No one knows Borneo better than its inhabitants. This is an island full of hidden beauty, fascinating cultures and a filmworthy history. While there is plenty about the island to be gleaned from the Internet, we spoke to 3 unique residents of Borneo who have spent a lifetime nurturing their special hobbies and cultivating an interest in the heritage of the people on this island. It is through these individuals’ dedication to their interest that enables the culture of this place to live on. Through their collections and research, they enlighten and educate us with the stories and history that are embedded in these works of art. Meet the book collector, the sketch artist and the bead lady and read their stories about rare books on Borneo, the intricate art of basket weaving and the beads of the indigenous tribes of this island.

as he gives us a background on each book and points out the exact page in a book where there is a reference to Brunei, or an illustration or a photo of the country. He should know because he read all these books, some even more than once. Lim tells us that it was his interest in archaeological history that first spurred him to rare collect books ten years ago. What started out as a business idea quickly turned into an interest. Even when the book business did not fare well financially, his love for collecting books burgeoned as time went by. “Why do I hang onto this business when I know the outcome is not promising? Well,

Presently he has amassed over 200 antique books and the total value of his collection would amount to slightly over B$100,000. One book that is certainly not for sale is the most prized item in his collection: On the Fringe of Eastern Seas, which in UK is entitled The City of Many Waters. This is the only known book in the world that contains an accurate account of Brunei at the end of the 19th century. “I went all the way to London’s National Gallery to look for the author, Peter Blundell, in order to find this amazing book”, explained Lim. The book is about the author’s life in Brunei, recounted from the days when he arrived in this country till the time he became the first British

Resident in 1906. “It’s a very interesting book. You would not get tired of reading it, over and over and over again, as I have!” This book and a few others in his collection are deemed by Lim to be priceless. When asked if he would sell the book by Peter Blundell – a book which is, he revealed, coveted by many – he shook his head and laughed, “Books like this, I don’t want to sell! I’ve had many customers looking for this book, offering me a thousand dollars, but I’m not selling it.”

An Expert on Beads Text: Iris Tan

Image: Sidney Wee 02

BEADS THROUGHOUT HISTORY Beads are wonderfully customisable and perfect for jewellery. Beadcraft make very popular fashion accessories and have certainly made its mark in the fashion industry. Beads have been part of the Sarawak natives’ attire for a very long time. Traditional costumes that have been long donned by the natives in Sarawak and Borneo include the beaded cylindrical-shaped hats worn by Bidayuh ladies during festive Gawai events, the colourful Iban marik empang beaded shoulder yolks that have become a popular Sarawak souvenir, and the Orang Ulu headgear that ranges from a simple beaded headband to a glorious ‘war bonnet’ elaborately decorated with beads, animal hair and feathers. Beads are historical pieces linking cultures and continents. In Borneo, beads are part of traditions a thousand years old. Once, beads were used as tools in rituals for shamans, endowing powers and protection. They were also used as status symbols: those who wore bead hats with certain decorative motifs came from an aristocratic class. To learn more about beads, check out Heidi’s book: Beads of Borneo a fantastic book that explains the significance of beads in Borneo’s social, religious and cultural life. Available on Amazon.com.

Image: Amazon.com

Image: Sarawak Tourism Board

As the honorary curator of beads at the Sarawak Museum, Heidi Munan certainly knows a lot about beads. This witty and articulate Swiss writer has been living in Sarawak since she migrated to the state in the 1960’s (a move, she confesses, was made for a young man). Heidi’s first job in Sarawak was in a classroom where she spent a few years teaching history and literature to sixth form students. These first few years were also spent adapting to the initial culture shock that she faced moving from the West to this little slice of the East. Two of her books Culture Shock! Borneo and Culture Shock! Malaysia – were written as a handy survival guide to help ease the foreign settler into this neck of the woods. It has been 49 years since Heidi first moved to Sarawak and since then, she has learned – and continues to learn - more about Borneo and its cultures than Borneans would take the trouble to learn! As a writer, Heidi has published more than 20 books on what she has learned and studied about the island and has received numerous awards for her work. In 2000, she was awarded the Hornbill Tourism Award and the Malaysia Tourism Award for Best Travel Writer. She has also won awards for Best Children’s Book in 2006 and 2008, and another Hornbill Tourism Award for Best Writer in the Literary Category in 2009. Despite all her accolades, this energetic author is not resting on her laurels yet.

Image: Heidi Munan 03

In 2005, she published Beads of Borneo, a literary work on her lifelong passion - the beauty, history and mystique of beads and the bead culture in this part of Southeast Asia. Heidi’s interest in beads started when she came to Sarawak and learnt about the significance of beads in the social and traditional context of Sarawak’s indigenous people. Local tribes throughout history have used beads made from a variety of materials such as bone, animal horns, stones, shells and glass in jewellery, costumes, tools and war bonnets. Historically, beads have been used to identify one’s social standing in the community and they were even used as currency and spiritual amulets. The history of beads goes further back than anyone can guess and Heidi has done extensive work and research on the topic. Material culture in Borneo is her main field of study - beads are considered a crucial segment of this subject - and the tremendous amount of work from her independent explorations and research has earned her much respect in Malaysia and worldwide. She is considered the resident expert on the subject and is often called upon to give her opinions or to help identify different types of beads. As for her own collection of beads, Heidi admits to having very few but she assures us that this is hardly an issue - as an honorary curator of beads at the Sarawak Museum, she can look at and admire the Museum’s collection as often as she likes!

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD DURIAN

All Hail the King of Fruits! Text: Intan Abu Daniel & Pauline Chan Images: Filzah Saiman

The Durian and Fruits Festival, held at Zone A of the Bio-Innovation Corridor in Kg Tungku, kicked off on August 18 with a ceremony launched by The Honourable Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources. The guest of honour toured the stalls with his wife, Datin Hjh Norlina, and even tried his hand at opening a durian with a ‘durian opener’ – a tool designed and developed by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood. The week-long event featured an exhibition showing how the king of fruits is produced. There were stalls selling agricultural products such as fertilizers, farm tools and machineries as well as plenty of activities such as durian cooking contests and colouring competitions for children.

20

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

The real attraction was the long rows of tables laden with locally grown durians and other brightly-coloured fruits that were for sale. Many people turned up to sample the fruits and you could hear lively bargaining between vendors and customers over price. Those who managed to strike the right bargain left cheerfully with plastic bags full of spiky durians. The most traffic was found at a handful of stalls that hosted an “Eat All You Can” durian promotion – at B$7 per head, eager durian fans wiped out a range of local durians such as Durian Kuning, Durian Pulu, Durian Suluk and Durian Otak Udang Galah. The one-week event was a spectacular success that recorded an attendance of 20,574 visitors, fruit lovers and durian connoisseurs.

If you are out scouting for durians, how would you know if a durian is good or fresh? Here are some tips we learnt from a durian purveyor in Bandar Seri Begawan on choosing a good durian: Yellow-shelled durians foretell sweetness, but that doesn’t determine taste. Taste or flavour is a very individual thing. There is a variety of durian flavours: milky, creamy, bittersweet, plain bitter, XO flavour (a tinge of alcoholic aftertaste), nangka taste etc. Some people postulate that durians that drop on their own have more flavour compared to those that are cut from the branches. That cannot be taken as a rule of thumb as it depends on the tree. Cut durians will ripen in 2 to 3 days and they can be very flavourful as well. In general, look for durians with a green shell, widely-spaced thorns and a ‘wobbly’ sound when you shake it, and you will most likely have a winner!

Sight check - Look at the spikes. Widely-spaced thorns indicate fleshy content while narrowly-spaced thorns mean skinny helpings inside. Long, big thorns and thorns that grow inwards indicate a higher grade of fruit so expect to pay premium for it. Check the bottom, if it is cracked, it may be over-ripe but that is not necessarily a bad thing. If the crack is less than 3 inches, the quality may not be affected. Take a peek inside and see if the fruit looks firm, then give it a try because it may still be delicious.

Smell check - Smell the durian, if there is a strong smell, it is very likely that it’s good. If there is no smell, it is probably not ripe yet. Sound check - Scrape the durian surface with a small knife or anything solid that is handy, if it sounds crispy it is fresh because the thorns are still sharp and hard. Soft thorns mean they have been sitting around for some time and hence a duller sound is produced. Shake check - Shake the durian and feel if there is movement within. Movement means it is ripe and the texture will be good. A durian that produces no wobbling sound means it is either unripe or too ripe, and the texture will be too hard or too watery. Burrowing insect check - Look for holes around the durian, if there is a tiny hole somewhere, there could be a worm (larva of an insect) that has burrowed into it.

biG trail Sinar Serapi has been opened to the public since 2010. Its main feature, for the eager young visitors anyway, is the ‘lake‘ - a large, shallow body of water that is ideal for all sorts of sports.

Sinar Serapi is officially designated as an Eco-Theme Park Resort, but as far as the under-20s of Kuching are concerned it’s a waterpark. Bring along sunglasses, a big hat, sunscreen and a change of dry clothes!

On a fine Sunday afternoon it can be thronged with a colourful variety of craft. There are kayaks, propelled in a straightforward way with double-bladed paddles. On a breezy day, miniature sailing boats skim the surface. And then there are pedalos that look something like floating bicycles - a pedal mechanism powers a small screw at the stern while a rudder steers the contraption around the lake. Hardly steerable, but immensely enjoyable are the ‘bubbles’. These are large well-padded plastic cylinders, agitated by the person or persons seemingly trapped inside. During one of my visits, a bunch of lads were screeching and hollering in a ‘bubble’, trying to move it in one direction by running up the curved inside slope and not getting very far, until an elder brother kindly kayaked out and towed them back to shore. The lads in question didn’t even bother to towel themselves off and

Sinar Serapi is a popular venue for family day trips; there is water play, food, and ample space for lounging around. The main building resembles a huge barn. Parties and gatherings can be held here. Food, from drinks and snacks to full-dress meals, is available, as well as BBQ buffets for functions like weddings, business conferences and the like. There are ambitious plans in the pipelines: entertainment which would include a variety of activities such as world class concerts, festivals, carnivals, flea markets, live band and karaoke, games like pool tables, table tennis, dart and carom boards, and even mountain bike riding and jungle trekking in the hills behind the park. You need to just drop in once in a while and see what develops. 02

Paddling The Surf Text: Pamela Fletcher Images: Linawa Photography

Yes, it is here. The surfboard with training wheels. Well, that’s not entirely true and if you were to tell Richard Gower I said that, he would probably give you a massive eye roll. Richard who hails from the UK has been sea kayaking and surfing since his teens and has even taken to the waves of Durban and Bali. When he first set eyes on a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board, he was instantly fascinated by it. “You can surf with the board and also paddle it on flat water to explore the area at leisure,” he says. And it is a fantastic full-body workout. Depending on what you want, you can take it nice and gentle or go full and hard for the ultimate fitness workout.

24

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

SUP boarding made its maiden splash in Kota Kinabalu in early August and has been winning over new fans since. Together with his Sabahan wife Nora, Richard has decided to make Sabah home for now as he can see stand up paddle taking off in Sabah in a big way. “My wife had taken me to explore the Tunku Abdul Rahman islands and I got to see how amazing the reef and fishes were – it was magical! That was six years ago and now that we have two beautiful daughters, I also want them to grow up knowing about Sabah and its wonderful nature,” he adds.

guard, hat and a generous amount of sunblock to keep safe from the sun as SUP is apparently very addictive and you will find yourself spending more time on the board than intended. Even non-swimmers can have a go at it as they will wear a life jacket and have a leash on the board attached to their ankle to stop the board from getting away in case they fall off. The age range for this sport is from about 10 to over 70 and one does need to be in reasonably good physical condition. At this initial stage, Richard is conducting introductory SUP classes and trips to beaches around Kota Kinabalu and the nearby islands but he hopes to combine it with safari-type trips to explore Sabah’s more adventurous and scenic beaches along its coastline in the future.

So, why not drop Richard or Nora a line and sign up for a SUP session?

t was an inspiring day for all women on 27th August 2014, when the highly anticipated book ‘Women of Brunei – Inspiring Life Stories’ was launched at the Brunei Hotel by guest of honour Datin Hajah Adinah binti Osman, Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. Written by Cecile Castilla and Nicola Lynskey, the 140-page coffee table book features the life stories of 21 inspiring Bruneian women from all walks of life. During the event, BIBD Chief Finance Officer cum Deputy Managing Director Hjh Noraini Hj Sulaiman, in her speech, spoke of the significant evolution of the role of women in Brunei and around the world. Today, women receive growing recognition and appreciation for their contributions to their profession and to society. Bruneians are fortunate and blessed, as the nation provides the citizens with equal opportunities for success, and the women of Brunei are known for their strong determination and business acumen.

A bank that is truly ‘Bruneian at Heart’, BIBD has been able to support the visions of many Bruneians through the BIBD Ar-Rahnu (an Islamic pawn-broking concept that seeks to improve socio-economic conditions for many by creating an alternative source of capital-raising for those ineligible to become a normal bank financing customer) and ALAF (Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future) a program that aims to provide assistance to underprivileged and orphaned students, through sponsorships of basic needs, educational items and welfare, as well as mentoring and counselling. And BIBD will continue with its commitment to help Bruneians fulfill their ambitions. BIBD also calls out to the public in appreciating the role of women in nation building and also to support BIBD in elevating the awareness on ALAF, and together build a nation of well-educated subjects, aligned to His Majesty’s 2035 Vision. “Women of Brunei – Inspiring Life Stories” is available at all Best Eastern book stores and at Crimson Square at the Empire Hotel & Country Club, Jerudong. 10% of the books sales will go to the BIBD ALAF Programme.

Through the sponsorship of this book, BIBD pays tribute to these outstanding women of Brunei, and hopes that these inspirational stories will motivate Bruneian women to pursue their own dreams. 04

About fifteen years ago, it was a sad Saturday night if it wasn’t spent at the Jerudong Park Playground. During those days, an empty Jerudong Park on weekends was unheard of – the pathways were full of people, the rides had queues, the gerai barely had any empty seats and you would have needed to circle the parking lot at least three times before you could find a parking space. Jerudong Park went into a stage of restructuring and has recently re-emerged with new vitality. On the evening of May 18, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Wakeel launched the reopening of one of Brunei’s most treasured landmarks and with a spectacular eruption of fireworks in the evening sky, Jerudong Park came back into our lives! Visitors can enjoy new attractions such as the fun laser-filled Lazer Maze, 25-metre tall Ferris Wheel that lights up like a city at night and a gold mine-themed Junior Roller Coaster. Familyfriendly classic rides such as the double-decker carousel, bumper cars and pedal boats have been restored and are available again to the public. The mini water park is still under construction but it is ultimately set to make a splashy entrance later this year. 01

First Impressions There are many varieties of cuisine available in Gadong Central and Filio Restaurant, specializing in Pinoy cuisine, is a timely addition to the location. Filio’s contemporary minimalist space spans two floors, seats 80 people and has separate rooms for private gatherings. Food We started with an interesting salad, Fresh Paco, comprising raw pakis (young fern tops), tomatoes and salted eggs, tossed in vinaigrette and topped with ricotta cheese. The Sizzling Sisig, with chopped grilled chicken mixed with spices and green chili, packed some heat with that combination. The Kare Kare was a sweet stew of beef, oxtail, ox tripe and vegetables and the Lengua featured thinly sliced ox tongue in a flavourful mushroom sauce – both dishes are perfect for meat-lovers but if tripe or ox tongue is not your thing,

40

you can go for the equally delicious Crispy Tilapia served with grilled eggplant, tomatoes, onions and a sautéed shrimp paste. We finished our meal with a very sweet, rich and beautifully presented Leche Flan. Drinks The standard list of beverages is available, but for a real thirst-quencher, try a tall glass of Filio Iced Tea. Service The service staff was attentive and accommodating. Price For the amount of food we had, it was enough to feed five ravenous people and it would amount to around B$60.

Verdict Filio has introduced Pinoy cuisine to a dining scene that has so far been unfamiliar with its unique flavours and offerings, so we say it’s about time!

First Impressions One of the new additions to StarLodge, Momo Restaurant is elegantly designed with a dash of funky – green seats, snazzy chandeliers and framed prints of ‘M’ and ‘O’ pepper the walls. Food Premium grilled cuisine is Momo’s specialty and here they offer a new concept of personalizing your meal: diners choose a meat and pair it with a side dish and sauce - this gives diners the option of having an Asian or Western-style meal based on their selection from a wide variety of side dishes and sauces. We started with salad and soup, both had a unique Momo twist: there was grilled romaine lettuce in the Caesar salad and the prawn bisque had a tinge of spiciness and lemongrass. For our main course, we had the Australian rack of lamb with black pepper sauce paired with ultra creamy truffle-oil infused mashed potato; cod fish fillet with lemongrass assam sauce and

The food was delicious and the creative sauces and side dishes were a nice change from the usual mushroom sauce and French fries. For dessert, we dug into a Ginger Chocolate Cream Brulee, although tasty we felt it needed more ginger to make a stronger impression. Drinks The drinks menu offers the standard fare of beverages with a few standouts like the refreshing Orange & Peach Blast. Service The staff was friendly and very attentive to our needs. Price The price is as what you would expect for a good steak dinner in Brunei and the large satisfying portions is a big plus.

Verdict Momo will certainly make an impression as the new place to go for a good steak.

First Impressions The restaurant aims to produce the nyonya atmosphere with plain wooden furniture. The pleasant décor includes some interesting glass artwork and there is an air-conditioned ‘inside’ section as well as an alfresco ‘outside’. Pinang Nyonya is a little out of town so visitors will need to take a taxi. Food The menu is small but choice and the food here is non-halal. Only the best ingredients get past the kitchen door and cooked to perfection by Madam Elsie in the inimitable nyonya style made famous by many generations of Straits Chinese. Some canny Kuching townsfolk come here especially for the koay teow, a fried rice noodle dish topped by fat prawns. Drinks Traditional drinks like citronella-grass tea are

available along with a range of soft drinks. Service Staff is quiet, attentive and well informed about the finer points of the menu. Price For Kuching standards, the food here is medium-priced. A dinner for two, with only soft drinks, comes to RM36. At lunchtime, the set lunches with easy-to-remember names Penang Bridge, Komtar, Gurney Drive and Georgetown - offer good value at just around RM10, including a soft drink.

Verdict For visitors, Pinang Nyonya is a good introduction to nyonya cuisine; for regular locals, we come again and again for the ambience, the service and the excellent food!

First Impressions The warm colours and ambient lighting exude the charm of a classic bistro with enough space between tables to give diners privacy for conversation and relaxation. The restaurant is located in a quiet hub of small cafes, coffee houses and convenience stores at the exclusive Peak Vista condominium complex. Food La Safran presents the distinctive features of French cooking which is all about using fresh ingredients and classic techniques to bring out the natural flavours in each dish. The menu has a good selection of entrées, soups, salads, mains and desserts to give you a taste of classic French cuisine as well as a mix of standard western fare. We had the chicken salad that came with chunky pieces of pan grilled chicken on a bed of crisp greens drizzled with a light fresh dressing. The steak was a modest cut of prime sirloin with a pinot noir sauce served with a side of vegetables and creamy mashed

potatoes. The linguine in olive oil was perfectly balanced with the salty flavour of smoked duck slices. We ended our meal with the classic vanilla crème brulee and chocolate fondant. La Safran’s prime emphasis on quality ingredients and clean flavours really came through with each dish that we had. Drinks Their beverage list consists of a range of quality gourmet coffees, teas and the standard offerings of juices, mocktails and soft drinks. Service It was a quiet day with a small lunch crowd so we were well attended to by the service staff.

Verdict The portions were just enough to allow us to savour the different flavours of each dish and still leave room for a decadent sweet treat at the end. The restaurant comes up with new promotions every few months to keep you coming back for more of French-inspired cuisine. Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

Kuching Laksa Mania!

#2, Grd Flr Bangunan Hasbullah 2, Gadong BE4119, Bandar Seri Begawan Tel: 820 1212

Images: Filzah Saiman

In Borneo, there’s one thing that is as indigenous as the hornbill – the Kuching Laksa. Also known as Sarawak Laksa, this spicy soup noodle dish is ubiquitous in East Malaysia and Brunei but it is somewhat hard to find outside these regions. A good Kuching laksa has hints of spices such as cumin, coriander, star anise, cardamoms, cloves and nutmeg as well fresh herbs like lemongrass, galangal and chili. Blend all these spices together to make a paste and use this as a base for the soup, which you can make from chicken bones and prawn shells. When the stock is ready, add some coconut milk, ladle the broth over your noodles and serve with a wedge of lime and a dollop of sambal. Let the laksa mania begin!

44

Borneo.Insider’s.Guide

This was a favourite with the biG team. What gave it the edge was the soup – it had a good blend of spices and coconut milk so the consistenc y was just right. The shredded chicken was moist and actually tast y (not the boiled and dr y chicken breast meat). Their thinly sliced

egg omelet paired well with the long mee hoon and to top it all of f, a solid sambal chili thrown into the mix gave it a confident red colour and rich f lavour. Good to the last drop of soup! Price: B$4.00

The Bello laksa comes with strips of squid and hard-boiled egg instead of the typical omelet. The colour of the soup is enticing, the presentation is appetizing and the soup made it a winner. Everything the eyes can see on the top is fresh and proportionate to the amount of mee hoon, while the soup makes it all worth a trip to Bello for this.

Hot on the heels of Bello is Golden Coffee’s laksa. Their soup is a tasty concoction but what made it a pleasure was their prawns - fresh, f irm and cooked just right (we deplore prawns that are rubber y from overcooking). This dish comes with neat slices of fish cake, shredded chicken breast, bean sprouts and sprinklings of spring onions and fried shallots.

This laksa had julienned cucumber added to the usual handful of blanched bean sprouts. This is a variation that we liked too because of the extra crunchiness of the cucumber. The larger-than-usual prawns and the bright fresh-chili sambal was an A+ even though the soup had a much thicker consistency and was almost gravy-like.

Although the chicken rice here is the more popular order of the day, the laksa has been on the menu for sometime. Their version has all the flavours and toppings of a typical Kuching laksa and with the numerous SCR Express branches around town, the easy availability makes it a breeze to satisfy a Kuching laksa craving when it hits you.

The Kuching laksa is a perennial favourite here. Their version is flavourful and they are generous with the soup. Although it may not be necessar y but adding their sambal to the mix heightens the flavour and you’ll be glad you did.

Lost/stolen Passports and Credit Cards If you ever do find your passport missing, go to the nearest Police Station to lodge a police report and inform your embassy to seek further assistance. If your credit cards get lost, make sure you call your bank to cancel the cards immediately. Islamic Etiquette Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on the diversity of its people – including their religions. Visitors are welcome to mosques, provided some etiquette is followed. In general, proper attire is required; women are required to cover their head, shoulders, and knees. Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times – your hotel, tour guide, or even friendly muslim locals can help you determine a good time to visit. Smoking Smoking is prohibited in both airconditioned and non air-conditioned areas in Brunei Darussalam. Smoking is banned in specific places, including government buildings, hospitals, recreational and educational centres, public transport and restaurants. Offenders could be fined. Tourist Information Centre Located at 2 places around Brunei - the arrival hall of the Brunei International Airport (opening hours 9am - 5pm) and Kg. Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery (9am - 2pm). Visitors can obtain information about Brunei and related pamphlets and maps free from here. All centres are closed between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.

Buses There are six bus routes servicing the BSB area: the Central Line, Circle Line, Eastern Line, Southern Line, Western Line and Northern Line. Normal operating hours are from 6.30am - 6pm. Bus fares start from B$1.00. Buses heading to other towns in Brunei such as Tutong, Kuala Belait and Seria depart from the bus terminal located at the multistorey carpark on Jalan Cator in BSB. Taxis Taxis can be found at the airport, hotels, shopping centres, and the central bus station in Bandar Seri Begawan. There are no metered taxis in Brunei, therefore it is advisable to negotiate your fare before getting into one. For your convenience it is also recommended to take you preferred taxi driver’s number to organize prearranged trips. Water Taxis Unique to Brunei, the water taxi is the most common means of transportation in Kampong Ayer. You can hail a water taxi from the numerous jetties along the banks of Brunei River. The water taxi is an ideal way to view the water village up close. Fares are negotiable but usually a standard ride costs about B$1.00.
