Off the Perth’s first vegan fish and chip shop Nuthin Fyshy opens in Leederville, Australia

ylie Pogorzelski and Erin O’Brien opened the doors to Nuthin Fyshy in the middle of Leederville recently and already they are the talk of social media. While the menu features exactly what you would expect from your classic takeaway shop — fisherman’s baskets, juicy burgers and golden chips — there’s not a scrap of real meat to be seen. Instead, chef O’Brien uses products made from plant protein, soy and konjac to recreate the flavour and texture of seafood and also makes her own vegan fetta, tartare and mayonnaise. Pogorzelski — who is coincidentally the daughter of a fisherman — had the idea for Nuthin Fyshy last year and encouraged long-time friend O’Brien to pack up her life in Melbourne and move west for the venture. “Perth is a fish and chip town, we love our fish in WA,” Pogorzelski says. “We are the only vegan fish and chip shop in Australia right now. There was one in Sydney but then it closed down. “We want to show you can still enjoy absolutely beautiful fish and chips as a vegan. The substitute has to be as good as the real product because we want to change hearts and minds.” O’Brien painstakingly researched meat alternatives to find dupes for the real thing. Everything from the fish to the crab sticks, prawns, squid and burger patties has its own unique flavour. “A lot of people think, if you’re vegan why would you
