DAN SQUIRES It was interesting to read this week that consumers are embracing technology within retail although there are still a fair few retailers out there who still don’t have a strategy in place to cope with this rising demand. According to Fujitsu’s Tech in a Transforming Britain Report, 46% of Brits believed that Augmented Reality (AR) would positively impact retail with 22% indicating that Virtual Reality (VR) would also benefit the industry. The report went on to suggest that 70% of customers already think that technology is changing retail with 45% stating that it has made a more positive shopping experience. The ‘embrace change’ and ‘embrace technology’ phrases have been banded about over the past year, as plenty of businesses have had to absorb challenging markets. The cry to actually ‘embrace’ this change into a more technological future is gaining traction but the report highlighted that only 50% of retailers have a digital strategy, meaning the other half are still trailing behind. Retailers, manufacturers and designers within the furniture industry can use new technology to their advantage, with AR in particular an option proving to showcase it has legs for furniture businesses to adopt. Furniture giant IKEA and online powerhouse Wayfair are two examples of businesses that have taken the concept on board over the last few years with apps that allow users to manipulate furniture in their own room sets. More recently, Cabinet Maker has been talking to a number of providers including ThinkAR who use a 3D model platform that can generate object size accuracy of 98% when using its app. 2018 could be the year where this type of technology becomes further mainstream, so retailers and manufacturers alike that are still unfamiliar to the concept, most probably should begin to conduct their own research into how new technology can help their business. Another topic of late that has peaked my interest was the final roundup of figures from the Office of National Statistics that indicated a growth in furniture retail sales during January, going against earlier indicators from the BRC and the CBI who both outlined that furniture retailers had ‘struggled’ in the month. What this does highlight is that the market continues to be uncertain with plenty of mixed data and views spanning the industry and wider. One thing that is for certain is the positive attitude on display during the January Furniture Show this year. Read our full review of the show in this issue, and with the standard of products showcased, I have no doubt that as the year unfolds, furniture sales will continue to grow. And finally, the subject of fire safety is always a hot topic within the furniture industry and it was encouraging to read how seriously sofa specialist ScS has taken the new FIRA Upholstery scheme. Ian Allcock, compliance manager at ScS, spoke to Cabinet Maker on how proud he and ScS are at leading the way in becoming the first national retailer to be named as a certified company. Check out the Last Word for his full brief. Fire safety, as with every standard that applies to furniture, is arguably one of the most important and it will be interesting to see how many upholstery businesses follow suit in the year ahead. As I said, we all need to embrace the change.

INTERIORS BOSS JAILED FOLLOWING FRAUD INVESTIGATION The boss of former interior design company Jane Jobson (Contracts) Ltd has been jailed. Jane Jobson had denied fraudulent trading as well as aiding her partner Terence Naylor who was an undischarged bankrupt. Previously, Mr Naylor had pleaded guilty to being involved in the management of Jane Jobson (Contracts) Ltd while undischarged bankrupt and fraudulent trading, as well as to charges made against him in relation to Jane Jobson (Interior Design) Ltd. Jane Jobson (Interior Design) Ltd had entered into liquidation in March 2012, whilst Jane Jobson (Contracts) Ltd was incorporated in February 2012, which suffered the same fate in January 2014. Both businesses combined owed creditors £500,000, with the majority of £400,000 being owed under its

most recent company. However, Mr Naylor failed to attend a sentencing hearing at Warwick Crown Court back in December last year, which was later revealed he had committed suicide. In a recent court hearing, Jane Jobson was found guilty of intentional fraudulent trading and knowingly aiding Mr Naylor in the management of the company. The court heard that she showed no remorse for her dishonesty and was sentenced to jail for two years and three months. Simon Davis, prosecutor, said that both defendants were ‘equal trading partners’ and ‘knew what the other was doing’. They took large deposits from customers subsequently failing to ‘order goods or do work’.

Furniture retail sales show modest growth in January

Furniture retail sales in January increased on last year but fell compared to the previous month. According to the latest January 2018 figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the total value of furniture and lighting sales declined 21.4% to £1.1bn from £1.4bn in December 2017. This marked the end of two consecutive months of growing sales but the rate was higher compared to the same time last year. Compared to January 2016, furniture and lighting sales increased by 10% from £1bn. Floorcoverings retail sales fell for a third straight month by 0.8% to £135.7m from £136.7m in December. Compared to last year, carpet retail sales significantly improved 25% from £108.2m. In overall terms, the quantity bought in the retail Industry during January increased by 1.6%. The total amount spent within retail in January represented £28.2bn, increasing by 4.4% compared to January 2016. In January, online sales saw a decrease in its proportion of all seasonally adjusted retailing in January 2018 when compared with December 2017; accounting for 16.5% of all retail. The year-on-year increase of 9.1% in total online retailing continues the pattern of growth but at a much slower pace than previous years when January 2017 increased by 19.2%. Rhian Murphy, ONS senior statistician, said: “Retail sales growth was broadly flat at the beginning of the New Year with the longerterm picture showing a continued slowdown in the sector. This can partly be attributed to a background of generally rising prices. “Growth in the quantity of sporting equipment, games and toys being bought was offset by falling food sales when compared with the same month a year earlier.”

Many people still don’t know the relationship we have with the woodworking sector and how their time, skills and funding could change the lives of many ex-servicemen and women that, as a result of serving their country, have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses. “Exhibitions like this offer us a great opportunity to educate visitors on our woodworking shops and recovery centres, whilst also helping us to engage with potential employers who could aid the future careers of our beneficiaries. They also give us a platform to find willing volunteers and companies that can help us to inspire and support our cause.” Lisa Campagnola, event director for the W Exhibition and Elements addsed: “2016 was the first time that Help for Heroes took part in the show, and I’m really looking forward to welcoming them back in September. We are extremely focused on supporting the growth of the furniture manufacturing industry and promoting talent in the sector.”

Homeware and fashion chain Laura Ashley has reported a decline in sales and profits during a ‘challenging’ first six months. According to its latest trading update for the 26 weeks to 31 December 2017, total group sales were down 7.7% to £134.7m from £146m, with total like-for-like retail sales down by 0.5%. UK retail sales also fell 7.8% to £122.9m from £133.4m, as the company confirmed six store closures during the period. Within its categories, furniture sales were down 9% with likefor-like sales also down 4.4%. Laura Ashley said that despite the ‘difficult half for furniture’ it had seen positive signs from new ranges. Its home accessories division also reported a downturn in sales by 3% with like-for-like sales up by 4% as lighting recorded ‘significant growth’. Online sales increased 5.1% to £26.9m from £25.6m, whilst overall pre-tax profit fell 44.8% to £4.3m from £7.8m. Tan Sri Dr Khoo Kay Peng, chairman, said: “Trading conditions have continued to be challenging during the first six months of the year. The impact felt due to the weakening of Sterling, year on year, was the most significant single factor in the fall of profit before tax. “Despite these challenges, our online performance remains strong, achieving growth of 5.1% and we look forward to the implementation of a new digital platform during the second half. We expect that this will help us to deliver further growth with its enhanced functionality.”

|N E W S Homewares retailer trials in store mattress offer as half year sales grow

Furniture and homewares retailer Dunelm has reported a growth in half year sales as its Worldstores acquisition boosts performance. According to its latest trading update for the 26 weeks ended 30 December 2017, total sales rose 18.4% to £545.4m from £460.5m against the same period last year. Total like-for-like sales were also up 6% with store likefor-like sales increasing 3.5%. Online like-for-like sales rose 36.8% with total online revenues now accounting for 18.5% of sales, up from 11.7% last year. Dunelm recorded a pre-tax profit (post-exceptional costs) of £56.3m, up by 0.7% from £55.9m. The company said the integration of the Worldstores acquisition is ‘progressing well’, with ‘cost and efficiency programmes on track’ and the benefits of extended ranges on Dunelm.com sales ‘being achieved’. Dunelm added: “We have seen a weaker sales performance in the legacy Worldstores business (including the transitional Dunelm Extra website). The scale of the opportunity to fully integrate Worldstores’ capabilities into Dunelm remains compelling.” The company also added that it has been on a drive to increase reasons for customers to shop with the brand, which has led to the expansion of its furniture category. Dunelm said it has launched a new trial format for furniture including mattresses in stores with the early results looking ‘promising’, adding: “We will monitor this closely and listen carefully to customer feedback before making further roll-out decisions.” Furthermore, the retailer has confirmed it plans to invest in a new made to measure facility in Leicester to ‘transform its capability’ to deliver bespoke curtains and blinds with shorter lead times. In the first half, Dunelm completed four major refits in its new store format as well as trialling smaller refits focusing on key departments with plans to roll these modules out to more stores in the second half of the year. The company confirmed the opening of 10 new stores. Andy Harrison, chairman, commented: “The strength of our customer proposition has helped us to deliver a good sales performance in the first half, with like-for-like sales growth of 6.0% and total sales growth of 18.4%, boosted by the Worldstores acquisition. We have made good strategic progress, best highlighted by the 36.8% like-for-like growth in our online sales (including reserve and collect), which now account for 18.5% of our total sales, up from 11.7% last year. “Our gross margin in the first half was lower due to the mix effect of acquired Worldstores sales and a higher proportion of end of season and seasonal products. We expect a more stable margin performance in the second half, which, together with reduced losses and increased integration benefits from the acquisition, should deliver good full year profit growth.”

“Consumers have a clear appetite for technology and innovation and are ready and wanting more. When it comes to retail, consumers already say that they would be happy to be served by a robot in a supermarket or to have an automated machine to deliver their goods. This presents an exciting opportunity for retailers, who may have thought such futuristic technologies would have scared customers away, when actually it will entice consumers towards them more. “There’s a clear disconnect between how retailers view themselves in this wave of technological change we undergoing right now. Instead of focusing on how technology can improve their offering and further loyalty amongst their customers, many are focused on the increased competitions and the disruption to their sector.”

JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW

SHOW The much anticipated furniture event at the Birmingham NEC was just as it promised: a January Furniture Show at its enticing best. Spread out over four days from 21 to 24 January, seeing over 20,000 visitors and with over 500 exhibitors showing off their designs, the show was hailed a great success. Providing such a beautifully diverse range of upholstery designs, homeware gadgets and bedroom ensembles, it surely was going to be an incredible four days for visitors and exhibitors alike. The fourth instalment of the show saw visitor numbers equal the 2017 edition, despite the inclement weather threatening to keep furniture fans and their wallets away. The 2018 show was only the third to be spread over four days, following the suggestion that a Sunday should be added to the show for the best exposure. From the look of the number of impressive stands for this year’s event, it was unfathomable that it could be set up solely on the Saturday. In order to add ease and prevent stand congestion, visitors received Poken badges in a UK event first. Each company’s stand was equipped with a similar badge that visitors could scan their own badges on, signing them up to receive company information. The technology’s maiden UK voyage proved the ultimate success, with Ireland-based mattress and sofa manufacturer TCS receiving the most visitor hits at over 10,000.

As it was my first time attending the show, I was eager to introduce myself to as many of the companies who feature in Cabinet Maker as I could manage in the short window of chance. It was such a fantastic opportunity to finally put faces to names and have a quick chat about the show and how happy companies were with the show. From what I heard, it was all positive! And it seems this was a widespread opinion throughout the show’s five halls. When I first arrived at the event, I wasn’t sure what to expect as a new fledgling in the furniture field, but found myself instantly swept up in the buzz coming from the arena: much like a detective gathering evidence or the attending throngs on the hunt for a bargain or two, I was on the hunt for evidence of noticeable trends. I wasn’t disappointed. This year’s edition certainly had some big statements to make about the year ahead. For instance, I quickly noticed a focus on nature, with several companies such as Tetrad and All Sofas Ltd bringing greens and floral patterns to life in a superb array of velvets, wools, soft leathers and oaks. The 2018 show saw a brand new area of Hall 2 for Premium Design set aside for Fabrics and Soft Furnishings, including curtains and blinds, which worked in my favour as I prowled the corridors. Modern but with a twist of retro was also a recurring theme that, carrying a timeless echo, was evident throughout many

Sherborne Sherborne Upholstery were delighted with the success of their new introductions at the NEC. Manufacturers and consumers have simultaneously moved for more use of natural materials and the responses have seen a wealth of products that are 100% recyclable. Not only this, but there was also a visible emphasis on companies championing upholstery-cleaning technology. Belgium based FibreGuard, a debutant at this year’s show, boasted their durable, easy-to-clean fabrics and supported the claim that violet would be 2018’s Pantone Colour of the Year. While the 2018 fixture was largely enjoyable, there was one incident that momentarily hampered the show. In direct disregard to anti-copying laws, one company sadly had to be ejected from the premises. Three visiting members from the Chinese furniture manufacturer Dongguan Guanding Furniture Craft Company were asked to leave the show after it transpired they were illegally taking photographs and recording. After ACID’s head of membership Simon Bull contacted the JFS management team, it turned out that approximately 1700 images had been taken without permission using mobile phones and video recording equipment. It’s a travesty that this happened, but testament to the eagle-eyed and quickresponse team at Anti-Copying In Design (ACID) that the situation was dealt with so efficiently and effectively. As a result of the incident, show organisers planned to meet with ACID to discuss the tightening of the no photography policy in order to protect Intellectual Property.

hosted by Dids Macdonald OBE, CEO at ACID and Niall Head-Rapson, director of leading Intellectual Property solicitors McDaniel & Co. While brief, the seminar included a comprehensive talk on the basics of how to stay IP savvy to ensure your designs aren’t copied, and what to do if you discover they are. The criteria were necessarily stringent and many people attending the seminar were surprised to hear what counted as “their” design and what had insufficient protection for copyright laws. Award winning German bedroom furniture manufacturer, Wiemann, celebrated a positive start to the year, following a successful few days at the January Furniture Show. “It was another solid year for Wiemann at the 2018 exhibition,” says Simon Hewitt, md of UK sole agents Litmus Furniture. With over 18 ranges on display, including eight brand new designs, it was the simple display and selling solutions that were taking the buyers’ fancy. For instance, the All In comes with two accessories packages – basic and premium; while Sydney in oak, taps into ongoing British interest with its more traditional wood finish.

“Our two new finishes, pebble grey and hickory oak also did well,” adds Simon. “Plus, we saw a fantastic response to our Kansas range, the best-selling non-promo collection on display. “Now we’re looking forward to following some great leads with new accounts over the coming weeks – and of course capitalising on Cayenne winning the show award in the bedroom category.”

Poken is there to help make sure no one gets missed out – gone are the days when stands couldn’t cope. PREMIER Ta k i n g a l o o k a t design trends

from the January Furniture Show

For a first timer at the January Furniture Show, the decision to make was either ‘feel overwhelmed with all the choice’, or ‘adopt an open mind and get stuck in’. I chose the latter. The more ‘baptisms of fire’ in life as a feature writer, the better. (Or perhaps not, if FIRA has anything to do with it…) I knew before arriving that there would be a vast number of stands to peruse, but what I imagined hadn’t been anywhere near as

impressive as the marvellous displays I was greeted with at Birmingham’s NEC. I made a beeline for the Premier Design Halls and Accessories stands determined to find something to shout about. One of the main things that came to this writer’s attention was the size of the accessories. The phrase that sprang to mind was “go big or go home”. Big, beautiful and bold has undoubtedly been provident in furniture accessory design and it was even more noticeable this year. This could be down to the fact that manufacturers have needed to make products smaller in keeping with rooms in the home becoming smaller and spaces decreasing in size. It can be argued that the boldness of larger accessories accentuates upholstery in the room and gives a distinctive up-market feel to the room.

Dar Lighting boasted a runway of 48

individual styles of lighting on display that really took off well. (Thankfully I’m not talking about the stiletto-wearers moving around the stand here.) It was obvious that these designs were the product of multiple

cultures, with handmade lampshades in ‘reactive green’ from Portugal and some stunning bold Indian styles in light fixtures. Easy-fit lighting ranges, such as the ceiling collections displayed at Dar, have hit the market in abundance, punctuating the need for design to be more accessible for homemakers wanting to add a touch of elegance to their light systems. Accessories in great volume could be found as I made my way through the halls. Those in favour of ‘natural’ surroundings came out in force for the show, as grand displays of intricately designed oak figurines and tables with as much personality as the people on the stand were easily visible and garnered plenty of attention. Companies such as Camelot Pictures, Besp-Oak and Ancient Mariner Furniture were keen to show off the many different shapes and designs wood can be manipulated into when you know how. It was over to Tetrad for statement sofas galore. 2018 sees them celebrate their 50th anniversary in the trade and it promises to be a tremendous year for the Preston-based manufacturer. With true Tetrad prowess, their Constable sofa range delighted passers-by at the show and in keeping with colour trends, their blue and yellow velvet designs were bright, gregarious and caught more than a few eyes at the JFS.

Velvet’s in: first time exhibitors Spink & Edgar The January Furniture Show’s main message surrounding design was one not to be ignored. With black, yellow and white Anti Copying in Design (ACID) stickers and posters on each and every stand, it’s difficult to imagine how one company (Chinese furniture manufacturer Dongguan Guanding Furniture Craft Company) had to be ejected from the show premises due to infringement of Intellectual Property laws. As Dids Macdonald, ACID CEO says: “Theft is theft whether it is a wallet or watch or another’s intellectual property. Any Brexit-proof strategy should include

EU registration for designs and an EU registered trademark. If the Withdrawal Bill does what it says it will, there will have to be similar IP protection for UK designers and manufacturers and, at the moment, both offer protection in the 27 other member states, so it’s time to get cracking and think about your current and future IP strategy.” Here’s hoping that the offending company take a good look at themselves in a suitably intricate mirror and see the light.

diary entries during this year's January Fu r n i t u re S h ow.

Set up and Get up Day I just love the January Furniture Show but whoever said “size doesn’t matter”…. clearly hasn’t worked on the biggest exhibition stand in Hall 1!

braving the freezing temperatures and…… voila! A beauty was unveiled at last! With my fantastic sales team all fired up and raring to

This has to be the most exciting week of my working year although it brings a whole host of emotions from trepidation to excitement all wrapped up in four fantastic days.

Build it and they will come, they said... The famous show eyelashes donned, blister plasters at the ready, pedometer switched on ..and we’re off!

It all starts with “set up” and trying to squeeze 24 beautiful room sets into their temporary home and make it an enticing and inspirational display for our deserving customers. We certainly like a challenge at Westbridge and this year was no exception. We only just avoided having “wet paint” signs up at the eleventh hour with all hands to the deck armed with paint brushes,

go there was nothing left to do but head to the hotel and plan my show wardrobe.

Will they come and will they buy? Yes they did on both accounts - phew! We are very privileged to have a fantastic stand in Hall 1 but as a non branded British manufacturer we have to work even harder to attract our customers to visit us early. Design Director, Steve Olds worked his magic again and the Westbridge Design Team delivered 10 new ranges stretching across all four brands Spirit, Artisan, Westbridge and Elements. And what an amazing response from our lovely customers, at some points during the show our stand was so busy you couldn’t move. Love the buzz! Our annual “best seller” wager was back on and the contender after day one was MARCELLEO - a voluptuous family friendly Westbridge model in new soft handle fabrics in cream and green (one of the new pantones of the season), which was followed closely by DIXIE, a clean scandi style sofa range of perfect proportions. As day one comes to an end - Steps walked in stilletos: 9738 (7km), Eyelashes lost – 0, Blisters on feet - zero. Happy Team - Tick!

Nichola walked over 30,000 steps in the four days at the January Furniture Show!

Day 2 – The Celts have it. New shoes could be a bad idea! It’s always wonderful to welcome our Scottish and Irish customers to Birmingham and day one and two was certainly their time. Kevin Daley our Scottish representative was rushed off his feet. The morning flurry of snow didn’t put people off and we were once again busy little bees plus we have a few new contenders for poll position. FarmHouse Luxe - a gorgeous leather fabric range hosting aniline hide, British wool and Italian velvets and very generous proportions what’s not to like! And by contrast our more compact Artisan Ranges SOHO and COZY SNUG proving to be very popular, due to their terrific fabric and leather offers and perfect sizes for the smaller homes and spaces, which is bang on trend with compact living. It is proving to be more and more important for consumers and therefore retailers to buy British and considering every piece of our furniture, including our Artisan leather/ fabric range is hand made in the UK we certainly have something to shout about. My feet remind me it must be the nearing the end of the day. How did it go from 9am to 4pm in the blink of an eye? Steps walked in stilletos: 11233 (8km), Eyelashes lost – at least two, Blisters on feet- just the one. Happy Team - Tick!

Half Way Mark Away with the glamour, flat shoes are the order of the day. Who would have thought that this would turn out to be a busier day than yesterday.

"WHAT HAS SURPRISED ME THE MOST IS THAT THE GENERAL FEEL FROM OUR CUSTOMERS IS ONE OF RESILIENCE AND OPTIMISM FOR THE COMING YEAR."

We have taken orders from a large number of customers both loyal and new that have returned to the stand to see their local representative. Although my support team (imported from the office in Wales to help us ) have done a fantastic job of looking after people and of course offering champagne to ease the wait, there is no accounting for the strength of the relationships my Sales Team have with their respective customers who will patiently return time and again to specifically speak directly to them.

enough energy to do at least another day, plus we have more customers to see. Can I stay, please?

There is a real buzz around the gorgeous Darcy curved corner, in the most amazing “peacock” hues this stunning curved group will bring glamour and serious “wow” factor to any floor. Oh and Marcello and Dixie are neck and neck in the winners league today.

What has surprised me the most is that the general feel from our customers is one of resilience and optimism for the coming year. There is no doubt that it will be at the very least an interesting trading year .We have the product, the will and the drive to make it a good one. So let’s get stuck in and make it happen.

Steps walked: 9417 (6.8km), Eyelashes lost – lost count, Blisters on feet - none, but I’m wearing my slippers to dinner tonight! Happy Team - Tick! Another Day please! As most people are ready for the show to end, I absolutely don’t want it to…. I have

I managed to escape for a quick look around the halls. I was excited to see our sister company Spink & Edgar and their new launch as well as some familiar faces and generally good British Upholstery.

Nothing left to do but take the team to the casino and see if we can be as successful there as we have been at the NEC. Until next year, thank you for a great January Furniture Show.

KEEPING IT IN THE

Cabinet Maker catches up with Breasley about recent developments in the company’s

structure and why

the new Salus natural range has been so p o p u l a r.

42 | 23rd February 2018

Due to Stuart Hibbert retiring as managing director in mid-2017, there was a job opening at Breasley Group. Now joint managing directors, Darren and Mike Crowshaw might be seen as ‘the new boys on the block’, but, in reality, they have been involved with the bed industry for a considerable number of years, and they are keen to stress the importance of being part of a family run business. Their father, Alan Crowshaw, started the business back in 1973 with his partner Pete Walker, building the company to be one of the UK’s largest independent foam converters. Darren started on the factory floor some 17 years ago, which means that he has been fully involved with the development and production of Breasley’s vacuum packed mattress business since its inception in 2005. Mike joined the business a couple of years later following a career in software development.

Now, over 40 years on, Alan has taken on the role of Breasley’s CEO, and is still very much ‘hands on’ when it comes to the day to day running of the business. Mike commented: “We have major investment plans for machinery and production lines at both our Derby and Manchester factories, so it’s great knowing we have our Dad’s expertise and full support behind us should we need it.” Constant innovation is
at the heart of Breasley’s philosophy in mattress and divan manufacture, and this is what has helped Breasley to become one the fastest growing independent mattress manufacturers in the UK. “I saw a quote recently – ‘Nothing remains constant except change itself’ – and that sums things up, really,” says Darren. “2017 saw a number of changes at Breasley, but

Breasley has expanded the team to kick 2018 off in style. Breasley products have been on the market since 1973 sales team, indicative of the increasing demand Breasley are seeing in recent months. Joining Rob’s team in a newly created role of key accounts manager is Louise Chung, whose previous experience as head of sales for Matza & Co will no doubt see her bring a wealth of knowledge to the position. Every industry comes with its challenges to overcome and two years of unprecedented increases in the price of foam has seen many manufacturers move to deal with the subsequent task of keeping price points competitive. The Breasley business is confident that it rose to the challenge in the finest style with the launch of the brand new 2018 Salus Natural Collection. Designed to deliver on competitive price points, quality and innovation, the Salus brand underwent an allover transformation. The finished project was a combination of pocket spring counts, comfort fillings

using natural products including lambs’ wool, bamboo, alpaca and pashmina and specialist finishes. Commenting on the new range, Darren said: “The new Salus Bed Collection offers superb comfort and quality at very competitive price points, plus we are extending the breadth of our Uno vacuum packed range to include several new models over the coming months, with exciting new technology and also a natural story. For us, innovation is about knowing when to change and listening to our customers’ needs and being able to adapt to market requirements.” The company is continuing to support the major trade exhibitions throughout 2018, including AIS, Minerva and the Bed Show, and is confident that it is the right decision. “The January Furniture Show proved to be a very positive start to the New Year for us, and the buyers were out in force, despite the weather conditions! Tuesday was probably the highlight, when Hall 5 seemed at its busiest and had a real buzz about it. The Show opens Breasley up to a much wider audience, which in turn brings some interesting enquiries and leads as well as new business, so our plans are to rebook for JFS 2019,” said Darren. RE TAIL|LONDON FABRIC SHOW GOOD COMPANY

WHEN THE C U R T A I N On Monday 26 February, big game players of the utmost talent will be gracing the box at Stamford Bridge. The names of the hosts for this event will hope to inspire many to sow the seeds and dreams for another year at the top of their game. Chelsea Football Club is once again opening its doors for the annual London Fabric Show, taking place in the executive boxes in the ground’s West Stand. The prestigious event, hosted by the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is hailed by many in the furniture industry as far more exciting than the previous month’s transfer deadline day. For one thing, this will take place over two days. And, most importantly, the fabrics on show here don’t end up covered in sweat and mud. Fabrics such as chenilles, linens, wools, silks, velvets, cashmeres, cottons and tweeds will adorn stand upon stand in the executive boxes, Hollins Suite and Tambling Suite, with world-leading producers offering soft furnishings manufacturers a plethora of brandnew designs in different styles and textures to take away and turn into more beautiful upholstery creations fit for catalogues and showrooms all over the UK and Europe. 44 | 23rd February 2018

The event began several years ago primarily as a line of entry for Belgian companies to introduce their products to the UK market, taking place in a London hotel, but has since developed in nature, requiring the venue to change and aptly represent the show’s success despite hard times hitting the UK market. While economic uncertainty encircled the country, support was strong in the fabric-manufacturing contingent and with multiple BFM members calling for continuation, it was decided: the show must go on! As Kay Ryan said about the Fabric of Life, “it is very stretchy,” and the show is no different, thanks to many more European countries stretching out over the water to join the London occasion. Belgium and the UK, founders of the fabric festivities in the executive boxes, are joined by companies from Turkey, Spain, Italy and Portugal. On the choice of location, Jackie Bazeley, managing director for BFM, said: “The London Fabric Show is held at a large venue bursting with personality and it provides a great back-drop for exhibitors and visitors.”

As we’d like you to feel prepared before the show, we’ve had a look at which companies will be in the line-up at the fourth consecutive show. The number of exhibitors is up yet again – with 37 highend fabric producers due to arrive this year compared to last year’s 35 – so in this case, it’s quality AND quantity that will be on display come Monday morning through to Tuesday afternoon. The BFM is pleased to add five new faces to the starting line-ups for 2018, each hoping to win over visitors to the show. Girones and Castilla Textil from Spain, Imatex from Italy, LUKS Velvet from Turkey and Acquitaine from the UK will all be adding their design finesse to the European fixture. Weaving their way back to London for repeat appearances will be a strong contingent of both Belgian and Turkish names, with Annabel Textiles, Bru Textiles, Symphony Mills and Ter Molst featuring for the Belgians. Boyteks, Adoksan, Aydin Tekstil, Cizmeci Textile, Kets Tekstil, Marsteks Tekstil, Turman, Yakar Textile and more will be bringing high-end, refutable Turkish design to the floor.

RE TAIL|LONDON FABRIC SHOW GOOD COMPANY Green Street Fabrics will also be coming from Belgium, which will please buyers on the lookout for natural products, as, while producing fine rugs and curtains and lying in the centre of the flax and linen industry, they’re also the last surviving flax mill in Europe, in testament to their longevity and sheer determination to bring natural products to the market. The 62% increase in show registrations for the 2017 outing of the LFS resulted in a substantial increase of visitors, up by 26% on 2016. The number of companies represented rose by almost 50%, signalling that this fabrics calendar fixture particularly emphasises the on-going importance to UK furniture manufacturers in having a fresh range of materials made by the most skilled and exclusive fabric producers and suppliers in Europe. How many times have you had to wait for images of products while they’re taken and had to delay decisions or publications? In what will be a maiden voyage for the London Fabric Show, a new technology will be demonstrated live throughout the show’s duration. Think computer games, but with furnishings and upholstery in place of people and weaponry. It has been announced that, in continued moves to connect the supply chain to the retailer, a new universal platform from Orbital Vision called enVision will allow the consumer to customise furniture with different fabrics and finishes online in full photo-realistic room sets. An online playground, with choices at your fingertips, to enable users

Executive boxes at the London Fabric show overlook the Stamford Bridge football ground to choose their favourite room-design, sofa, side table, rug, flooring, lighting and wallpaper. This ground-breaking technology can be integrated with the supply chain’s ERP system, which makes ordering furniture quicker and easier than previously possible. It won’t just be new exhibitors giving the show a fresher new look, but also the stadium itself. Visitors planning on coming to the 2018 show will benefit from the £1.5m Chelsea FC has spent on improvements to the ground’s West Stand. A new reception area, new lighting, flooring, decoration and fixtures will make the exhibition space brighter, smarter and more comfortable for both visitors and exhibitors. Jackie said: “It is a small show but is very important to UK manufacturers, particularly of upholstery and also beds and soft furnishings too. (Virtually all of the UK manufacturers who exhibited at JFS will visit Marsteks Tekstil update their products to stay up to date with the market trends

the London Fabric Show. Increasingly, we do see large retail group buyers too, who wish to select fabrics for their own name models.)” Due to the UK threat level listed as high, the ground has strict security measures in place, and anyone attending without registering prior to the event will not be permitted entry. So, if you’ve still got a case of the winter blues that need shifting, the colour is plentiful, the venue is Stamford Bridge, and the date is 2627 February. Register your attendance now and kick off next week with one of the most popular events in the UK’s furniture industry diary. Don’t forget to take your Cabinet Maker with you!

Cabinet Maker settles in with Kettle’s sales

Ainge for a cuppa

in order to discuss the January

Fu r n i t u re S h ow.

The Chair Collection has been expanded for 2018

48 | 23rd February 2018

When we last spoke to Kettle Interiors back in September, the furniture supplier was busy invigorating and re-engineering. Oakham and Wansford, two standfasts in their oak ranges, were each re-engineered in two different finishes, giving four new collections in CO, LO, CW & LW, allowing them even more time on retailers’ displays. These additions have been particularly popular because by cleverly re-engineering and no changes to structure or size, the supplier successfully managed to improve value, ensuring continued interest from retailers and consumers. Quite the achievement that while others in the industry have been becoming increasingly worried about the rising cost of materials, these entrepreneurs have been steaming ahead with huge market value, solidifying themselves as a brand to stay no matter the weather. This month, we wanted to know how their January Furniture Show went and which luxurious items retailers can expect to hit the floors. Trends, trends and more trends, we’re told. With the curtain coming down on 2017 and 2018 opening its account at the JFS, were Kettle Interiors simmering along or reaching the sought after boiling point? Very much the latter, it transpires. With the launch of two new bedroom ranges, 29 new chair styles and a collection of bevelled glasses mirrors, the supplier experienced an extremely busy four days at the show. Simon Ainge, sales director, explains: “We’ve long been

famed for bringing out the very latest in on-trends at the show and this year was no different with the launch of NT Bedroom and the FR Collection, but we also decided to branch out a little this year with some complementing ranges that see us diversify from traditional cabinet furniture.” He’s talking about the brand-new mirror collection that he hoped would give Kettle’s existing customers the opportunity to capitalise on the lucrative accessory sale, with four styles that come individually boxed for added ease. “The designs, from baroque to Edwardian, typify popular gilt styles in the sector and come in a range of rectangular sizes ready for any home,” he says. “In aged-effect silver and gold, two of these also in a fresh and modern white, this quality range makes the perfect addition to any of our furniture collections, so it seemed a natural move to make.” The pure variety in upholstered chairs at the Kettle stand was something to marvel at. It’s a fresh move for the company, but in keeping with the desire to provide a maximised choice for consumers. The company boasts a hearty slice of variety with pieces for all occasions, and, noticing a shift towards more luxurious upholstered styles, Kettle’s 2018 is centred on unveiling more choice in chairs and therefore opportunity to pick the perfect fit for every table. “With six items in different choices of fabrics, from plain to a gorgeous duck egg blue stripe and a heritage-inspired check,

looks range from button back to scroll and even office chairs and stools,” Simon adds. One of the most noticeable additions to Kettle’s JFS display was the recently adapted NT Collection, complete with a suite of bedroom pieces in the collection’s distinctive ‘Scandi’ style. It was a foregone conclusion to introduce NT Bedroom as the sales poured in. The new FR Collection, however, is evident of a more adventurous move, following the need for a trendfocused style. With the arena full of exciting trends for 2018, it’s certainly sensible to strike while the, er, Kettle’s hot. “We’re pretty confident that romantic painted bedroom furniture has now found a new direction with softer washed finishes on the up,” Simon explains. “We’ve also seen a move towards more luxurious country styles and

so we designed the FR collection, a perfect blend of grey-washed oak and French provincial country style. The result is akin to furniture you might expect to find in a grand French chateau but proportioned for today’s homes and with all the modern details, including metal runners.” The suppliers are clearly excited about the new introduction, especially after the positive feedback they received at the JFS, and Simon admits it “proves they’re on to a good thing”. With a constantly surrounded stand at the JFS, it sounds a lot like the ideal start to 2018 for Kettle Interiors, and another elegant taste of success that they’ll hope to take into the coming months and through summer. Rest assured that we’ll be keeping you up to date on what’s hot…

COMMUNICATION

Hyder Living makes its editorial debut

i n C a b i n e t M a k e r, a s directors Biny and Zed Hyder aim to

“make your home a Hyder home”

Hyder Living, Huddersfield based bed and mattress specialists, already boast a range of upholstered, wood and metal framed beds, with a somewhat comprehensive range of children’s beds to boot. So what’s next? Well the company has been keeping a close eye on the direction the market is going in and has invested accordingly, making the decision to branch out from importing beds and manufacturing mattresses to launch a sofa brand after much demand from clients. The launch came at 2018’s January Furniture Show, following a 2017 in which the company downsized its operation with a view of building a more intimate working relationship with its clients. And has it worked? Well, it certainly seems that way. JFS proved to be one of Hyder Living’s most successful outings yet. The response was “immediate and overwhelming”. The business has never been one for resting on laurels and has aimed for improved product choice for customers far and wide, increasing their already firm presence in the bespoke furniture industry.

50 | 23rd February 2018

Director Biny Hyder explains: “Our clients have often asked us to source sofas, and thereby offer a one-stop solution and this fuelled our interest to diversify. The sofa launch for Hyder Living was part of the natural progression of where we felt our business needed to go. We’re enabling our brand to be a single point of contact when considering the two primary rooms, which require great comfort and value.” So what did the company take away from the four days at the JFS show? (Apart from a slight urge for a rather large glass of Claret that is.) “Due to the inclement weather and poor positioning we didn’t get the footfall that was expected, however, the quality of attendance was far superior to that of the last few years. I have no quarrels. This conversion shows the strength and quality of the products, which is why I feel so good about the show.” So it’s safe to say that Hyder will be seeking a spot at the 2019 edition of the JFS. Particularly seeing as the main challenge Biny sees facing the company at present is centred around holding the pace. “Once you set a

“WE ARE POISED PERFECTLY TO DELIVER A SOLUTION THAT SITS BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY.” benchmark as high as we did in JFS2018 we have to maintain this. We have to keep the energy at the same level and continue to exceed expectations.” Unsurprisingly, entering the new arena of sofa-manufacturing has meant branching out physically too. Substantial time and investment put into the new products have been the catalyst for new site plans and the company is considering taking on its own production facility. Zed Hyder, founder and managing director, continues: “Sofas tend to set the trend of which bed frames then follow, so it offers the perfect synergy. The range is primarily bespoke. We are offering a variety of fabrics and the final design, the customer will ultimately decide. We are poised perfectly to deliver a solution that sits between traditional and contemporary.” All signs are pointing to a growing market trend for traditional but contemporary blends in furniture and homeware and this is what Zed is setting out to bring to the company’s products, with the principle goal of becoming a designer brand. “We will continue to make our products more contemporary, retro, stylish and introducing more elements of design,” he adds. Having cast our eyes on recent design trend events, we’re keen to see yellows, greens and blues among the collections. As for Zed’s beliefs concerning 2018 trend focuses, his predictions are simple but astute: “Pastel and nude colours, along with an Oxford Blue, but then again who knows? I’ll look out for women’s fashion to decide.” Where the customers demand, the

customers will receive. The managing director attributes growth in large part to good communication with the people on the other end of the transaction. “We like to offer a personalised service and truly look beyond just selling a product. Communication is key, and we believe in operating in traditional ways while still being at the forefront of innovation and technology.”

Rimini

While technology has enabled consumers to reach companies faster and provided savvier retail success, businesses have also enjoyed the benefits of technology, especially when it enables more sustainable manufacturing methods. Hyder Living is proudly recycling 100%, meaning 0% goes to landfill. It’s also an ‘eco-friendly’ business, signed up to the go-green initiative with the sofa range also abiding by the same eco-friendly rules as the mattresses. Biny knows it’s become ever important in the decision-making process for consumers and therefore manufacturers alike: “Sustainability is a key concern at Hyder, wherever we can avoid use of non-sustainable product we endeavour to do this. Trying to find substitutes for long established products such as rubber and wood have been difficult, it is always playing in the mind whether we want to sacrifice this to achieve a price point or out-price the product in the market.” It’s the top of the list of achievements, with years having gone into the development of the Natural Collection, using locally sourced materials and complete transparency with clients. It’s now a point of pride within the business. “It’s an absolute achievement. We could not have hoped for a finer finished product after the time and effort resulted in the product we always wanted.” The company feels it’s moving into the industry’s favourite names for furniture as an entirety, listening to its clients and broadening its presence within the home, particularly with high-quality handcrafted products. Zed says that the company motto was previously “make your home a Hyder Home”, but it only really ever applied to the bedroom. “This move is truly taking a step further. Over the past 25 years we have forged an enviable reputation and

Calgary presence within the bedroom sector and after making inroads into the hospitality arena, it was felt that our company wanted to be holistic in its offering. We have always based ourselves on great quality and value for money.” The company mantra of “efficiency and effectiveness”, the new Natural Collection and bespoke sofas and the ability to produce 2,500 pieces every week all make for a happy Hyder experience in the home so far. So where are they Hyd-ing over the coming year? You’ll find the Yorkshire outfit exhibiting again in the UK. Hyder will be at Hotellympia to look after the contract side of the business, and now that they are an NBF member they will be easily spotted at the Telford Bed Show on 18-19 September, following up from JFS with a soft launch. Pulling out all the stops this year, they’re also considering a Sleep Design event for November 2018. And if you can’t get to either event, you can make it count at their fully refurbished, redesigned and brandnew showroom.

ROARING Cabinet Maker

catches up with the winners recognised

in the Heico

Design Awards at the January

Fu r n i t u re S h ow.

The BFM Joan Milton Award was won by Emily Bouzane des Mazery for her heart design

52 | 23rd February 2018

Every year at the January Furniture Show there is a certain distinctive buzz of

anticipation in the air, a quiet appreciation of empathic talent hungry for recognition. This year’s show was no different. In 2017 Heico Fasteners UK Ltd teamed up with British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) in the long-standing Upholstery Design Competition. The ninth outing for the Heico Design Awards delivered design prowess and aptly paid tribute to Joan Milton, chair of the competition judging panel for several years. Joan, who was also a former president and director of the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF), sadly passed away last year.

Stuart Elmy, Heico Fasteners marketing manager, said: “Having made such a valued contribution towards the success of the competition over the years, we and our colleagues at the BFM thought it fitting to remember her achievements by naming this part of the competition after her. It was particularly fitting that one of the runners up in the main competition was one of Joan’s students.” The Heico Design Awards are aimed at recognising the talents of furniture designers each year, challenging upholstery students to create a scaled down chair, flexing their creative muscles to conjure something new with the range of decorative upholstery nails and buttons on

The competition’s 9th consecutive year honoured former teacher and panel chair Joan Milton Heico’s shelves. The designs entered this year were noted for their superb creativity and hugely impressed the panel of judges. Inspiration, as anyone will testify, can hit anywhere and from anything. Multiple sources for one design can blow the mind in several directions and return it to one flowing idea. And it seems that’s just what happened this year. So, without further ado, let’s meet the well-deserved winners!

and entwined down the other leg becoming Rapunzel’s hair let down from the tower. “All the staff at The Upholstery Skills Centre were incredibly supportive which allowed me to feel that anything was possible,” she concluded.

Taking the centre pedestal at this year’s Heico Design Award was Tilly Stokes, student at Upholstery Skills Centre, with a story-telling chair perfect for creative minds to read upon. She said:

Two runners up prizes were scooped by Rachel Axnix and Sue Blow, of JA Milton Upholstery and Wendy Shorter Interiors respectively. Rachel, one of Joan’s former students, says Joan encouraged her to enter the competition: “I was in the last cohort to be taught by Joan and I received a distinction. She was a great teacher, full of hints and tips.

“From the moment I heard about the Heico competition I was really excited to enter. I love to be creative and it’s a wonderful opportunity to let your imagination run wild. Working in theatre inspires my love of storytelling and creating a world where anything is possible.

“When I got through to the final stage of the competition, she emailed me to wish me luck, but passed away soon after. I was determined to do her proud. I dedicated the chair to her by embroidering her name in tiny letters on the back. I know that she would have been pleased that I was a runner up.”

“Children have the most incredible, limitless imaginations, I wanted to make a place they could simply sit and read their books but also a playground to inspire them to make their own stories. The straw from the little pigs’ house wound up the back chair leg where it then passed through the spinning wheel becoming the gold thread that’s spun in Rumpelstiltskin. It was then plaited

Sue Blow, also a Runner Up for the main prize, was “delighted” when she heard her dragon chair design had been accepted onto the short list for judging. “For the finished piece to be awarded joint second place is amazing. The chair took a long time to do and is very detailed, so I feel that I have been recognised for all the surface decoration. The Heico Crystal Buttons were inspirational.

“CHILDREN HAVE THE MOST INCREDIBLE, LIMITLESS IMAGINATIONS, I WANTED TO MAKE A PLACE THEY COULD SIMPLY SIT AND READ THEIR BOOKS BUT ALSO A PLAYGROUND TO INSPIRE THEM TO MAKE THEIR OWN STORIES. ” “All my small chairs are designed with play in mind. I specialise in chairs for children, and each chair has a hidden secret: a flap that opens revealing treasures or soft toys. The dragon chair was inspired by the ‘Temeraire’ series of novels by Naomi Novik, together with the watercolours of Jackie Morris. And what child doesn’t love a dragon? The ‘hidden secret’ of this chair is the back panel that reveals a rather sleepy dragon protecting a hoard of gems, together with a couple of small soft toys that can be hidden away in small separate pockets. “I am hugely honoured to receive this award and it has given me the confidence to pursue my designs for more playful chairs.” Emily Bouzane des Mazery, winner of the BFM Joan Milton Award, was elated to receive recognition: “I got into upholstery because I liked restoration and when I 23rd February 2018 | 53

started the course I never thought I would be designing my own furniture. I was shocked, but over the moon when my mood board was picked. When I heard the amazing news that my chair had been chosen as the winner for the BFM award, I was so happy and was not expecting to win. I had a great day out at the JFS and was able to see the other winning designs, which were outstanding. “While browsing for the inspiration, I found a range of decorative nails, which included the ‘Ace of Hearts’ playing card. This then gave me an idea to centre the design on the nail. Originally, I was contemplating making an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ themed chair, although decided to scale the design back to the card theme.” It’s fair to say the judges were ‘suitably’ impressed by her creative imagination. Stuart lauded the high standard of entries in the competition: “All the students that entered can be rightly proud of the fine designs they produced, and I congratulate the winners on their well-deserved awards.

54 | 23rd February 2018

“This year’s competition was yet another great success and it really is a pleasure to see the excellent workmanship and creativity that the students bring to their designs,” he concluded. Having nailed another year in successfully creating scaled down designs with a big message to relay, the Heico Fasteners team is looking forward with anticipation to the joys next year’s will bring. And as for the future of the furniture industry, it’s looking certain that upholstery schools strewn around the UK will continue to provide the much clamoured for design finesse that ensures a healthy interest from retailers and manufacturers alike.
