Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.
Hello! There are a lot of articles discussing all things “new” this issue. There are features about Christenings and Naming Ceremonies, new car registrations and the new season, (dare I say it) Autumn, and the variety of food it brings. Away from the pages we are also about to wish Hayley well as she enters a new phase of her life by becoming a married woman! As this issue is being delivered the summer holidays are coming to an end and for those with children things are about to return to some sort of normality! If you are starting school for the first time or moving to secondary or college then good luck, you have exciting times ahead of you. Enjoy the issue.

National award for Betty West Pinchbeck resident Mrs Betty Matthews has received the special award for 2014, Longest Serving Charity Shop Volunteer, at the national Charity Retail Awards. This award ceremony is the jewel in the crown of the Charity Retail Association’s annual conference and award dinner, a twoday event hosted at Keele University that also heard from a wide range of speakers from the wider retail sector, politicians, charity leaders and volunteers. The awards, which were announced to an audience of over 500 people, were contested by a nationwide range of charities, suppliers and volunteers. The highlight of the award ceremony, Betty’s special award recognised her continuous service at the Oxfam shop in Spalding since 1962. Betty helped establish the shop after reading Oxfam publicity about the plight of children in the developing world. Betty has taken on numerous roles for Oxfam, with campaigning and fundraising being her main interests. Betty’s more recent challenge has been to keep the Spalding shop open, which she did by rallying support from the media, volunteers, donors and customers, to improve sales. Betty,
who recently received the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list, has also managed to raise three sons, ten grandchildren and a great-grandson. Betty said “It is a true honour to receive this award, the years have flown by. I still feel shocked when I think how people told me that Oxfam in Spalding would phase out after a few months when it was first set up in 1962.But I ignored that advice and so many people have said to me over the years ‘Are you still working for Oxfam?’”
Local Grandfather publishes for Grandson When dyslexia put David Turp’s grandson off reading he decided to publish an adventure story in the same genre of TV detective stories that he really enjoys, to incite in him a lasting love of reading and writing. The whole purpose of his book is to encourage young people like Luke, aged 14, to make the effort. The book’s interior design has double spaced text, enlarged font, bite-size chapters and dramatic drawings that positively encourage page turning. David says: “I want to hearten parents of such children, with my grandson, Luke’s personal experience because, sadly, the temptation for parents is to give way to all the commercial electronic gadgetry that is overwhelming in these times. It would surely be a shame if a generation of our children were to gradually lose interest in reading and writing. The best news is that Luke has now read my book coverto-cover, and he enjoyed it so much he has been inspired to send me his first short story attempt by email. I’m delighted. That is all I set out to achieve.” The book is titled Deep Secrets and is available at Bookmark in Spalding or from Amazon (ISBN: 9781484190630) 4 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
The announcement of the award also offered recognition of the generous support long extended by the people of South Holland to Oxfam’s global mission of fighting poverty and suffering. Alongside the awards ceremony, the main conference sessions focused on the idea of innovation across the sector, looking at the best practice of technology, new ways of working in partnership with the local business community and how best to develop volunteers.

A Spectacular Sports Presentation Evening with Beth Tweddle Bourne Grammar School welcomed Olympic Medallist Beth Tweddle as guest of honour at its annual Sports Presentation Evening on Tuesday 8th July. The School, which earlier this year was named by School Sport Magazine as one of the top 30 State Schools for Sport in 2013, has a developed a truly broad and inclusive programme of PE and Sports accessible to all students. The achievements of hundreds of students were recognised by an enthusiastic audience of parents, staff and School governors at the Sports Evening. Headteacher Jonathan Maddox said, “It was truly a delight to meet Beth. She is charming, engaging and was genuinely
interested in our students’ sporting achievements.” Beth addressed the packed School Hall with an inspiring account of her career, from her initial interest in gymnastics, to the emergence of her talent and her progression to elite status and international competition as Britain’s greatest ever-female gymnast: a triple World Champion, a six-time European Champion, a Commonwealth Champion and seven-times consecutive National Champion. She painted a vivid image of the elation of performing when at one’s peak and the despair of doing so when not, and how injury can wreak havoc on an athlete’s programme of training and competing.

Broadgate Homes renews support for the South Holland Centre South Holland District Council’s arts venue, the South Holland Centre, is delighted to announce a 5th consecutive year of cinema sponsorship by local company Broadgate Homes. Broadgate has long recognised the value of community events and activities and has been particularly interested in supporting the Cinema programme at the Centre which reaches a large, diverse audience across the local area. Last year the South Holland Centre ran some 300 screenings of over 100 different films, and attracted a cinema audience of over 26,000 people of all ages. The Centre runs a mixed parttime film programme alongside its line-up of live shows and satellite screenings. The aim each season is to include something for all audiences
from children’s’ animations, to Hollywood blockbusters and arts and independent films. Ian Canham, Chief Executive said “Broadgate Homes is pleased to continue its support for the cinema programme at the South Holland Centre. This excellent facility allows everyone to enjoy a great choice of films without having to leave the District, hopefully our support helps to maintain this.” Sally Harrison, Centre Manager “Broadgate’s sponsorship has been enormously supportive to our film operation, for example helping with the costs of our regular printed cinema guide that is much valued by local people. It has been an excellent mutually beneficial relationship, and we are very pleased indeed that it is continuing into a fifth year”.
New College Stamford Welcomes New Principal New College Stamford has welcomed the arrival of new Principal April Carrol following the retirement of former Principal Andrew Patience. April comes to NCS from Sussex Coast College, Hastings, where she was highly valued in the role of Deputy Principal. Her experience will be a huge benefit to the College and the local community, and College students, staff and governors are thrilled with her appointment. April brings a wealth of education sector experience having also worked at City and Islington College and South Thames College in London. She is a highly respected additional inspector with Ofsted, and intends to continue this work in her new role to the benefit of students and the College. April said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining New College Stamford. The College has a vital role to play in providing excellence in education and training opportunities for the local and wider community and, together with governors and staff, I am determined to establish it as the outstanding provider of choice for students, parents and employers.” Chairman of Governors, Pat Terry, said: “The board are very pleased to have secured the appointment of April Carrol and welcomes her to New College Stamford. We are all looking forward to working with her in further developing our learners’ experience.”

On July 18 we posted a photo of a black Labrador which had been found in West Pinchbeck and asked if anyone recognised
him. Several of our Facebook followers knew the owner who had spent the entire day before looking for him before finally giving up for the day at 11pm. We put him in touch with the person who found him and they were soon reunited. We do love a happy ending!

Most will be well aware there is a general election in May next year and District Council elections too. A lot of young people are now leaving school either with a career in mind, a holiday job to earn some money, an apprenticeship or University. Whatever these young people end up doing it is important that they have a say in influencing both the policies and the people that represent them whether in local or national government, as these can have a profound impact on their future lives. There are a myriad of services and functions carried out by local and national government, including house building and affordable homes for young people wanting to get on the housing ladder, of which there is likely to be a huge increase over the next twenty years. With more houses come more people from different areas of the UK and Europe with differing needs, but most will require increased or improved road and rail infra-structure, medical facilities, dentists, care for the elderly, schools, leisure centres, parks and open spaces, refuse and recycling collections, street cleaning, markets, car parking, arts, culture and policing if we are to are to continue to have the quality of life we currently enjoy in South Holland and the surrounding area. We currently have a Transport Minister in Government in The Rt Hon John Hayes MP, Lord Taylor of Holbeach is the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Criminal Information with responsibilities for all Home Office business in the Lords, including the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill and the Immigration Bill and the Leader of South Holland District Council, Gary Porter, who in his Local Government Association role has weekly meetings with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. We will probably never be so influential again, so voting at elections is important and demonstrates than you can have a local influence on what happens and can make a real difference in your daily lives. The Cabinet Office and The Electoral Commission have made it easier for people of voting age to register to vote and have made the biggest change to vote registration in a hundred years. Individual Electoral Registration (IER) gives everyone individual responsibility for their own registration instead of using the old household forms. To apply to register to vote you simply go online at www.gov.uk/register-tovote. A person will need to provide their National Insurance Number and date of birth. This will be used to verify that the person making the application is who they say they are and will in turn reduce the risk of fraud and inaccurate entries on the register. All currently registered electors will have their name and address checked against government records so that they can be confirmed under IER. The vast majority of those already on the register will be transferred automatically without having to do anything. The local electoral registration officer will let them know that they have been confirmed on the new register or whether they need to provide further information. The new system was introduced on 10th June and the new registers will be published in December 2014. The new system is very much about encouraging under-registered groups such as students and home movers to register to vote. If you are a parent reading this and have recently moved house or have children of voting age then please do ensure you and they are registered to vote. Your vote matters and for young people in particular, can help shape the future of their lives by voting at elections, so make sure they are registered!

Working with Schools ❱ BY SGT SHARON HALL
Jim Tyner
Community Policing Inspector
When I joined the Neighbourhood Policing Teams back in January, I asked the Community Beat Managers what kind of engagement we undertook within the schools. I was surprised to find that we had all sorts of different activities, catering for all the school years, from pre-school to school leavers and beyond

e work with schools because early engagement with young people can prevent problems later on. As it is now September and back to school time, I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to share some of the good work done and being done by your Neighbourhood Teams within the schools. We start with a short talk for pre-school and early school years about people who help us. This introduces young children to police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs), and how they can help them, for example if they are lost. This can get quite noisy with a group of young children yelling “999” with the help of Bobby Bear encouraging them to shout it as loudly as possible! We have a Junior PCSO scheme for the older primary school children with topics for the children to cover over the school year and certificates presented at the end. I challenged the Neighbourhood Teams back in April to visit all the primary schools in Spalding to promote this, so we should now have this scheme running in all the primary schools in Spalding. For the secondary school children, we run a series of school talks covering various topics tailored to the age range for suitability and understanding. During the last term before the summer holidays we worked with other agencies bringing the “It’s that easy” workshop into some of our local secondary schools, discussing topics such as anti-social behaviour, the perceptions of it and its effect on the community. For college age teenagers, Pc Craig Lockton and I worked from last September throughout the academic year with the Post 16 Centre to deliver its Public Services course. We showed the students around the police station at Spalding and they also attended some training at our Headquarters, which involved some personal safety training much like the officers undertake along with the police fitness test, which I am happy (and relieved) to say we all passed! The students organized a five-a-side football tournament at
“This can get quite noisy with a group of young children yelling “999” with the help of Bobby Bear encouraging them to shout it as loudly as possible!” the end of the course with representatives from other agencies taking part. Fortunately, our Detective Inspector stepped in at the last minute for our team (and scored one of the two goals in our games) otherwise I would have had to have played! We will be working again with the students at the Post 16 Centre similarly in the upcoming year. Throughout the summer holidays, we attended many school fetes and local events and the Neighbourhood Policing Teams met lots of people throughout the Spalding area. Thank you to all those people in the community involved in preparing and hosting those events. Finally I would like to take an opportunity to remind you that when you are taking your children to and from school that you park considerately and also for those living near schools to be patient please. We do conduct regular patrols around these areas for your safety and advice is given to benefit all.

Advice
Help with mental health problems ❱ BY LISA BARWELL
Going to your GP If you’ve got a mental health problem, go to your GP they might suggest a number of things to help: • Referral to a community psychiatric nurse for counselling, or support at home. • Prescribe medication like anti-depressants or tranquillisers. Don’t be afraid to ask for information about these drugs, such as how they will help, how long you may have to take them, if they have side effects. If your GP has diagnosed a particular problem, ask them to explain why. Also, ask them for information about the condition and whether there’s a local support group. If you don’t agree with your GP’s diagnosis, ask for a second opinion but your doctor could refuse to refer you if they think it’s not necessary.
Medical records Mental health is a sensitive subject and you might be worried about having details put on your medical records. If your GP doesn’t prescribe any treatment, you can ask them not make a record on your medical notes. If details are put in your notes, ask to see them and check that the information is accurate. Your GP can refuse to show you the records, but only if they think it’s not in your interests to see them. No-one else, including members of your family, can see your medical records without your consent. However, in very serious cases, someone else might be appointed to deal with your affairs and they could see your records if the GP agrees, without your consent.
Social services If you’re having difficulty coping at home because of a mental health problem, you can contact your local social services department. You can also contact social services on behalf of someone else. Social services can provide community care services such as home helps,
day care services, meals on wheels or care in a care home. They will assess what support you need and decide if you’re entitled to any services. To find the contact details of social services, look under ‘S’ in your local phone directory.
Hospital Some people with mental health problems will need to go into hospital. You can be admitted to a psychiatric hospital either with your consent or without your consent. If you don’t object to going into hospital, you’ll be known as an informal patient. If you’re admitted without your consent, you will be known as a formal patient. This is also known as being sectioned or detained. You may be able to appeal if you’re admitted without your consent. The rules about people in hospital and their rights are complicated. To find out more, you could contact Mind, the National Association for Mental Health
Leaving hospital You shouldn’t be allowed to leave (discharged) from hospital unless there’s been a full
assessment of your health and social care needs. If you do need services, a care plan should be drawn up and agreed by you and your carers, your local council and your local Mental Health Trust. A special person called a care co-ordinator should be appointed to co-ordinate the care you will be given. If this doesn’t happen, make a complaint.
The police If they believe you’re suffering from a ‘mental disorder’, the police can remove you from a public place to a place of safety. This would usually be a police station or sometimes it could be a hospital. The police can do this if they think that you need urgent care or control and that this is in the interests of your own protection or the protection of other people. You can be held at a police station or hospital for up to 72 hours, examined by a doctor and interviewed by a social worker. They may apply to get you admitted to hospital without your consent. If you’re taken to a place of safety, you have the right to legal advice and to let someone know where you are.

The Bone Clocks
Chocolate Box Girls: Sweet Honey
David Mitchell
The new book from the author of Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green and longlisted for this year’s Man Booker Prize. One drowsy summer’s day in 1984, teenage runaway Holly Sykes encounters a strange woman who offers a small kindness in exchange for ‘asylum’. Decades will pass before Holly understands exactly what sort of asylum the woman was seeking... The Bone Clocks follows the twists and turns of Holly’s life, from a scarred adolescence in Gravesend to old age on Ireland’s Atlantic coast as Europe’s oil supply dries up – a life not so far out of the ordinary, yet punctuated by flashes of precognition, visits from people who emerge from thin air and brief lapses in the laws of reality. For Holly Sykes – daughter, sister, mother, guardian – is also an unwitting player in a murderous feud played out in the shadows and margins of our world, and may prove to be its decisive weapon.
Cathy Cassidy
The next instalment in the addictive Chocolate Box Girls series and sequel to Cherry Crush, Marshmallow Skye, Summer’s Dream and Coco Caramel. Honey is going to live with her dad in Australia. Determined to make a fresh start, she couldn’t be further away from the tough times at Tanglewood. Her new life is a dream come true - until school begins. The girls are different from Honey’s friends in England and the only person who seems to understand her is the cute boy from the beach she’s chatting to online. But when he, the girls at school and even her dad start breaking promises, who can she trust? All alone on the other side of the world, Honey’s past is about to catch up with her. You can order your copy today online, via phone on 01522 782010 or in the library with a member of staff.

Eat Local
Game On! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
We are always hearing about the importance of eating food that is in season and it has to be said that most of us are aware of when the best time to eat various fruit and vegetables are but what about meat?
M
eat such as chicken and beef are yearround staples but we live in an area rich with Game which is about to come into season in a big way so if you haven’t before, consider letting this wonderful meat onto your plate. Eating meat seasonally has many benefits. As well as reducing CO2 emissions it really does support the local economy. Plus if you haven’t ever eaten game it’s a good opportunity to try something new. If you have children then you can take the opportunity to talk to them about the origins of what is on their plate. You don’t have to go too far before you find an article discussing the fact that children are becoming less aware of where their food actually comes from – a recent poll for the British Nutrition Foundation highlighted this beautifully with children thinking that cheese comes from plants and fish fingers come from chicken or pigs. Scary data to say the least! Back to the delights of eating game! August sees the opening of Deer and Grouse season and September sees Duck, Goose, Partridge and Wood Pigeon with Pheasant following in October. Whilst you won’t find Grouse running around in Lincolnshire without being bred for the purpose you will everything else listed above. Duck and Goose are birds closely associated with Christmas (after the mighty Turkey, of course) and can be cooked similarly to Chicken. Goose is a much fattier meat though allowing you a wider variety of recipes. The best place to buy this meat is at your local butcher or farm shop as you won’t find too much game on offer in the supermarket and

that which they do have may come from out of the area. Spalding Farm Shop, for example, stocks Wild Rabbit, Partridge, Lincolnshire Wild Venison and Gresingham Duck Breast. Venison is a full flavoured meat which is low in fat and can be used in many dishes. Traditionally you will find venison in a pie, but you could make burgers or meatballs with it or keep it simple and use it for your Sunday roast. Loin is the most popular cut but the butcher will be happy to advise you which cut you will need depending on what you are making. Pheasant is a very versatile meat and, handily, it goes particularly well with vegetables which are in season in autumn. It also goes well with fruit such as apples, pomegranates, figs and berries. Partridge has a different taste but can be treated similarly when cooking. Wood Pigeon is a bit different in that it is a very sweet meat and therefore it lends itself to being pan fried. Wood Pigeon salad is a delicious meal but make sure you have it before it gets too cold – firstly nobody fancies a salad in the winter and secondly the older the pigeon gets the tougher its meat. Eating Wood Pigeon soon after their hunting season starts will assure you of a dish that is particularly tasty. Wild Rabbit is year-round game and great in many dishes. Rabbit is a mild flavour so be careful what you pair it with. Saying that, it will flavour a casserole beautifully. You can also roast rabbit. As with all meat that is not intensively reared, be aware that there may be shot in the meat – as a rule, if there is a tunnel shape running through the meat there is a good chance that you will find shot at the end of it! But this is the only thing you really need to look out for and the end product will far outweigh this minor inconvenience.
“Wild Rabbit is year-round game and great in many dishes. Rabbit is a mild flavour so be careful what you pair it with.”

Long Sutton
Stewart Garden Schools Campaign ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
S
Long Sutton County Primary School recently placed in the top 10 of a national growing competition
tewart Garden, the gardening division of UK manufacturer, Stewart Group Holdings, has named the top ten schools in the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign with Pippa Greenwood 2014. The schools worked hard to compete for a prize of £1,100. Open to all school pupils age 6-11, participating schools received a garden kit worth over £400. Inside the kits were three varieties of easy-grow vegetable seeds from Pippa Greenwood’s own range. Compost was donated by participating garden centres and professional grower’s specialist, J Arthur Bowers. Pupils received a booklet produced by Stewart Garden to help get them started and gain a better understanding of how to grow fruit and vegetables at home. Participants were challenged to show their creativity and inspiration with their Stewart Garden kits. The standard of entries was high and included DVDs of children using the kits, photographs, drawings, videos, scrapbooks and slideshows. In total, 100 schools across the UK, from the Isle of Wight to Stirling, participated in the campaign. The aim of the competition, which was first launched in 2012, is to encourage pupils to get involved in grow your own. This year 100 primary schools rose to the challenge and took part. The entries were whittled down to a top ten and Long Sutton County Primary School is among those names that made it through to judging. The top ten schools have since received a visit from the judges. Once their feedback is collated and analysed, the campaign winner will be announced in September. The winning school will receive £1,100 to be spent at their local garden
centre. The nine runners up will each receive £500. Pippa Greenwood, BBC Gardeners’ Question Time panellist, BBC Gardeners’World columnist and judge for the campaign, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed looking through all the entries for the Stewart Garden Schools Campaign 2014. It’s great to see children growing plants, especially fruit and vegetables, and learning so much. I congratulate everyone who got involved.”
In alphabetical order, the top ten schools are:

Diamond Vapours This family run business is doing its bit to stop people smoking, one customer at a time…
“After the consultation comes the fun part, choosing your preferences!”
2 South Street Boston Lincs PE21 6HE
D
iamond Vapours are an e-cigarette and e-liquid specialist based at South Street in Boston. They are on a big mission, to stop all things smoke related. Along with their 2 other shops in Lincoln in Gainsborough they offer a light and airy environment for you to come along and learn more about what they have to offer and take the first step towards becoming smoke free. E-cigarettes are battery powered vapourisers which mimic smoking by producing vapour which looks like smoke by using a heating element to vapourise e-liquid. Whilst early e-cigarettes looked just like a regular tobacco cigarette, today they look very different. Using e-cigarettes and e-liquids are a great way of slowly reducing your nicotine intake, your hands still have something to do and you can come away from the cigarette flavour and choose from the 50 flavours in store. If you are thinking about stopping smoking then the best thing to do is to come into the store and take advantage of the knowledge and experience of the staff. By asking a few quick questions such as how many cigarettes a day you currently smoke and how you would best like to stop (gradually or quickly), they will be able to establish the right products for you. Each flavour is available with differing strengths of nicotine ranging from 24mg to none at all. After the consultation comes the fun part, choosing your preferences! Firstly you need to choose your battery size and these come in a variety of colours from plain black to blinged pink. Then you can start to take a look at flavours of which there are many. You can choose anything from a cigarette flavour to some of the more fun and quirky flavours such as lemon sherbet and cherry cola. Diamond Vapours offer a ‘try before you buy’ service so you can make sure you enjoy the flavours you have chosen before you purchase them. A starter pack is available for just £28 which includes • your ecigarette • battery • charger • starter liquids • Comes with safety bag After top up cost add 3 for £10. After that all you need to do is pop back for top-up liquids. Top ups cost just £4 a bottle and should last just under a week, dependent on how many times you use
it. Compare that to how much you spend on cigarettes in a month and you will see the financial benefit on top of the obvious health benefits. After its initial charge, the battery will only need to be charged for around an hour and will last all day. Diamond Vapours work hard to ensure that their prices are comparable to those you will find online. All e-liquids stocked by Diamond Vapours are UK made and certified. The ingredients are simply glycerine, distilled water, flavouring and nicotine (or not, as in the case of the nicotine free versions). With conventional cigarettes containing over 7000 ingredients, many of which are carcinogenic, your body will thank you for making the switch. If you are thinking about giving it a try then now really is the best time -

Christenings
Christenings & Naming Ceremonies ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
People choose lots of ways to celebrate the safe arrival of their children, ranging from a party to a traditional Christening to a naming ceremony. It’s nice to have a variety of options but what is involved in the planning of each and which suits you best?
M
any people opt for a traditional Christening. If you would like your child baptized then your first port of call is to talk to your local vicar. They will tell you what you need to know and do as well as advising whether you need to have a special service or if it will be after the weekly Sunday service, which is often the case. Your biggest decision will come when you choose Godparents. In terms of choice, the Church would prefer that you choose Godparents based on their strong Christian beliefs as their role is to assist in the child’s moral and spiritual upbringing. And whilst it is not always the case, the Church of England prefers two Godparents of the same sex and one of the opposite. However you choose and for whatever reason it is a good idea to make sure it is someone you will stay in touch with. It sounds obvious but it is surprising how people consider only the present and not the future. If you don’t have one already you will need to choose a Christening gown. Traditionally these are long and cream for both boys and girls however the rules have relaxed greatly and today in most Churches children can wear any outfit. If you have a christening gown which is a family heirloom then it is a beautiful way of continuing a tradition or you could buy new or even make one yourself if you feel so inclined. When considering who you are going to invite, decide where you are going and what you are doing afterwards to make sure you are able to accommodate the amount of people you are hoping to invite. If you are planning tea and cake back at your home after the Christening then it might not be a good idea to invite 150 people! If, on the other hand, you are hiring a venue and using outside caterers then those numbers are feasible provided it fits your budget. If you are not religious but still would like a way to mark the arrival of your child then you might like to hold a Naming Ceremony. The British Humanist Association can help by way of a Naming Ceremony. You can perform the ceremony yourself or a qualified celebrant from the British Humanist Society or the UK Society of Celebrants can perform it for you. The ceremony can either follow the Celebrant’s format or you can work with them to create your own ceremony. These usually include readings in the form of poetry or prose and music. The only stipulation is that it is nonreligious. You can still choose people to look after your
child’s moral upbringing but rather than being called Godparents they are referred to as Guideparents or Supporting Adults. Unlike a Christening you don’t have to move on once the ceremony is complete, you can spend the whole day at the one venue which can be a great benefit when it comes to organsing the day. However you choose to celebrate the birth of your child, in Church, at home or at a venue of your choosing, making sure you are surrounded by the right people – friends and family who will offer your child love and security will ensure that you have a day to remember.
“If you are not religious but still would like a way to mark the arrival of your child then you might like to hold a Naming Ceremony.”

What’s New Pussy-Cat? Preparing For A New Kitten
Nothing beats a cute kitten. With tiny blue eyes and a teensy flag-pole tail, everyone’s in love. But before you go all gooey-eyed let’s be sensible for a moment there are some preparations to make. You’ll need some specific equipment for that new pussy-cat. Here are some tips to get the ball rolling Before you even think about preparing for your new arrival, is your kitten from a legitimate breeder or a recognised cat charity? There are many ‘kitten farms’ around, and if you buy from one, your kitten could well be sickly and inbred. You’ll need specialist kitten food and have it readily available because kittens eat small amounts on a frequent basis. It’s preferable to stick with the same food she is already eating to avoid any upset tummies, but if you want to change it, do so slowly, mixing in small amounts. Plain fresh water in a shallow bowl should always be on hand. Don’t be tempted to give your kitten cow’s milk, as this can upset tiny tummies too. Buy kitten milk which contains goats milk if you want to treat her. A new litter tray is a must. Make it a small one to start off with, as kittens can tumble into full-sized trays and become encrusted with litter (or worse!) Ensure that you clean it out regularly and keep it separate from her food area. Book your kitten’s vet trip as soon as possible. She’ll
need vaccinations before she can safely go outside. Whilst you’re at it, get her micro-chipped and look into pet insurance too. Vet bills can be costly, and kittens are especially prone to catastrophes. Keep her curiosity curbed by closing windows, propping open doors, and keeping toilet seats closed. Make sure your kitten has her own hiding space away from loud noises and other pets. A Feliway plug-in or spray that releases feelgood kitty pheromones is a good buy, as it can sooth stressed kittens. Bring something back from your kitten’s first home, such as her favourite play toy or blanket that she can sleep on. The big wide world is scary for a kitten without a mum, and a home scent will help your kitten to settle in. Don’t forget the toys! Kittens can be destructive, but that’s because they are tiny tigers learning to hunt. Invest in some tingly balls, knitted mice and a cat scratcher to save your furniture. Make sure they are good quality, so no loose fluff can get trapped in her mouth. Above all – Enjoy. Socialise your kitten, so she knows how to play with you. If you stop playing when the claws come out she’ll soon get the message! Welcome To Your New Home Tiddles!

Wardentree Lane
Wardentree Lane ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
A
Drive down Wardentree Lane and you’ll quickly see that it is the industrial heart of the town
s well as Morrison’s Supermarket you will find companies from many industries side by side on the road from local companies such as Uniq Prepared Foods to County Interiors and national companies such as transport giant Scania Ltd. So it’s safe to say that diversity is high on Wardentree Lane! One of the companies on this road, Lloyd Loom, has a fascinating history that still influences the company today. Now synonymous with Spalding, if you haven’t been before then pay a visit, it is well worth the trip. Lloyd Loom is the name given to a woven fabric and furniture that was invented by Marshall Burns Lloyd nearly 100 years ago. It inspired a generation of furniture designers in the 1920’s and 30’s, associated with the art-deco period and the classic ocean-going liners of the time. It became immensely popular in the UK before the London factory was tragically destroyed in the war, spelling an end to large scale production. Lloyd Loom weave is made from twisted paper and wire and the frames are traditionally made from steambent beech wood. The furniture is renowned for its longevity and durability. Manufacturing of Lloyd Loom furniture was started in Spalding in 1985 by David Breese, a Lincolnshire furniture maker. He had been supplying a growing demand for reconditioned pre-war Lloyd Loom pieces and was beginning to experience difficulty in sourcing good examples of the most popular designs. He researched the techniques involved in weaving the original paper and wire fabric and commissioned new looms based on originals from the Lancashire textile industry. He was already experienced in beech bentwood techniques and was soon experimenting with his first prototypes recreating the original designs. He gradually trained his workers until he had a staff skilled in the unique trades required for the creation of Lloyd Loom furniture. The weaving of the fabric and braids required, the assembly of the bent-wood

components, the complicated “upholstery” of the different models and the braid techniques required in finishing. In this way he revived techniques that had first been used in the 1920s. There was a strong demand for the new chairs and Lloyd Loom of Spalding extended the range, ventured into export and were soon sending the majority of their output to Germany, Holland and Belgium. The company expanded rapidly and in 1995 and several subsequent years won the Queen’s Export Award for Industry. Since then, the company has invested in cutting edge design and has introduced many new models, some in the classic Lloyd Loom style and some which explore other avenues, creating modern classics using the unique properties of the paper and wire material in innovative ways. The colouring process has also evolved over time, changing recently to recognise the growing demand for eco-friendly water based paints and the introduction of kraft paper dyed before the weave stage on some models, removing the necessity of paint spraying the end product. The best way to appreciate the craftsmanship is to take a look for yourself, the showroom is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30 – 5pm and Friday 8:30 – 4pm.
“Lloyd Loom is the name given to a woven fabric and furniture that was invented by Marshall Burns Lloyd nearly 100 years ago.”

Batemans Brewery
Craft Brewers A brewery run by brewers, not accountants!
B
atemans has been a craft brewer since 1874, based in Wainfleet Lincolnshire, just a few miles from Skegness. Batemans is extremely proud of its heritage and the part which the Brewery windmill has played in the history and success of the family company. In these days of multinational breweries mass producing their beers for an uneducated market, it’s nice to see Batemans is not only producing a wide range of enjoyable and quality beers, but is continuing to thrive and grow and reach new palettes. When it started in business 140 years ago, there was only one beer produced in the Wainfleet brewery, but by 1960 this had grown to eight different brews. These included three draught beers – a light mild, a dark mild and XB bitter supported by five bottled beers: IPA, Double Brown, Nut Brown, Dinner Ale and BBB. Up until the mid-70s naturally conditioned Guinness, Bass and Worthington was also bottled at Batemans. Up to 1995 Batemans bottled its own beers; the original range of IPA, Nut Brown, Double Brown and Dinner Ale was joined by Victory Ale, a beer brewed in conjunction with CAMRA to celebrate the end for the ‘Battle for Independence’ and subsequently Triple XB and Valiant. The latter three were not only sold in Supermarkets throughout the UK but also in North America, Japan and Europe. As volumes grew a decision had to be made about whether to invest in new
bottling equipment or have the bottling contracted out. It was decided to develop a partnership with Marstons which now bottles an extensive range which includes XXXB, Combined Harvest, Dark Lord and Victory Ale and a number of seasonal favourites. On the cask beer side, Batemans Brewery now brews five permanent brands. Dark Mild, voted Mild of the Year by CAMRA three times, XB, XXXB (voted ‘Beer of the Year’ at the Great British Beer Festival by CAMRA in 1986 and Premium Beer of the Year five times), Salem Porter (voted ‘Winter Beer of the Year’ in 1997 and 2005 by CAMRA), then in 2009 GHA Pale (Good Honest Ales) was added to the portfolio of permanent cask beers. GHA is a delicious pale beer, clean, crisp and zesty. ABV 4.2%. Batemans has also become known for
specialist beers and beer concepts. The first of these unique propositions was ‘Mr George’s Unique Flavours’. These were beers brewed slightly differently from the norm using various fruits of the season and other interesting flavours, e.g. strawberries, vanilla and liquorice to name but a few. The strawberry beer went down very well - the only problem was that it was difficult to get the flavour of strawberries out of the pipes! Since then the company has gone on to produce a wide range of commemorative and special beers for all manner of occasions such as the Skegness iconic Jolly Fisherman’s 90th birthday. As the perception of real ale moves away from fuddy duddy old men with big beards into a more widely appreciated art form, Batemans has moved with the times and its beers are widely regarded as some of the best in the real ale world. If you would like to see the process for yourself and fancy a taste then the visitor centre offer brewery tours daily at 12:30pm and 2:30pm (2:30pm only from October 1). Long Sutton Flooring ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
L
Quality Flooring, Quality Servicing
ong Sutton Flooring supply and fit all types of carpet, vinyl, laminate and wood flooring as well as being a Karndean specialist. Karndean Design flooring is luxury vinyl flooring which is inspired by nature to make the functional stylish. The results are stunning to look at yet easy to look after. Each comes with a selection of customizable features so you can create something really special and personal to you. Buying from experienced staff rather than over the internet or in a shop that has a carpet section is very important as you will be able to use their expertise. For example, they will be able to advise which type of flooring will go best in each room as they are able to assess suitability based on things like footfall and use. Plus they may be able to talk you round from the cream carpet for your child’s playroom to a more suitable colour or even a different material such as wood. They will know the brand of flooring which is right for you rather than you being faced with lots of different types of flooring and not necessarily knowing the key differences between them. Another benefit is the use of professional fitters. Fitting carpet, vinyl, laminate and wood is not as

easy as it looks (especially laminate and particularly wood) and if you choose to do it yourself and make a miscalculation or end up damaging your flooring then you may find yourself having to buy all over again. With a fitter you know they are qualified, have fitted flooring for many others and will do the job right the first time. And if there are any problems they can be sorted by the fitter which means no stress for you. Long Sutton Flooring are particularly proud of their service, offering benefits that perhaps others might not, such as moving your furniture out of the way and back again after the floor is laid and offering free measuring and free estimates. They will also price match within 30 miles for peace of mind so you know you will get the best deal from them. For more information please call into the store or telephone 01406 364333. New Car Registration
Will you still love me when I’m 64? ❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
The first day of September will see status-conscious motorists across the United Kingdom making a beeline for cars with shiny new 64 plates
B
“My advice is to stroll into a car dealership on the last weekend, or even better, the final day of the month, and sales staff will bend over backwards to do business in your favour.”
ut if you’re thinking of getting in on the latest registration game, think again. You may be able to get your hands on a new, or nearly new, car for much less cash. You see, September is big-game season for motor dealers. The forecourts will be swarming with excitable punters eager to get one over on their neighbours or colleagues by collecting a vehicle sporting a fresher than fresh registration plate. And the salesmen will be licking their lips at the prospect. But by waiting until the traders are nervously looking at their targets and speculating when their next bonus is going to fall into their laps, you could stand to save a considerable amount of wonga. My advice is to stroll into a car dealership on the last weekend, or even better, the final day of the month, and sales staff will bend over backwards to do business in your favour. Walk in at the end of a quarter, though, and you’ll be treated like a dignitary. You’re virtually guaranteed to be offered bargains galore, but try not to think he or she is pulling a fast one when you’re told a discount is only valid if the car is registered that month. You’re not being told porky pies. If you’ve got a new motor in mind, but you’re not fussed about the specification or colour, then a pre-reg snip might just be your thing. A pre-registered car is quintessentially a brand new vehicle. Most of the time, the paperwork has filed by the dealer to make their numbers look healthier and to keep the orders rolling in from the automakers. The cars will have been parked safe and sound on the forecourt with just the delivery mileage on the dial. The only real negative aspect is that the motor’s warranty will already have started counting down - and it won’t have a gleaming 64 plate. But with whopping savings to be made, does that really bother you?
38 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
Of course, vehicle brokers have connections with auto dealer networks and behave a bit like fixers. They assist customers find cut price cars and lend a hand to dealers who are trying to shift stock. They can usually hunt down the ride you’re after, even if it might not be to the exact spec. The largest cash savings are usually for customers shopping at the higher end of the motor market though. Take into consideration that a car identified for you by a broker might not have full warranty if it has been pre-registered. In all probability you won’t be able to part-exchange your current vehicle either. Also, a comprehensive investigation of a broker’s integrity won’t go amiss - it’s not too difficult to dig up nasty tales, so make thorough enquiries before consenting to a sale. Another plan at this time of the year is to let someone else take the hit on your behalf. There will be no scarcity of year-old give-aways on the forecourts as class -conscious drivers trade in their totally decent cars for something with an unsullied 64 plate. However, take into consideration that you may not be able to make back quite so much when you come to sell the motor on. So, whether you choose to purchase nearly new or you go for an up-to-the-minute 64 plate, make sure you’ve shopped around to get the best possible bargain.

Mercedes-Benz GLA This Mercedes-Benz is zippy on country roads and dynamic and frugal around town or on the motorway
B
❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
ut this isn’t just your standard high-quality Merc. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be available with the company’s newgeneration permanent all-wheel drive system, 4MATIC. The GLA is less imposing than many SUVs, and therefore it fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle. At the same time the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, fitted to my GLA 220 CDI model, guarantees plenty of recreational enjoyment. So, once you’re away from the daily routine, the car could tackle, say, rough terrain, the beach, and loose ground without a problem. As a composed everyday companion the GLA has a flexible interior. The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. In addition, the liberal luggage compartment can be loaded without difficulty thanks to a low sill and wide hatchback. The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy graining creates an attractive light effect and five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard. The Mercedes’ seats are sporty and supportive and controls for the electric seat adjustment are arranged on the interior
door panels. These panels are of extremely high quality, having a soft, plush feel about them. The GLA has a large, free-standing display set in the middle of the dash. It serves as a sat-nav and as an information source. But it has the unfortunate appearance of being stuck on at the last minute. A more integrated system would complete an otherwise perfect cabin. This SUV features a fuel-saving ECO start/ stop function; and the engine on the 220 CDI GLA is combined with a dual clutch automatic transmission, which marries efficiency and sportiness to an outstanding level. The set-up of the car’s chassis means you’re guaranteed a comfortable commute. And, compared with conventional systems, the GLA’s power steering provides brilliant feedback. The power steering also allows various assistance functions. These include countersteering if the vehicle oversteers; steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip; reducing the effects of front-wheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber. This technology gives you the confidence to turn hard into bends because you can sense exactly what’s happening beneath the tyres. The four wheel drive obviously adds to this assurance and fuels a belief that the

Merc will grip to pretty much anything at any speed. Numerous safety systems also offer support in the GLA and reduce your workload. Features include Attention Assist drowsiness detection and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, which helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 4 mph. So, if you’re a bit of car badge snob and you fancy yourself as fair-weather off-roader, then this could well be the motor you’ve been looking for. At over £31,000 the GLA 220 CDI 4MATIC AMG Line, reviewed here, is not cheap, but it’s one that you’ll be proud to own – and able to play with safely on days away from the office.
