Obtaining a Marriage License Though the steps and requirements needed to get a marriage license might feel overwhelming, it’s actually fairly simple. Here’s an overview of what you need to know, but keep in mind that, depending on which state and county you get married in, there might be some different requirements, so check with the county clerk beforehand. Planning a destination wedding in Florida? We’ve got you covered, too!

Who May Apply? Unmarried people who are at least 18 years of age (or emancipated) and are not blood relatives can apply for a marriage license. If at least one applicant is a resident of Georgia, then you can get a license from any county in the state. If neither applicant is a Georgia resident, then you must get your license from the county where the ceremony is being held.
Who May Apply? Unmarried people who are at least 18 years old and are not blood relatives. In some cases, a person under the age of 18 can get a marriage license; check with the county clerk for the regulations and requirements.
What to Provide Both partners must be present at the time of application and will need to bring documentation that proves they are of age. Accepted documents include: birth certificate, driver’s license, passport or armed forces identification card. If either party was divorced or widowed, you may need to provide a divorce decree or the date of the former spouse’s death. Check with the county clerk for requirements.
What to Provide When applying, each person must bring one form of identification, which can include: driver’s license, state ID card or valid passport. Both people will also need to provide their social security numbers (the physical card won’t be needed). Before you go, contact your county clerk to verify which documents they accept, as the requirements may differ. If either party is divorced, they must provide the official date the divorce was granted. If your previous marriage ended due to annulment or death of your previous spouse, you would need to write that on the application.
Cost A marriage license fee differs depending on the county and ranges from $16 to $76. Each county offers a discount for completing a premarital education course. Check with your local probate court for restrictions on payment.
Cost The license fee ranges from $32.50 to $93.50, depending on whether you’ve completed the Florida pre-marital course. Proof of course completion must be provided.
Waiting Period/Expiration of License Georgia doesn’t have a waiting period before the license can be used. In some counties the license doesn’t expire, but in others the license expires after six months. Also, verify how many days you have to return the license for filing. In Fulton County, for example, the marriage license should be returned within 30 days.
Waiting Period/Expiration of License As a Florida resident getting married in Florida, there’s a threeday waiting period to get your license, and the ceremony must be performed prior to the 60-day expiration. If you’ve completed a Florida pre-marital course, the waiting period is waived.

inding your dream wedding dress can feel daunting, regardless of your size or body shape. After all, this will be the dress you want to remember as nothing less than perfect. For petite brides, there is the challenge of finding a dress that can be shortened and frustration of finding the right proportions, and for curvy brides, navigating the high-fashion world of wedding gowns can feel downright impossible. We understand the apprehension that often accompanies shopping for a bridal gown, but we also believe every woman should feel empowered when shopping for her big day. The key is having the right mindset, confidence and support system to overcome any barriers to finding your dream dress.
SIZING Let’s start with one of the toughest parts of shopping for a wedding dress — the sizing. When you buy a pair of jeans or a dress off the rack at a run-of-the-mill clothing store, chances are good that the manufacturer employs vanity sizing. To make matters more complicated, stores all use their own sizing systems, so it’s entirely possible to wear a size 10, 12 and 14 in jeans that come from three different stores and brands. Your waist obviously doesn’t change from store to store, but rather the number assigned to your clothes has little correlation to the actual measurements of the garments.

We’ve got many incredible bridal boutiques in this issue who offer a range of specialties and services. Some brides may opt for a shop that carries a wide variety of plus sizes in stock, while others may be looking for expert in-house alterations that will be able to accommodate, say, a long or short torso.
One of the most important considerations is who to invite along. It’s best to go with at least one other person who can give feedback and make the experience feel more special. One strategy for success is to create a support squad who will give a boost of confidence and an honest opinion without any underhanded or judgmental comments. Many brides choose a close friend, parent or family member as their plus-one. Alternatively, other brides find strength in numbers. Regardless of the number of supporters invited, make sure each person included brings only good vibes — invite those people you know will build you up and make sure you feel beautiful.

Because of this, no matter what your American size, you should expect your wedding dress to be one to two sizes (or more) larger than your usual size. For brides who have a difficult relationship with their American size number, having to go up in number can sometimes feel soul-crushing. Brides who struggle with this have different options for dealing with the emotional impact of their wedding dress size. Some choose to mentally prepare themselves for the size to be bigger, acknowledging the fact that wedding dress sizing runs small and, therefore, accepting the size of the dress as a reality that doesn’t affect how they look or feel. Another option is to simply choose not to know which size dress is being ordered for you. The sales associate can take your measurements and order a dress size based on those measurements, but you don’t have to

Alternatively, if a tall bride falls in love with a dress that does not offer the option of extra fabric, a skilled tailor can often find creative ways to add length with a subtle lace panel or new layers.
FOR PETITE BRIDES For brides who are shorter than five feet, four inches, it can be helpful to buy a gown that is cut for their shorter stature. Many brands offer a petite version of their dresses, and in this case, it usually means that the entire dress is scaled down proportionally for shorter frames, not just that the skirt is shortened. However, the challenge for shorter brides is that salons rarely carry petite sizes in stock, so the petite bride is left to try on a gown that is too long overall and hope that the problem will be solved by ordering the petite version. This can occasionally lead to some fairly extensive alterations when the dress arrives, so plan accordingly.
FOR ATHLETIC-BUILD BRIDES Wedding gowns are generally designed with the classic dress-form mold in mind — think curves in the bust and hips, and a narrowing at the waist. Brides with an athletic build who do not have these pronounced curves may struggle to find a wedding gown cut for their straighter proportions. One trick is to look for gowns in a fabric with a little stretch that will accommodate different shapes. For athletic-build brides who have a dream of a specific fabric or style of gown but are having trouble finding the right fit, a custom design may be the best option, as the designer can tailor everything to the bride’s specific measurements.

Go into this chapter with an open mind to ensure that you are giving yourself every opportunity to fall in love. For brides planning to lose weight before the wedding day, it can be tempting to put off dress shopping until you drop a few pounds, no matter your starting size. However, don’t wait too long! Most wedding dresses take at least eight months to arrive, and alterations will then require another one to two months, so plan accordingly. It is advisable to buy a dress that fits your current size and not a future goal that you set. Don’t put extra pressure on yourself to squeeze into a dress that is two sizes too small. Planning a wedding can be stressful enough, so why add the stress of weight loss into the mix? Your partner loves you exactly as you are. Never let your beauty be defined by a number.

o one wants a blemish or dried-out hair on their wedding day. You need that gorgeous newlywed glow! Follow these simple steps to achieve a radiant complexion, fabulous hair and a dazzling wedding day look.
FACE THE FACTS If you really want to clear up any skin blemishes in time for your big day, it’s best to consult a dermatologist at least six months before your wedding. They’ll be able to give you the best advice on what to do — and what not to do — to prep your skin. A great esthetician will also be able to recommend the ideal facial treatments for you. We suggest getting a few
facials before the day-of, but be sure to schedule your last one at least two weeks before the wedding. TIP: The simplest way to improve your skin is to drink tons of water. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference getting your eight, eight-ounce glasses of water per day will make.
BOLD BROWS If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the eyebrows are your curtains. Make sure they are neat and tidy. Waxing is great for fine hair, because it gets all those tiny little spots you can hardly see. It can be a bit intense for sensitive skin,

PERFECT PEARLY WHITES Everyone wants gorgeous, white teeth in pictures. Start with regular cleanings at your dentist. Specific whitening toothpastes and mouthwashes are a also a good starting point. Strips or gel can be harsh on sensitive teeth but are usually more effective. If you’re okay with a splurge, ask your dentist about professional whitening options. TIP: If you have your teeth professionally whitened, we recommend having the process done a few months in advance, then supplementing with less intense whitening agents as necessary.
HAIR CARE Even if you’re growing your hair out, regular cuts are a must. Get rid of those split ends. While you’re at the salon, talk with your stylist about your hair type and the look you’d like to have on your wedding day. They can give you tips on the best products to use to enhance your natural shine and make sure your locks look luscious when the big day rolls around. TIP: To avoid those pesky, wispy, tiny hairs, avoid daily washing and heated styling products. If you’re too far gone, try a deep conditioning treatment about a month before your big day.

A lot of venues now offer rectangle or square tables, and this opens up so many possibilities for how to arrange your space! Set rectangular tables up endto-end for long banquet or “feasting” tables, or put two tables together by their long side to form a big square. An alternative table arrangement can even help you create seating pods for family groups to encourage social distancing in a creative way. Do you want everyone to feel like they’re close to the action? Set all of your tables along the edge of the dance floor by making L-shapes or a U-shape so that nobody has to be relegated to the back corner of the room. Rectangular table arrangements
also allow for unique centerpieces and décor, like long table runners or statement candles. Or you can even talk to your florist about featuring hanging florals or swagging fabric above the tables for a whimsical effect. Don’t let your imagination stop with the tables. You can even re-think the typical banquet chairs as well. Check with your venue or rental company about different options — depending on your aesthetic, you may like wooden chiavari chairs, modern acrylic or vintage metal. ight now your mind is swirling with all the unique things you want to pack into your wedding day. Whether they envision something more traditional than you’d like or something built from their own imaginations, they need to know that you and your partner make the final decisions. Being direct will keep you from being pushed around, but be kind. Remember that they just want the best for you, and any “help” they offer is out of love.

Formulating a solid guest list early in the process removes a significant amount of stress. Knowing how many people may attend your wedding makes it so much easier to design nearly every other detail. Your guest list can help determine how many tables and centerpieces you need, what size cake you want, how large your dance floor should be and what your budget is per plate. Getting the logistics down early saves a lot of time — and many headaches — in the long run.
HIRING THE AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE FAMILY Just because a family member owns a fancy camera, doesn’t mean they know how to use a fancy camera. Professionals have taken classes and honed their professional skills, and it’s in your best interest to hire one. Look at several photographers’ portfolios before you make a choice. Good framing and impeccable focus are one thing. Style is another. When you’re making a decision, look for someone whose style suits what you envision for your wedding. Whimsical, classic or bold, a portfolio is the best indication of what to expect on your big day. Also, keep in mind that it’s easier to boss around a hired stranger than your sweet uncle who changed your diapers and fed you when your parents wanted a date night.
WHO’S THAT LADY? It’s your day, and you have professionals lined up for your hair and makeup. The inclination is to go super glam and enjoy your transformation into a supermodel, but remember who your partner fell in love with and make sure that person is the one getting married. Unless it’s your daily style, you’ll look totally different when you opt for eyes smokier than the pits of hell or bright lipstick. When you get those professionally taken photos back and wonder who your spouse is dancing with, you may regret your decision. Natural hues that highlight rather than disguise your charms will keep your style yours with all the glam you need.
DON’T WEAR THE LAMPSHADE AT YOUR OWN PARTY You’ve been lost in a storm of planning, and the lead-up to this soirée has been only one stressful item after another on your already full plate. It’s easy to see the reception as the first time you really get to let loose and have a couple of cocktails. Go ahead. Have one. Have two. Then maybe slow down around three or four. Getting lit on your wedding day is not the ladylike or gentlemanly thing to do, and believe us, your guests will love reminding you about that time you drunkenly collapsed onto your own wedding cake. You’ve been preparing for this night for several months (or since you saw “The Sound of Music” when you were seven and immediately began making lists and diagrams). To celebrate the success of pulling it off, you should soberly swim in the sea of “oohs” and “aahs” and look around at the amazing show you’ve created. Your most vivid memory shouldn’t be the venue’s bathroom floor.
MAKE SURE IT’S A HAPPILY EVER AFTER In movies, the deliriously happy couple is whisked off at the end of the party to their honeymoon while their guests wave wistfully and dab at tears. In reality, the deliriously happy couple is also deliriously exhausted and burntout. They may not have spent much time with each other since they said their vows, and they may (if they didn’t take our earlier advice) be slightly inebriated. Starting your honeymoon the night of or morning after your wedding may seem like a romantic whirlwind of adventure, but let us tell you what’s not romantic: airport security. You don’t want to stand in that line, get frisked and then propel 33,000 feet into the air while there’s still tequila settling in your stomach and blisters on your danceworn feet. Besides, what’s the point of reserving an oceanside suite if you sleep through the first 48 hours of it? Spend a day or two at home or at a nearby hotel lavishing in the love you now legally share before tackling anything strenuous like trotting the
globe. Sleep off the pre-wedding anxiety, during-wedding adrenaline and after-wedding lushness. Your body and mental state will thank you for being refreshed and ready to enjoy your welldeserved time away.
HIRING A WEDDING PLANNER A wedding is really a complicated, full-scale party that requires hundreds of decisions and dozens of external vendors working together to pull off one fabulous event. Most of us don’t have the time, energy or expertise to put together a wedding completely on our own. But don’t despair, that’s when wedding planners enter to save the day. When you hire a wedding planner, you are hiring someone to oversee all the details of your big day so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the party. Something like the electricity hookup for the catering staff is the last thing you need to think about before walking down the aisle to marry the love of your life. Do yourself a favor and take some of the wedding stress off yourself by hiring a professional. Besides, due to the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus public health crisis, and its resulting restrictions and safety precautions, event planning just got that much more difficult. Wedding planners have the knowledge and experience to build flexibility into contracts while pivoting and adjusting strategy with your vendors if an unforeseen circumstance impacts your big day in any way.
TIERS OF SERVICE Wedding planners generally offer different tiers of service, priced according to the amount of time involved and services offered in each category. Before hiring a wedding planner, you and your partner should decide how much of your budget you’re willing to spend, and how much help you truly need. Once you understand the volume of work you’re able to take on and how much you need or want to outsource, you can get to work finding a wedding planner who offers the type of assistance you need. Partial Wedding Planning: Wedding planners may have their own term for partial wedding planning, such as month-of planning, but it generally falls between full-service planning and day-of coordination. If you already booked a venue and have a general idea of what you want your wedding to be like, partial wedding planning services are perfect for you. You get help with establishing a wedding day timeline and narrowing down your design choices, while still maintaining control of the details. You’re probably going to have one or two sit-down meetings with your planner in the days leading up to your celebration, not to mention email access to your planner throughout the process. If you decide partial planning services are right for you, be prepared to make some big decisions (like where and when to host your wedding) on your own, but feel confident knowing you have a professional to help you with the details. Day-of Wedding Coordination: The term “day of” is a bit misleading, as no one could come in only on your wedding day, and effectively manage all of the details and vendors. Day-of wedding coordination usually begins at least eight to 12 weeks before your big day. Your coordinator meets with you once you hire all of your outside vendors, and takes over to finalize details and confirm coverage times for the actual day. You can expect your day-of coordinator to provide a timeline of events and manage the logistics of your wedding day. They also attend your rehearsal and coordinate any outstanding payments or gratuities.

Start thinking about how big your guest list is going to be to get an idea of how much stationery you need. But remember, the number of invites you send out is not equal to the number on your guest list. If you’re inviting 150 guests, you do not need 150 invitations. You probably have a great deal of families and couples that only need one invitation per household. Also keep in mind, that it’s a good idea to have at least five to 10 extra invitations on standby. You never know when you may wake up one night in a cold sweat with the sinking realization that you completely forgot to invite dear Aunt Martha up in Minnesota. But apart from any last-minute stragglers, you also want to make sure you have a few copies of your stationery suite to save for yourself. When your wedding day finally arrives, don’t forget to grab one to be photographed at your venue!
TACKLING THE TIMELINE Traditionally, save-the-dates are sent out eight to 12 months before the wedding. Don’t send save-the-dates to guests unless you are certain that you are inviting them to your wedding. Your more formal invitations are typically mailed about eight to 10 weeks before the wedding — but this is not a hard and fast rule. If you are planning on having a destination affair, for example, informing your guests earlier is always appreciated so that appropriate travel arrangements can be made. Consult your vendors to see when they need a final head count and then tack on a few extra weeks to give yourself some leeway. As much as we would all love for people to RSVP on time, chances are you’re going to have to do some last-minute follow up with some of your less punctual guests.
WHAT’S INCLUDED? The shining star of your wedding stationery, the invitation suite, is a package that includes the design of your invitations, as well as all of the little details that make them uniquely beautiful (every tie, every ribbon and every stroke of the fountain pen). Your invitation suite includes an outer envelope, many times an unsealed
inner envelope, the invitation, a details card, a response card and a response card envelope. Additional materials like printed maps, menu cards and hotel information can also be included. It can be a bit overwhelming, so let’s break down the basics: Envelope – Use an outer and inner envelope to identify the invited guests. Invitation – Indicate the who, what, when and where of your big day. Details Card – Include hotel accommodation information, your wedding website and other guest information. Split into multiple cards if needed. Response Card – Give guests a way to RSVP to your wedding. It can also be used to gather dinner selections and the number of guests attending from each household. Response Card Envelope – Include postage for guests and the host’s address on the envelope. You want to make sure your guests can reply to your big day as easily as possible. After your invitations are sent, there are a few other elements you may want to think about, such as your ceremony programs, table cards, seating chart, menus, favor tags and thank-you notes. Work with your stationer to keep your overall design consistent throughout your big day.
THANKS SO MUCH Although it may seem like a tedious task, it’s incredibly important to send a thank-you note to all of your guests no more than three months after your celebration. Hand-writing every single thank-you note may sound like an endless endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be distressing. Try carving out some time each week to get a handful of them completed. While there is a lot involved in creating your wedding stationery, the process doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Find a professional stationer who can give you the customized invitation suite you envision. He or she can guide you through the process from concept to delivery. elieve it or not, your choice of flowers may be one of the most impactful aspects of your wedding décor. Flowers have the power to set the mood and evoke a magical atmosphere. But it’s not as simple as just picking out what you like. Did you know that there are several different shapes of bouquets? Which members of your wedding party get flowers? Your florist can walk you through all of these details, but coming in with ideas of what you may want is always helpful.
A SHAPE FOR EVERY STYLE First things first — what style of bouquet do you want? Your florist may tell you that there are many ways to customize
your bouquet to your style, and shape is one of them. Ask to see examples of different kinds of bouquets and look at plenty of pictures ahead of time to get to know your preferences. Bring several of your favorite inspiration photos to your floral appointment. You may not know the name of every flower or arrangement technique, but a picture is worth a thousand words! (sometimes called presentation) style, which features long-stemmed flowers gathered together, meant to rest in the crook of your arm. You can also opt for the hand-tied style, which features a mix of flowers and greenery loosely tied together with a visible ribbon or twine, achieving an organic, “freshly picked” boho look. For the classic bride, the round shape is timeless, featuring one or two types of flowers gathered in an arrangement that looks good from any angle. Brides wanting a smaller bouquet can opt for the nosegay or posy style, which tends to feature just one or two types of flowers in a small rounded bundle that can easily be held in one hand. Shape is not the only physical element you have to take into account when thinking about your bouquet, but also how big the bouquet is in relation to your body. For taller brides, the sky’s the limit — go for a cascading look or an overflowing bundle, if you want. For shorter brides, it’s best to go for a smaller look. You don’t want your flowers to overshadow your face or cover up a large portion of your dress!

MATCH YOUR LOOK Your bouquet never stands alone — it is always seen with your wedding gown as a backdrop. Because of this, it’s important to match your bouquet to the style of your dress. If you are wearing a more ornate dress, full of beading or intricately patterned lace, think about choosing a simpler bouquet so that your dress takes the spotlight. This may mean that you choose one color for the flowers or use fewer blooms. With a more modern, simple gown, you can either match the minimalistic look with a simple bouquet or you can go a bit more dramatic with the flowers. If you’d like the bouquet to take center stage, go ahead and mix many different kinds of flowers or use several colors together for added drama. When you meet with your florist, be sure to bring along fabric swatches or detailed photos of your wedding dress and your bridesmaids’ dresses. That way, he or she can see the exact color palette. For instance, your florist may use a different shade of flower to match a champagne-colored wedding dress than he or she would for a bright white dress. And a pink bridesmaid dress may mean something quite different to you than to your florist. No matter what aesthetic you are going for, the time of year that your celebration occurs will play a huge part in your flower choices. If you have your heart set on daffodils, hosting your wedding in the fall is not going to bode well for your floral hopes. While many flowers are available throughout a large part of the year, there are some specialty blooms that you can only get during one season. Talk to your florist about which flowers you have in mind, and be ready to take his or her suggestions for alternative blooms that will give you the look you’re going for. For instance, garden roses or hydrangeas
can often substitute for peonies, which are beautiful, but only available for a very short amount of time.
WHO GETS WHAT? After you decide on the shape, size and blooms for your bridal bouquet, you need to think about flowers for the other people who are helping you celebrate your big day. There are no hard and fast rules for this, so choose whomever you would like! But keep reading for some of the traditional guidelines.
BOUQUETS Typically, each bridesmaid gets a bouquet that mimics or takes inspiration from the bride’s bouquet. A small posy is a great option so they have one hand free to help the bride. If your flower girl doesn’t have anything else in her hands (like a basket or a sign), it’s a cute idea to give her a mini bouquet as well. She’ll love being your mini-me!
CORSAGES Corsages are meant for the women in your family or any woman you would like to honor, including ceremony readers and other guests who have a special place in your big day. Whether you give corsages only to immediate family members (such as mothers and grandmothers) or you offer them to all your important cousins and aunts, be sure you are consistent with providing them to relatives on both sides of your families. You don’t want anyone to feel left out. Women can wear corsages in different ways. Many women pin the corsage on the left shoulder of their dress, mimicking how men wear boutonnieres. BOUTONNIERES Grooms and groomsmen typically wear boutonnieres, also known as buttonholes, which are pinned to their left lapel. To keep things easy, try “walking” or hand-held varieties of your favorite delicacies! These treats can be served at a grab-and-go station as appetizers, late night snacks or desserts. Maybe your vibe calls for peach delicacies as a Georgia shoutout. Or perhaps you’d like to channel the festival feel with popcorn of different varieties. There are so many creative ways you can contain hand-held snacks so that they’re ready to snatch off the serving table and be enjoyed. Think tiny Mason jars, personalized paper cones, or even cocktail or martini glasses. Presentation is key! Don’t forget cute napkins, fancy skewers or tiny utensils for that extra special touch.
MAIN COURSE ARRANGEMENTS How will you structure your main course? Gone are the days when plated and buffet are your only two options. There are many serving methods that allow you to create an elegant atmosphere while also minimizing
touch points for your guests. You can be thoughtful in creating safe solutions while also letting your guests be a part of a special culinary experience. Plated meals: Plated meals served by trained waitstaff are classic and elegant. This option leaves the foodhandling to the experts and eliminates any need for sharing serving spoons. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it, too? With infinite possibilities of flavor combinations, shapes and sizes, many couples find the task of deciding on a wedding cake that is delicious, as well as visually pleasing, to be a bit daunting. Your cake is often the centerpiece of your reception decor, so it needs to complement your overall vibe and fit in with your carefully chosen color palette. Read on to ensure that you’re prepared to make the most of your cake tasting and selection experience.
PREPARATION In order to make your wedding cake tasting go as smoothly and successfully as possible, some upfront preparation is required. There are six key pieces of information to know before you reach out to a bakery and cake designer: 1. Wedding Date – Selecting your wedding date is crucial before you make plans with a cake designer, especially if your celebration falls on a busy holiday for weddings, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day or New Year’s Day. By rule of thumb, couples are advised to begin reaching out to bakeries at least nine months ahead of their big day. Give yourself enough time to research bakers and cake designers in your

Lighter colors are usually associated with elegance, so stick with a fair color that matches the rest of your wedding theme to make the cake the centerpiece of your reception. If your wedding is more modern, you may want to go with more vivid colors. An ombre cake, for example, can create an eye-drawing centerpiece. You can keep it simple, or spice it up with flowers and other decorations. Including bright, dramatic colors can ensure that your cake matches your contemporary theme. A rustic wedding may inspire you to pick a naked cake. Naked cakes usually include some type of filling, like fresh fruit, but aren’t fully frosted on the outside so some of the “naked” cake shows through. If you don’t enjoy the taste of icing, this may be exactly the cake for you! And bonus — less frosting means less of a mess! 6. Budget – Do your research to get a feel for what you may want in a cake and to determine what aligns with your allotted budget. After deciding on a potential vendor or two, set up a meeting. Keep in mind that most wedding cake tastings come with a fee of around $25 per session. However, this price is often credited to your cake purchase if you choose that specific designer. Always remain realistic about your budget, but don’t be afraid to ask questions. A cake designer may be able to help you achieve the look and feel you want with an alternate technique or product.

THE LOGISTICS There’s a lot to consider once the cake leaves the bakery and makes its way to the venue. Leave the delivery up to the baker so you don’t have to worry about the cake arriving safely. Most bakeries service the immediate areas around them; however, if you live far away from the cake designer you really like, that doesn’t mean you can’t choose him or her. Simply ask what the charge would be to deliver to your desired destination. Also ask if the delivery is insured and if the delivery charges are included in the price of the cake. Plan to leave extra time for your cake designer to make last-minute adjustments prior to the reception. Most professionals suggest that getting the cake to the venue about an hour to an hour and half before guests arrive is the most ideal.

As long as you choose a venue that fits your style, it will be easier to translate that style into the design of your cake. For example, a rustic barn or a chic, contemporary museum will deliver two very different cake designs. 3. Number of Guests – It is unlikely you have your final guest headcount by the time you begin your cake tasting, but a rough estimate can dictate how many tiers of cake you need in order to offer everyone a slice on your big day. 4. Flavor Ideas – Deciding on the flavor of the cake may be the most difficult part of the process. You want to find something that everyone loves, while making sure you still enjoy the cake as well. If you and your partner have different tastes, consider alternating flavor combinations by tier. You can pick something safe for the largest tier — think vanilla or chocolate — and then each choose a more personalized flavor combination for the remaining tiers. Consider choosing more daring flavor combinations, such as lemon raspberry, hazelnut praline, cookies and cream, coffee or salted caramel. Selecting unique, personalized cake flavors can help put a delicious twist on the final notes of your celebration. 5. f there’s just one thing you want to get right when planning your wedding (other than, you know, selecting the person who will be standing on the other side of the aisle) it’s your wedding photographer. After all the champagne is gone, the flowers are wilted and the dancing shoes are in the closet, this is the guy or gal who will be entrusted with making sure every memorable moment was captured. When your big day winds down, the photos that were captured will be some of your most precious keepsakes for years to come. Here are some things to keep in mind as you decide who will be clicking the shutter on what will probably be the most photographed day of your life. (No pressure!)
1. HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT STYLE OF PHOTOGRAPHY YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. One of the great joys of the Internet age is that you can click through the wedding photographs of practically anyone you want, within a matter of minutes. Do your research before meeting with photographers to get a clear sense of what style of photography you want: vintage, artsy, classic portraits, candid, edgy, documentary-style, tons of black-and-white. Then, once you know what you like (and, equally as important, what you don’t) make that known to any photographers you’re considering. They want you to

love your photographs just as much as they do. So, if your styles don’t mesh, don’t worry, just be honest! While you’re reviewing styles of photography, also take note of any unique images you gravitate toward. By doing so, your photographer can have an understanding of what you’d like captured and confirm that your styles coincide. It’s also a chance for you to make a list of any photos you know you’ll want taken on your big day. Most photographers will ask you for this anyway, but it doesn’t hurt to plan ahead. This way, you will be sure your photographs are as unique as your wedding day itself.
2. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS. We all know there is a chance of something going awry on your wedding day, so make sure you ask the hard questions and get the fine print up front. First things first, before you fall head-over-heels in love with the work of a photographer, decide your budget. Make sure you’re clear on what that budget actually is and how much you’re willing to budge for your dream photos. Then, be sure to take the time to meet for a consultation and interview a few photographers. Ask questions like: • What happens if the photographer becomes suddenly and violently ill on our wedding day? • What does a post-production timeline look like? • How long will it take to get the proofs back? • How many photos can we expect? • When can we anticipate receiving the wedding album? • What options are available for guests who want to order a few photos of their own? • Will there be an online photo album available for sharing? • What’s your policy on posting our wedding images to social media, etc? There are no stupid questions when it comes to finding the perfect wedding photographer, we promise. Also, while you’re meeting with the photographer ask to see photography samples in person. Of course, you have

scrolled through dozens of pictures from their online albums, social media and blog posts! But, looking at images online doesn’t quite compare to looking at a printed piece. Now is also the time to ask and make note about the wedding album styles they offer and any large-print and canvas options they might have.
3. MAKE SURE YOU VIBE WITH ONE ANOTHER. You might be inclined to focus in on the photo-specific details right away such as: How many weddings have you shot? What is your creative aesthetic? But first, make sure the two of you click. While you hardly have to become instant besties or promise to name your firstborn after the fellow person snapping your wedding photos, it is important that you’re comfortable around one another. (This person is, after all, going to be snapping every kiss, slow dance and gooey-eyed gaze you share with your new spouse. You want to be able to be yourself in front of them). Pay attention to how you feel around them — what your energy is like, how comfortable you are cracking a joke or asking questions — and let that feeling help guide you.
4. BOOK YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. After meeting for a consultation to answer all of your questions about the investment, process and timeline, it’s time to book your engagement session with your dream photographer. This is the perfect way to get more familiar with your photographer —and for your photographer to get more familiar with you. They will be able to use that time to pick up on the subtleties of your relationship, as well as what lighting and poses look the best for the two of you. (If Instagram has taught us anything, it’s that you can’t underestimate the power of good lighting).
5. PRACTICE YOUR POSES. Posing is much easier said than done. It’s one thing to understand how your body should be posed, it’s another

thing to actually do it. Don’t be fooled by the way models seem to effortlessly slide into crazy-photogenic poses. Remember that these individuals are trained professionals who make their careers out of being photographed. They had to work hard to make it look so easy. The truth about good posing is that it’s often uncomfortable. As many photographers will tell you: if you’re not sore, then you’re probably not doing it right. That idea might seem counterintuitive at first. But sometimes what feels awkward actually looks way more natural than you might think. The best thing you can do is to try to relax into the pose if possible. If you’re still not convinced, your photographer should be able to show you how the photos are looking as you go along. On the other hand, while some poses can be a bit uncomfortable, you should never be in pain! If your photographer poses you in such a way that is excruciating, don’t suffer in silence. Let them know so they can adjust and accommodate.
Also, if you are confused by what your photographer wants you to do, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. A good photographer should be able to give you directions that are easy to both understand and execute. One of the most common questions couples ask when being photographed is, “What should we be doing with our hands?” This is a very valid question. Many times, the instant you step in front of the camera, your arms suddenly feel like paperweights dangling uselessly at your side. You need to give them some purpose. But you don’t have to make it too complicated. In fact, it could be as simple as both of you using your hands to support the bouquet, throwing your ring hand out in front of you to show off your bling or even delicately resting your hands on each other’s shoulders or waists. Again, your photographer will guide and assist you, but the main takeaway is to always make sure your hands are engaged. Poor posture, along with being bad for your spine, is also very obvious

in photos. A good remedy is to start developing better body awareness. In fact, you can start right now! Take stock of the position of your body. How are you sitting? Slumped forward with a curved spine and slouchy shoulders? That simply won’t do. Take a moment to draw your shoulders back, opening up your chest and lifting your chin. Draw your belly button to your spine to give yourself an instantly tighter stomach. Make a conscious effort to sit and stand up straighter. The sooner you make good posture a habit, the easier it will be to maintain when the wedding day jitters kick in. But maintaining good posture doesn’t mean you have to be tense. Occasionally, check to make sure you aren’t holding any unnecessary tension. Remember to relax your shoulders and unclench your jaw. Getting more comfortable in front of the camera with your photographer behind the lens will ensure that the photos they capture on your wedding day are picture-perfect. ■
Fine Tuning MUSIC SETS THE SCENE LIKE NOTHING ELSE. ENSURE THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LOVE IS RIGHT ON KEY
M
usic has a powerful way of conveying feelings and emotions. You know that one song on the radio? The one that you have to stop what you’re doing to belt out the lyrics? Well, now it’s time to think about what song you want to turn on to take you back to your first dance with your new spouse. By working closely with the musicians or DJ, you can craft the perfect soundtrack for your special day.
PRELUDE Think of it as welcoming music that is played as your guests find their seats. You should plan for about 30 minutes of prelude music to play in the background before the first
person walks down the aisle. Many couples choose selections that incorporate harmonious music, instrumental tracks or soft acoustic songs. As you pick these melodies, remember that the prelude music will be among the first details to set the mood and tone of your big day.
WEDDING PARTY PROCESSIONAL This processional is played when your wedding party and certain family members, like parents and grandparents, walk down the aisle. The processional music not only helps build anticipation and excitement for your entrance, but also sets the tone for the entire ceremony. A classical song like “Jesu,

Joy of Man’s Desiring,” for example, can set the stage for a traditional Christian ceremony. If you’re planning an upbeat, unconventional ceremony, you can go the route of a modern pop song. Try to make sure that whatever you pick is different enough from the prelude music so that everyone knows it’s officially time to start.
PRIMARY PROCESSIONAL The moment you first walk down the aisle is an immense one. A selection like “Canon in D” beautifully communicates a feeling of romance for both traditional and more contemporary ceremonies. The primary processional music does not have to be different from the wedding party’s processional. If there is one song that speaks to you for both, feel free to stick with it, but consider pinpointing a spot within the music (such as a big crescendo or a key change) that adds an extra “oomph” to your entrance.
RECESSIONAL The recessional song, which begins when you and your new spouse take
your first steps as a newly married couple, tends to be more celebratory and upbeat than the processionals. Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” is one of the most traditional tunes for this occasion. There are plenty of other directions you can take depending on your wedding style. For example, The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” is an equally joyful tune, and American Authors’ “Best Day of My Life” is perfect for a contemporary twist.
you are as a couple. An upbeat ’90s classic, for example, can symbolize your quirky lightheartedness, while an emotional ballad may represent your enduring love. Perhaps a classic by Frank Sinatra is more your vibe, or you could choose an upbeat arrangement to show off your dance moves. Your first official introduction to your guests as a newly married couple is during your recessional, but your entrance to the reception heralds the true start of the celebration. For the rest of the night, your friends and family will take their cues from you, so if you are sending a message that says, “Let’s party and have fun!” they will heed it and join right in.
Just as the first song sets the tone for the reception, the feeling of the last song is what your guests may carry with them and later recall as one of the strongest memories of your day. You can choose to end the night on a romantic note with a sentimental ballad to represent your love. Or, you can conclude with a high-energy song to get everyone on the dance floor one last time, or you can pick a classic, such as “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes. Have fun and choose something that will send you and your guests off smiling. ■

rganizing wedding day transportation isn’t necessarily at the top of every engaged couple’s to-do list. But when the big day finally arrives, the last thing you want to be thinking about is how you and your entire wedding party are getting from the ceremony to the reception — and it’s not a detail you want to leave until the last minute. The good news is that wedding day transportation doesn’t have to be all about the logistics of getting from Point A to B. With a little thought and advanced planning, you can schedule wedding day transportation that is not only functional, but also fun.
GIVE YOURSELF THE VIP TREATMENT. If you’re planning a sleek and sophisticated wedding, arranging a fleet of luxury cars or a stretch limo to transport you and your wedding party from the ceremony to the reception may be just the ticket. The tinted windows and bubbly make for a relaxing and refreshing ride, the kind of break you need between saying “I do” and dancing the night away.
GO OLD SCHOOL. If your wedding has more of a vintage feel, then consider arranging the service of an antique automobile company. For

ALLISON & JAMES A round of smoothies and a few games of Connect Four at a local coffee shop was all James and Allison needed to see the amazing connection they had. James said it was like a first date that never ended. Two years later, in September 2020, James proposed to Allison at the Longleaf Restaurant inside the Atlanta Botanical Gardens — a place where they share a lot of beautiful memories. Allison had always dreamed of getting married at the Hyatt Regency at Villa Christina, so it was an easy choice, after touring the venue, to select it as the place where they would host their entire wedding. The overall day had an air of intimacy and elegance with a wisteria, pink, silver and white color palette. After the ceremony and cocktail hour, the wedding party moved into the Hyatt’s ballroom for the reception and James and Allison shared their first dance. “We danced on a cloud for the first dance,” James says. “It was like a scene from a movie. And the father/daughter and mother/son dances were truly special.” The father/daughter dance was probably Allison’s most memorable moment. “My dad really came to the party and showed his moves that day!” The DJ kept an energetic atmosphere with song choices that sparked “that’s my song” moments for people over and over again. For the meal, guests enjoyed a plated dinner of chicken or salmon served with roasted potatoes and vegetables. The whole day unfolded beautifully, and the couple honeymooned in Jamaica. JOY & ERIC Joy and Eric met on a dating website and had instant chemistry. It wasn’t until roughly five years later, however, that they reconnected and started dating again. Even after all those years, the magic of that first date was still there, and they both knew they’d found “the one.” When it came time to organize their wedding, Joy and Eric gave their event planner one goal: to wow them. The team at A Conceal Affair certainly delivered. The couple had two spring ceremonies. They held a traditional Nigerian wedding to celebrate Joy’s heritage, followed by a modern American wedding at Fox Theatre, where the two love attending events. The Nigerian wedding was blooming with colorful, elaborate clothing; joyful music; a stunning performance by the Nigerian Dance Troupe; and authentic Nigerian cuisine. The American wedding had the aesthetics of a fairytale wonderland with florals cascading from oversized vases and an emerald, gold, ivory and blush color palette. The menu included wow-factor bites, like BBQ lamb ribs, beef wellington, crab cakes and salmon. The myriad entertainment elements — including a performance by Orchestra Noir to honor Eric’s Louisiana culture — kept everyone dancing all night. The couple said their most memorable moments were all about celebrating their love. Eric said he loved sharing their vows. MADISON & BRANDON To mark a milestone in their relationship, Madison booked a couple’s photo session — loving the idea of looking back over the years to see how they had grown together. Brandon had a secret plan, though. Part way through the session, he spun her around and proposed. “I couldn’t say ‘yes’ fast enough,” Madison says. Ready to tie the knot, Madison and Brandon planned their wedding in just under a year so they could exchange “I do’s” amid the vibrancy of the fall colors in an outdoor ceremony. The venue selection was easy, Madison says. Macon’s Place in Cataula, Georgia has a beautiful outdoor setting with space for a ceremony and reception. On the day of their wedding, Brandon watched Madison approach the alter as her two uncles walked her down the aisle. Tragically, Madison’s dad passed away two weeks before the wedding. To commemorate him, a memory candle was lit so he could “shine down on us” during the service. For the reception, Madison’s uncle catered the meal with slow roasted pork, baked beans and potato salad. For the cakes, Madison opted for a vanilla round cake with strawberry filling and buttercream icing and Brandon’s dessert was strawberry and traditional cheesecake. A few unexpected last minute errands made Madison wish she’d hired a wedding planner. But in the end, the day was basically perfect. “Don’t sweat the little stuff,” Madison advises to future brides. “The only thing that matters is you get to marry your best friend at the end of the day.” NUMBER OF WEDDING GUESTS: 100

THERESE & DONALD Persistence paid off in the story of how Therese and Donald started dating. When he initially messaged her on Match.com, Therese responded that she didn’t think they were a good match and wished him luck. Undeterred, Donald eventually wooed her with funny notes and check-ins until the two decided to meet — and it was amazing. A drinks date turned into dinner, and they ended up closing down the restaurant. Therese and Donald celebrated their love with a lavish New Year’s Eve wedding, ringing in 2020 with a formal black-tie ceremony. The winter wonderland theme made for photographic backdrops at every turn with dramatic florals and silver trees. “The décor was luxe with velvet and textured fabric,” Therese says. “There were lots of lights, full floral arrangements and several wow-factors throughout the wedding. This was meant not only to be visually pleasing to the eye but also to provide a sensory trigger for guests to touch and taste all the things that were put in their way.” After the sit-down dinner, guests went up to the rooftop of The Don CeSar hotel and watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks before heading into the couple’s after-party where a DJ kept everyone dancing for hours. HANNAH & AUSTIN After seven years of dating, Hannah and Austin decided to tie the knot with a ceremony that incorporated their love for the outdoors and bits of Kentucky culture (where the two of them attended college). Finding the right venue was a top priority. When they found Meadows at Mossy Creek in the north Georgia mountains, they knew they’d found the one. The seamless indoor/outdoor space allowed everyone to enjoy the majesty of the mountains. The softness of their wedding colors—white, champagne and blush—enhanced the beauty of the venue without detracting from the stunning views. “I wanted something timeless, light, romantic and natural,” Hannah says. She wore a dress by her dream designer, Sarah Seven, and added elements from her grandparents to feel closer to them on her special day. For “something old,” she wore her greatgrandmother’s opal, sapphire and diamond ring. To commemorate her grandfather (who passed away a few months before the wedding) she had one of his handkerchiefs embroidered in blue. One of the sweetest moments was Austin and Hannah’s first dance. When the two started dating, Hannah heard the song “The One” by Kodaline and knew one day it would be the song they danced to at their wedding. “In the song, the words say, ‘you make my heart feel like it’s summer, when the rain is pouring down,’” she says. “Crazy enough, our wedding day was full of rain showers. CELINE & SHAWN Celine and Shawn knew they had something special when they met for a second time at a work event. At first, the conversation was business-related. But as they veered into other topics, they both realized they had an intense connection. Five years later, Shawn proposed on New Year’s Eve, and the couple officially tied the knot in May 2021. It was important to them that their wedding was true to who they are, so Celine and Shawn blended traditional and modern elements — like a Cord, Veil and Coin ceremony that’s traditional in Filipino weddings, and jumping the broom, which is customary in African cultures. Some of the other personal touches were subtle, like the champagne theme that appeared within their wedding colors, party favors and couple’s hashtag, but it “made the day feel like it was truly ours and no one else’s,” Celine says. To make sure their day felt even more intimate, Shawn and Celine decided to have a private first look so they could spend some time together before the festivities began. “Exchanging our own vows was another one of the highlights of our wedding,” Celine says. “It allowed us to bring our full selves to the ceremony.” As the day went on, two DJs kept the energy lively, and the dance floor was busy the entire night. Shawn DJ’s in his free time, so having a great one at the wedding was on his list of must-haves. MOLLY & CAMPBELL Molly and Campbell were both working on different reality TV shows when their manager made it his mission to connect the two. The three of them went out for dinner, and Molly and Campbell ended up talking for hours after he left. Six years later, Molly proposed during a weekend getaway. She cut a hole in the side of a Nerf football and hid a candy ring pop inside for Campbell to find as they were tossing it back and forth. After hinting that something seemed wrong with the ball, Campbell pulled out the ring pop, and Molly got down on one knee with a real engagement ring in hand. A month later, Campbell surprised Molly by proposing during a hike. “That’s the awesome thing about being two women,” Molly says. “I was totally caught off guard.” The LA-based couple decided on a destination wedding to Savannah, Georgia — a place they’d visited and fell in love with a year earlier. The pair exchanged vows in front of a 300-yearold oak tree at Red Gate Farm and held the reception at the farm’s granary building. They planned special elements, like a photo booth camper for guests. For their first dance, Molly and Campbell selected “The Story” cover by Dolly Parton. BROOKE & ANDY Brooke was in Atlanta the summer of 2011 visiting her sister when she met Andy at the local pool. Brooke’s sister, Alison, was working with Andy that summer and introduced them while Andy was on lifeguard duty. Andy remembers feeling completely smitten by Brooke, and they kept in touch over the next several years until Brooke moved to Atlanta, and the two eventually began dating in 2016. Andy proposed on their annual Christmas date, surprising Brooke on the rooftop of the Ponce City Market while she was chatting with her sisters. In Andy’s words, “It was nothing short of a Christmas miracle when she said yes.” The COVID-19 pandemic forced the couple to pivot their initial plans a few times, including the decision to have a more intimate guest list of close friends and family. Their wedding fell on the New Year’s holiday weekend, so they planned a late-night wedding for a party-like atmosphere. Everyone gathered at the Cathedral of Christ the King for the ceremony before going to the reception at The Little Cottage in Smyrna. Instead of a traditional sitdown dinner, heavy hors d’oeuvres and cocktails were served. The decor for the reception was simple and romantic, with candles illuminating the space; greenery-decked tables; and a neon sign that read “It was always you,” gifted by Brooke’s sisters. HOLLY & BRAD The reception announcement that introduces a newly married couple is always a memorable moment, but having the legendary Chuck Norris perform the task is on an entirely different level. Brad and Holly had bonded over Hollywood stories when they first met — Brad had lived in L.A. for a time and Holly was interested in film school — so, naturally, silver screen icons were woven into their special day. Holly even had her cousin impersonate Marilyn Monroe during dinner, walking from table to table to snap photos with guests. “Having been in the wedding industry for 12 years prior to being engaged, I knew the exact vision for my big day,” Holly says. “So, the challenge was how to mix traditional elements with some that were unexpected, unforgettable and very us.” Holly landed on a European glam theme. She wanted guests to feel transported to another time, so the atmosphere had an air of opulence. The ceremony aisle was adorned with candles and roses and the reception was decorated with layers of white, pink and gold. As beautiful and perfect as the setting was, the most special part of the wedding day was being with each other and sharing their vows. “Brad’s most memorable moment of the entire day was seeing me, his bride, for the first time,” Holly says. “He said he knew right then and there in that moment that he had made the best decision of his life.
