1st-3rd August: Type on Paper at the Tabard Theatre 7th & 28th August: Free cookery classes in Chiswick Ben is trying to write a play. Unfortunately, as soon as he starts typing, his protagonist won’t stop arguing with him. And he’s not a fan of the material. His protagonist is Miles, a politician with ambition and a long-suffering aide in Sophie.
After Ben has Miles run for party leader, Ben runs into writer’s block. He thinks he’s found the solution, but pretty soon the play he’s trying to finish takes a very different turn to the one he started. Meticulously funny and highly imaginative, Type On Paper is the story of one person’s struggle to understand why he is the way he is. The play previewed to much acclaim at new writing nights at the Theatre Deli and the Old Sorting Office earlier in 2019. Now the Tabard Theatre presents the first full production of Adam Highland’s original play, directed by Tallulah Sheffield and 6

This month Kitchen Joy in Chiswick will be holding two free pop-up cookery classes for Londoners looking to upskill in the kitchen while also saving on waste, money and the planet. The workshops will showcase simple ways to help save the planet for those too busy to spend hours in the kitchen. Run by the Small Change, Big Difference campaign, the classes are aimed at reducing the tonnes of food that goes to waste from Londoners’ homes every year, and will inspire participants with delicious, quick and easy recipes to make the most of items loitering in fridges and store cupboards and ensure nothing goes to waste. The expert chefs running the workshops are all passionate about food and improving the health of both people and planet; so
16th August: SummerChime Global superstar Liam Payne will perform his first UK headline show of the year at the inaugural SummerChime – a spectacular evening of music hosted by national children’s charity, Children with Cancer UK. Participants can book the free workshops via Eventbrite, paying a fully refundable £10 deposit as part of the sign-up process. If you missed the show the first time round or would like to catch it again, now’s your chance, but remember there are only TWO opportunities to see it before the production transfers to the Edinburgh Fringe. His mother, wanting answers, decides to contact her son’s killer, bringing them face to face, with remarkable consequences.
Taking place on 16 August, SummerChime is named in recognition of the celebratory moment every child with cancer looks forward to experiencing – the chiming of the end of treatment bell. Liam Payne says: “The lifesaving work that Children with Cancer UK do is invaluable and I’m honoured to be performing at the first ever SummerChime concert.” Tickets are strictly limited, so grab yourself a place at what promises to be one of the biggest family parties of the summer, as some of the UK’s most exciting stars share the stage for a fantastic night of music.
20th-24th August: Harbor at the Tabard Theatre Following the success of Luca Kavner’s Fish Eye, SWL Fringe (South West London’s budding amateur dramatics company) is happy to be back at the Tabard Theatre this summer with Chad Beguelin’s Harbor. Tony Award-nominee Chad Beguelin tells the story of two newlyweds, Kevin (Douglas Coghlan) and Ted (Nicholas Gauci), who live in an affluent subset of the Hamptons. When Kevin’s fifteenyear-old niece, Lottie (Constance Des Marais), and her ne’er-do-well mother, Donna ( Jessica Napier), drop in unannounced on the couple’s beautiful Sag Harbor home, all hell breaks loose. The bonds between kith and kin are tested in this alternately biting and touching comedy about the constantly shifting nature of the meaning of family. Shows are 14+ and start at 19:30 and tickets cost £15 (conc. £8). Visit tabardtheatre.co.uk to book.

CHAS - the home of Chiswick gardeners
By Áine McGinty
For part of this month’s local life, we speak to Charlotte Kimpton from the Chiswick Horticultural & Allotment Society.
T
he CHAS is still going strong now having been formed over 100 years ago as the Chiswick Allotment Holders Association in 1915. The charity aims to promote and further the art, science and practice of horticulture. It is run entirely by local volunteers, from the committee to the trading hut. They organise events, shows, talks, tours and parties, as well as running a weekly Trading Hut where members can buy everything needed for gardening at lower prices than commercial garden centres and they work hard to encourage local residents to take up and enjoy gardening. Part of this comes from the two shows the Society holds each year where novices or seasoned gardeners young or old are encouraged to exhibit a range of produce, including their flowers, vegetables, fruit, cakes, chutneys and photos. You don’t have to be an expert to win an award as they include a category for the most miss-shappen vegetable! Their Summer Show in June which was presented by Rick Stein was a huge success with one attendee quoted as saying it was ‘‘one of the best in living memory ’’ and they are hoping for similar success with September’s Autumn Show.
The Autumn Show takes place on Sunday, 8 September and anyone is welcome to enter the various classes at the shows with entry costing just 25p! There are various classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, baking & preserves and art & photography - plenty of opportunities to show your horticultural, culinary and artistic skills, as well as special classes for children. There will be a barbecue open to all from 12:30 as well as delicious teas and cakes, tombola, produce auction and much more. Much of their focus goes to encouraging young people to enjoy and take up the hobby of gardening and they have a good relationship with local schools which enables them to do this. This year, they have gifted plants to Chiswick School for their allotment and the creation of a sensory herb garden on the school grounds and are regularly on hand for any advice they might need. In addition, in March 2019, they awarded the winners (Grove Park Primary School) of their 2018 Centenary Plate Competition, a gardening competition amongst Chiswick Schools. As part of the competition, the First Prize winner is presented with the CHAS Centenary Plate - a huge, 100-year-old decorative bronze plate to display in their school for a year. The Centenary Plate was donated to CHAS in 2015 by Everard Whitehouse to celebrate their 100th anniversary. The Centenary Plate Competition is open to all Chiswick schools and the CHAS provides support to those entering by contributing free seeds, bulbs, compost and active, hands-on advice and assistance. Any schools who wish to participate in the 2019 competition should contact John Gill: schools@growchiswick.org.
14
THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | August 2019
The CHAS also organise various talks throughout the year for both members and non-members to head along to. The subject matters and speakers vary - from a visit from a Palestiniann olive tree farmer to a talk on bee-keeping or irrigation systems, there’s something for everyone. The Trading Hut is open most Sundays (never on the first Sunday of the month) from 10:00 to 12:30. Not only is this an opportunity for local people to buy plants or things for their garden, but it can be a place to come for advice or to meet like minded locals. Members can purchase gardening products at a discount below normal retail prices. In season, they also sell quality seed potatoes, garlic, spring bulbs, bedding plants and many popular and unusual plants.
Membership of the CHAS costs just £8 a year. The Society provides its members with a weekly newsletter, free advice, seeds, bulbs, fertiliser, compost and tools at a lower cost than commercial garden centres. If you wish to find out more about the CHAS or would like to become a member or volunteer, visit growchiswick.org

Chiswick House & Gardens recognised as one of the UK’s very best green spaces
THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | chiswickmagazine.co.uk
T
his international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
One quote from the report from the judges stated: “This Green Flag is well deserved. The staff and volunteers are a huge asset to their community and should be recognised as such by the local authority.”
Caroline Busby, CHGT Interim Director said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the first time. It is a real testament to the hard work and dedication of the gardeners, volunteers, Gavin Jones and the whole estate staff. We know how much the estate means to Chiswick residents and visitors and this award celebrates the work put in to maintain the estate to such a high standard.”
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”
Chiswick House is an 18th century villa set in classically landscaped gardens in west London. One of the earliest and finest examples of neoclassical architecture in the UK, the house was designed from 1727-29 by Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington and 4th Earl of Cork, and his associate the painter, gardener and architect, William Kent. Both the house and its gardens are Grade 1 listed and the villa itself is a scheduled ancient monument.
The Chiswick House Kitchen Garden project began in February 2005 as a voluntary group dedicated to reviving the gardens and teaching local residents about horticulture and growing food. Chiswick House and Gardens Trust are cultivating the garden as a community and educational resource and as a thriving kitchen garden. Workshops are run for school children and the community garden is offered for therapeutic horticulture. The Trust is very grateful for the help of the volunteers.
Local Life
Chiswick House and Gardens has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world. The estate is among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world, that received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.
In April 2017, the house and gardens were united under one management for the first time in almost 70 years.
Chiswick House & Gardens Trust is a registered charity, created jointly by English Heritage and the London Borough of Hounslow. The Trust is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of this outstanding Grade I listed villa and registered Grade I gardens, which have been enjoyed as a public park since 1929. There will be a Kitchen Garden Open Day on Sunday, 1 September from 11.00 – 15.00.

Dogs of Chiswick By Katie Saunders
D
ogs are known as man’s best friend, due to their close relations, loyalty and companionship, and they really are all of that. Millions of single people, couples and families make the decision to find a puppy they like and collect their fur baby and take them home and care for them. They become part of the family and are so loved and appreciated all over the world. In recent years it’s become popular to create an Instagram page for your dog, so others can admire them too. There are so many different breeds, all having their own special characteristics and quirks.
Alongside our love for dogs at The Chiswick Magazine our Doggie photo story came at the perfect time as the 15th Annual Chiswick House Dog Show is on the 22nd September this year. The Show is run by local volunteers for the enjoyment of the whole community and not just for their ‘best friends,’ and their aim is to raise money to maintain and improve Chiswick House Gardens.
I went on the hunt to meet a few dogs from Chiswick. I approached a couple of owners and their dogs and I teamed up with Good Boy Coffee in Turnham Green to meet some locals. I arrived nice and early at 8am on a Monday morning in July. It was a quiet day but I met several regulars; Moose, a beautiful grey whippet, Alphonse an adorable speckled sausage dog, and Brody a lovely miniature pinscher and a few others. Their photos and info are featured here.
The 18 classes range from Waggiest Tail to Prettiest Bitch, from My Dog’s Got Talent to Next Top Model, and from Naughtiest Dog to Best Veteran. Enter your dog into one (or more) of the classes: all are welcome - big, small, pedigree, miniature, cross-breed, rescue, naughty – there’s a class for every dog!
Entry is free: it’s a fun day out for all the family – and you don’t have to own a dog to come along!
This year we are celebrating 50 years since the moon landings. Those entering the Fancy Dress competition (for adults/dogs/children) will have plenty of opportunity to let their imaginations run free. There will be an even wider-than-usual variety of food stalls, as well as BBQ, beer and wine bars, plus a Fun and Games Arcade for the children.
It takes over 150 volunteers to run the Dog Show, so if you would like to volunteer to help please email volunteer@chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk To find out more about the Dog Show, please visit the website at www.chiswickhousedogshow.org.uk Sunday 22nd September 2017, 11 am to 4.30 pm, Cricket Pitch (Staveley Road entrance), Chiswick House & Gardens.

Villa di Geggiano Tuscan fine dining in Chiswick
By Áine McGinty
Villa di Geggiano, Chiswick’s much-loved Italian restaurant is the perfect place to go for a touch of Tuscany without actually leaving the country although the weather might not always be quite as good…
W
hatever the weather, the food is impressive, the wine is to die for and the history intriguing.
Many of you will of course remember Villa di Geggiano coming to Chiswick in 2015 but its Tuscan namesake has been the family home and winery of the Bianchi Bandinelli family since 1527. The impressive Palazzo, located just outside of Siena in Tuscany, Italy, is, like its London outpost, renowned for its beautiful architecture, gracious hospitality and delicious food. ‘‘We didn’t just pick our name out of a hat,’’ says Lukasz Borowski, the general manager. This is a place with history and the influence on its Chiswick counterpart is undeniable. The family in Italy are proud to play a significant role in the essence that pervades the Chiswick restaurant. This is evident upon entering the Lounge area where you can see their family photos and keepsakes. Their dogs even take pride of place at the front gate - in statuary anyway. Those of you with your own dogs will understand that when your four-legged friend is considered family, a night out without them can feel like there’s someone missing but there’s no need to worry about that here. In true Italian spirit, the extended family can enjoy a meal at the Villa!

The food at this local restaurant is exquisitely (although not exclusively) Tuscan, says Lukasz. ‘‘We source the finest ingredients to create delicious Rusticana dishes imbued with a touch of elegance.’’ Many of their ingredients are imported into the UK from their Tuscan villa - they even have a ‘truffle man’ who comes all the way from Siena with the finest local truffles! Wine is of course just as important as food in Villa di Geggiano which is no surprise considering Italy produces about 20% of the world’s wine. Surrounded by vineyards, the Italian Villa has a history of exporting mouth-watering wines to England – having been possibly the very first to bring Chianti here in 1725. The delicious vino produced at the vineyards is brought to Chiswick and available to take away or if you decide to order over two cases, can be delivered to your doorstep! These Tuscan food & drink flavours come with a degree of responsibility, something very important to a lot of diners. Villa di Geggiano go to great lengths to ensure the highest quality of their raw materials, matched by the highest standards of balanced, ecological, sustainable – and where possible, traditional – methods of production.
Main Feature
Chiswick’s Villa boasts a wide range of spaces to dine, drink and socialise. The cosy Lounge mentioned earlier is the perfect hideaway with its candlelit intimacy making it the ideal spot for date night. The main Dining Room has a stunning centrepiece and the Gallery is a smaller, quieter private dining room surrounded by racks bursting with wine and walls hung with watercolours. The Art Room features an ever-changing installation of works by resident and visiting artists - staying true to Tuscany’s Villa di Geggiano’s support of creativity and culture - in fact many international artists have spent their summers there in search of inspiration. W4’s Villa isn’t just a spot for artists, it now plays host to off-site meetings in their recently opened work space, The Suite. These spaces offer complete privacy in a professional environment. The Suite also boasts extraordinary art, comfortable seating, and a fully-featured boardroom. If catering is required, the ‘cucina’ or kitchen is just a few steps away. Their spacious restaurant terrace is built from Tuscan wood beams and shaded by Sangiovese vines to provide an authentic Tuscan ambience. ‘‘Eating ‘Al Fresco’ was invented in Italy, so we’re delighted to recreate that space in W4,’’ adds Lukasz. There truly is a dining room for every mood and every occasion. Pop along with family, friends, pups or colleagues and sample the best of Italy in west London.

St Michael’s Players first performed The Long Road in 2018 and will once again be bringing their award-winning play to W4 just before taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival- the first time the company has performed there. The Long Road is a topical play which deals with the tragic effects of knife crime as well as how humanity and forgiveness can help restore hope and dignity. When 18-yearold Danny is killed in a random stabbing, his family struggle to cope with the senseless loss. His mother, wanting answers, decides to contact his killer bringing them face-to-face with remarkable consequences. The play was written in collaboration with the Synergy Theatre Project and used research conducted in prisons. It explores the ways in which Restorative Justice can help with rehabilitation.
St Michael’s Players’ award-winning production to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe

C
hiswick’s long-standing non-professional theatre company will once again be pushing boundaries and tackling Shelagh Stephenson’s topical and thought-provoking play about the effects of knife crime this month. We speak to Fleur de Henrie Pearce, Publicity and Social Media Manager for St Michael’s Players about their upcoming production.

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | August 2019
Everyone is encouraged to head along to one of the Edinburgh Fringe previews at the St Michael’s Centre in Elmwood Road. Even if you did manage to catch it last year, the staging has changed from April and the performances promise to be even richer and deeper. It could also be a fantastic introduction to the company, ‘‘‘If you’ve never seen a St Michael’s Players’ production before, this would be a phenomenal one to see,’’ says Fleur. Fleur will be performing in this production as well as producing and publicising it. She plays the perpetrator of this awful crime, Emma Price. ‘‘It’s an incredible role to play, I’ve never played a role anywhere near like this part before,’’ adds Fleur. One highlight of the play, Fleur says, is Stephenson’s ability to put the spotlight on every character and explore so powerfully and intricately how they each individually deal with what has happened. Emma is a complex character with many layers - a character you might not expect to sympathise with, but perhaps you might by the end. The company couldn’t predict the fantastic reaction they would get when performing The Long Road the first time around. ‘‘We never really imagined that we would have the response that we did. It is an incredibly different play to anything that St Michael’s has ever done
Arts & Culture
before,’’ says Fleur. It was a risk given the subject matter and style of the plays they usually do but a risk that has certainly paid off. It is completely different to their most recent performances of the colourful Salad Days back in June. St Michael’s Players want to push and challenge themselves and performing The Long Road ensures their audiences are exposed to theatre that resonates with them and teaches them something and not just theatre that can transport you to a magical place. Stephenson’s ‘‘phenomenally written play’’ has been well-received by people who sadly relate to the subject matter, winning The Chris Donovan Trust’s Best Restorative Justice Play 2018. Chris Donovan’s parents, Vi and Ray Donovan set up the Chris Donovan Trust when he was killed in 2001 in an unprovoked attack. St Michael’s Players were shocked when Vi came to see the production. Vi commented afterwards: “I was amazed how true to life this play was, the acting was superb and so accurately reflected the emotions Ray and I experienced at the time.” St Michael’s Players even go one further in helping their audience members gain an understanding of Restorative Justice, what it is and what is has done for people who have lost loved ones in a violent act, organising Q&A sessions after plays with Director Paul Smith and special guests. Guests for the preview shows have not been confirmed just yet but Fleur promises that they will be people who either have an immediate connection to the themes in the play or knowledge of them.

Meet the Artist “We are meaning-makers. We construct our own worlds, consciously or not.”
T
oby Mulligan’s distinctive contemporary figures have won him both critical and public acclaim. He works in a variety of media including charcoal on paper and inks. I first saw Toby’s artwork at Clarendon Fine Art Gallery in Richmond, London, last year. We’ve since met several times over the past month and worked together on life drawings, with me as the model. His studio is inside his home in Ealing. The floor is splattered with paint and his paintings and other works of art rest against walls, drawings are filed away under the desk and under the sofa.
Toby is a remarkable artist, he works quickly and draws with both hands, at the same time. Toby’s always been fascinated by the human form, emotions and bringing them both to life in his work from life drawings and his imagination. His working background was in constructing and building houses before his art took centre stage. Art is what he wanted to succeed in and make a living from. Pictured here are drawings from our sessions and paintings from his collection.
His spontaneous style has developed over many years. When he begins a piece, he does not prepare with sketches or planning, but simply starts to paint or draw, and each work is intuitive, spirited and extraordinary. He uses a wide range of models, but feels that his best work comes from making a connection with the person he paints. Although he does use photographs, his preference is always to paint from life and to form this connection with the model.
A painting of one of his daughters is an outstanding example of how this emotion can transform a work into something out of the ordinary. Entitled ‘About Time’, it was selected for the BP Portrait Award 2012; after hanging in the National Portrait Gallery in London throughout the summer, it is currently in the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Toby was commissioned to paint tennis star Roger Federer in 2014 for the player’s annual charity gala in Geneva, and his work is in private collections around the world, including that in Mick Jagger’s chateau in France. He has made a number of films painting portraits for Winsor and Newton, Liquitex and Cass Art and this year, he has been filmed painting for Sky Arts TV for a forthcoming autumn show. His mantra both as an artist and as a person is simply to be present, paying total attention to the world within and without. He believes we can go out and learn whatever we need, thanks to the information revolution, so there’s no need to go around with a head full of facts and figures. The challenge as he sees it is to be free, clear and “as unfettered by stuff and thinking as the day we were born. Always open, always amazed”.

The Nursery Chiswick author’s new thriller brings 007 to W4
By Áine McGinty
Chiswick resident Asia Mackay’s new thriller The Nursery is out next month. We catch up with Asia to find out more about the book and her life in W4.
T
he Nursery explores the difficulties of life as a working mum- except this mum, Lex Tyler, is an international spy. Lex struggles to balance life with a two-year-old and her task of tracking down and eliminating a traitor in the MI6. The Nursery is the second in the Killing It series. Asia knows all about balancing life as a mother with a busy career, having written her debut novel Killing It whilst on maternity leave. Subverting a male dominated genre with a female lead is a notable feature of the books- and Asia says Lex is just as ruthless and just as well trained as the likes of James Bond. Killing It was first runner-up for Richard and Judy’s Search for a Bestseller 2017 and Asia was also first runner-up for the Comedy Women in Print Prize, she is hoping for similar success with The Nursery. Loosely based on Asia’s own experiences (although not as an assassin!), Asia herself is a working mother living in Chiswick with her husband, four young children and two dogs. They moved to Chiswick 6 years ago whilst Asia was heavily pregnant with their second child having been drawn to the area due to how good it is for children. The fact that Chiswick is such a nice place, Asia says, helps with creativity. She can be found going for a run at Chiswick House to help her work out plot niggles and organise her thoughts.
Some of Asia’s fast-paced thriller is set in Chiswick with locations residents will recognise, including Chiswick Town Hall. The village feel of W4 might not seem like the ideal setting for a thriller but Asia says this is the reason why she chose it. Lex’s dark and gritty life as an assassin where she works out of an unused train platform at Holborn underground station is cleverly juxtaposed with the ‘‘bright bubble of Chiswick.’’ It is no surprise that Chiswick features so heavily ‘‘mostly because it was written here at my kitchen table in Chiswick,’’ says Asia. In fact, both Killing It and The Nursery were written in Chiswick. September is a busy month for Asia, her app Book Forest will also be launching then. Book Forest aims to encourage children to read by providing a means of tracking how many books they have read, hosting a books wish list and giving reading rewards. You can also catch Asia at this year’s Chiswick Book Festival on Monday, 16 September. From 7-8pm, Asia will be discussing ‘Cracking Crime’ with fellow crime writer Deborah O’Connor at Chiswick Library. £5, £3 for Library members - advanced booking required.

Facial of choice:
Vinoperfect Radiance Facial by Caudalie By Katie Saunders Not only is a facial doing good for your skin, they are extremely good for relaxation and your over all feeling of well-being. I came out of the treatment room feeling really relaxed, patched back together and also energised. The facial begins with a Caudalie cleansing step and flows into a sculpting massage which is the highlight of the treatment and extremely relaxing. Essential oils and cold basalt stones are applied during the massage to awaken the luminosity of the complexion. After the cleanse and the massage the radiance peeling mask is applied for a gentle peel to restore your complexion and bring back its radiance and glow. To finish off, the facial ends with a Vinoperfect serum, this serum can be purchased and used daily to help with pigmentation issues. My sister joined me at the hotel for that weekend away and she suffers from a darker tone on her upper lip, it appeared out of nowhere and she’s been looking for something to help. The lovely spa staff have had personal results from using it and really recommended this product if any product was to be bought to help with this.
I enjoyed a few days break away at The Cornwall Hotel and Spa a few weeks back and I had a facial from one of my favourite skincare brands, Caudalie. The Vinoperfect Radiance Facial. I did a little research and found out that you can have this treatment very locally, at The Cove Spa just off Chiswick High Road, so there is no need to take a 5 hour drive to the other side of the UK.
38
THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | August 2019
This treatment is all about skin complexion! Without really noticing it, skin can get dull and our complexion becomes uneven. A common problem is when people suffer with pigmentation problems such as dark circles around and under the eyes and darker or lighter skin above the top lip. I spent a lot of time in the sun as a child and my face never used to tan like the rest of my body, until a whole summer working abroad in the sun and since I have had some uneven tones. Nothing horribly noticeable but noticeable enough to see improvements after having the facial.
If you have the opposite and you want to increase the melanin in your skin you could try to eat more antioxidants; eat more antioxidant-rich foods such as dark leafy greens, dark berries, dark chocolate, and colourful vegetables to get more antioxidants. Vitamin A is important to melanin production and is essential to having healthy skin. You get vitamin A from the food you eat, especially vegetables that contain beta carotene, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and peas. Vitamin E is also important, it could possibly boost melanin, you can get more by taking a supplement or by eating more vitamin E–rich foods like vegetables, grains, seeds, and nuts. For a kick start in your home treatment and skin care routine you can use Caudalie products; Vinoperfect Radiance Serum, which is the worldwide best seller and their new Vinoperfect night cream.
Remember to treat yourself once every so often and get yourself booked in for a facial.
After the facial I felt like a new me, being in the Cornish air probably helped but I’ve had a treatment at The Cove Spa in Chiswick, a full body massage, which had similar results. I trained as a beauty therapist when I left school and the therapist at The Cove Spa, hands down, gave the best massage I’ve ever had, so I equally believe whether in Cornwall or in Chiswick at The Cove Spa you’ll be receiving the best treatment available. Since my facial and my sister’s pigmentation struggle, my interest has grown, especially as she is just 32 and is troubled by it. Her pigmentation condition is hyperpigmentation which is an increase in melanin in the skin and can be caused many things, one being from fluctuations in hormones. Once dark spots begin, sun exposure will only exacerbate this condition, wearing sun block or keeping out of the sun to avoid further damage is helpful. There are treatments out there like laser and facial peels to address this issue and it’s best to see a skin specialist to have a proper consultation and get advice on the right treatment for you. How to look out for what goes on inside Sponsored feature
Learning more about upper gastrointestinal conditions By Professor Muntzer Mughal, Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at The Princess Grace Hospital, Chiswick Medical Centre and London Digestive Centre From swallowing difficulties and gallstones to oesophageal cancer, the positioning of an upper gastrointestinal (GI) condition in the oesophagus, stomach or first part of the small intestine means even those considered less severe are still not particularly pleasant.
Symptoms of gall stones to be aware of include: • Acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) • Biliary colic (severe abdominal pain) • Cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder) which can lead to severe pain and fever • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
As a general surgeon who has specialised in the treatment of upper GI conditions for over thirty years, I have certainly seen all manner of injuries in this area. However as many of my patients have found out to their detriment, it’s sometimes only the onset of sudden and excruciating pain that signifies the first indication of a problem.
As well as ensuring you are following a healthy and well-balanced diet, due to the serious nature of the symptoms concurrent with gallstones, if pain is present then treatment is often required to dissolve or remove the stones. This is normally possible through advanced medicines, or innovative keyhole surgery which can be carried out at The Princess Grace Hospital.
With this in mind, I take care to emphasise to all of my patients at Chiswick Medical Centre the importance of becoming educated on the general symptoms associated with upper GI conditions. After all, this knowledge may prove to be particularly helpful should you or a family member ever have the misfortune to experience any of them.
Achalasia When we swallow food, the muscles in our oesophagus (the tube from our mouth to our stomach) contract to push the food down. A muscular ring at the end of our oesophagus then relaxes so food can enter our stomach. Achalasia occurs when our oesophagus and muscular ring fail to contract and relax, leading to a build-up of food that doesn’t enter our stomach as it should. There are multiple symptoms of achalasia, such as: • Chest pain and recurring chest infections • Choking and coughing fits • Difficulty or pain when swallowing food (this is called dysphagia) • Heartburn • Vomiting after eating • Weight loss
General upper GI conditions and what to look out for The most common conditions that occur within the upper gastrointestinal area are predominantly treated by a gastroenterologist, and if required, a general surgeon such as myself. There are a range of related illnesses linked to this sub-specialty that you may recognise, the most recognisable of which I have detailed below: Gallstones Gallstones are small stones usually made up of cholesterol that appear in our gallbladder, the pear-shaped organ just below our liver which stores bile to help digest fat properly. They seem to be more prevalent in older people and women, and as with many related conditions are particularly linked to pregnancy, obesity and rapid weight gain.
40
THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | August 2019
As well as recommending changes to your dietary habits, we provide a range of innovative treatment options for achalasia at Chiswick Medical Centre – including specialist drug therapies and muscle relaxant injections to help relax the muscular ring at the base of your oesophagus, making swallowing food far easier as a result.

Health & Well-being
Hiatus hernia Hiatus hernias happen when part of our stomach moves up into our chest. Whilst this may sound incredibly painful, most hiatus hernias are in actual fact very common - particularly in adults over the age of 50. It’s possible to have a hiatus hernia without experiencing any specific problems or symptoms, however related factors to be aware of include: • Acid reflux • Bad breath • Burping and feeling bloated • Difficulty swallowing • Feeling nauseous and being sick • Heartburn Most hiatus hernias do not require surgical treatment, and can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes such as eating smaller meals more regularly, and removing certain foods from your diet. Gastroesophageal reflux (GORD) Perhaps the most common of the upper GI conditions, gastroesophageal reflux (GORD) results from acid and stomach contents travelling up into the oesophagus, often due to a weakened sphincter. The most commonly associated symptoms of GORD are: • Heartburn after eating or lying down • Chest pain • Sore throat • Phlegm in your throat, particularly after waking up Most reflux problems can be treated with general medication. This not only includes prescribed antacids such as omeprazole, lansoprazole and ranitidine, but for minimal reflux issues even everyday over-thecounter options available at your local chemist can suffice. In some extreme cases anti-reflux surgery can be the most suitable treatment option, which normally involves wrapping part of the top of the stomach loosely around the lower oesophagus. As with all of the more intricate surgeries for upper GI conditions, be assured that if a specific procedure is unavailable at Chiswick we can refer you directly to one of HCA Healthcare UK’s renowned London hospitals for further treatment.
HEALTHCARE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY IN CHISWICK
Identifying the lifestyle links As may have become clearer, the links between poor lifestyle and dietary habits and the onset of upper GI conditions is undeniable. With factors such as weight gain, obesity, poor diet and smoking playing such a major role in the onset of the conditions we’ve touched upon – it stands to reason that pursuing a healthier lifestyle is arguably the greatest deterrent to avoiding gastrointestinal problems as a whole.
If yourself, or one of your family members do display any of the symptoms I have touched upon in this article, be assured that our dedicated gastroenterology department at Chiswick will take great pride in providing you with expert diagnosis and treatment, with access to advanced medical technology within a state-of-the-art environment.
Of course, at Chiswick we fully appreciate the busy lives our patients live means it isn’t always easy (or indeed fun) to live by a strict health regime. This is why our gastroenterologists work closely with specialist dietitians and physiotherapists to create detailed dietary and exercise plans for patients diagnosed with upper GI conditions.
www.hcahealthcareuk.co.uk/chiswick
As an experienced general and upper gastrointestinal surgeon passionate about improving the lives of my patients, I continue to teach at the esteemed University College London and University College London Hospitals. This passion and responsibility is shared with my equally renowned colleagues at Chiswick Medical Centre, ensuring that patients of all ages who visit us receive the very best in specialist upper GI care.

ubury Place on Emlyn Road, W12 is gated, green, yet at the heart of bustling London.
How have the developers, Kebbell, managed to achieve this? Their formula was to look for somewhere up and coming, somewhere people would want to live, with good transport networks but a desirable lifestyle on the doorstep. By being on the edge of so much they were able to find the space to develop, and what they’ve created is beautiful. The latest homeowners in this stunning gated community note particularly that it feels very safe and secure. They want to build a community where their children can play together in the communal spaces. The red brick exteriors mirror the traditional style found in this part of London and with beautiful proportions, private gardens and mature trees these homes offer something very special. It’s a clever developer who can take a London space, keep a classical look and feel to the properties and then grow a garden oasis around them. Yet luxury developers Kebbell seem to have achieved just that. Offering homes with all of the facilities that busy modern lives demand these nine luxury homes have something special, something really desirable.
Discover your Eden at
Aubury Place
The interiors have been designed by Jo Harris, an independent interior designer and trusted advisor of Kebbell. They are timeless and classical with beautiful finishes in every room. The clever structures allow light to flood into the homes, and solid oak parquet flooring in a herringbone pattern means even the floors are exquisite! The entrance halls have the wow factor, thanks to the bespoke staircase, with its sensuously curving oak handrail, and finely crafted, powder coated metal spindles.
Throughout, mirror, lacquer, stone and wood create a feeling of the utmost glamour and refinement, visible everywhere from the showstopping kitchen/dining rooms, to the cloakrooms. All mirrors and light fittings are bespoke and unique, while the decorative architraves, timber panelled doors, and cornices are of a quality seldom seen in new homes.
Tucked away between the cafe society of Chiswick and the very smartest parts of Hammersmith, lies a little oasis, offering safety, seclusion and an escape to your very own eden. The chef can arrange a ‘must do’ Omani cooking experience to introduce you to shuwa, the national dish of Oman, where meat is marinated in oils and spices then wrapped in palm leaves and cooked in a fire pit for a day or more. The incredibly tender meat is served with rice and an aromatic Omani tomato sauce – simply delicious! • Pool Bar The crystal clear blue infinity pool is surrounded by the spectacular sand dunes. With comfortable individual sun-beds as well as tented day beds, the pool is the perfect place to relax and soak up the desert rays. There’s

always someone on-hand at the pool bar to take your drinks and snacks orders. With music playing in the background, it’s an unbeatable spot to watch the sun go down in a relaxed environment. • Special Occasions You can request a traditional Omani dining experience during your stay. Make yourself comfortable at a special cushioned seating area in the sand where you will be served dinner, drinks and shisha under the stars, while bathing in the light from lanterns and candles dotted all around. The perfect setting for a romantic or group dinner and one of my favourite experiences during my stay at Dunes by Al Nahda!
URU SPA The award winning URU Spa is the only one in Oman to have an Egyptian Sand Spa. After being buried up to the neck in sanitised sand in the sunken hot sand tubs with an aloe vera face mask on (the therapist kindly sits behind you and swats flies away while you relax) you’re moved to a wooden bed where creamy yoghurt is applied to your body and
allowed to settle for an additional 15 minutes. After washing the yoghurt off, the therapist gives you a massage with aromatherapy oils (the one used on me was called Liquid Gold and it smelt divine) leaving you feeling totally relaxed.
ACTIVITIES Dunes by Al Nahda offers a range of unique activities to enjoy while staying in the sand dunes. There’s an on-site 9-hole golf course, as well as the opportunity to go dune bashing, quad biking, sand surfing, kite flying and camel riding. This is one the most famous dune bashing spots in Oman, and if you don’t feel like having a go yourself, you can watch the locals come in their 4x4s to drive up and coast down the sand dunes from the comfort of the resort. I tried my hand at quad biking on the sand dunes and it was more challenging than I had imagined, with the sand moving under the wheels and the drops appearing to be much sheerer than anticipated when peering over the top of them. Don’t make the same mistake as me and stop half way up a dune. You will get stuck.
Luckily our guide was a pro and, after sending me up on foot, quickly saved my quad bike from it’s sunken state in the middle of the desert and returned it to my (not so) competent hands. Challenging, but loads of fun!
....................................................... THINGS TO EXPERIENCE IN MUSCAT .................................................. SULTAN QABOOS GRAND MOSQUE The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat is the main mosque in the Sultanate of Oman. The entire building is vast with a total capacity of up to 20,000 worshippers. This impressive structure was built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone, contains the second largest singlepiece carpet in the world and also the second largest chandelier in the world (both in the men’s prayer hall). The building is extraordinary to see (from the inside and outside) and highly worth a visit.

MUTRAH SOUQ The Mutrah Souq is perhaps one of the oldest marketplaces in the Arab world and is known locally as Al Dhalam (‘darkness’ in Arabic) Souq. It’s located right by Muscat harbour where you might see the Sultan’s two super yachts docked. See the Omani people in action here, as they come to socialise in the coffee shops outside the souq or as they shop for their wares inside. The Mutrah souq carries a huge variety of items: from household goods, shoes and ready-made
garments to spices, perfumes and oils. From typical ‘tourist’ keepsakes to more traditional ‘Omani’ items, you’re sure to find something inside worth haggling over.
GUIDED CITY TOUR I love a good guided tour. The best way to get to know the country you’re staying in is to speak to people who are from there. Our guide was great and shared lots of interesting information about Muscat, and was happy to answer all our questions about the culture and way of life in Oman. Guided tours can be organised by Dunes by Al Nahda on request.
FUN FACTS ......................................................................................................................................... • Dates are an important part of Omani culture and you’ll find them in every household. The Sultan of Oman has created a project to plant one million date trees to ensure that all Omanis have a source of food. • When drinking coffee and your cup is empty, if you want more you give the cup back to your server, and if you don’t want more you shake your cup before giving it back. This originates from top-secret meetings where deaf servers worked, who couldn’t overhear important information. • The mussar (Omani headdress worn by men) is worn in different styles depending on which city the person comes from. People can tell where someone is from just by looking at their mussar. The royal family have their own unique style of wearing their mussar. • The Omani flag is comprised of three symbolic colours: The white represents peace and prosperity, the green fertility of the land and the red represents the battles fought against foreign invaders. The national emblem is also displayed on the flag, comprising of a khanjar inside its sheath and two crossed swords. • Omani people can receive their entire education for free and when someone reaches the age of 23, they are given a free piece of land. Health care is also free in Oman.

JUNGLE MUSCAT If you’re looking for a great dining experience in Muscat, The Jungle is a tropical rainforest themed restaurant offering a unique opportunity to experience the natural elements atypical of a pre-historic rainforest - rain, thunder and lightning along with the sounds of a roaring dinosaur, chirping birds and other animals. The culinary experience at The Jungle Restaurant comprises of a mixture of Middle Eastern, Asian and European menus. The restaurant is family-friendly, allowing children to have their own dining experience with the Junior Explorer Menus. Apart from the unique ambience and fantastic food, there is a plant shop located at the entrance of the restaurant, where guests can find out about various flora found in the Sultanate, or buy exotic plants and flowers.
....................................................... FINAL THOUGHTS ON OMAN ....................................................... One thing that stood out to me throughout my entire trip to Oman was the warmth and openness of the Omani people. People here seem to want you to enjoy yourself and feel at home. The Omanis love their country and all its history and traditions. Staying in the desert was one of those wow! moments in my life. Don’t let the word ‘camping’ or ‘tents’ fool you: the experience at Dunes by Al Nahda is of the utmost luxury. Walking back to my bedroom after dinner one night, with the path and tent area lit up with hundreds of lanterns and candles (the only light visible among the dark dunes), the warm evening breeze on my skin and the smell of the sand in the air, I couldn’t help but smile to myself. I couldn’t have been in a place so surreal and far from home, yet felt so at ease and like I was at home. When I think of my time in Oman I am filled with a warm feeling of homeliness, and somewhere I know I will feel welcome anytime.

AN AUTHENTIC TASTE OF TUSCANY BROUGHT TO LONDON W4
Villa di Geggiano
This elegant restaurant is the unofficial outpost of the fabulous 15th century Palazzo in which the aristocratic Bianchi Bandinelli family have lived for five centuries. Legend has it that in 1752 this Tuscan villa produced the first Chianti to be exported to England. THE FOOD IS SUBLIME
THE WINE IS DIVINE
The menu is ingredient-led and uncomplicated. Wherever possible, the restaurant procures from organic, traceable and sustainable sources.
As the owners have their own highly-regarded organic vineyard, there are impressive stocks in the capacious cellar. There are also organic wines from the villa’s neighbouring estates and many other fine Italian wines. The house red in this restaurant is absolutely the right decision to make.
Choose from a tasting plate of cured meats and cheeses straight from Siena, a delicious bowl of home-made pappardelle with duck or wild boar, or if you’re feeling peckish, go for the char-grilled Tuscan Fiorentina – 800g of prime beef for two to share. And if you’re around for lunch, there’s no better introduction to the deliciousness of the Villa than the special set lunch menu, offering two courses for £20 and three courses for £25.

The Villa is about feeding the soul as well as the body. Across the dining rooms, you’ll find a wide array of contemporary paintings and sculpture. Here, established artists rub shoulders with talented newcomers.
