The Nanyue Pavilion Collection – An Odyssey Three Decades in the Making.
Figure 1: detail from an early Qing painting of the Elegant Gathering in the Western Garden, a key event in Chinese art history said to have taken place in the year 1088, to be offered Nov.2020
“ t is perhaps fitting that this unique collection should be offered in London, the city where many of these works have been acquired and enjoyed. I hope also that the entry of the Nanyue Pavilion collection onto the market will inspire a new generation of collectors to discover the field which has brought me so much pleasure over the years”.
I
The words of the collector behind the Nanyue Pavilion collection (hereafter NPC) hint at the richness of the collection, but the ways in which the NPC records the changes and developments in both the scholarly understanding and market appreciation of Contemporary Ink require further unpacking. Some of the earliest additions to the collection were calligraphic. These include calligraphic works by CENG YOUHE (Tseng Yu-ho, Betty Ecke, (1924 – 2017) [lots 58, 71] and HUANG MIAOZI (1913 – 2012) [lots 39, 40]. As well as being an artist, Tseng Yu-ho was an important art historian and educator, married to the famous Chinese furniture scholar Gustav Ecke, and she was good friends with Michael Sullivan who made significant contributions to the study of 20th Century Chinese ink painting. Huang Miaozi, who studied under Deng Erya (1884 – 1954), worked as a cartoonist in 1930s Shanghai, later spending much time in Australia. His work was
recognised by the British Museum exhibition, Brushes with Surprise: The Art of Calligraphy in Modern China, London, 2002, which had a profound impact on the development of the NPC. One of the first international exhibitions dedicated to contemporary ink, it was par ticularly daring in tackling the field of Chinese calligraphy which it made accessible to a Western audience by introducing contemporary ar tists expanding the remit of calligraphic expressive potential through an openness to Western abstraction and by challenging the structural conventions of calligraphic art. The current sale includes four teen works from five ar tists represented in the exhibition: HUANG MIAOZI (1913 – 2012) [lots 39, 40], GU GAN (1942 –) [lots 30, 31, 41], WEI LIGANG (1964 –) [lot 76], ZHANG DAWO (1943 –)[lots 7, 21, 73] and WANG DONGLING (1945 –) [lots 5, 20, 48, 84, 85]. Interestingly these artists all fall into the two most radical categories of artists the curator uses to categorise the ar tists for the exhibition, “The Modernists” and “The Avant-Garde”, and a penchant for the radical, the experimental and the unique is a hallmark of the NPC. And yet, central to the whole philosophy of the Ink Movement has been an indebtedness to Chinese tradition. This was a point made by the 2010-11 exhibition, Fresh Ink: Ten Takes on Chinese Tradition, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The exhibition commissioned ten leading ink artists to respond to
works already in the museum’s collection, thereby making the point that ink painters’ artistic practice is deeply rooted in its connection to the past. Two of these artists are represented in the NPC, LI JIN (1958 –) [lots 13, 53, 54] and QIN FENG (1961 –) [lots 25, 45, 46]. Both artists may be considered to have the literati spirit: Li Jin is considered the preeminent figure within the New Literati Movement and Qin Feng an avant-garde figure, both channelling the historic association between ar t creation, celebration, drinking and feasting [figure 1:]. Whilst these two artists may claim to possess the ‘literati spirit’, the collection also includes more traditional ink landscapes indicative of ‘literati technique’. LI XUBAI (1940 –) [lots 1, 2, 3, 90, 91] has been an enduring figure among contemporary literati painters for his imaginary poetic landscapes. Other traditional landscape painters include the Nanjing school artists, SHI BANGHE (1951 –) [lots 49, 50, 51, 52] and ZHU DAOPING (1949 –) [lot 65] and London and Beijing based painter WANG JIANAN (1955 –) [lots 12, 58]. The collection is also highly sensitive to the complex intertwining of the different artistic movements in Chinese ink painting which have stretched across the 20th Century. These were set out in the exhibition, Modern Chinese Ink Paintings, at the British Museum, London in 2012. The selection of works here situated contemporary artists’ output

more widely. This has included the embracing of abstraction and the willingness to explore the boundaries of the calligraphic frame (QIU ZHIJIE (1969 –) [lot 79], GU WENDA (1955 –) [lot 44], LI JUNYI (Lee Chun–yi, 1965 –) [lot 11] and WANG DONGLING (1945 –) [lots 5, 20, 48, 84, 85]). It has included the questioning of meaning and cultural knowledge (GU WENDA (1955 –) [lot 44], HONG HAO (1965 –) [lots 26, 27, 28, 29]), the application of ink in new ways including the ‘fissuring’ of the painted surface (QIU DESHU (1948 –) [lots 17, 18, 82], printing (GU WENDA (1955 –) [lot 44]) and LI JUNYI (Lee Chun-yi, 1965 –) [lot 11]), playing with the temporal elements of ink (QIU ANXIONG (1972 –) [lot 78]) and exploring the limitations of paper, through painting with burn marks (WANG TIANDE (1960 –) [lot 83]) or by transforming ink into a digital form (QIU ANXIONG (1972 –) [lot 78]) or using ink to support work in other media or working across media (ZHANG HUAN (1965 –) [lots 23, 87, 88, 89].
Figure 2: LIU GUOSONG (1932 –). Moon. ink and colour on paper, 82 x 60cm. Sold for £37,500, November 2019
within a wider ar t historical context of 20th Century Chinese ink painting, part of an evolving and rooted series of movements and schools both within China and through the Chinese diaspora. Whilst WANG TIANDE (1960 –) [lot 82] developed his distinctive style within mainland China, LUO QING (Lo Ch’ing, 1948 –) [lot 81, 92] combined painting with poetry from his base in Taiwan. The legacy of others in the exhibition includes not only their own output but the achievement of their students. LI JUNYI (Lee Chun-yi, 1965 –) [lot 11] studied with Liu Guosong (1932 –) [figure 2], founder of the Fifth Moon Group in Taiwan, just as WANG WUXIE (Wucius Wong, 1936 –) [lot 10] studied under Lui ShouKwan (1919 – 1975) [figure 3]. One dimension in which the NPC has taken pride has been championing the works of female artists. The collection is strong in works by female calligraphers CENG YOUHE (Tseng Yu-ho, Betty Ecke, 1924 – 2017) [lots 58, 71], DONG YANGZI (Tong Yangtze (Grace Tong), 1942 –) [lots 9, 36, 37] and CHEN XINGWAN (Chen Hsing-wan, 1951 – 2004) [lots 4, 34, 35, 55, 75]. Other artists form par t of an ar tistic power couple. YANG YANPING (1934 –) [lots 8, 42] often exhibits alongside her husband Zeng Shanqing (1932 – 2020) whilst LU QING (1964 –) [lots 19, 67] and CAI JIN (1965 –) [lot 56] have struck their own paths distinct from their artist husbands, respectively Ai Weiwei (1957 –) and Xu Bing (1955 –).The NPC also includes a number of younger generation female ar tists including GU YONGHUI (Fay Ku, 1974 –) [lot 86] and LI TINGTING (1982 –) [lots 59, 60]. But beyond gender politics the NPC has been fundamentally interested in the ways in which its ar tists have pushed the boundaries of Ink Ar t, drawing connections between Ink Art, Conceptual art, Installation art and Chinese Contemporary Art
Most recent curatorial scholarship also fleshed out the central position of Ink Ar t within Chinese Contemporary Ar t. Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2013-14 shows a shared interest in exploring Chinese ink conceptually beyond the confines of its use on paper, encompassing works where ink is painted, printed, projected and daubed on the body. It included the works of the artists GU WENDA (1955 –) [lot 44], QIU ZHIJIE (1969 –) [lot 79], ZHANG HUAN (1965 –) [lots 23, 87, 88, 89], WANG TIANDE (1960 –) [lot 83], QIU ANXIONG (1972 –) [lot 78], WANG DONGLING (1945 –) [lots 5, 20, 48, 84, 85] and HONG HAO (1965 –) [lots 26, 27, 28, 29]. By placing the Ink Ar t movement within theoretical frameworks drawn from Contemporary Art it laid the way for the 2017-18 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World, showcasing works of GU WENDA (1955 –) [lot 44], QIU ZHIJIE (1969 –) [lot 79] and other Ink ar tists alongside other contemporary ar tists to highlight ink painting’s central position within a holistic vision of Contemporary Chinese Art. Scholarship in Ink Ar t has clearly developed significantly in recent years and has been supported over the last decade by a more intense commercial focus on Contemporary Ink. There has been an Ink Art Fair dedicated to the medium in Hong Kong since 2015 and Sotheby’s and Christie’s have offered sales in this category in Hong Kong from 2012 and 2013 respectively with Sotheby’s presenting the Origo Collection in 2016, all providing fur ther focus on the medium. These trends build on the decades of hard work by a number of dedicated dealers active in the field including, but not limited to, Hanar t, Kaikado, Michael Goedhuis, Eskanazi and Ethan Cohen.

caught pace with the earlier doyennes of 20th Century ink painting, nor yet with most valuable artworks of Contemporary Chinese Art. The prescient and in many ways instinctive understanding of the art historical significance of Ink Art which has underpinned the formation of the NPC presents an opportunity for the scholar and the collector alike. Whilst the sale ends one collector’s personal journey with this group of works, the Odyssey of Chinese contemporary ink paintings continues… Lazarus Halstead Head of Asian Art Chiswick Auctions
The Nanyue Pavilion Collection encodes decades of collecting and connoisseurship within the field of contemporary ink painting but it also provides an opportunity for old and new collectors to access the leading artists for the first time on the London auction market, as well as some emerging ar tists and those artists whose contribution to the canon is ripe for reassessment. We are lucky that the collection is entering the market at a time when the price points of Ink Art are still widely accessible and they have not yet

Born in Shanghai, Qiu Deshu developed a method of artmaking he called “fissuring”, which involves using traditional Chinese mounting techniques to build up layers of paper, which are painted with ink. This piece is a rare early example of the technique. He is best known for founding the Caocao (Grass Grass) Group. He is profiled in Joan Lebold Cohen (1987) in her landmark book The New Chinese Painting: 1949-1986 who tentatively describes him as “the outstanding painter and theoretician of his generation”.

One of Hong Hao’s most important works, Selected Scriptures is a series of thirty-seven prints encompassing maps, martial strategy, sacred cave temples, and the human body. Conceived to imitate pages from a traditional woodblock-printed book, the work imagines a new ‘encyclopaedia’ to create order in an ever-changing word. Hong’s images resemble ancient classics, but are filled with intentional errors and misrepresentations offering humour and commentary on the contemporary world. The series was included in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York exhibition, Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China, 2013-14. 28

89 ZHANG HUAN (1965 –). 张洹 Untitled, Ink on paper, 119 x 80cm, Executed in 2006. £1,500 – 2,000
This work relates to Zhang Huan’s donkey period. His 2004 work Window comprised of nine photographs taken of the artist crouched beside a donkey in often startling positions and in a state of undress. His 2005 work Donkey presents a taxidermy sculpture of a donkey mounting a model of the famous Jin Mao tower in Shanghai in what might be considered a romantic encounter. The work has been read as a complex allegory of Chinese ambition. This ink study, painted after the original work had been completed, demonstrates the potential of ink, through the duplicated forms in monochrome with shadows indicative of movement, to give a graphic voice to Zhang’s vision.

The blending of Lo Ch’ing’s lively painting style with his own original poetry make a true heir to the traditions of Chinese literati painting. The poem included here is transcribed thus: 金黃的弦月高掛天空, 所有我蕉林都彎腰膜拜, 向那純美無瑕的彎度行最敬禮,
and may be translated: High above the moon reclines, a golden crescent form, Banana trees below, bowed heads in deference conform, To praise its pure and flawless curves, Which they themselves help to preserve, On every branch the fruit adorn.
並全心全意以心中所結的串串香蕉來模倣讚美 弦月的美學。
