Besides the chaos in space, FAMICTORY (Family+Factory) still got the value of maintaining family and the work. Thus, I attempted to rediscover the home-based factory lifestyle. I studied various kinds of home-factories since Taiwan’s industrial development, trying to change the factory-based family mode in the past, while resolving the conflict & contradiction within the overlap of family and factory. Connecting by leisure, social and family life, the factory space created unique type of production & living space in Taiwan. I named it as FAMICTORY- to live with factory!
In my impression, the atmosphere of the famictory is casual but with serious, cautious but with the nature.
The buildings are connected with big roof, the fractional spaces (In-between Spaces) become a storing and resting area.

買地增建時鄰棟間留下的空間， 常是生產以外的附屬機制： 員工的休憩、倉儲、 原物料堆放及卡車進貨等。

Bicycle Industry Groups in Central Taiwan
In the 1970s, Taiwanese Government set up the Export Processing Zone(EPZ) in Taichung. Moreover, there are many steel factories in Central Taiwan, so complicated bicycle industry could be booming. Headed by Dajia (Giant Bicycles) & Dacun (Merida Bikes) in which are near the port, bicycle exports are getting booming. Thus, with the environment changing, Taiwan’s bicycle industry is gradually entering a new stage. Not only the internal but the international competition, especially low price competition from China, bicycle industry groups still have energy to face the challenge!

In-between Space
JIUYUAN Industrial Company (Located in DACUN, Changhua) built 4 factory buildings step by step. Even if they are all connected together with iron sheet roofs, there are also many fractional space between the buildings. Naturally, many blurred events between life and production would occur in in-between space.
The main cores of the Famictory’s operation are flexible using, efficiency and cheap price, so I use the cranes, rolling doors and iron sheets, which are normal in factories, to response 4 kinds of spatial characteristics and more efficient and flexible using.
PRODUCTION The overhead crane is both used as a warehouse of storage and material carrying at working time, and the ground crane is used as a place, employees do hand-packaging there, where is located in the extended half-outdoor of the entrance. Also, southwind could blow into the factory through the opening ground crane.
PRODUCTION The ground crane connected with daily life, but the production should operate until midnight in the busy season.
LIFE The employees rest at second floor of the ground crane, so they could supervise the production operations immediately.
LIFE Employees’ resting spaces are related with owner’s house closely, and their circulations combine together.

PRODUCTION The ground crane still interacts with factory closely, but there are activities at the other side of the crane. LIFE At the other side, the ground crane combines the circulations with house’s roof space, and the crane interacts with ground floor’s activity space in holidays.

I chose whirlpool as opening research,I studied the growth & decline of whirlpool influenced by hole and reef. Furthermore, the opening is closely related to wind, then I started to think about the materials are influenced as whirlpool. I thought of SUGAR, which is related to temperature & humidity.

SUGARWALL CASTING The candywall is replaced by sugarwall casting, but the melted sugar can’t be bonded closely. Moreover, in the hot and humid space, the sugarwall melts and deposits on the bottom easily. Also, the hole is the weakest part of the sugarwall.

In the forest, sauna house would produce the humid & heat, and sugarwall could be destroyed by them. Thus, the sauna house would interact with the process of collapse by time.
A SECTION
The roof of sauna house is made of sugar, so it would melts and flows with the sugarwall.
B SECTION
The site is located on the leeward side of the JIUJIANGFENG (The winds of September in Hsinchu, it’s the strong and warm wind), so the warm wind could help the sauna oven when it blows into the sauna house. Furthermore, it melted the sugarwall which would flow down the slope and deposit in the sauna room and cool water pool. Finally, original building becomes the ruin and hide in the forest.
Put the bucket and walk out of the door...... Just few steps, to get water at the tap. Chating with neighbor.

WATER SYSTEM:
We hope to design a system to solve the water problems in the old town. The system unit will be connected to four old house, and one unit could provide about 30 people supply water. Each unit will use the heat that cook the food to heat the water inside the tank. The water tank has two part: hot zone and cold zone. The hot zone part will provide hot water to the public bathroom. The design of the water tank will be adjusted according to the importance of water, so the groups interact with each other because of the function of water.

The water system of the group is located along the terrain. It divergences into dendritic and connects the Old City together.
CONNECTION
The connection between two point can be divided into 2 parts: Tourism and Daily Life. The tourism part can connects the Old City gate and redifines the line from outside to the Leh Palace and nearby temples. The movement in daily life is brought back to the hillside and distinguished between tourism. And the public spaces redifined make connection of the community more stronger.

In the Leh Old City, we plan to put into 10 centers: Two of them will be B&B, and other centers will according of his environmental conditions be adjusted to different conditions and functions. When the absence of water, water restrictions will start from the top of the tank, and the entire system will be the final impact of water channel center. The top of the water is set to non-local residents or tourists, the middle layer of water is to provide each group unit, the bottom of water is to provide public water.

Keelung, a port city located in the northeast of Taiwan, which is also called “The City of Rain�. Because of northeast monsoon, more than half a year are rainy days. For the residents, raining is part of their lifestyle rather than inconvenience. Thus, when I started to design the maritime museum, in addition to considering the port, but also added the experience in rains.

On the way from train station to the site, there are many rain shelters: the bridge with roof, bus shelter, the space under the bridge and arcade are all half-outdoor space which can protect people from rain but provide people to feel raining.
I brought the kind of city experience into the museum, so I designed many courtyards surrounded by glass tubes. In this way, outdoor weather and exhibition experience will be more closely, then the museum which shows Keelung can connect with Keelung.
The right and the raining scene through into the exhibition area from the courtyards surrounded by glass tubes, which make museum links with outdoor.

Parklane, which is full of green, is a new open space in Taichung, coupled with the Eslite Bookstore and many shops, which attracts many residents and tourists to come. Especially in holidays, there are many activities like street performances, the adoption of stray dogs and small concert, which make Taichung more energetic. Thus, Tunghai University plans to establish a design center to hold exhibitions, lectures and conduct design classes. When I face the Parklane sandwiched between buildings, I want to offer a space which is closer to nature. Therefore, I find out “Nature” surrounded the site: just like sky and greenbelt, then I use windows to be filters to capture different angles of the nature, and I think over 3 kinds of perspectives, so I design the building to be polyhedron and the opening can capture the nature diredctly.

Through the windows, we can only watch unnatral views. In order to watch natral views, I used pool to reflect the sky reflection.
The blank between buildings, the sky upon the skyline and the green at Parklane are the only natral views in the city. The openings are the catchers to capture blue sky and green belt.
ATELIER TEKUTO INTERNSHIP TOKYO, JAPAN
Because of Workshop, we knew a Japanese architect - Yasuhiro Yamashita. He hold Atelier Tekuto in Tokyo, and the Atelier Tekuto focuses on the material research and using. For example, they invented structural glass bricks, aluminum and structural earth bricks to design buildings. Besides, the Atelier Tekuto is good at designing limit of the land size and limit of the cost. In summer of 2011, Hsuanya Kao and I interned in Atelier Tekuto during June to September. We participated in dierent house projects, mine is Takahashidai in Tokyo, and we both involved in earth bricks house.
