Casting Call - Get hooked on our fishing

Whether it’s pulling trophy Coho salmon, Chinook salmon or lake trout from a boat on Lake Michigan or leisurely trying for panfish from an inland lake, Racine County is a terrific destination for fishing enthusiasts.

• Lake Michigan – Of the more than 300 miles of its shoreline, the 25 miles in the Racine vicinity are a “sweet spot” for sport fishing that produce 38% of all fish caught on charter boats in the state of Wisconsin. A good way to try Lake Michigan fishing is through Fishing Charters of Racine, an association of 11 licensed charter captains. Visit great-lakes.org/wi/fish-racine.

Winding through parts of Racine and Mount Pleasant, this river is renowned for fly fishing as large trout and salmon make their way upstream to spawn during the spring and fall.

Located in the western part of the county through parts of Waterford, Rochester and Burlington, this scenic stream holds walleye, bass, catfish and a variety of panfish.

While our great lake is the star of the fishing show, don’t overlook Browns, Eagle and Wind lakes for walleye, bass and bluegill.

BEACH HAPPY North Beach

A short walk from Downtown Racine and the marinas, North Beach, 100 Kewaunee St., is wildly popular among residents and visitors alike as THE place to catch some waves and rays in the summertime. Is this your first time at the shoreline? Here’s what you need to know before you hit the beach.

A Blue Wave First

North Beach became the first Wisconsin beach to earn the Blue Wave Beach designation from the National Clean

Beaches Council in 2004. Since then, it has made lots of national lists, including Top 5 Best Freshwater Beach (USA Today), Top 10 Family Friendly Beach (Parents magazine) and Top City Beach (Midwest Living magazine).

Amenities and Accessibility

You can enjoy a snack or beverage, and catch live music under the palm trees at the Beachside Oasis during the summer months. A community of volunteers built

the adjacent Kids’ Cove nautical-themed playground. A wheelchair-accessible walkway extends across the sand to the water’s edge. Free parking

General Safety Rules

To keep the beach safe for everyone, North Beach has a few safety guidelines for patrons:

• Pets (excluding service animals) are not permitted on the beach.

• No motorboats, windsurfers or floating devices (i.e., water wings, inner tubes, rafts) are allowed in the protected swim area.

• Keep the lifeguard chairs, boats and rescue boards free from obstructions. With over 50 acres of beautifully groomed sand and water, and 2,500 feet of shoreline, there is plenty of sand to spread out!

• Motorized vehicles, alcoholic beverages (except within the Oasis area), glass containers and fire pits are not allowed on the beach.

For more information on lifeguard operating hours, daily water conditions and more details on North Beach, visit cityofracine.org.

WRIGHT OVER HERE

Historic architecture calls Racine County home

SC Johnson Administration Building –

In 1936, third generation SC Johnson leader H.F. Johnson Jr. sought out the architect Frank Lloyd Wright to create an innovative headquarters building for the international consumer products company. The SC Johnson Administration Building, which opened in 1939, is celebrated as one of the top 25 buildings of the 20th century. Its Great Workroom, supported by a series of unique, concrete dendriform columns, is truly a work of art. The adjacent, 15-story Wrightdesigned Research Tower, opened in 1950, is constructed on the cantilever principle off a center core.

Also on the SC Johnson headquarters campus is the Golden Rondelle Theater, originally built as the company’s pavilion for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. Today, the building continues to function as a theatre for both company and public events. Visitors to SC Johnson can arrange to view the Academy Award-winning film “To Be Alive!” and the documentary “Carnaúba: A Son’s Memoir,” which tells a remarkable story of family and adventure. The headquarters campus tour also includes Hall, which houses a replica of a Sikorsky S-38 amphibious aircraft, the SC Johnson

Gallery: At Home with Frank Lloyd Wright, a Wright library and a gift shop. 1525 Howe St., Racine. Tours are free and open to the public. For more information, visit scjohnson.com/visit, 262-260-2154.

Wingspread – H.F. Johnson Jr. commissioned Wright to build Wingspread, a 14,000-square-foot Prairie-style home, which was completed in 1939. The home was occupied by Johnson and his wife, Irene Purcell, and his two children, Karen and Sam. In 1959, the property was converted into a conference center, now known as The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread, 33 E. Four Mile Road, Wind Point. Tours are free and open to the public. For more information, visit scjohnson.com/visit, 262-681-3353.

The DeKoven Center – Immerse yourself in history at DeKoven Center, a stunning collection of Gothic Cream City brick buildings dating back to the 1850s. Originally an Episcopalian boys' college, it's one of

the oldest intact 19th-century college quadrangles remaining in North America. This 11-acre campus boasts a beautiful view overlooking Lake Michigan and features charming, historic English-style gardens scattered throughout the grounds. Today, DeKoven Center offers a unique venue for a variety of events, from unforgettable weddings and joyous celebrations to enriching retreats, conferences and educational classes. 2000 Wisconsin Ave, Racine. dekovencenter.org, 262-633-6401.

EXPLORE WILDLIFE

Unique animals & exciting events

Located along the sandy shores of Lake Michigan just north of Downtown Racine, the Racine Zoo is home to some of the most remarkable and endangered wildlife. Racine Zoo is one of only 237 zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and is held to the highest standards in the world. Each year more than 140,000 guests visit the Zoo’s beautiful campus. Visitors can feed giraffes, take a ride on the Zoo Choo Express, visit the PlayZoo playground, feed the birds in the aviary, and brush goats in the barnyard. The walk is easy for all ages, making it a great place to explore with the family.

Unique Animals at Racine Zoo

The Zoo, established in 1923, cares for over 75 different animal species and over 300 individual animals from Wisconsin and around the world. Observe African lions, an Amur tiger, eastern black rhinos, a sun bear, wallaroos, orangutans, penguins, meerkats, spider monkeys, zebras, and many more extraordinary animals.

The Zoo’s unique animals require special daily care, and it takes a lot to run a zoo and keep the animals fed! Did you know it costs $75 to feed the Zoo’s goats and sheep for one week? $100 will feed the Amur tiger for 1 week. $25 will cover vitamins for the primates for one month. $50 will buy the carnivores bones for one month. Racine Zoo uses 1,500 bales of hay per year, 2,600 pounds of carrots per year and 15,000 pounds of meat per year! The giraffes alone eat over 70 pounds of food per day.

Inspiring Wildlife Conservation

The Racine Zoo is involved in many international, national, and local conservation initiatives including the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Frog Watch USA, Seafood Watch, and others. The Zoo spreads awareness through outreach programs and events, including Zoorific Saturdays which highlight special animals or topics, and are great for guests to get inspired with fun activities on campus.

The Conservation Education Department offers many popular programs including Summer Camp, Spring Break Camp, preschool programs, and school programs designed to spread a positive message about nature and wildlife conservation. Camps include up-close encounters with animals, daily crafts, snacks, and hands-on learning about wildlife and the environment. From feeding giraffes to meeting zookeepers, each day is full of fun and adventure. You can even book birthday parties! It’s bound to be a wild time!

Exciting Zoo Events

The Racine Zoo hosts over 50 events annually along with private parties and weddings. Be sure to check out the full list of events and programs online at racinezoo.org.

DOG - GONE FUN

Want to know where to toss that ball and let go of the leash? Check out the county’s dog parks: Island Dog Park, 1700 Liberty St. and N. Owen Davies Dog Park in the 1700 block of West Blvd., Racine; Karen Nelson Memorial Dog Park, 3533 Northwestern Ave., Mount Pleasant; Johnson Dog Park, 4649 WI-38 Trunk, Caledonia; Jean M. Jacobson Dog Park, 310 S. Rochester St., and Burlington Dog Park, 480 Calumet St., Burlington; American Legion Memorial Park, 700 Main St., Union Grove and Off Broadway Dog Park, 8500 Broadway St., Sturtevant.

Fancy going out on the town and want Fido looking his or her bow-wow best? There are a vast array of groomers in the area to choose from. Once your pup has had his or her “trans-fur-mation” at the groomers, head out to Freddie’s Friki Tiki Bar outside the Corner House on the Lake for a drink and some chow. Other pawsome places to grab a bite and drink without leaving your “furry child” at home are: Reefpoint Brewhouse, O&H (on Durand Ave.), Wilson’s Coffee & Tea, Gyros Express, Panera, Blue Bear, The Grind and Divino Gelato. All locations are weather permitting as they are for outdoor seating only.

After your time on the town, you can let sleeping dogs lie in one of the many pet-friendly hotels/motels. Burlington has AmericInn Lodge & Suites and Skyview Motel. In Sturtevant you’ll find Waterford’s Baymont Inn & Suites and in the Mount Pleasant/Racine area, you can snooze with your pup at America’s Best Value Inn & Suites, Delta Hotel by Marriott, My Place Hotels or the Comfort Inn. Or, if you prefer camping, Cliffside Park in Racine and Jellystone in Caledonia are fine options as well.

If you’d fancy your pooch have his or her own bed, consider the many comfortable kennels and doggie spas in the area. Windy Knolls Kennels, LLC, Franksville; Caledonia; Playmate Kennels & Stables, Union Grove; and Paddington’s Pals Pet Sitting, Dale Creek Gundogs, Nite Wind’s Kennels and The Royal Canine, all in Burlington. Racine offers Angelcare Pet Resort; The Woof-Dog Daycare & Boarding; Katie’s Canine Klubhouse; The Pet Parlor, LLC; and Woofdorf-Astoria Dog Hotel & Day Spa

Dog birthday parties and Pet Walk Racine-Kenosha 2025, scheduled for Aug. 2 at Pets Park, are just a few of the ways you can support our local branch of the Wisconsin Humane Society, located at 8900 16th St., Mount Pleasant. This branch offers many other wonderful opportunities for the community all year long, that include: adoption, vaccine clinics, spay/ neuter programming, wildlife rehab, summer camps for kids, birthday parties, events and fundraisers.

RIVER BEND NATURE CENTER

BREW TO YOU Unique drink experiences

Here in Wisconsin, there are few things we love more than getting together with friends and family over a cold beer. Fortunately, in Racine County, there are plenty of beer enjoyment opportunities to be found at seasonal beer gardens, craft breweries and special events.

Franksville Craft Beer Garden is a community gathering spot at Franksville Memorial Park, 9614 Northwestern Ave., Caledonia. Open on weekends from May into October, the beer garden offers 16 craft and specialty brews made in Wisconsin.

AEppelTreow Distillery and Winery, 1072 288th St., Burlington, produces dozens of specialty ciders, wines and spirits from apples and other fruits from adjacent orchards.

Two newer breweries are located in the heart of downtown Burlington. The Runaway Nanopub and Microbrewery, 109 E. Chestnut, Burlington, is a single-room micropub and nanobrewery serving handcrafted, small-batch beer and delivers Burlington foodie favorites like Fred’s World-Famous Burgers right to your table.

Just around the corner from The Runaway is the Low Daily Taproom, 700 N. Pine St., Burlington. The space includes a large beer garden that looks out onto Echo Lake and an interior that welcomes you with a cozy but modern vibe.

Waterford Stillhouse, 228 E. Main St., Waterford, is a family-owned and operated microdistillery. Stop in to try one of their many fun cocktails that uses their own bourbon or vodka.
