Outstanding care at Molsom & Associates
Molsom & Associates Optometrists are one of the first practices in the County to have invested in 3D OCT digital scanner technology so offering a unique service to their patients.
Diagnosing eye conditions early could save your eye sight.

Molsom & Associates Optometrists have always believed in the need to stay abreast of all the latest developments in technology and believe that it is through clinical excellence that patients visit their practice. “OCT digital scanning technology is the next generation in imaging the internal structures of the eye. The unique way in which the image is formed means that for the first time it is possible to see below the surface of the retina and view the microscopic layers beneath. This means that we can make a precise diagnosis of the visual condition, such as Macular Degeneration, referring our patients to the correct specialist Consultant for treatment with the minimum of delay.” said Mr. Molsom.
3D OCT digital scanning technology offers patients an outstanding level of care. Molsom & Associates Optometrists: Molsom Optometrists: 5 Hall Place, Spalding, Lincs, PE11 1SA 20 Market Place, Donington, Lincs, PE11 4ST Tel: 01775 713366 Tel: 01775 821888 www.molsom.co.uk

Communities Urged To Join Diamond Jubilee Fun Street parties, fetes and large public events are expected to be held up and down the country this year to toast the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne.
occasion of this magnitude happened was in the days of Queen Victoria. It will not happen again in our lifetime and is an event that you can all join in, that will make you proud to be British.
To help you get organised and ensure your event goes with a swing, South Holland District Council will be producing a toolkit or checklist on what to do ahead of the celebrations which will be taking place from Saturday, June 2 until Tuesday, June 5.
Grants are available for street parties and community events from a number of organisations including South Holland District Council’s Designated Budget Scheme where each councillor has monies available for local projects and initiatives.
Organising small, private street parties and fetes is straightforward and will not normally require licenses . However if you are thinking about a larger event, planning to have a pay-bar, charging admission, selling food, providing entertainment or want to close your street for an afternoon, there are licenses and legalities involved which you can get help with.
The Street Party Toolkit will be available to download at http://www.sholland.gov.uk/leisure/ TheQueensDiamondJubilee2012.htm If you have any questions please contact the Community Development Team at SHDC on 01775 761161 or email community@sholland.gov.uk

Almost everyone over thirty has at some time watched this legend of the small screen set in a small town in occupied France during the Second World War. It revolves around the antics of the café owner, Rene and his wife Edith as they try to hide and keep hold of a priceless portrait of “The fallen Madonna with the big boobies”. Added to this Rene has to keep secret, from Edith, the passionate lust felt for him by his two glamorous waitresses. The situation is further complicated by The Resistance, who are putting pressure on Rene to hide two RAF pilots, and the Gestapo, who want the portrait. The script, written by Jeremy Lloyd and
David Croft, the pair who wrote the original TV series, not only contains all the original characters, it maintains the brilliant level of comedy which kept the country glued to their televisions every week for several years. This show probably produced more catch-phrases than Bruce Forsythe, such as “Oh Rene”, “Whadda mistake to maka”, “God moaning” and of course, Michelle’s famous quote “Listen very carefully, I shall say this only once”. The show is at the South Holland Centre in Spalding from Wednesday the 21st to Saturday 24th March at 7.30 each evening. Tickets are available now from the South Holland Centre telephone 01775 764777. We have teamed up with St Nicholas Players to give away two pairs of tickets, to be entered into the draw please send your name, address & telephone number to Allo, Allo Competition, Simply Spalding, PO Box 1014, Spalding. School News
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils - Do You Have Exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simply-spalding.co.uk.
Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a bright and enthusiastic start to the Spring term for the children of Ayscoughfee Hall School. The school welcomed 9 new children at the start of January, including 5 in the Kindergarten, and all have settled in really well. The school also supports work experience and has welcomed 3 new students from the Gleed Post 16 college. The Kindergarten children are enjoying learning about how animals such as birds and hedgehogs prepare for the winter, looking at their habitats, food supply and care that they need. Year 1 children have built a construction site in one corner of their classroom to learn more about how houses are built. Year 2 have adapted their studies on famous people this term to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Scott’s expedition to the Antarctic.
In the Junior classes, the Year 6 children are looking forward to their visit to the cathedral and mosque in Peterborough to develop their religious and cultural understanding. In addition, all of the Juniors are eagerly awaiting their trip to the O2 arena in London for the “Young Voices” concert in March. Here, they will have the opportunity to sing with over 10,000 other enthusiastic children. As always, it is a busy time on the sports field. The football team have reached the finals of the Lincolnshire schools competition and are also playing in the Independet Schools Association (ISA) tournament at Stoke College. The cross country team are also running in the ISA competition in Essex.
Ayscoughfee Hall School For your children’s future “The quality of provision in the early years foundation stage is outstanding”
Holbeach Bank Primary School Tuesday 3rd January saw the opening of a new pre-school at Holbeach Bank Primary School. Sunshine Pre-School was officially opened by Adam Taylor of Taylors Bulbs, and is run independently from the school.
Ashley Harrison, chair of the pre-school said, “There was a lot of demand in the area from parents for a pre-school and this was supported by the Birth to Five service. We have places for 26 children and there are still places available”.
Wisbech Grammar School Top marks have been awarded to the boys’ and girls’ toilets at Wisbech Grammar School, which were transformed during the summer. The sparkling makeover has won a five-star rating in the 2012 national Loo of the Year Awards and the first-class facilities also took the title of ‘national category winner’ after achieving the highest aggregate score out of 57 education sector entries from male and female toilets in the
United Kingdom. An official inspector paid a surprise visit to every establishment that was entered for the awards and the top-quality toilets at the grammar school ticked all the boxes when they were assessed by husband and wife team Tony and Kitty Neal against 100 judging criteria, including signage and décor, fixtures and fittings and overall standards of cleanliness and management.

School News Weston Hills CofE Primary School Year 3/4 children have performed their Collective Worship to parents in January with an Egyptian theme. They spent Term 2 studying the Egyptians and their lifestyle, and will be bringing it to life on stage for parents/carers to enjoy. Family Learning are running a ICT course in school for parents for 10 weeks. It is aimed at any parents/
grandparents/carers of children in school who would like to learn basic computer skills – they are having fun and learning too! We are organising a trip to London in the Spring – every two years we take Year 5 & 6 children to London to look round the Houses of Parliament and to go on the London Eye, it is a fantastic day out and one that
children really enjoy. We are very fortunate to have such an active PTA, it is principally about raising extra money for the children and doing it in a way where everyone has fun! This year they will again be organising several fund raising events including School Discos, Bag2School and a Summer Fayre.
Surfleet Seas End Primary School The children have settled back into school with enthusiasm towards our new topic about Heroes and Villains where we are looking at real life and fictional characters as well as historical events such as Florence Nightingale, the Vikings and the World at War. Visitors and trips planned for this term include historical re-enactments in school, a visit to local Chinese Restaurant to celebrate Chinese New Year, a CSI forensic Investigation Day, as well as the British Legion visiting to provide history about local officers who served in WW2. We also have plans to enhance the use of ICT with the children creating e-books about their favourite superheroes.
As part of the work on the World at War years 5 & 6 have been on a trip to Freiston World War II Centre. The children dressed as evacuees and took part in practical activities learning about rationing, travelling in a military vehicle and exploring WWII buildings and lookouts. On hearing the alarm, they took cover in an Anderson type shelter in the woods. The children experienced World War II games and wrote a letter home. They also had a practical cookery lesson and used some strange ingredients to recreate popular wartime delights that they were able to take home. There was a problem solving activity too, where the children climbed different areas of the tower and used a secret code to locate a buried box where they found a pleasant surprise.

Dance For Fitness
By Hayley Willerton
Dance fever is sweeping the nation and could be your secret to a healthier and fitter lifestyle. Dance is the UK’s fastest growing art form. More than 4.8 million people regularly attend community dance groups each year in England alone. Whether you like to jump or jive, tap or tango, shake your belly or your booty, dancing is one of the most enjoyable ways to get some exercise. Regular dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination and beating stress. One of the best things about dancing is that while you’re having fun moving to music and meeting new people, you’re getting all the health benefits of a good workout.
Feel The Burn
Average number of calories a 60kg (9.5 stone) person burns in 30 minutes: • aerobic dancing: 195 calories • fast walking (4 miles per hour): 150 calories • running (6 miles per hour): 300 calories • swimming (slow crawl): 240 calories • cycling (12-14 miles per hour): 240 calories • tennis (singles): 240 calories Source: At least five a week, Department of Health, 2004
Before You Start
Classes can cost as little as £3 to £10 for a 45 or 6o minute session. If the first class you try falls short of your expectations, don’t be put off. It’s worth trying a few different classes until you find the right one for you. Wear comfortable clothing that gives you freedom of movement and shoes appropriate to the dance style. Some classes, such as ballet, tap or jazz, may require
12
specialist footwear depending on your level. Avoid wearing jewellery, such as earrings, rings and necklaces, which can scratch you or get caught in clothing.
Recommended physical activity levels
• Children aged under 5 years should do 180 minutes every day • Young people (5-18 years) should do 60 minutes every day • Adults (19-64 years) should do 150 minutes every week • Older adults (65+ years) should do 150 minutes every week
Dance Styles
Not sure which dance style you’d like to try? Below is a quick guide to some of the most popular dance styles taught throughout the UK. Ceroc Ceroc is a simplified version of jive and quite similar to swing but without the complicated footwork. Ceroc, short for the French phrase “C’est rock”, evolved from jive, which was introduced by American GIs stationed in France during the Second World War. It’s fun and easy to learn, which explains why it’s the largest and fastest growing partner dance in the UK. Street dance Street dance describes urban dance styles that evolved in the street, school yards and nightclubs, including hip-hop, popping, locking, krumping and breaking. These dances are practised competitively as well as being an art form and a form of physical exercise. Ballet The first ballet school, the Académie Royale de Danse, was established in France in 1661. Today there are three main forms of ballet: classical, neoclassical and contemporary. Ballet’s conventional steps, grace and fluidity of movement are a great foundation for dance in general. Contemporary Unlike dances such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific techniques. In contemporary dance, people attempt to explore the natural energy and emotions of their bodies to produce dances that are often very personal. Salsa Salsa dancing is a fun and flirtatious form of partner dancing, fusing steamy Afro-Caribbean and Latin styles into simple and lively movements. The word “salsa” is Spanish for “sauce” (usually hot and spicy), which is an appropriate description for a dance that is energetic, passionate and sexy. The basic steps are easy to learn and you’ll salsa your way across the dance floor before you know it. Ballroom Ballroom dancing has made a comeback in recent years, partly thanks to TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Strictly Dance Fever. There are many styles of ballroom dancing from around the world, such as the waltz, tango and foxtrot, and each has specific step patterns. It is essential for both partners,
the leader as well as the follower, to know the steps so they can dance together. Zumba Zumba is a popular fitness programme inspired by Latin dance. The word “Zumba” comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that is great fun and easy to learn. Flamenco From Andalucia in Spain, this is the dance of swirling skirts, castanets and breathtakingly fast heel stomping. Flamenco’s musical and dance traditions are centuries old, blending gypsy, Moorish and Andalucian influences. Flamenco is a solo dance characterised by hand clapping, percussive footwork and intricate hand, arm and body movements. Tap Tap dance uses shoes with small metal plates on the soles to make the dance itself part of the music. Tap evolved in America and had its roots in African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. Tap is as popular today as it was in the heyday of the great Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly musicals, and companies like Tap Dogs demonstrate how contemporary it can be. Bollywood Bollywood dancing stems from the Indian film industry and is now popular throughout the world. It is known for being upbeat and often helping to tell a story or show emotions. Bollywood dance blends classical Indian dance forms, with its intricate hand gestures and footwork, with modern western styles, including hip-hop and jazz. Modern jazz Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. Jazz dance evolved alongside jazz music and was popularised in ballrooms across the US by the big bands of the swing era. Jazz dance offers a full body workout, developing dance ability, flexibility, strength and rhythm. Care Home Fees By Paul Ha mmond, Cavendish Walsh Thousands of elderly people face having to sell their houses to pay for care home fees. In parts of Britain, the average cost has soared by more than 31 per cent in five years. The fees are around £26,000 a year and soon they will outstrip the £29,000 charged for a year of education at Eton. Under the current system, care home residents must fund the cost themselves, unless they have less than £23,250 in assets – including their homes. Both income and capital resources are assessed. • Above capital of £23,000 no contribution will be made by the local authority. • Capital below £14,000 a full contribution will be made by the local authority. For many if their savings run out, they are forced to put their house on the market. At least 20,000 people a year have to sell their house to pay for care. Yet with professional advice and pre-planning this can be avoided.
‘Giving away’ a home to children fails to protect the home owner and provides no guarantee that the home will not be taken into account for financial assessment. It also opens the possibility that the home may pass to unintended parties through divorce, bankruptcy or if a child dies before a parent. You could consider a Home Protection Plan The Home Protection Plan is a strategy designed for homeowners, whether single or couples, usually living on their own, to put the home beyond the reach of contributing to care fees and to achieve one or two other benefits set out later in this document. The plan involves the transfer of the home to a trust.
Under the trust, the settlor (the donor/former homeowner) is also a beneficiary so that once the trust is created he, she or they can continue to live in the home for the rest of their life or lives or for as long as is wished, on a guaranteed basis. The trust gives a guaranteed right of residency and security of tenure for life or until the point where continued residence in the home is no longer required or appropriate. The trust would be the new owner of the home and therefore the home should no longer count as a capital resource. For more advice call Paul Hammond, will writer for Cavendish Walsh Ltd 01775 517010.

Adult Read of The Month -The Real Katie Lavender by Erica James Recommended by Jane at the library as the best book she’s read in ages. If you haven’t already discovered Erica James, this is one to start you off. This is a busy book with a lot going on. Katie Lavender learns that she’s not who she thought she was and the book is full of real people that you will recognise as you follow the story. There is a nice ending that will leave you with the feel-good factor, just what you need on a cold winter evening.
Children’s Read of The Month - War Horse by Michael Morpurgo To tie-in with the film release, this month’s choice is War Horse by former children’s laureate Michael Morpurgo. Joey, a farm horse, is sold to the army. His courage in the midst of the chaos of World War 1 inspires the soldiers around him. Suitable for good readers from about 9 years up, this book can also be enjoyed by adults. The story is sad and will have you reaching for the tissues at times, but I suspect this is a book you will come back to and your children will want to share it with their children. Reviewers have described this book as ‘tremendous’ and ‘wonderful’, high praise that should encourage you to read this book immediately. Michael Morpurgo is a renowned children’s author and writes for a variety of age groups so if this is a little difficult for your children try some of his other books such as Dolphin Boy.

On 14 February, a health trainer will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on living a healthy lifestyle. This free service, provided by South Lincolnshire Community Volunteer Service, will be available between 9am and 12pm. An ideal opportunity to get information on giving up smoking, reducing alcohol consumption and much more. If you take an interest in local history, the library has a loan copy of Michael J Elsden’s excellent new book, which completes his Aspects of Spalding series. This book covers the years 1900 – 1970. The social history of the town is set out in pictures, text and examples of advertising from contemporary sources. This book will certainly awaken memories or, if you are new to the area, illustrate what town life was like in the early 20th century. Our borrowers have voted this ‘his best one yet’. Tulips Update After sealing their long overdue partnership with the town’s leading junior club last summer, and purchasing a ”holding” bond on a sizable plot of land just off the A16 main road, the big question is as we enter a New Year, is the time right for the Tulips to take another significant step forward and explore the possibilities for re-location? The Tulips have repeatedly stated over the years that they were happy to continue playing at the Sir Halley Stewart Field, their home for the past 90 years, but with its inadequate facilities for training the town centre location is not suitable for them to further cement their association with Spalding Athletic Junior FC. At present Athletic has around 180 young players covering all age groups training at three different venues on five evenings each week and then playing matches on Sunday’s. Clearly not an

Conferences – up to 700 delegates, Seminars – from small groups to 200 delegates, Meetings & Special Events, Promotions, Entertainment, Corporate Parties, Trade Shows & Exhibitions, Weddings & Family Celebrations
It has always been the Tulips’ priority to deliver a sustainable future for football in the town and with that in mind, and following their partnership agreement last summer, they took the plunge to secure the purchase rights on a 10-acre parcel of land adjacent to the A16 road south of the town with the idea of turning it into a training complex for both clubs. But the time has possibly arrived when they must consider closely the broader spectrum and develop their out of town site into a fully functioning stadium. The possibility of this happening has already been tentatively discussed by a newly formed Steering Group comprising members of both senior and junior clubs. While talks appear very positive it is far too soon to speculate whether or not a move from the Sir Halley Stewart Field would be made.

By Kate Chapman Being a full-time mum is definitely the best and most rewarding job I have ever done - in fact I wish I hadn't waited so long. It's also probably the busiest too, as my little princess 20-month-old Nancy - is constantly on the go! To say she has ants in her pants is an understatement, she can’t sit still for toffee and likes to be entertained her every waking moment (apart from when she’s settled herself to reading a magazine or my new Next catalogue, which if the mood takes she can do for hours on end, well, until she gets fed up and starts ripping up all the pages that is!). And I’m going to have double trouble on my hands soon with Baby Chapman number two due to arrive in the Spring. And even though I can’t even begin to get my head around having two little people in my charge, I’m excited to say the least and wouldn’t change a single thing.

So that’s introduced ourselves; I hope you enjoy reading about Nancy’s antics and our ups and downs in the coming months as we move ever onwards towards the terrible twos! So, for now I’ll bid you farewell, until next month....
Looking back though, working fulltime during my first pregnancy was practically a breeze compared to chasing round after Nancy all day, nevermind with a burgeoning bump to contend with with as well! She made her entrance promptly into the world - two weeks early in fact, weighing in at a teeny 5lb 12 1/2 oz, and has been following that trend ever since, striving to run before she can walk at every opportunity. Her boundless energy, demands to be picked up and ‘thrown about’ (she’s a

Business Focus - Countrywide Lawn Doctor
Looking After Your Lawn Natures Way By Bringing Life To Your Soil
Generally in life, the more natural something is, the better it is. Feeding your lawn is no different. In the last few years turf grass management techniques have been stuck in a cycle of feed - fungicide - then more feed. Doing this sets up a chain of events. The grass becomes dependent on nitrogen, so more feed which then creates more disease, therefore more fungicide. The only people who gain out of this are the suppliers. These practices are not sustainable (as many very high profile golf clubs have found out to their cost) because over use of chemically produced fertiliser is contaminating the soil.
Fact. In almost all cases of poor lawn health the reason lies within the soil
and not the grass. Fact. The soil has its own food chain managed by millions of microbes living within it. Fact. We rely on these microbes to convert whatever we apply as a feed to usable energy that the grass plant can uptake. Fact. Most fertilisers primarily contain NPK (nitrogen, phosphates and potassium) plus sometimes trace elements such as iron, magnesium, calcium etc. The majority of these fertilisers available to both the DIY and professional markets are inorganic and chemically produced, and contain high levels of salt. Fact. Salt is a major soil contaminant and kills the microbes that are needed to convert these fertilisers into usable energy. These microbes also break down thatch (dead organic matter) which produces humic acid, another natural plant food. If we destroy them this process effectively stops, and thatch builds up uncontrolled.
Before
The effect. If thatch is allowed to build up (over 15mm becomes a prob-

lem) then water does not penetrate effectively and no oxygen can reach the root zone. As a result the plant becomes shallow rooted and weak and has no defence against drought. Scarifying and aeration are then a fundamental requirement to remedy the situation. In some cases where the thatch has built up to higher levels then scarifying can do more harm than good.
The solution. Soil and grass is
Grasses, from grazing land to cereal crops, provide a large proportion of the nutrient energy that feeds the planet. Surprisingly, almost 50% of the nutrients that grass and other plants synthesise using the sun's energy, is released back into the soil in the form of sugary root exudates to feed and stimulate the growth of microbes the soil living bacteria and fungi. These microbes in turn encourage healthier growth of the plant by recycling nutrients from organic matter in the soil, making these and other nutrients and water more readily available to the plant and by suppressing the activity of disease causing soil organisms.

Oven baked sea bass wit h romesco sauce
In association with The Black Bull, Donington T:01775 822228 A: 7, Market Place, Donington
This is a great simple supper for 2 which can be served with a large salad, or for a more substantial meal, the ever-so-easy potato & mushroom bake featured below!
First, prepare your sauce. Roughly chop (not too small) your tomatoes and peppers and crush your garlic cloves. Place everything on a baking sheet large enough so that everything is in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and grind over plenty of salt & black pepper. Roast in a hot oven (200c or 180c fan) for approximately 25-35 minutes, stirring once half way, until the vegetables are soft and just beginning to char on the edges.
Ingredients:
4 x boneless sea bass fillets, skin on (2 per portion) Olive oil Butter Lemon Juice Salt & freshly ground black pepper For the sauce: 2 large very ripe tomatoes 4 red peppers 2-3 fat cloves garlic Walnut oil (approx 4tbsp) Salt & freshly ground black pepper
Meanwhile prepare your sea bass for the oven. Lightly oil a baking sheet or glass dish large enough to lay the fillets next to each other, skin side up. Arrange your fish on the tray, lightly season and add a knob of butter to the top of each fillet. Squeeze over the juice of half a lemon and add the splash of white wine to the dish. The liquid here keeps the flesh moist but allows the skin to crisp up. Your fish is now ready for the oven and can be cooked straight away, or kept in the fridge until needed. Bake in a hot oven, uncovered, for approx 12 minutes (depending on the thickness of your fish). Baste half way through to ensure a crispy skin! To finish the sauce, add the cooked vegetables and garlic to a blender and blend to a rough paste. You will need to add enough walnut oil to loosen the puree, but not to make it runny and oily. About 4 tablespoons should be quite sufficient so don’t use it all if you don’t need to. Gently re-heat your sauce in a small pan or even in the microwave when your fish is just about cooked. To serve, divide the sauce between two serving dishes or plates, arrange the fish on top, skin side up and enjoy!

6-8 cooked salad potatoes, thinly sliced Small punnet mushrooms (about 100g) Knob butter Tablespoon plain flour Half glass white wine (approx 100ml) Whole milk or cream to finish Salt & pepper Pinch dried thyme leaves 1 tbsp butter, melted First make your mushroom sauce. Thinly slice your mushrooms and add to a sauté pan with a large knob of butter. Cook the mushrooms gently until they release all
their moisture, then increase the heat until only a little liquid remains in the pan. At this stage, add your flour and cook over a medium heat, stirring, for a minute or so. Now add your white wine, stirring constantly until all is incorporated and you have a really thick sauce. Add milk or cream until the sauce is thinned down to the consistency of custard. Season well and add the thyme. Butter a small gratin dish. Arrange a third of your sliced potatoes in the dish in an even layer. Add half of the sauce, then arrange another third of the potatoes on top. Add the remainder of the sauce and finish the dish with the remaining potatoes. Brush the top layer with melted butter and bake in a hot oven for approximately 10-15 minutes until hot and bubbling and the top layer is golden brown.

r e n r o C s ’ t Pe He grooms me, he grooms me not... February is the month most associated with love. And while we reach for the roses and chocolates for our loved ones, it’s a great opportunity to think about sharing the love with your pets as well… and what better way than a good pamper?! Pets, like humans, vary with their needs for grooming. Some of us use combs for our hair, some of us use brushes. Some of us wash our hair daily, others, a few times a week. Whilst some pets may be more high maintenance than others, it is important to develop a grooming routine.
Available for both cats and dogs, long and short haired, the FURminator is a great grooming tool and has long been a preferred choice of professional groomers. It reaches deep beneath the long topcoat to gently remove undercoat and loose hair. Not only does it improve the condition of your pet’s coat, it also reduces the amount of hair they shed on the furniture and floor!
“The advice in the UK for pet grooming is you should brush your pet daily!”
Pets cannot communicate with us easily. If they have an irritation or a pain, they can’t simply tell us. And we may not be able to tell if there is something bothering them by just looking at them. Daily stroking and grooming not only allows us to bond with our pets, it also gives us the chance to get to know their bodies and notice any changes to their skin, lumps and bumps and even pains that they might shy away from when we touch them. Brushing The advice in the UK for pet grooming is that we should brush our pets daily to keep their coats shiny. Obviously this is more important for some pets than it is for others. An Afghan Hound is going to need vastly more brushing than a Labrador for example. But whilst you consider how regularly you brush, also consider the type of brush you use. There are a vast array of brushes available to choose from; from soft bristled to long tooth combs. If you’re unsure of the best choice for your pet, why not pop in store and we can help you choose the best option. Long or short haired, it is also worth considering investing in a de-shedding tool, such as the FURminator.

Bathing Funnily enough, you can actually over wash your dog. This isn’t good for them as it depletes the natural oils in their coat, which can lead to skin irritation. As owners, the tendency is to want to wash them more often than not. However, some dogs only need a bath every 3 months! If you have a naughty pooch who likes to jump into the first available puddle, it becomes a carpet and furniture saving necessity! Perhaps just consider the best clean down option. Can you get away with a hose down or wash away the grime and grub with a little warm water for example?
The key for both cats and dogs is that only the hook end is trimmed. Too much trimmed off will lead to you cutting the blood vessel that runs through the nail. This will cause bleeding and can be painful. Rooke’s has a range of nail clippers to choose from and can advise you how best to use them. However, it is important that if you don’t feel confident about doing it, or if your pet is nervous about having it done, get a professional groomer or vet do it for you.
Either way, when it comes to a soapy doggy bath time, it is important that you choose a good dog shampoo and don’t just reach for the first available human brand. Someone in store can help you to choose the right option for your pet.
“Unclipped nails can curl inward and start to grow into the skin causing infection.”
Teeth Cleaning your dog’s teeth is just as important as keeping his coat healthy. Dogs can be prone to periodontal and gum disease. In fact it is thought that at least 85% of dogs over 5 years old develop dental disease. This can so easily be avoided by adding teeth brushing to your grooming routine. Ideally you would brush your pet’s teeth daily, but something is better than nothing! It is the cumulative build up that starts to cause problems for your pooch. Don’t be tempted to use one of your old brushes and a bit of your own toothpaste. Not only can human toothpaste upset your dog’s tummy, but the brush will not be designed to do the job properly. Rather, invest in a proper dog’s brush and perhaps even some meat flavoured toothpaste! Nails Nail clipping can be a fine art. Unclipped nails can curl inward and start to grow into the skin causing infection. Dogs who are exercised regularly on hard surfaces will probably need their nails trimmed less than a dog who spends more time on soft ground.
Ultimately grooming your pet is important for their health, but it should also be about bonding. Our pets love our attention, so make sure the process is a fun and enjoyable experience, not one that you both dread. A little loving care given often is better than a perfect, stressful overhaul every day!
Cats don’t tend to need their nails clipped as they keep them trimmed themselves by biting, scratching and clawing. However, a house cat who is less active may need hers trimmed occasionally.

I Don’t Know How They Do It
By Hayley Willerton
Working full time, running a home and looking after a dog and cat seems to take all my time up, so I watch in awe at friends who throw children into the mix too. I ask myself when do they have time for themselves as I struggle as it is! Sometimes all you want is a day if not a few hours of peace, quiet and an opportunity to clear your mind of everything. Ragdale Hall near Melton Mowbray offers just that and the team at Simply Spalding went along this month to check out the facilities and de-stress after a busy few weeks. As soon as you pull into the carpark you just seem to slow down, the tranquillity of the place just makes it happen somehow. For me a spa is a place devoted to overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage the renewal of mind, body and spirit. Depending upon what your goals are, and what you are looking for in a spa experience, you will need to plan in advance where to spend your time to make the most of your break. As a group of 6 it can be difficult to decide what to do with your day but I think we managed to keep everyone happy – we started off by meeting our guide and having a much needed cuppa and toast which was very welcome after the 7am start to make the most of the
day! Initially it felt like we were losing time but I think it was invaluable as our guide talked us through the day, where to go and makea few recommendations too. I have been to Ragdale on a few occasions but this was my first visit since the addition of The Thermal Spa - and what a difference it makes! The morning was spent exploring the 12 luxurious and unique experiences - many have been exclusively designed for Ragdale Hall - the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Natural materials including rocks, stone and lush planting abound the Thermal Spa Entrance, and as you walk from the pool area inside, excitement builds. The outside waterfall pool is a personal favourite – come rain or shine you are able to bathe outside in numerous bays and inlets carved into the pool’s structure. In winter as the steam and mist rise from the pool you feel like you are bathing in a hidden lagoon. A gorgeous 3 course lunch was served in the oak panelled dining room and for a group of ladies who can normally talk for England, all that pampering had left us very quiet and after just a couple of hours we were all certainly ‘chilled out’. The afternoon was booked out to treatments – a full body massage and facial were my choices but with
26
such a range to choose from there really is something for everyone. I am the one who hates taking my towel off on the beach and a communal changing room sets my heart racing, but the therapists were all so friendly that they put you at ease straight away. To be honest, you are wrapped up on a beautifully comfy bed, so you forget all about it. I think I even dozed off at one point! The one thing I would change for next time is booking for an overnight stay as I could have quite easily sloped off to bed with a good book and it would have been the perfect ending to a lovely day. Customer service at Ragdale Hall is first class and throughout the day all members of staff were genuinely pleasant and helpful, there was not one thing to fault – other than I was soon back to reality after a few days! To book your own spa break at Ragdale Hall visit www.ragdalehall.co.uk or call 01664 433000

Disability Guidance Guide Researched by Kate Tarrant
Arm Yourself with the Facts This month we are raising awareness of the support and information available to those who live with a disability. Being armed with the facts can help ease everyday life, reduce stress and enable you to enjoy independent living. Everyday life
The Motability Scheme
When it comes to increasing accessibility in the home, specialist equipment and adaptations can make living independently easier from stair lifts and ceiling hosts, to having doors widened and ramps installed. There are also a wide range of gadgets available.
Buying and adapting a car can be expensive. The Motability Scheme run by the independent charity Motability - gives disabled people the opportunity to lease a car at an affordable price.
Always ensure you seek professional advice before buying equipment or make changes - and ensure you can try equipment first. A wide range of gadgets and devices are available that make everyday tasks easier for people with specific disabilities. Some examples are: • clamps and holders to keep jars stable so they can be opened with one hand • talking kitchen scales for people who are blind or visually impaired • alarm clocks that vibrate under the pillow for deaf and hearing impaired people • kettle tippers for people who have limited arm strength or restricted movement • devices that remind people with memory loss or learning disabilities to do a daily task, for example taking a pill You may have to pay for the equipment yourself. If there’s equipment that’ll meet your needs (as assessed by the local council), you can use your direct payments to pay for or towards it. The Disabled Living Foundation has a large range of factsheets, including a number of factsheets concerning equipment for use about the home. Visit www.dlf. org.uk/content/factsheets-groups for more information.
Different ways to do everyday things Sometimes equipment may not be the best way to meet your needs. Instead of buying equipment, you may be able to change the way you do everyday things to make them easier. An occupational therapist may be able to suggest ways of doing things that you have not considered. © Crown Copyright. Source: www.direct.gov.uk
Alarms - knowing help is not far away Knowing that help is not far away when needed, is a great reassurance for anyone wanting to live an independent life. The Disabled Living Foundation factsheet ‘Choosing a personal alarm system’ can guide you through the options available. Visit www.dlf.org.uk/factsheets/ Choosing_a_personal_alarm_system.pdf . Many local authorities provide community alarm services - visit www. sholland.gov.uk for more information about the services offered by South Holland’s Supported Housing team. Alternatively, call 01775 764461.
Sheltered Housing Sheltered housing is accommodation built for older people and/ or disabled people. The accommodation is usually self-contained flats or bungalows. Joanne Craik, the council’s Supported Housing manager explains: ‘Sheltered housing could provide an answer for you if you are looking for accommodation that allows you to live totally independently but with the knowledge that there is support available should you require it. We have around 1,000 homes, bungalows and flats, in 28 locations within the South Holland area which offer support through the 24 hour emergency alarm system or the Scheme Manager, especially designed to meet the needs of people over the age of 60. All schemes have access to a nearby community centre. The waiting lists, especially for the Spalding area, may not be as long as some people think.’ For more information, call 01775 764461.

How the scheme works The Motability Scheme can help you with leasing a car if you’re getting either the: • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement • Higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Even if you do not drive yourself, you can apply for a car as a passenger and propose two other people as your drivers. You can also apply for a car on behalf of a child aged three or over. The child must be entitled to the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.
Contract hire Through the contract hire scheme you can lease a new car supplied by a Motability accredited dealer for at least three years. Insurance, routine servicing and breakdown assistance are included. You may need to pay for the fitting and removal of any adaptations. You can apply if you have 12 months or more of your Disability Living Allowance ‘award’ remaining. If your award is not renewed during the full length of your chosen scheme, your car will need to be returned. At the end of the period the car is returned to Motability Operations, the not-for-profit company, which operates the car scheme under contract to Motability.
Powered wheelchairs or scooters Motability also offers a contract hire scheme for powered wheelchairs or scooters that includes insurance cover and routine servicing for the agreement’s three-year duration.
Financial help and VAT relief If money is a problem when financing the car or adaptations, Motability may be able to provide a grant. This will be either through their own charitable fund or the Specialised Vehicle Funds, which they administer for the government. Disabled people don’t have to pay VAT on the cost of hiring a car through the Motability Scheme. The cost of any work involved in adapting a vehicle for a disabled person is also eligible for VAT relief.
Contact Motability To find out more about the Motability Scheme, contact Motability on the numbers below, or visit their website. Telephone: 0845 456 4566 Minicom: 0845 675 0009. www.motability.co.uk © Crown Copyright. Source: www.direct.gov.uk
Holidays The National Accessible Scheme The National Accessible Scheme (NAS) helps the tourism industry make
their services more accessible, allowing more disabled people to use them.
The scheme and its associated standards The NAS identifies how accessible accommodation is to people who may have difficulty walking, use a wheelchair, or have a sensory impairment. The ratings are split into three categories, for: mobility impaired people; blind or visually impaired people; deaf or hearing impaired people. The individual ratings are represented by symbols displayed on websites and used in promotional literature such as the Easy Access Britain guidebook. Information about the scheme, including pictures and explanation of the symbols, is available on the enjoyEngland website (www.enjoyengland. com). You can also search for hotels, B&Bs, campsites and self-catering accommodation rated under the NAS.
Independent assessment If a property displays the NAS symbol then it has ensured a comfortable stay for guests with hearing, visual or mobility needs. To get the NAS symbol they have met the requirements of the NAS and have been independently audited by trained assessors. Accessibility features may include handrails, ramps and step free entrances, level-access showers and colour contrast in the bathrooms. Members of staff may have attended a disability awareness course and know what assistance will really be appreciated. When you see one of the symbols, you can be sure that the accommodation and core facilities have been thoroughly assessed against demanding criteria. If you have additional needs or special requirements, you should make sure these can be met by your chosen establishment before you confirm your reservation. © Crown Copyright. Source: www.direct.gov.uk
More info This feature only scratches the surface - for more detailed information including the facts about your rights at work; benefits, grants and financial support; and what to do if you feel discriminated against, visit www.directgov.uk. The Disabled Living Foundation (www.dlf.org.uk) has lots of downloadable factsheets to help with choosing equipment for the home. For more detailed information about specific types of equipment, visit the DLF’s other website, www.livingmadeeasy.org. uk. The DLF also run an online community www.youareable.com which encourages support of help through the sharing of experiences. DisabledGo (www.disabledgo.com) provides detailed online access guides to a huge range of venues, including cinemas, hotels, hospitals, colleges, sports grounds, restaurants, council offices, parks, historic land marks and tourist attractions. Their aim is to give you information so that you can make up your own mind whether a venue is right for you. The Citizen’s Advice Bureau and local authority will also be able to offer advice on support and information available. All information correct at the time of going to press.
Looking for a home where you can keep your independence but get support if needed? Then why not look at a South Holland District Council sheltered housing scheme, devoted to the needs of older residents. We have 1,000 sheltered homes in 28 locations in the district. Scheme manager on-call in emergencies OR a 24 hour Care Centre via the alarm system. Flats and bedsit accommodation in secure door entry schemes in Spalding, Pinchbeck and Crowland. oving home when you have a growing family to feed, clothe and support can be an expensive task in this day and age. Just buying a property for over £250,000 will cost you at least £7,500 in Stamp Duty alone. So if you think you need more space, before you pack up boxes and moving it’s worth considering making improvements to your home rather than moving. Area can be an important factor when moving, so if you like where you live it is definitely worth seeing if you can work with your existing property to meet your needs.
If you do decide to move, you need to try and make the home as easy to clear up and clean as possible. You may only get 30 minutes notice for a viewing, or if you are all out during the day and the agent wants to show someone round, the place needs to be really tidy every day. It can be tough with busy lives but it’s worth the effort if it means you can sell your home as quickly as possible and for the best price.
If it’s an extra bathroom you are after, maybe you can take some room from a larger bedroom or put a sink in the current bedrooms. Have you thought about having a separate the bath from the shower so several people can use it at the same time (if that works for you and your family!). For several thousand pounds you could easily fund an extra shower and loo and it will probably add value to your home too, improving the equity levels and in some cases this may mean getting a better mortgage deal in the future!
If you are anything like me, I watch lots of house programmes and the one piece of advice they all give when selling a property is to: Declutter! We all accumulate lots of stuff from toys to games, DVDs and CDs. It’s now time to box up what’s not required to show off the real space available in your home. Remember, most people can’t see past your furnishings and decor, so you have to make the effort to do it for them.
“
One thing which happens when you have a busy lifestyle is rooms tend to lose their purpose. Dining rooms double up as offices, hallways a space for the bike, the spare room becomes a ‘dumping ground’. That’s fair enough when you are living there, but if you are selling, every room must have a clear purpose. Box rooms need to be offices that can ideally be turned into a bedroom in an instant if required. If rooms are big enough to have a double bed, make sure they do, or prospective home hunters will just believe that the room can only fit a single bed. The last thing any kid or teenager wants to do is tidy up regularly - unless you are very lucky! So make this as easy as possible. Easy and temporary storage is helpful so things can literally be ‘chucked in’ and put under beds, in cupboards or run up to the loft if you have easy access.
“
Extra rooms can be added and put in the garden, over a garage, or at the back of your home if you have the space for less than £10,000 so it’s worth considering and chatting through these options with a builder before taking the plunge into marketing your home. Alan Greenacre from Pyramid Home Improvements shares with us some of their tips for planning home improvements. “When thinking about having any home improvements carried out, arrange for a free no obligation meeting to discuss your project and what you wish to achieve from the alterations. “It’s always a good idea to obtain details of all alterations in writing in the form of a contract so there can be no misunderstandings. In particular, I’d advise that you discuss the timescales that each alteration requires as these could affect your daily routines - e.g. electricity and water disconnections, or having to book time off work. Finally, ensure you allow plenty of time to think carefully about what changes you want to make - your new design needs to meet your exact requirements to fit in with your life.”
Once your home is up for sale and you start to think about the property you want to buy, don’t forget to involve all the family. Kids and teenagers have some great insights into what family frustrations there are and they are good at providing solutions that us adults would never have dreamed of, so make sure everyone is involved. That way
When thinking about having any home improvements carried out, arrange for a free no obligation meeting to discuss your project and what you wish to achieve from the alterations.
you all know what you are looking for and it will help them to realise they are ‘moving on.’ Moving the family is tough. So try to make the process as straightforward as possible – from experience it can be worth investing in a removal company’s packing service. Your home remains as it is up until the day before moving and as they do all the lifting you are not shattered when you arrive at your new home so you tend to unpack more quickly. Many even offer an unpacking service too - but for me, I like to put things where I want them to go from the start. Have you thought about part exchange if you’re trading up? And especially if you are buying a brand new home as you may get a good deal. Alternatively, if you have found ‘the house of your dreams’ and you can afford to do so, think about letting the one you currently own to release the capital to buy a new one and then you can sell when you are ready as holding chains together in the current recession can be a deal breaker. Before you make a decision either way, look at all your options, speak to builders for quotes and estate agents to see what property is available in your budget as well as how quickly they would expect your property to sell.
Good Luck!

SEAT Leon FR+
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups
I test drove the latest SEAT Leon recently and the 2.0 DSI FR+ DSG auto demo model certainly got my new year off to a flying start. Harnessing 208 horses the motor is capable of 145 mph and will sprint from 0-62 in 6.9 seconds. It feels every bit as fast as the figures suggest and the gear-change paddles on the steering wheel help with that ‘boy-racer’ thrill you sometimes need after a bad day at work. Throw the FR+ around corners – and it sticks to the road; dab the accelerator on the straight and you are pushed back in your seat as the car gets down on its haunches for a gratifying sprint. But drive the car sensibly and it behaves like any normal hatchback. It’s just handy to know that if you need a bit of ‘oomph’ to quickly overtake that irritating lorry then it’s there for you. The car has it all really – as long as you’re not expecting a large seven seat multi-purpose-vehicle. Try the SEAT Alhambra if you are! Inside, the driver’s seat is supportive and the steering wheel adjusts for a satisfying grip. The dials are clear and all the knobs and switches feel logically set out. Visibility is good and, in the rear, my children sat happily in their child-seats, which were fitted securely into the ISOFIX anchoring system. My wife found the front passenger area spacious and cosseting, although on the one occasion when she travelled in the rear, she commented that legroom was a little limited. And when it came
34
to loading, the decent-sized boot was large enough for a buggy and copious amounts of filled-to-thebrim supermarket shopping bags. As a family man, I found the car reassuring to be in. It doesn’t have a five-star Euro NCAP score, but it has an impressive enough four-star (Occupant and Child) result. The car feels well-made and there are driver and front passenger airbags as well as side and curtain airbags. The SEAT Leon is also equipped with traction control gadgetry to help keep it on the road and anti-lock brakes to ensure it scrubs off speed safely. The FR+ has 225/40 tyres on big 18 inch alloys, Bi-xenon headlights to help you see (and be seen) just that bit better and it has useful front parking sensors too. The SEAT Leon FR+ with the 6-speed DSG auto gearbox will set you back £23,100 on the road. Not the cheapest model, but nearly £3000 less than the top-of-the-range 155 mph Cupra R – and almost as exciting to drive.

Oscar’s Outings
www.t witter.com/oscaradventures With the weather now turning a little colder and the ground frosty we have stuck to more town based walks and last week headed off to Lincoln for the day - there are riverside walks, cafes to stop and have a snack at as well as plenty of shops for grabbing some bargains in the sales (or so I kept hearing all about!).
With Christmas out the way, the house finally seems to be back to normal - 3 walks a day at the right time. I love my routine and Christmas disrupts it all! This month we have been on lots of adventures but the most curious was heading over to ‘Sunny Hunny’ to see the whale that washed up earlier this month. It was huge, I have never seen anything so huge but by the time we got there it was somewhat smelly!
It’s that time of year for my cat sister’s and my own annual jabs. I really am not fond of injections and I am sure all the nurses at Riverside Vets will tell you some stories but I know how important they are so I better grin and bear it.
