. While farm shops come in all shapes and sizes, the most sustainable at the moment are those offering what is known as a full basket shop – all the ingredients for a good wholesome meal, thereby making the journey for customers worthwhile, and there are several within the local area: • Spalding Farm Shop, Surfleet • Vine House Farm, Deeping St Nicholas • Wimberley Hall Farm Shop, Weston • Lincs Farm Shop, Whaplode • Chestnuts Farm Shop, Gedney • The Farm Shop, Fleet Hargate • Abbey Parks Farm Shop, Heckington • Pinchins Farm Shop, Algarkirk • Manor Farm Shop, Swineshead • Ivy’s Farm Shop, Swineshead • Old McDonald’s Farm Shop, Wyberton Fen There are many more independent retailers you can support with your weekly shopping butchers, greengrocers, bakers, cafes or delicatessens. By simply switching your routine not only will you help the local economy, you will eat more local produce and possibly save yourself money! So next time you need to go shopping, challenge yourself to shop local. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 27

Funerals
Who pays for a funeral?
Sometimes, the person who’s died may have already paid for their funeral with a pre-payment plan or funeral insurance policy. Or they’ve left some money in their estate to cover it.
I
f so, the executor of the estate will take care of paying the funeral bill, otherwise, usually a relative or friend pays for the funeral But they can get the funeral costs back from the estate if there’s enough in it The local council or hospital can arrange a Public Health Funeral if: • There isn’t enough money in the estate to pay for it. • There are no relatives or friends available to arrange the funeral. This is usually a cremation. You can attend the funeral but the local authority will decide the time and date. There normally is a short service, but extras such as flowers, cars or notices in the local newspaper are not included. What is a pre-paid funeral plan? The deceased will have pre-paid a funeral director or a funeral care company for a specific type of funeral. With a funeral plan, you will have to use that funeral director, or one from an approved list, to arrange the funeral. With a pre-paid funeral plan, you just need to make sure that the funeral you arrange is within the amount covered by the plan. Otherwise, you’ll need to pay for any extra add-ons you’ve chosen. With a burial for example, the plan
usually only covers part of the cost of a plot. Check if the deceased has paid for a grave in advance. What is funeral insurance? This is a type of insurance that pays out a fixed lump sum which should cover the cost of a funeral. This insurance is sometimes known as an ‘over-50s plan’. When the lump sum is paid out, you can then use it to pay for a funeral from any funeral director. You should check how much the lump sum is before you make any funeral arrangements. If the price of the funeral is more than that sum, you’ll need to pay for any extras. How do I claim on a pre-paid funeral plan or funeral insurance? Unfortunately, there is no central place or directory to check if the person who’s died had a funeral plan or insurance. If you think they’ve got one, you should check their papers for a copy of this. You should also check if this was stored with the will, with a family solicitor or at the bank. Paying with deceased’s bank account The deceased might have left money in their account to pay for their funeral. However, the bank or building society normally freezes their individual account(s) when they’re told of the person’s death. In most cases, you normally need the help of the executor or administrator of the estate to access the money in their account once it’s frozen. It is however, sometimes
possible to access the money in their account without their help. As a minimum, you’ll need a copy of the death certificate, and an invoice for the funeral costs with your name on it. The bank or building society might also want proof of your identity. They can then pay the essential funeral bills directly to the company providing the service. If there isn’t a will or an executor, you could try speaking to their bank to see if they’ll release the money to pay for the funeral. Some banks might let you do this. It’s not a good idea to access the person’s individual accounts, even if you know their debit card PIN or online banking log-in. Speak to the bank first if you need to do this, otherwise you could get into legal trouble. If the deceased has a joint account where the joint owner is still alive, that person can still access the money in the account. Paying by instalments A funeral director will often ask for at least some of the money up front. If you can’t do this, you should really think about having a more affordable funeral. Another option is to ask if you could pay the bill in instalments. If they agree, you can then negotiate instalments but make sure that these are affordable for you. Claiming funeral costs from the estate Whoever pays for the funeral –family, friends or the council – can seek to recover the costs from the deceased’s estate. Sometimes, their estate is not large enough to cover this. If the deceased had other debts, funeral costs are usually paid first. However, some secured debts, such as a mortgage, are paid before funeral costs. If you offer to pay for the funeral, it’s worth checking with the administrator of the estate that you’re able to recover the money later on if you need to. Knowing how much money is in the estate to cover the funeral costs might also affect the type of funeral you wish to pay for. Try not to feel pressured into paying for a funeral you can’t afford.
Did you know the average cost of a simple funeral is £3,702. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 31

Myth-Busting Funeral Facts I
ng Dyi rs tte Ma ness are Aw eek y Ma W h t 14 ay M 8th
t’s often thought that funerals are strictly traditional affairs, with sombre-looking people dressed in black and hymns sung in church. For many, this may feel right for them, but it’s easy to forget that a funeral is a celebration of the end of your life. With the right amount of planning, you can ensure that your funeral is personal to you and make the process easier on your loved ones when the time comes. Between Monday 8th May to Sunday 14th May, Lincolnshire Co-op is taking part in Dying Matters Awareness Week to encourage people to think about the future. Uncertainty about what a funeral involves is one reason why people don’t like to talk about death, so Lincolnshire Co-op’s Deborah Staff from Spalding Funeral home has debunked some of the most prominent funeral myths…
You must have a traditional wooden coffin “Funerals don’t have to be traditional, and the more you plan the more you can tailor yours to suit you. If you opt to be buried, you will have a choice of coffins to fit your budget that goes beyond the ‘norm’. Lincolnshire Co-op offers a variety of options, including eco coffins such as bamboo, willow or cardboard that lessen the impact on the environment. The options are endless! You can even decorate yours to add a truly personal touch.”
Limos and black hearses are the only transport you should use “Just like a coffin, you can use any vehicle you like. Tradition dictates that limousines, black hearses or horse drawn carriages are the limit, but it’s your choice. We’ve known people to even have opted for their coffin to be transported in a specially adapted motorcycle sidecar, fire engine and double decker bus. Our funeral teams can offer a wide range of transport from a high quality and meticulously maintained fleet of vehicles.”
You have to go to a funeral to pay your respects “These days there are many ways you can share your messages of condolence no matter where you are in the world. Our online obituaries provide a place for people who were unable to attend a funeral to pay their respects, and is a permanent fixture that you can keep revisiting. Also, funeral can be observed via a web-link from some crematoria.”
Your body must be kept in the funeral home “Your body can be kept at home before your funeral if you wish.
Linc olnshire C o-op’s Deborah Staff fr om Spalding Funeral home If this is your wish, we advise embalming. This drastically slows down the natural process after death, and the modest cost of embalming gives great peace of mind to the bereaved family.”
Funerals have to be expensive “Lincolnshire Co-op is committed to helping people find a funeral they can afford. To show this, we’ve signed the Fair Funerals Enhanced Pledge to help tackle funeral poverty by keeping our prices well below the national average and just under the local average. We share details of our prices with customers through our website. “Funeral plans are also a way of spreading the cost of a funeral, giving you the option to pay in instalments. Throughout May, members of Lincolnshire Co-op will receive 10% dividend when they buy a funeral plan.” Death and dying can be a worrying topic of conversation for many and although it’s difficult to think about, talking to others and getting advice from your local funeral home is a good place to start.
Visit your local Lincolnshire Co-op funeral home or attend a Death Café event in your area to find out more about Dying Matters Awareness Week and current offers on funeral plans. More details can be found at lincolnshire.coop/funeral. 32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

South East Lincolnshire Local Plan 2011-2036: Publication Version The final public consultation on the new Local Plan is now underway and will run until 22nd May 2017 The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan covers the whole of the local authority areas of Boston Borough Council and South Holland District Council and will guide development and use of land in the area up until 2036. As we are now at the final stage of plan preparation this consultation is different to previous ones undertaken in that the comments made must relate to whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and complies with legal and procedural requirements. A guidance note is therefore available to view on our website: southeastlincslocalplan.org, which sets out advice on how to respond. The Publication Version Local Plan includes sites to be allocated for different types of development, such as housing and employment, in order to meet the area’s needs, as well as identifying those areas of land which must be protected from development - perhaps because of their historic or environmental importance. It also covers a wide range of other planning related matters in the form of policies, against which planning applications can be judged.
We have also published a number of other documents for consultation including the Policies Map, Sustainability Appraisal, Statement of Consultation as well as other supporting documents. The documents are available to view on our website (address opposite), in the area’s libraries, mobile libraries and the council offices in Boston and Spalding, during normal office hours. An online consultation portal is also available at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation Cllr Peter Bedford, chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, said: “We have taken on board the comments you have made so far about how you would like to see Boston Borough and South Holland developed. A lot of work has gone into its production, and it cannot be stressed enough how important this will be in influencing where we build up until 2036. You now have a final chance to comment on the plan, before it is submitted, to help shape the future for generations to come.”
You can comment on the consultation documents: n Preferably online via our dedicated consultation portal at: southeastlincslocalplan.org/consultation n By emailing a completed comment form (available to download from our website or collect at locations listed to the left) to southeastlincslocalplan@sholland.gov.uk n By post using the comment form to: South East Lincolnshire Local Plan, South Holland District Council Offices, Priory Road, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 2XE
Comments made must be received by 5pm on 22nd May 2017 All comments received will be submitted to the Secretary of State and considered as part of an independent Examination in Public by a Planning Inspector. Holiday Bookings
I
t’s cold, wet, and miserable, so no wonder this is the peak summer holiday booking period. However, with the pound recently at a 32 year low against the dollar, and matching the awful rates of 2013 against the euro, this year it’s likely to be a challenge to get a decent price. The weak pound not only hits holiday spending, but hotels, car hire and more, so here are my 10 top tips for keeping costs down.
use comparison sites www.trivago.co.uk and www. travelsupermarket.com for a wide-ranging search (and always call the hotel to see if it’ll beat the price). The difference can be £100s.
3. With car hire book it early and buy insurance elsewhere. If hiring abroad, generally early booking is cheaper, what costs £10 a day now can be £40 a day when you get there. Here’s the three key steps: a) Do a comparison to find your cheapest. I’d try 1. Pocket the perfect plastic to make the pound www.kayak.co.uk, www.carrentals.co.uk and if perform. needed www.skyscanner.net too. Spend abroad and most credit cards add a 3% b) Check stealth fuel charges. Some try and make you ‘non-sterling transaction fee’ which means £100 of pay for a full tank and return it empty - adding £80ish euros costs £103 and some then load other charges if you don’t drive far. The above, apart from Kayak, let on top. However, there are a range of specialist cards you filter by fuel policy. that don’t add that fee. So, you get that day’s c) Don’t fall for their insurance up-sell. When you same near-perfect rate that the banks pick up a car they’ll often try and fear sell do, in every country. TIPS
6. Don’t forget the good old fashion package holiday. Package holidays are where you usually get flights, hotels and transfers in one. They can still be the cheapest especially if you’re going away for 7, 10 or 14 days in a traditional holiday destination like Benidorm. Both www.travelsupermarket.com and www.icelolly.com have comparison sites. Then once you’ve got up a price, if you
By Martin Lewis @moneysavingex pert want to shave a little off, you can call up other agents to see if they’ll sell you the same holiday at a cheaper price. 7. Book travel insurance AS SOON as you book the holiday. Every year people email me saying something sadly akin to, “I’m due on holiday in a few months, but I’ve just been given a cancer diagnosis and can’t go, the airline won’t let me cancel, what can I do?” The answer is ‘that’s what travel insurance is for’. Yet many people only book it just before they go. Waiting defeats half the point of having the cover – which is to protect you in the event cancellation is needed due to illness, a death in the family or something else. Full help on the cheapest policies, including for over 65s in www.mse. me/travelinsurance. 8. Booked EasyJet – keep checking the price. If your EasyJet price drops after you’ve booked it – excluding in a sale – you can just call it up to ask for the difference back in vouchers. Jo emailed: “We got an £803 voucher... all thanks to you.” 9. Check if your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is still valid. The free EHIC means if you’re in an EU (and a few others) country you can use a state GP or hospital for the same price as a local, so if it’s free for them, it’s free for you. It’s valuable extra protection (alongside travel insurance). Yet it’s not valid for millions, this is nothing to do with Brexit, but simply that it has a valid until date and 5.3 million expired in the last year. Check yours, if it is, go to www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/ EHIC to get a new one for FREE (don’t Google this, you’ll find shyster sites trying to charge you to do it who add nothing to the process). 10. Be careful boozing on holiday. A final thought. If you’re going to drink on holiday (and let’s be honest, for many people that’s half what it’s about), remember this may invalidate your travel insurance claim. So, take it easy, and if you won’t take it easy, at least think about what belongings you’re taking with you! www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

Your garden is an extension of your home and by taking some basic steps to maintain your lawn, now you can maximise your outdoor space to its full potential and have all your neighbours asking, “How did you get your grass so green?” Important jobs for spring include raking away any leaves or debris that are depriving your lawn of essential light, seeding any bare patches and giving the grass that all important first cut of the year. As a rule of thumb, the first dry and sunny day of March is a good day to give your lawn mower its first run. Remember to use the highest blade setting to avoid cutting the grass too short which can attract unwanted weeds and moss.

Indoor outdoor spaces ‘Indoor outdoor spaces’ is the buzz word of the moment in interior and garden design. However, this is not just a fad, it’s a great way to gain more space and light into your home.
T
he UK has been slow to embrace designing their homes to incorporate indoor/outdoor spaces. Some postmodern houses built in the 60s-70s did incorporate the idea and it has been popular among self-builders, but it has never really taken off in the main stream. In the US, Canada and Australia the concept of indoor outdoor space has always been popular. Some might blame the British weather; gloomy, wet and unpredictable; it does not invite one to spend time outside. However, it’s exactly because our weather is unpredictable that indoor outdoor spaces should be embraced. There is something cosy about sitting in chair, coffee in hand, watching the rain fall while you are sheltered and warm. Also, removing the barriers between indoors and outside makes having barbeques far more pleasant as the temperature can drop of an evening. Happily, things are changing, and thanks to things like Pinterest and TV shows, the UK is discovering how indoor outdoor space can transform your house. Some will even argue that it will transform your life as well! What is indoor outdoor space? What is indoor outdoor space exactly? There are many variations but, to put it simply, it is a graduation of indoor space into outdoor space. This is achieved by introducing roof overhangs, wall-to-wall floorto-ceiling glass or bi-folding doors, conservatories, lantern roofs,- this is by no means a comprehensive list, just examples of how indoor outdoor
spaces are created. If you want a similar feel but on a budget think about ab garden awning, wooden gazebo or summer house. Another design aspect of these spaces is the continuation of flooring or other building materials from inside to outside. Basically what you are trying to achieve is a blurring of the boundaries and to draw the eye outside. Indoor outdoor spaces were a core belief of American Architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He argued that man and nature were one and should never be separated, and he strove to achieve balance between man’s need for shelter and his need to connect with nature. He pioneered homes across the US from Buffalo, New York to the Arizona desert that incorporated indoor outdoor spaces and open plan living. How to get indoor outdoor space in your home? You don’t need a modernist or post-modern house worthy of Frank Lloyd Wright to create indoor outdoor space. It can be achieved in a Victorian terrace, Georgian town house or a 20th century property. You don’t need a huge garden either, bringing the outside in can be created even with a courtyard garden. The most effective way to do this is to have a rear extension with wall-to-wall bi-folding doors, floor to ceiling windows or create an overhanging roof. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 39
Home & Garden
How to Create an Indoor Garden Growing indoors may seem limiting, but if you have a small garden or over the cooler months there is still plenty to keep the horticulturally-minded occupied. Windowsills offer a world of opportunity; a bright and airy Apropos conservatory can become a veritable nursery; and even cool, dark cellars and cupboards can offer an unexpected opening for some urban gardening. The trick is to find the right project for you and your home. 1. What have you got? To be successful at gardening is that you need to put the right plant in the right place, so if you only have a cold room to grow in, you can knock the idea of orchids on the head. Equally, you’re never going become a member of the Pteridological (fern) Society if you only have a warm, south-facing windowsill to use. It pays to think about your available growing space, and research the plants that will flourish there, before you spend time and money on a doomed project. 2. What do you want? It’s commonly said that ‘a weed is only a plant in the wrong place’, so make sure that you’re growing things that will please you. There are plenty of edibles to be grown indoors, even in winter, but if flowers or foliage are your thing, there’s really nothing to stop you. 3. Let the fun begin! Like every good boy and girl scout, indoor gardeners need to be prepared: • Clear your space • Purchase the right soil • Disinfect any old pots you’re thinking of using • Invest in an indoor greenhouse if you need one • If you’re thinking big – a planted fish pond in the centre of the conservatory, an indoor desertscape complete with cacti – draw up a plan and formulate a budget. • Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty!
Edibles: Radishes and smaller carrot varieties are happy in pots; salad leaves and most herbs (parsley, basil, coriander, rosemary, sage, lemongrass) can be grown year-round; a wide variety of mushrooms could flourish in your under-stairs cupboard; peas, dwarf beans and chillies will love a warm, bright conservatory. Plants for flowers: Orchids; bromeliads; tacca chantrieri ‘black bat plant’; African violet; Christmas cactus; hibiscus; scented jasmine; begonias.
Plants for foliage: Ferns; heart-leaf philodendron; weeping fig; mother-in-law’s tongue; English ivy; oxalis (which also boasts pretty flowers). Low-maintenance plants: Cacti; peace lily; spider plant; jade plant; rubber tree; areca palm. Project plants: Bonsai (easier than you might think); carnivorous plants; design a miniature alpine garden.
Plant of the month - Garden Rose
G
arden roses are one of the most popular and widely cultivated groups of flowering plants yet they vary immensely in colour, scent and flower shape as well as growing style. Rose flowers are available in a host of colours and shades, from bright pinks and reds through to crisp whites; always popular and classic choice for bridal bouquets all year round. In the garden, roses are grown as bushes, climbers or shrubs yet most garden roses prefer well-watered, rich soil in areas of full sunlight. Adding special rose fertiliser in spring will help to ensure they flower profusely and remain healthy. Pruning is vital to encourage new growth and is best performed late February to early March. 40 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Home & Garden
Protecting your home over Summer During the Summer months we tend to spend more time out of the house, on holiday, visiting friends, days out or even if it is only in the back garden. There are some easy ways you can protect your home while you are out.
S
adly burglaries do happen and often, the homeowner had made their home unintentionally attractive to a burglar. There is one piece of advice that is consistent in the security industry when it comes to preventing a burglary which was “don’t make your home the easy target”. In other words, you don’t have to make your home like Fort Knox but you need to do enough that it isn’t the most tempting home on your street. So what are the do’s and do not’s when it comes to protecting your home. Firstly, if you are security conscious consider how long it is since you put those systems into place. If you put the latest windows in with the best locks, but it was ten years ago, you might like to speak to a professional to see if it is time to upgrade as
safety when it comes to windows is always being reviewed. Take a good, hard look at your windows. Statistically, around a third of burglars will enter a home in this way. Let’s start with the obvious, don’t leave your windows open if you are out. It may be hot inside if you leave them closed but it will be less tempting for an opportunist burglar to have a go. Laminated glass is particularly difficult to break so if you have any windows that are out of the way which would present a good prospect to a burglar you might like to consider installing it. After windows comes doors. Whilst a third of burglars come in through a window the other two thirds will come in through the door. If you have glass in your door make sure you don’t leave your keys in the lock – for two reasons. Firstly the glass can be smashed and entry easily gained. Secondly, don’t put yourself in a position whereby a burglar can enter through a window but leave quite easily through a door. A mortise deadlock will ensure a burglar can’t unlock the door simply by smashing their way in. If you have a professional round about your windows ask them to assess the doors and frames for their strength. Consider the exterior of your house. Have you got unlocked gates? Low fences
or hedges in front of your home? It’s perfect territory for a burglar to conceal themselves while they are trying to gain access to your property. Also, if you haven’t already, install some outside lighting. Either a sensor light to attract immediate attention to the property or a constant low- level light which is on all night which deters burglars by maintaining light levels so they can easily be seen. And while we’re on the subject of outside be careful to secure your garage properly as not only does it house your car but often many tools that could help a burglar. Take extra care to secure your ladders! Finally, Burglar alarms and CCTV cameras. They really are self-explanatory as are their benefits. One piece of advice if you do own one is to get a generic alarm sticker rather than the branded one you will be provided with as it could give a savvy burglar information about how best to disable them. Don’t forget man’s best friend. A dog can be just as good a deterrent as an alarm. It doesn’t even have to be a big dog, in fact the yappier the better!
Household Tips • Use Aluminum Foil to Scrub Off Baked-On Food
• If you have remnants of your casserole stuck to your baking dish, scrunch up a clean piece of foil into a ball, then use it with few drops of washing up liquid to scrub glass cookware clean. • Use a Dryer Sheet to Get Rid of Soap Residue • Don’t toss that used tumble dryer sheet. Sprinkle it with a few drops of water, then use it to wipe away built-up soap residue on your shower doors. It works wonders on scummy surfaces! • Use a Rubber Glove to Pick Up Fur • Has its fur taken up residence on your sofa or chair? Pick it up quickly and easily by running a damp rubber glove over the surface. Any hair will cling to the glove, not the upholstery. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 43

New 2017 Honda Civic PROS ‘N’ CONS
Location: Barcelona
T
he Honda Civic has been around forever. It’s one of those Japanese brands that has never faded away or changed into anything else, and it’s remarkable to think it’s been on our roads since 1972. The 2017 Civic is the 10th generation of the model, and Honda claims it wanted to bring back the essence of a practical, yet entertaining vehicle to drive. To do this, the firm has spent time re-engineering this fresh Civic from top to toe. The all-new Honda Civic marks the introduction of two petrol units – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder ‘VTEC Turbo’ and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder power plant. The 1.0-litre yields 129PS, and will do 55mpg, while the 1.5-litre produces 182PS and 48mpg of fuel economy. Undoubtedly, the tenth incarnation of the Civic is an improvement over the last model, handling well on the test route that we took it out on around Barcelona in Spain. And the new power units – of which we drove the 1.5-litre variant – are first-rate, with lots of keen delivery, although the 1.5 i-VTEC Turbo Sport is not as potent as its athletic body suggests. The new ‘VTEC Turbo’ engine can be joined to a CVT automatic gearbox, but we’d recommend trying the six-speed manual gearbox as it feels excellent in the hand and gratifying to work with. It’s also to the Civic’s credit that it stays hushed and refined, regardless of the flashy undercurrent. The design of the all-new Honda Civic has changed. The exiting model is rounder, but the new Civic is like a compact saloon. It looks wider and smoother around the nose area, and the rear has an angular, level shape. Inside, the split-dash has been replaced by a smarter design – reminiscent of the lovely 90’s Honda dashboard layouts. This is a nod to an age when the Japanese 44 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
automaker made some of its best cars. The 2017 Honda Civic will be made in Swindon, a factory that has turned out wellbuilt cars for some time now. The British plant will be constructing the model not just for the UK, but for the whole world. This is the inaugural ‘global’ Civic, meaning it’s being made with no specific changes for regions, other than the obvious adaptations for left and right-hand drive markets. Topping the features of the new Civic is Honda’s ‘Connect’ infotainment unit, which is companionable with Android Auto and Apple Car Play operating systems. The other headliner, in terms of kit, is Honda’s safety technology bundle, known as ‘Sensing’. It merges several bits of tech to keep you safe and sound. Features include lane keeping assistant, forward collision warning adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. Due to changes to the structure of the Civic, the ‘Magic Seats’ that made for simple loading of big objects are now absent. Despite this, the boot still holds a notable 478-litres, so it is by no means an issue. Honda has announced the price-tag of its up-to-date Civic, and it will start from £18,335 increasing to £27,295, depending on which trim level you want. The all-new Honda Civic is a great effort

from the Japanese firm, and brings it right into serious competition with hardcore rivals like Ford’s Focus and VW’s Golf. The way the tenth-generation Civic looks, feels, and goes means the opposition should be worried. Now we must wait for the diesel and the ultra-hot Type R to make their entrance.
