Welcome to the September issue This month has been a busy one in the Hammond household as we have welcomed our second child, Nancy. All is going well and we are adapting to being a family of four…the car boot is certainly getting tested to the limit with a dog and two young children, every journey is a challenge of how can we fit everything in! In this issue we are looking at the return to normality of the school routine. We offer advice on how to help your children with their homework, how to deal with going back to school as well as what school clubs there are available locally. September is foodie month, with National Organic Month and British Food Fortnight. Make sure you turn to page 23 for inspiration to liven up your dinner plate. Locally we have so many towns and villages with unique businesses and activities on offer, this month we are looking at what Long Sutton has on offer, next time you’re wondering where to visit think about supporting our local amenities. As much as I hate to think about it winter is just around the corner and that means preparation at home. There are lots of jobs that need to be done before the weather changes, make sure you tick them off from our checklist on page 33. But before the dark nights and weather change all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and what remains of the summer weather!

NEWS Wisbech Grammar School Race at Your Place raises £2900 for Cancer Research UK.
The ethos of social responsibility runs deep at Wisbech Grammar School, and this year the School is thrilled to have raised £2900 for Cancer Research UK. Geoff Howes (Head of Maths) who is a keen runner, and Friends of Wisbech Grammar School organised the event; a tombola stall, BBQ and steel band ensured that runners and spectators were fully entertained. On a gloriously rich sunny evening, runners warmed up in readiness for either 5K or 1K run. Families were there representing loved ones, friends and people they knew affected by cancer. There is one goal in mind, to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research. The kindness and generosity shown by everyone was truly inspiring with many people donating money on top of paying their registration fee to enter the race. Each runner received a medal, bottles of water were kindly donated by Tesco Extra (Wisbech) and the numbers were printed and donated by Healey’s Print Group. Wisbech Grammar would like to thank all our runners and supporters who made this event a success. http://www. wisbechgrammar.com/WGS-Raceat-Your-Place-raises-2900-forCancer-Research-UK?returnUrl=/ Latest-News

Lincolnshire Author Writes About His Experiences Flying the Phantom During the Cold War in Fascinating New Book Boston author David Gledhill joined the RAF as a navigator in 1973. After training, he flew the F4 Phantom on squadrons in the UK and West Germany. He was one of the first aircrew members to fly the F2 and F3 Air Defence Variant of the Tornado on its acceptance into service and served for many years as an instructor on the Operational Conversion Units of both the Phantom and the Tornado. He commanded the Tornado Fighter Flight in the Falkland Islands and has worked extensively with the armed forces of most NATO nations. He has published many books and has used his knowledge of the era and his own personal experiences to write his latest book, Phantom in the

Cold War. This book focuses on predominantly on the aircraft’s role as an air defence fighter, exploring the ways in which it provided the British contribution to the Second Allied Tactical Air Force at RAF Wildenrath, the home of Nos. 19 and 92 Squadrons during the Cold War. As with his previous books, the author, who flew the Phantom operationally, recounts the thrills, challenges and consequences of operating this sometimes temperamental jet at extreme low-level over the West German countryside, preparing for a war which everyone hoped would never happen. Written by an author with first-hand experience of flying this aircraft, this book should have great appeal to any aviation and Cold War enthusiast.

NEWS Dinosaur Event to become a Regular Activity in Spalding
Families flocked to Ayscoughfee Hall to see a pair of Dinosaurs and take part in a whole host of historic activities. The Spalding venue hosted a Festival of Archaeology earlier in the summer wih over 900 people attending in total. The event proved so successful, that organisers are now hoping to make it a regular fixture. The main attraction was the visit of staff from Fossils Galore who brought along real dinosaur bones, some of which were on display to the public for the first time. The fossils were from “Indie” an eight metre long Iguanodon and “Stompy” a woolly rhinoceros skull found in Cambridgeshire in 2014. Jamie Jordan and Sarah Moore, who discovered Indie, spoke to guests about their historic finds.
Jamie said: “It was fantastic to see so many people come along and children really fascinated by the fossils. Indie and Stompy generated a lot of attention but we also had plenty of other activities going on which proved popular.” The event also included a talk by Louise Jennings, Historic Environment Officer for Lincolnshire, focused on the history of South Holland from the ground down through artefacts found in and around Spalding. There was also an All Day Play with everything from soft play for toddlers to replicating a Roman mosaic for older kids and adults. On the Saturday visitors enjoyed a full day of information, education, stalls and talks about the study and practice of archaeology.

Book Folding at Spalding Library A group of children from Spalding Parish C of E Day School enjoyed an afternoon of book folding at Spalding Library. Following a hedgehog pattern, prepared by Sharman Morriss, the children folded a book each to create their own Harry (Potter) Hedgehogs. The children got to take their works of art home and will be training other children to create masterpieces to live in the new school library which will open in September. After folding nearly 200 pages the children were ready for their biscuit and squash. It was a great opportunity to make community links and the Spalding Library Team hosted a fantastic event.

NEWS Walking for Health Celebrates 10th Anniversary A scheme aimed at getting more people in South Holland walking has celebrated its ten year anniversary and organisers are keen to attract new members. The district’s Walking for Health initiative marked the occasion with a celebratory event at the South Holland Centre recently, which was attended by 130 walk leaders and volunteers. The scheme helps to support South Holland District Council’s priority of developing safer, stronger, healthier and more independent communities whilst protecting the most vulnerable. Walking for Health offers thirteen walks across the district run by eight walking groups. The health benefits of walking include: lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes and strokes, improved heart, lungs and circulation performance, improved mood, reduced anxiety and it can help you sleep better. Walking gets people active and can provide a safe place to meet others, which can also help people to manage or recover from any mental health problems. The walks are led by friendly, knowledgeable volunteers who are specially trained for the job. A total of 72 new walkers joined in 201617, bringing total membership to 329 and new participants are always made to feel welcome. But don’t just take our word for it - some of the walkers who attended the celebration have had their say on the many benefits that Walking for Health gives them. A member of the Spalding group said: “I joined eight years ago and volunteered to become a walk leader. I think the main
advantage has been meeting so many lovely people and of course, helping me to keep fit.” A Donington walker said: “We joined because it seemed a great way of meeting new friends and getting to know our local area. My husband and I really look forward to our Tuesday ‘date’ – we always have a great time and laugh a lot.” A member of the Crowland group added: “I joined after retiring because I was looking for things to do. It has brought me so many new friends, with other friendship groups growing out of the original walking one. Not only that but I feel much fitter.” An Ayscoughfee walker added: “I suffered a stroke in 2014 which left me paralysed, but I eventually got mobile again. Walking has developed my leg muscles and my mental health, by meeting people and discussing everyday life. The walk leaders are excellent and you can take it as slowly as you like.” To take part in one or more walks, free of charge each week, just turn up on the day as outlined below: Spalding: Monday 10.45am meet at South Holland Centre (30 and 60 minutes) Donington: Tuesday 10.30am meet at Ruby Hunt Centre (30, 45 and 90 minutes) Crowland: Wednesday 10.45am meet at Crowland library (30 and 60 minutes) Holbeach: Thursday 10.30am meet at Holbeach United Services Club (60 minutes) Sutton St James: Thursday 10am meet at Sutton St James Village Hall (60-90 minutes) Long Sutton: Friday 10.45am meet at Long Sutton library (60 minutes) Spalding (Ayscoughfee): Friday 11am meet at Ayscoughfee Gardens Café (30 minutes)
If you would like more information on the walks, or would be interested in becoming a ‘walk leader’, please contact the South Holland Walk Coordinator at the Castle Sports Complex, Spalding on 01775 762178 or visit http://www.sholland.gov.uk/article/3558/South-Holland-Walks

Nick’s Notes
T
he South East Lincolnshire Local Plan that determines among many things, housing need and where housing should be built, retail and commercial space and detailed planning policies for the next twenty years, was submitted to the planning inspectorate on 23rd June.
Two inspectors will now come to South Holland for two formal oral hearings in October and again in early November. There will then be a consultation on any proposed changes to the plan around December this year / January 2018, with the final report from the Inspector expected in February 2018. A sharp increase in business rates has caused serious concern for many following a national revaluation that came into effect in April. A government scheme for business rate relief, administered by the District Council will now mean that businesses with a rateable value of less than or equal to £100,000 will be limited to an increase in their bill for 2017/18 of £600. The scheme will only run for three years after which business will have to pay the full bill. The District is being compensated through grant funding but this is front loaded so that 50% of the money has to be used in the first year with a sharp decrease in years two and three. As roadworks continue ahead of schedule at Holbeach for the provision of a new roundabout at Peppermint Junction and a smaller one to off the A151 to access the Food Enterprise Zone (FEZ), South Holland has received notification that they have been successful in a bid for funding, as part of the Government’s Growth Deal to go towards
the infrastructure required for the first phase of the FEZ. A programme and project plan is expected by September. Exciting times! A expression of interest bid for a Heritage Action Zone for Holbeach has now been submitted to Historic England with the overall aim,” to create a thriving service centre for residents and visitors, with a vibrant historic core which stimulates economic vitality and serves an integrated and growing community.” The focus will be the heart of the town and its conservation area, particularly the High Street. If successful in this initial expression of interest, then a more detailed application will be submitted towards the end of the year, with the project potentially starting in April 2018. The Grants 4 Growth scheme is now well underway. There is a total grant pot of £1.3m for Lincolnshire businesses looking to grow and create jobs. The scheme can pay up to 28% of the overall eligible costs for items like machinery and equipment. So if you employ less than 250 employees and have a turnover of less than £44m a year you can apply. Visit the website grants4growth.sholland.gov.uk. So far we have received 74 expressions of interest, 27 actual applications of which 25 have been approved and 8 have already received their grant funding.

Advice
Identify
Human Trafficking Human trafficking doesn’t just happen in the sex industry. People are exploited in construction, farming and even working in other people’s homes. Usually people who have been trafficked are: • lied to about what a job involves • brought from another country (but people can also be trafficked within the UK) • forced to work • monitored very closely by whoever they work for Because people are trafficked to work for very little pay, or none at all, it’s sometimes called ‘modern day slavery’ or labour ‘exploitation’. Signs of human trafficking All trafficking cases are different, but there are common signs. A victim of trafficking might: • have a lack of freedom • work for very little or no pay • seem to be in debt to someone • live in fear of someone, or even the authorities • have signs of physical abuse, like cuts and bruises • move location regularly Children can be trafficked too. They will share many common signs with adult victims, but may stand out from other children because: • they have money or possessions that they can’t account for • they don’t seem to live with parents or guardians • they’re emotionally unstable, eg aggressive, withdrawn or anxious If you want confidential advice about trafficking before calling the police, there are a number of specialist organisations you can talk to. You can contact: • The Salvation Army’s 24 hour confidential helpline for reporting modern slavery on 0300 3038 151
• The Modern Day Slavery Foundation’s helpline on 0800 0121 700, open 24 hours a day • the NSPCC’s helpline on 0808 8005 000 if you think a child is in danger of trafficking Human trafficking is the trade of people for exploitation and commercial gain. If you think someone has been trafficked, you can help make them safe. If you suspect human trafficking, call the police. Call 999 if it’s an emergency, or 101 if it’s not urgent. If you’d prefer to stay anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. If you don’t want to call the police, you can talk to a charity anonymously. If you want to talk to someone face-toface, Citizens Advice can help you decide what to do next. What happens after you report trafficking The first thing the police will do is protect someone who has been trafficked from anyone that might harm them. The police and specialist organisations will work together to provide the victim with practical and emotional support. They’ll get medical care and help arranging accommodation in safe place, away from their traffickers. If it’s safe, they’ll be helped to return to their home country. If it’s not safe to return, perhaps because they might be trafficked again, they can apply for asylum in the UK. How to tell if you’ve been trafficked While every case of trafficking is different, there are signs you can look out for if something doesn’t feel right about your situation. Promise of a better life You can be trafficked by someone you’ve met in person or online. They might have:
• brought you to work from another country, though you can be trafficked within the UK • promised you a good job or a relationship Being forced to work You might have been trafficked if you’ve been: • forced to work very long hours • paid very little, or nothing at all • forced to have sex with people Having your freedom taken away Your traffickers might have stopped you leaving by: • taking away your passport • claiming you owe them money, perhaps for travel or accommodation • accompanying you wherever you go • threatening to hurt you After you call the police The police will take you somewhere safe, away from your trafficker. If you’re a victim of trafficking you’ll have at least 6 weeks to recover without needing to arrange a visa to stay in the UK. During this time you’ll get help finding somewhere to live. You’ll also get emotional support such as counselling if you need it. You won’t have to pay for any of this help. The police will investigate the people who trafficked you. Library news Adult Book Choice Between You and Me - By Lisa Hall ‘They say every marriage has its secrets, but no one sees what happens behind closed doors. Sal and Charlie are married with a young daughter called Maggie. Sal stays at home and looks after Maggie while Charlie is a high flying lawyer looking for promotion.’ To say Charlie is controlling is putting it mildly and there were lots of aspects of this book that made for
very uncomfortable reading. Lisa Hall’s description of the bullying that goes on in this marriage is disturbing and thought provoking. This is a difficult review to write without giving too much away. You need to read this book without any preconceived ideas, so keep away from too many reviews. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that are very hard to put down, this is the one for you.

Back to school TIPS
M
ake your child’s transition from holiday mode to learning mode a breeze with this guide. Summer’s over. Now it’s time for you to go back to school. No one likes being dragged back to class after a summer full of fun in the sun but it’s important to be prepared for the new school term as it fast approaches. This will let you and your children start the year right and transition smoothly to studying again. Get better prepared with some back to school tips. Tips for parents with younger children heading back to school There are special considerations you need to look into if you are a parent of a young child. They need more support and encouragement at this point in their lives compared to older children. Here are some tips you can follow: • Schedule any doctor/dentist checkups – schedule a medical and dental checkup before classes start. It will eliminate hassles and sick days that can potentially leave your child behind in class. • Guard against separation anxiety – some children experience separation anxiety more than others. If you have been with your child
throughout the summer, it is normal that they might get upset about being left at school. So, if possible, try to introduce your child to the new teacher before the first day of school or at least be talking about it a week to ten days before the term begins. • Arrange a playdate with their classmates – playdates are a great way for young children to develop social skills. Arranging a playdate with some of your child’s schoolmates before school starts will ease your child’s anxiety about first day jitters. • Encourage extracurricular activities – becoming a well-rounded person takes more than just completing homework. Make it a point to encourage your child to take part in extracurricular activities. • Engage them in sports – keep your child healthy body and mind by letting them try out different sports. Football, rugby and hockey are all played in teams which encourage sportsmanship while allowing children to remain physically active at the same time. Tips for going back to school • Buy school supplies early – shops are usually packed at the start of the school year.
Family Life Avoid the rush by buying all the necessary school supplies early. Use a checklist to make sure that you’ve got everything covered. • Reestablish routines – during the summer break, you most likely have no strict mealtime and bedtime routines. It can take a week before you get used to the school routine so start waking up early before term time. • Buy clothing essentials – be sure to buy uniforms and shoes early, This lets you avoid panic on the day before school and the crazy queues too! • Set the alarm clock – the last thing you want is to be late on the first day of school. So remember to set the alarm clock. • Create a weekly meal plan – start being conscious of your families health by creating a meal plan. This enables you to have a balanced diet throughout the year. Being prepared for school before the term starts will have a significant impact on your child’s confidence, attitude and performance. Remember that going to school can be fun but stress is almost unavoidable no matter which level you’re in.
Homework, Is it All a Big Stress? With all the pressure of school work, puberty, social life and other commitments playing their part, it’s understandable that your child might sometimes feel a little overwhelmed by their homework. There are many ways to help ease some of this by supporting and guiding them - they might not tell you they want help, but by showing your support your child will pick up on your positive attitude and this can help encourage them to do the same when it comes to their education. The benefits of helping your child are endless. First and foremost you will find that you end up spending more quality time with them by listening and talking, and you will also be able to gauge a sense of what their strengths and weaknesses are. How much homework should my child be getting? The government has set the following guidelines for secondary school children: • Years 7 and 8: 45 to 90 minutes per day • Year 9: 1 to 2 hours per day • Years 10 and 11: 1.5 to 2.5 hours per day Top tips for secondary school homework • Keep a designated homework area at home. Somewhere preferably where you have a flat surface, paper and pens readily available. Make sure any distractions are avoided e.g. turn off the television, no phones or ipads. • Help keep a routine for your child when it comes to homework. You might find your child wants to complete their homework as soon as they come home from school or they might want to relax and then start working later in the evening. Let your child decide when they want to do their
14 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
homework but try and keep a regular time. • Praise and encourage your child to help boost their confidence. Try to pick up on how they have completed certain tasks for example, “I like the way you worked that out…” as opposed to “Well done”. • Ask your child to give you a bit of background on the homework and why they have been set the piece. This should open up discussion and help their enthusiasm. • However tempting it may be, refrain from completing your child’s homework for them. Homework is set to help teachers understand how much your child has understood about the subject and what they can complete independently. • Stay calm. It might become frustrating if you are trying to teach your child something and they do not seem to be grasping the concept but remember losing your patience will knock their self-esteem and could also prevent them coming to you for help in the future. • Allow yourself enough time to help your child with their homework. Constantly looking at the clock could discourage them and rushing to complete work against the clock will not result in your child’s best piece of work.
• Use the library. Staff at your local library will be able to help your child find the info he/she needs and develop their research skills. Many libraries offer free internet access for homework, and can advise on links to useful homework websites. • Many schools offer after-school homework clubs. These are a great way of getting the homework out of the way and getting help and advice on the best way to tackle it. • Encourage your child by offering a small reward that they can choose at the end of the week if all their set homework is done. It doesn’t have to be money or sweets - maybe a favourite movie, or offering to play a game or do something with them that they always enjoy. Aim if possible for them to have at least one homework-free day a week. • The amount of homework gradually increases as your child goes through primary school - but still the amount of homework set in high school (Year 7 onwards) can come as a shock. Help your child adapt by helping them plan their homework for the first few weeks using a homework diary (supplied by most schools). • Don’t get stressed out by homework - if you are, your child will be too. Remember to talk to the school if you feel your child has too much homework, or it’s not clear, or is taking them too long. Asking for feedback on how they feel your child is doing is also helpful.

Children and Hobbies
The benefits of engaging in a hobby and how to encourage your child to take up a hobby. As adults we know if we spend time on an activity at which you are highly capable and interested in, then you are likely to be a lot happier and healthier than those people who don’t. The same can be said for children.
How to figure out what hobby your child may be interested in: If your child has not yet developed a hobby, try to help him or her figure out what they are interested in by observing them. Ask questions about their likes and dislikes. Introduce a wide
Family Life variety of activities and look for the activity they are highly capable and show an interest in. Once decided on a particular hobby ensure you show your support by getting involved with them.
Here are some further benefits for children who engage in hobbies: • Children learn to entertain themselves as hobbies keep them focused and busy. • Boosts self esteem to be involved with an activity that makes a child feel competent. • Children learn goal setting and decision making. • Hobbies can teach self discipline, patience and practise. • More time spent on a hobby means less time spent on digital media. It makes it easier for parents to limit digital media time when their child has a hobby. • Hobbies can have an educational value and kids develop a hunger for knowledge (to know more about the hobby) without realising it. • Hobbies can lead to lifetime career choices or lifetime passions • Children with hobbies are more interesting to other children and this improves their interpersonal skills and general personality development. They are also likely to make more friends especially if they join a club where the other children are interested in the same activity or hobby. • Hobbies can bring parents and children together and strengthen family bonds. • Working on a hobby gives a child “down time”, helps with stress relief, and generally makes a child feel good. • Children involved with hobbies are less likely to become involved in destructive or unhealthy activities as teenagers, such as turning to alcohol and drugs for entertainment value.
16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
Hobbies can include: Colouring and painting, dancing, astronomy, building models, playing an instrument, participating in a sport, reading books, stamp, coin or currency note collecting, rock collecting, photography, gardening, lego building, trading cards, horse riding, drama, swimming, football, gymnastics, rugby, scrapbooking, balloon twisting, sailing, hockey, computing, needlecrafts, mosaics, pottery and lots more. There are so many groups, clubs and classes locally where children can try different activities and see what they enjoy. It can also help with childcare when organised through the school as many run immediately after school on the premises, so you know your child is doing something they enjoy at the same time as allowing you to stay longer at work! Banish the Holiday Weight Gain
W
e have all done it, booked a 2 week all inclusive holiday and for the first day we eat the salad and fruit but by day three the cakes have lured us in as well as those yummy cocktails after lying by the pool all day. Before you know it you’re back home and it’s like cramming sardines in a can to get your favourite jeans on. So, what can you do to reverse the gain?
Avoid Empty Calories And Simple Carbs
Flush Away Bloat
Keep Your Drinks “Clean”
A lot of the weight gain that we put on throughout the holiday season - some of it’s bloat because it takes a lot of calories to put on fat - so if we stay hydrated, we can easily flush some of the extra sodium and bloat from our body. Additionally, if we drink a lot of water, we don’t get those false hunger cues, and water is very important for our metabolism, which is important for weight loss. Drinking 500ml of water increases your metabolic rate by 30 percent. Don’t go overboard though as too much water can be dangerous!
Cutting alcohol is a really easy way to cut calories, and if you’re not ready to cut alcohol, then at least cut the mixers. Try and keep it clean.
Think Fresh It’s as simple as this: Every time you eat a meal, incorporate something fresh too. Start your day with veggies with your eggs or have a salad at lunch and at least one vegetable at dinner. It’s important to have veggies throughout the day - they’re really high in fibre, which will help keep you full, and they’re really low in calories. I always say to fill half your plate with vegetables.
When choosing post-holiday foods, stay away from items that have low nutritional value like simple carbs and empty calories. These types of foods include cookies, cakes, bagels, baked goods, breakfast cereal, syrups, and soda. Instead focus on complex carbs and “brown foods” like whole wheat, farro, quinoa, and brown rice.
Think Before Going Gluten-Free Do you have celiac disease? Then yes, a gluten-free diet is important. However, if you’re just looking to lose weight, gluten-free isn’t necessarily going to help you. In fact, it could hinder your weight-loss goals. Gluten-free is great if you don’t know how to cut out the carbs that are in your life, but the tricky thing about that is there are a lot of gluten-free substitutes that are full of rubbish. Gluten-free items are usually made with potatoes, rice; more white, simple carbs a lot of the time, and a lot of fillers. So if you want to go gluten-free, and cut out grains for a quick jump start to your diet, then that’s a different story than just saying you’re gluten-free. Because today you can get a gluten-free muffin or bagel, so it’s not always calorically beneficial to go
gluten-free. It’s also usually void of nutrients because it’s still processed food. So if you want to go gluten-free, stick to quinoa and brown rice and beans and root vegetables. But the substitutes are where people go wrong.
Don’t Forget Strength Training Many people, women in particular, neglect resistance exercise. Women tend to stick to aerobic machines or group exercise classes. Weight training is crucial for women in order to prevent muscle and bone loss that occurs with age. More muscle mass also helps women to better manage their weight, maintain joint flexibility, and improve endurance.
Unplug Constantly checking email and refreshing our news feeds on a nonstop basis is technology overload. We are now tuned into our electronics 24/7, and it’s making us more stressed than ever. More and more research is linking this overload to increased risk for depression, burnout, and social anxiety. Aim to spend at least an hour or two during the day without your mobile phone, iPad or computer.” Being sedentary on our phones or laptops is also a recipe for weight gain and heart disease.
Migraine Awareness Week - Sunday 3rd September 2017 - Saturday 9th September 2017 Migraine Awareness Week is marked each year to highlight the facts about migraine and reduce stigma. The week begins on the first Sunday in September. Migraine affects 1 in 7 people, that’s over eight million people in the United Kingdom alone, making it more prevalent than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. The World Health Organisation recognises migraine as one of the most disabling lifetime conditions yet awareness and understanding is low. Migraine is a complex neurological disorder with no known cause or cure. Unfortunately many people will suffer from migraine for years throughout their life negatively impacting upon their work, family and social lives. It is not really known what causes
20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
migraine, there is no diagnostic test or cure. However, we do know it starts deep in the brain with misfiring of neurotransmitters which set in place a chain reaction. This results in many symptoms which affect hearing, eyesight and ability to smell, and usually ends with a throbbing one-sided headache. Exactly what triggers a migraine is very individual to each person. For most people it is rarely just one trigger but a combination of factors which individually can be tolerated but when several occur together or accumulate, a threshold is passed and an attack is triggered. For more information and advice on migraine treatments and prevention visit www.migraine.org.uk www.migrainetrust.org

British Food Fortnight
September 23 – October 8 2017
Organic September
H
eld in the autumn at the same time as harvest festival, British Food Fortnight is the biggest annual, national celebration of British food and drink. It was established in the wake of the Foot and Mouth crisis, in response to the fact that, though there are numerous food initiatives, projects and events taking place across Britain, there was no overall flagship event to bring them to the public’s attention. Since its beginnings in 2002, British Food Fortnight has become THE opportunity for those who work in any aspect of food and drink, to come together and promote the benefits of buying and
eating from our home produced British larder. In setting a particular date range, it concentrate efforts across sectors. Every year businesses and organisations across the UK take part, all enjoying the commercial benefits that participation brings. The event is the biggest showcase of food on the national calendar with celebrations including promotions, tastings and special menus in pubs, restaurants and shops, special events in care homes for the elderly, scrumptious servings of British food in garden centre cafes, patriotic menus in hospitals, family feasts in children’s centres and lots of fun food and drink festivals and country fairs. To find out what is happening locally visit www.lovebritishfood.co.uk
This year the Soil Association needs you to join their “Organic your September” campaign. And again this year we have a whole month to celebrate all things organic. The message is to promote organic and encourage shoppers to discover their own favourite organic products – and there are lots to choose from. So, swap your usual supermarket foods for organic products. Be kinder to yourself, your wildlife, and create an overall healthier planet. So … how can you take part in Organic September? Well, there are lots of ways! Why not make a pact to replace just one of your everyday products each month with an organic one instead. You could replace food items, beauty products, clothing or household goods and before you know it you could be completely organic! The Soil Association has lots of helpful ideas about how you can shop for less and if you join The Soil Association you can get access to exclusive offers via Organic Connect a directory of independent retailers and suppliers. You could even have an organic box, filled with fresh fruit and veg, delivered straight to your door. Have you ever thought about having an organic holiday. By visiting The Soil Association website you can find a beautiful place to stay for a fabulous holiday – you could choose from a working organic farms, where you could find out more about organic farming, an organic campsite, yurt or cottage – something for everyone! For more information about activities and how you can get involved, go to Organic September at www. soilassociation.org for the details. Also the Fairtrade Foundation’s website at www.fairtrade.org.uk is full of useful information on why it’s so important to be eco-friendly. Go on, give it a go!

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Wisbech Grammar School
O
ur Whole School Open Day 30 September 10:00 – 12:30 (for pupils age 4 - 16), and 6th Form Open Evening 17 October (18:00 – 20:00) gives parents and children the opportunity to discover who we are and what makes us so different from other schools. AT WGS, academic excellence is at the heart of our educational approach with a high level of pastoral care and well-being. We believe that educational development is not simply confined to the classroom or laboratory, but found in the art rooms, drama and dance studios, sports fields and music rooms. We go beyond the narrow boundaries of exam specifications, giving an all-round education that inspires. Our timetable reflects this and includes period 5 which is devoted to pupils exploring their interests and finding their passion. The School has fantastically talented teaching staff who develop a strong rapport with pupils, better enabling them to negotiate their own individual learning pathway. By stretching and challenging pupils, we help to build mental resilience, strength of character and leadership skills. Upon entering 6th Form, many pupils take on additional responsibilities such as coach others and leading clubs or activities.
Art, Textiles, Astronomy, Dance, Music, Performing Arts, Debating and Public Speaking, Archery, Animation, Languages; are just some of the co-curricular activities our pupils can explore. Of course the opportunities to engage in Sport activities abound, with Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Athletics, Netball, Archery and Badminton to name but a few. Many of our pupils compete in first teams and at both regional and national level competitions; as well as take part in regular inter-school events. Our new Performing Arts Studio and partnership with Studio 19, a progressive and vibrant dance company, has enabled us to provide a range of dance opportunities as part of our wider offering. For entry September 2018 our Entrance Assessment date is on 7 October 09:30 – 11:30 for years 7 (1st From) and 9 (3rd Form). Please note: you need to register by the 5 October to sit the Entrance Assessment on the 7 October. However, further opportunities are available upon request. Scholarship and Bursary Programme entry for years 7, 9 and 12 (1st Form, 3rd Form and 6th Form) Our Scholarship and Bursary programmes enable children who excel, either academically
or across a breadth of areas including Drama, Art, Music, or Sport to experience all that our School has to offer and to fulfil their full potential. Applications for Scholarship deadline is 24 November 2017. Contact the Admissions Team to request a Scholarship Pack or find out more about our upcoming Open Days. We also encourage you to visit the School when we are in session to experience all that is inspiring about Wisbech Grammar.

Focus on Long Sutton
Long Sutton -
South Holland’s Gem Next time when you fancy going somewhere different to do your shopping, a day out or you just fancy a cuppa and a cake, why not visit Long Sutton?
W
ith a wealth of independent shops in the market place, a bustling Friday market and several well regarded eateries, Long Sutton has something for everyone. Local councillor Andrew Tennant commented; “I consider myself very lucky to have been born and bred in Long Sutton and still living here , without sounding too much like Goldilocks the town is simply not too big or too small but ‘just right’. I am certainly proud to represent the town and surrounding area on South Holland and always try to make sure that our area has a ‘voice’ on the Council. The town benefits from a traditional market place where you can conveniently park right outside your shops and to be honest there is very little that you have trouble finding in the town all with good old fashioned levels of help and service. For its size, the town also benefits from a quality choice of pubs with frequent live music and choices to eat out. I always enjoy a walk around the town on Friday Market day in particular. Recently it has been difficult to miss the efforts of Long Sutton in Bloom , this year’s displays have been much admired with plenty of photos on social media.”
Long Sutton Market House Long Sutton Market House is an exciting volunteer run multi use centre enabling the people of Long Sutton and surrounding area to access many services locally. The Long Sutton Market House and Corn Exchange were built in 1856 to serve the increasing demands of commerce and agriculture and very quickly became a focal point within the community. The fully restored Market House was formally re-opened in Spring 2005 as a multiuse centre for use by the community of Long Sutton and surrounding areas. The Market House is an elegant combination of traditional and modern boasting the latest technology, disabled access 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
to all floors, providing the perfect venue to hire for a range of community, training or commercial/social events. The Market House is managed and staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers and fundraisers all committed to making the Market House a much used and needed community resource.

Get Your Home Ready for Winter
W
ith summer soon to be a fading memory, now’s the time to ready your home for autumn and winter’s cooler temps and unpredictable weather conditions. Larger Projects Are you thinking of switching from wood or upgrading your windows? Energy efficient glazing helps reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills, whether with double or triple glazing, secondary glazing, or just heavier curtains. What are the benefits of energy efficient windows? More comfortable home: energy efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer draughts and cold spots. • Peace and quiet: as well as keeping the heat in, energy efficient windows insulate your home against external noise. • Reduced condensation: energy efficient glazing reduces condensation build up on the inside of windows. How does energy efficient glazing work? Double glazed windows have two sheets of glass with a gap in between, usually about 16mm, to create an insulating barrier that keeps heat in. This is sometimes filled with gas. Triple glazed windows have three sheets of glass, but aren’t always better than double glazed windows. What are windows made from? Energy efficient windows come in a range of frame materials and styles. Performance criteria vary according to how well they stop heat from passing through, how much sunlight travels through the glass and how little air can leak in or out around the window. Glass The most energy efficient type for double glazing is low emissivity (Low-E) glass. This often has an invisible coating of metal oxide, normally on one of the internal panes. This lets in light and heat but cuts the amount of heat that can get out. Gaps between the glass Very efficient windows might use gases such as argon, xenon or krypton in the gap between the sheets of glass. Pane spacers These are set around the inside edges to keep the two panes of glass apart. For maximum efficiency, look for pane spacers containing little or no metal – often known as ‘warm edge’ spacers. Frame materials For all frame materials there are windows
Clear out the gutters. Remove leaves and other debris from your drainpipe and gutters to prevent clogging. Tree trimming You know who’s to blame for your guttering getting clogged up with leaves? It’s those trees, making a mess of your house and getting away with it. Take a stand against them and get them trimmed away from the house. This will reduce the amount of foliage that will drop into the guttering, and will also reduce the build-up of snow on the tree that could cause damage from broken branches. Clean the fireplace and chimney. You can clear out ash and charred wood from the fireplace yourself, but leave the chimney cleaning to a professional. It is essential you have your chimney swept by a professional at least once a year.
Check the heating system. Do a survey of your home’s heating vents to make sure they’re not blocked or covered by furniture, carpeting, or curtains. Dust vents and clean all filters. Make an appointment for an annual heating system check-up. Check for drafts. Stay warm, save energy, and reduce your heating bills by examining windows and doors for cracks and sealing them to prevent drafts. Install a door sweep Use a door sweep to stop drafts from entering your home under an exterior door. Insulate the hot water heater Save on fuel by wrapping older water heaters in a jacket of insulation, an easy DIY project that even a beginner can do. Insulation
available in all energy ratings. • uPVC frames last a long time and may be recycled. • Wooden frames can have a lower environmental impact, but require maintenance. They are often used in conservation areas where the original windows had timber frames. • Aluminium or steel frames are slim and long-lasting, and may be recycled. • Composite frames have an inner timber frame covered with aluminium or plastic. This reduces the need for maintenance and keeps the frame weather-proof. • Doors and conservatories • Energy efficient doors • Like any other part of the home, doors can be insulated and draught-proofed to prevent heat from escaping. Building regulations state that installing a new door requires approval from the relevant buildings control body, and new external doors now generally contain integrated insulation to reduce heat loss and comply with the regulations. • A properly fitted new external door should include an effective draught-proofing system. Existing doors can be improved by fitting
About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used. Bleed the radiators If your radiators are colder at the top than they are at the bottom, then your radiators have trapped air inside them that’s stopping the heat from circulating properly. It’s time to grab a towel and your special key and bleed that radiator! Bleeding the radiators releases the air, allowing the radiator to run more efficiently. Inspect the Roof Grab your ladders and check for any loose tiles, you don’t want to be out there wobbling on a windy day if you have any that need some tlc.
draught-proofing strips around the seals and the letterbox. Fitting draught-proofing to the doors and windows will save the typical household around £25 a year. • Conservatories • Even the best quality glazing loses heat more quickly than an uninsulated cavity wall. This means that conservatories are not thermally efficient and should not be heated. Provided they are never heated, and the doors between the conservatory and the heated house are kept shut in cold weather, they can actually reduce heat loss by acting as an extra insulating layer outside your house. You can make the most of this by installing a sealed sliding door, and sealed blinds or heavy, lined curtains to separate the conservatory more effectively from the rest of your house. • If you heat your conservatory, any benefit you may have had will soon disappear along with the heat that escapes into the outside air. Double glazing, blinds and shutters can all reduce the amount of heat wasted, but it is not possible to bring a conservatory up to the thermal standard of even an averagely insulated room. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 33

Underfloor Heating Underfloor Heating Underfloor heating is a great way to keep your home warm. It’s lovely to walk on, it distributes heat evenly around each corner of the room, and it frees your walls from radiators, making more space for paintings, shelf units or even picture windows. However, it can also be very expensive to install, particularly in older houses, so you may need to think long and hard before making a decision. What are the good things about underfloor heating systems? • Comfort! Your feet will be lovely and warm, so you can walk around barefoot all year - it’s particularly welcoming in the bathroom when you step out of the bath or shower • It distributes heat evenly and consistently around each room • A suitably sized unit can heat a larger area
than an individual radiator, and works at a lower temperature, so it could reduce your heating bills • Less wastage – your floors will stay warm even if the windows are open or the room is very draughty • It’s hidden – so it doesn’t spoil your décor or take up space with ugly, bulky radiators • It can be installed below stone, tile, wood or carpeted floors (as long as the carpet isn’t too thick - a 1.5 tog is generally considered the maximum suitable thickness) • It might enhance your home’s selling price: underfloor heating has a reputation for being state of the art and high spec and could attract buyers looking for a luxurious property So what’s not so good about it? • The main problem is the cost of underfloor heating: it can be expensive and difficult to install – so even if your bills are lower, you’re unlikely to recoup your initial outlay. In older buildings creating the right conditions under the floor can take time and cause major upheaval • It can take a long time to warm up, so it’s vital to use a timer to make sure rooms are warm enough when you want to use them • You can’t use it under some items of furniture or fittings, which might restrict the way you arrange your furniture; in fact, if you
Separating an Open Living and Dining Space Combined living-dining rooms first became popular in the first half of the 20th century – open-plan design layouts replaced the stuffy and formal mazes of reception rooms found in traditional Victorian houses. So while they are a fairly contemporary idea, they can also feel like a bit of a dated concept already: modern 21st century living, particularly in small-yet-stylish flats, often sees the kitchen incorporated into the living area without the need for a dining table, with a raised kitchen island and sofas around a coffee table providing an open, social space for cooking and eating. While the kitchen may be the heart of any home, a big openplan living-dining room can be the warm social centre: perfect for eating, relaxing, entertaining, and working, with space for the whole family and plenty of friends. However, both halves are still separate spaces, and it can unfortunately be all too easy to let them blend into one and lose their definition just because they happen to be in the same room. There are plenty of ways to decorate a living-dining room so it feels a little more like two distinct places, with a space for mealtimes and a space for relaxing, or a more secluded spot to work at the table while the kids watch TV and the most clear divide is the flooring you choose.
Flawless flooring If there’s one thing that really ties a room together, it’s the floor-coverings – be they rugs, carpets, laminates or tiles. If a living-dining room has consistent flooring throughout, you
34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
want to install underfloor heating throughout your home, you might have to get rid of some large, heavy items altogether • If you use a smaller system, you may find you have a lovely warm floor but the rest of the room is still chilly, so you need radiators anyway Can I install it myself? Before you invest in any underfloor heating equipment you should consult a specialist to help you decide which system is right for your home. They will also explain the difficulties and costs involved if you want to install it yourself. It’s possible to carry out electric underfloor heating installation yourself if you’re confident with DIY techniques. However, if you choose a water-based system you will need a qualified professional to lay the pipes and connect them to your boiler. They will also need to lay insulation and screed. Whichever system you choose, it should be linked to the electricity supply by a qualified electrician, who will also need to connect a sensor that works the thermostat.
might struggle to make them feel like different spaces. A great way to provide some contrast is to start with a base of a warm laminate floor style, and then use rugs to separate the two different areas. Arrange sofas and chairs around a large square rug in the living area, and use a similar styled rectangular rug – with a noticeably different pattern – under the dining table. If you don’t want to lose the soft carpets in your cosy living space, then consider separating the dining area with laminate flooring or tiles. The two different flooring styles side by side will create a noticeable contrast, with the added bonus that food spillages during dinner can be easily cleaned up.

VW Passat GTE PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠
Attractive Practical Comfortable Cost Effective Steering Feedback
4 4 4 4 8
FAST FACTS
T
he GTE badge was first ushered in with the VW Golf and it eventually made its way to the more conservative Passat. Bolting a plug-in petrol-electric propulsion unit to a model that is best known for its diesel pulling power was perhaps a brave move for Volkswagen. But it seems to have paid off with the Passat. Like the Golf, the VW Passat GTE’s looks are characterised by C-shaped LED lights accommodated in its bumper, and the blue bar that stretches across the headlights and grille. It’s a restrained fine-tuning of the Passat’s tailoring, although, given the intense hue of blue, the use of which even expands to the car’s brake callipers, the GTE model is simple enough to distinguish from diesel Passats. The battery capacity and output have been given a bit of a boost, but the petrolelectric set-up is fundamentally the same as in the VW Golf GTE’s. The 156PS 1.4 TSI petrol unit and 115PS electric motor combine to make 218PS, giving a 0-62mph sprint of 7.4 seconds. Top speed is 140mph, but unless you’re on a German autobahn, you’re unlikely to risk finding out what that feels like. Step into the cabin and the Passat GTE houses a few understated touches, such as blue piping, blue stitching, aluminium trim and GTE emblems. Other than that, the switchgear and seats are the same as in any other Passat. And, as with all Passat saloons, space is generous. Even with the car’s lithium ion drive battery beneath the rear seats, the VW has good room and a boot that is big 36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
enough for a family’s needs. The Volkswagen’s electric charging time is easy to cope with. Plugging the car’s seven-pin charge cable into a 16A wall socket, I got the 9.9kWh battery from a quarter charged to 100 per cent in under two hours. The GTE runs well on electriconly juice, with a possible range of 31 miles on zero emissions. In Hybrid form the VW saloon responds admirably, even when the petrol engine has closed, which it’ll do at moderate motorway speeds. The power unit restarts effortlessly when it needs to, while the car’s cruise control allows it to store its own impetus and cruise economically. The Passat GTE’s handling is as good as its performance. You can thrust the

Price: £37,025 saloon through bends and its tyres will dig into the tarmac strongly. There’s very little body roll, and the steering, while not delivering that much feedback, is precise. Here’s the important bit, though. VW claims the Passat GTE will do 156.9mpg on the combined cycle. But, as with all cars, this model’s economy will depend on what your driving is like. On a 60-mile run, beginning with a fully charged battery and driving on a mix of roads, I achieved 80.1mpg. Volkswagen’s Passat GTE is, without doubt, a talented car and an attractive vehicle in a wider sense than a conventional high-performing, fully loaded volume-marque. By blending large car pragmatism with a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system, VW has produced one of the greatest reasons yet to think about swapping from a standard oil-burning business saloon to an electrically powered one.
