Memorial stone honour for war hero... at last THE family of Mansfield Woodhouse soldier Driver Albert Henry Ward were joined by Mansfield mayor Kate Allsop and former Servicemen when a memorial stone commemorating his military service was unveiled at a special ceremony at the Mansfield’s Heroes Memorial at Carr Bank Park, Mansfield.

Driver Ward’s story and his family’s long journey to get recognition for the soldier were featured in last month’s NewsJournal. He died from tuberculosis contracted while serving his country during the second world war. Driver Ward who lived on Leeming Lane North, Mansfield Woodhouse, joined the Army for three years in 1929 at the age of 18, then when war broke out ten years later he signed up again. He was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force, transferred to RASC and later rescued from Dunkirk. He saw active service in North Africa, where he was wounded and hospitalised in May 1943. He was sent to Italy three times, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Greece and Austria. In May 1945, Driver Ward was diagnosed with tuberculosis and in September 1946 discharged as permanently unfit for any form of military service, with 100% pulmonary tuberculosis.

He died in 1948 in Ransom Wood Sanitorium, just outside Mansfield. As Albert died after the war, his name did not appear on any roll of honour for military personnel, even though his cause of death was directly attributable to his service and active duty in the conflict. Albert’s granddaughter, Karen Dowsing, of Mansfield, who had been trying for many years to get recognition for her grandfather, approached Mansfield’s Heroes Memorial Fund to see if his name could be added to the 10 other Servicemen from the district already commemorated at the memorial. That led to the service at Carr Bank

She said: “I’m so proud of him and I find this all really touching. “It has taken me so long to get him commemorated and it has been a long road, but now everything that is being done for him makes it all worthwhile.” A spokesman for the heroes memorial fund said: “Mansfield’s Heroes Memorial exists to pay tribute to those from Mansfield and District who have paid the ultimate price because of their military service.”

Thousands line streets as town hosts big race ONE of the most high-profile events to be hosted by Mansfield saw thousands of people turned out to watch the OVO Energy Tour of Britain 2017 cycling race.

Local people and cycling fans from around Britain lined the streets as the town hosted the start of Stage Four of the prestigious round-Britain cycling event. Some of the world’s top cycling superstars set off from the Market Place and raced through the town, into Ashfield and around Nottinghamshire. It was the first time the county hosted a complete stage of the biggest free-to-attend sporting event in the UK. In Mansfield Market Place spectators were able to talk to their sporting heroes, who chatted with the crowds and signed autographs. Former Top Gear driver The Stig was on stage along with the cycling teams. It is estimated the event, which included an all-day welcome party in the Market Place the previous day, could have boosted the local economy in the county by as much as £4m. It is also hoped the event will leave a lasting legacy in encouraging more people to get on their bikes and get active. Deputy mayor of Mansfield Coun Mick Barton said: “It was a fantastic event. “The smooth organisation by the council and all its partners reflected well on the district. “It was great to see so many people coming to see the race and enjoying everything that Mansfield has to offer. “The event was a fantastic boost for Mansfield and the local economy as well as putting the town on the map. “The Tour of Britain organisers were particularly impressed with the running of the event here and the great atmosphere it generated in the town centre. “Let’s hope we can welcome them back in the future.” The 113-mile route through the county took in more than 45 towns and villages as well as landmarks including Clumber Park and Newstead Abbey, before finishing at Sconce and Devon Park, Newark. Leading the way before the official start in the Market Place were youngsters from schools in Mansfield — Sutton Road Primary, St Philip Neri with St Bede Catholic Primary and Forest Town Primary. The pupils pedalled with a police escort along Leeming Street to Chesterfield Road South, where they stopped to watch the race. The children, aged seven to 10, were chosen by their schools, which were

CYCLISTS make their way up Leeming Street in Mansfield. participants in the national School Games Initiative and have also signed up to Mansfield School Sports Partnership, which both aim to help children be more active and healthy. The director of economic growth at Mansfield District Council, Mike Robinson, a keen cyclist himself, who was instrumental in helping to bring the event to the district, said: “It was a great coup for the town and what was interesting was that unusually for the Tour of Britain, organisers decided to start this stage within the confined space of a town centre. “That helped to elevate the atmosphere and create a real buzz and a continental feel. “Hopefully the Tour of Britain will look favourably on bringing the event back here in the future.”

Shops and businesses in the district got involved in the event by taking part in a best-dressed business competition. Among those who took part were Lloyds Bank, Charmingly Yours Boutique, Mansfield Museum, Corner House Care Home and Sally Twinkles, Mansfield; and Laminate Master, in Mansfield Woodhouse, The winner which achieved the most likes on the council’s Facebook page was Corner House Care Home. It gave its prize — two VIP tickets to the Tour of Britain village in the Market Place — to one of its users, Warren, and his support worker, Dan. Other companies sponsored the event and the decorations around the town, taking stands at the stage start and Big Welcome Party where the Action Sports Tour team entertained crowds with a breath-taking display of cycling skills and extreme sports.

European games high note for choir MANSFIELD’S world famous Cantamus Girls’ Choir added to its numerous awards with medal success at the European Choir Games. Cantamus not only brought home three golds and a silver in the Youth Choir, Sacred Songs, Unaccompanied Songs and Jazz and Music Theatre classes, but the girls were among six international choirs

invited to sing at the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival in Riga, Latvia. The 38 girls also appeared on television as hundreds of groups came together for the competition, which featured mixed choirs of many ages. Well-known composer and conductor John Rutter told Cantamus director Ann Irons that he knew of the choir’s fine reputation and was pleased to see their high standard was continuing.

The artistic director of games organiser Interkultur invited Cantamus to its future events. The girls were congratulated by people when they walked through the streets or travelled on trams. On one occasion when they spontaneously burst into song, a tram passenger said he would not get off at his stop because he wanted to hear more.

Knitted poppies to support RBL MANSFIELD District Council’s Poppy Parade project is being backed by the Mayor of Mansfield, Kate Allsop, as more woollen poppies are donated by the community.

The project aims to create a display of knitted and crocheted poppies in Mansfield town centre to commemorate those who lost their lives during the war around Remembrance Day — and to raise money for the Royal British Legion (RBL). Each poppy can be sponsored by the public and attached to netting at events in Mansfield Market Place in October. The poppies will be on display along part of the parade route during the week leading up to the Remembrance Day parade on Sunday, 12th November. Mayor Allsop, who can crochet and knit, said: “This is a fantastic project that will really bring the community together. “When the display is up, people should come from all over to see it and enjoy what the town has to offer at the same time.” Sophia Snell, RBL community fundraising manager for the region, said: “We are thrilled that the community in Mansfield is coming together to raise much-needed funds for the Legion. The woollen poppies are stunning and we are grateful for the support given to us.” Knitting and crochet patterns are at www.mansfield.gov.uk/poppyparade. Poppies can be delivered to the Civic Centre, Chesterfield Road South, Mansfield, marked for the attention of the Marketing Communications team, until the end of September. Groups and individuals are urged to get in touch with the council to let organisers know about your involvement so progress can be promoted. Photos can be shared on the council’s Facebook page, which can be found at www.facebook.com/mymansfielduk, or can be sent to the Events team via events@ mansfield.gov.uk where you can also request more information.

Awards for medics after cave rescue FIVE medics who conducted a ninehour rescue to save the life of a climber injured in a cave have been honoured.

They waded for 40 minutes through waist-high water and climbed 800ft to reach the man, who had been struck in the head by falling rocks. Anna Challis and Craig Swinton, of Mansfield; Nicola Baxter, of Rainworth; and Worksop’s Jason Buckle, all from the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) at East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), worked with Jim Adler, from Derbyshire Cave Rescue. The HART team entered Speedwell Cavern, Castleton, by boat, and waded through the water, carrying medical kit above their heads. Then they had to organise an abseil, several crawls through confined spaces, and another half-mile wade through cold water to get the patient out of the cave. The specialist ambulance crews have been presented with Chief Commendations for providing an outstanding service to EMAS. Jim, a technician for EMAS, said: “When we reached the patient, he was huddled in a blizzard shelter and cold, frightened and in pain. “He was secured in a stretcher, given pain relief and then we had to go back the way he had come.” The patient was lowered 250ft down the cavern — and Jim went with him to monitor his condition. At the bottom the climber was put into a boat and then the teams waded through the freezing water to pull him out. Jim added: “It was a job well done, but it was the most challenging cave rescue we have ever done.” While Jim was with the patient, paramedics Jason and Anna made their way into the cave, and were later joined by Nicola and Craig. Craig said it took an hour to get from the surface to the patient before they could start helping him out of the cave.

ANNA Challis, Jim Adler and Jason Buckle with their awards. He said: “When we reached the patient, he was really cold as he had been down there for six hours and he didn’t know where he was. It was difficult to assess him. “We were able to give him some pain relief and began the journey out.” The patient was taken to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, for further treatment. Jason, who joined HART in 2014, explained it was his first real cave rescue. “It was a real challenge. We were wading through muddy brown water carrying the

kit above our heads, and we had to rely on our head-torches for light. It was hard work,” he said. “I was really surprised to hear we had been nominated for awards, but also pleased. It now has pride of place on the mantelpiece.” The HART team regularly trains for incidents like the cave rescue by using a ‘rat-run’ that simulates confined space working, such as cave rescues. Paramedics have to crawl through tight spaces in pitch black conditions while carrying medical kit.

Gearing up to help swimmer’s career

RECORD-BREAKING Clipstone junior swimmer Elliot Clogg will enjoy a year of sponsored motoring from Ron Brooks Toyota Mansfield.

The company has supplied Elliot with free use of a new Toyota AYGO x-press, which will help him make the twice-daily 60-mile round-trip to the National Training Centre in Loughborough as part of an intense training regime. The demanding training programme involves 4.30am starts, from Monday to Friday, for 48 weeks of the year. Elliot fits that around college work, organising meal plans and nutrition. Elliot holds the British junior records for the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke in a 25-metre pool as well as the English junior record for the 100m freestyle. His dream is to swim at international level and he is targeting making the national squad for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo — of which Toyota Motor Corporation is a global sponsor. The AYGO x-press has been liveried with gold decals, in keeping with the athletics tradition of “going for gold”. Mike Lane, centre principal at Ron Brooks Mansfield, said “It is with great delight that we are able to extend this offer of vehicle sponsorship to Elliot. “Here at Ron Brooks we are dedicated to

developing new and exceptional talent and we believe that Elliot has what it takes to make a huge impact in his sport.” Elliot said: “I can’t express how much it means to be supported in this way. I am so

grateful for what Ron Brooks has done for me. A massive thank you.” l PICTURED is Mike Lane handing the keys to the AYGO x-press to Elliot Clogg.

Set to smash fundraising target IN just six months, The Mansfield Building Society has almost reached its two-year fundraising target for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Staff at the society named Macmillan as its charity partner in December with a commitment to raise at least £5,000 for the cause by December 2018. Fundraising is already well on track, however, after staff completed many events to raise £4,117 in the first six months. In March, they completed a 40-hour bikeathon in the Mansfield branch, cycling during opening hours. During May, a team of 15, including family and friends, climbed Mount Snowdon in Wales. In June, four members of staff hiked from the society’s branch in Chesterfield to its branches in Sutton and Kirkby, before finishing at its Mansfield head office. All funds raised for Macmillan by The Mansfield will be used to support the

charity’s local activity in Mansfield, Ashfield and Chesterfield. Meg Fisher, customer service manager, who was part of the team that tackled the six-hour hike to reach the peak of Mount Snowdon in torrential rain, said: “Macmillan is a charity that means so much to so many.”

Stacey Smalley, Macmillan fundraising manager for Nottinghamshire, said: “I am amazed at the amount of enthusiasm everyone at The Mansfield has for raising money for Macmillan. This will make a huge difference through our information centres, helpline and Macmillan professionals working in the community.”

News Cheesecake business started on the beach

AN entrepreneurial Mansfield Woodhouse businessman launched two catering businesses from his home this year — and they have both become a hit thanks to the power of social media and the quality of his food.

Alrate Cheesecakes and Caveman’s Kitchen were dreamed up by Paul Haywood, who already ran Forever Young Fancy Dress in Mansfield. Paul set up Forever Young after working in Cyprus for three summer seasons, when he decided he wanted to work for himself. Earlier this year he was on a beach in Cambodia, thinking of how he could boost his income, when he thought of Alrate Cheesecakes. “I was laid on the beach playing on my phone,” he said. “I follow a few cheesecake pages and it looked like they were successful. I suddenly thought, when I get home I am going to do it myself. “I started in February doing a few cheesecakes and putting them on a social media page. “I didn’t say it was me as I wanted honest feedback, I said they were made by an old lady on the street and that I wanted people’s opinions. “The nine cheesecakes went and everyone loved them. In the second week I got 90 orders and it has gone from there.” The large cheesecakes — which are also sold by the slice — are famous for their exotic, sweet-toothed toppings. Paul has catered for weddings, christenings, baby showers and just people who fancy a cake for tea.

His cooking background stems from his father, who was a chef. “I love it,” said Paul. “If I have a bad day at work I come home and cook. It’s a passion that is in me and I know I am good at it.” His businesses have a five-star food and hygiene rating from Mansfield District Council. Caveman’s Kitchen was launched after Paul appeared on Gordon Ramsey’s TV cookery programme, Culinary Genuis. He did not make the final, but Ramsey labelled him a caveman because he used his hands so much — and the idea was born to name Paul’s next venture for home-cooked household favourites after the nickname.

The takeaway business offers hot food such as lasagnes, Sunday lunches, roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce cobs, and roast potatoes. Paul believes in giving something back to the community and, for example, has raised money for the £500,000 Dollar For Dawson campaign, to send one-year-old Sutton boy Dawson Willcock to the US for pioneering cancer treatment. Paul donated the profits from a week of selling cheesecakes to the appeal. He is also raising money for children in Cambodia to receive schooling by holding twice monthly dinner parties for people he has not met before. At the end of the evening they pay what they think the meal was worth with the money going towards Paul’s fundraising. Paul, born and bred in Mansfield Woodhouse, said: “Woodhouse is an amazing community. The support you get is second to none. “I have travelled the world, such as to Cambodia, Cyprus and Thailand, and lived in Australia for eight months, but I have come back to where I started. If I had started a business in Australia, would I have got the same support? No... and it would not have been as successful.” For more information on Paul’s businesses go to: Alrate Cheesecake en-gb.facebook.com/ alratecheesecakes/ Forever Young www. foreveryoungfancydress.co.uk/ Caveman Kitchen m.facebook.com/ cavemanskitchenwoodhouse/

Favourite photographs at Mansfield Museum MANSFIELD Museum is continuing to bring NewsJournal readers a selection of the favourite photographs from its collections.

Many of these are available at the ourmansfieldandarea website, which gives the public the opportunity to share their information, memories, photos and knowledge about Mansfield and the local communities, both as they are today and how they were in the past. If you are interested in visiting the site, type www.ourmansfieldandarea.org. uk into the address line on your internet browser. This month’s choice is some of the museum’s favourite images as they show the Market Place when it was open to traffic. An interesting display relating to the councils cleansing department has obviously attracted plenty of attention. One of the museum’s contributors said it was Tuesday, 16th July 1974, and was held in conjunction with the Keep Mansfield Tidy campaign. Three hundred schoolchildren and other visitors were shown demonstrations of how some of the new vehicles could compact furniture and mattresses.

3D magic on way for Palace pantomime MAGICAL 3D effects have been promised at this winter’s panto at Mansfield Palace Theatre.

Further cast members for Jack And The Beanstalk have also been revealed. Andrew Tucker, cultural services manager, said: “A major part of the magic of pantomime is to be found in the special effects. “This is the first time our audiences will be wowed by 3D and we can’t wait to experience the excited reaction of our crowds.” Rebecca Wheatley, perhaps best known as receptionist Amy Howard from TV’s Casualty, will play the Vegetable Fairy. Rebecca, who scored top 10 singles with Everlasting Love and Stay With Me Baby in 1998 and 2000 respectively and is also a presenter on Loose Women and The Wright Stuff, said: “Acting, singing, presenting... it’s all telling stories. “I love to tell stories. Panto is absolutely the one thing that you have to do every Christmas. It’s tradition. “There will be lots of surprises and the show will have heart, fun and games — I think we all need a bit of that.” The panto dame, Dame Trott, will be played by Craig Ansell, who is known for taking traditional characters and providing his own unique spin. He said: “Poisoned apples, rusty old lamps, ticking crocodiles and gargantuan beanstalks do not compare to two shows a day in heels… and Cinderella thought she had issues!” Rebecca and Craig join previously announced stars Mark Little and Adam Moss in the cast for the show. Comedian Adam is returning to Mansfield for a third time due to overwhelming customer demand, this time taking on the role of Silly Billy. He promised: “More madness and Mossy mayhem! I am really thrilled to be coming back to such a lovely place as Mansfield Palace Theatre to spend time with the incredible audiences and staff there.”

REBECCA Wheatley and Craig Ansell have joined the cast for Jack And The Beanstalk at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield, which already included Mark Little (right). Mark – who is most well-known for his role as Joe Mangel in Neighbours – will be playing the character audiences will love to hate, Fleshcreep. “I like playing the baddy, but will be more nutty than scary,” he said. “I want the kids to have banter with me without being terrified.” The pantomime opens on Saturday, 2nd December and runs until Sunday, 7th January, with relaxed and signed performances available on certain dates. Go to www.mansfieldpalace.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01623 633133 to book tickets.
