COMMUNITY The Geneva National
Meet the intriguing neighbors of this diverse, resort-style community.
Meet the Souths
Sally and Eddy South’s vitality, fun-loving attitudes and dedication to community service epitomize the spirit of Geneva National.
While Eddy grew up in Georgia and Alabama, Sally always lived in Illinois. In 2021, however, they made the jump to Wisconsin and Geneva National. It was the drive along the winding boulevard with views of the golf course that first captivated them. They came up on a whim one afternoon when Geneva National was hosting a community open house. These events were rare so they wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to peek behind the gates.
“We had visited several times and something just told me that this is where we would live,” says Sally.
They returned the next year with fresh eyes, analyzing floor plans and checking out the different neighborhoods to determine which best met their needs. They finally chose a home in the Woodlands on Trevino 18, tucked
into an end unit with a beautiful view of the last hole. It was so close to the pool and clubhouse that they could easily walk. “It was the right fit for us,” says Eddy. It was especially perfect for him since he works from home and can just pop down to the driving range between calls.
Eddy went to college at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, on a Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship, entered the Army as a second lieutenant and left as a captain. His specialty was in finance, and he worked in the field to support financial and commercial exercises. Since 2007, Eddy has either worked from home or in various airports waiting to catch a plane.
“Marriott and United Airlines were my friends, but I enjoy working from home most,” he says.
Now Eddy works in corporate strategy and tactics, helping chief revenue officers and vice presidents of sales. He quips, “I have a dedicated space in the house for working,

which provides the necessary boundaries for working from home. And with most of my clients residing on the East Coast, I can still enjoy nine holes in the evening.”
Sally’s early career was with the Chamber of Commerce, first in Illinois and then in Fontana. Currently, her high energy level and love of children make her the perfect senior park ranger at Lakeland Park for Lakeland Community Church. Her friendly and outgoing manner is an asset for monitoring the safety of the children and striking up conversations with adults. The 5,000-squarefoot indoor park features a two-and-a-half-story netted play structure, a tots area, ball games and an activity wall. It’s free to the community.
Sally and Eddy work as a team to help make our community a greater place to live by lending both their time and effort to various causes. They help with Inspiration Ministries’ annual golf tournament, Santa Cause’s Balloon Adventure and Christmas Tree Festival, and Never Say Never Playland. Eddy’s military background and Sally’s organizational skills further make them integral committee members of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. They are also active in their church and lead a couple’s group in their home.
The Souths make full use of Geneva National’s amenities. They enjoy the Swim and Racquet Club by spending time splashing in the family pool with their 6-year-old grandson. They may also pop down around 4 p.m. to lounge in the adult pool with friends, and enjoy conversation and a cold one. “It’s the best of both worlds,” they say.
They keep fit by working out at the fitness center or walking around the neighborhoods. And then, of course, there’s the lure of the golf course. For Eddy, golf is a way to relax and unwind in the late afternoon after a busy day. “It’s just
me, the turkeys and the deer,” he says. Sally hopes to join him by taking lessons and learning to play, too.
On many afternoons, however, they may just walk down to the clubhouse, join in a game of bocce ball, or take a turn around the Dance Floor for a little putting contest, have a casual dinner and enjoy the live music. “We love how peaceful it is. It’s so beautiful, looking out on Lake Como with the sun on your face. We feel so blessed to live here,” Sally says. “But what we love most about living in Geneva National is the vibrant social atmosphere. With all of the functions, there’s a built-in avenue to meet people, and you can participate as much or as little as you like.”
The Souths meet people through social functions at the pool or clubhouse, and then enjoy introducing those people to each other. What better way to bring people together and mix things up than with food? The couple loves to entertain and cooking is Eddy’s hobby. He likes to experiment by mixing flavors with Mexican, Italian and Southern influences.
Eddy and Sally additionally make an annual trip to Mexico. “We love the people and the food,” the couple says. Instead of staying at a resort, though, they rent a condo so they have full access to a kitchen. Then it’s easier to shop and cook. Eddy even packs his favorite pan and chef’s knife. They want to fully immerse themselves in the culture by traveling inland to the smaller towns and markets, sampling the best local dishes, and searching to find the most interesting ingredients and best authentic cuisine.
And if you’re ever finishing up on Trevino 18 and are tempted by the scent of barbecue wafting over the fairway, chances are that Eddy has one or both of his Big Green Eggs going. “I sample the food while I cook so that I can watch my guests’ expressions when they taste it. It’s rewarding to know I’ve helped foster that sense of community,” he says.
“It’s such a great feeling, bringing people together to enjoy a beautiful evening with a little food, a little wine, a lot of laughter and good friends,” adds Sally.
The Souths could serve as Geneva National social ambassadors by bringing diverse groups of people together through their charity work, church group and social events. They could be hosting a mouth-watering dinner, organizing The Hilltop Group to watch the players come in on Trevino 18, or just starting a conversation with visitors from out of town and making them feel welcome. “We are so fortunate to live here, our lives have been enriched. We are truly blessed,” they conclude.

Meet the Dauns
These globe-trotting golfers knew they had something in common when they met at a charity golf event over 36 years ago in Green Bay. Vicki and Dan Dauns’ passion for the game led them to purchase a home in Geneva National in 2015 after living in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, for over 27 years. The couple chose a standalone condo in The Turn because of its layout, privacy, great views and proximity to (but not direct positioning on) a golf course.
“We wanted lots of golf and a secure, gated community, which is rare in southeastern Wisconsin.”
— Dan Daun
“We wanted lots of golf and a secure, gated community, which is rare in southeastern Wisconsin,” according to Dan. “Living seven months a year
in Florida, we enjoy the security that Geneva National affords us when we’re away.”
There were other reasons to choose Geneva National beyond security and golfing, too. The Dauns have family both in Wisconsin and northern Illinois, so it was a central location. Vicki’s aunt also had a good friend who lived in the community. “She and her husband couldn’t have been nicer and more informative about Geneva National. As a kid growing up in Wauconda, Illinois, our favorite place to go for the day was Lake Geneva, about 45 minutes away,” says Vicki.
Both the Dauns have traveled extensively for business. Vicki, the previous owner of a manufacturers’ representative group out of Park Ridge, Illinois, sold toys and seasonal products in the Midwest and traveled to Hong Kong frequently.

Dan started in retail, first at Prange Way, then at Shopko out of Green Bay. Later, he moved to Illinois to work in the Christmas lighting import business where he often traveled to all areas of the Far East, including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia.
Besides playing golf at Geneva National, the couple loves to visit friends, and enjoy dinner at Sweet Aroma Ristorante or Jonathan’s on Brick Street in Delavan, or Café Calamari in Williams Bay. Their favorite spot for a fun dinner in Lake Geneva is Sopra Bistro. Vicki says, “Our favorite date place is going to the Belfry. We really enjoy the entertainment and the Dove ice cream bars are not bad either.”
Vicki’s hobbies include eBay commerce, photography and bird watching. She says, “We have seen almost 40 different bird species since living here. Luckily for us, our neighbor knows an incredible amount of information about birds and other animals, so I ask her for guidance.”
In retirement, the Dauns have been golfing around the world. They say, “To date, we have played golf in Ireland, Scotland/United Kingdom,
Hong Kong, China and New Zealand, and at about 60 of the top 100 courses in the U.S., including Hawaii, and at 24 of the top 100 courses in the world. This year, we will travel to Spain and South Africa. Beyond this year, we are considering Japan and the Baltic area.”
It is hard for them to choose a favorite course: “St. Andrews in Scotland is the oldest and steeped in history, and of course, Pebble Beach in California.
A huge honor was to meet Arnold Palmer in his office at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando. But one of the most impressive is Tara Iti in New Zealand,” they suggest.
When asked for their advice to someone considering Geneva National, they said homebuyers can look forward to a “well-managed community, friendly people and top-rated golf!” A high rating coming from Vicki and Dan is praise indeed.

Meet the Fiscuses
Bluma and Jon Fiscus have been living the Geneva National lifestyle for almost 30 years. They began exploring the Lake Geneva area in the 1990s, searching for a weekend retreat away from their home in the Chicago suburbs. Their first look at Geneva National was when it was under development, where only dirt roads existed in the community and the golf courses were still being landscaped.
After reading a feature article in the Chicago Tribune about the three golf courses offered at Geneva National, the Fiscuses returned to investigate the completed community and club. What they saw “checked all their boxes” and they made their minds up to settle here after considering other community options.
A condo in the Woodlands was their first purchase in 1994. It was perfect for their weekend getaways and Jon was delighted with the three golf courses literally in his backyard. The condo was also a place where their three children and their families could visit easily.
As so often happens within the Geneva National community, though, the Fiscuses eventually decided that they wanted to live here full time. So in 2008, Jon moved his business to Lake Geneva and the couple started plans to build a single-family home. Within a year, both intentions were fulfilled. Their house is now situated in the Geneva Club neighborhood, and includes an adjacent open lot where they often entertain around the fire pit and where their grandchildren love to hunt for lost golf balls.
Together, the Fiscuses enjoy a variety of fun opportunities and community involvement options in the area in addition to golf. Some of their favorite activities include walking the Geneva Lake Shore Path, exploring Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy, working out at the Wellness Center, visiting Winter Realms, attending Lyric Opera concerts around Lake Geneva, and eating at their favorite restaurants, Jonathan’s on Brick Street in Delavan and Pier 290 in Williams Bay. Of course, they just like being with many friends within the gates, too.
The Fiscuses also do things on their own. Bluma is a member of a book club and the Fontana Garden Club where she uses her newly learned

skills as a master gardener. She has volunteered at the local food pantry and the Geneva Lake Museum. Currently, she is on the Walworth County Literacy Council where she teaches English.
Through the years, Jon has been involved with several HOA committees. He’s also had fun participating in the community Trunk-or-Treat Party that the HOA sponsors for costumed Geneva National children and grandchildren for several years. Parents and grandparents dress up to entertain and distribute Halloween candy. Jon has appeared as a pirate, the Mad Hatter, and Peter Pan with a talking alligator who tries to grab the hand of the child reaching in its mouth for candy. His costume for this year is a secret!
Bluma and Jon both emphasize, “You can never run out of things to do here, no matter what the season!”
If the Fiscuses were giving advice to someone new to the community, they would say, “Get involved. There are so many ways to meet people, whether it’s at the pool, golf course, Wellness Center or a club within the community. It’s a welcoming neighborhood where interesting, friendly people live.”

Meet the Gingriches
Katie and Bruce Gingrich’s romance is reminiscent of a Hallmark movie. They each grew up on farms in rural Illinois and they knew each other through their families. They went away to separate colleges and then migrated to the big city. For the next eight years, Katie lived in Chicago and Bruce lived in the suburbs. But one fateful summer weekend, when they were both home to visit their families, as luck would have it, they ran into one another and “sparks flew.”
They moved from Chicago to Madison and began searching for a home, but nothing really appealed to them. That is, nothing appealed to them until they fell in love with Lake Geneva and the surrounding area from visiting on weekends.
“It’s really the best of both worlds. It has a small-town feel, but also a touch of city influence. There’s a lot to do and so many opportunities. Plus, we felt it was a great place to raise kids,” says Katie. The Gingriches eventually moved to Williams Bay, but kept an eye open for property in Geneva National. The security of living in a gated community was especially attractive, but it was the natural beauty of the rolling, wooded terrain, the green
expanse of golf course and the calm of Lake Como that clinched the decision.
One day, a realtor friend advised the couple of a property that was going to become available in Geneva National and they jumped at the chance. They have made Geneva National their home for the past six years, along with their 7-year-old daughter, Isabelle, and their two dogs, Ned and Dixie. “The residents of Geneva National are so welcoming, and with so many transplants, it’s easy to have a relatable connection. We’ve made a lot of great friends,” says Bruce. “It’s so nice

raising our daughter here with all of the families making Geneva National their full-time home. She has so many opportunities to make friends.”
Growing up on a farm, dogs have always been an important part of the Gingriches lives and their family just wasn’t complete without a beloved pet, so they decided to adopt a rescue. They began by searching local shelters and, at Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock, Illinois, they found two 3-month-old lab mix puppies named Ned and Jed. They wanted to adopt both, but Jed had already found a home, so they brought Ned into their family. Alas, Ned wouldn’t be alone for long …
Once again, fate would intervene when Ned met Dixie at Lollipups Pet Resort in Delavan. They played very well together and became best friends. Sadly, Dixie’s owner had to move out of the country and Dixie had to stay behind. Knowing how well the two dogs got along, Lollipups contacted the Gingriches to see if they would be interested in adopting Dixie. She was welcomed into their home with open arms.
Bruce works in commercial banking at First National Bank and Trust. He loves to play golf, but he admits, “It’ll never be enough.”
Meanwhile, Katie is beginning a new career in real estate, working with a team under the Compass umbrella. “I’m learning so many things and feel invigorated with a new energy,” she says. She also has a new role as dance mom, supporting her daughter’s many activities. Isabelle has attended the Broadway Academy of Dance for the past three years where she studies hip hop and jazz. Her love of dance and gymnastics earned her a spot on the competition dance team for the academy, as well as a chance to perform with the Milwaukee Bucks dance team.
The family also enjoys traveling to faraway places like Cabo San Lucas, Italy, Portugal and the south of France. Once they even traveled to Paris to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert.
Bruce and Katie support local fundraising events like the YMCA Gala, the Blue Jean Ball, which supports William Guy Forbeck Research Foundation’s cancer research, and the Tree House Child and Family Center, which fights child abuse. And, for their daughter, The Santa Cause, which supports other local charities operating within Walworth County, has become an annual tradition.
Family and friends are of the utmost importance to the Gingriches with much of their social life revolving around entertaining at home. Katie loves to cook, so they often find themselves hosting game nights, weekend visitors from Chicago and holiday celebrations. “We’ve made a lot of good friends through the community and Isabelle’s school, too … and friends become family,” she says.
“We love boating and we love entertaining. This is our happy place,” according to Katie. “It’s also a gathering place to enjoy the company of those who are special to us and to make wonderful memories. And, especially for Isabelle, these memories become the touchstones of our childhoods.”
“We are so fortunate,” echoes Bruce “What a wonderful place to live and raise our family.”

GIN GENEVA NATIONAL Champions Among Us
eneva National is home to three athletes whose outstanding achievements in sports enriched their own lives and those of countless others who followed their success. Each of these competitors has a unique experience with their respective sports, but all agree that sports played an important role in improving their lives.
College Football Champion - Bob Thomas
Bob Thomas, the well-known kicker for the University of Notre Dame and Chicago Bears, and his wife, Maggie, have lived part-time in Geneva National for 12 years. They started out in a condo on the ninth green of the Lee Trevino Golf Course in the Lakelands and, more recently, moved to a single-family home not far away on the ninth tee of the Trevino Course.
According to Bob, “I probably wouldn’t be here at all. I would have never existed if it hadn’t been for the role sports played in my family heritage.” Bob’s father, as a boy living in Italy prior to World War II, was able to escape the fascists by virtue of playing on a youth soccer team. The details are complicated, but playing soccer enabled his father to leave Italy and join his mother, Bob’s grandmother, already in the United States. You could say soccer really kickstarted Bob’s family life.
Fast forward to when Bob came along, you might imagine his father encouraged him to play soccer, too. He did and excelled in the sport at his high school in Rochester, New York. Bob also tried out for the football team since
soccer-style kicking was becoming the preferred method for scoring field goals. He ended up playing both varsity sports. He kicked one of the longest field goals in high school football history at the time in the state of New York — 45 yards!
24 n Geneva National n 2024
Bob was offered a football scholarship to the University of Rochester. The University of Notre Dame was also interested in him, but without a scholarship. Because it had been Bob’s dream to play for the Irish, his parents made the sacrifice to make it possible for him to attend Notre Dame.
Bob was considered a walk-on football player at Notre Dame, meaning he had no scholarship, but was able to work out with the team. That all changed when legendary coach Ara Parseghian witnessed Bob’s talent and offered him the starting kicker position for the team with a full scholarship.
While playing for the Irish, Bob tied a school record of scoring three field goals in one game. During his senior year, in the 1973 Sugar Bowl (the game referred to as the Game of the Century Notre Dame vs. Alabama), he kicked the game-winning field goal with Notre Dame on top, 24 to 23, solidifying the national championship. In that same year, he captured another record by scoring 10 field goals in one season.
Bob left Notre Dame with 161 kicking points. He was also given the John W. McMillan award as the player who best exemplified the spirit of the scholar-athlete.
In his professional football career, Bob went on to play with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions, San Diego Chargers and, for the majority of his 12-year career, from 1975 to 1984, the Chicago Bears. Amazingly, he became the leading scorer for the Bears — not just in the kicking position, but of all the team players!
Bob considers winning the national championship at Notre Dame his greatest achievement in football. He also believes that the perseverance he demonstrated throughout his athletic career made a significant impact on his life. His determination carried over to another
bench when he was elected the Supreme Court Justice for the state of Illinois, serving from 2000 to 2020, including as Chief Justice from 2005 to 2008.

Sue Heaton is a world record holder in the sport of powerlifting and has lived in Geneva National since 2021. She moved to the community from North Barrington, Illinois, after being introduced to the area by close friends who live here. She has a single-family home bordering the sixth hole of the Arnold Palmer Golf Course.
In July 2023, Sue was awarded six powerlifting world records at the United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) National Championships in Las Vegas. The events included squat, where she squatted 148.8 pounds (67.5 kilos); bench press, lifting 126.7 pounds (57.5 kilos); dead lift, lifting 176.3 pounds (80 kilos); and the three-event combined total of 450.8 pounds; in addition to two other individual events.
There are only about two dozen women in the world who actively compete in the same category as Sue. The category is determined by whether competitors are drug-tested or not, sex, weight (between 105 and 114 pounds for Sue) and age (70 to 74 years). Her competitors did not have to be present at the Las Vegas meet, but could be located anywhere in the world where there are International Powerlifting League (IPL) judges at a sanctioned event.
Geneva National n 2024 n 25
At a powerlifting meet, there are three judges who award a white light for a successful lift by a competitor for each event. If the athlete gets at least two white lights, that’s a successful lift. The athletes are given three attempts for a clean lift.
Sue has only been attending USPA and IPL meets for the past three years, but started strengthening her body when she turned 50 after realizing she had lost stamina, body strength and muscle tone. She had been weight training for a long time when her daughter encouraged her to get formally involved with the sport so they could work out together. With some cheering on by their fitness coach, the two of them started attending meets where their confidence increased. They enjoyed the social aspect, too.
After a judge told Sue that her lifting qualified for a record at one of the meets, she started taking powerlifting more seriously and competed more often.
Powerlifting benefits its participants both physically and mentally. Sue says that it helps her concentrate on her own wellbeing in an almost meditative way and allows her to be more self-confident. Physically, it strengthens her bones, improves her balance and endurance, and keeps her mentally sharp. The social interaction with more youthful athletes makes her feel younger as well.
Stanley Cup Champion - Brian Noonan
Brian Noonan, a former professional hockey player, moved to Geneva National in the late 1990s. He bought his home on the 16th hole of the Lee Trevino Golf Course from a hockey pal of his. Since then, he and his family drive up from Elmhurst, Illinois, to enjoy golf and the pool on the weekends here.
Brian’s interest in ice hockey grew out of his days playing street hockey in the south Boston neighborhood he grew up in, along with his seven sisters and three brothers. With Brian’s parents’ encouragement to stay out of trouble, he began skating at a public ice rink at the age of seven with one of his brothers. The Boston Bruins were a winning National Hockey League (NHL) team at the time, so being a fan kept up Brian’s continuing enthusiasm for the sport.
All through his years at Archbishop Williams High School in Braintree, Massachusetts, Brian showed promise as a leading hockey player. He extended his playing time in the spring and summer on traveling teams where NHL
The highlight of Sue’s contribution to powerlifting, she acknowledges, is her latest six world records from Las Vegas. In the future, she may look forward to competing with the United States team at an international invitational event. For now, she plans to keep her body conditioned in preparation for the good life the sport enables her to live.

scouts often observed potential draft picks. This is when the Chicago Blackhawks first caught sight of Brian and showed interest in having him sign a contract.
The Blackhawks drafted Brian directly out of high school and he went to British Columbia to play junior hockey for one year. He competed in the International Hockey League (IHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL), both minor league teams for the NHL. In 1986, he had a successful year in the AHL, leading to his decision to finally sign a contract and officially join the NHL as a Chicago Blackhawk.
He stayed with the Blackhawks for seven years skating right wing. Part of that time was with Coach Mike Keenan. In 1992, the team went to the Stanley Cup finals, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games. The Blackhawks traded Brian to the New York Rangers in 1994 where he again was reunited with Coach Keenan. The Rangers had a winning season in 1994, bringing them to the Stanley Cup finals. They won the cup thanks to Brian scoring the winning goal.
This goal was not without controversy, however. The action during the last minute of the game was so fast, it was hard to discern who scored the winning goal, though Brian had his stick on the puck. At the end of the game, the goal was credited to the Rangers star player, Mark Messier. It was not until years later that the credit was finally given to Brian for scoring the game winner.
Coach Keenan continued to be part of Brian’s hockey career when he was traded to the St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. Brian also skated for the Arizona Coyotes and Chicago Wolves. Today, you can find him coaching the Chicago Jets, a youth hockey organization for players 8 to 18 years old.
Brian believes that the highlights of his years playing hockey were being chosen to play for the NHL and, of course, winning the Stanley Cup. He credits the game of hockey with keeping him “on the straight and narrow” as a kid, and keeping him focused. He hopes, as a coach, that he can use some of the same motivating factors he learned from the game to inspire his young athletes.

WITH GENEVA NATIONAL RESORT & CLUB Making Connections
Geneva National Resort & Club embraces its alliance with the residents of Geneva National to cultivate a premier master-planned community experience. Three meticulously groomed golf courses designed by golf legends Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino gracefully wind throughout the entire property, providing the neighborhoods and its residents with spectacular views.
“I’ve been in the golf business for over 40 years, and Geneva National is by far one of the most outgoing, welcoming and social places I’ve ever worked,” says Charlie Brown, member head golf professional and membership director. The resort operates as a public facility with certain events and amenities available only to members. However, several times a year, the residents of Geneva National are invited to join the membership for special events. To learn more, please visit destinationGN.com.
Winter Realms
For the past five years, Geneva National Resort has hosted this frozen fantasyland of snow and ice as a way to celebrate winter in Wisconsin. The event is open to the public, but on Wednesdays, Geneva National offers members and residents entrance for a reduced price. Also available for winter fun are the outdoor ice rink, lighted snowshoe trail and sled hill.
Yappy Hour – May 19
When you are out for a stroll, you will most likely meet residents out walking their furry friends. “Dogs are a big part of our community, not only for our health and welfare, but also for socializing,” says Charlie. And so the resort decided to host Yappy Hour as an opportunity for members and residents to meet one another. You’d be surprised how many friendships have evolved by inviting the dogs and their owners to come down to the practice range.
Fourth of July Celebration – July 4
Geneva National invites members and property owners to celebrate our country’s independence with live music, great food, and a fun zone with bounce houses, face painting and games for kids. Then we top off the evening with one of the most spectacular firework displays you’ll see here in southern Wisconsin!
The Dance Floor
Enjoy an evening on The Dance Floor, an illuminated Himalayanstyle grass putting course with surround sound, bocce ball and fire pits. Paloma Cantina offers great eats and cool cocktails. Live music is offered on the patio on Thursdays from May 9 to September 19. Play on The Dance Floor is complimentary for members, while residents receive a discount. As the day ends, gather with friends for fun or relaxation.
Charity Events
Charitable giving is an integral part of living in Geneva National. In 2003, members established a scholarship program for deserving college-bound employees, giving over $143,000 in college funding to 82 students. Members championed Color for Care to benefit cancer patients and Special Operations Warrior Foundation for the children of fallen special operations personnel. Last year, the resort and HOA raised more than $100,000 for multiple charities via the Beauty vs. the Beast Celebrity Charity Golf Match.

Homage to a Legend
By Brandon Johnson with introduction by Glen Murray
Geneva National has been privileged to share a special relationship with golf legend Arnold Palmer for over 30 years. We are thrilled to announce that Brandon Johnson, who has worked alongside Mr. Palmer for 17 years, most recently as his senior golf course architect, is guiding us through the daunting task of changing a masterpiece.
A golf course is a work of both science and art. And there isn’t a day that goes by without thinking about the health, wellbeing and growth of this integral asset for the enjoyment of our members, guests and residents.
With Golfweek’s recent acknowledgment of the Arnold Palmer Golf Course as one of America’s top 200 courses and with Johnson leading the way, we have begun significant renovations to enhance the course. We eagerly anticipate the evolution of this award-winning course to be unveiled in May 2024 and look forward to experiencing the next chapter in its storied history. It is the beginning of a new era at Geneva National.
What follows is Johnson’s narrative on the initial changes we’ve made to the Palmer Course.
Glen Murray is the chief operating officer at Destination Geneva National.
About 35 years ago, Arnold Palmer’s design team was commissioned to design Geneva National’s course on the shores of Lake Como. It quickly became a pioneer for today’s golf destination roster.
The game of golf and Geneva National’s Arnold Palmer Golf Course have evolved since those early days. With current maintenance practices and green speeds lightyears ahead of standards from a bygone era, four of the original 18 greens

simply had too much slope to remain playable and enjoyable in today’s game.
I was excited to have the opportunity to revisit the course and work together with the Geneva National team. Our goal was to implement targeted enhancements that would provide more options for course setup, enhance the overall playing experience and improve the maintenance process.
However, we faced a challenge when deciding on the extent of the renovation. While our mandate was to address main features or collections of features that were no longer functioning as intended, the scope of the project did not encompass a complete redo of the facility. The question was: How far should we go?
We believed it was crucial to acknowledge the evolution in design philosophy that has taken place since Palmer and his company completed the original course over 30 years ago. We wanted to incorporate the design intent and thinking that emerged in his later career and his former company’s latest design efforts. By doing so, we aimed to strike a balance between maintaining the course’s heritage, and ensuring it remains relevant and enjoyable for players today.
Our primary focus was on and around the greens, and this encompassed two specific issues: The first was to reduce or eliminate highly pitched slopes, and the second was to recapture lost green square footage due to contraction over time.
The First Hole
This hole demanded considerable attention throughout the project since it establishes the initial impression that resonates with golfers for the entire round.
The original green had a substantial slope from back to front, which limited viable pin locations to a small section on the front right. Additionally, there was a rocky swale that crossed the fairway twice between the landing area and the green. This feature posed playability challenges at the start of the golf round.
To address these issues, we made several changes. First, we rerouted and piped the swale, effectively removing it from play for tee and approach shots. This allowed us to slightly lower the green, and create a range of contours on the surface and immediate surrounds. These contours
now include bowls, backboards and a shedding false front, offering a wider range of pin locations with varying degrees of challenge and excitement.
Additionally, we worked on creating a continuous fairway approach from the first landing area and seamlessly blending it with the contoured surrounds. This design alteration provides players with more options for utilizing the ground game, whether it be for their approach shots or when recovering from difficult positions.
We added two bunkers, a short cross bunker that sets up the feeding ridge onto the green and a front bunker that guards pin locations on the right side of the green.
Overall, these modifications will improve the playability and variety of strategic choices available to golfers on this hole.

The Second Hole
With the original first hole crashing toward the players like an avalanche, the green on number two flipped the script. While grades were not overly severe, the green tilted away from play, making it extremely difficult to stop approach shots on the green.
Our enhancements start with the approach to the green. On the left side, there is now a safer bailout area that gradually transitions into a slender ridge. When played correctly, this ridge guides golf balls toward the green. On the other hand, the right-side approach and surrounds feature steeper shedding contours, strategically placed to protect pin locations on the front and back right edges.
As a result of these changes, players now have the option to take different approaches. They can choose to carry their shots to various new and enticing pin locations, or utilize the feeding slopes in the approach to access the green. The subtle movement in the green surface adds an element of strategy, requiring players to carefully consider their approach and recovery shots, and the options available on the putting surface.
These enhancements add more depth to the overall playing experience, creating opportunities for creativity and decision-making throughout the hole.

Sixth Hole Plan
The Sixth Hole
The original green was a close cousin to the back-to-front pitched green on the first hole, just not as severe nor as troublesome to pin correctly. However, some adjustments were still necessary.
In our renovation, we aimed to maintain elements of the original risk/reward play, particularly the character and feel of playing the pin high vs. below the pin. At the same time, we introduced a few new elements to enhance its features. For instance, we achieved a balance of feeding, shedding and holding slopes, creating a range of attack and recovery scenarios for players.
The addition of a back right greenside bunker accents the right edge and sets up a dramatic pin perched on an upper rise. This is contrasted by a bowl-like back left pin that’s nestled against the existing back slope to serve as a backboard. To protect front pin locations, we incorporated a false front, which not only adds challenge, but also reveals the green surface from the fairway below.
From one day to the next, the combination of contour and pin locations will present fun and different challenges on this hole.

“The May 2024 reopening of my mentor’s course in Lake Geneva marks the beginning of a new era for Geneva National and its collection of exceptional courses.”
– Brandon Johnson
The 14th Hole
The work done to the 14th hole illustrates both the breadth of scope and design changes we made during the project.
The original 14th green fell away from the line of play in similar
fashion to the second green. While holding approach shots was not overly problematic, the main issue was the contraction of the green’s size over time. Approximately 3 to 6 feet around the perimeter had been lost, resulting in a smaller intended target area, about 10 to 15% less than
the original design more than 30 years ago.
Despite this, the green featured subtle and intriguing contours that added depth and character to the green complex.
Our objective was to preserve some of the original green’s subtle nuances while additionally reducing the front-to-back tilt. By doing so, we increased the number of potential pin locations and improved overall playability.
However, this adjustment may also create a challenge for golfers in reading the green effectively. The softened contours now blend more seamlessly with the larger movements of the surrounding land, making it trickier to discern the break and slope of the green.
Undoubtedly, members and guests alike will enjoy the process of gaining local knowledge through familiarity and discovering the best strategies for approaching the green.
I am genuinely excited for the membership to experience the latest changes made to the Arnold Palmer Golf Course. The May 2024 reopening of my mentor’s course in Lake Geneva marks the beginning of a new era for Geneva National and its collection of exceptional courses.

Brussels Sprouts
“It’s one of our most popular side dishes.”
– Ryan Short, Executive Chef, Hunt Club Steakhouse Ingredients
• Canola Oil, enough to deep fry (see note below)
• 1 Pound of Brussels Sprouts, halved
• 3 to 4 Strips of Bacon, chopped
• 1 Shallot, sliced
• 3/4 Cup of Champagne Vinegar
• 3/4 Cup of White Granulated Sugar
Note: To achieve even caramelization, deep fry the Brussels sprouts at 350°F until they are bright green and tender. (This is the best way to go, but doing that at home may not be for everyone. Alternatively, toss the halved Brussels sprouts onto a
sheet tray with lots of olive oil and kosher salt, then spread them into an even layer. Roast in an oven at 450°F for 12 to 15 minutes or until tender.)
While the Brussels sprouts are cooking, add a small amount of oil to a frying pan and sauté the sliced shallot and chopped bacon until the bacon crisps up.
Begin preparing the agrodolce sauce by combining the sugar and champagne vinegar in a small pot. Heat it until it’s reduced by at least half. Stir the agrodolce sauce frequently, so it doesn’t burn.
Toss the cooked Brussels sprouts with the bacon and shallot mixture. Finish with the agrodolce sauce before serving. It’s a surefire way to wow your friends and family.

GENEVA NATIONAL The Heart of
Much of the beauty of Geneva National is easily seen. The community is surrounded by incredible gifts of nature: the diversity of trees, wild turkeys and sandhill cranes, families of deer and other creatures too numerous to mention. The gentle, rolling hills embrace three world-class golf courses that attract golfers from near and far. The gorgeous homes and landscaping, as well as other amenities, make Geneva National an extraordinary setting for a healthy lifestyle. But what is not so easily seen is the heart of Geneva National.
This is an introduction to the four chambers of the heart — wellness, meditation, creativity and generosity — that reveal the spirit and inspiration that are hidden gems in the community.
The Heart of Wellness — The Benefits of Group Exercise
Exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, benefitting both the physical and mental wellbeing of participants. While individual workouts have their advantages, group exercise sessions can lead to increased motivation and commitment, more structured workouts, and a greater output of endorphins.
Exercising alongside like-minded individuals fosters a positive and inspiring environment, boosting motivation and a commitment to fitness goals. Group members frequently encourage and support each other, creating a camaraderie that helps individuals overcome challenges. The sense of accountability within a group can also be a powerful tool
for staying consistent and focused, and it opens doors to expanding social circles and forming bonds with individuals who share similar goals.
How many of you walk into the gym and have no idea what to do? When it comes to group exercise, having a predetermined, structured workout before you even get to the gym is an incredible benefit. Most of us are overwhelmed by having to come up with a different workout day after day. We can become bored, and do the same thing over and over, which is great for movement, but bad for progress.
Attending a class eliminates the guesswork. The instructor lays out the plan and, often, you don’t know how many reps you’ve done, just that you’ve done them. What a relief!

Many studies have proven that moderate to intense exercise elevates serum beta-endorphin levels, which is linked to several psychological and physiological benefits, including mood state changes, altered pain perception and the stress responses of several hormones.
This is what gives us that “runner’s high,” the euphoric feeling you get during and after more intense exercise. Exercising in a group enhances all of these responses greatly because we tend to work out a little harder when in a group. Whether that’s because we are competitive or just keeping up with the class, it helps us go above and beyond our normal exercise levels and gives us those endorphins we crave.
Group exercise sessions are led by qualified instructors and trainers who offer expert guidance and knowledge. These professionals can help participants with proper form, technique and exercise modifications, ensuring safety and maximizing the benefits of each workout. We have a diverse range of activities, classes and formats to choose from here at Geneva National, which makes workouts more enjoyable and less monotonous.
Our head group exercise instructor Lori Scotney expertly guides you through our classes. She has her bachelor’s degree in physical education and health, and is an American College of Sports Medicine- (ACSM-) and American Council on Exercise-certified personal trainer and slow movement instructor.
Lori has dedicated her profession, knowledge and many years of experience to preserve the health of individuals. She specializes in super slow resistance training, which focuses on controlled lifting and lowering with resistance

The Heart of Meditation — Benefits for the Community
Heart Meditation is a breathing practice that can help cultivate the sacred qualities of the heart, such as compassion, empathy and unconditional love. These qualities can have a profound effect on individuals and the community as a whole.
Both empathy and compassion help to foster a culture of understanding, kindness and tolerance, promoting harmonious relationships and a sense of togetherness.
The regular practice of Heart Meditation reduces stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. This improved emotional wellbeing leads to healthier and happier individuals who are more apt to contribute positively to the community’s general atmosphere. When individuals develop a sense of calm and understanding, it enables them to approach conflicts with patience, openmindedness and a willingness to find peaceful solutions.
Heart Meditation can also improve social connections that foster cooperation and build a supportive network. During challenging times, Heart Meditation can promote a sense of strength, resilience and unity that encourages individuals to come together to support one another as well.
When the qualities of the heart are uncovered, a common humanity that transcends boundaries, such as race, socioeconomic status and political divides, is revealed.

Within our hearts is a genuine desire to alleviate the suffering of others. This, too, can be enhanced through Heart Meditation. Individuals who achieve greater compassion through heart-centered practices are more likely to engage in acts of kindness, volunteerism and service, benefitting all members of the community.
Though these benefits may seem intangible, it is possible to observe the changes from Heart Meditation within one’s physical heart using biofeedback. The HeartMath Institute research foundation is committed to providing solutions for activating the heart of humanity. While using its software, it is possible for individuals to witness chaos in their heart rhythm from stressful thoughts and emotions. When engaging the practice of Heart Meditation, however, the

Jeri Holm always liked to draw as a child, but an art teacher in high school inspired her to see the world differently by teaching her contour, gesture and life drawing.
After adding pen and ink to her skills, she landed a part-time job in the advertising department of her local high school newspaper. She attended college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and graduated with a degree in art education and a minor in drawing. She loved her art history, art therapy, weaving, jewelry, advertising and art education classes. In the ‘70s, she learned to paint on canvas with oil and acrylics. Modern art was popular and, since Jeri liked realism, she was told to loosen up.
After college, she taught art, journalism, English and history at an alternative high school in Dallas. Because of her guidance and encouragement, one of Jeri’s students continued on to get an art degree and master’s in art therapy. Later, she worked part-time at a mail-order catalog, painting and personalizing gift items. She also worked at advertising agencies in Dallas where she loved designing ads and layout.
Then she started a gift shop inside of a children’s store in NorthPark Center mall, where she hand-painted and personalized gifts. As a freelance artist, she designed logos, illustrated a line of cards, and drew portraits until she married and had her daughter. Working from home, she

became an art director for a company with custom-painted hair bows.
When a friend showed Jeri a spring shaped like a tornado on both ends that her husband used for work, she said, “I see earrings!” In the space of eight years, she made and sold thousands of pairs. She continued her crafts with bunk beds for Beanie Babies and Trolls clothes when they became popular again.
“I love to come up with unique ideas, and make and sell them because it makes me feel good. It gives me purpose to make things and give them as gifts. It is therapeutic to teach others to make art,” too, Jeri says.
The idea of cork Christmas trees and holiday ornaments came to her when she moved to Geneva National. But, according to her, that wasn’t her only holiday endeavor. “For 20 years, until I moved here seven years ago, I taught women to make cards and the techniques of stamping. It was so fun to see women who said they weren’t crafty make a beautiful card, and feel so proud that they wanted to keep it and not send it,” she says.
Jeri continues to paint, now making art for herself. “I still love doing detailed, realistic artwork the most,” she says, “but I’ve started experimenting with more Impressionist styles” as well.
Jeri also tutored artists in her home before her serious illness. Since then, however, she’s created several paintings as gifts for her oncologists, who did her stem cell transplant and CAR-T treatments. For nurses, receptionists and lab technicians, she makes paper-crafted gifts and handmade all-occasion card sets.
Additionally, nurses put Jeri’s birthday-themed boxes with candy on the chair of birthday recipients in the infusion room before they arrive for chemotherapy.
And when Jeri is getting her treatment, she hands out the cards she makes to patients in the room. She admits, “My passion is drawing, painting and design, but my therapy is crafting gifts for others.”

The Heart of Generosity — Improving Relationships and Empowering Others
Dave and Sally Bunge have been Geneva National homeowners for 19 years. They first became acquainted with the community when visiting Dave’s father who had a getaway place in the Woodlands. They loved it so much that they ended up purchasing his home, becoming part-time residents, and splitting their time between Geneva National and their home in Barrington, Illinois.
According to Dave, “I liked that Geneva National was only an hour away from family, friends and business interests in Illinois, but far enough away that, when I’m here, I can relax and focus on the beauty, activities and rich social life afforded by living in Geneva National.” In July 2019, the Bunges purchased a home in Golfview Terrace, thus becoming full-time residents.
Dave’s career spanned 42 years as a certified public accountant (CPA) and certified financial planner (CFP). Shortly after his retirement in 2019, he realized how much he loved his work helping others achieve their goals. He was able to integrate his career into retirement by offering his expertise to a select few. His focus is now on helping those who are ready to begin planning their own retirement by offering services centered around exit planning, business improvement and valuation.
“I’ve been blessed with an education and experiences that have value and, if I’m not employing those skills by helping other people, then I don’t feel as if I’m using everything God has given me,” he says.
Dave’s “semi-retirement” allows him to retain his real estate holdings and consulting work, while giving him time to serve his community through charity. He is on the finance and men’s ministries committees at Calvary Community Church, and serves as a board member at New Day Women’s Clinic and Inspiration Ministries. A program close to his heart is Inspired Coffee in Lake Geneva, which Inspiration Ministries owns and operates. Inspired invests in enhancing the lives of special needs individuals with a six- to 12-month training program that draws candidates from the greater population of our community.
“It’s a launching pad, not a landing pad,” says Dave. The training teaches basic life skills along with the encouragement to build self-esteem and confidence in social situations. Inspired helps the trainees find jobs, enabling them to make their transition into the secular world.
Some of Dave’s greatest gifts may be his outgoing personality, and his ability to connect individuals professionally or socially, getting the conversation started between those with charitable hearts. “I focus on building relationships and connecting people who may share the same interests or passions. A random introduction can grow into a lifelong enterprise of service and friendships,” he says. “If I stay silent, then I’m not giving the person the opportunity to find out something or someone wonderful.”
Dave gets personally involved as well, especially in his work at Inspiration Ministries. Its mission is: “Opening a world of opportunities for people living with disabilities to thrive and achieve God-given purpose.” He often connects one on one with residents where he is afforded the opportunity to be a friend by accompanying them to special events like the county fair. One day, while speaking with a trainee at Inspired Coffee, he learned of his interest in golf. Dave contacted his guardian and invited the young man to an afternoon on The Dance Floor at Geneva National where they had some fun putting followed by lunch.
“I love being able to get to know the trainees. They are very special people, all unique, and their perspective on what matters in life is so wonderful,” he says.
Dave’s passion is people, meeting them, connecting with them and helping them to connect with others. This is evident in his participation in various Geneva National community activities. He was instrumental in helping to launch Lifestyle Geneva National magazine and running the Geneva National Happenings newsletter. He founded the Geneva National Adventurer’s Group by organizing monthly activities such as hikes, boat and bike trips, and ziplining. He has served on the Geneva National Master Association Board as a representative for the Woodlands and Golfview Terrace. And in his free time, he likes to travel, hike or gather with friends for a lively round of golf.
Dave and Sally, his wife of 43 years, love to travel to visit their three children, six grandchildren, and friends and family members throughout the country. The Bunges also love their home base at Geneva National, a great place to live and entertain visitors. “Our lives here in Geneva National are enriched by our beautiful surroundings and caring neighbors. I am blessed and I enjoy blessing others,” he concludes.

ON THE PAST Reflecting
Previous “Reflecting on the Past” articles in Lifestyle Geneva National have painted a picture of days gone by prior to the development of Geneva National. The articles reveal historical insight into the discovery of Woodland and Potawatomi Native American dwellings, the Kemah Arabian horse farm owned by Harris Bank executive Albert W. Harris, and Crane Farms, which was owned by the Crane Plumbing Company.
During the late 1980s, at the time Geneva National was still being developed, several abandoned dwellings from the past still existed, including the barn, servants’ quarters and sanatorium of Crane Farms, Kemah Farms and a home belonging to Chicago bank executive Harry A. Wheeler. Only two of these properties were scheduled for renovation: the barn (now the offices of Lowell Custom Homes) and the sanatorium (now Hunt Club Steakhouse).
The distinctive, neighboring properties owned by Crane Plumbing Company, Harris and Wheeler comprised the southern border of today’s Geneva National. This article will divulge new information on Harris and Kemah Farms, his introduction to Wheeler and the relationship between these early 20th century residents.
Kemah Farms
Kemah Farms, the beloved Arabian horse farm of Harris (1867-1958), was the most infamous property within Geneva National. “During 1910, the Chicago bank tycoon
56 n Geneva National n 2024
brought to realization a dream of becoming a gentleman farmer, with the purchase of a 140-acre farm encompassing the western border of Duck Lake (now Lake Como).
The undulating, rolling hills of the glacier-carved property afforded Harris an opportunity to ride his beloved Arabian horses from the highlands to the lowlands throughout the property,” according to the Arab Horse Journal.
Harris was recognized as the dean of Arabian horse breeders. The journal further stated, “The aim at Kemah for the future, as it has been in the past, is to produce the kind of Arabian horse
A.W. Harris admired — a beautiful animal with the ability to do what a good horseman demands of his mount and which the Arabian breed is so amply endowed.”
Following the passing of Harris, his son, Norman (named after his grandfather Norman Wait Harris), continued breeding horses at Kemah until his passing in 1965.
In 1922, Harris published a pamphlet on the Arabian horses of Kemah. In this publication, he gave a “general description of the distinctive features of the breed and [attempted] to correct some erroneous notions which have been quite largely held in connection therewith …
“The one which seems to be most prevalent is the generally accepted idea that the Arabian is a spotted or white horse with a pink skin. These were the horses of P. T. Barnum palmed off on us many years ago in the circus, along with the cherrycolored cat and the bearded lady! This illusion is dispelled when we learn that there never has been a spotted Arabian horse and that, no matter how white the horse might be, his skin is dark.”
Regarding color, Harris stated that chestnut seems to predominate, followed by bays, grays, a few browns and, occasionally, pure white or black.
The Boulders
Bordering the north side of Highway 50, prior to entering Geneva National from the east, you may notice five fieldstone pillars capped with
egg-shaped stones. During the 1920s, these pillars denoted the entrance to The Boulders, the charming country home of Wheeler, the former president of the Union Trust Company of Chicago.
The distinguished banker held many distinctive positions throughout his career, including the first president of the United States Chamber of Commerce, the chair of the Permanent Committee on Relations between the United States and Uruguay, the Federal Food Administrator for Illinois during World War I and the chair of the National Commission on Unemployment in 1931.
Undoubtedly, Harris introduced Wheeler to the property.
Wheeler’s charming two-story home faced northeast, capturing a distant view of Duck Lake, and delightful views of prolific flowering gardens, open-air trellises overflowing with wild roses and lily ponds. During the early 1920s, a greenhouse known as the Lake Geneva Nursery was constructed on the property, according to Wheeler’s former gardener and caretaker Robert A. Hansen (1923-2015). Some of the largest chrysanthemums in the Midwest were raised there.
Geneva National n 2024 n 57
Camp Kemah
Hansen, who resided at a cottage on the Wheeler estate, shared documents from 1952 denoting that Wheeler’s daughter, Lindsay Wakely, transferred ownership of The Boulders to the Chicago Boys Club.
Following the transfer of the property, Hansen continued his employment working for the Chicago Boys Clubs in the capacity of gardener and caretaker. It was during 1953 that Wheeler’s neighbor, Harris, donated 30 lower acres of
his Kemah Farm to the Chicago Boys Club — one of his favorite social organizations. The Kemah Farm transaction included an elegant Spanish-style country home that featured commanding views of both Geneva and Duck lakes, a carriage house, some outbuildings and small horse barns on the southern section of the farm.
The Chicago Boys Club named the newly acquired property Camp Kemah and, during the early 1960s, the camp accommodated up to 70 young campers. A postcard promoting the camp featured a picture of the magnificent Harris home with the caption: The Lodge –Chicago Boys Club – Camp Kemah.
In a letter dated November 1, 1965, Joseph N. Clemens, executive director of the Chicago Boys Club, wrote to General R. E. Wood, an officer and honorary chair of the club, inquiring what was needed at the camp.
Clemens responded that “the overall need of Camp Kemah was to enlarge its capacity by developing a unit back up in the hills. An expansion would involve constructing cabins, dining room facilities, a complete camping unit, etc.” General Wood requested a detailed report, suggesting requirements to further expand the camp.
During the summer, the boys at Camp Kemah enjoyed raising chrysanthemums, known as “the
58 n Geneva National n 2024
queen of fall flowers,” at the nursery. Some even described Camp Kemah’s chrysanthemums as the largest and most distinctive flowers grown within the Midwest.
In fact, the Chicago Boys Club sent flowers to several of Chicago’s most illustrious families, including those of Mayor Richard J. Daley, Frank Barbour, Philip Hampson and Benjamin Rosenthal.
Endearing thank-you notes, addressed to the executive director of the Chicago Boys Club, were discovered in the attic of the former Crane Farms servants’ quarters prior to the razing the building, including:

Mrs. Daley particularly appreciated receiving the beautiful chrysanthemums, which came from the summer garden cared for by the youngsters who attended camp at Kemah Crane Farms in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Kindest regards and good wishes!

A Rich History
Over the course of time, three neighboring properties, including Crane Farms, The Boulders and Kemah Farms, all intertwined to provide a fascinating history prior to the development of Geneva National. These memories still trace the land, leaving their imprints by way of structure and pillar. Without this rich history, the community wouldn’t be what it is today.

CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY Mars Resort
What makes it possible for a business to last for 100 years? Scott Pohl, one of the owners of Mars Resort in the town of Geneva, says its strength is in its traditions. Chicagoans and locals alike have found it a quaint getaway off the beaten path. According to Pohl, “Lake Como is more of an afterthought. People don’t come to Mars to be by the lake. They typically get lost and stumble upon it.”
The business has changed hands many times over the years, but is currently owned and operated by Pohl and Arney Silvestri. Mars Resort was first established in 1923 with the opening of a speakeasy in the seasonal Old Glory Camp restaurant. It was located on a now defunct Chicago & North Western Railway spur that, according to Pohl, “used to run right through our parking lot” to Williams Bay.
Prohibition-era gangsters like George “Bugs” Moran, John Dillinger, George “Baby Face” Nelson and Al Capone would get on the train to get out of Chicago, and stop and have a beer at Mars before going to The French Country Inn (then known as The Adelard Cunin), which Pohl and Silvestri also own. Pohl mentions that the gangster history of the area is so popular that a gangster boat tour that existed pre-pandemic is currently in the process of being revived.
With the end of Prohibition, the clientele became slightly less colorful, but given the resort’s location on a sandy beach on Lake Como, it’s no less desirable as a destination. The business was renamed Langwirth Resort in 1944,
and finally Mars Resort in 1949 for its namesakes Robert and Christine Marszalek. They added cabins in the 1960s, attracting sportsmen who liked to ice fish and boat.
Mars Resort eventually transitioned from seasonal to year-round operations in 1961 under then-owners Jack and Elgie Smith. Then, in 2016, childhood friends Pohl and Silvestri decided it would be fun to purchase this quintessential example of a classic Wisconsin supper club to preserve it. “Arney and I have been coming here since we were kids. It is a part of our past, and near and dear to our hearts, and we wanted to continue the tradition for future generations,” Pohl says.
Then he jokingly adds, “Plus, we had several people threaten us if we tried to turn it into something else.”
Most of the building dates back to near the beginning, although the interior has been remodeled several times, including an addition in the 1950s and again when the large windows were added to offer a 180-degree view of Lake Como.
60 n Geneva National n 2024
Shortly after purchasing the business, Pohl and Silvestri also undertook a comprehensive remodel, but without sacrificing the feel of an old-school supper club. The renovation included a lit stone bar, and an extensive revitalization of the beachfront to include an expansive patio, docks, and a 45-foot pontoon boat for free
cocktail and after-dinner cruises. It’s a great way to end the evening. The patio also boasts a seasonal tiki hut with a full bar and an outdoor grill where a full slate of live music is offered through the summer. Mars Resort’s location on the south shore of Lake Como “opens the door to a lot more opportunities to entertain guests while they wait for a table,” says Pohl.
At Mars, barbecue ribs are a menu specialty. They come slathered in housemade barbecue sauce or served “Cisco style,” with a dry rub with a proprietary seasoning blend. Chef Joe Payne introduced the recipe in the late ‘70s and Pohl says that, in 2023, the restaurant sold more than 17 tons of ribs (or 34,000 pounds).
The bar and dining area at Mars Resort has long been a favorite spot for stunning sunset views of the lake, and the décor features iconic, largescale photo prints of the Lake Geneva

area in the 1950s. On Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year, the bar hosts a piano player and, during the summer months, bands play outside on the beach for those enjoying the restaurant’s outdoor seating.
Last spring, Mars hosted a gala at The Riviera Ballroom to kick off a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary. The Hidden History
OF GENEVA NATIONAL’S NEIGHBOR
Just outside of the Geneva National entrance gates, off Highway 67, a quarter mile south of Palmer Road, a historical marker denotes an almost-hidden history. It reads: “The Williams Bay Air Force Radar Station, home of the 755th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, was part of a nationwide Cold War effort to defend the continent against possible airborne attack from the Soviet Union.”
The radar surveillance station system did not gain wide support until the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb in August 1949. To defend the United States against the perceived threat of Soviet air attack, the U.S. military devised the Air Defense Command (ADC) system of radar surveillance stations connected at first by telephone, and then by an early, primitive computing system, to provide fast and automated coordination of ground-controlled interception of enemy aircraft.
The program was known as the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system.
In 1949, the Air Force purchased about 40 acres of land that included the highest point in all of Walworth County from farmers in Williams Bay. The construction team finished the Williams Bay Radar Base at an estimated cost of $1.5 million.
On November 27, 1950, the 755th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron officially began operation with a pair of AN/CPS-6B radars at the site. Over 200 servicemen lived in dormitory-style barracks, ate in a cafeteria-style mess hall and supported the operation of the large radar antennas on site.
The Williams Bay radar base was one of 28 radar stations built as part of the military’s ADC program, an expanded surveillance network approved by Congress in response to the fear of Soviet bomber attacks associated with the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950. Nationally, the ADC engaged thousands of radar operators, pilots and technicians in a common mission — “the detection, identification and interception” of potential enemy aircraft.
The Williams Bay installation originally contained 19 buildings, including five barracks for enlisted men,

bachelor officers’ quarters, the mess hall and the radar domes. By the time the government closed the base in 1959, the number of buildings had grown to 25. The nine prefabricated homes for married officers are still in the northwest corner of the property.
The security at the radar base reflected the importance of the work being done there. A barbed-wire fence enclosed the perimeter and an Air Police guard station served as gatekeeper. According to a Janesville Daily Gazette article from 1952, “All traffic either in or out of the base is stopped at this point while the Air Police finds out whether the occupants of the car may be permitted to pass … If permitted to enter, [visitors] are met at the security office by another armed guard who guides them to their destination.”
A large steel door protected the room where the radar units were housed. Radar operators monitored the radar screens 24 hours a day and recorded any activity. The article describes some of the “modern amenities” offered to the men stationed at the Williams Bay radar base, including Coca-Cola vending machines, “modern steel and plastic furniture,” a TV set, a library, pinball machines, a jukebox, a piano, athletic equipment, and a small, but wellstocked post exchange store that also contained a soda fountain.
An “Air Defense Command Guide to Bases” accurately described the climate in Williams Bay as “refreshing

and healthful. Temperatures range from below zero in the winter to above 90°F in the summer.” The guide said that adequate houses and apartments were available year-round for those wanting to live off base. “Normally rents vary from $50 to $75 a month, but they are also somewhat higher during the summer,” it warned. The guide mentioned that there are 29 lakes in the area, but no need to leave the base if an airman didn’t want to because of the extensive recreational facilities afforded.
The 755th operated in relative secrecy, ready to provide instant communications about suspicious aircraft to the regional processing centers at Truax Field in Madison and O’Hare Field in Chicago. Through the 1950s, the Air Force rapidly built a nationwide network of radar stations. By 1957, the system comprised over 200 stations.
The successful launch of the Soviet Sputnik satellite in that year caused a shift in the focus of aerial defense from aircraft to ballistic missiles, leading to the gradual decommissioning and merging of the radar defense network.
The Williams Bay 755th ceased operations in January 1960 in a budget reduction move. The mission and organization transferred to the existing United States Army Arlington Heights facility C-80DC for the Nike missile air-defense system as part of the Chicago-Gary Defense Area.
Geneva National resident Michael Freeborn has a personal connection to the station. His wife’s sister, Sandie, was married to Carl Wenzler (now deceased). Wenzler grew up in Milwaukee and enlisted in the Air Force after high school. One presumes he wanted to “see the world.” Instead, he got assigned to the facility at Williams Bay, about 50 miles from home, and was there for all four years of his active duty, from 1954 to 1958. Like other enlisted men, he earned extra money during his time off by doing odd jobs in the community, such as cutting grass at Lake Lawn Resort, shoveling snow, etc.
Freeborn’s father, Colonel Andrew W. Freeborn, was assigned to Truax Field in Madison in 1960. Michael recalls, “He undertook command of the Chicago Air Defense Sector, a more advanced and centralized
64 n Geneva National n 2024
system of computerized radar, which had recently allowed the decommissioning of standalone squadrons like the 755th. Prior to his assignment at the SAGE facility in Madison, my father had been commander of various Aircraft Control and Warning Squadrons just like the 755th. He spent most of his career at North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) bases, retiring after 30 years.”
In October 1959, the Air Force issued a closure notice for the Williams Bay radar base. The base sat empty for a few years, but eventually, the federal government sold the property to the state of Wisconsin for use as a prisoner prerelease minimum security prison, a role it served from 1962 until 1972. The state then sold the land to a local developer who converted it into an industrial park. A few of the original buildings remain today, although they’re mainly used for storage.
To prevent the once vital Cold War era installation from being forgotten, the Wisconsin Historical Society erected a commemorative plaque on the site as a reminder of the role of the 755th servicemen to visitors. The presence of the historical marker dovetails with a growing effort to commemorate and honor the veterans of the Cold War.
Michael recalls, “Almost 50 years later, in 2006, Carl and Sandie visited the site where the historic marker now stands. Carl was pleasantly surprised and very proud. He had a big smile on his face. It must have been quite satisfying to read about how his service there was recognized as having helped our country win the Cold War.”
Until Michael and his wife, Nancie, moved to Geneva National in 2014, he was unaware of the site. “I wish my father (who died in 1994) could have had the opportunity, like Carl did, of seeing the plaque with such recognition for their contribution to our national defense.”
Michael presumes that the patch of land on which the historic marker sits is public property. He adds, “It wouldn’t take much to restore the immediate area to a condition befitting its history. I’d like to see that and I’m looking into it.”

Forbes rankings are developed by SHOOK Research and are created using an algorithm that includes both qualitative (in-person, virtual and telephone due diligence meetings; client impact; industry experience; review of best practices and compliance records; and firm nominations) and quantitative (assets under management and revenue generated for their firms) data. Geneva National Is a True Value Compared to Other Area Communities
One of the key factors when making a decision to purchase a home is knowing what other costs may be incurred in addition to the home. Geneva National continues to be a
value when considering the total overall cost of homeownership. The current HOA monthly fee for Geneva National covers a number of expenses that other area subdivision owners pay for separately, either as a quarterly bill — such as a water bill — or included in annual real estate taxes. Pictured is a comparison of what your Geneva National HOA fees cover relative to other nearby subdivisions.
In addition to the different services listed in the chart, your monthly Geneva National HOA fee also covers the cost of security, and membership to the Swim and Racquet Club. For multi-family owners, the monthly Geneva National HOA fee covers not only those services listed above, but also landscaping, snow removal, building maintenance and painting, property insurance and reserves for capital projects, such as roof replacements.
Geneva National truly is a value when you consider the many amenities and services included with your investment.

A Community Where Development Continues and Dreams Come True BUILDING AND RENOVATION
Geneva National communities continue to grow, and offer a variety of styles and price points to meet every homeowner’s needs. Whether families are looking for a vacation home or a new primary residence, Geneva National has what you are looking for.
In 2023, both multi-family units and single-family homes were in great demand, with a total of 79 units sold. Lake Geneva area real estate professionals can attest that most units placed on the market were sold quickly and market pricing was very strong.
When we look at the new home market, builders and property owners presented 19 new single-family projects to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC), all of which add to the value of the property and enhance the communities where they’re located.
The concept for Geneva National as a “value-driven recreational-residential community” was founded in the early 1990s. That concept continues today, and is enhanced due to the architectural standards that were established and maintained as development continues and new communities are presented for development. The future is yet to be built as Geneva National has approximately 28% of its single-family lots available, and 69% of its multi-family units still to be conceptualized, proposed and built.
We are a community where each single-family home and multi-family community portrays a unique sense of style with lasting beauty and value. Whether you want a golf course view, a hillside that overlooks Lake Como or a secluded wooded lot, it is here.
The ARC invites prospective homeowners and developers to view a variety of existing homes and vacant lots throughout the community. Through this review, you can gain an understanding of the building and landscaping standards involved.
We additionally encourage you to contact HOA staff with any questions you might have. There are many architects, builders and site engineers familiar with Geneva National’s standards. Once you choose the builder that’s right for you, the ARC will be your guide to building a home that meets your needs and adheres to the community guidelines.
For more information on making your dreams a reality, please contact the HOA office at 262-245-9759 or visit genevanational.com/community.

The Geneva National Security Team Wears Many Hats
The security and peace of mind that Geneva National offers residents and their guests is unique from most other communities in southeastern Wisconsin.
Our security team members not only act as greeters and ensure safety, but also provide help to residents and visitors alike. Often the first contact with guests, the team provides passes and gives directions, acting as goodwill ambassadors for the community.
The team controls the ingress and egress of Geneva National at each of two gates 24/7/365 days a year, and observes and reports incidents and rule violations. As part of their mobile service, they report suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities and relay any hazardous road conditions to the Geneva National HOA, which then prompts services such as snow plowing.
Additionally, team members receive CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training, giving important life-saving backup to our pool lifeguards.
To further ensure safety, the security team monitors traffic following established policies. Speed limits are set to protect pedestrians, dog walkers and children. If distracted drivers weave on the road, security will stop the offenders for the safety of the driver and others.
Other security services include resident wellness checks coordinated with the HOA, and acting as a point of contact for lost and found items, including pets. Notify security of any extended absences and they will note anything unusual with the property.
Security works closely with the Town of Geneva Police Department and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. Along with Elkhorn area fire department and emergency medical technicians, the team stays responsive to emergencies, keeping our community safe.
In 2017, Geneva National residents realized a greater level of security with the completion of the HOA building, which houses a firetruck on the premises for quick response times and lower homeowners insurance premiums due to its proximity.
Our security team is here to help, and is dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of all residents and visitors in our beautiful community.
In emergencies, please call 911 first. To reach security 24/7/365 days a year, please call 262-245-3333. Please email visitor authorizations to gngateaccess@gmail.com.
