The Chiswick Diary LAST MONTH IN CHISWICK Chiswick Park Enjoy-Work celebrates its success at its annual Fireworks Extravaganza
It was that time of the year again last month when west London’s skies were lit up by the Chiswick Park Fireworks Extravaganza. 7,000 people attended the free annual fireworks display on Thursday 7th November. The local community joined the Guests working on-site for a spectacular and now traditional evening at Chiswick Park. There was live music, performers and food traders, as well as children’s entertainment. The 20- minute fireworks display was setoff from the top of Building 9 at 7.00pm. It followed a Fire Walk; a charity activity for Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, raising over £6,500 on the night. This year Chiswick Park welcomed an array of new Guest companies including Venture X, Pharma Review, British American Tobacco and Fox News in Building 7. Today, Chiswick Park brings together over 9,000 people from 75 of some of the world’s leading companies such as Paramount, Discovery, Starbucks and Danone. The employees working on the Campus regularly enjoy events and activities organised by the property management company Enjoy-Work. The programme of events is designed to increase the productivity of the workers. Fireworks Extravaganza is one of the many events that welcomes the local community. The Metropolitan Police supported the event alongside the Enjoy-Work on-site security team to ensure visitor safety.
COMING UP Chiswick Choir concert: An English Christmas
After their very successful summer concert at St John Smith Square in Westminster, the Chiswick Choir returns to one of its usual Chiswick venues for its December concert with an English programme of carols and Christmas music from some of the great English composers of the early and mid twentieth century. The concert takes place on 7 December at St Michael and All Angels Church at 7.30pm. The main work in the first half is Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, a diverse and imaginative setting of medieval and Tudor Carols for harp and choir. The concert includes contrasting fantasias on well known Christmas carols from Holst and Vaughan Williams for soloists and choir. The late work by Finzi In Terra Pax, subtitled ‘Christmas Scene’ is based on a Robert Bridges’ poem alongside the passage from St Luke’s gospel relating the angel’s appearance to the shepherds. Soloists sing the poem and the words of the angel with the choir singing the biblical text. A moving and intricate composition rightly one of Finzi’s most popular works. The concert also includes Holst’s monumental setting of Psalm 148 that he wrote for St Paul’s Girls’ School when Director of Music there. Admission costs £15 or £5 for under 21s. They can be purchased on the door, from choir members and from www.ticketsource.co.uk/chiswickchoir
Hogarth Singers Christmas Carol concerts

Directed by Rupert Gill, the programme will include carols that are familiar and some that may be new to you. For tickets for 13 December, please call The Musical Museum on 0208 560 8108 Thursday – Sunday from 10 – 5. For more information and to buy tickets for the concert on 14 December, please see www.hogarthsingers.org. The River’s Archaeological Tale
A talk by archaeologist Josh Frost from the Thames Discovery Programme at Chiswick Pier Trust on Tuesday, 28 January at 7.30pm. Explore the history and archaeology of the River Thames without having to get your feet wet. From prehistoric to the present day, the Thames has been at the heart of London’s story. Twice a day from Erith in the east to Isleworth in the west, low tides reveals the archaeology of the foreshore, but with increasing erosion this archaeology is at risk. The Thames Discovery Programme is a community archaeology project dedicated to monitoring and recording the incredible archaeology of the foreshore along the tidal Thames. Now in its tenth year, the TDP has trained over 700 volunteers to record the archaeology of the fast eroding foreshore. Senior Community Archaeologist Josh Frost will tell the story of the river’s archaeological tale through the sites on which the TDP works and how the remains on the foreshore play a vital role in telling London’s story. Doors open at 7pm. £3 for non-members, free for members. Parking is free in nearby Pumping Station Road after 5pm. Buses E3 or 190. Age Concern Chiswick is a small independent charity which started life as the Brentford and Chiswick Old Folks Club, and has been serving the older members of the Chiswick and Brentford communities for over 60 years. The charity is run entirely by dedicated volunteers. Our mission, as true today as it was in the 1950s, is to promote the well-being of older people, to offer friendship and to help make later life an enjoyable and satisfying experience.

We rely heavily on the support of our wonderful local community – for volunteers and for fundraising. We receive no central or local government funding. Keeping older members visible and engaged is important to keep our community vibrant and diverse. Chiswick Together is one initiative that brings together several local organisations and charities working to ensure that opportunities for the elderly are widely publicised. I have lived in Chiswick for over 25 years. But my own association with the area stretches back much further: I was born in Hammersmith, both my parents were born in west London, and my grandparents lived in Shepherd’s Bush. At Age Concern Chiswick we have many mem-
bers whose family history is similarly rooted in this part of London but we also have members who are new to the area – there is a lot of rapid change happening to our community. Newcomers and long-time residents alike can find themselves unexpectedly isolated and in need of company and friendship, or be simply looking for new ways of participating in their community, or hoping to meet new friends or re-discover old ones. We aim therefore to provide a welcoming and friendly venue at Age Concern Chiswick where anyone can walk in and feel comfortable, take part in activities or simply have a chat and a cup of tea. Everyone is welcome. Do come. Whether you come with a friend or come alone, you will receive a warm welcome.

Saba who was working as a Food Bank Manager in Brent decided to set up That’s A Wrap with other locals as she wanted to use her skills and experience to organise a worthwhile personal project in her local area. Despite working in the charitable sector, she felt disconnected from the needs in her own area. Although they were a brand-new initiative with no track record, they decided to set an ambitious target of 2000 brand new toys based on the requests they

or the second year running a small group of Hounslow residents have launched their Winter Toy Appeal to provide Christmas gifts to disadvantaged children living in the local area. ‘That’s A Wrap’ was launched by the local residents ahead of Christmas last year and is now being supported by a number of Chiswick schools. We chat to Saba Hassan, Founder and Chair of That’s A Wrap about the initiative whilst she works on this year’s appeal.

From left to right - back Omair Nazimi, Ibrahim Mohamed, Dahir Mohamoud From left to right - front Saba Hassan, Amina Fiaz received from local charities. Thankfully, the local community came out to support this new appeal. ‘‘As toys started to first trickle then pour in, we were completely floored by the overwhelming support and generosity from local people,’’ Saba says. The reason behind the creation of That’s A Wrap and the statistics of child poverty in the borough are undoubtedly heartbreaking and makes the success of the initiative bittersweet explains Saba. ‘‘However, working on That’s A Wrap has truly revealed the best of our community. To know that someone nearby has seen our call out for toy donations and has given something, however small, really reaffirms your faith in people. The number of individuals that have bought and donated a toy, or helped us wrap donations, or simply emailed asking how they can help, is the most amazing thing.’’ Chiswick’s Strand on the Green Infant and Nursery School were actually one of the first schools to respond to last year’s appeal. ‘‘Headteacher Nav must be a superhero!’’ Saba exclaims. ‘‘Their generosity and the sheer number and quality of their donations would have overwhelmed anyone. They dropped off over three hundred, brand new toys on the eve of our Toy Wrapping Event. We had a huge task on our hands, sorting the donations just before the event day, and what a great way it was to end our toy appeal. They were the first to sign up this year too, and we have been told to expect a similar donation this year. Needless to say, we’re delighted!’’ Chiswick School and Grove Park Primary School are also collecting toys this year as well as a number of schools in Isleworth and Feltham. Local businesses are also getting involved including the newly launched Tapori Curry Bar in Hounslow who have signed up as a toy donation point and are offering
a leaflet to each of their customers. In Chiswick, our local library is also a donation point and local residents can simply deposit a new and unused toy donation into the hard to miss big yellow wheelie bin. The power of social media has meant that Chiswick Arts Theatre has got involved organising a collection from their reception. Saba says That’s A Wrap are keen to build new links with new community groups and organisations every year. ‘‘The beauty of the project is that we can never have too many people involved.’’ Community cohesion is a vital aspect of the appeal with Saba organising a Big Community Toy Wrap event to bring like-minded volunteers together in a practical way. ‘‘It’s not only an excellent way for us to showcase the wonderful work of local charities working on the frontline day in and day out, but it’s also a great opportunity for people to chat, meet new people and to experience the joy of giving,’’ she says. ‘‘Living in a city like London can also be, ironically, a lonely experience for some, especially around Christmas time. We really want our events to be a place where anyone and everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, can pop down and spend some time doing something good, and to learn about local needs in an accessible way.’’ This year, That’s A Wrap are supporting at least 21 charities all of whom are listed on their website. This list includes many food banks, baby banks, family support charities, a children’s hospice and many more. If you would like to donate or sign up to volunteer you can do so very easily at www.thatsawrap.org.uk. This year’s Community Toy Wrapping Event will take place on Sunday 15 December at the Nishkam School in Isleworth.

The new planting will lift the entrance to Devonshire Road and prevent some of the ongoing littering, as well as greening the area. The edging and plants were funded by the government’s High Road grant via the council. There is considerable evidence that green spaces improve civic pride, mental health and of course biodiversity.

Abundance London, in partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow, Hounslow Highways and Stefano Marinaz Landscape Architecture, last month carried out planting improvements around the William Hogarth statue and the tree pits in Devonshire Road. Specially-commissioned stylish steel edging, with bulbs and plants providing year-round interest were installed on Friday 22 November.

Stefano Marinaz approached Abundance after noticing the perennial planting by the piazza on Turnham Green Terrrace. Stefano commented: “Since we recently opened our new studio in Chiswick, it’s great to work with Abundance on this planting. Even though at the moment my company works with private clients, for several years I also worked in the public sector. I’m delighted our team could help out.”

The traders on Devonshire Road will water the plants in dry periods, while Barclays Bank will look after those around the Hogarth statue. The existing tree planting further from the High Road will continue to be planted up and looked after by the pet shop. Cecilie Brinckmann, whose shop overlooks one of the hitherto neglected tree pits, said: “We at Wild Swans were thrilled when we heard of the idea to plant beautiful tree pits on Devonshire Road and they have long been anticipated! A great way of decorating our beloved road - thank you for the gift!” Karen Liebreich of Abundance said: “We were really pleased that Stefano offered his design help and his team to work with us and Hounslow Highways to facilitate the project. The local traders need all the support they can get, so we hope these improvements will help the shopping experience. The Hogarth statue is a focal point on our High Road, and we hope the planting will enhance that area.”

Local surveyor Steve Nutt, fresh from his triumph with the benches on the Turnham Green Terrace piazza, has overseen the hard landscaping. Stefano Marinaz Landscape Architecture provided expertise for the planting scheme and their in-house maintenance team planted out the beds. The studio works alongside international architects and designers on projects ranging from small private gardens to larger landscapes, and historical restorations to installations for garden festivals. All worked pro bono on this project. A team from PGSD, contractors for Hounslow Highways also worked hard installing the steel rims.

The 12 pubs of Chiswick
The Crown
So to soften our cold crispy cheeks and warm up our fingers, we have come up with 12 pubs of Chiswick worth visiting this Christmas period to keep you from the cold. Now, it’s up to you whether you visit them all in one evening, or if you spread it out across a couple, or make a weekend or two out of it. There’s not much that beats a good evening with friends in a nice, warm British pub! Here we have photographs of The Mawsons Arms, The Bell and Crown, The Crown & Anchor, The George IV, The Old Packhorse, The Tabard, One Over The Ait, The Crown, The Lamb, The Dove, The George and Devonshire and The
Pilot. The pubs spread out from Strand-on-the-Green to near Hammersmith, so we’ve covered the full stretch, by the river and the High Road. Between these beautiful pubs, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to lager, beer and spirits galore, to lift you higher into the Christmas spirit! They have great kitchens and chefs and serve lovely food. The Old Packhorse has a fantastic Thai restaurant inside, The Crown serves a Mediterranean menu and good wines, and has a covered courtyard garden with subtle clues to the pub’s previous life as a police station. The Tabard is well known for its theatre, known as The Chiswick Playhouse, the pub is offering festive feasts and fireside spiced gin. The Bell & Crown and One Over The Ait are nicely located by the River Thames and perfect to combine with a stroll if weather permits. The George IV is a classic Fuller’s pub that has live music, comedy and quiz nights, and they run open mic evenings on Wednesdays. It’s worth mentioning these pubs are great to visit all year round too. Enjoy and have a fantastic Christmas, we’ll see you in the new year!

ver the winter and Christmas period it’s tempting to stay at home most nights. The cold weather and travelling via bus or train isn’t much fun or incredibly appealing. The thought of waiting and shivering in the cold for one to appear is bleak. Now that we’ve entered December and South West Trains are on strike for the month, it doesn’t look like things are getting much better for us! Ubers and Bolts will be increasing their rides with the delays and cancellations - nobody wants to wait for a long time at the platform.

Heal’s comes to town By Áine McGinty
Forget Santa Claus, December in Chiswick is now all about Heal’s (well, to me anyway). Britain’s oldest furniture retailer has this month opened a store on Chiswick High Road bringing the gift of some instantly recognisable homeware pieces to the streets of W4.

uth Cotterell, Head of Marketing at Heal’s spoke to The Chiswick Magazine to give us the low down on their latest venture ahead of the store’s grand opening on 3 December. ‘‘We’re always looking for new opportunities where we think we have Heal’s type customers,’’ Ruth says when asked why Heal’s chose to open their seventh store here in Chiswick. ‘‘We know people in Chiswick like looking after their homes,’’ she adds. As you might expect Ruth is a Heal’s expert - our lovely chat felt almost like a Heal’s history lesson and I won’t lie, it got me even more excited about Chiswick’s new addition. Heal’s opened in 1810 as a mattress manufacturer introducing feather mattresses to the UK. They have always been at the forefront of contemporary design and stunning craftsmanship so Chiswick shoppers can be assured that purchases made at Heal’s are investment pieces that will last a long time, Ruth tells me. Their flagship store in Tottenham Court Road has been their home for 201 years ago and it’s clear they’re hoping to make a similar impact in west London.

Heal’s hope to embed themselves in the local communi-
ty and for their opening they had proud Chiswick resident Barbara Chandler there to cut the ribbon as well as their CEO Hamish Mansbridge. store will actually stock some of the same things as Tottenham Court Road but at a fraction of the price. Whether you’re an existing Heal’s customer or new to the brand, there should be something there for you.
“We’re delighted to be able to bring Heal’s to Chiswick, offering an exciting outlet for shoppers to discover their favourite designs.”
Christmas is very quickly creeping up on us and this new store on the High Road provides another place to shop for the perfect gift for the people in your life. Ruth tells me that the Chiswick store will stock beautiful brand new spa towels and Christmas baubles for you to decorate your home amongst other delightful products.
With their new 2,080 sq ft home Heal’s will be offering a selection of cancelled, returned and overstocked pieces all at significantly reduced prices, with up to 70% off across Heal’s furniture, lighting and accessories, as well as branded products. The news of Heal’s coming to Chiswick will delight fans of the brand who will no longer have to travel to Westfields or Tottenham Court Road in pursuit of new furniture. The Chiswick outlet
Heal’s are clearly excited about their latest store and Ruth was quick to make reference to just how privileged they are to be opening a store rather than closing one - as is sadly the case with many highstreet stores and evident in Chiswick. ‘‘We really hope that people in Chiswick will come out and support us,’’ Ruth says before we end our chat and with pristine products at discount prices they’re certainly worth popping into.

Celebrate the spirit of Christmas at Wiltons By Katie Saunders
I
f you are looking for a sensational Christmas dining experience and the perfect turkey, we strongly recommend Wiltons in St James’s, London. Wiltons was founded in 1742 by George William Wilton and his restaurant continues to thrive 275 years later, and it is the second oldest restaurant in the area. They’re well known for the quality of their seafood and having the finest oysters, they have a fun and educational Oyster Masterclass evening available to pre-book, which happens at the restaurant’s bar every month. Wiltons is recognised by the Royal household and is the proud owner of six Royal Warrants, receiving its first in 1836. Traditional values remain and Christmas is joyfully celebrated each year at Wiltons and their festive dinner is held in the elegantly appointed, private dining room, the Jimmy Marks Room over the Christmas period and seats up to 20 guests.

If you haven’t visited Wiltons before, you’ll walk in and the lovely hosts greet you and take your coats to be safely stored away, so you can walk on through to the restaurant and bar area in a relaxed manner and take a seat whilst your guests arrive, or your table is ready. It’s warm and cosy inside with a friendly atmosphere and the décor is traditional and elegant. Harry, the restaurant’s iconic lobster, drawn by an artist many years ago, is the friendly symbol with a heart-warming background story which is good enough reason to visit just to ask about! I had the pleasure of experiencing the spirit of Christmas in the summer, in their private dining room, the Jimmy Marks Room. Unlike many other establishments you have complete privacy from the rest of the restaurant and you have plenty of space for many of you and your friends or work parties to eat happily and comfortably. Wiltons’ director Jason Phillips greeted us and tells us a story from 1942 about how a close encounter with a Luftwaffe bomb prompted the owner, Bessie Leale, who was frightened by the experience, to sell Wiltons to merchant banker Olaf Hambro who was dining at the restaurant at the time – Hambro memorably asking for the sale cost to be put on his bill. Wiltons remains in the Hambro family to this day. On the day of your Christmas dinner you’ll have time to talk and socialise before the food arrives and the table is a good shape and size, which makes talking to everyone easy,
without bending or stretching behind or over the person sat next to you. The Christmas menu begins with champagne and canapes and the starters arrive shortly after and you can tuck into a beautifully presented venison carpaccio, quince and hazelnut salad. It’s a good size to keep the wolf from the door until the main event enters the room. The traditional roast turkey comes in on a beautiful and traditional carving trolley and with a friendly waiter dressed smartly in a black suit, white shirt and tie. The carving trolley is silver and luxurious. Whilst the turkey is carved the rest of the food arrives and there are roast potatoes, honey truffle parsnips and brussels sprouts with bacon and chestnuts. Using only the finest British produce and quality ingredients from the British Isles, Head Chef Daniel Kent and his talented team presented us with a wonderfully satisfying Christmas feast. As we learnt from our Chef when he made an appearance at the end of the evening, the turkey was brined in salt water for 12 hours prior to cooking. This preparation method creates an enjoyable juicy turkey and brings out the flavour and is the best Christmas turkey I’ve had. Sitting very happy and appreciating the flavours and the effort put into festive dinner fit for a king, our pudding is ready and placed in front of us. We have sauternes custard and Armagnac prunes. Its stunning presentation compliments its sweet taste and ends the meal perfectly, but of course Christmas would not be Christmas without Christmas crackers and party hats and we all pull a cracker with the other guests as the meal draws to an end.

Meet the Artist By Katie Saunders
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Charlotte Berridge, a designer and illustrator from Ealing, west London. Charlotte creates wonderful drawings inspired by west London architecture. These include Chiswick, Ealing, Acton, Richmond, Kew, Brentford, Twickenham and most recently Hammersmith. After leaving her career as a creative director in the magazines, Charlotte returned to her roots as an illustrator.

n the early days of drawing, Charlotte wondered if people would like her illustrations but her friends thought they were great and encouraged her to sell them. Four years ago at a local Christmas fair things went well and her business has been expanding ever since. Her first focus was Ealing, as that’s where she lives, but illustrations of Chiswick (where her partner used to live) followed not long after. Charlotte’s pub illustrations have proved very popular and she says that she particularly loves researching them ‘inside & out’! To date, Charlotte has drawn 128 pubs, 102 in west London postcodes and the remaining 26 in central London.
Holly Booth Photography
It’s important to Charlotte to celebrate west London and to support the community by encouraging people to buy local and make the most of what we have around us. This is apparent in her work. With so much detail she creates each piece by working from photographs she has taken and revisits 3 or 4 times to get the finer details and make sure the illustration is just right. All of her work is drawn by hand and attached to the computer so she can achieve straight lines and work on the details by blowing it up and zooming in to add tiny effects. Customers love the attention to detail that she puts into the illustrations. Her drawings are available as prints, greeting cards and tea towels. People who have lived in the area and moved abroad often order prints from Japan, Australia and very recently, Columbia. She plans to add more areas of west London to her collection but has to say ‘one postcode at a time’ as they all take a long time to research and produce. Charlotte had a stall at the Chiswick House Dog Show this year and has been at the Bedford Park Festival’s Green Days weekend for the past three years. One year she caught the attention of Pete Reed, the gold medal winner for rowing in the 2012 Olympics. When he noticed his gold post box on one of her tea towels, he bought it to give to his dad. Keeping her illustrations local means they have much more meaning and are fun and special gifts. Charlotte loves hearing the numerous stories inspired by her drawings, including couple’s first dates, engagements and birthday parties. so having a lovely illustration of a pub that has played a significant memory in your life is a thoughtful gift.

The whole process of running a small business has been a steep learning curve, she has met and been encouraged by many fellow small businesses. Although she lives in Ealing, Chiswick Creatives were happy for her to join them as it’s only round the corner! A small number of Chiswick Creatives put together a Christmas Makers’ Market at St Michael & All Angels Church. Hansel and Gretel as you’ve never seen before By Áine McGinty
Chiswick Playhouse’s enchanting re-imagining of the timeless classic Hansel and Gretel comes to W4 this month. Director Lucy Jane Atkinson spoke to The Chiswick Magazine ahead of the play’s run.
Lucy tells me that with their production of the tale they have kept the basic plot intact. It will still be about a brother and sister, their father and evil stepmother. They will get left in the woods, find a gingerbread house and outsmart a witch. However, Chiswick Playhouse’s production will take place in a post-climate disaster future. ‘‘It’s a story you know well, in a way you’ve never seen before,’’ Lucy says. The woods are full of the spirits of extinct animals, the witch is a chemist who makes pesticides and eats children as an alternative sustainable food source, and one of their heroes is a tap dancing cockroach from New York.
Decem meceD
It was the reimagining of a classic tale that made Lucy want to direct it. ‘‘I think updating traditional fairytales and classic stories for contemporary audiences allows us to look into the folklore that helped to shape our society, and how those lessons can still be relevant hundreds of years after they were originally written,’’ she says. The show’s ecological message is particularly timely at the moment due to the high profile cries of Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion. ‘‘In setting the show in the very near future, there’s a more immediate message about climate change and the little things everyone can do to help save the planet,’’ Lucy says. The play has a magnificent cast with Joshua Oakes-Rogers (The Dead Room, BBC Four; Body and Sold, Park Theatre; Vespertilio, VAULT Festival) and Pippa Conway (Oh, What A Lovely War!, Gulbenkian Theatre; Drakula, The Ballroom; Mary and Joseph, Southwark Playhouse) playing Hansel and Gretel.

ansel and Gretel is part of the first season at Chiswick Playhouse since its rebrand. They plan to produce new work as well as reimagining classic stories. ‘It’s great to be part of the team establishing the new theatre’s identity and vision for the future,’’ Lucy says.

Joshua and Pippa are best friends in real life and the bond between the two of them is beautiful to see on stage, Lucy tells me. Serena Flynn (Baubo: Goddess of Filth, Soho Theatre; Prune; Edinburgh Fringe) who plays the stepmother and witch and trained at LeCoq in Paris as a clown is hilarious and Tomi Ogbaro (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre; Sweet Charity, Watermill Theatre; Seagulls, Octagon Theatre) who plays the father and Tony the cockroach can sing like an angel. ‘‘It’s been a pretty short rehearsal process and it’s been an absolute gift to have such a talented, positive, hilarious cast to work with,’’ she adds. The play also features a dazzling original soundtrack by composer Leon Parris. Hansel and Gretel will delight both young and old Chiswick audiences. ‘‘I think there’s a lot in it that will resonate with the audiences here. Climate change, adventure, grief, bravery, and learning to love your siblings, even if it seems like you have nothing in common,’’ Lucy says. Head along to the Chiswick Playhouse this month to laugh, sing and be moved with Hansel and Gretel. You can keep up to date with Lucy’s career at lucyjaneatkinson.com

No Far Shores: Charting Unknown Waters By Áine McGinty
Local poet Anne-Marie Fyfe, originally from Cushendall in the Glens of Antrim has released a reflective literary travel memoir exploring her connection to the sea which has been evident since her very first poetry collection, Late Crossing.
‘‘But I also saw it as a quest to explore an unresolved time in my own family story: that was the ‘Charting Unknown Waters’ element. The third journey was the unexpected one, in discovering so much about some of my favourite writers’ lives, coastal writers, writers passionate about the sea and farther shores, about horizon gazing. Writers like Elizabeth
Decem meceD
Bishop & Virginia Woolf. Tracing their writing journeys was the hidden treasure. The grail!’’ she adds. The process of writing this piece involved not only driving along coasts and visiting ports but engaging with locals who live and work with the sea and hearing and sharing stories. Arts Council England awarded the project a travel grant, and in each location she visited Anne-Marie gave poetry workshops and words & music performances which she says brought together so much coastal lore and experience. ‘‘Of course there was a great deal of research, into those writers lives, into the history, say, of lighthouses, or certain maritime tragedies, but the real inspiration was continually being back at the ocean’s edge, on the edge of the depths!’’ she says.

‘‘No Far Shore is the story of two or maybe three journeys: one of which was exploring coastlines –I’d grown up on the North Antrim coast and, living in London, had always loved going back to that shoreline, and to anywhere else where I could see the horizon. So I set out to travel Britain’s & Ireland’s shores, and US & Canadian Atlantic coasts and islands,’’ Anne-Marie says when asked to talk us through her latest work.

But why has she decided to explore this connection now? ‘‘I realised, after publishing five books of poetry over twenty years, from ’Late Crossing’ to ‘House of Small Absences’, that harbours, lonely lookouts on headlands, distant lighthouses and shorelines in my poems were all expressing a longing – for the sea, obviously, for the past, but also for a kind of understanding.’’ Anne-Marie has lived in Chiswick since the mid-80s raising her children here and embedding herself in Chiswick’s rich literary heritage, whilst managing to frequently return to the Antrim Coast. So does Anne-Marie think Chiswick is a good place for writers to prosper? ‘‘Writers have always been inspired by the natural environment, and Chiswick is the first place, heading west from the city, that has nature in such abundance,’’ she says. The Chiswick Timeline of Writers and Books proves just how vital that pastoral escape has been to literature over the years and continues to be, she adds. Anne-Marie has run readings and workshops at the Troubadour in Earls Court for a number of years as well as running poetry events locally as part of the Bedford Park Festival and classes at Chiswick & Bedford Park Preparatory. More recently, she has been giving writing classes at ArtsEd on Sunday afternoons. She has also watched the Chiswick Book Festival grow over recent years and enjoyed its range and energy. This year, Anne-Marie awarded the schools’ poetry prizes. ‘‘I’m just amazed at how many people locally are writing!’’ she says. Anne-Marie is careful to note that Chiswick’s literary ambience was especially important for Irish writer WB Yeats who loved the greenery and the river because it reminded him so much of his much-missed County Sligo. ‘‘But it was his writerly, and publishing, and theatrical connections, in Bedford Park, that launched the career that led to his Nobel-Prize-winning status,’’ she adds. This story, Anne-Marie tells us has been very important to both her and her partner Cahal Dallat, who’s also a poet. Cahal has just launched a project to celebrate Yeats’s Bedford Park years with a major public artwork. You can find out more about this project by visiting wbyeatsbedfordpark.com

Turner and the Thames:
Five Paintings Turner’s House exhibition features rarely seen oils of the Thames in west London. The first exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s original work in the house he designed for himself is to open on January 10th, 2020, thanks to a generous loan from Tate.
The works have been chosen for their depictions of scenes close to his house near the river, and feature riparian landscapes from Isleworth to Windsor. The Thames enticed Turner to buy a plot of land in Twickenham on which to build a retreat for him and his father in the 1800s and he designed the villa so that he could glimpse the river from his bedroom window. Turner spent a lot of time on the Thames both working and fishing, keeping his catch in two ponds in what was then a large, country garden.
Decem meceD
At the time Turner painted the exhibition’s five oils on mahogany panels he was renting Syon Ferry House in Isleworth, retreating from the pressures of London life. Although this house no longer exists, his experience there was instrumental in his subsequent acquisition in 1807 of a piece of land in Twickenham on which he later built Sandycombe Lodge to his own designs, and which is now open to the public. During Turner’s time in Isleworth he acquired a little boat and modified it for use as a floating studio from which he could record first-hand impressions of the river. The exhibition features five stunning examples from this extraordinary series of work created on the river, painted on small panels of wood which were portable yet solid, making them easier to work on in situ. Unusually, they are painted on mahogany veneer and it is thought that Turner, who is known for improvising with materials, may have made them using recycled bits of furniture.

More typically, Turner created many pencil sketches in situ which he collected in notebooks for reference when making larger, finished works in oils and watercolours in the studio. He declared that painting out of doors was a waste of time, as it was easier to mix the paints and work on canvas indoors. This is why the five oil studies in the exhibition are so rare and yet affirm the importance he placed on accurately depicting his favourite river. These smaller pieces would have helped him to more convincingly evoke the mood of the Thames in larger finished oil paintings back in his studio in Queen Anne Street. The Thames was an inspiration that flowed through Turner’s life, from his birth near the river in Covent Garden to the houses he lived in at Hammersmith, Brentford and Chelsea. Turner not only valued the river’s aesthetic and emotional qualities but also its cultural potency and he read the work of poets like Alexander Pope who had lived nearby. While his monumental and sometimes allegorical depictions of the Thames were refined through the lens of the 17th-century landscape masters he admired, such as Claude Lorrain and Nico-

las Poussin, it is in the fresh oil sketches displayed in this intimate exhibition that we see Turner at his most spontaneous and responsive to the natural potential of a landscape which was particularly special for him. The exhibition has been made possible through The Ferryman Project: Sharing Works of Art which is supported by National Lottery players through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the John Ellerman Foundation and the Art Fund. The curator of the exhibition, Andrew Loukes, a Trustee of Turner’s House Trust and Collections Manager for Petworth House said, “Turner’s House Trust is delighted that, thanks to the Ferryman Project, we can invite visitors for the very first time to see an exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s original work in his self-designed house in Twickenham. Visitors will be able to enjoy these rarely seen oils, which offer a fascinating and intimate glimpse of the great artist’s practice, and show him responding with particular immediacy to a subject of great importance to him. We intend this to be the first of a series exploring his relationship to west London and his Sandycombe years.”

met Latymer Upper School pupil, Lysander, the founder and CEO of Leo’s Box, which stands for Loving Earth’s Oceans. They are eco friendly products delivered to your door. Lysander came up with this brilliant idea because he likes the concept of subscriptions and the boxes are about looking after yourself, your home and the planet. Lysander is passionate and cares about the world and the current state and condition of our world’s climate and climate change. By creating these household and beauty boxes, Lysander wants to make purchasing beauty and cleaning products and becoming eco friendly, sustainable and plastic free easier. As mentioned there are two types of boxes to choose from. The monthly home box and the monthly beauty box. Quite self explanatory that the home box includes products to clean the house and the beauty box includes skin care and beauty products for yourself. What’s most important to Lysander is that each and every product you’ll receive is from eco friendly and vegan sources. Products include soaps, eco friendly make up pads, make up remover, face masks and face scrubs and are from the following brands - Upcircle, Tabitha Eve, Your Nature and more. The home box includes products that usually come in plastic packaging but instead replaces them with eco friendly versions. Lysander has been hot on getting his research done and getting it right, and found out that Artisan Coffee who have a coffee shop in King Street, Stamford Brook have teamed together with a brand called Up Circle. The coffee that would usually have gone to waste is made into skin care products and face scrubs instead of being thrown away. I have tried the coffee face scrub from Up Circle. It is made with top quality Arabica coffee grounds and blended with gorgeous essential oils, rosehip, lemon, cedarwood and frankincense. It’s indulgent and fun to apply, but it’s dark and I would take care not to spill it over your clothes or towels, however it is easy to wash away. It’s palm oil free, 100% certified natural and vegan.
Lysander is 16 and has been funding his business with his casual part time job and spends time during his school days daydreaming about what Leo’s boxes could become and what he wants to do next. He’s already got the interest and praise from a few big wigs, and rightly so because they are all environmentally aware and like what he’s doing. Lysander has always been conscious of the air we breathe and pollution levels in London and in 2018 was nominated as a finalist for The Greenest Young Person in Hammersmith, as well as for the Hammersmith Fulham Civic Honours Award – these were the result of research he had done into plants that help reduce pollution in the air and the introduction of peace lilies, snake plants and elephant’s ears into classrooms at his school. He is also the Chairman of the Eco-Committee at his school. Another benefit that happens with every order, is a tree is planted. Leo’s box has partnered with One Tree Planted to ensure that with every order that is sent out a tree is planted to bring much needed change. By doing this, Lysander is helping wildlife, animals depend on trees for food and shelter and it is safeguarding our environment. By removing excess carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and converting it into our life-giving oxygen via photosynthesis, trees are crucial to the survival of our planet, and a vital element in maintaining the earth’s natural balance. We also use trees in summer and winter months as shelter from the sun or rain, and London Plane Trees are resistant to pollution and are effective filters trapping harmful pollutants on their leaves and bark. The Leo’s Box team really are on a mission to make a positive impact on the planet. Visit their website to find out more about them and to take a look at the subscriptions on offer. At The Chiswick Magazine, we picked Leo’s Box as a great idea for a Christmas gift for a loved one. Boxes start from £20.

We care about sleep We have now entered the winter months and you may have noticed a disruption to your sleep over the past few weeks, with difficulties getting to sleep, maintaining sleep or struggling to get up in the morning. This can impact on how you feel the next day, resulting in daytime tiredness and lethargy, lack of motivation and low mood.
LIGHT EXPOSURE One of the biggest influences on our sleep is light exposure and this is reduced in the winter months. Light exposure during the day is needed for the production of melatonin in the evening, the hormone that regulates the timing and duration of sleep. It is the contrast between light exposure during the day and during the evening that is recognised by the brain as a signal for sleep. In the winter, not only is there less sunlight but we also tend to spend more time indoors, so we miss out on natural daylight. With less daytime light exposure, melatonin concentrations are generally lower, and this can cause sleep disruption. In addition, the low level of light exposure may lead to feelings of tiredness during the day. This is because melatonin normally start to rise when light levels begin to dim in the evenings, a few hours before we go to sleep. So in the winter, with low levels of light exposure during the day, the timing of melatonin onset may be earlier, as the sleep systems in the brain become confused, leading to feelings of tiredness and lethargy. Tips from the experts: Try to spend more time outside in the winter months in order to get an adequate level of light exposure. Going for a walk during your lunch break is a good way to achieve this or walking/cycling to work or part of the way to work. Make sure your work and home environments are as light as possible during the day. Open your curtains and blinds as soon as you wake up in the morning and try to sit by a
Decem meceD
window at your place of work. In addition, dim your lights at home in the evening to encourage melatonin onset before you head off to bed. PHYSICAL HEALTH Most people are aware that we are more susceptible to colds and flu in the winter. This is not because cold temperatures cause these infections but because these viruses are able to survive better in colder environments. Another factor is that people spend longer indoors so are more likely to breathe in the same air as someone who already has an infection. In addition, the reduced exposure to sunlight leads to low levels of vitamin D and this can impair our immune system. The increased use of artificial heating in the winter produces hot, dry air and this dries out your mucus membranes, making your body more susceptible to infections such as colds or flu. Common symptoms of colds and flu are a blocked nose, sore throat, breathing problems, headaches, aching limbs and fever. Although infections can cause tiredness and an increased need for sleep, all these symptoms can disrupt your sleep making it harder to nod off or stay asleep. Adequate sleep is vital for effective immune function so these sleep disturbances can make you more vulnerable to colds and flu. Tips from the experts: Spend as much time outdoors to boost Vitamin D, serotonin and melatonin production. Prioritise your sleep to strengthen your immune system so it is fully prepared to fight infections. Make sure your diet includes plenty of Vitamin C and antioxidants, nutrients needed for immune functioning, by eating fruit and vegetables and drink plenty of water.

Tips from the experts: If you are working indoors then ensure that you are letting as much sunlight into your working life as possible by opening up the curtains and sitting next to a window. It is also important to keep in contact with friends and family members as regular interaction will help the process of feeling better Arrange meet ups for dinner or even an evening walk once a week. EXERCISE With the shorter days and colder temperatures, it’s hard to find the motivation to exercise in the winter, particularly if you are feeling tired. But regular, moderate exercise has been associated with better quality sleep and an increase in the portion of deep sleep you
Decem meceD
get in a night. It also is a great stress buster as it reduces some of the stress hormones that are released by the flight or fight response. Tips from the experts: Remind yourself that any exercise is worth doing for the sake of your physical and mental health but if you can combine this with a burst of natural daylight this is a double benefit to your sleep and energy levels. However, don’t exercise too close to bedtime because this can actually disrupt your sleep as your body takes several hours to cool down to a level optimal for sleep. TEMPERATURES With temperatures dropping in the winter, we tend to compensate by turning up the heating. While it is important that your bedroom is not too cold, environments that are too hot can be more disruptive to your sleep. In addition, artificial heating produces hot, dry air and this can lead to dehydration and dry out your mucus membranes, reducing your ability to fight infections which may disturb your sleep. If you have your heating on at night you may wake with a dry mouth or feeling thirsty and then not be able to return to sleep. Tips from the experts: Aim for a cool bedroom in the range of 16-18 degrees Celsius as this is the optimum temperature level for sleep. Turn your heating off at night and use duvets, blankets and bed linen made from natural fibres such as cotton and wool as these will regulate your body temperature more efficiently than man made fibres.

MENTAL HEALTH Reduced levels of sunlight and vitamin D have been linked to low mood, irritability, fatigue and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This is a mood disorder characterised by depressive episodes that occur in the autumn and winter. Besides a persistent low mood, other symptoms of SAD include a lack of energy and feeling sleepy during the day, sleeping for longer and finding it hard to get up in the morning. These symptoms can in turn disrupt an individual’s natural sleep rhythms, so it is more difficult to sleep at nighttime. Many people notice a lack of energy in the winter and occasional low mood but for SAD sufferers these symptoms are more persistent and debilitating. SAD can be treated with light therapy so speak to your doctor if this is something that you think seriously affects you.
