Welcome to the November issue I

’m not sure I should be saying this but we are already getting prepared for Christmas, I have started getting quite a few presents stashed away and know what I will be buying everyone. We have quite a large family and a few years ago we decided rather than spend huge amounts on lots of little presents we would do a family ‘secret santa’, basically we write down five presents we would like on a card, all of them go into a pile and we each pick one. So instead of getting lots of little bits we get one larger present, it really has taken the street out of Christmas shopping as it has reduced the number of presents we buy, by at least 12! Enough about Christmas and back to November, crisp frosty mornings, bracing walks and early dinners in front of the fire is what I think winter is all about. We visited the pumpkin parade in Spalding and with the help of ear defenders for the little ones it was a success, so we are looking forward to going to a firework display this month. In this bumper issue we catch up with The Chapmans as they travel the world with their son Kian, we look at how to handle fireworks safely and we think about ensuring your home is safe during the long winter nights. If you or your child will be looking at their sixth form options in the near future then ensure you read our guide to the choices available to them as the world is their oyster! Tim takes the new Seat Leon for a test drive and we also look at making sure your car is in tip top condition for the roads this winter.

Tonic Health Manage Care Network Tonic Health, a Spalding based health and wellbeing charity, has been handed a cash boost to expand both their dementia and mental health services for the people of South Holland. Funded through the NHS Managed Care Network, Tonic Health were successful with both projects, receiving almost £45,000 from a total of £330,000 gifted to organisations spread over the whole of Lincolnshire. The first project builds on the past 2 years of dementia service delivery from Tonic Health, and further expands the services the charity is able to offer. The popular weekly Dementia Café, Movement 4Memory, will continue to run every Wednesday 1.30pm-3.30pm and will offer gentle exercise, stimulating activities and refreshments and is available to people with dementia and their carer/family members. The FOCUS project, which runs on a fortnightly basis on Tuesdays, from 10am to 4pm, is for people with early onset or have been recently diagnosed with Dementia, and this project is just for this person – allowing the carer some valuable time off. The second project to be funded is the Safe Places Mental Health initiative. Having just started one year ago, the project has grown from strength to strength and surpassed the funding targets set at inception by almost 300%. Project co-ordinator Vanessa Browning has seen so many people access the project over the past year with many success

stories. The Tuesday afternoon meeting group will continue to meet from 4.30-6pm, and the business awareness training sessions in mental health and suicide awareness will also continue to run throughout the year, aimed at providing valuable information on the signs, symptoms and how to speak to a person struggling with the mental health in the workplace. Chair of Trustees, Michael Morris, is delighted to have received the funding. “We knew that there was going to be huge competition across the county for this funding, so to receive full allocation for both projects quantify what we have achieved with dementia care and mental health in Spalding and this extra funding allows us to further facilitate more initiatives and help more people in the area. To register your place on any of the above projects, or to find out more, please contact Tonic Health on 01775 725059 or visit www.tonic-health.co.uk

Bakkavor support for Spalding Air Cadets 1406 Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) over the years, has always enjoyed helping in the community with events, and in doing so developing good relationships with a lot of Spalding companies, recently, we welcomed a visit from Terry Moore and Pat Baxter from Spalding Bakkavor. As Terry and Pat explained, Bakkavor had kindly organised a donation in the form of a cheque to present to the Squadron to say thank you for our involvement with their annual events. The picture shows Flt Lt Simon Rogers, OC 1406 Sqn receiving the donation cheque from Terry Moore (right) with Pat Baxter (centre)

and cadets in the back ground. The monies donated from Bakkavor will go a very long way to help the Squadron in various ways, from sport equipment, gliding opportunities, access for cadets to museums, air shows and many, many other things. If you are between 13 and 17 and interested in joining Air Cadets, call 01775 725185 (Parade evenings) Tuesdays and Fridays, 7pm – 9:30pm for more information, or visit our HQ at the ACF/ATC Centre, Castle Sports Complex, Pinchbeck Road, Spalding. Spalding Street Pastors

The Spalding Street Pastors are a group of dedicated volunteers from local churches who take to the town centre every Friday and Saturday night. Their main aim is to support, care for, listen to and help vulnerable people who are out on the streets, ensuring they are on-hand to provide blankets, flip-flops and bottled water. The Street Pastors are first-aid trained in order to respond to minor injuries or illness. The group, which was set up in July 2013, also work to keep the streets clear of danger by picking up bottles and sweeping up broken glass. Cllr Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Protection, recently accompanied the Street Pastors on a patrol, as did councillors Angela Harrison and Tracy Carter and they are keen to raise awareness of the Street Pastor’s selfless work. Cllr Casson said: “Seeing the Street Pastors in action was inspiring, they are extremely valued by people in the town and those who work in the night time economy. “They provide a reassuring presence well into the early hours and it was

notable to see people coming up to them and thanking them for making them feel safer. “The Pastors feel that they are putting something back into their community and get a real sense of pride out of what they do. “One of the council’s main priorities is to create safer communities so we fully support what the Pastors are doing and will help ensure that their excellent work is continued.” Marion Sandhu, Co-ordinator of the Spalding Street Pastors, said: “We are looking for people aged 18 and over who are church members, who would consider volunteering with us. “We will ensure you are fully trained and offer you a unique and beneficial experience as being a Street Pastor is very rewarding. The people of Spalding seem to appreciate the work of the Street Pastors and always speak very positively of us.” For further information on getting involved or if you would like to financially support Spalding Street Pastors please email spalding@streetpastors.org.uk or visit https://streetpastors.org/locations/ spalding/

Licensing Event Licensed traders across South Holland are being invited to a free event aimed at refreshing their understanding of licensing issues and the various pitfalls to be aware of, prior to the Christmas period. The ‘Christmas Licensing Workshop’ takes place in the Council Chamber at South Holland District Council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding, on Monday, November 13 from 2.30pm to 5.30pm. Organised by the council’s Licensing Committee, it will feature speakers from Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, Trading Standards, Drugs Awareness, The Spalding Street Pastors and the Environmental Health Training and Consultancy (EHT&C). They will take turns to guide guests through up-to-date licensing information and current issues which may impact upon their business. This will prove invaluable for businesses such as shops, pubs and off-licences as they prepare for one of the busiest times of year. Angela Harrison, Chair of the Licensing Committee, said: “The event will be a great opportunity for licence holders to come along and speak with people who can refresh their understanding of the various dos and don’ts involved with licensing. “A big part of the event will be communicating the most up-to-date information which licence holders may not be up to speed with.” Tracey Carter, Vice Chair of the Committee, added: “Each speaker will work in roughly 30 minute slots and there will be a chance for guests to network and ask any questions. “We’re confident that the event will prove extremely beneficial for licence holders and we look forward to seeing them there.” Guests are invited to attend from 2pm when refreshments will be served. Everyone who attends will receive a free information pack. For more information about the event call and to book places call 01775 761161 or email licensing@ sholland.gov.uk www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 5

Homeless Programme An intensive programme of work to help 120 of the most vulnerable homeless people across Lincolnshire has been launched. ACTion Lincs, a county-wide partnership has been set up to provide life-changing support and tackle some of the most complex homelessness cases in Lincolnshire. Once accepted onto the longterm programme, support will be provided to the 120 individuals in any setting whether that is on the street, in prison, in hospital or someone’s home. Traditionally, support has been shorter term and hasn’t benefitted from such integration between services. As previously reported, the project has been awarded £1.3 million of Social Impact Bond (SIB) funding from Central Government. It is one of only eight projects nationally to receive this funding and is the first SIB project to launch from this funding. Delivery will be led by Charity P3, and is the result of a successful and innovative partnership involving Lincolnshire County Council, all seven District Councils, Health, Addaction and Integrated Offender Management Teams (ARC). The ACTion Lincs service will be tasked with achieving specific outcomes including: Helping each person to access and sustain their own accommodation Access to both mental health and drug and alcohol treatment services, and support to help people sustain this where required Help with accessing training, education and employment Michelle Howard, Chairman of the Lincolnshire Homelessness Strategy Group said: “We are really excited to be launching this innovative programme of work, which will really help to transform

the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in Lincolnshire. “DCLG’s Homelessness Prevention Programme has enabled us to work creatively across borders which we would not have achieved by adopting a traditional approach to tackling the issues.” Lincolnshire has seen an increase in homelessness demand and rough sleeping. On top of this there has been a rise in the complexity of needs presented by some of the most vulnerable people and current service models are often unable to meet their needs. Michelle explained that despite the best efforts, traditional methods of engagement were not meeting the needs of people and a new approach was needed. Jonny Goldsmith, Operations Manager for Charity P3 will oversee the delivery of the ACTion Lincs project. He said: “Crucially, by offering support over a prolonged period of time and by being flexible to meet the needs of the people that we are working with, we hope to give them the best opportunity to bring about lasting change in their lives.” ACTion Lincs will be delivered by a team of link workers, including a specialist drug and alcohol recovery worker and a specialist mental health practitioner seconded from local organisations. The specialist support offered through these link workers is crucial to the success of the project. Natasha Swift, Service Manager for Addaction in Lincolnshire said “Addaction welcomes this highly innovative and holistic approach to tackling homelessness. ACTion Lincs will provide long term, holistic, individual care to homeless people and we’re delighted to offer one of our own specialist

substance misuse workers to work in this worthwhile project.” Chris Ashwell, Divisional Manager at Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said: “There is a strong link between homelessness and poor mental health with up to 70 percent of homeless people suffering from mental health problems. This new project looks at all aspects of homelessness and we are pleased that mental health services can play a part in tackling the problem.” Councillor Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “I really welcome this 4-year programme to tackle the scourge of rough sleeping. By working cooperatively across the County we can offer more comprehensive help to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.” Bob Ledger, Director of Housing at City of Lincoln

Council, said: “There is a pressing need for a new approach to tackling rough sleeping in Lincolnshire towns and no more so than in Lincoln. “From the support work that currently happens we know this issue is not just about homelessness. The individuals involved often have complex needs and require the support of a range of agencies working together to help them get off the streets and reconnected into society. This initiative offers that joint approach for the first time as part of a single project. “Lincoln is not alone in having this issue but through this Lincolnshire-wide project we are the first to trial this new approach. Other towns and cities will be keen to see how we get on. The launch of this project is very welcome news”. Updates on progress made by the project will be announced in due course.

arty conference season is now thankfully over along with Leadership bids for the time being at least. The implications and uncertainty around Brexit are already starting to have an effect on the workforce in South Holland with a local company recently telling me that agencies were unable to find a workforce for them on one occasion, which has knock on implications with supply to the supermarkets and contracts when suppliers fail to meet their obligations. South Holland has very low unemployment which is great but does provide a considerable challenge with many companies in the area both expanding and requiring more and more employees. To resolve some of these challenges both large and small companies in the area are investing more in automation and robotics and are are also working with the Skills Service to provide our young people with the courses and training needed by our local businesses. There will also be careers fairs in 2018 that are much more hands on than usual which will be aimed at not just young people but parents and the community as a whole. Transport Connect, a trading arm of Lincolnshire County Council are also providing mini buses for the early shifts at one of our bigger companies in the area, for those people who do not have a car and would otherwise be unable to get to work. The mini buses then

continue on to do bespoke school runs, so benefitting the wider community. There are also some businesses providing accommodation for workers travelling from further afield to try to bridge the gap in the short term at least. Clearly there are considerable challenges ahead but we will continue working with businesses, agencies and job centres to solve continuing workforce challenges. My quest to get a Heritage Action Zone for Holbeach continues apace and we now await the result of our initial expression of interest to see if we can proceed to the next round. Our current application now goes to the National panel and we hope to hear back from them in November / December. The High Street in Holbeach has received a boost in that the most run down Shop at 17 High Street has now nearly completed its renovations and will be opening in the next month. It has already made a difference to the look of that part of the Street and with some recently opened shops in Park Road and Boston Road, that look really good and just in time for Christmas, things are starting to look up. There is still a huge amount to do and our campaign ‘ Love Holbeach’ is now getting underway to keep the momentum going.

Attention Small Business Owners – there is a better way

The old way of small business record keeping Any of us who have family or friends who run a small business can picture the scene of a hunched figure, head down, grumbling away to themselves surrounded by hundreds of receipts and pieces of paper. Not many business owners like “writing up the books” and the wasted evenings and weekends spent doing something they hate. Wouldn’t that time be much better pushing your business forwards, or even spending time with your loved ones? Thankfully there is a better way. The new way of keeping records We can give you back that time with your

family, that work you had to turn down, or just that couple of hours to put your feet up. All while making sure that the information on which you make business decisions is accurate and up to date, not just based on a hunch. No more waiting for months after the year-end to find out if your profits are up or down – and all of this can be at your fingertips and accessed from anywhere on your smartphone or tablet. There have been huge advances in accounting software recently and we are encouraging our clients to embrace this new technology through our D&T ONLINE service. With the right training and tools, most of the information that you need to

record can be picked up directly from your bank and from receipts that you have taken a photograph of and long since binned. No more lost receipts and wasted money paying tax where you should not have to and no more making ill-informed business decisions. Also, if you are planning any significant investment where you need assistance from your bank they will listen much more sympathetically when they see you are someone who knows what they are about and is in tune with the pulse of their business. couldn’t do enough to help with gluten free options. Usually very limited choice at other venues but lots to choose from and really nice. Surroundings lovely. Would definitely go again and try Sunday lunch. TRIPADVISOR, FEB 2017 The popularity of this restaurant continues to grow as more people hear about it so I struggled to get a table (to be fair it is the season where everyone goes out for a special Christmas meal) but thankfully they managed to squeeze me in for Sunday lunch. Yes it was very busy - however that didn’t stop us from getting great service from the staff. I started with the Ham Hock Tureen, which I ordered because I enjoyed it so much last time I was here. For my main I had some really good rib of beef - I was surprised when I was asked how I would like it. I am used to just getting it how it is carved so it was a pleasant surprise to

be able to ask for it medium rare. This was served with a selection of buttered vegetables and home made cauliflower cheese. I am not usually a fan of cauliflower cheese but this has converted me as it had a rich cheddery flavour - not like the bland watery offerings that put me off this dish many years ago. For dessert I tried the sticky toffee pudding as that felt the most fitting for the weather - proper comfort food. One thing to note was the great wine suggestions from the staff. I had the tempranillo that they suggested for the beef, it complemented it very well. The young girls who looked after us were bright and bubbly throughout and made sure we were happy with everything throughout the meal. I look forward to going back in the new year. Advice

The Data Protection and CCTV The Data Protection Act (DPA) lays down rules and standards for the collection and use of information about individuals (known as personal data), the accuracy and security of that information, and the rights of individuals with respect to information held about them by others. It does not prevent information being collected or disclosed, but regulates and limits the circumstances in which this can take place. It applies to computerised records and also to certain paper (manual) records. The Information Commissioner is the independent supervisory authority who is responsible for enforcing the DPA and for providing advice and assistance to data controllers and data subjects. A data controller is a person working for an organisation who decides the purposes for which information is held by the organisation and the way in which that information is to be processed. A data subject is the person about whom personal data is processed. What are personal data Personal data are information from which a living individual, the data subject, can be personally identified, and include facts, opinions and intentions. They include data where the individual can be identified either from the data itself, or from that data and other information held by the data controller, or which is likely to come into the possession of the data controller. Examples of personal data include:•an individual’s health record •an entry about an individual on the police national computer •an e-mail about a particular individual’s conduct at work •an individual’s credit reference file. Does the Data Protection Act apply to CCTV CCTV recordings and photographs from

which an individual can be identified are subject to the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) if:•they contain personal data •they are held on computer or stored on tapes or discs in a relevant filing system; and •if none of the exemptions apply. In order to qualify as personal data under the Act, photographic images such as CCTV recordings must relate to an individual and affect that person’s privacy. This means that the individual must be the focus of the image(s) and that the image(s) must contain significant information about the individual. For example, CCTV pictures of people collected randomly in a public place, for example, a shopping centre, are unlikely to be covered by the DPA because, in most cases, they are not personal data. On the other hand, if CCTV is used to focus on the activities of particular people, either by directing cameras at an individual’s activities, looking out for particular individuals, or examining recorded CCTV images to find things out about the people in them, for example, identifying a criminal or a witness, then some of the images recorded will be covered by the DPA. CCTV and photographic images which are subject to the DPA must comply with the data protection principles and with individual

rights under the Act The Information Commissioner has drawn up a Code of Practice for the users of CCTV which, although not legally binding, represents the Commissioner’s opinion of how data protection requirements under the DPA should be implemented. The use of CCTV and other photographic images may also be covered by the common law of confidence and the Human Rights Act. You may object to the intrusive nature of a neighbour’s security cameras and may have other grounds for action. For example, disclosure of CCTV images to a third party without the consent of the subject might constitute a breach of confidence, depending on the circumstances. It might also take the processing outside the scope of the DPA’s domestic purposes exemption, in which case you may wish to seek advice from

Boston College Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?

Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

The College held its first open days of the new academic year at both the Boston and Spalding campuses and was delighted to see such a high turnout, with hundreds of prospective students coming along to see all of the subject areas in action and get a taste of what is to come next September. As well as getting to see the Uniformed Public Services students setting up camp, visitors had the opportunity to get involved in some of the many activities

Ayscoughfee Hall School As part of their topic of ‘Super Heroes’ Reception children have been in to Spalding to visit the market in order to buy a variety of vegetables which were then turned into ‘Super Heroes’. They had the added bonus of meeting some real life Super Heroes…our local firefighters! They have also enjoyed a visit from a Paramedic who allowed the children to use some of his medical equipment and try on items of uniform. Year 6 have been learning about India and enjoyed a fantastic day of experiences with Sunita. They learnt Indian dances (traditional and ‘Bollywood’), heard stories, and dressed in Indian clothing. They also had a delicious lunch at 1498 The Spice Affair and learnt how to make naan bread. The whole school from Year 1 upwards had a day with Andy Salmon, aka Sir Link-a-Lot, who taught children, staff and parents a variety of strategies for remembering spelling, historical dates and

other facts from the world of science and geography. In cookery, Year 2 have been making courgette and leek soup whilst the Juniors are busy making mincemeat for their mince pies after half term…and Christmas!

taking place, including bridge building and 3D printing in Engineering, sensory activities with Early Years and a chance to get up close and personal with the wide variety of animals in Animal Care. Food tasting in the Catering department was also well received! The College’s award winning impartial Careers Advisers were also on hand giving guidance to those who were unsure about their next steps.

Spalding Parish Church Day School On Friday 29th September, a team of children represented Spalding Parish C of E Day School in the Peterborough Stem Taster Day which was a celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics inspired by Ada Lovelace Day. The children faced challenges in the four areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. They were tasked with solving science based problems, building engineering structures, working on forensics puzzles, solving brain teasers and taking part in some fantastic coding activities. Universities and businesses who were involved in the day were: The University Centre Peterborough, Anglia Water, the Escape Rooms and the BGL group. It was a fantastic day to celebrate and encourage learning through a variety of challenges which really got all the children working as a team and challenging themselves. Kim Bird and Alison Ladbrook were really proud of the creativity, enjoyment and learning of each child in the team. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved.

Options at 16 and beyond There are many choices to be made when it comes to your education post-16. After GCSEs you will need to think carefully about your skills and strengths and apply them either to further studies or to the work place in the form of Apprenticeships or volunteer work. Either way, now is the time to begin to decide how you would like to shape your future.

S

taying in education does not mean you have to stay in school. While joining your school’s sixth form might feel like the most comfortable thing to do, it is worthwhile looking into local colleges as well as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Volunteering if you feel like you are ready for the world of work. If you would like to study A-levels, you may have a sixth form attached to the school you currently study at but it is worth taking a look at other sixth forms in the area as the courses offered will vary. Local colleges will also offer A-levels so make sure your search is a thorough one. Alongside A-levels you will be familiar with such as English, Maths and Science you can study subjects which may be new to you such as Film Studies, Business and Law. Your GCSE grades will determine where you are able to study so take into consideration the subjects that you do well in and enjoy when you are deciding which subjects to take forward. If you are more interested in learning a trade and getting busy with practical lessons, then a vocational qualification may be a good fit for you. Many vocational qualifications do not need you to have any prior experience, however most courses will still require grade

A-C (new grades 9-4) passes in English and maths. Should you not achieve those grades you must continue to study them as part of your post-16 education, so you may still be accepted onto the course of your choice. This area has some excellent colleges which offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses, with some even offering university level courses which would mean you could stay close to home, reducing your costs! Make sure you do your research to narrow down your options as you will find that colleges offer many courses. Start by visiting websites for information and check out when open events and taster days are so you can visit and get a feel for the places and the areas you would like to study. If you are eager to get to work then an Apprenticeship is a great way to learn ‘on-the-job’ and gain quality work-based training whilst also getting paid. You will gain experience in the workplace but also have the support of a college where you will spend some of your time learning in the classrooms (or workshops, depending on the type of work placement). If you want to do an Apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready then a Traineeship could be a better option for you. Completed over a much shorter

Leaving school can be a very daunting process for young adults, if you feel that you’re ready to leave school and are considering college, it is important to think about what you want for your future.

period of time it gives you the opportunity to see how you fit within a business and sample the type of work you might do. Once you have gained the confidence and abilities then the next step could be on to an Apprenticeship. You also have the option to study for a qualification and also carry out some volunteering work in between your studies. Not only can you gain work experience in an industry you hope to one day work in and develop skills which will look good on your CV, volunteering can also be a good inclusion when you are preparing to fill our your UCAS forms and personal statements for university. Boston College gives the following advice for those thinking about their next steps: Leaving school can be a very daunting process for young adults, if you feel that you’re ready to leave school and are considering college, it is important to think about what you want for your future. Explore both academic and vocational skills based training. Ask yourself a few questions, would you like to go onto university? Would you prefer to gain a university level course locally? Are you happier learning by practical application rather than in a classroom? Hopefully this will help guide you as to which course would be most suitable for you. As the Top Performing College in Lincolnshire for the last three years, here are Boston College we offer impartial advice and guidance to not only our prospective and current learners but also to anyone who needs advice on making their next step in education. It is important whatever route you take after school, that it is the right one for you.

Follow Your Dreams

Spalding couple Nigel and Louise Chapman and their son, Kian, are travelling the world during a family gap period. After a summer volunteering at family activity centres in the UK, the trio started the abroad leg of their adventure in early September. Nigel and Louise are road schooling Kian, who was deregistered from his primary school prior to the trip. Here, Nigel tells Simply how things are going.

F

our weeks into our adventure and the amount of memories we’ve made and experiences we’ve enjoyed already is very rewarding and satisfying. Our main goal when we hatched the plan was to see and experience fresh parts of our world with Kian, forming memories which would stay with us forever. If it all suddenly ended tomorrow we’ve achieved that.

We spent three weeks on the west coast of America, getting a small glimpse of the glitz but it was the extraordinary beauty which was just so vast that will remain with us longest. Covering almost 1,000 miles between San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, Death Valley, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and Los Angeles gave us an insight into a breathtaking scenery we’d coveted in print. To experience it all firsthand was staggering. We used a combination of public transport, a hire car and the prize of a week’s rental of a small campervan to drink it all in. It enabled simple but stunning

pleasures such as pulling up at the roadside to enjoy a bowl of cereal in the early morning sunshine while looking down on a glacier-formed gorge 6,000 feet below. During fall in the States, we had very warm days and a mixture of some clammy nights and others of freezing temperatures while under canvas. Kian has grasped the experience too, relishing the chance to gain three Junior Ranger badges by completing workbooks in San Francisco Historical Maritime Park, Yosemite and Grand Canyon. He loved taking the pledge to continue his conservation work and respect for our natural environment long

after this trip has finished. He celebrated his eighth birthday in Tokyo during the Japan leg of our trip. What a wonderful nation we found that to be, with such welcoming people. Highlights here included catching a sumo tournament, bathing in a hot springs spa (including pools of red wine and coffee!) and catching a glimpse of Mount Fuji while crossing a 400m pedestrian suspension bridge. And a fabulous experience was being invited to have Japanese green tea made for us on the lawn of an observatory on the shores of Lake Ashi. By the time this article is

Countdown to Christmas at Vancouver Quarter

T published we’ll be in New Zealand, travelling the North and South islands in a campervan for about four weeks. Louise was fortunate enough to visit Australia and New Zealand for three months ten years ago. Her memories are still vivid and she’s looking forward to taking Kian and I to some of her favourite spots and discovering plenty of new ones. After New Zealand, we head to Australia and a much-anticipated fortnight with my daughter, Tia, who is squeezing in a holiday during her university studies. Then we’ve got Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia in our sights - if our budget stretches. It’s a

juggling game keeping on top of it but whenever there’s a sacrifice or saving to be made we remind ourselves that it could mean an extra day or two on the other end of our trip. We’re extremely fortunate to be in the position to be able to do this once in a lifetime opportunity and are determined to make the most of it every day - even if that means rice for more mealtimes than we’d prefer!

here are plenty of reasons to visit King’s Lynn during the countdown to Christmas. There will be festive LateNight Shopping events, an enchanting Christmas market, the return of the popular Bauble Trail, and Father Christmas will be jetting in to meet children in his grotto. Stores around the town centre will remain open until 8pm and will be accompanied by festive street entertainers, music and activities for all

On December 10, there will be a town-wide Bauble Trail for families to take part in, picking up a goodie bag on completion as well as the opportunity to win a very special prize ahead of Christmas! Father Christmas will be visiting King’s Lynn every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday right up to Christmas. Family life

Firework Magic F

ireworks night is a rare time when the gulf between children and adults momentarily blurs as both stand, neck craned skyward, captivated and united in their ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ of delight at the unfolding visual spectacle. Watching fireworks burst onto an ink black sky and transforming into a multitude of patterns, it’s difficult not to be impressed and awed by these beautiful man-made creations. Fireworks are a visual feast. Some spread like delicate fingers dipped in luminous paint arcing across black paper, others blossom like exotic blooms captured in time lapse. Watching a heart-thumping display I can’t help marvelling at how fireworks designers pack the charges to create just the right effect, or synchronise eruptions to coincide with musical crescendos. Fans of fireworks, big and small are going to love these fantastic ideas for exploring science and art at home and recreating the visual spectacle of Fireworks night. Salty fireworks If you’ve never tried it the crystals create a wonderfully sparkly effect, perfect for fireworks and some simple store cupboard additions transform these into delightful fizzing rockets. Mix some food colouring or watercolour paint with salt and bicarbonate of soda and apply in messy splodges to black paper. Using a clean drinking straw, blow the salty water so that it spreads like the creeping fingers of a bursting firework. Leave to dry and children (and adults) will

be delighted by the beautifully textured sparkly effect of the salt crystals. For more fireworks fun add a couple of drops of vinegar to the centre of each splodge and watch the salty paint fizz and bubble like a Catherine Wheel. Alternatively paint the vinegar onto plain paper then add the salt for a fizzing surprise! Magic Fireworks This activity will no doubt take you back to your childhood. It has spawned a whole shelf of etching products, but all you need to recreate it is some plain white card, coloured crayons, black paint and utensils or clay tools. Simply cover the page with the coloured crayon then paint over with black paint until completely covered – two layers may be needed. Invite your child to use the tools to recreate some of their favourite fireworks and enjoy their wonder as the magical coloured fireworks spring to life on the page. Edible Sparklers Children and adults will love these gorgeous edible ‘sparklers’ which are completely safe and almost healthy! You will need some plain bread sticks or even pretzels, some milk chocolate and a selection of cake decorations. Warm the chocolate in a bowl and help the children dip the ends of the sticks in chocolate then a selection of hundreds and thousands. Leave to dry – if you can wait! Cable Tie Fireworks Not all firework art has to be messy. These unusual multi-coloured cable tie fireworks are wonderful for occupying fidgety fingers and practicing fine motor skills and amazingly effective. Form a circle with a clear cable tie then secure coloured ties to this to make radiating petal patterns that can be hung from the ceiling or windows to recapture the thrill of fireworks. Firework Dens Not all firework art has to be messy. this to make radiating Children will love the idea of creating a dark den space indoors during the day so cover a pop up tent with blankets or a tarpaulin and arrange a fleecy rug on the floor. Add an assortment of light-up sensory toys to a feely bag for the children to discover and explore. Quality flashing, bumpy, and vibrating disco, meteor, spiky and magic eye balls are sure to captivate and delight as will a light up bubble gun, flashing kinetic wheel and the amazing Sensory Stick, all available from Play to Z and other good stockists. Simply sit back and watch the children create their own magical firework displays in the dark. Fizzy Science With fluorescent fabric dyes now cheaply and widely available, tie-dying a plain white T shirt with bursting fireworks is a great rainy day project for young and old. Other great science ideas include Exploding fireworks using food colouring, milk and washing-up liquid, bake in the dark clay and Fireworks in a jar, where, if you’re lucky, you’ll witness a chemical reaction as you mix food colourings and sunflower oil with water. November wouldn’t be the same without fireworks but as these fun and sensory activities show, the fun does not have to stop there. You’ll definitely want to try these at home!

The Importance of Warming up and Cooling Down By Verity Wright, www.runverity.com Many runners lace up their running shoes and head out the door saying they haven’t got time to do a warm up and sometimes it is very tempting to do this especially if you are pushed for time. If you are new to running it is important to get into good habits of doing a pre-exercise warm up, it only needs to take 5 minutes but the benefits of a good warm up are too good to miss, especially if you want longevity in your running.

W

arm ups allow your body to gradually adjust and prepare, not only physically but mentally for the harder work to come, if you are well prepared your run should be easier and you should run more efficiently. Warming up allows your heart and breathing to gradually make the transition from normal resting state to exercise state, this increase in oxygen will help enhance your blood flow to the heart, bringing oxygen and blood to the muscles and raise your body temperature all in steady and controlled way so that you don’t go from 0 to 100 within a few seconds. If you run before you are ready you run the risk of running off too quickly and burning out before you’ve even started and risk damaging cold muscles. Over time and if you warm up consistently you will improve your muscle efficiency, improve your balance and co-ordination as well as enabling you to become more flexible. Overall this will help you to reduce the risk of injury as you are not putting too much strain on your muscles too quickly.

Quick and Easy Warm Up 1) Brisk walking helps your body adjust from not moving to moving as you use the same muscles in walking as you do in running. This will help increase the blood flow to your muscles as you prepare to go from walking to running. 2) Dynamic stretches are different from static stretches as you are using controlled movements to improve your range of movement in your arms and legs.

• Try circling your arms forwards and backwards 10 times, this will help the blood flow get to your muscles and make your arms work more efficiently. Stand, balanced, on one leg and swing the opposite leg backwards and forwards, again 10 times, stand as tall and as upright as you can. Repeat with the other leg. • Skipping is a great way to increase your heart rate and is very similar to running as you are bounding off one leg and is great for co-ordination. Skip from one leg to another for 10 metres, as high as you can, turn around and skip back to where you started from. The cool down is equally as important as the warm up; it’s very tempting to miss a cool down as you head back through your

front door or get straight back into your car. Your body needs to cool down and recover, basically the cool down is the warm up in reverse and is just as important. If you stop running abruptly this could potentially lead to cramps, soreness or dizziness especially if you pushed yourself on the last bit of your run. The purpose of the cool down is to help your body return to its pre-exercise state. Cooling down helps your heart rate and breathing return to its normal state.

Quick and Easy Cool Down Walking helps to bring your heart rate back down to its normal state and allows your breathing to become more regulated. Once your breathing has returned to normal you can start to stretch. 1) Stretch your arms by crossing them around your body as though giving yourself a big hug . 2) Bend down and try touch your toes without bending your knees.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Health & Beauty

Is it an ear infection? The symptoms of an ear infection usually start quickly and include: • pain inside the ear • a high temperature of 38C or above • being sick • a lack of energy • difficulty hearing • discharge running out of the ear • feeling of pressure or fullness inside the ear • itching and irritation in and around the ear • scaly skin in and around the ear Young children and babies with an ear infection may also: • rub or pull their ear • not react to some sounds • be irritable or restless • be off their food • keep losing their balance

the-counter pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs may also be used to manage your symptoms. If you’re still experiencing cold or allergy symptoms, you may be advised to take a decongestant, nasal steroids, or an antihistamine. Another helpful technique is called autoinsufflation. It’s meant to help clear your eustachian tubes. You do this by squeezing your nose, closing your mouth, and very gently exhaling. This can send air through the eustachian tubes to help drain them.

Treating outer ear infections Treatment The type of ear infection you have will determine the type of treatment. In many cases of middle and outer ear infections, antibiotics are necessary.

Treating middle ear infections You may be prescribed antibiotics. Some antibiotics may be taken orally. Others can be applied directly to the site of the infection with ear drops. Medications for pain, such as over-

The outer ear should be carefully cleaned. That should be followed by the application of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory medications on your ear. Antibiotics may be prescribed if your doctor determines that the infection is bacterial. If you have a viral infection, you may simply need to tend to the irritation on your ear and wait for the infection to resolve itself. Depending on the type of virus involved, more specialised treatment may be necessary.

Dealing with an Ingrown toenail An ingrown toenail develops when the sides of the toenail grow into the surrounding skin. The nail curls and pierces the skin, which becomes red, swollen and tender. The big toe is often affected, either on one or both sides. Other possible symptoms include: • pain if pressure is placed on the toe • inflammation of the skin at the end of the toe • a build-up of fluid in the area surrounding the toe • an overgrowth of skin around the affected toe • bleeding • white or yellow pus coming from the affected area When to see your GP See your GP or podiatrist (foot care specialist) if your ingrown toenail is badly inflamed, bleeding or has pus coming from it, because it may be infected. It’s also important to seek medical advice if you have diabetes and an ingrown toenail. Having diabetes could affect how your toenail heals. 26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Causes of ingrown toenails A number of things can cause an ingrown toenail to develop, including: • badly cut toenails – cutting your toenails too short, or cutting the edges, will encourage the skin to fold over your nail and the nail to grow into the skin • wearing tight-fitting shoes, socks or tights – this places pressure on the skin around your toenail; the skin may be pierced if it’s pressed on to your toenail • sweaty feet – if the skin around your toenails is soft, it’s easier for your nail to pierce it and embed itself within it • injury – for example, stubbing your toe can sometimes cause an ingrown toenail to develop • natural shape of the nail – the sides of curved or fan-shaped toenails are more likely to press into the skin surrounding the nail A fungal nail infection can cause your toenail to thicken or widen.

Treating ingrown toenails Without treatment, an ingrown toenail can become infected, so it’s important that you: • keep your feet clean by washing them regularly with soap and water • change your socks regularly • cut your toenails straight across to stop them digging into the surrounding skin • gently push the skin away from the nail using a cotton bud (this may be easier after using a small amount of olive oil to • wear comfortable shoes that fit properly Surgery may be recommended if your toenail doesn’t improve. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, this may involve either: • partial nail avulsion – removing part of your toenail • total nail avulsion – removing your whole toenail

An Alternative Christmas Lunch?

P

ut off by the stress, cost and complication of cooking a roast dinner thousands of families are planning to make Christmas Dinner that much more special – by abandoning the kitchen and booking into their favourite restaurant. That suggests thousands of families across Britain have decided to give up on peeling spuds and sprouts and worrying about overcooking the turkey in favour of letting a professional chef do the work for them. But why? People want

to enjoy their Christmas dinner, rather than spend all day preparing it then washing up. There’s also such a variety of menu that people expect nowadays that one person cooking just can’t cater for all the family. 15 per cent chose to eat at an Indian or south Asian restaurant, while 11 per cent went for Italian, another 11 per cent for French and six per cent for ‘modern European’. So whatever you fancy a traditional home lunch, a 6 course meal cooked for you or a Balti at the local curry house, the choice is yours!

Fun and Easy Christmas Party Ideas Put Ugly-Sweater Craft Party

Host a spin-off of the traditional Christmas party theme. For this ugly sweater party, don’t wear your ugliest. Instead, bring it, cut it up, and try to make the prettiest craft from the scraps! Guests will vote on their favorite at the end of an evening filled with holiday music, Christmas treats, and sweater trimmings.

Wreath-Making Party

Memories are sure to be made when you have friends over or a small works gathering for a hands-on wreath-making Christmas party. Provide guests with wire wreath forms from a home store, and set out the gear: evergreen clippings, greenery, sturdy clippers, wire, florists picks, and glue guns. Then let friends or colleagues amp up their wreaths with easy add-ins like pinecones and berry sprigs. Bonus: Set up a hot cocoa bar and nibbles inside to shake off the chill.

White Elephant Gift Exchange

Everyone loves a Christmas party with a wacky gift exchange. Set a price limit, and have each guest bring a prewrapped gift. When it’s time for the exchange, everyone will draw a number and pass the gifts around.

Snow Day Sledding Party

If you get snowed in, there’s no reason for you to stay inside! Watch the weather forecast for a weekend when heavy snowfall is predicted, then set a tentative date with family and friends to enjoy a sledding Chistmas party. When the flurries start to fall, bundle up, grab a few warm drinks and sleds, and head to the hill. Spend an afternoon (or just an hour or two) sledding, then retreat back inside for a warm dinner. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 31

Firework safety this Guy Fawkes Fireworks often play a big part in celebrations – like Bonfire Night, Diwali and Chinese New Year. However, fireworks are explosives and burn at high temperatures, so they need careful handling and storage. Find out about firework safety and the law about their use. Firework safety checklist Figures have shown that more children than adults get hurt by fireworks. If you are thinking of using fireworks as part of your celebrations, you should follow the steps listed below. Before your firework display Preparation is key to enjoying fireworks safely, so: • don’t buy fireworks from anywhere you’re not sure about, like a van or a temporary, unlicensed market stall • only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark – this shows that the firework meets British or European safety standards (a reputable shop will know this) • follow the instructions on each firework – read them in daylight or by torchlight, never by a naked flame • make suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off Catherine wheels or rockets Things you will need on the night It’s easy to get a few household things together, these are: • a closed metal box to store the fireworks – take them out one at a time • a bucket of water – to cool sparklers and put out any small fires • eye protection and gloves • a bucket of earth to stick fireworks in Lighting fireworks Follow these simple guidelines to stay safe: • only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks • don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks • light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper • make sure everyone stands well back • never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode Sparklers Sparklers are fun, but always: • supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five • light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves • put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water Other tips on the night Finally, follow these other rules for a safe night: • keep pets indoors – most animals get very scared by the lights and noise from fireworks • never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them • never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire • take care around bonfires – all clothes, even those labelled ‘low flammability’ - can catch fire Bonfires Building a bonfire Fire can spread easily, so where and how you build your bonfire is

important. If you have a bonfire, follow these simple guidelines: • warn your neighbours beforehand - they are much less likely to complain • light the bonfire at a time least likely to affect your neighbours - eg not on a warm day when people will be in their garden • only burn dry material not damp, which causes more smoke • build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • check there are no cables - like telephone wires - above the bonfire • don’t use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going – it may get out of control quickly Bonfire safety tips Once the bonfire is lit, make sure you: • keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby - in case of emergencies • don’t leave the bonfire unattended • keep children and pets away from the bonfire • don’t throw any fireworks into the fire • don’t burn aerosols, tyres, canisters or anything containing foam or paint - many produce toxic fumes and some containers may explode, causing injury • Once the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 33

Home & Garden

Cracking down on winter crime As summer fades and winter draws closer, it’s time to turn our attention to keeping our homes, garden and other property secure.

I

t’s a sad fact of life but crime rates, in particular burglaries, increase during winter – as potential thieves have the cover of darkness to work under. This coupled with the festive season - which brings greater demand to the black market, while the abundance of presents creates increased opportunities to steal – also means we need to be more vigilant. Don’t be a victim - you can do your bit to protect your house and belongings by following this security advice from Lincolnshire Police  When you go out, always close and lock the external doors and windows, even if you will just be away for a short time.  Close your curtains when it gets dark so people can’t see in.  Close and lock your doors and windows when you go to bed.  Remove all valuables from out of sight – especially Christmas presents. Don’t leave them under the tree on show.  When it comes to Christmas, dispose of packaging carefully – the wrapping and boxes you leave outside your house on bin day only advertises what’s inside.  Keep spare keys safe and out of sight. Would-be offenders could not only break into your property, but could also steal your vehicle too.  Visible burglar alarms, good lighting and carefully directed security lighting can put a burglar off. Remember, less darks spots means less hiding places for someone who does not want to be seen.  Never leave your garages, sheds or outbuildings unlocked. Your tools inside could prove to be very useful to a would-be offender who wants to gain access to your property.  Ensure that your garden is just as secure as your home. Do not leave anything of value such as bikes, children’s play equipment or

34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

gardening tools on full view. Lock them away and keep them out of sight if they are not being used.  If you are going away on holiday, remember to cancel milk and paper deliveries etc. Ask a responsible neighbour to make sure that any post is pushed right through the letterbox. Ensure all your windows and doors are locked. Use timer switches for lights and radios, as this will create the impression someone is in.  Keep plants, trees and bushes well maintained if they are at the front of your property. This will provide natural surveillance for you as a homeowner and will also ensure would-be offenders can’t use overgrown trees as climbing aids or hiding places.  Always keep gates locked when not in use. Easy access to a property is often the trigger that makes it an attractive target. So don’t make it easy for them.  An intruder alarm installed and used properly can deter a burglar. Seek expert advice when installing an alarm and ensure that they are members of the Security Systems Inspectorate Body as they fit British Standards.  Property marking is an effective way of deterring thieves. By marking things such as electrical goods with your postcode and house number, you can reduce the opportunity for thieves to sell the goods on. Property marking also increases the chances of returning your goods, if you should happen to become a burglary victim.  If you have a heating oil or diesel tank in your garden make sure it is protected too – use close shackled padlocks and consider fitting a remote electronic oil level gauge, which will set off an audible alarm if the level of the tank drops suddenly. While low energy dusk ‘til dawn lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity.

Home & Garden

It’s a drink, it’s a cleaner…it’s Cola! It seems like cola is making a name for itself. No longer just a sweet tasting carbonated beverage, its uses have become much more widespread from cleaning rust stains to tenderising steaks. Now I’m sure as a kid you heard all the reasons why drinking cola was bad for you. ‘It’ll rot your teeth’, my mother said. ‘It’s poisonous’, my friend once told me. But Cola has truly redeemed itself as a cleaning product. Remove Driveway Oil Stains Has your driveway become ridden with oil spills over the years? Well here’s a quick and easy fix for you that requires no effort. Pour a bottle of coke on your oil spill and let it soak for a few hours. After you’ve left it for a few hours, take a hosepipe (ideally one that has strong pressure) and rinse the no longer stained area. Rust remover! Are your old golf clubs getting a little rusty? Considering buying new ones? Save yourself pounds and invest in a can of coke instead. Cola is an excellent rust buster because of its citric acid. Soak your old clubs in a container of coke for 24 hours. Remove and rinse with water to wash away any stickiness. Use this technique on anything from golf clubs to pennies. The properties of coke help break down rust particles and make them easier to clean. Stinky Trousers? Gone fishing? If your clothing smells and you fear the lingering odour, worry not. Grab a can of Cola of course and add to the wash with your regular detergent! One can will help break down and neutralize odors, getting rid of the even the worst odor culprits. Grout out Ever spilt Cola on the floor and realized its cleaning potential? Little did you know that cola is great for cleaning tile grout! If you have dirty, dingy grout, pour a bit of cola onto the area, let it sit for a few

Household Cleaning Hacks

minutes, and wipe clean. For tough stains, use a cleaning toothbrush to scrub the grout before wiping the area clean. Cola can also be used on carpet stains. Pour cola onto the area, let it sit for a few minutes then scrub to remove the stain using a scrub brush. Finish by using soapy water to wipe over the area once you’re done. Say goodbye to clothing stains! If you have any clothes with grease, asphalt or creosote stains, you know how difficult they can be to remove. Grease stains are famously difficult to remove from clothing and we all know how expensive stain removers can be. So put your inefficient stain removers aside and join the bandwagon for a cheaper, alternative stain remover. Pour a can of cola into the wash with water and detergent as you usually would and run it through a normal cycle. Once finished, let it dry and enjoy wearing your now stain-free clothes! This method is also quite effective for removing blood and it helps to deodorise smelly clothes. Ready-Steady-Go! We’ve all been there. You’re repeatedly turning your key in the ignition and your car just doesn’t want to start. It could be as a result of your car’s battery connections. If there is excess built-up corrosion, it makes it difficult for your car to start. A quick fix is to pour a can of coke onto your battery connections (when the car is off) to remove cruddy corrosion. It may seem pretty obvious, but a clean connection makes it easier to start the car!

Bread to pick up broken glass Some people suggest using Play-Doh to pick up broken glass, which does work, but you will have to throw it out which seems wasteful. Instead try sweeping up the large pieces and then laying a piece of bread over the leftover glass that you can’t sweep up. Press the bread gently into the glass areas and it will pick up and hold on to them. Throw out the bread immediately when you are done. A potato, cut in half, also works.

Vodka to remove mildew A great way to remove mold and mildew is to buy inexpensive vodka and put some in a spray bottle. Spray it on the problem area, let it sit for 15 minutes, re-wet with the vodka spray and rub with a brush. Mold and mildew will come right off.

Baby oil for streak-free stainless steel Lots of people swear by WD-40 for cleaning their stainless steel and it does work but it is a solvent and flammable, so it’s not a good choice for the kitchen. How about using baby oil which gives stainless appliances great shine. The surface must be clean first and the oil used sparingly, use a damp microfiber cloth to wash the appliances, put on a little baby oil and then buff with a dry cloth. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 41

ABC advice on winter driving As temperatures start to get lower and the nights draw in, it means one thing is certain: winter is only around the corner.

A B C

Avoid driving in snow and other perilous conditions. Never set off when it’s snowing or forecast to, and avoid driving if you possibly can in other bad conditions like fog, heavy rain and ice. Consider alternatives such as walking or using public transport if available. Speak to your employer about working from home when weather is very bad, especially if you live in a rural area prone to snow or floods. Be prepared. Make sure your car is well maintained, and tyres have a tread depth of at least 3mm. Check forecasts and plan your route to avoid roads likely to be more risky and allow plenty of time. Pack a winter driving kit in case you’re caught out. This should include: an ice scraper or de-icer; torch; cloths; a blanket and warm clothes; food and drink; first-aid kit; spade; warning triangle; and a high-visibility vest. Always take a fully charged phone in case of emergencies, but don’t be tempted to use it when driving.

Careful and cautious driving. If you do get caught out driving in hazardous conditions, you need to slow right down to increase the distance from the vehicle in front. In snow or icy conditions stopping distances increase by as much as ten times so you need to drop right back. Keep a careful look out for people on foot and bikes who may be harder to spot.

2017 SEAT Leon FR PROS ‘N’ CONS à Fine-looking à Cost-effective à Performance à Equipment à Stiff Ride

I

’ve just spent seven days behind the wheel of the newest Leon – the three or five-door hatchback from Spanish automaker, SEAT. The contemporary model isn’t ground-breaking in looks – more progressive – and that is no bad thing. After all, why take a scalpel to an already fetching face? The Leon’s cousin is the VW Golf – and that, too, has been fine-tuned of late. The Spaniard is better looking than the German, but then beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. It’s less pricey to purchase, as well. I drove the FR Technology five-door variant, equipped with a 1.4 TSI 150 petrol unit. What’s different? Well, the Leon’s lights and grille have been given a slightly sharper look, but you’d have to really squint to notice. Then the FR model has been given full LED headlights, and its twin tailpipes denote that it has more spirit than the Leon’s below it. The hatchback’s six-speed manual transmission is easy-going and meticulous in finding the correct gears. The steering is nicely responsive, too. Might stems from the 1.4 petrol turbo powerplant – a smart unit that locks off half the cylinders, which helps conserve fuel. The Leon, in FR guise, is not a hot-hatch, but it’s a warm hatchback, with zero to 62mph realisable in 8.0 seconds. Additionally, due to that cylinder shut-off ingenuity, you can squeeze 57.6mpg out of the tank. The Leon FR Technology’s strength is tallied with good handling, and the SEAT adheres to apexes like epoxy resin. This is due to the FR’s 17-inch alloys and dropped suspension. The only disadvantage is the hard ride, which is perceptible on pitted road surfaces. Luckily, well-padded seats help make up for the car’s rigidity, and they’re fantastic at keeping you supported when entering and exiting tight bends.

FAST FACTS (Leon FR Technology 1.4 Eco TSI 150PS – as tested) The SEAT Leon’s cabin is well-judged, with ample room in the front and rear. Natty touches, for example: piano black trim, a touchscreen system and an electric handbrake, make the car’s interior feel chicer than the preceding model’s. The touchscreen tablet-esque media system kicks most of the buttons that used to be in the Leon to the kerb. This tidies the instrument panel up no end. Regrettably, regularly having to hunt for a function on the touchscreen can prove a little disrupting at times. The FR gets surplus kit packed into it as well, comprising: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; sat-nav; rear parking sensors; dual-zone climate control and cruise control. Furthermore, the boot is more than adequate, with a load capacity of 380 litres. It’s not the largest, but it equals the Golf’s – and it trounces the popular Ford Focus’ boot, which only offers 316 litres. So, yes, there is far more to the new SEAT Leon than its looks. It’s unquestionably less conformist than a Volkswagen Golf or a ubiquitous Ford Focus, and you happen

à Max speed: 134 mph à 0-62 mph: 8.0 secs à Combined mpg: 57.6 à Engine layout: 1395cc four-cylinder petrol turbo à Max. power (PS): 150 à CO2: 114 g/km

to get a lot of motor for your money. Also, the 1.4 TSI 150 powerplant offers more ‘oomph’ than lesser petrol-propelled Leons. Plus, it’s quicker and less costly to buy than the 150ps diesel version First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
