Welcome to the December edition of Simply Spalding
December - don’t you just love this month?! I adore Christmas and all things to do with Christmas, whether it’s carol singers, snow, Christmas shopping or a simple catch up with friends and family who live away that I haven’t seen all year. Christmas is a season of good cheer and everyone is smiling. This issue is jam packed full with news of what is happening in and around Spalding. Of course it has everything you need to organise your own Christmas from where to buy your tree, how to look after to how to get your home read. Did you use our Christmas Cake recipe from last month? We have part II in this issue to show you how to mazipan and ice your masterpiece. Check out this month’s competition on page 13 as you could win a family ticket to see this years pantomime at The South Holland Centre, courtesy of Polka Dot Productions. To keep updated with advice, recipes and what’s on locally visit www.simply-spalding.co.uk. There’s even a for sale section, so you may pick up a bargain too! If you would like to get in touch then please email editor@simply-spalding.co.uk or call me on 0845 676 9295; we always appreciate your feedback and questions. Merry Christmas to you all from all of us at Simply Spalding.
Hayley x Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention Simply Spalding when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! A licensed Hackney Carriage vehicle can be picked up from a registered taxi rank or by hailing in the street, make sure the vehicles waiting bear this accreditation. If you do use a Hackney Carriage vehicle, ask the driver if he knows where your street is before getting in the vehicle. If they don’t know the local area then ask the next available driver. A quick check of the vehicle you intend to use should give you an idea of whether it is legal or not. There will be a licence plate on the rear of the vehicle with a number on it and expiry date. On a Private Hire vehicle there will be a smaller plate displayed in the front window..

If you regularly use a licensed vehicle you will know roughly how much your fare should be. If there is a big difference, report this to the Council. A driver who does not have local knowledge cannot charge you extra for his mistake. Report his badge number and vehicle details if possible. South Holland District Council says do not use a cab if: • the driver appears to be under the influence of alcohol • the driver does not seem to know the local area • the vehicle seems to be too old for use as a cab • the vehicle is in a state of disrepair • you are uneasy for any reason So, if you don’t feel safe in any way, the simple rule is do not get in that vehicle.

Two 2012 projects in Spalding receive funding Two organisations in Spalding have received a grant to fund an Olympic and Paralympic inspired project. The Ruby Hunt Centre in Spalding and Big Bloomers at Sutton Bridge have been awarded £275 between them. The Ruby Hunt Centre has been given £125 to run an Olympic themed sports and activities day for their elderly visitors during Spring 2012, and the funding will help to pay for transport and catering.
Big Bloomers: Sutton Bridge in Bloom has been given £150 to decoratively plant a 2012 themed display in the entrance to the Memorial Park in the village. The money has been funded through a Lincolnshire Sports Partnership project called Silver Spirit, which awards grants of up to £300 to community groups and organisations whose members are mostly aged over 50 years, and want to run Olympic and Paralympic inspired projects in the run up to the 2012 Games.
Offenders work in Community Payback Weston and Spalding. Work has included gardening and tidying up communal areas on SHDC sheltered housing schemes.
OFFENDERS have been paying back to the community by helping to tidy up areas of South Holland and sprucing up Spalding’s riverside. Lincolnshire Probation Trust, in partnership with South Holland District Council (SHDC), has been supervising teams of workers under the Community Payback scheme. Some of the work has been part-funded under the council’s designated members’ budget scheme, which gives individual councillors a sum of money to pay for grassroots community projects. The Community Payback teams have been operating in a number of parts of the district including Sutton Bridge, Long Sutton,
Councillor Gary Taylor, SHDC Portfolio Holder for Internal Services and ward councillor for Spalding Castle, said: “Residents in my ward have raised concerns with me regarding the condition of certain parts of the riverbank, in particular the condition of the wooden benches. We have now sought the services of the Community Payback team from the Probation service to carry out work in this area.

New Look Sainsbury’s Spalding Reopens To Customers Work to extend and improve Sainsbury’s popular Spalding supermarket has now been completed and the store has reopened for customers. Local scouts and school children were at the store for the re-launch ceremony on Wednesday morning (26th October), joined by local Scouts, South Holland Swimming Club and pupils from the Garth and Priory Special schools.
As part of the extension, the store will now operate Sainsbury’s Groceries Online shopping service, allowing customers to shop over the internet and have their good delivered to their doors. The extension has created around 65 new jobs, the majority of which have been taken by local people.
On the riverbank, in Spalding, the teams have been renovating and replacing benches and have been praised for doing a fantastic job.
Vision for a vibrant Red Lion Quarter ELEVEN firms have expressed an interest in taking on the future management of Spalding’s Red Lion Quarter.

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Route FIVE locations in South Holland have been awarded the privilege of hosting part of the relay route for the London 2012 Olympic Flame. Residents from across the district are being invited to savour the excitement of the occasion as torchbearers make their way through the five nominated communities of Holbeach, Long Sutton, Moulton, Spalding and Whaplode. They are among more than 1,000 villages, towns and cities announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) through which the Olympic Flame will be carried
by Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay which is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in South Holland to devise the route. South Holland District Council Deputy Leader Nick Worth said: “Having the Olympic torch coming through South Holland is a real coup and even better that it is coming through so many of our local towns, which will allow everyone a chance to see it close up and for the first time, really feel part of the 2012 Olympics. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity which is not to be missed.”

Advice - Save Money On Your Fuel Bills by Diane Clay
With the increase in fuel prices, many households will experience fuel poverty this winter. The Department of Energy and Climate Change considers a household to be in fuel poverty if it needs to spend more than 10 percent of its income on fuel for adequate heating (usually 21 degrees for the main living area, and 18 degrees for other occupied rooms). Living in cold homes can damage people’s health and affect their quality of life. The elderly, children, and those with a disability or long-term illness are especially vulnerable. Most households can save a substantial amount on fuel bills by using energy in an efficient way, and can be warmer and healthier as a result. Grants and discount schemes are available to help with fuel efficiency measures. Even if you have to meet some of the costs yourself, the savings on fuel bills can quickly repay the initial cost. For more information about how to use less energy and cut your fuel bills, go to the website of consumer watchdog Consumer Focus at: www.consumerfocus.org.uk. To get an idea of how much energy you can save in your home, you can do a home energy check. Go to the Energy Savings Trust website at: www.energysavingtrust.org.uk, or phone your local Energy Advice Saving centre on 0800 512 012. They can also give you information about how to generate your own energy. The website also gives you: • information on solar electricity panels (PV) • information on wind turbines • advice on energy cash back schemes including the Feed-in Tariff schemes (FITs) Under the energy cash back scheme, you can sell back any excess energy you have generated to the National Grid. The website also provides consumer guidance to help you to make a more informed choice when considering taking up any offers of free solar electricity panels (PV) in return for the income you have generated through FITs. Grants and schemes: There are various energy efficiency schemes and grants that are available. The main scheme is a home energy efficiency scheme known as Warm Front in England. The schemes are government funded and provide energy advice and grants to help with the costs of home insulation. They also help to improve energy efficiency for certain groups of people
including those on low incomes. The schemes cover both owner-occupiers and people renting accommodation. In some cases, the maximum grant available does not cover the full cost of the work and you have to pay something towards the costs. Help with home insulation is also available for home-owners and private tenants through a government scheme run by eaga Insulation. The scheme provides home insulation either for free or at a low-cost price, depending on whether you are getting certain benefits. You can find out more about the home insulation scheme from the eaga website at: www.eagainsulation.com. You may also be able to apply to the local authority for a grant, loan or other type of help for home improvements. What does the Warm Front Scheme cover You can apply to the Warm Front scheme for a grant to carry out one or more of the following: • insulation measures, eg cavity wall insulation, loft, tank and pipe insulation, draught-proofing of windows and doors, ventilation, hot water tank jackets • space and water heating improvements, eg gas room heaters with thermostatic controls, electric storage heaters, closed solid fuel fire cassettes, immersion water heaters, timer controls for electric space, water heaters and electric fan heaters in the bathrooms of properties heated by electric storage heaters • improvement to the energy efficiency, repair or replacement of any part of any space or water heating system • providing gas, solid fuel or oil central heating systems, conversion of open solid fuel room fires to closed solid fuel room fires, providing central heating systems connected to the local community heating grid • providing space or water heating systems which use energy from renewable sources. Who can get a Warm Front grant To qualify for a Warm Front grant, your property must be assessed as having low thermal efficiency under the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP)for Energy Rating of Dwellings. You can find out more about SAP on the website of the Department for Energy and Climate Change at: www.decc.gov.uk.

You must also meet some other conditions. You may be able to get a Warm Front grant if: • you own your own property. Some tenants may also be entitled to a Warm Front grant • you have not applied for a grant for another property in the last twelve months • you or your partner get Pension Credit • you or your partner get Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment And Support Allowance and there is also a child under the age of five in your household, a pensioner or a severely disabled person. How to apply for a Warm Front grant You can get more information about the Warm Front grant by going to the Directgov website at www.direct.gov.uk/ warmfront, or by calling eaga on freephone 0800 316 2805. Sheltered Housing Schemes
The Council provides sheltered housing throughout the district to meet the requirements of older people. It provides an environment which allows residents to keep their independence in homes which are suited to their needs. In the case of an emergency, help is provided either through the Scheme Manager or the- 24-hour emergency alarm system. The Council has nearly 1000 dwellings located at 28 schemes throughout the district from small groups of 10 dwellings to larger sites covering over 100. All Schemes have access to a nearby community centre. There are three secure door entry schemes in the district (Spalding, Pinchbeck and Crowland) which offer ground floor and first floor flats and bedsits for which we do not currently have a long waiting list. Anyone can apply for sheltered housing provided they are over 60 years old and either not in employment or not working more than 16 hours per week. Should you currently be in a council property, in particular if you are releasing a family home, there could be help at hand to make your move as smooth as possible. There could also be some financial assistance available. Please enquire about our Downsizing Scheme. You can be on the waiting list for both sheltered and non-sheltered properties, provided you meet the criteria. Should you wish to add sheltered accommodation to your application or if you have anything you would like to discuss regarding your application for sheltered housing please contact Lisa, Linda or Sheila on 01775 764528

Pinchbeck East Church of England Primary School We continue to plan exciting, interesting and stimulating activities for the children at our school. Our links to schools in Kenya, India and Poland have been recognised through the Full International School Award. Last year we began the process of building a portfolio of internationally themed events that took place in school. During this time, we have made links to schools at home and abroad, children have taken part in a variety of events focussed on the international dimension and we have raised a lot of money for charity. We are 1 of
only 11 primary schools in Lincolnshire to have achieved this award. At the beginning of term, the children enjoyed learning about international food with a mouth-watering demonstration from Chef Debbie. Children tucked into platefuls of healthy stir fry, curry and gazpacho - they even ate and enjoyed vegetables! Children at Pinchbeck East have been learning about sustainable living by taking part in the development of the school’s nature area. Over the last two years, children have worked with parents and the community to develop this excellent learning resource by adding a
International First for Spalding Schools The Gleed Schools in Spalding played host to a Youth in Action project funded by the British Council and the European Commission over 12 days at the end of September. The Youth in Action project - ‘Young Voices United Across Europe’ enabled a group of Albanian students from Saranda in the South of the country, to participate in a range of activities with the young people from Spalding. This is the first time a group of Albanian students have visited the UK to take part in such a scheme. Project co-ordinator Mandy North said the greatest problem had been obtaining visitor visas for all 33 participants once the grant had been awarded by the British Council. ‘All 33 applicants had to travel the 7 hour bus journey to the British Embassy in Tirana to apply for their visas in person, and then had to return home for a 3 week wait before a hearing if they had been successful. It was a very stressful time, particularly as each student had paid 100 euros for their application which wouldn’t have been refunded if they had not been successful. 100 euros represents over a weeks salary for most Albanians.’
The students and their leaders arrived on 15th September and stayed at the Travelodge in Spalding. Over the course of the next 12 days they worked with students from the Gleed Schools on a variety of projects based on the EU, Local and National Government, and ways in which young people can have a voice in a democracy. Together they all visited places such as Belton House Grantham and Cromer where they visited the Lifeboat Museum and did ‘crabbing’ off the pier! In Spalding a group of the Albanians were the guests of Bakkavor Foods, where they toured one of the factories and took part in a product tasting. Another group visited Spalding Power Station and were shown how the station operates. The highlight of the project was the visit to London sightseeing, which included all students taking part in a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament; visiting Greenwich by boat; and enjoying a performance of ‘We Will Rock You’. All 70 students and their Leaders received an invitation to the Albanian Embassy where they met the Ambassador and were able to ask questions about the country and the role of the Ambassador in the UK. The project ended with an evening of
pond dipping platform, seating area, raised beds and an orchard. This year the children are helping to install paths, a mini beast hotel, a hedgehog habitat and a shelter building area. Coming up soon, we have a Taste of India Day, our service at the War Memorial, lots of sporting competitions, a book fair, Christmas tree lighting, carol singing around the village and of course our Christmas play with the reception, year 1 and year 2 children.
Albanian dancing and karaoke at the Springfield Tavern, with all students taking part and singing Auld Lang Syne before saying goodbye to one another! Mandy North said ‘The project was incredibly successful for both UK and Albanian students. Friendships were formed and all students delighted in finding out more about each others cultures. It was great to see the students working co-operatively with one another and getting on so well. Despite the differences in cultures and lifestyles, the message that all the young people came away with was that all young people have the same interests, ambitions and aspirations. As one UK student wrote in her evaluation of the project ‘I found that students from Albania have the same opinions as me and they are not as different as I thought. It was fun to work with them, and I can’t wait to visit Albania.’ The Gleed Schools intend to build on this link and continue working on joint projects with the schools in Saranda. A group of Spalding students will be returning the visit next year to meet up with their new friends and explore Albania!

School News Surfleet Seas End School The children and staff have had a very exciting and busy term at Surfleet Seas End School. This term our curriculum focus has been based on Africa, where we have studied about this amazing continent. We have had encounters with animals both at school and at Africa Alive, where the children came up close with animals and had wonderful enrichment days. We have also been immersed in the African culture through learning to play Djembe drums, visiting the cinema to see the Lion King film in 3D, and producing lots of high quality curriculum based work, including lots of wonderful art work.
pumpkins. We have also enjoyed a school disco, a week of e-safety learning and our year 6 children have taken part in bike ability, which was thoroughly enjoyed. This term is finishing with a focus on festivals from around the world, where the children are learning about many different festivals that are celebrated differently by many cultures including Halloween, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Diwali, Hannuka, the festival of lights, Advent and Christmas too.
contribution of the federation. Ofsted reported that the school was an improving school that has improving standards, which have now accelerated above the national average. The inspector identified the good behaviour of the pupils as a particular strength of the school too, which is very pleasing as we are incredibly proud of the behaviour of our pupils. As a result of both schools having Ofsted inspections this year, we continue to be proud of working together, as a federation, to provide a good quality education through our small classes to the villages that each school serves.
The children have enjoyed entering a school pumpkin competition, where they put lots of effort into creating some gruesomely scary

Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been an exciting month for the children of Ayscoughfee Hall School. The year 6 children, particularly, have been celebrating a month of successes. The results of the eleven plus tests were eagerly awaited and an outstanding pass rate of 95% was achieved. On the sports field, the school won the Spalding year 5 and 6 tag rugby festival, winning the semi-final 3-2 against Bourne Westfield and beating Moulton Harrox School by the same margin in the final. To round things off, a 100% pass rate was achieved for the Bikeability course.
The year 6 class also enjoyed their recent visit to the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham. To help with their studies on Victorian England, they took part in re-enactments of a court case and life in a reform school. The children in year 4 have been to Surfleet Park for some “hands-on” experience for their science topic on habitats. In the reception class, our younger children enjoyed some help with their reading from boys from the Grammar School in a joint initiative. On the music front, the choir is looking forward to taking part in the
competition on 3rd December in the town centre at the Christmas Lights Weekend Festival. Looking further ahead, many of our juniors are already eagerly awaiting taking part in the “Young Voices” concert at the O2 arena in London next March. The children are beginning to get excited about Christmas and the infants are enjoying practising their Christmas play. Throughout the school, pupils are busy collecting items to support the annual shoe box appeal for less fortunate children in different parts of the world.

Youngsters enjoy trip to SHDC Youngsters enjoyed a lesson on the work of local government during a trip to South Holland District Council’s offices. Ten pupils from St John the Baptist Primary School in Spalding were given an insight into operations at Priory Road. They had a look at the council chamber – where local representatives make key decisions about local affairs – and were shown a display in the housing department of council-owned homes. They also learned about the work of South Holland Youth Council. A DVD on local democracy and the importance of voting were also part of the programme in an afternoon of events run with school governor and council Opposition Leader Councillor

councillors’ chamber.”
The children, aged eight to 11, and all recently elected members of the school council, were able to ask questions about the council’s work and took part in a mini-quiz on the council and politics.
Councillor Newton thanked all pupils and the teachers for visiting the Council Offices and gave them some promotional fabric bags, leaflets and pens to take away to commemorate their visit.
Shanice Forster, Year 6 Junior Road Safety Officer, said: “It was very useful finding out about voting and having a tour around the council offices. It taught me more about what the council did. I would love to go again.”
She said: “This visit gave pupils an interesting insight into what SHDC does and this is important as they are the political leaders and council taxpayers of the future.”
And Libbi Burchnall added: “I really enjoyed the trip because I got to sit in the

Reading Corner
by Joanne Phillips of Spalding Library
Adult Read of The Month - Started Early took my Dog by Kate Atkinson If you enjoyed the recent BBC series Case Histories about Jackson Brodie, try our book of the month, the new title in the series about the slightly off beat private detective with a complicated past. A crossover between detective novel and thriller the story races along but has a calm quality and an ending that won’t disappoint. It may make you laugh or cry and if you haven’t already discovered the other three books in the series then this will leave you rushing to read them. As with all Atkinson’s novels there are many layers played out through the novel. Tightly written, this is a real page turner.
Children’s Read of The Month - Yuck’s Super Cool Snotman by Matthew Morgan and David Sinden, illustrated by Nigel Baines One for Christmas, if you can forgive the slightly unusual title. There’s a whole series of Yuck books to discover. The appeal lies in the deliberately revolting language that appeals to boys of about 7-11 years, who will love the references to snot and other bodily functions. The books are illustrated in cartoon format. If your children have exhausted all the Horrid Henry titles then this is a new and rich source of disgusting with added Yuck factor. Parents beware you may need a strong stomach!

Tulips Update Spalding United Football Club’s 90th birthday celebrations continue on Saturday, December 17, with an evening of live music in the Tulips’ Social Club at the Sir Halley Stewart Field. Providing the entertainment are the extremely talented and much sought after fourpiece band 101 Proof. They have been gigging now over a very wide area stretching from Peterborough to Durham and from King’s Lynn to Sheffield with the original line-up, for 21 years. They are extremely busy but only very occasionally play in their home town – Spalding. Their play list is very diverse featuring artists like Steve Earle, John Fogerty, Tom Petty, Buddy Holly and Nick Lowe to name but a few. A good evening of lively music with a country base is virtually guaranteed so please do come along and support them and the football club celebrate special birthdays. Admission is free. On the football field the club has three home matches leading up to Christmas, entertaining 20
St Ives (Saturday 3rd), Cogenhoe (Saturday 10th ) and Daventry (Saturday 17th), the latter fixture giving fans the opportunity to watch some football in the afternoon and some great music in the club from 8pm. Sadly the club has not been afforded a home match over the Christmas holiday period. We travel to league leaders Peterborough Northern Star on Boxing Day, to Daventry on New Year’s Eve and to Sleaford on Monday, January 2nd. Our recent home match with King’s Lynn town on a damp and miserable Tuesday evening attracted an attendance of 425, the highest at the Sir Halley Stewart Field for seven years. It would be great to attract “gates” of this magnitude on a regular basis. To those football fans sitting on the fence we say, do come along and support your local team. You will be made most welcome.

By Toni Taylor Well, what a month! Doesn’t time fly? I’ve been so busy - nursery runs, Christmas shopping (I’ve made a start, but still lots to do!), housework, baking - and the list goes on. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for the Christmas break to spend some relaxing time with my family – with less rushing about to do. Bliss!

This month I had a lovely day in London with my mum doing some Christmas shopping while Ellie and Zac stayed at home with Dad. It was so nice to catch up properly with my mum, without the children taking all her time. Sometimes it can be hard to make time for quality time together. Although, I must admit that it did feel strange without the children - like most of you probably would do, I was ringing and texting home all day to check everything was okay, which, of course, it was. But the children weren’t missing me - they were having so much fun with Daddy; he’s usually at work in the week, so it made a nice and exciting change for them all.

When I got back from London, to spend some time together as a family we all made chocolate brownies together. We all got in such a mess but it’s all part
of the fun isn’t it? I think Ellie and Zac’s favourite bit was spooning the left over mixture out of the bowl. I remember loving this too when I was a child. It certainly kept them happy for ages! Unfortunately, they didn’t show as much enthusiasm when it came to the washing up…and neither did their dad! We were exhausted by the end of the day - but it was a fab experience. It also proved that in our busy 24/7 world, it is possible to make time to spend as a family. All the mess in the kitchen was certainly worth it! Now back to the chaos…

Easy Christmas Cake Part 2 By Rosie Willerton Hopefully you have enjoyed the cake making part from last month? Now it’s time for marzipan and icing. I cannot lie and so I have to be honest and for my cake I always cheat and buy ‘ready to roll’ marzipan and icing but if you fancy having a go yourself here are the recipes for you. For the marzipan Ingredients: Apricot jam (for glaze) 400g ground almonds 240g caster sugar 240g icing sugar 2 medium egg yolks 2 medium eggs 1 desertspoon of lemon juice 6 drops vanilla essence 4 drops almond essence 1 dessertspoon of brandy/ Irish whiskey Method 1.Heat your jam or jelly gently until just simmering and remove from heat. Using a pastry brush, apply to the cake’s surface (top and sides). 2.In a large bowl, sift the caster and icing sugar (this is worth doing as both can be lumpy and it takes seconds to sift). Add the ground almonds and stir well. 3.Beat the eggs, add them to the mixture and add the lemon juice, vanilla, almond essence and brandy. 4.Mix well, with a light touch. 5.Sprinkle a board liberally with icing sugar and knead mixture briefly until smooth. 6.Measure the diameter and the height of the cake with a piece of string. Rollout with a rolling pin to the correct size and apply to the cake. Smooth out the marzipan and finish with a hot knife if very bobbly. 7.If you prefer you can cover the top and then the sides as follows. Roll out the marzipan. Place cake topside up on the marzipan and cut to the correct diameter. Set this aside. Reform the marzipan and roll out a long thin strip the height of your cake. Apply the marzipan to the sides of the cake before you lift on the top. Smooth the joints and set your cake in a warm spot to dry the marzipan coating before icing. For the icing Ingredients: 2 egg whites 500g icing sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice Method 1.Beat egg whites lightly and add enough sugar to make icing that will hold shape. Blend in lemon juice to get desired consistency. 2.To ice your Christmas cake with royal icing, wait for the marzipan to dry on the cake. Then brush the marzipan with a bit of water, and spread with the royal icing. Allow the icing to harden, then decorate as desired. It’s really is as easy as that. www.simply-spalding.co.uk SIMPLY SPALDING 23 22

Beautiful Gardens
The beer garden is the idyll spot to while away those long summer nights. Surrounded on 3 sides by our amazing vine covered gazebo, character abounds. Our Carp pond is the perfect centre point, filled by a babbling brook from a mini waterfall and shaded in the evening by our very own Pear tree. With piped music to set the mood it’s a wonderful feature of the hotel. On the other side of the beer garden is the best bit of all; a large, secure play area for kids. With climbing frames, swings, a slide and lots of open lawn, the kids will be more than happy to play for hours while the Mums and Dads enjoy the peace and quiet.
Here at The Baskervilles we have it all. From creating the perfect wedding day, the Christening of your new pride and joy, birthday celebrations, gala dinners, Superleague Darts and more formal conference facilities. Our staff are here to help. We hope you have a pleasant time and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe It’snow joke! Winter walkies can be fun... It’s nearly back!
Paws for thought
So zip up your jacket and pull up your hood. Take out your gloves and your mittens to avoid getting frost bitten. Layers as ammunition! Winter is here! Despite the wet and the cold, our dogs still need their daily exercise. For some dogs, it’s no challenge and the sight of snow sends them into belly flops, hip deep in the thick of it, with a just a wagging tail and an eager wet nose to guide them through it. For others it’s tail between legs, ears down and shaking – before they are even brought outside. So a little common sense is needed come winter time – common sense and creativity!
Protection from the elements Make sure that both you and your dog are wearing adequate coats. Larger breeds are normally easier to adapt to colder temperatures, developing thicker, coarser coats to protect them from the icy cold. Smaller dogs typically have less body fat and shorter coats, making them more susceptible to shivers in cold weather.
Snow and ice can be very painful for your dog to walk in if the pads of their paws are not accustomed to the change in weather. Additionally, melting agents used to treat the snow, and salt used to stop people slipping on the roads and pavement, can get stuck between the pads of their feet and cause them to become sore.
Invest in a coat that is both waterproof and warm; one that covers their back and, more importantly, their chest. Rooke’s Pet Products are happy for you to bring your dog into the shop to try on the winter coats. That way, you can be sure you get the right fit.
23 High Street, Spalding PE11 1TX Tel: 01775 713005 www.rookespetproducts.co.uk 28
If your dog stops and lifts its paws, looking at you soulfully, it is probably experiencing some pain. To prevent this, you can try rubbing Vaseline onto its feet before leaving for your walk.
When you get home, make sure you have a towel handy by the door so you can clean off its paws thoroughly to make sure there is no salt or chemicals left on them. Using a little warm water can help with this.
If it’s particulalry cold outside rub Vaseline onto your dog’s feet before leaving for your walk. Let the weather be your guide If it is extremely cold, limit your time outside. You may want to try some indoor training to stimulate your pup’s senses and keep it occupied. Winter is a great time of year to enroll in indoor training classes! Both you and your dog may benefit from some active agility classes to keep you exercised and motivated during the cold winter months. And basic training never goes amiss. If you are outside, try heading to your nearest leash free environment where your dog can run and keep warm naturally. Wooded areas are also a great choice as they offer some protection from the environment and plenty of stimulation for your pet’s quivering nose.
Wooded areas are a great choice for walks in the cold weather they offer some protection from the environment and plenty of stimulation for a quivering nose! Identification Always make sure your dog is wearing a collar and ID. Go leash free ONLY where you know it is safe to do so. Take sensible precautions and take the time to have your pet microchipped; ensuring that they are clearly identifiable and traceable to you.
Wrap up warm and enjoy the snow; spring will be here before you know it!

Rugby – All You Need to Know
By Geof Nichols and Jeremy Chew
This month we teamed up with Geof Nichols and Jeremy Chew from Spalding Rugby Club to find out more about rugby, and its history in our area. Rugby – Game Overview In rugby, 15, 10 and 7 player aside versions are played. The most popular format is the 15 player game.
‘Tag’ rugby is the non-contact version of the game and is played up to the age of nine when tackling is introduced and the term ‘full-contact’ is used.
A senior game of rugby lasts 80 minutes and is played as two 40 minute halves.
Coaches and parents often comment that when ‘Tag’ rugby is played, players run into spaces and pass the moment tackling commences, game styles change and players get wrapped up in rucking and mauling for the ball instead of developing the flowing skills learnt in the early years. However, at Spalding RFC we are fortunate to be one of the largest junior sections in the three county set up (NLD – Notts, Lincs & Derby Constituent Body) within which we play. We have over 270 players registered between the ages 6-17, we also run two girls’ teams. Importantly, the players are supported by a qualified coaching team of 34 across the age groups, and without these volunteer coaches it would be impossible to deliver coaching to such a large set of players.
Fancy playing rugby?
The season is made up of approximately 17 fixtures played at home and away around the county.
If you want to learn more about the game of rugby and all that it entails, visit Spalding RFC or check out www.spaldingrfc.co.uk.
So if you’re under 18 and fancy a game, come and join in the fun!
The aim of the game is to attack the opposing side by passing the ball backwards - anyone who has coached children in the game of rugby will understand the challenges, and some senior coaches would also agree! Running forwards and passing the ball backwards, tackling the opposition and driving them off the ball are three of the core skills required. Add a player’s ability to exploit gaps in the opposition’s defensive line with 14 team mates that can be in close support, and you have the recipe for a good game! Unlike football, the referee is always referred to as ‘Sir’ (or ‘Maam’ if a lady). Any players back-chatting a referee risk a 10 minute spell in the ‘sin bin’ (they are sent from the field of play) or their team being marched back 10 metres towards their goal line. Points are scored - five points for a try (touching the ball over the opponent’s goal line); two points for converting the try (kicking the ball over the crossbar between the two uprights); three points for kicking a penalty; and three points for a drop goal.
Rugby Union – mini-youth under 6 to under 18 From the age of four, children start to play rugby in its simplest form.
daunting, but they persevered and on 18th September 1923 the rugby club held its first practice game. Those two forward thinking sportsmen were Willis White and Frank Herd. Their first match took place on 3rd November against Stamford School with Willis White being the first club captain. The following year the club’s headquarters moved to the White Hart Hotel, where two tin baths in the kitchen of the hotel acted as their baths. On the outbreak of the Second World War play ceased during the conflict and recommenced in 1946. Numbers slowly increased and during the season 1949/50 the club was undefeated. But as the plans were announced for the construction of the Coronation Channel in 1953, it meant that the club had to look for a new ground. The Headmaster and Governors of the Grammar School came to the rescue offering the use of the school playing facilities. A ‘hut’ was constructed on the side of the field and subsequently the social side of the club moved from the White Hart to St Thomas’ Road. In the years that followed the club became one of the premier clubs in the Three Counties comprising of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.
Did you know?
Rugby players are commonly referred to by most football focussed people as ‘egg chasers’!
Potted history of Spalding Rugby Club In 1923 two of Spalding’s active young sportsmen came up with the idea of forming a rugby club in the town. Without a field or facilities of any kind, the prospects for getting such a club off the ground seemed
The next milestone in the club’s history was the building in 1973 of the Spalding Sports Club on the Memorial Field to replace the ‘hut’. Since then the club has gone on to even further success - in the last 15 years it has won the Lincolnshire Cup seven times, the Three Counties Cup three times, as well as winning the Three Counties Shield on two other occasions. The club now plays in Midlands East One and regularly fields three senior sides.

Spotlight on Pinchbeck John Cleary from the Gentlemen’s Society takes a historic look at the village of Pinchbeck. The building of the new A16 Spalding to Boston road has undoubtedly speeded the motorist’s journey, and relieved the villages along the renamed B1356 of the juggernaut’s intimidating presence. But it has made the trip a less interesting one for those of us who enjoy the history of the area. The very winding nature of the old road, with its sweeping organic curves reminds us of the fact that this was once the sea bank in Saxon times and that the Wash extended to Bicker and Donington. Indeed the land is still marked on ordnance survey maps as Bicker Haven. The remains of sea banks in this area show the Haven shrinking until after 1645 when it became all dry land. Pinchbeck is the first village we meet along this route, now so built up is the area that only the Vernatt’s drain, crossed at Sharp’s Bridge, and the fields of Yew Farm are all that mark out where Spalding ends.
Next, the village proper. The medieval church stands back from the road and that disguises the fact that it is one of three local churches with a leaning tower. I am sure you all know the others so no competition and no prizes! The church is on the sea-side of the Saxon bank so cannot be on top of a wooden Saxon church. The earliest visible stonework is Norman in style. In the Doomsday record in 1066, Pinchbeck had two landholders – the Saxons, Earl Algar and Athelstan. Neither had a manor house in the village. The landholders in 1086 were Ivo Taillebois and Guy of Credun, again neither had a manor house in the village. Ivo’s lands were inherited by a lady called Lucy (possibly his daughter or his wife – records are unclear) on his death in 1094 and she passed them to Spalding Priory on her death in 1140. Guy’s lands were inherited by his son Alan who endowed Crowland Abbey in 1114.
Thus until Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538, there were few opportunities for the nobility to gain land in Pinchbeck. The first post-monastic names are Ogle of Ogle Hall and Robert Cust of the lost ‘Croswithand House’. Remains recently unearthed by the Pinchbeck Archaeology Group are believed to be that of Croswithand House – further work continues. Farming land Map 1. Spalding area. 1779 from Armstrong Lincs.
Though the Fenland Survey No 5 (1992 Hayes and Lane) did not cover the whole parish, evidence of Roman and Celtic Iron Age farming was found.
The first group of houses on the left-hand side of the road have curious groups of stone in front of them; small groups of shaped limestone and large slabs. These were placed here by the builder of the houses, a Mr Dawson as he was retiring and had to clear his yard of all he had collected. The smaller limestone shapes are Spalding Priory relics, but the slabs are part of the balustrade of Ayscoughfee Hall damaged by the earthquake of 1933!

Christmas Tree Guide
Christmas is fast approaching and it’s that exciting time of year when we all go out and look for the perfect tree, we have been talking to local expert Lloyd Barker from Baytree Garden Centre to bring you the best advice when buying your tree this year. The choosing of your tree is quite an easy process and hopefully the following points will be of assistance, you need to think about: Location (inside or outside) Budget Type (cut or rooted) Style (traditional or needle fast)
due to Queen Victoria’s husband Albert who was of German Descent where the tradition can be dated back to the late 15th century. Traditionally decorated with apples, nuts and other edible snacks like pretzels; the use of candles/ lights is representation of the stars, which were followed by the three kings and the large star on the top of the tree was their finishing point i.e. Bethlehem and the birth of place of Christ.
If you want to place a tree outside a traditional type tree will generally be suitable as the will be no issues with climate plus the heights available are greater. Baytree can supply this type of tree in heights up to 30ft! For an indoor tree the fir type are now the favourite kind to use, but don’t disregard a Norway spruce as they still makes a good economical tree.
Which Tree?
History
The Christmas tree has ancient historical origins but first became popular in the Britain during the Victorian era partly
In the beginning it was mainly Norwegian spruce (picea abies/ excelsa) which were used to celebrate Christmas, this type of tree is still used today but many people now opt to use them outside of the house and have a fir type within their house. The reasoning behind this is the needle holding attributes of the fir are far greater. As houses became better insulated and heating was improved it was found that Norway spruce dried out quicker leading to greater needle loss than the fir type trees.
The most popular of the fir varieties used is the Norman fir (abies nordmannia) this is because of its near perfect conical shape, bluish green foliage and needle loss can be has little has 2% (with the right care given).
Looking After Your Tree
The care of the tree is very important as this will determine the performance of your tree and if done correctly, it will last you well into the New Year. These are a few simple tasks, which will ensure a healthy tree. When buying a tree always check the shape, colour, height before you buy. Baytree like many garden centres have a team who will gladly assist you in this. You need to decide on the type of tree you would like – The Norway Spruce is usually referred to as a traditional Christmas tree or Nordman fir is now a very popular tree because of the reasons previously mentioned. Next decide whether you want a cut off or rooted tree, the majority of people now go for a cut tree as their gardens will not accommodate a rooted tree after Christmas. Once you have decide get your tree netted or wrapped this will allow easier transportation . When you have got your tree home, try to follow our steps to get the most from your tree: 1) Try to acclimatise your tree into its new surroundings. Because the tree is used to being outside, by placing straight inside it may shock the tree which can cause early deterioration, place it in a garage or shed for one day as this allows the tree to warm up gradually. 2) If you have purchased a cut tree saw of 2-3cms (1 inch) from the base of the tree this will allow it to draw up water more efficiently (the same principal has when you buy cut flowers). 3) Place your tree into a stand with solid base allowing the placement of water once it is in the desired position, which should be away from direct heat source. Top Tip - When you are setting up tree leave the netting on this will make the process a lot easier. When you purchase a rooted tree quite simply place in pot and place a saucer under the pot and water as required, the rest of the care is the same as for a cut tree. 4) Once tree is in position top up with water, remove the netting and allow to settle for 1 day before decorating. Sit back and enjoy. A question we are frequently asked after the Christmas season is how do we dispose of our tree so this year we will be offering a shredding service which will cost a nominal fee and all proceeds will go to charity (dates and prices yet to be confirmed). For anybody who has a rooted tree our tips on keeping it growing are: Place back into a garage or shed for 1-2 days to re-acclimatise, dig your hole twice as wide but no deeper than existing soil mark (top of root ball), place tree, firm soil and water in. In February or March apply a small amount of bone meal to soil surface to assist in root development. Good luck and a happy Christmas from all at Baytree. Preparing For The Festive Season Preparing for Christmas can be quite a stressful time, especially if you are entertaining over the festive period. It is no longer just about selecting the right gifts; it’s about being organised and ready. Sorting your home so that you can deal with the invasion of guests (some invited, some not) and working out just how you are going to feed everyone and where everyone will sleep, is, unfortunately, just the beginning.
However with some careful strategic planning, you can be prepared:-
De-clutter Do you have a room that is not used on a daily basis? What about that spare room that has become a bit of a dumping ground? What better excuse than visiting relatives over the Christmas or New Year period to actually sort it out? Think about making the room multi-functional – this is space that you haven’t utilised fully so make the most if it. Consider doubling the room up as a TV area during the day and an occasional bedroom at night – that way over Christmas any visiting children can use the room during ‘rest’ time to watch their favourite Christmas movies without disturbing the adults. When furnishing the room consider the option of a sofa bed - you can get some stylish, comfortable, easy to convert ones that will come in handy on those rare occasions when you have a number of people staying.
adults and can be used anywhere. They can also be easily stored when not in use. Sleeping arrangements If you haven’t got the luxury of unused space then just be logical about it. You might have to give up the main bedroom - especially if you have to utilise the living room as a make-shift bedroom. If you use the room it will help things run more smoothly and avoid any unnecessary ‘awkwardness’ in the morning if you are waiting for your guests to wake up. Besides with a house full you’re bound to be up early anyway! Check any inflatable beds and spare bedding. If they have seen better days invest in a couple of blow up beds and extra ‘fluffy’ pillows and duvets. Making your guests feel comfortable is important, so don’t leave it until the last minute to check them. Food Be prepared and have your menus sorted. Consider any allergies or requirements people may have. If you don’t know – ask as this will avoid any embarrassing moments. Storing food could be an issue. So start munching your way through your freezers contents now to free up some space. Look through cupboards and throw away any condiments, tins, cereals or sachets that are past their sell by date and any items that you haven’t used in the last six months. Make the most of the new found space and stack your festive food carefully and logically. Eating arrangements Ideally everyone needs to be eating at the same time. If necessary consider purchasing a sheet of MDF and polystyrene sheeting to place over your current dining table – once it is covered and decorated, no-one will know the difference and it will allow ten people to be

If you really are particular about creating a Sue runs successful interior wow factor design company, Tidy Interiors, with your here in Lincolnshire. Same applies for all your plates, cutlery, serving dishes and pans. See what you can borrow from the family and friends who may be spending Christmas elsewhere, again think about colour schemes if appearance is important to you. Alternatively, find some plates that can be purchased singularly – there are plenty of bargains out there so have a good look round.
Whatever your plans this year, remember, that spending time together is what is really important, so accept any help that’s offered, don’t try to do it all yourself and definitely don’t try to keep the house as tidy as normal. And the most important thing – enjoy it!
Create space Creating enough space so that people can move around easily and comfortably will help them to feel more at ease and relaxed so look around your home – is there any way you can create extra space? It might be as simple as removing the coffee table from the middle of the lounge. Look at the furniture you have scattered around, could anything be moved into the garage on a temporary basis? If you have young children visiting, move any expensive ornaments so they are out of reach. This will prevent people being on tender hooks when excited children are running around Christmas morning. Seating If your seating is limited, think about investing in some bean bags or cubes. These are great for children and young

Peugeot RCZ GT THP 200 THE RCZ GT I had on test looked lovely. It even appeared quite sexy from some angles. And guess what? It drove like it looked. It had grip, it was as sharp as an arrow and it was fun. Basically, it seems that Peugeot has followed in the footsteps of the Audi TT. You can’t blame the French company for doing so, after all the TT is still a great looking car after all these years. I guess the RCZ injects a bit of insanity into the family/ executive oriented image of the Peugeot line-up, and perhaps it is intended to evoke memories of the gloriously insane 205 GTI days? The front of the car is good looking, but the rear is really where it’s at; the car is genuinely attractive and even has a
pop-up spoiler that can be controlled by pressing a button on the centre console. I liked the spoiler so much that I kept it up. It made the car look mean and more serious. Bizarrely, the RCZ GT gained as much attention as the Aston Martin I had on test the week before. Madness, I know, but people, I think, are still trying to work out what it is. The TT influence is obviously there but I sense there are hints of the Nissan 370Z too – and that confuses folk at first glance. The colour scheme of my press car made the RCZ look great - dolphin blue with black integral leather trim. It was really like adding lip gloss and eye liner to an already very alluring woman. It worked for me and it seemed, judging by all those turning heads, everyone else.
The RCZ 200bhp model I had on test had loads of kit including electric and heated seats, front parking sensors, follow-mehome lighting and even fat 19” alloy wheels. Better still, it was capable of 146mph with a 0-62mph sprint of just 7.6 seconds. Yet, driven sensibly, the car can be very economical – returning around 40mpg. So, in my opinion, if you’re in the mood for a fun and flighty motor, which won’t cost you the earth to run, the RCZ GT might be just the car you’re looking for.

own woods! Whether you have a dog to walk or just fancy a family day out then it doesn’t need to cost a fortune. We fill up a flask and throw in some wellies for the owners, a bowl of water for me and off we go. Bourne Woods is a favourite of mine as it’s only 15 minutes away, yet it feels like a different place. There are a couple of different routes you can take depending on how fit you are or how long you have got. Make sure you pack a picnoc for a budget day out as there are lots of
nice spots to stop and refuel. We headed on to Stamford after our walk and enjoyed a stroll across the meadows and then a walk around their farmers market. It was a Sunday when we stumbled across it but I unfortunately cannot find anymore information for you about when it is on. If you would like to explore Pinchbeck Wood you can find it just on Northgate as you head out towards West Pinchbeck. The wood forms part of the Woodland Trust’s ‘Woods On Your Doorstep’ project, which is supported by the Millennium Commission, and which has created 200 new community woods within walking distance of towns and villages. This woodland creation site was made possible by Pinchbeck Parish Council from whom the Trust has taken a long lease of the land, and by the support of the local people of Pinchbeck who helped in the design, naming and planting of the wood.
