KAFFEE I S THE S ECOND LIFE OF D ESIGNERS
0 0/ SEMESTER REPORT Studying in KISD as an integrated design student, I have a totally new experience in both the design concept and analytical research. Apart from technical skills and practices, what I gain more from KISD is some new concept s o f what d esign is. S h o r t l y l i v i n g i n Co l o g n e fo r a fe w months, I experienced a new mode of learning from daily lives. It is not simply reading words from book, but to learn from our mates. Apart from the regular lectures and projects, I often go to sit for the public seminars with different topics. Those weekly seminars held by different professors or the professionals in the design industr y are really interesting to me. Not only focus on spatial design, but I have c h a n ce s to l e a r n s o me th i n g f ro m th e o th e r pe r s pe c ti ve of desi gn. WR IT ING LA B The writing lab introduces the wise use of KISD Space which is a good platforms for all KISDies to share and interact with their design. It is interesting to me that it encourages the interaction between students and internationals which is very different with the study environment in my hometown.
Different types of posts can be found in the SPACE just like the questionaires for project re s e a rc h , p ro gra m m e s n o t i ce s and the course report. This p lat fo r m let m e h ave a c l e a re r concept of how different parts of KISD run and what t h e o t h e r s t u d e n t s a re d o i n g. I am not ver y good at writing because of the bulky words and chaos in my head. But it will be ef fec tive fo r me if I can keep it u p.

I t i s i m p re s s i ve for me that I can know different platforms used by the students from different ma j o r. We c a n k n ow th e fo c u s and features by looking into the platforms that the other students used. And this let me know more apps and programmes that will be useful and inspirational for my wo r k s.
And it is really a good p r a c t i c e o f u s a g e i n S PA C E . And I can see the words and pictures from the others. I think it is important for all of us to keep learning from d i f fe re nt re s o u rces so that we can produce works to solve t h e p ro b l e m s e f fe c t i ve l y. A n d it can right start with the d a i l y f re e w r i ti ng habi t.
28
T EX TILE LA B It is the first year of running the tex ti l e l a b. An d i t i s a l re a d y a we l l equipped laboratory to me as a layman. The workshop introduced a lo t o f th e ba s i c tex ti l e s k i l l s w i th the usage of the textile machines which are really out of my box. Overlapping machine, sewing m a c h i n e a n d th e k n i tti n g ma c h i n e are the three major machines of t h e tex ti l e l a b. I t i s my f i r s t ti me to practise producing cloth with the tex ti l e ma c h i n e s.
29
We used a small piece of cloth for the practise of overlapping machine. It is for closing and ending the sewing of a cloth. Different from the handmade textile product, overlapping machine can finish the product in a more effective way with better v i s u a l e f fe c t. U p to 4 co l o r s c an be u s e d fo r th e pro ce s s.
We a l s o t r i e d t h e s e w i n g m a c h i n e which takes an impor tant role for the textile production. Despite its s m a l l s i ze a n d s i m p l e o u t l o o k , i t i s not easy to practice and operate. Setting the threads, linking the threads to the right position and operating the whole setting, it is n ot e a sy to co nt rol t h e m a c h in e to produce our wor k . I t needs time for getting used to the machine and practice. Before the introduction for these two machines, I prefer the handmade cloths or textile
work which is more easy than the mechanic stuff. But the produc tivit y of these t wo machines really impress me a lot with its speed and visual effec t. I n fac t, it is not as difficult as my imagination for using them. I think it will be absolutely helpful when we are going to create a large piece of textile design with innovative fo r m s.
30
31
The introduction for knitting is the most impressive par t for me. I n m y v i e w, i t i s q u i t e c o m m o n t o see the handmade knitting works with some complicated pattern that required high time -cost for the production. But the wise use of knitting machine surprise me because of its system and functions. It knits the cloth and s c a r f w i th h i g h s pe e d a n d a cc u rate methods which are extremely difficult for handmade. I am glad to have a try on the machines
although I cannot finish my product because of the technological problems. O v e r v i e w i n g t h e w h o l e w o r k s h o p, it is a worth-learning workshop that I have a big lesson on the textile knowledge and some basic skills on the textile machines. It attracts me a lot that it is not just simply producing cloths, but a l a rg e i n n ovati o n wi th the concer ns of pattern, forms and methods of pro d u c ti o n .

P H OTO LA B The photo workshop gave us a n i ntro d u c ti o n o f pro fe s s i o n a l photography techniques and basic skills for phone photos. Photo-taking is an important l e s s o n fo r e ve r y d e s i gn s tu d e nt as it is a main presentation for our design. A good series of photo helps present our wo r k s i n a n a e s t h e t i c way w i t h va r i o u s l o gi c s be h i n d.
The workshop started with the professional photography i ntro d u c ti o n . We h a d a pra c ti ce o taking the photo for a a l a m p. A l t h o u g h i t h a s a s i m p l e form, it is not easy to take a good photo that we have to be cocerned about the l i g h t i n g, d i re c t i o n , p ro j e c t i o n s and some other fac tors. We have tried different position of both the cameras and the l a m p i n o rd e r to f i g u re o u t t h e best structural composition for the picture. that, we also tried adjusting the position of the tripod with different height and angles. It is also impor tant for us to take a correct degree to view th e ma i n o bje c t so that we c an present our main character in th e be s t way. The tips for taking nice phone photo is the second part for the workshop. I think it is relly useful for a beginner of photography who knows anothing about the features of professional cameras. Good source of light, a clear background and a good position of the objects are the important factors for a good phone photo. We have tried to take the photos with only a white paper and the natural light. And I found it also stunning once we take the right angle with certain amount of natural light. It can be attractive and have its own style without anny editing if we can get used to this skills. Therefore, it is good to tr y this printing skill in a simple way. We use the common font with o complicated structures and brushstroke. E QU I PM E N T LA B We h a ve h a d a n i n t ro d u c t i o n for the photography and recording equippment. Getting some fundemental concepts for the usage of different devices, we were going to film a short video to practise using the equippments. At the very beginning, we have no ideas for the filming as we get nothing to be our main focus. We tried to look around the studio and fo u n d t h at we c a n o b t a i n t h e m a te r i a l s l o c a l l y a s we fo u n d
the shape of the equipments are interesting. We are going to present a zoo of equippment that each of them lives lively as an animal. This idea reminds me of the importance of imagination as a design student that we should be sensitive to the resources in the surrouding environment. Then we made i t i n a s to p mo ti o n v i d e o th at combined by the continuous s h o o ti n g s. Th i s to o k u s a l o n g period of time as we have to take the consideration
of the scenes coposition, l i g h t i n g, t r a n s i s t i o n s a n d t h e timing. It is effective that if we can present our creativity with a cl ea r a nd convincin g way.
Also, it is impor tant to be sensitive to the objects and t h e s u r ro u n d i n g e nv i ro n m e nt that everything can become equippments and materials of our design. We should figure about the specialities of items and wisely use them for our products. It is also an important factor for solving the problems when we are doing design. ME TA L W OR KS H OP This workshop started with the introduction of some equippments and measurement for the m e t a l l i c p ro d u c t i o n . We h ave seen some samples of the metal materials and some e qu i ppme nts fo r d raw i n g a n d measurements on metals. H o w e v e r, i t i s n e c c e s s a r y t o practise producing metal production but not only to get in touch with some basic introductions of tools and skills. Therefore, we then learn more about different
53
machines and equippments for metal products through the process of mak ing a metal hanger that is madeof metal sheets, panels and screw. It let me understand more different types of metalic materials and the relevant to o l s fo r th e m. I t i s i mp or tant that we should be familiar with different materials and the corresponding tools and equippments when we are doing handcrafting. 3d Modelling is a good pre s e ntati o n fo r o u r d e si gns.
54
The hanger consists of the following parts: two metal sheets for the rack/ one metal p a n e l fo r t h e co n n e c t i o n a n d fe w s c re w s fo r j o i n t s a n d t h e h a n g e r. To s t a r t w i t h , w e d i d the dimension calculation and measurements with the marks on our ow materials. It requires patiences and accuracy or it will affect the final outcome. Unlike other materials, we use a sharp metal pointer and triangles to do the marks instead of pencil which is not good to
55
be used on the metal materials. And then we used bending machines and p e t r o l e u m fo r fo l d i n g u p t h e L-shape of the metal rack and tracing the holes. All of these are the basic tools a n d e q u i p p m e n t s fo r m a k i n g d i f fe re n t m e t a l i c p ro d u c t i o n . Metals is good material that can create different types of production with its various forms. It is good that I have had an experience in trying the basical skills and major m a c h in es.-

PHYS IC A L CO M P U T E R L AB It is a 2-days workshop started with the basic modelling introduction. I think 3d modelling is a ver y important skills for all design students in different majors. And this workshop teach us some basic ad important skills for it including the measurements and connection for different materials. We tried to make cubes with different materials including the paper, cardboard and wooden stick. This practice let me know the importance of wisely
57
using the features and strength of different materials. Paper is easy for crafting curve but it can l o o s e e a s i l y. A n d w e h a v e t o be careful with the dimension ca lc u lat io n wit h th e mate r i a l s in different thick ness. Also, w e h a v e t o t h i n k o f d i f fe r e n t glues and connection types for different materials. It is i m p o r t a n t fo r u s to k n ow t h e materials features and the ways to use them wisely so t h at we ca n p rese nt o u r wo r k p hysic a lly.

P HYS I C AL COM P U TE R LA B On the next day, we had have an introduction of basic programming and functions. It is totallay a new field for me that I am not good at computing and calculation logics. The tutor gave us a brief tutorial on a programming app ARDUNO which is very user-friendly and easy for beginners. We tried to link up the ARDUNO programming and the base panel with different linkage of cables. We tr ied to light up the LED bulbs and set a controller for adjusting the
speed of the bulbs. These progress required patience and accuracy for the piles of the codes programming as even a differennce in the l e t t e r o r d i g i t s c a n b re a k t h e whole series of programme that leads to the failure of the wor k . Apar t from the graphics design and 3d-modelling, this introduction also reminded me of the importance of digital media. It is an advanced way to present our work in a more effect way at both aestheticity and i n n ovati o n . I th i n k I s h o u l d
spend some time on learning this skills that can help me to visualize my ideas and concepts in various ways. Webpage design and apps programming are also the popular media among d i f fe re nt u s e r s.
60
After the basic introduction of the computing programme, we star ted to make use of it in the production of robot. We a re a s k e d to bu i l d a ro bo t w i th mo ti o n th at o pe rate d by t h e e n g i n e o f A R D U N O. I t i s the first time I built a robot with different programmes. I n th i s ta s k , s o me o f u s fo c u s o n d o i n g t h e co d e p ro gra m m i n g that generates the motions o f t h e r o b o t . H o w e v e r, a s I was not get used to this practice, I did the modelling of the robots with the other groupmates. Throughout the
61
process of building the r o b o t b o d y, w e h a d t h o u g h t of different plans for the outlook of the body design and the material usage with detailed calculation. And we also realized the impor tance of the combination of the body and the engines. It re q u i re d g o o d d e s i g n fo r t h e body with specific openings a n d c o n n e c t i o n s. S o t h a t t h e engine can be installed stably but still can be adjusted manually. This workshop actually helps me reflect on th e 3 d mo d e l l i n g s k i l l s.
62
WOOD W OR KS H OP The first par t of the wor kshop is the training for using basic machines for wooden craftmenship. Wood is a c o m m o n m a t e r i a l fo r m a k i n g 3d model that it is easily controlled. What we should practise is how to use the re l e va nt ma c h i n e s fo r c u tti n g the wood in different forms and the polish. We tried to make a circular wood plane by using the bendsaw m a c h i n e a n d t h e s a n d e r. But it is not easy to cut the c u r v y l i n e s s mo o th l y w i th th e be n d s aw th at i t n e e d to be
63
done calmly and stably. This also makes me realize the impor tance of safet y. Although these machines can help us to do wooden craf tsmanship more e f fe c t i ve l y, t h e k n i fe a n d t h e sander are really so sharp that injuries maybe resulted in for any careless mistakes. But still, this introduction was really attractive to me that those tools and equippments enable me to do my ow n wo o d wor k i n a more e f fe c ti ve way.
64
In the second part of the workshop, each of us was going to make a small wooden chair model in the scale of 1:10. Therefore, to start with, I was thinking of a good form of the chairs that can be good for wooden craftsmanship and convenient for the users. Therefore, I would like to make a chair in the form of rectangular box with the intersecting planes with openings. I think these i n te r s e c t i n g p l a n e s c a n m a k e good uses of spaces for the users to put their own
65
belongings. As a beginner of wo o d c re a f t s m a n s h i p, I t h i n k i t i s be tte r for me to wor k on t h e d e s i gn wo r k s t ra i g h t l i n e s that it requires practices and mature skills for the curvy wood productions. But still I enjoyed a lot in making this wood work in both the drafting and the crafting process. And I am really happy that I use my wood work at home as Pens holder and a small cabinet for storage. This workshop encourages me to make my i ma gi n ati o n s come tr ue.

CO LO G NE GAT E To s t a r t w i t h , I c h o s e t h e Cologne Gate as the site to study because of its histor ical and cultural value. Being a symbol of a part of the Cologne city ring, each of the gate and archway takes different roles and functions va r io us pro gra mmes fro m t h e past to the present. In the ancient time, the gate acted as an access to the city from its boundaries. Up to date, the boundaries between different cities are blurred due to the modernization. City gates act as landmarks
special features of cologne urban planning. Unlike Dom which is standing as an unique statue at the centre of the city with the grand gothic features, Cologne city gates present the local feature s with it s fu n c t io n a s a city gate or a large piazza at p re se nt.

and provide a large public area for citizens' gathering despite their old gothic structure. The coexistence of traditional architecture and modernized urban is i n t e re s t i n g t o m e. To m e, t h e ways of people treating the cit y ' h isto r ic a l site s c a n be a n i m p l i c a t i o n o f c i t y i d e n t i t y. It reveals how the people of a city value their nation and the long stor y behind. Among the various landmarks in the cit y, I chose cologne gate instead of the DOM because of the city ringe, one of the

COLOG N E G ATE G OTH IC S T YLE Therefore, I tried to obser ve different small parts of a c o l o g n e g a t e. B re a k i n g d o w n the gate from an archway to a s m a l l d e t a i l s o f w i n d ow frames, I tried to figure out the interaction between the Cologne gate with the surrounding environment and the people. Firstly, only the main archway is remained til now due to the changes of urban planning. This gate consists of a symmetrical archway based on the traditional gothic a rc h i te c tu ra l fe atu re s s ta r te d
in the mideval time. Most of the users pass through the archway while little of them stay for a longer pe r i o d o f ti me a s a wa nderer. Second, I found the details of the cologne gate very delicated with oranmental d e ta i l s. B u i l d i n g o n th e roc k y basement, elegant details including the postbox with Cupid statue and the curvy lines of the small gate at ba c k ya rd c a n be fo u n d.
72
73
COLOG N E G ATE As the existing cologne gates are only the remained archway of the citywall that a large part of the city wall/ Cologne ring is removed, I tried reveal it original form. Getting the image of the Cologne wall in different time is important so that I can get some association a n d v i s u a l i n fo r m at i o n to g e t closer to the actual situation at th at ti me. H owe ve r, I th i n k I s h o u l d re a d m o re a b o u t t h e history about the Cologne gate and how it related to the present urban planning of
Cologne. But at least, tr ying to reveal the image of Cologne gate in the past, th i s pro ce s s e n a bl e me to see the changes of circulation flow and the surrounding environment; from the marching of soldiers getting access to the city to the crowds of citizens gathering for markets or activities. This change also implies the change of the gate function from a simply access or military rings to a public s pa ce s.
74
75
76
COLOG N E G ATE S ITE A N A LYS IS Apart from the architectural features of the gate, what more impor tant is the actual situation and surrounding environment around the site. Therefore, I studied the landuse distribution around the Cologne gate in Chlodwigplatz which is a part of the city centre but n o t th e bu s i e s t o n e. K n ow i n g different functions and landuse around the gate, I can k now more about how the pe o pl e i nte ra c t w i th th e g ate n owa d ays a s t h e f u n c t i o n s o f th e g ate c h a n g e d.
77
High circulation flow with mobility can be found because of the nearby traffic intersections. It results in d i f fe re nt s p at i a l a r ra n g e m e nt around the gate. Passive spaces can be found in the large public zone in front of the gate that provides a place of gather ing. And buffer zones can be found as the transition b e t we e n d i f fe r e n t l a n d u s e i n the surroundings. The gate acts as a central landmark in Chlodwigplatz that provide a meeting point, public area or even transition of various s pa ce s.
78
Various types of landuse can be found around this d i s tr i c t w h i c h i s a pa r t o f th e city centre. At the day time, commercial landuse take a large occupation in which various storers, restaurants and kiosk are involved. And the little part of the residential place also take a part at the night time. The s u r ro u n d i n g a re a s o f Co l o gn e provide a large public area for the citizens' leisure or recreational use in the form o f pa r k s o r s e a s o n a l ma r k e t.

Apart from the private cars and foot passengers, there are two main sources of transportations which bring a l a rg e a mo u nt o f c i rc ualti on. And the Ubahn station in East also provide a transfer of people to come and leave th i s d i s tr i c t.
TR ANSPOR TATION
The gate at chlodwigplatz i s a n i n t e r s e c t i o n . Tw o m a i n circulational can be found among the gate from the Northern and eastern part. Because of the bus station in North(and south) and the Ubahn station in East, there are a round 40 peo ple a r r ivin g at Chlodwigplatz and pass through the zones around the Cologne gate which acts as a landmark or centre of Chlodwigplatz. Pedestrians will go into different direction after passing through this main part of ch l o dwigplatz.
For the relevant time of circulation, people staying in the public area for the longest time. Elderly and housewives are commonly found among the group who are having lesiure activities within this zones. for the seasonal market, the amount o f in co m ers in c rea se s a n d th e time of people staying does so. COLOG NE PUBLI C T R A NP OR TS St ar tin g f ro m t he st ruc t ure o f Cologne urban planning, Im interested in how those zones are connected into a whole. This makes me think of the p u b l i c t ra n s p o r t at i o n s ys te m . Apart from the private ve h i c l e s, U - b a h n , S - b a h n a n d bus are the most common transportation in the city (despite its delay ever yday). But at th e sa me time, r ides
are also easily found. It is impressive as I seldom see bicycle rental stations although there are lot of cycling people. Thinking of the relationships between the small rides and giant t ra n sp o r t at io n s. I fo u n d t h e m complementar y to each other. I therefore studied and map out those transpor tations and releva nt sites.

After collecting the data about the Cologne urban planning and the landuse setting in which the transportation system acts as the connection, we tried to present it in an image through different visual elements. Using different lines and patterns, we intend to show the phenomenon of the cologne transportation network concentrating at the city centre and extending to the surburb concentrically with the re d u c i n g i nte r va l s.
H owe ve r, we fo u n d i t is not effective enough to present the whole transportation system w i t h i t s c m p l e x i t y. A p a r t from the horizontal spacial factors, it is also because of the variations a m o n g t i m e, e nv i ro n m e n t and people. We then tried to study about the relationship between time and the mobility of transport. And it is an interesting issue that the KVB in Cologne is a controversial topic that I ex pe r i e n e everday.

Despite the strong KVB/VRS network a m o n g t h e c i t y, t h e r e a r e still many places cannot reach the point with transportation, especially the regional site and suburb. In our mind, it will be better if we can link up those points and ex te n d th e w h o l e n et wor k w i th a ti g hte r co n n ec ti on. Therefore, we record the departure times and d u rati o n o f th e tra ins and tra ms fo r e a c h s tati on.

TIM E & S PACE S OF TR A N S P OR TATION From our mapping, we found that the most effective section of transports concentrates at the city centre in which at least 6 lines are connected. It reduces time changing lines so the passengers can reach t h e d e s t i n a t i o n d i re c t l y. However, due to the radiographical structure o f co l o gn e t ra n s p o r t a t i o n n e t wo r k , th e zo n e o u ts i d e the innerstadt are not connected as tight as th o s e i n th e c i t y ce ntre,
Wh e n th e pa s s e n g e r s plan to go to Frechen from We i d e n w e s t , c y c l i n g w i l l be double faster than taking the trams that t ra m c h a n g e s a re n e e d e d. We are invetigating the spaces and time among these two transpor tation and to map out their relationship in order to have an over view for the whole mobilit y net wor k in Co l o gn e.

97
IN F O G R A P H ICS F OR MA P P IN G TIM E & S PACE S In order to depict the time -spatial relationship among the different t ra n s p o r t at i o n s c l e a r l y, we have different tests for using various ytpes of graphic elements and effects in order to visualize our studies. The different length a n d t h i c k n e s s o f lines imply the time intervals between each transportation unit. In order to protrude the
t i m e - s p a t i a l r e l a t i o n s h i p, we tried to use simple forms of point and color for the transportation units so that the time intervals stand out more effec tively. However, we ar still thinking of the whole layout which presents the complete Cologne transportation network in a clear and obvious way which is a bl e to s h ow th e f a c tor of ti me.
98
MAPPING THE ELASTIC MOBILITY Due to the time of different transportation that takes, the city shrinks and extends. We can see the city in a different way in an elastic concept. No longer the distance, but the time. Our outcome presents the space of Cologne in terms of time. Unlike the traditional map with the focus of physical dimension of space, we tend to present the space
99
through the measurement of time with different mobility within the city. Various speed and travelling time are resulted due to the different transportation. Therefore an obvious contrast can be found in the mapping scale. It presents the city in a flexible way in which the time units are the main informations for the audiences.

Investigating the look beyond the pass expression, in this course, we figure out the architectural features during different period of time and how they are influenced and bring impact the society at that time. It is not only about the noble decorative ornaments and the simple forms, but also we see the transformation of the user's demand and the environmental resources. Through this course, I have know more about the architectural construction, architecture-cultural relationship and some design concepts and principles. To s t a r t w i t h , t h e t re n d o f d e s i g n c h a n g e d f ro m c o m p l e x i t y to minimalist style. In the classical period, both the p ro d u c t s a n d a rc h i te c t u re a re d e s i gn e d c u r v y a n d f i g u rat i ve c h a r a c t e r s w h i c h s y m b o l i z e o n e ' s i d e n t i t y. S o m e d e p i c t i v e scenes can also be found that revealed the situation at that time. But when it comes to the contemporar y design, we found the spatial arrangements impor tant for both the pro gra mme s a n d th e fo r ms o f d e s i gn . Si mpl e l i nes and for ms are wisely used in Scandinavian and Minimalisim design w i t h h a ve h i g h q u a l i t y o f c o m p l e x i t y. A n d t h e i r fe a t u re s also inspire me to think deep of the reason behind and it is ever y designer should think of the aims of creating. History and culture are always the interactive elements w h e n c re at i n g a d e s i gn b e c a u s e t h e re ve a l e d h u m a n' s l i v i n g s t a n d a rd. W h e n t a l k s t o d e s i g n , t h e c u l t u re o f a s o c i e t y i s a key of it. Through out this course, I see the impor tance of wo r l d h i s to r y i nvo l ve d i n t h e f i e l d o f d e s i gn a n d a e s t h e t i c s. In the medieval time, design features in elegant tones and for ms help one's identit y standout. For the simple for ms and clear lines from Nordic scandinavian and modern p e r i o d, w h i c h a re to t a l l y d i f fe re nt f ro m t h e c l a s s i c a l d e s i gn . And those difference among difference reminds me of the histor y of that period. Design is life, it reflects the needs of people and how the people view the world by creating. From obser ving the design features of different times, I recognized the importance of getting the story behind. Ever y little thing metters. From the transition between ornamental classical time to the minimalism and simplicity of the contemporary design, this big changes underlines th e d e ma n d o f ma s s pro d u c ti o n a n d h i g h e f f i c i enc y for wor k . I n m y v i e w, i t i s o n e o f t h e r e s u l t o f t h e w a r a n d t h e s t a r t of globalization. I appreciate a lot about his design principles about how to define a good design from the aspect of users and also the functions of a product. It helps me alert of the relationship between u s e r s, d e s i gn e r a n d a p ro d u c t d e s i gn . I t i s u n avo i d a b l e t h a t we should pay attention to the aesthetic details when we produce. But Aesthetic doesnt only mean a physical look b u t a l s o h o w b e n e f i c i a l i t i s. Le a r n i n g t h e o r i e s f r o m d e s i g n master can be beneficial for sure, but at the same time it c a n be a doube - e dg ed sword. I n my view, d esign is a ll a bo u t thinking for life. Sometime, too much theories can bring us limitation that results in the lack of sensitive mind. But learning all of these histories and principles, it helps build a knowledge base and enrich our content before we make d e s i g n . Ta c k l i n g t h e f e a t u r e s o f a c u l t u r e , w e c a n f i n d o u t the problems and create design by making solutions. It is because the histor y always teach us life about people. Shortly conclude, this course is effective to help build a design data base for students and get our horizons boardened. CH A IR S & CON CE P TS We star t the first task with researches on various chairs and try to dig deeper about the concept and stories behind as we can. At the beginning, I seek for the chair which I have taken seat because real experience is important for figuring out the usage of a design. The"FENCELESS" is a work by a PolyU graduate who turns a common fence into a c h a i r. I n my v i e w, t h i s i d e a is interesting that it gives a s e co n d me a n i n g ( f u n c ti o n ) fo r the fences which only have asimply standing structure a n d th e f u n c ti o n a s a ba r r i e r.
Being blended according to the urgonomic design, this fence becomes a multifunctional structure that provides a seat. This idea of a wisely using a feature of a material is good for creating multi-functional products. Concepts is a controversal idea to me because of its virtuality and immaterial feature. It let me reflect for my intention of design. Sometimes a purpose pops up in a good design, but I th i n k a pu r po s e i s n o t a must fo r a g o o d d e s i gn .

CH A IR S & CON CE P TS Then, I tried to seek for the deisgn with specific principles that Im interested i n . Th ro u g h o u t th e co u ntl e s s results, I mainly focus on those with simple and clear structure. "Less But more" is an inspiring concept by Dieter Ram. I looked into t h e c o n t r a s t b e t we e n a g o o d function of seat and an i n c o m p l e t e d s t r u c t u r e / fo r m . S o m e t i m e s, I t h i n k " c o n c e p t " is just like box limiting our creativity. In the past, I always tr ied to give a concept o r me a n i n g to my pro d u c t
before I make it works. But actually, what more important is that I should figure out what the users or the environment require. Ta c k l i n g t h e s e f e a t u r e s o u t is the way of having good concept but not simply creating something looks i n n ovati ve.
136
P OLA R IT Y MA P Fo r th e s e co n d d ay, we ta l k e d about the how content related to context in a concept of design. Various criterias can be found for a content and target users including time, visual, materials and the sense. B o t h t h e m a te r i a l a n d v i r t u a l e l e me nts c a n br i n g i mpa c t to an ideas. In order to figure t h i s o u t , we t r i e d t o f i n d o u t an image of a chair through the Polarity map which presents the correlation and transition of a design's fe atu re.
137
In this task, I have thought a lot about the meaning of a word and the slight difference between each synoyms. I take void for my chair which implies the emptiness and unfinishment. The spatial quality and the contrast between sharp structure and blurred boundaries is my focus. H owe ve r, I fo u n d i t to o n a i ve that I didnt study any about its concept behind. Through this task, we understand how to create a communication by using the content and context wisely to let the concept speak for itself. We are not doing the advertisement or the proposal of a design, but to speak for it as a first-person narrative. Apart from its design features, we should dig deeper for its cultural values and how it interact with time and people as a pro d u c t.

D u r i n g th i s pro ce s s, th e mo s t difficult part is the decision for the polarit y. Although it is effective to map the shoes according to their functions, images and the relevant occasion, these criterias may not be able to extend the discussion to the story behind of the concept. Why to use this form and pattern? Why to pick this target users? It is something about we want to compare the difference between the newton shoes users and the s n e a k e r s l o ve r s, a n d a l s o t h e d e s i gn e r s, to o.

LEGO is a wellknown toy brand which is famous among people in different ages. But the common point is that it makes people build and create to g e t he r. We t h in k t h is concept of bringing people together is interactive with the g athe r ing tra d t io n d u r in g christmas which is a cheerful and war m moment. Therefore,
we depict an image which shows the difference bet ween the dull ordinary town and a virtual playground with LEGOs. H owever, what I lea r n fro m O S is t h e d esign a im fo r c re ati n g an open design culture. It should be experimental with different levels of progress so that we can take the pros and cons to create the best solution.
