The main aim is an idea of the VERTICAL CONNECTION of scattered territories. In red on this diagram are highlighted the prime actions: boat connection of Trieste and Muggia, funicular road up to the residential part on the hills and organization of the new CONTEMPORARY CITY CENTER, contains existing sport facilities, university campus, shopping mall, offices towers and multifunctional space for spending leisure time.

The investigated location has been observed from an aerial viewpoint, where a strong pattern distinction has been emphasized. On the location different types of built samples can be recognized according to their shape, footprint, location and space organization.

The Mediteranean city of Trieste has a recognizable characteristic of important sea harbor in northeastern Italy. The territory analyzed comprehends the eastern part of the city of Trieste, on the borders with Slovenia and extending south until the city of Muggia. The interpretation of this designed area shows the pedestrian blocked paths at the areas where the big industrial sites are located. The complicated situation perceived has a problem with walkability and accessibility along the coast line. This territory slices in four main stripes: THE COASTLINE, THE INDUSTRIAL AREA, THE CITY LIVABLE AREA AND THE GREEN NATURAL AREAS. In between, the lines represents the cutting features: THE HEAVY INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE MORPHOLOGY.

NETWORK STRATEGY

An important central area of the region

THE PROGRAM ANALYSIS represents the uses within different areas of the city. Through zooming in it was possible to perceive various activities that happen in a small context from a city USER PERSPECTIVE or how the person can perceive blocked spaces, services provided, differences between private and public spaces, public transportation reaching points and parking areas.

THE INTERPRETATION of the city of Trieste in schematic drawings shows the four main stripes: THE COASTLINE, THE INDUSTRIAL AREA, THE CITY LIVABLE AREA AND THE GREEN NATURAL AREAS. Also in between, the border lines represents cutting features: THE HEAVY INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE MORPHOLOGY. These «cuts» are the main obstacles for city users. People are not able to perceive the territory, use the coast line due to existence of borders. The question what are borders in the urban agglomeration and how to identify them is very complex.

The main purpose of this progect is THE CREATION OF NEW OPPORTUNITIES for the city population. In order to distinguish it I propose to open the LIVABLE CITY to a more closer relationship with the sea side, using the in between spaces and abbandoned areas. It is important that according to the morphological aspect, the built environment is in the direct relationship with a difficult «BLOCKING CONDITION». The geographical location and form of the built environment depend on the steepness of fall. One idea could be to infiltrate GREEN CORRIDORS from the hills toward the city.

BORDERS define geographic boundaries of political entities or legal jurisdictions, they can be NATURAL BORDERS constituted by the geographical features that present natural obstacles to communication or access. Nevertheless, borders are often classifed by whether or not they follow certain physical features on the earth. The question what are borders in the urban agglomeration and how do we identify them is very complex. The borders can be PHYSICAL ELEMENTS and on the opposite, VISUAL or IMAGINARY. Referring to physical aspects, the interpretation of the borders of the given area was based on the different elements: sea, industrial area, heavy infrastructure, livable area and green. The URBAN SPRAWL patterns refer to a situation where commercial, residential, institutional and industrial areas are separated from one another. Large tracts of land are devoted to a single use and are segregated from one another by green spaces and infrastructure. The spaces separating industrial from commercial, residential from natural is our analysis of borders.

An importante aim of the project is a solving transportation issues. The existing roads are not efficient for city users and by CREATING NEW MOBILITY SYSTEMS OPTION - like using ferry boat connections - the distance between Trieste and Muggia shrinks considerably. The interpretation of this territory clarified the role of the water as a barr ier or underused path. Through this analysis I try to show how distances and barriers could be smaller by introducing new models or points of access for transportation systems.

PIPE AND SPONGE ANALOGY

ENVOLVING NETWORKS

In this analogy, the PIPE refers to the heavy or thick infrastructure routs (strongly hierarchized). The SPONGE presents the network of thin mobility routs. The thick structures, or pipes, are only open to the territory in a few specific and well- defined ENTRANCE and EXIT POINTS. The thick structures isolate the flow of traffic from the surrounding environment, and vice versa, whereas the thin structure allows users to relate with every point in the territory. Users have the freedom to stop, turn, or even go the opposite direction at any time, and from one point in the network, it is possible to reach any other point. SPEED ANALYSIS

CONCEPTUAL STRAREGY

TREATMENT PHASE

I used the PIPE and SPONGE metaphor in order to analyze the physical configuration of the contemporary infrastructure networks, and the CELLULAR STRUCTURE analogy to represent the built and un-built human environment, as affected by the road grid. THREE SPEEDS IN AN EVOLUTIONARY CONTEXT I identifed THREE SPEEDS in the urban environment of north Milan. The STILL SPEED refers to the open green areas - the natural environment. The SLOW SPEED represents the historical networks.The FAST SPEED shows the heavy infrastructure routs - the contemporary environment.

CELLULAR STRUCTURE ANALOGY This project focuses on the LAST GREEN SPACES in the territory, permeated by the light thin networks and fragmented by the thick ones. The last green spaces are not just only as preservation areas, but as PROJECT AREAS. I divided these green spaces into different categories of recurring patterns of homo geneous areas, which call CELLS. Arterward I attempted connecting the green spaces in order to create a CONTINUOUS NETWORK. Finally, the two parallel interpretation tools are used together to understand the territory as a whole, and then three ABACUSES of implementation strategies were developed: ACTIONS ON NETWORKS, ACTIONS ON CELLS, AND ACTIONS BETWEEN MULTIPLE CELLS AND NETWORKS.

In North Milan, the natural environment has been invaded by the historical environment of roads and cities, which in turn has become FRAGMENTED and DISRUPTED by the contemporary environment of thick infrastructures. Thus I recognized that the three speeds developed CHRONOLOGICALLY, starting with an OPEN GREEN ENVIRONMENT, moving to a thin network of HISTORICAL ROADS and CITY CENTERS, and finally resulting in a system of HIGH-SPEED INFRASTRUCTURE routs. ACTIONS ON NETWORKS

ABACUS FOR ACTIONS INSIDE CELLS DIFFUSED CELL

Inside the PROTECTED GREEN AREA all the roads will be slowed down to a sharable speed of 30km/h, so they can safely host all kinds of traffic flows - vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian. The inner roads will be physically slowed down thanks to physical devices like SIGNS, BUMPERS, CHICANES AND ELEVATED PAVEMENT ZONES. The only exceptions are the TWO NATIONAL HIGHWAYS and THE PEDEMONTANA, which will be maintained as FAST MOBILITY ROUTS because they belong to a wider scale mobility structure.

GREEN ROOF Put green roofs over big boxes where there are high rise buildings Using the analogy of the ”Pipe and Sponge” this diagram illustrates the INTERACTION between the thick and thin networks in our territory. The diagram also shows the distance between nodes. In the thick networks, the distance between nodes, or junctions, is larger (shown in kilometers). In the thin networks, the distance between nodes, or intersections, is much smaller (shown in meters). This means that the users of the THICK NETWORKS can only relate with the territory in SPECIFIC LOCATIONS, while the users of the THIN NETWORKS can relate with EVERY POINT in the territory. The pipe creates a HIERARCHICAL NETWORK of primary and secondary routs. A negative aspect of the system is its INVASIVE STRUCTURE. It cuts ecological, agricultural, and wildlife patterns, and disturbs the human environment. The sponge structure interacts well with a territory. These are the roads that connect to houses, factories, felds,linking the natural, rural, and built environments.

As a result the map shows the actions between the multiple cells, where the GREEN PARK SYSTEM is well connected , and actions between cells and networks create a homogeneous comfortable zone. In a scale of green, the different “landscape� interventions compose by different kind of plant elements, according to the created abacus , following specific situations on cells. [NO]ISE HOUSE MOSCOW SPECIAL TYPE OF RESIDENTIAL UNIT WHICH PROTECTS FROM THE HIGHWAY’S NOISE BLOCK STRUCTURE The construction site is located on the north of Moscow and occupies 30 hectares.

There are 80 parking places along the back facade and a covered three-floors garage is situated in 300 m.

From the east side the territory frames by a busy hightway, that connects the district with Moscow city center. Hence as a part of the Bachelor thesis, I developed a design of the residential block of flats, the main issue of which was an idea of noise isolation.

An important intervention in the distric is a redevelopment of the banks of river Shodnya. Bringing new green structure, bike sharing and sport activities allows not only to rise up the level of the built environmet for the inhabitance but also attract new visitor of the city, making this neighborhood visible.

At the beginning of the work, I have collected interviews of people from the surrounding neighborhoods, which helped to identify the main disadvantages of the area. The major problems expressed are the followings : lack of public places, amenities, problems with a parking, unfriendly environment.

There are a school and a nursery school in 400 m. The project distric is mix used, which guarantees to the inhabitants equal access to services and public activities.

PLANS The building layout has different types of apartments and spaces on the ground floor corresponding with PEOPLE’S NEEDS. As a consequence of the work on interviews, on the ground floor of the No noise House there are different types of working activities , for example , dry-cleaning and reparing shop, public library and offices. Children playground, places for yoga and sharing spaces are situated in the courtyard.

Each floor has four types of flats. The TIPOLOGY IS DIFFERENT due to the personal factors - size of the family, amount of sq.m. wanted. It is very important to give for customers the possibility to chose layout according personal needs. On the last floor there are two-storey LOFT with a private roof. CROSS SECTION

House plays a role of a BARRIER between two «worlds» : NOISY HIGHWAY and LIVABLE COURTYARD with a park, children playgrounds and sharing spaces. The terraced structure opens up towards green areas and new surrounding development. From the structural point of view, the house is composed out of TWO ELEMENTS - the right part, where all services, such as elevators, staircases allocate, and the left part so called «main body of the buiding». It is made of PILLARS and RAINSCREEN CLADDING facade.

During 8 years studying in the art school, I have learnt different drawing techniques by guidelines of talented painters. I experienced ink, pencil, aquarelle and oil drawings; practiced batik, sculpture and handicraft of miniature painting. In 2009 my pencil drawing of Socrates was exposed in the art museum of Obninsk, Russia. This rich experience has changed my view on how to perceive and feel the world of art and architecture by different Cities are in reality great camps of the living and dead where many elements remain like signals, symbols, cautions. When the holiday is over, what remains of the architecture is scarred and the sand consumes the street again. There is nothing left but to resume with a certain obstinacy the reconstruction of elements and instruments in expectation of another holiday. [ Aldo Rossi, A scientific Autobiography ]
