Editor’s Note Coming straight out to bat I am going to begin by shouting out “Good day fellow Islanders!” – both permanent and temporary – for I do hope we here at BiG find everyone in good health and spirits. You have to excuse me but my joviality comes from being happy that Sabah and Sarawak along with ourselves here in Brunei have managed to ride out the worst that the Omicron wave swept our way this past quarter. Mask up, good hygiene, respectable distance, and resume your plans everyone. Life does not stop, it continues, and us all along with it. Tangible proof of this are the numerous business pursuits that have been popping up across the Sultanate recently. Virtual dance classes for children. Creative entrepreneurs crafting quality clothing, headwear, beaded accessories, and stunning resin products. Businesses specialising in beverages, deserts, and an Instagram-worthy space to socialise in small groups. The mixture of people, food and beverage, and entertainment – whether based at a private residence or a public venue – are braving the current economic climate to pursue their passions. With so many openings during the past 3 months I had to flip a coin to determine who would make it to this issue and who to shelve for the next. During this time Brunei Tourism promoted several areas of interest within each of the country’s 4 districts. These destination packages are encouragement for us all to explore our backyard in more depth and detail. With the 2nd and 3rd term school holidays upcoming in August and December, consider a brief family road trip to Eco Sumbiling, Freme Rainforest Lodge, or The Abode. Personally in my case, life continued by the order of my stomach whose craving for tasty goodness stuffed between 2 pieces of bread led to a Sultanate-Sabah-Sarawak Sandwich Search (can you tell I love alliterations?). With more choice available to me than even I initially realised, I restricted my visits to just the few places that caught my attention. After flipping through this issue join us on Instagram and do let us know if you have a favourite spot for a good old sarnie. Just do us a favour. Kindly wait till 6pm before flooding our feed with pictures of your favourite sandwiches because, you know, Ramadhan commitments + sad stomachs = sensitive people. On that note however, I take this opportunity on behalf of the BiG Magazine Team to wish all Muslims in Borneo, in Southeast Asia, and the wider world beyond, a very happy festive season in May. Stay safe, exercise common sense, and enjoy the festivities as much as you can within reason. Selamat Hari Raya everyone. I hope you have a good one!

Jerudong International School Brunei Darussalam
Let your child study and be inspired by the unique tropical environment of Brunei! An ‘outstanding’ HMC co-educational thriving boarding and day school for 1680 students aged 2-18 years from 55 countries. Jerudong International School (JIS) has a long established history and close relationship with UK military families posted to the Brunei Garrison. Nestled close to the coast, JIS boasts well qualified academic staff in state-of-the-art facilities on its 120 acre campus. It is a leading school in Southeast Asia preparing students for I/GCSEs, A Levels and the IB Diploma. “The quality of boarding provision and the care the boarders receive at JIS is outstanding” PENTA International (UK Government Inspection) January 2019

Jerudong International School Brunei Darussalam
“I never expected the school to be like this!” This is the frequent reaction of parents being posted to Brunei who discover Jerudong International School (JIS). Brunei is something of an enigma - a small Sultanate of just over 435,000 people situated on the northern coast of Borneo. It would be understandable that many would not expect to find an ‘Outstanding’ British international HMC school of 1670 students here! The teachers, pupils and parents take great delight in welcoming new families and helping them to discover all that is on offer. The School is proud of its links to the UK and has had a longstanding relationship with the British Armed Forces due to the British Garrison located in Brunei and also the ‘Loan Service’ programme which exists between Brunei and the UK Armed Forces. “I recall arriving in Brunei in 2012 and coming to the school with my three children and thanking my lucky stars that I had been able to come to such an amazing place to work and educate my own children” says the Principal Nicholas Sheehan. Mr Sheehan started his time in JIS in the Geography Department and since 2020 has been Principal of the school. “As an educator and as a father, I am proud to lead this amazing school” he says, continuing “after all, where else in the world can children study on a campus which is located next to the sea and the rainforest? My children have had unique, formative experiences which will remain with them for their whole lives.”
CAMPUS Surrounded by rainforest, the school campus covers 120 acres, situated right on the South China Sea within walking distance of the Tungku beach and Bukit Shahbandar national forest. It is just ten minutes from the airport and ninety minutes from the Brunei Garrison in Seria. The state of the art facilities include a superb Performing Arts Centre with a 725 seater full size theatre, dance studio, drama classrooms and bespoke orchestra rehearsal rooms. Recent productions include The Wizard of Oz, the annual Music Gala and Alice in Wonderland. The sports facilities are extensive with 3 pitches for football
and rugby, three air conditioned sports halls for Basketball and Badminton, two swimming pools and a racquet sports centre for tennis and squash. The school places great value on community and has regular community sports events for football, netball and fun-runs. The classrooms are well resourced and include 27 science laboratories. The School’s 10,000m2 Outdoor Discovery Centre has been recognised internationally for the plethora of activities it offers as an outdoor classroom space. A bespoke Health Centre is on site with a small international team of nurses who care for the community.
CURRICULUM The school offers a British based curriculum from Nursery - Year 13. Time is spent investing in the children’s smooth transition into their first year of Senior School. “Inquiry based learning is important with children learning to take responsibility for their studies” says Mr Sheehan. Children in the Middle Years are offered a broad range of subjects - English, Maths, Sciences, Geography, History, Art, Design & Technology, Drama, Computing, Music, a choice of languages and PE. Year 9 acts as a foundation and preparation year for the IGCSE programme. Years 10 and 11 follow with the two year IGCSE programme building upon the Middle Years subjects and also introducing the opportunity to study new subjects too. In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13), students are able to choose between the A Level programme or the IB Diploma programme. A third pathway is being launched in August 2022 - a two year BTEC Diploma in Creative Media. Graduating students have consistently achieved exam results above the UK national average, paving the way for further studies in the UK, Australia, USA and Canada primarily. However, the school is not a hothouse for academic excellence and places as much emphasis upon a well balanced co-curricular programme as the academic.
BOARDING There are presently 220 senior school boarders living in the boarding community, a short walk away from the main teaching areas, but still within the safe and secure campus. A recent inspection report commended the school saying “The quality of boarding provision and the care that the boarders receive at JIS is outstanding. Students of all ages stated that the provision is excellent. They speak highly of the family atmosphere that permeates the boarding houses.” There are four boarding houses, two for boys and two for girls, with a communal dining hall and recreational facilities. Boarders are able to use the school facilities too. The Boarding Houses are all led by experienced Boarding Housemasters and Housemistresses who are also teachers within the school. They are supported by Deputies who are also teachers and a team of matrons, including nurses to care for the children after school. Both weekly and full boarding is available with the children of the Brunei Garrison usually opting for weekly boarding so they are able to return to their families at the weekends. “Fantastically amazed with JIS, we are a military family on our first ever posting… The whole network of JIS has been so helpful and reassuring… any concerns, however trivial, are answered. Teachers
“Jerudong International School is outstanding in all aspects. The quality of teaching is outstanding. Students make good progress as they move through the school. IGCSE and ‘A’ level results exceed UK national expectations, IB results exceed world expectations. Personal development is of a high order. Students feel secure and valued within the friendly mutually trustful learning environment that prevails throughout the school. Students are well supported by outstanding pastoral care and robust welfare, health and safety policies and procedures. The students, parents and staff are highly committed to the school and feel valued and appreciated. The curriculum is broad and balanced, enriched by a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Provision for boarding is outstanding. The school fulfils its vision of ‘achieving excellence’. “
“The value of such an undoubtedly good school is that for parents coming to Brunei, you can happily bring your children with you rather than having to seek alternative boarding choices. It also means that as parents you can share with your children in the community life of the school. Indeed, as one parent put it, JIS is a community at school, not somewhere you simply send your kids off to learn everything by rote.”
PENTA (UK INSPECTION) REPORT 2019

THE GOOD SCHOOLS GUIDE “The school nurtures responsible students and is highly successful in meeting their social and personal needs and embracing cultural diversity. They display a high level of self-awareness and self-confidence.”
and boarding staff are engaging and caring… we are thrilled that our children have been able to experience such a great school. I know they don’t want to leave already…!” JIS Parent with children in Boarding (February 2022) PASTORAL CARE The senior school delivers its’ pastoral care through the well established ‘House’ system. Modelled on traditional British boarding schools, there are sixteen Houses named after birds of Borneo. The four boarding Houses are complemented by twelve Houses for day students. Each House is about 65 students from Years 7-13. A strong sense of community and care is nurtured within the School. One example is the ‘Polio Points’ charity project linked to the student rewards system. Students evidencing one of the six school core values - effective communication, engagement in tasks, integration into the community, developing resilience, critical thinking and leadership are awarded a ‘Polio Point’. Upon achieving a set of six Polio Points - one for each school aim, the school will give a donation of $1 to UNICEF for one polio vaccine. Thus students are encouraged to do their best not just for self promotion but for the wider good. In 2021, the students were able to donate over 10,000 vaccines.
LEADERSHIP In addition to the House leadership opportunities, there are further leadership initiatives across the school. These range from year level councils to leadership in co-curricular activities such as sports, eco-JIS, the polio points council. The School has a well established Duke of Edinburgh International Award programme for students in Years 10-13 offering Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards and is one of the largest providers in Asia with a significant percentage of students participating. Younger students are able to join the outdoor education programme and also the school Scouts troop. Jerudong International School looks forward to welcoming your family and your children to join its thriving, caring community!

special Morchia (Brunei) Woo Wee these look fancy as heck! I was initially attracted to these facemasks because not only were the design, material and packaging formal and elegant in appearance but they remind me strongly of work ties. Hint-Hint, wear these 2 items as a combo with your work attire and I reckon many fellas out there will succeed in pulling off that suave look. A scrunchie specialist it was only a matter of time before the brain behind Morchia ventured into supplying facemasks made of cotton and linen that are both subtle yet sexy, elegant yet practical. Collaboration with the Asnika Gallery to make the Songket facemask is proof that quality attracts quality. •• IG: @ Morchia.bn
The Great Mask Off
...ERR ON!
Despite the numerous foot stamping, arm-flailing tantrums that took place worldwide over the past 700 days, the reality is a pesky virus has flipped life upside down. For the more enterprising and creative among our number, quickly coming to terms with the New Normal has allowed a niche segment of the market to be filled following an initial collapse of global supply chains. That is right everyone, I am referring to that simple piece of PPE we know as the facemask.
Nina Hasnani (Brunei) Buy a facemask? Pfftt. Why? I can make them myself. Relying on yourself is a useful trait to have when you have the know-how needed to back it up. Initially making cute little stickers when the pandemic broke out, this creative began making washable cotton facemasks to be worn either on their own or in tandem with a medical filter that can be inserted into an optionalupon-request inner face pocket. Huh, that’s clever, why didn’t I think of that. A fan of primarily muted floral designs, she did experiment with a limited edition inhale-exhale facemask gift box that sold out doubly quick. Fingers crossed she designs more exclusives in the future! •• IG: @shop.ninahasnani 8
Borneo.Insider’s.Guide
Taking into account the necessity of it, and how incredibly dull, ugly and sterile medical masks look, it was only a matter of time before a bunch of us went all stylo-milo (as my generation of Bruneians would say) and start customising this form of protection. If we are really required to wear these coverings on half of our face every time we step foot out the house, smiling or sticking our tongues out at people only to realise that they cannot see us doing it, having our sneezes reflected right back at us, the least we can do is make sure they are comfy and look good. On that note, here are just a few of the facemask creatives around Borneo that have caught my attention.
Mersaktiba (Brunei) Not everyone has this problem, but if you are like me and are always experiencing sore ears from the tightness caused by the loops and strings from your facemasks, then you need an extender. There are a few different ones out there but the ones knitted by the crochet aficionado known fondly by many by her moniker Mersaktiba have been the source of good reviews. Flexible, comfortable, insanely vibrant and colourful, these should be the first on your list to check out. (Flip to page 10 to learn more about this creative). •• IG: @mersaktiba FB: @Mersaktiba

Borneo Native (Sarawak) Sarawak represent! The Borneo Native collection is a fashion line that brings the pride of Borneo to the wider world by instilling the spirit of our island into what we wear no matter how large or small. So it comes as no surprise that they rushed to create a large array of masks for the public when supply lines went down. From simple masks, to visor, valve, and their signature ninja masks, I cannot get over the urban modern take on traditional designs that see them transformed into funky works of art that bring to my mind images of cool graffiti. Rugged indeed. •• IG: @borneonative FB: @borneonative Borneonative.com
Tati Sustainable Design (Sabah) Hailing from Sabah I love the approach taken by this social enterprise aimed at empowering local communities so that they can be self-sustainable through creative pursuits. The dual layered cotton facemasks and extenders from this group are mainly available as a part of their cotton batik series as well as their signature Pua Kumbu collection, which are traditionally hand woven and tie-dyed with motifs that are a more imaginative take on local designs. The exact design is never used twice, and what you get is a unique one of a kind. As a lifelong collector of many things I just love the idea of this level of exclusivity! •• IG: @tati.sustainabledesign FB: @Tati Sustainable Design
Kat Crafts (Brunei) Oh my these are so pretty, and I cannot help but agree with the creative mind behind this pursuit that the beauty of using batik print fabrics is that no two items are 100% the same. The mixture of hues that include vibrant plays of pink and purple, blue and red, as well as earthy tones of green and brown, result in a selection of rainbow displays that will have everyone staring. Here lies the problem – choices, choices! Here lies the solution – buy them all! Kat Crafts also makes beaded mask extenders using glacé finish cotton instead of elastic, making them stronger and longer lasting. Someone did her research. •• IG: @katcrafts.bn

The Chronicles of
Yarnia
If you are like me – and have been living under a rock – take note that there is a difference between knitting and crochet. The former is a craft that requires 2 needles, while the super friendly Tasha aka Mersaktiba, is the latter as she creates some pretty cool stuff with just a single hook. No exaggeration, I mean have you seen the little booties that she has made for kids? Adorable to the max. Armed with a passion for arts and crafts since her childhood, and then armed with a hook as she began exploring fiber arts in her teen years; beanies, hats and roll-up pencil cases were among her first creations. Even though supportive relatives bought her items this pursuit lasted roughly a year as she went through a phase of exploring other hobbies, until she rediscovered it in 2017. Muscle memory enabled her to pick it up just like riding a bike. The turning point for this self-reliant crochetier was the realisation that from earrings, bags, and clothing, to home décor and lifestyle items, she could make a lot of the things she wanted. As long as she has

the pattern in mind she can create anything from a hook and string. The possibilities are endless. A DIY person through and through, she often wonders “Why buy, when I can make it?” Walking a path full of the evolution of self, her beliefs in life are responsible for increasingly more complex creations and commissions, as well as the underlying foundations of her Made-in-Brunei brand and everything she stands for. Some projects take 10 minutes, some take 5 months. Creating something out of nothing and imbuing every piece with her own energy of expression is a magical process
that allows her to leave a mark in the world and on the lives of those she touches with her work. Even the origin story behind her brand name itself is a representation of growth, development, creativity and liberation – a sign of how committed she is to her principles. If you are going to do something, do it right, which is a perspective that we can fully get behind … that and those adorable booties for kids. •• IG: @mersaktiba

KEEP ON
RAWKIN!
It is a story that we are all familiar with. A hard working member of society goes through the daily grind. That 8-5 which for many among us, can be a thankless task that we pursue just to make ends meet. However, there are those among us who take their interests, pastimes, or hobbies further beyond in their free time, burning the midnight oil with a dedication that is admirable. In the process they create something that often unexpectedly transforms their reality. Azri is such a person. This rock and rolling fella has always been a fan of collecting bracelets, specifically high end beaded ones. He has travelled the region seeking out wristadorning accessories, which to him represents the individual in a unique way and is a medium for good memories. Leaving behind a corporate career so he can make customised bracelets full time led to the evolution of a self-made brand – Rawky. For those who are unaware, that brand is pretty cool. Am I being biased due to my personal love of beaded bangles? Yes, I am. Does it matter that I can admit that? No, it does not,
because this home-based startup has picked up a large fan base and following due to Azri’s commitment to his craft.
The first 3 and a half years his focus was beaded bangles, which was quickly followed by tasbeeh prayer beads when clients happy with his products made this request of him. He sources top quality stones from Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and China. Most are premade designs and can be ordered via his Instagram account. He also customises designs for those seeking something a little more unique. Before you know it, he was making enamel pins, hoodies, trucker caps, and phone grips. There are a fortunate few people out there who even have his limited edition face masks, which are cool too. A small scale operation, keep in mind his hoodies and caps often prove to be best sellers and because they are made in small batches they tend to sell out super quick. Don’t let that stop you though as he is friendly and down to earth. In his own words, “Keep on Rawkin”. •• IG: @rawkybeads

A cut above Every now and then I am blown away by the things that some Bruneians do in the name of creativity and keeping busy. Wood crafting has always been popular in the Sultanate but my jaw was left hanging wide open when I learnt of Majestiqore. The equivalent to icing on a cake these fellas instead have resin on boards, and for those with an even stronger sweet tooth, the equivalent are pure resin products that are lovely to behold. Better yet, the items being crafted have an actual relevant use in the modern world besides simply looking pretty and cool. Beginning their journey as computer enthusiasts with a knack for incredible customised builds and set ups led them to begin toying around with resin, and that my dear friends is what has caught my eye as you will no doubt see for yourself. What began as crazy vibrant computer keyboard wrist-rests, quickly evolved to artisan keycaps, serving trays, coasters, a hybrid headphone and mobile phone stand, cheeseboards, 12

and nameengraved phone holders. All of these items exist as either a hybrid of wood and resin, or in a pure resin form only. The hybrid versions often have wood carved engravings of text or imagery of which the earthy brown is contrasted by resin representing every shade of the rainbow and those unseen in between. Pure resin products on the other hand are captivating to the eye. Some are kaleidoscopic and opaque, while others are translucent with inlays of flowers, leaves and stems, resembling fossilised plants entombed in amber. This is just the beginning they tell me, as they have plans to make even larger items such as tables with resin infused customised designs inserted into the table top itself. Simply wow. Darn it, my jaw is hanging open again. •• IG: @majestiqore.bn

Nothing says how important you are than a gift that is painstakingly made from scratch by hand, or at least that is what I believe. The time and effort put into an item is a reflection of worth. Now having said that I love receiving fresh flowers as much as the next person, but for the more artsy-fartsy among us, consider this. The next time you are looking to mark a special occasion, or would like to decorate a space in your home, get in touch with the Flower Time girls whose paper craft skillset is impressive to say the least. Their floral offerings are diverse in design and colour, presented in different mediums such as within traditional bouquets and baskets, as well as having a more modern take in the form of picture frames, hair bands, or within a gift box. In addition, there is also the benefit of them not needing to be watered so if you have a black thumb like me you will not feel so bad for not being able to keep your plant alive. My numerous attempts at origami over the years have me looking at their social media feed in envy. Check out the massive red rose backdrop they did for a wedding ceremony. Essentially Borneo, drop by drop Numerous studies across the ages have shown that essential oils can, in their own small way, boost the quality of your health. Not to mention they make you smell pretty good too. They are either inhaled, ingested or applied to the skin but regardless of the method used for their application the scents garnered from sources in nature are known to possess mild positive effects when it comes to improving your mood. So I was pretty stoked when I learnt that a licenced scent designer and artisan perfumer, Dr Sylvia Lim, had crafted her own premium roll-on blend she named The Children of Borneo. Using Frankincense as its base, and Clary Sage as its main body, the collection is split into 4 separate vials – each using either bergamot, lemon, orange, or peppermint for their final ingredients. The blends which are named in local dialects as Linawa, Tavan, Navau, and Osundu, tell their own unique story and are a pleasure to have infused into your personal aroma as you go about daily life. Carrying the spirit of Bornean children, the scents are naturally joyful, spirited, full of creativity, and truly representative of this Island we call home. The founder of this Aromatherapy Centre & Perfumery – Phi Aroma – even hosts smell training sessions for patients recovering from viral illnesses, as well as perfume workshops. Timeless Appeal There is something about leather that just exudes sexiness. I reckon its aesthetic appeal lies in the fine blend of being elegant yet rugged, a quality the material possesses in ample amounts. The fact that plastic straws are still a thing, or the difficulty I have had tracking down the author of a quote that says it all. “It’s just 1 straw … said 8 billion people”. Acknowledging that everything adds up and that the tally is far from over, Kuching-based Glasstraw have followed suit like many others in raising awareness of the devastating effect of plastic pollution. A simple product to be sure, but when you are armed with a glass straw, which by the way this awesome team offers in multiple colours to suit your persona, then you are taking a step toward saving nature and all its bounty. Movement Vocabulary of
T
racing its performative steps back to Japan in the late 1950s, the mysterious theatrical art form known as Butoh, is a diverse array of activities focused on movement, techniques and motivations for dance. It is all about expressing how you feel through your environment, your thoughts and feelings all coming together as one overarching experience. It has a strong underlying element of rebellion. Not against institutions or people. But a rebellion against oneself that drives a spiritual enlightenment that often translates into graceful performances that can be quite beautiful.
Art is a universal language however, and a vocabulary of movement created by one cultural group can easily find a home in the heart of others. Take Malaysia’s Lee Swee Keong (pictured) for example. The artistic director of the Kuala Lumpur Butoh Festival (2008 – 2019) as well as Nyoba Kan Butoh theatrical dance company, Mr Lee has been immersed in this world for 30 years. Quite dark in its presentation, slow moving, with a lot of physical posturing of the body at lower angles, he was captivated during his first encounter with Butoh as he watched his future mentor, Lina Ang performing on stage.
Fast forward three decades and he has inadvertently turned it into something his own, his progression has led him to sway from contemporary dance to ballet, flowing into numerous old-school martial art styles revolving around gentle fluidity. Being rooted in Malaysia has allowed Mr Lee to mold this art form around Malaysian sensibilities arising from the meshing of many cultures. Embracing the concept of auras and internal energy, his performative creations are meditative and relaxing in nature while being shocking in its aesthetics. As global societies move ahead with life with the virus,
this niche area of artistic expression is also staging a comeback this year. A conference, workshop, and showcase is set to take place at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University College on June 7-8, as well as a performance at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre on June 13-14. This is made possible by the JapanKuala Lumpur Foundation, and the Soubi Sha butoh company funded in 2012, in cooperation with Nyoba Kan continues to strengthen the relationship between Japan and Malaysia in this field. •• IG: @Nyobakan @jf_kualalumpur FB: Butoh Soubi Sha

Is there any silver lining at all in such a crisis for how leaders can use this moment to build a more livable, healthier and sustainable world? There is. A perspective that revolves around “seeing an opportunity rather than a problem” are the characteristics we need to successfully move forwards toward a post-pandemic future. This is how we can
support the efforts of the Brunei government to proactively and collectively shape the future into one that we want. Like many others out there going through similar experiences these past few years, we have seen people come and go, as the business has its ups and downs. In this we thank our workforce, our partners, our supporters, and of course our dearest members to whom we dedicate ourselves
to helping. We also extend our gratitude to all the frontline workers as well as the medical and healthcare professionals who are the true heroes of the times we live in now. Congratulation all of you! For we are still here, paving our way along new undiscovered paths with a renewed outlook on ourselves and the world. Life is not merely about the scenarios we encounter, but how we respond to and how that shapes us for the better. This is the Year of the Tiger. Let everyone here our collective roar!

f there isn’t something out there, then you should do it. History has seen this sentiment benefit so many so often. In this instance these 11 words led Katya Virshiles – a dancer and actress in her youth – to become the founder of Ballroom Bees in 2020 after moving from London to Hong Kong alongside her husband in 2017. “I never started with the intention to create a business, I just wanted to find dance classes for my son”. Fast forward 5 years and this 35-year veteran of the global dance industry who has worked alongside the likes of Antonio Banderas, Richard Gere, and Jennifer Lopez, has turned her business into a global franchise. Launched in Brunei on February 12 and 13 under the local stewardship of Caley Lim, free Zoom classes were offered to members of the media, kids and their parents. Classical ballroom and Latin dance to chart-topping hits are broken down before the delivery of a proven curriculum takes place to boys and girls of all ages. Only the most qualified and engaging dance instructors are taken onboard with Katya overseeing their training to ensure a consistency of quality and experience. We are thrilled to welcome families in Brunei to discover physical and mental wellbeing via Ballroom Bees, according to its founder. Caley Lim also points out that “Families in Brunei are very much tuned into health, wellness, and activities that bring us together despite the pandemic. For the first time, families can access a programme that has been developed by world champions and broken down step-bystep for each age group. As opposed to suffering from brain freeze, the owner instead experienced a Eureka moment and in that instant realised he now had a unique yet approachable name for this latest Italian frozen desert space on the Brunei F&B scene. Courtesy of your not-so-friendly nationwide virus, Brunei went into a 2nd lockdown just 1 day after Wunder Gelato’s soft launch. 3 Heads are Better than 2
I
f 2 heads are better than 1, what happens when you put 3 together? Better yet, what happens if those 3 also happen to be siblings whose mind sets are well synchronised with one another as a result of growing up together. The answer is often an idea that when transformed to reality is a finely blended product or service that makes our society more interesting. Take for example the trifecta of personas that made use of an empty commercial unit upstairs from the Tuck Shop, in the Setia Kenangan II business zone 2 months ago. Accommodating around 25 people at full capacity, the Tablespace has the potential to become a new social gathering point. An instagrammable chill out spot with nice lounge-like vibes, the interior possesses multiple facets representing those behind the scene. A space that is imbued by elements of their individual passions in a mesh that works so well. The sister – who is a drama teacher – is responsible for the interior aesthetics holistically.
Soft pastel pink walls blend nicely with the earthy tones coming from the faux brick wall, brown flooring and tables, as well as the tall potted green plants interspersed around the premise. A set of couches, bean bags, as well as a suspended birds nest chair dial up the chill factor to an 11, while a focus wall of deep grey draws the eye to the space’s namesake. A musician brother with a passion for Jazz, The Blues, and Metal, has an interesting selection of vinyl records on display nearby his propped-up acoustic guitar, while his tunes play in the backdrop. The eyes of an avid board gamer brother currently enjoying the Betrayal at the House on the Hill game lights up when explaining its intricacies as well as that of the good selection of other games populating a cabinet. Is that the restroom back there? Heck no. That is the game room where a PS5 has been set-up for people to play games either cooperatively or against one another. Well, the rest rooms are back here too but this room – far more interesting I think you will agree. Also of interest
is the support this trio show local vendors, crafts and artists. By the entrance are hats, pouches, and tote bags made from batik by @yours. trulybn (see Instagram). Some of the light snacks are courtesy of home bakers and cooks. Of particular interest are the artworks adorning one of the walls, which visitors can place a bid on should a piece catch their attention. The artists in question can have their works up for a full month before the cycle begins anew with more pieces going up in their place. They claim to be introverted but if you engage them in conversation, the trio are as hospitable and friendly as can
be. There is always a space at the table here. •• Unit 4, 1st Flr, Block C, Setia Kenangan 2, Kiulap Open: 10am-9pm (Tues-Sun) 2pm-9pm (Fri) Tel: 673-8831888 673-8608558 IG: @tablespace.bn

But did you know that there are increasingly more interesting products and services made, offered, and hosted by Bruneians. Really, how much of this experiential buffet have you actually sampled? In conjunction with Brunei Tourism’s launch of domestic packages ahead of the April, August, and December school holidays, here are some points of interest they wish you to know about.

TEMBURONG:
GLAMPING FOR THE WIN
All of Brunei is a green jewel, but Temburong is our green diamond. It is here where the Sumbiling Eco Village was built 15 years ago, followed by the Freme Rainforest Lodge 7 years ago, and followed also by the district’s latest service provider
on the jungle scene – The Abode which opened to the public 5 months ago. Popular with couples tying the knot over the last half a year, this solar powered lodge has tremendous potential and has once again begun drawing a spotlight back to the district. Each of these locales is charming, unique in their own way, and loaded with personality. Each offer memorable experiences from adventure trails, treks and
canopy walks at national parks, sunrise and night walks, river cruises, tubing, and fishing, zip-lining, flying fox, star gazing, traditional dance and music, cooking sessions, and visits to small towns such as Bangar nearby that abound with even more local snacks, delicacies and handicrafts.

The Luagan Lalak Recreational Park on a clear day offers stunning reflective views of the sky and clouds on its surface. The mirror-like vista is a sight to behold as you cross wooden walkways ringed by wetlands and jungle
BRUNEI-MUARA In its position as the capital district, the nation’s centre has always had a larger variety of F&B offerings, in addition to cultural, heritage, and entertainment related venues of interest. More often than not, as the capital district and home of the Sultan and his family, it is the Royal Regalia Museum that is a must go-to locale for the numerous displays that showcase the chronology of his life as monarch, as well as the history of the country. Replicas of numerous items and artefacts are spread all throughout telling the story of this unique kingdom. The importance of the state religion makes a trip to the Islamic Calligraphy & Arts Studies Centre an equally worthwhile visit. As the centre continues to seek out local artisans to produce vibrant artworks, a lot can be gleaned from this locale.

in the distance. When night falls this place is equally lovely with constellations, the Lyrids Meteor shower, and even the Milky Way revealing itself. Handicrafts, dance performances, and snacks are also on hand for those looking for Human contact, close by at the Iban Mendaram Longhouse.
The Bintudong Greenspring Resort is a spacious camp site that is neat and trim, and is a lot more laid back than its counterparts. You can go kayaking or riding ATVs but for the most part it’s ideal for chilling out away from the hustle and bustle of hectic civilisation. The same can be said for the Eco Ponies Lodge, but here there is a strong emphasis on community and Human interaction, which has proven popular with many European backpackers. Lamin Warisan too! Where history, heritage, food and games are on offer from a family that can trace its roots back 500 years. The district is home to many Made-in-Brunei products. Cold pressed coconut oil that is great for the skin, highend exclusive fragrances such as perfumes and incense derived from oudh oil sourced from agarwood, light chocolates and sugared jellies. SEEK OUT YOUR HOST
Upon arrival, say: “Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri” - This references the celebration being the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Not to be confused with Selamat Hari Raya Aidiladha, which is a completely different holiday, the Festival of Sacrifice.
4
PACE YOURSELF
“Eid Mubarak” – This is Arabic for Blessed Celebration.
There are 2 types of hosts. Those that provide a light selection of snacks for you to share and enjoy with one another, and those who have an amazing spread of delicious food because let’s face it, most of our aunties want to make us fat. Regardless of which category your hosts fall under, it is a good rule of thumb to pace yourself throughout the day, enjoying small amounts everywhere you go especially if you have many homes to visit.
Upon departure, say: “Selamat Hari Raya, maaf zahir dan batin” – A rough translation for ‘Do forgive any wrongdoings I may have done spiritually or physically.’ While this may sound strange to say to someone you just met 60 minutes ago, it has a strong underlying essence of courtesy and respect to your hosts.
2
TAKE A SEAT
It is viewed by many as impolite to eat or drink while standing up so you might think yourself stuck in a bind if you arrive at a home and all the chairs are filled. With Covid restrictions in place this is unlikely, but just in case, it is perfectly normal to sit on the floor. It is encouraged actually. I target floor spots next to tables full of snacks where I personally tell people “jemput makan” (let us eat together), which is polite. Covid has changed all the rules though so do try to make use of cutlery when possible to promote good hygiene instead of using your hand.
Do’s & Don’ts
veryone looks forward to this time of E year wherein the first 3 days are reserved specifically for visiting family and close relatives.
As Hari Raya is technically a 30-day affair, do not feel offended if you are not invited to an open house until after those initial 3 days has passed. This is merely an underlying layer of etiquette not spoken aloud but often adhered to. While we are all a hospitable, understanding and forgiving bunch, it nevertheless does not hurt for those new to these celebrations to be aware of some basic do’s and don’ts that are in play.
3
AVOID CROSS GENDER CONTACT
Because of Covid and social distancing it is better to avoid physical contact altogether. A nice alternative men and women can always practice with one another is the Salam Mufti, a greeting where you place your right hand close to your heart. When in doubt, a smile and a wave is perfectly acceptable.
5
OUTFIT OF THE DAY

Spiritual Connection Points he holy month of Ramadhan is the spiritual T build-up observed by the pious, prior to kicking off the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities. This
is a time of reflection and abstinence. A time to engage in serious soul searching. How can we be better today than yesterday, and be better tomorrow than today? In an era as hectic as ours not everyone can make the time to visit a house of worship outside Friday prayers but during this month of all months, people go beyond to make the time. Here are just a few of the more popular mosques in Borneo that make up our spiritual connection points.
Kalimantan OH MY GREEN GOODNESS (BERAU REGENCY): Built in 2005 and sporting a green hue that gradually changes from the cyan of the sea to a rich deep jungle interior as day turns to night, the Masjid Baitul Hikmah (right) of East Kalimantan contributes to the province’s religious tourism. Sabah BLUE REGALITY (KOTA KINABALU): With a mirror image of its regal blue domes, whitewashed walls and slender minarets reflected in the waters of the surrounding lagoon of Likas Bay, the floating Masjid Bandaraya (below) in Sabah’s capital exudes a sense of calm and elegance. Boasting features reminiscent of the Nabawi Mosque in Medina, it can accommodate up to 12,000 congregants at any one time and is an exemplar of Islamic contemporary architecture. ENRICH THE MIND (KOTA KINABALU): A unique mosque that often draws the gaze and
the crowds, this location is actually part of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (left), having been built on its campus. Easily accessible via a shuttle bus to a shopping complex within short walking distance, this attractive structure is one of the capital city’s top 3 mosques that tourists often make time to check out.
TEST OF TIME (KOTA KINABALU):
A hallmark of religious unity in Sibu where the level of interfaith tolerance is at its highest in all of Sarawak, the Masjid An-Nur (below), which can host 5,000 congregants, was just 1 year ago awarded the top 5-star rating on a national level. This prestigious award is a recognition of the efforts by the mosque’s governing body to help those whose needs are not based on religion, but on Humanity. This is a mosque that always goes beyond the call of duty.
STRIKING IN PINK (KUCHING): Affectionately known by locals as Masjid Lama (Old Mosque, left), this house of worship which used to hold the status as the official state
mosque of Sarawak is actually a redo of the original. Initially a wooden structure built in 1852, it was replaced in 1968 by the current iteration. Pastel pink and best seen from the river, the gilded cupolas help make it one of the city’s most striking landmarks, especially at sunset.
MYSTICAL AMBIENCE (KUCHING): Floating on the Sarawak River the architectural jewel that is Masjid India (right) is reflected on the calm waters at dusk where the sunset accentuates its façade as a postcard perfect moment. Part of the initiative to develop the waterfront for locals and tourists, with a 1,600 congregant capacity, the design is based on a blend of Turkish and Middle-Eastern concepts. With its turquoise tiles, and multicoloured LED lights that create a mystical purple glow at night, the ambience is a one of peace.
At 44 years old it has been around for almost half a century. Capable of hosting up to 5,000 congregants at any one time, it also has a balcony that was tailor made specifically for women and can accommodate 500. Despite its age, the Sabah State Mosque’s (above) design is a surprising fusion of a contemporary approach with the prevailing Islamic architecture at the time. It has so far succeeded in weathering the test of time.

In both muted beiges and striking hues of violet and maroon, these outfits hum a quiet aura of inner strength. •• IG: @nhbynaritaharith
FLORALS FOR DAYS (2021): Datin Azila Caramella of Caramel Fashion Scarves revisited her love for the romantic gardens of Europe in a collaboration with Farah Khan in reminiscence of better times. Their lineup for modern modest women takes inspiration from languorous gardens such as La Mamounia, Katsura, Majorelle, Shalimar, Tuileries and Monet, and presenting them in bold prints. “Each print is a reflection of joy, the flora and fauna of landscaped gardens to which so many of us cannot wait to return.” •• IG: @farahkhanofficial @caramelfashionscarves
SHINING, SHIMMERING, SPLENDID (2021): Mimpi Kita partners up with Disney once again to bring a collection injected with Arabian vibes. Symbolising an abundance of much needed cheer and joy, it draws inspiration from the brave Princess Jasmine from the animated classic film, Aladdin. With a new take on signature prints, making use of vivid colours, playful silhouettes and floral paisley patterns, these outfits are a statement for hope and magic. •• IG: @mimpi_kita
SHE-RAYA (2021): With strong Peranakan vibes played in tandem with wellestablished life in lockdown practices that we are all too familiar with now, the She Raya collection takes advantage of exactly that. Comfortable and homey to the max as small groups of visiting family and friends chill out together. The laid back aesthetic with its subtle flashes of celebration is one we can all get behind. •• IG: @shals.kl

The Phat Belly
Rice, noodles, pasta, and bread. The main carb pillars of the food foundation for which all sorts of nommy goodness are created. So eeny-meeny-miny-mo, and with bread now on my mind, this quarter I embarked on a short sandwich search to figure out what places should always be considered when this craving strikes.
Noice
A veteran specialist of the gourmet sandwich game who views this offering as equal parts science and art, Noice is seriously underrated. Judging locales by their appearance leads to overlooking culinary gems such as this Kiulap based haven. Nowhere in the Sultanate will you find a
wider diversity of choice than right here. The Cubano is their top seller, but the Grilled Cheese Trifecta is their pride and joy. I however was keen to put the Prawn Cocktail Royale to the test and it did not disappoint. The prawns are fresh with a slight crunch. The home made mayonnaise infused
with tomato was creamy and tasty. Garnished with black sesame seeds, mentaiko, and herbs, the dish is inclusive of a side of mash and gravy. I look forward to trying the Tuna Melt when next I visit ... and Mary’s Lamb ... and the Mighty Meat Meatballs … okay I’ll stop now. •• D29, Bangunan Lim Eng Ming, Simpang 88, Kiulap Tel: 673-8266825 IG: @noice.bn FB: Noice
Nearby Supa Save in Mata-Mata is the Phat Belly and man did I make a good call with this one. A modern urban interior of grey is a welcome escape from the brutal sun. The place has a young, chill vibe, I feel comfy already. The menu is a tribute to the Cheese Gods, so enjoy a cheat day and forgive yourself for taking the lord’s name in vain when yelling “Oh Cheesus!” The most popular item on the menu is their signature Lamb Cheesesteak Sandwich. Available with a side of phat crunchy fries and a sweet chilli dip, it comes as either a 3.5 or 7-inch sub. The latter is sliced into half and perfectly toasted. Not too charred, not to soft. Just crunchy enough to complement the generous heap of diced lamb, mushrooms, and bell pepper, swimming around in a creamy caramelised onion marinade that shut me up, because here the food certainly speaks for itself. •• Unit A9, Grd Flr, Block A, Lot 11620, Jalan Gadong Tel: 673-2443854 673-8351700 IG: @thephatbelly.bn FB: The Phat Belly

Yis Nation Located in Kiulap, this place was launched by the 3rd generation of the muchloved Jing Chew family, whose establishment is the national communities’ go-to for yellow bread goodies. Integrating this fluffy soft yellow bun with more modern fare is a twist
that Yis Nation has pulled off, proving that the food force is strong in this family. You can have their selection with white bread or burger buns too if you wanted more choice, but if aint broken, don’t fix it. The yellow bun nom-nom I opted for was the Swiss Mushroom Chicken. I love how the two halves of the bun have furrows that run down the middle so you can
see the veggie-crammed, cheese slice-topped gooey sauce oozing its way across its channel. So appealing to the eye but my stomach got mad at me and hurried me along to take a massive bite. •• Unit 23, Block C, Spg 88, Kiulap Tel: 673-8266825 IG: @yisnation FB: Yi’s Nation
Switch Co Only 3 months old, Switch Co has quickly established itself as a great grab-and-go, and is proving quite popular with the youth and young working professionals. A mixture of sandwiches that are both simple, and unique, fall into the quick snack category for the busy bee who is always on the move. Their big logo on the outer wall makes this mini unit in Kiulap, hard to miss. The current favourites are the eggy salad sandwich and the Spam Musubi Sushi Sandwich. I tried both and quite liked the latter. The natural sweetness of the sushi rice was a pleasant contrast to the natural saltiness of the thick cheddar slice, and spam, while the cucumber provided a lovely crunch. The seaweed wrap interlacing the pair of sandwiches ties everything together. Take note that they close at 1pm because after that, a switch takes place. Keep an eye on them and see for yourself. •• IG: @switchco.bn
Aurora’s Café & Tea House This caught me by surprise! Nestled within Setia Kenangan II is an Instagramworthy boutique bakery-café. This is the home of a friendly, BTS-addicted owner who creates luscious cakes,
customised macaroons, and even hosts K-Pop events resulting in ground-to-first floor spanning queues. My quest led me to Aurora’s Café & Tea House because it holds a secret ace up its sleeve. Based on a Japanese sandwich that became hugely popular in 2016, this place makes a killer Wanpaku Sando. There are currently 2 types in their series with plans for more to be added. The glorious stacks of vibrant colours and textures formed a sando that I greedily stuffed into my mouth with no shame at all.
Crunchy green and purple lettuce, with carrots. Gooey egg and cheese. Tender chicken breast. Stuffed between slightly toasted bread, it was every bit as tasty as it was pretty; and to save you time, once you are done you are in the perfect place for dessert. •• Unit B2, 1st Flr, Block B, Setia Kenangan, Spg 150-17-20 Tel: 673-7329396 IG: @auroracafe.bn FB: Aurora’s Café Tea Room

The guys and gals running the October Coffee Gaya café look like great fun (especially when everyone starts playing dress up for Halloween and get followers to vote for a winner). Costume parties aside their ciabatta bread selection of sandwiches of which a few have Korean twists to them have garnered good reviews. These include the Kimchi Sandwich with homemade beef patties, and a popular chicken sandwich that I have my eye set on as it brings slight levels of sweet heat from its gochujang peppers to the table. With a wide range of fare presented with a youthful energy and vibe within a modern setting, Chius The Modern Local is well named. With only a couple of sandwiches on an expansive menu, it is the Chiuken (I see what you did there, well played) that grabbed my attention. The parmesan
breaded chicken breast is not prepared in bulk but only upon taking your order, resulting in a sandwich with a freshness level dialed up to the max. This ensures juicy and perfectly cooked meat that we can all appreciate. Alternatively, yell out “cheat day!” and enjoy some melted cheddar, mozzarella, and parmesan
and veggie rich fillings, I neglected the sweeter side of life. Such as the Sweet Stack – a peanut butter and jam sourdough toast, or the Nutella & Banana Sweet Stack, which also has candied hazelnuts and mixed seeds mixed into its namesake. Separately, the Trio Cheese Toastie is an herb cream cheese delight, while

NOMS Malaysia A grilled Mac N Cheese Sandwich? Say what? The fact that it is not in my hands being raised to my mouth at this very moment is blasphemy I tell you. The aptly named Noms, which has three outlets at Signature, Metrocity, and La Promenade, is a testament to how nommy the food is. The Grilled Veggie & Mushroom looks healthy and tasty. My love for anything spicy makes me want to put the Big N Hawt to the test. The Grilled Tuna Melt turns a standard fish filling that some find boring into something appealing. However, at the end of the day, if there is anything I plan to shove into my gob, it is going to be that Grilled Mac N Cheese with Beef Bacon. It would be bad form to check out delicious and aesthetically pleasing handheld goodies from one Malaysian state in Borneo, only to pay no heed to the other. So despite the protestations of my stomach complaining of the torture my eyes are putting it through, I stoically proceed to wrap up this hunt’s trilogy by sweeping my gaze to our other neighbours 867 kilometres away. Here are some noteworthy locales for our Sarawakian Sandwich Search.
Dine with FED There is a pretty nice variety of drool-inducing offerings on the menu here, and that is before we even get started at just going through their sandwiches. Focus man, focus. With a preference for very generous fillings the entire selection here looks fat – and I mean that in a good way. Hefty and bulky in appearance, everything from the Chicken Schnitzel, and the Pulled Turkey, to the Roasted Beef, and the Turkey Melt
EARCH
looks divine. Interestingly enough, considering how big a carnivore I am, it is the Fried Cauliflower & Ricotta specifically that caught my eye. Lucky Seven Sandwich Now this place is certainly different. Cute and small for a nice get away form the hubbub of hectic life, this non-Halal sandwich specialist has some offerings that raised my eyebrow out of intrigue. A generous purple taro filling actually makes up one of their most requested sandwiches, while the Tang Yuan sandwich was a truly way-out-there attempt at innovation and doing something no one else had tried. Their main staple however is their Korean Street Sandwiches which is based on a thick vegetable omelette and chicken ham filling that can do no wrong. Despite all that, I have to say, it is the Grilled Pork Jerky Sandwich that had my tummy rumbling. It is hard not to like any kind of jerky after all. •• Lot 552, Grd Flr, Pelita Commercial Centre, Miri Tel: 6011-26817877 IG: @luckysevensandwich FB: Lucky Seven Sandwich Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

appetite Good Chocolate Good Life All right folks put your tongues back in your mouths and calm down, as there is one thing we need to establish quickly. I have some bad news, good news, and even better news. Ben Sia Pastry, the confectionary maestro responsible for sending many taste buds into a state of bliss is a limited edition and exclusive experience. Those who get their hands on his goods definitely have something to be drool over. The bad news: His wonderful chocolate bon bons are prepared as large single batches thrice a year – on Valentines Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmas only. Incredibly time intensive, each batch of bon bons will have a few hundred pieces per flavour, and seeing as we only want a few of each this is a process that cannot be scaled down to cater to more people in light of his full-time job. The man seriously hustles enough as it is so you can gobble, munch, and snack away. The good news: The growth of his home business in recent times has led to his decision to commit 100% fully to his passion for pastry and chocolates, which inevitably leads to the better news: that maybe, just maybe, if we keep our fingers crossed (and our toes too!) that we might see more batches produced more regularly. Until then however, mark your calendars for those 3 times of the year where he gets down to business. First come, first serve, and you do not want to miss out.

Specifically, the ultramarine blue bricked wall behind the counter. That cool tone helped my brain tune out from the brightness, heat and humidity that define a typical day here. Supported by earthy tones all around, Olie’s Café in Seria makes for a pleasant getaway – 1 point guys. Look closely at the logo. What do you see? If you saw just words then it is spoiler time, for it is actually a top-down view of a cup of coffee with the café’s namesake spelt out as foam art. The creativity here flows as smoothly as a cup of Bulletproof Coffee or Butterfly Pea Flower Tea – 2 points

Can’t Think without Coffee Guilty! I definitely fall into the category of being a zombie until I drain at least half of my morning brew. Whether you are an early bird or on the way to the office, residents of Seria have access to a cute little coffee bar where they can kick-start their brains with some much needed stimulus. Book in advance, order a pick-up or if you slept in and were late for work you can have it delivered too! That’s the Thinking Cup Coffee modus operandi and it is a good one. They have even gone far enough to charge a dollar less on Mondays to help you offset any blues you may have as the reality of the weekend being over hits you and you resume the weekly grind. So thoughtful! Though strong coffee is their area of specialty you can also find tea and small snacks here too. Some munchies such as cookies and cakes are prepared in-house, while other items including sourdough pastries are brought in from other sources. Around a year and a half since opening to the public, this locale is a pleasant example of bigger not always being better, and we loved the getaway experience afforded by this charming little spot.

Delight in Every Bite Finding a person who does not love chocolate is a difficult task. These mythical creatures do indeed exist but are few and far between. They are outnumbered however by those who profess pure adoration for this most glorious of all confectionary creations. Even more rare in Brunei is being able to find local producers of these bite sized delights. We are here to tell you that they too, do exist. Zaren Chocolatier anyone? We say we love chocolate, but do you love chocolate as much as Zarefah – who, believe it or not, established her snack brand in 2011? Joining classes in Australia, Malaysia, and what many consider the gold standard of the chocolate production world, Belgium, she is confident that in due time it is possible to recreate quality products to rival established brands. We love the confidence, because while she admits it is a huge undertaking, it is a challenge she wants to take on. Her research into the local market reveals a customer base less interested in fruity fillings, which prefer munching on nut and biscuit coatings. Though it is up to you as she often caters to customised orders. Personally, her melt-in-your-mouth Matcha chocolate has caught my eye. Go on everyone and treat that sweet tooth!

We miss travelling too The borders closed then they reopened with conditions. Then they closed again and reopened with smaller destination lists. Then they closed and were followed by approved green lanes and smaller travel bubbles. It was at this time 9 months ago in August 2021 that the Airport Lounge Bistro began welcoming with open arms anyone who badly needed to scratch their travel itch. Offering a place to unwind and chill as they sought to recreate the scenario of customers being passengers once again, this steakhouse and wine bar targeted one specific demographic – all of us! With restaurant staff dressed in pilot and cabin crew uniforms there is something pleasing and nostalgic even when we are greeted by a turn of phrase we did not realised we missed so much. “Good afternoon sir, may I please see your passport and boarding pass?” From the Check-in Nachos, and Departure Salad to the Pilot’s Pizza, and more, we love this gimmicky take on this dine in experience. You can even apply for a passport that entitles you to discounts and new offers every month on your return trips. Design wise – the wine bottles hanging on the wall in separate columns beneath stencils of planes labeled for the country from where the wines originated from is a clever touch.

So naturally we were super happy when we learned that while we were busy figuring out our place within the bounds of life’s new normal, the Kota Kinabalu Aquascape Centre had opened up a new addition on its premises. The Green Garden Café, which was launched a year ago, adds more flavour to the other features available, which also includes botanical and butterfly gardens, as well as a freshwater fish aquarium. Not too far away from the Kuching city centre is a gem of a dine-in spot for those with an appreciation for greenery. Growing in reputation alongside its namesake, the landscaped setup of the Bvlganvilla Bar & Lounge is by Mother Nature’s standards an aesthetic hideaway from the hustle and bustle of modern city life. Pronounced as Bu-gan-villa, it is named after a combination of a Roman upper class country home as well as the bougainvillea flower, which comes in a white hue as well as vibrant shades of a rich dark pink. This residence with its sun baked yellow exterior emulates the vibes of a vineyard winery of which its tasty offerings has succeeded in drawing increasingly more clientele since following its re-opening some 7 months ago. The interior has a simple yet classic feel to it with retro poster prints and artwork adorning yellowbronzy hued walls, but we honestly think that when you have outdoor dining areas like this, indoors should definitely be your second choice. A wooden decking with parasols and colourful beanbags fringed by a water channel, next to a lengthy hut styled roof by the bar, nearby a cemented pathway surrounded by well-maintained plants. Specialising in mainly Western cuisine such as salads, pastas, pizzas, steaks and sandwich subs; this is a great place to pay your respects to both nature and your belly.

European ambience Passing through the portal that is the entranceway into Trevi Café you can be forgiven for thinking that you have just been transported over 11, 000km to a point between Rome and Paris. Cooked up by Joline Song and Janice Wong, these home-based mothers dreamt of opening a café. One took to interior design to transform a concept to reality while the other perfected the homemade delicacies she wished to sell such as her chicken pie and signature banana cheesecake. Bringing experienced restaurateur, Nathan Ngu, into the picture resulted in what Sarawakians have access to today, and wow was it ever worth it! The ambience of this space, which is both charming and quaint, is reminiscent of classical Western Europe with its Italian and Parisian inspired
architecture. The symbolic water fountain at the café’s centre is named after the Trevi de Fontana in Italy that stands at the junction to three streets, and also is a shout out to the 3 original partners that pursued this endeavor together. From a courtyard and a fireplace to the dining hall, as well as corners full of memorabilia, I am willing to bet that not a single visitor will dine in and leave without taking at least a few pictures. The perfect place for all-day brunches.

NIGHT OWL I take, you take, we all partake in cheesecake! And if you do not then there is something wrong with you. That is right, I said it. Cheesecakes are glorious and even though none of us need an excuse for not gorging ourselves on one too many slices, should you want to find an effective way to ration these heavenly delights, then you need to check out this night owl. With people ordering in more during the recent lockdown, this baker took to spending her nights whipping up goodies galore for people like you and me. Today what we want however, are small, circular, and loaded with creamy-cheesy goodness. The Night Owl’s cheesecakes are super cute as she prepares mini versions that make me think at times that it is a shame they have to be eaten … before I proceed to think that I can always order more once they are in my belly, and therefore proceed to munch away. The cheesecakes are actually just 1 flavour that make up her series of small cakes which also include red velvet, potato, and matcha to name a few. (non-cheese fans have re-entered the chat). See for yourselves.

VEGGIE RECIPE So I’ve been on a bit of a health kick recently and eateries that I’ve heard good things about over the past year have now suddenly appeared on my radar stronger than ever. Take Veggie Recipe for example. Even though they do have a selection of dishes catering to carnivores, for those more interested in trying out the meals, snacks, and beverages of its namesake then this place should be in your top 3 go-to list. I love my tofu and tempeh but this quarter my stomach is craving Italian. Number 1 on my mind is the organic spinach pasta with creamy parmesan sauce oh Mama Mia! Topped off with diced bell pepper and button mushroom what is plated and placed in front of you is every bit as delish as it is appealing to the eye. If it is a hot day (when is it not?) then a berries-lemonade juice is a great thirst quencher to try. A good energy boost to overcome any potential lethargy that comes from stuffing your face with lots of good food.

GET YOUR FIX There are few among us capable of getting by without that hit of caffeine first thing in the morning, let alone taking on the challenge of an entire day without it. From bringing our brains out of the hazy fugue of sleepiness in the AM to providing that extra energy stimulating boost in the PM, let’s face it, most of us need that fix. In Tutong, nearby the cinema is a little place that holds this principle close to their heart. I found the sketch of the chemical structure of caffeine adorning the wall to be a clever touch, and tribute to the team behind the scene’s passion for one of the world’s most popular beverages. Even their logo is a pretty fun play on the concept, with a wrench emerging from a coffee cup. So whether you are a resident of the area or simply passing by, this place is definitely worth checking out. Hit them up for a good cup of C8H10N4O2 and chill out for a bit.

GRAIN HOUSE A tightly enclosed grouping of buildings with several unnamed smaller intersecting roads, the Menglait area can often surprise when locales of interest pop up from time to time within. Such as the Grain House for example, a non-Halal restaurant operating on the same row as Mum’s Bakery. A small kopitiam, this has a decent selection of tasty food. I love Kolo Mee as a quick breakfast or a mid afternoon snack as much as the next person, so the next time you find yourself criss-crossing this warren of lengthy complexes looking for something cheap and cheerful, then this is the place for you. Like a few other places in the Sultanate, even as we moved into the endemic phase they chose to play it extra safe on behalf of all of us. More reason that you should give them a round of support by stopping by these for some quick takeaway, and instant get-in-my-tummy satisfaction. If you still would like a helping of something noodle but wanted to avoid dry dishes, then we recommend the laksa. Mmmm so good.

JUNK RESTAURANT Every now and then you need to gorge yourself on pure junk, no explanation needed. So imagine how I felt upon learning that Kuching is home to an eatery that embraced that name with gusto”. Contrary to what you may think however, the title is a reference to its eclectic collection of stuff decorating its interior and not its offerings as this restaurant has a rather large and diverse menu with many fantastic dishes. What am I gaping at this quarter though? Why, the satay pizza of course. Not small pieces of chopped up satay meat spread across a pizza base, but 8 large, tender and juicy pieces of meat on sticks adorning the top of 8 slices of oh my yummy goodness. You are welcome to try their healthy vegetarian pizza if you like, but the satay version has my name all over it, so go get your own. 80, Wayang Street, 93100, Kuching TEL: 6016-8892044 IG: @thejunkkch FB: The Junk Restaurant

Cash withdrawals and deposits can be made from Automated Teller Machines (ATM) that can be found in various shopping complexes and bank branches all over the country. TELECOMMUNICATIONS FRIDAY PRAYER TIME
All retail, food and beverage outlets and business offices are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.
Islamic Etiquette Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome to mosques, provided some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times – your hotel, tour guide, or Muslim locals can help you determine a good time to visit.
Most public phones operate on prepaid calling cards which can be obtained in all major shopping areas and retail stores. Mobile prepaid SIM cards are also available for purchase at DST Communications Sdn Bhd (DST Com), Imagine Sdn Bhd, and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (PCSB) service counters as well as the respective authorised vendors’ stores.
