AUGUST/ SEPTEMBER ISSUE
Wow, August is upon us! This year is flashing by. With all Shows and Events in full swing, life is pretty much back to normal, with many shows returning after a two year break. The cost of fuel has rocketed though, making it rather expensive to fill up our horseboxes to travel to these events; certainly a time to team up with friends and share lifts.

We will be publishing another ‘special issue’ in November, in which we will feature a round-up of 2022 summer shows. Show organisers, please email your report and photos by 10th October for inclusion. Likewise, we are also on the look-out for reader stories to go into this ‘special’ issue so please don’t be shy; if you’ve a story to tell, we would love to hear it and hopefully publish it. This issue, we introduce Michael Diamantides, who evented here in England before returning to live in Greece. Michael writes about the importance of the rider’s influence on the horse in his ‘Fit to Ride’ article, found on page 12. Ginny is in fine form this issue, with success on the eventing scene with her clients’, as well as her own horses. We have the second instalment in Sofia Games’ dressage activities, and Jo Monck visits Sophie Wallace and her beautiful Lusitanos. All in all, there is plenty to read in this August/September issue.

SPILLERS™ SUPPORT REDWINGS WITH WEIGHTY CAMPAIGN
R
edwings is saying a huge thank you to SPILLERS™ for their support as part of their most recent equine obesity campaign. The feed company is on a big mission this year; to help overweight horses get slimmer while adding weight to Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s funds. They have pledged to convert equine weight loss kilos into £££s, to raise £5,000 for the charity. SPILLERS is inviting horse owners to join the SPILLERS™ Slimmers’ Club, with the goal of members’ horses collectively losing 100,000kg. As the weight loss accumulates it will be converted to a financial donation of £5k to support Redwings’ vital equine welfare work, which includes rescuing horses from the risks of obesity. Lynn Cutress, Chief Executive of Redwings, said: “We are very grateful to SPILLERS™ for supporting us through this important campaign. “Redwings is a charity 100% funded by donations, and we could not do the work we do, caring for over 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules every day and rescuing hundreds more, without donations like this.” Being overweight can pose as much of a welfare risk as being underweight for horses, not only because of the direct weight-associated effects, but also due to the increased risks posed for certain clinical conditions, especially laminitis. Other health and welfare implications include increased joint strain, respiratory stress, heat intolerance, an increase in chronic low-grade inflammation in senior horses and reduced fertility. Nicola Jarvis, Head of Veterinary Services at Redwings, said: “Fat has long been regarded as just an innocent way to store excess calories, but we now know fat produces
chemicals that negatively affect our horse’s metabolism and health, as it does in humans. “By helping our horses safely reach an ideal body condition score we decrease their risk of laminitis and the agony and suffering this condition brings. At Redwings we empathise with the challenges of managing weight, especially in our Cobs, Welsh Ponies and Shetlands, but getting an honest opinion as to whether your horse is overweight is essential. Don’t wait for laminitis to strike before seeking advice.” The SPILLERS™ Slimmers’ Club was launched last summer to help address the problem of equine obesity in a positive way. Now, with more than 2,900 members, the motivating and friendly club provides practical support and camaraderie for owners of overweight horses and ponies, to aid them on their weight loss journey. It provides information and advice including weight loss tips, details of how to body condition score and
use a weigh tape, diet plans and weight loss records. Club members also receive access to a dedicated Facebook group where they can share their horse’s progress and tips with other owners, get inspired with success stories and post questions for SPILLERS™ nutritionists to answer. “Our mission for this campaign is threefold,” said SPILLERS™’ Product Manager Sarah Nelson. “We want to use our knowledge and expertise to help owners of overweight horses and ponies achieve safe, sustainable weight loss, to raise funds to support our favourite charity Redwings and to continue to raise awareness of the need to end equine obesity for good.” To sign-up to the SPILLERS™ Slimmers’ Club go to: https://www.facebook. com/groups/322710156018763 If you’d like to make a donation to Redwings please visit www.redwings. org.uk/donate or call 01508 505246.
EQUINE VETERINARY NURSING COURSES AT THE OPEN COLLEGE OF EQUINE STUDIES THE Open College of Equine Studies (TOCES) offers equine veterinary nurse training to UK and international students, leading to the award of the Lantra Awards Level 3 Work Based Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Equine).
T
he 2-year Level 3 Equine Veterinary Nursing programme works well for busy practices, as student veterinary nurses (SVNs) can continue in full time employment while completing their studies through blended learning. Weekly online study days are supported with attended study weeks held at TOCES’ purpose-built equine education centre near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The new facilities provide a high-quality teaching and learning environment for clinical skills and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) training. SVNs must be employed or undertake a placement, paid or unpaid, for a minimum of 15 hours per week within an approved RCVS Training Practice (TP). As an approved RCVS centre, TOCES can arrange the approval process for UK and overseas practices. Subject to meeting approval criteria, international veterinary practices can become TPs enabling overseas students to train for this

globally respected qualification which entitles the holder to enter the RCVS Register of Veterinary Nurses and thus use the post-nominals ‘RVN’. Veterinary practices may enrol their SVNs with TOCES if the practice is already a TP with another Primary Centre or they have other SVNs training with another college. TOCES’ veterinary nursing team consists of experienced SVN advisors, lecturers, and tutors, all of whom have either worked, or are still working, in the equine veterinary nursing profession. The combination of on-going tutor support, high-quality study materials, live remote teaching, pre-recorded webinars, and hands-on clinical skill and OSCE training at study weeks, has resulted in TOCES enjoying very high success rates, which have been commended by the RCVS. The SVNs’ clinical supervisors (formerly clinical coaches) are also supported to help throughout the completion of the SVNs’ nursing progress logs (NPLs).
The next start date for the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing is Monday 26 September 2022, with an induction study week September 26 to 28, followed by weekly online study days starting every Thursday from October 6. Enrolment includes membership of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA). To view the full range of courses offered by TOCES visit www.equinestudies.co.uk

The Shire Horse Society has revealed that its National Shire Horse Show will return to Newark in 2023 after a successful event at Newark Showground in March this year. The show, which is the world’s largest gathering of Shire horses, is believed to be one of the oldest, almost continuous horse shows in the world, having been held for the first time at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington, London, in 1878, when the charity was named the English Cart Horse Society. In 2022, it was held in Nottinghamshire for the first time and organisers have decided to return to the venue in 2023 – giving Shire horse enthusiasts the chance to compete in a range of different classes, and visitors the opportunity to see the gentle giants of the horse world in all their finery. The event will take place on 11th and 12th March 2023 and tickets will go on sale in early Autumn. The National Shire Horse Show is the flagship event of the Shire Horse Society, the only charity dedicated to the protection, promotion and improvement of the Shire horse. Only a few decades ago, the breed was in danger of dying out. It has experienced a resurgence in recent years, but it is still on the Rare Breed Survival Trust’s endangered breed list, with fewer than 300 pedigree Shire horse foals born in the UK every year. The show generally attracts competitors from across the UK and Europe, and visitors from around the world. Competitors take part in classes, showing their horses in-hand, in-harness and ridden. There are also stalls, activities and other entertainments to add to the event.orsHorse Victoria Clayton added: “We were made very welcome in Nottinghamshire in 2022 and we are looking forward to returning next year, even bigger and better. Shire horses are amazing animals and we are so grateful to all our supporters who help us to help this breed, which has played such a huge role in the history of Great Britain.” For more information about the Shire Horse Society and the show, visit www.shire-horse.org.uk

ALWAYS BE SEEN ountry & Stable are promoting the importance of wearing hi-visibility clothing when riding all the time, regardless of whether you ride on or off the road, the time of day or weather conditions. As horse riders we know horse riding is a high-risk sport so it is essential we do all we can to keep ourselves safe. Ensuring we are visible both on the road, as well as out hacking in fields or forests is vital. Being visible on the road can help to prevent road accidents, but also ensuring you’re visible in greener areas allows you not only to be seen in your surroundings but also visible from a height. This can aid in search and rescue if an accident
were to occur or for a pilot to adjust their flight path if needed to prevent spooking your horse.
HOW DOES HIGH VISIBILITY FABRIC WORK?
High-visibility clothing is made from fluorescent material and reflective strips. When artificial light or the sun’s ultraviolet rays hits the fabric, it reacts to create a glowing appearance. The combination of reflective strips is to aid visibility in times of poor and low light conditions. Illuminated light sources, such as cars or torches will cause the strips to glow.
Research shows that wearing hi-vis can give drivers an extra 3 second reaction time, which in
Fluorescent colours are used for hi-vis clothing because they react with the ultraviolet rays of the sun and appear to ‘glow’. They are exceptionally bright because of the way they absorb and emit

turn can reduce the chance of an accident. To put this into context, if a car is travelling at 30mph, an increase in a 3 second reaction time gives the driver an extra 40m of stopping distance, the length of a standard arena.
light. This ‘glowing’ of fluorescent colours is particularly effective in low light conditions; under tree cover, dusk, dawn and in misty or foggy weather. HOW TO BE SEEN IN THE DARK?
Although fluorescent clothing is ideal in daylight and low light it does not ‘glow’ in the dark as is often believed. To be seen in the dark you must wear clothing with retro-reflective bands. Retro-reflective tape reflects light back to its source with minimum scattering, meaning when the light from a car headlight hits the retro-reflective tape it is reflected to the driver.

Hi-visibility clothing is available in a variety of different colours to suit every taste. The most popular and traditional colour is yellow however, you can also purchase orange and pink. When selecting your hi-vis colours you should always take into consideration the time of year and your most common surroundings. The contrast of colours to a background can considerably impact whether you stand out or not. For
HIGHLIGHT MOVING PARTS
Research has shown our brains have the uncanny ability to recognise other human beings, this is called ‘sensitivity to biomotion’. An extremely good reason why you should highlight your bodies moving parts. A good recommendation for this is to wear a hat band to highlight the movement of your head or an arm band for when signalling. You can also highlight your horse’s moving parts using leg bands and a tail strap.
example, if you regularly ride past fields of rapeseed, yellow will not stand out as effectively as pink. Orange may blend into autumn leaves and hedge rows, so yellow or pink would be a better contrast in this instance. How about choosing a mixed rainbow of colours? This may not be quite so easy on the eye, but wearing a mix of hi-vis colours will create an eye-catching moving object, positively effecting your safety.

WEARING A RAINBOW OF HI-VIS
TIME TO REFLECT (EXCUSE THE PUN!)
to and something we would highly recommend.
The image below is startling and really brings the reality of wearing hi-vis into context. There are no laws to say that horse riders must wear hi-vis clothing when riding, but it is definitely in your best interests
We would love to see your hi-vis style and hear your thoughts on this subject… Tag us on Instagram @countryandstable and we may share your post.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR HIGH-VISIBILITY CLOTHING?
There is no set time to replace high-visibility safety clothing due to several varying factors, including the number of wash cycles or any damage to the fabric it may have incurred. It is important to regularly clean/wash high-visibility gear, as dirt can hinder its effectiveness. Make sure you follow washing instructions carefully to avoid damaging your products. After washing your hi-vis garments you should check it has retained its glowing qualities, it could save your life.

HELP!!! MY HORSE IS LAME, WHAT IS THE VET GOING TO DO?
By Claire Maher BVetMed MSc Cert AVP(ESO) MRCVS structures. Lunging is generally undertaken next, usually in an arena and then on some hard standing. If an arena surface or a suitable area of hard standing are not available you can lunge in a field, but ideally a flattish field. If the problem is subtle or only really perceptible during ridden work then the vet may ask to see the horse ridden. Some lameness causes performance problems but not overt lameness without a rider. Some back and pelvic problems result in ridden problems but not necessarily perceptible problems from the ground. Once a full assessment has been made the vet will be able to discuss the next steps with you. This will vary a lot depending on this initial assessment. Some horses may require nerve blocks to identify an area of pain, some will require x-rays or ultrasound to assess a specific structure. In most cases a combination of a thorough clinical examination, nerve blocks and imaging is required to reach a diagnosis. Nerve and joint blocks involve injecting small amounts of local anaesthetic into areas of potential pain to see if numbing the area alleviates the clinical signs. If the horse has an obvious lameness, we are looking for a horse to go sound when the area of pain is blocked. If the horse has more subtle issues, then we
Palpating the lumbar spine
I
f your horse is lame, or just under performing in any way, a veterinary assessment is the best place to start, but what will the vet actually do? First the vet will get a full history from you. The vet will ask what problems you have been having, how long you have had the horse, how long the horse has had the problem, if there have been any major changes in work load, management etc. All of these answers will help the vet locate the issue and direct the next steps in the investigation. A full static assessment will follow the history taking. This means the vet will carefully palpate and examine all the horses externally accessible joints, tendons and ligaments. As well as carefully palpating the neck and back, and assess flexibility through the neck, back, lumbosacral joint and sacroiliac joint. Assessment of foot balance and shoeing is also made. Next the horse will be walked and trotted in hand. In an ideal world, this will take place on a long, flat section of hard standing. The vet may then do flexion tests, whereby a limb is picked and certain joints flexed. The idea of a flexion test is not to make the horse lame, it is merely to exacerbate underlying problems by putting a small amount of stress on the flexed

are looking for the horse to improve, for example, horses with back pain are often reluctant to go forwards and work over their back, once the back is blocked we would expect an improvement in these things. Most of the time x-rays and ultrasound imaging are performed once we have a specific area to target. For example, if a horse is lame and improves following nerve blocks to the fetlock region, we could then x-ray the fetlock and ultrasound the tendons and ligaments surrounding the fetlock. Once a diagnosis has been made treatment options can be discussed, these also vary widely depending on the nature of the problem and the area affected. Rest assured that there are usually a wide variety of options available to suit all horses and budgets. If your horse is lame, or ‘not quite right’, or has a sore back or any other issue that is worrying you, get a veterinary assessment. A lot of information can be gathered via a thorough history and examination; which can guide you and your vet to then take the appropriate next steps for your horse.

A FIT & BALANCED HORSE REQUIRES A FIT & BALANCED RIDER By Michael Diamantides

orse and rider, like a musician with their instrument. The rider with his technique and feel needs to finely tune their horse so that they may find their harmony together. We spend hours on our horse’s fitness and training, but have you ever thought that your own fitness is just as important if not more so. If you think of all the variety of exercises we have to train and strengthen a horse, it is only logical that a rider should follow a similar regime. A horse requires the correct muscle development across its topline, from the hindquarters all the way to its poll, strong shoulders and chest, in order to be able to carry itself in balance and perform all the different tasks we ask of it, from demanding dressage movements, jump

FIT TO RIDE over fences with the correct technique, or maintain its composure balance over a cross country or endurance race. To achieve all the above the most important factor and connecting link is the rider. We have to simulate the creation of energy and then direct and control this energy flow, that has to circulate seamlessly between several key points. It’s the classic physics law of action and reaction. This energy flow process can be broken down as follows: 1. Initial Stimulation of energy in the horse’s hindquarters by applying pressure on the horse at the points of contact between our legs. Depending on the level of horses training and responsiveness, this can be as subtle as a virtually invisible propelling motion from our hips and pelvic floor to more purposeful pressure from the groin muscle, inner thighs calf muscles and finally heel as a last resort which may also carry a spur on the end of it. 2. This spark of energy flows like electricity from the horse’s hoof as it strikes and pushes off the ground and travels up through the hock, to the hind quarters, up along the topline and the spinal column. It passes under the rider’s seat and saddle, up along the neck to the joint of the poll, down behind the jaw, and finally to the mouth. It hits the bit and returns back up the reins to the rider’s hands,
arms, elbows shoulders down through their spine to their seat. Here one has to rebound that energy back up from between their legs ,activating the horse’s abdomen, and pushing the energy back up the rider’s body, down their arms and along the reins to the bit. Thus creating a containment of that energy that will also activate the chest, shoulder and lower part of the neck. This triggers simultaneously a new spark of energy, which along with the containment of the first one, triggers the hind quarters to step under further with more purpose; each time repeating thi whole process and energy flow, over and over again, as the rider tries to attain the maximum possible balanced energy and action. 3. In the above process the most common enemies that usually disrupt or block this energy flow are a lack of coordination and balance, paired with points of stiffness and weakness along this chain either somewhere in the horse’s or rider’s body or usually both. 4. Horse riding is a circular chain of events resulting from inputs, actions and reactions, where any deviance at any point effects the next result. These deviances are inevitable due to internal and external factors because neither we nor the horse are robots nor does our environment come out of a computer game. The more feel a rider has to
sense and even foresee these deviances and thus use their balance, strength and flexibility to correctly control the energy flow in order to manipulate the horse’s body and movement in the most fluid and harmonious way, where nothing looks forced. 5. Essentially, I like to look as if I’m harnessing this energy, sealing all the wrong exits, allowing it to flow freely within the constraints I have set, leaving the horse no choice but to go with the flow, taking the lead or the contact if you like and I just have to follow. 6. It sounds complicated but if you try to visualize and feel it in your mind, it becomes simpler and immediately highlights the areas one most focus on in training yourself as much as the horse. 7. Apart from obvious aerobic fitness, key areas of their body a rider must focus on, to achieve both strength and flexibility, are abs, upper and lower back, shoulders, adductors and abductors, hips, glutes, knees, calves and ankles. This will allow us to work on and improve our balance on top of the horse, a prerequisite to consistent correct riding. 8. The result of the above leads to a healthier and happier horse and rider. The causes that can throw rider and horse off balance have been minimised.

FOCUS ON SUMMER HEALTH
SUMMER SKIN SUPPORT I
t is great to see our horses enjoying the warmer weather, but we must ensure that we do everything we can to protect them from summer coat and skin issues such as sunburn and insect bite hypersensitivity. If your horse suffers from insect bite hypersensitivity, limit his exposure to insects as much as possible by using a fly rug and mask, avoiding turnout at dusk and dawn, making sure he doesn’t graze near water sources such as bogs or streams, use exposed paddocks without hedging or trees and remove droppings from the paddock daily. Correct nutrition and hydration are essential for coat and skin health; make sure you speak to an equine nutritionist and your vet if you have any concerns about your feeding regime or horse’s health. Nutrition is perhaps the most important part of skin and coat health, as certain nutrients are the building blocks of skin and hair. Certain minerals such as zinc, copper, fatty acids, and biotin are crucial, so if your horse has a forage only diet adding a vitamin and mineral supplement may be necessary. If you are feeding a complete feed make sure you use the recommended amounts. The Golden Paste Company launched TurmerItch™, a pelleted supplement specifically formulated to support a healthy skin and coat. The carefully selected ingredients are soothing to reduce itching, promote hair regrowth

and help to repel biting insects, as well as keeping the skin healthy and the coat shiny. Insect Bite Hypersensitivity usually affects most horses from March until October but starting the ‘midge season’ primed is important for the best possible advantage before they strike. This is why it is recommended
to feed TurmerItch all year round. By “priming” the body to be less responsive to allergens generally, subsequent seasonal rises in insects should be less of a problem; the skin of the horse will have a barrier of bioactives that have been shown to act as a repellent, neem for example, and be less responsive to bites. By introducing this dietary system that can help optimise digestive health, the microbiome and gut integrity, the allergenic contribution to the itch threshold is reduced; subsequent challenges from biting insects may then fall below the threshold, thus reducing scratching and damage to the coat and skin. Where can I find out more? Visit goldenpastecompany.com and follow @thegoldenpastecompany on Facebook and Instagram. TurmerItch™ RRP £44.99 (NEW 1.5kg tub size), RRP £59.99 (2kg tub)

FOCUS ON SUMMER HEALTH
Horses evolved to graze at ground level on an almost continuous basis, and it’s well known that restricting this natural behaviour can result in various health and behavioural issues. However, the reality is that it’s not always possible to provide 24/7 access to grazing. Eazigrazer hay feeder is the ideal alternative, simulating the natural grazing behaviour that is essential to your horse’s wellbeing. So simple and easy to use, the investment won’t only improve life for your horse. Eazigrazer will also save you time, effort and money, giving you the freedom to enjoy more time with your happy and healthy companion! www.eazigrazer.co.uk

BUSINESS PERSON IN THE SPOTLIGHT
BUSINES S PERSON IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Maria Wynne catches up with Simon Middleton, Managing Director of Zebra Products.
S
imon Middleton is a silver fox, and has been for decades, despite his relatively young age. He cuts a physically diminutive figure, but don’t let that fool you. He is a force of nature, but one of the most charming, self-effacing, thoughtful, considerate, respected and amusing individuals on the Equestrian Trade circuit. As the Managing Director of Flintshire based Zebra Products, he has created an empire that is responsible in the UK for the nationwide distribution of fifteen premier European brands. His own personal experiences of Equestrianism, and in particular the

discipline of Eventing have stood him in good stead, enabling him to recognise quality and class in the brands he selects to distribute. He has seen the sport from both sides of the fence. Sometimes on top of the fence, occasionally through the fence, and on one particularly harrowing occasion from underneath the fence. That was during a XC schooling session with Chris Bartle that did not go exactly according to plan. Needless to say, Simon is all too aware of the safety measures required for the sport. He would not be here with us now if he was not. Representing multiple brands equates to there being a wide remit for the athletes that he chooses to work with. From the disciplines of Showjumping, Dressage and Eventing each sport has
its own style and fashion criteria. So, what does he look for when recruiting a Brand Ambassador? Simon kindly agreed to shed some light on how his choices are driven. Readers that are considering looking for sponsorship should consider his answers and tailor their potential proposals accordingly. The overall impression is that you need to get busy on social media, and engage, engage, engage. Q. How many proposals do you field on average per month? A. Two or three a week. Q. What do you look for in a rider? Is it their competition record? Social media? Likeability?
For the latest news visit www.centralhorsenews.co.uk
BUSINESS PERSON IN THE SPOTLIGHT A. In the past our choice was purely result driven. Nowadays a rider’s social following is a hugely influential factor.
positively and frequently as possible in the best way. And provide feedback, be it negative or positive.
Q. At the risk of being politically incorrect do you consider the ‘poster girl/boy’ element? (We all do, let’s be fair!) A. In all honesty this certainly helps when it comes down to clothing, boots and helmet sponsorship deals.
Q. What do riders need to consider before approaching you? A. Why should we sign them up? What can they add to our team? Q. What has been the most bonkers request you’ve received? A. Too many crazy ones to mention. I think you should ask Maisie this question. She fields the requests! Maisie’s response was “The most ridiculous one we’ve had recently was from a Pony Club Mum whose daughter had just started riding. She wanted the pony kitting out from head to hoof!” It was a “No”.
Q. How often do you review a sponsorship? A. Ordinarily annually. Q. On what basis? A. We always try to keep the riders we have. Many have been on our books for a very long time. Each year we discuss if there is anyone that we would like to add into the Zebra Herd. (Note: A herd of Zebras is actually called a ‘Dazzle’). Q. How and on what basis do you calculate the value that a rider brings to the associated brand? A. We look at their social media posts and their competition results. And any added extras that they bring to the Zebra herd. Q. What do you ask for in return for support and how is this measured? A. We ask that they use the products they have been sponsored with, and of course to promote them as
Q. Who has been your most lucrative sponsored rider and why? Was it humour? An unusual approach? Competition Results? A. I met Charlotte Dujardin about fifteen years ago and signed her up instantly. I knew she would be a huge star! Q. There are always ‘obvious’ choices, well-known names. Boring. So how do you choose the up and coming and what time span do you look at? A. We like to work with riders from ponies upwards. We signed up Tabitha Kyle some time ago who is now absolutely flying on horses as well as ponies.
Q. What sponsorship packages do you supply and how do you grade them? A. The packages are tailored to each individual rider based on their performance and social following. Q. How much communication do you expect from the rider? A. Feedback is great. We like to hear from riders if they have been given a new product to test, or if they have any concerns about features of a product too. Without criticism nothing can improve. And no new products would be created. Q. What would cause you to cancel a sponsorship? A. If the rider did anything that would potentially damage the credibility of the brand. Q. There have been cases in the past where social media has made and forced choices onto sponsors. With the pack mentality of keyboard warriors, many of whom have probably never sat on a horse. How much heed do you pay to them? To what extent do you stick to your own personal beliefs in that scenario? A. We judge each case individually. Time spent with Simon was particularly illuminating and will surely benefit you, the readers! www.zebraproducts.co.uk

SOFIA GAMES
THE GAMES ARE OFF TO POLAND By Maria Wynne
“I
t’s taken years of hard work to get that little yellow piece of felt and the badge, but it’s been worth it. It’s all we’ve ever wanted for her.” And that is how Jo-Jo (we still don’t use the ‘G’ word) summed up the exhausting last couple of months for Team Games. The final run up to selection has continued apace since the last Diary entry, with a cross channel trip to Le Mans CDIOP for the Nations Cup. Totti (Next Black Magic) travelled well throughout the long journey, and arrived in exuberant form. He displayed his glee at being on French soil by kicking out at the display plant pots of petunias and primulas as he was doing his trot-up. Thankfully he regained his composure before the serious business of representing Team GBR started. Jo-Jo was less exuberant by the end of her journey, finding herself waiting two hours for a taxi, and then having to pay an extortionate £50.00 for a 5 mile journey to her hotel. Which had a tram system directly outside. Even the double glazing could not mute the noise. It was a less than restful stay for the matriarch of Team Games, who then decided to decamp to the more salubrious Le Mans Chateaux which was a mere two fields away from the competition. Far preferable. Sofia and Totti’s first individual test scored a 69.02 from the five attendant judges, making her the second highest placed of the Team GBR riders and left her in fifth place overall. A pleasing warm up for the Team Test the next day when all the team members rode their hearts out to achieve second place. It was Sofia’s first experience of standing on an International podium, heady stuff indeed. Personally, I don’t think it will be her last. The next stop was Compiegne Prix Ponies CDI, another trip across the channel. Even the ponies are developing a slight inflection ‘au francais’ to their whinnying. Upon arrival Team Games was welcomed by torrential rain, thundercracks, and lightning which left everyone contemplating the use of armbands and wondering if the FEI had any specific rulings with regards to the legalities of these as ‘aids’. Eventually the sun did deign to appear, but Sofia and Totti still had to splash their way through the subsequent standing water, managing to score 69.1 in the Team Test and 6th place. Compiegne was an exercise in building experience and fortitude and invaluable in preparing Sofia for the vagaries of International Competition. With the Europeans in Poland creeping closer,

and the added pressure of looming exams Sofia is having to micro-manage every moment of her time. Astonishingly she took all three ponies, Totti, Snowpo, and Cadillac to the Pony Team Test at the Selectors Observation Trial at
Somerford Park. The first time this has been done. Theoretically she could make up 75% of the Team GBR Pony Dressage Squad. Sofia’s results were astounding. To be able to ride three very different ponies to scores of

approximately 70% certainly attracted attention and garnered much praise. Totti won with a score of 71.62%, and a delighted Sofia exclaimed “He’s never given me THAT feeling before”. The experience gained at Le Mans and Compiegne, and the deepening trust and understanding between them is becoming evident, and the upward curve steeper. Cadillac’s expressive test produced a mark a fraction below 70% for sixth place, and then poor Mister Snowman had to endure the attentions of a pesky pigeon during his shoulder-in and a slight pilot error. Despite this he still scored 68.48%. Such consistency in riding three such very different ponies, reveals the depth of skill that Sofia is developing as a horsewoman, not just a rider. The final stop in the quest for Team selection
was Wellington CDI with two ponies Totti and Snowpo. And in the interim Sofia was revising solidly for her upcoming exams, three per day in the week immediately before Wellington. Enormous pressure from every angle, requiring great fortitude and determination. Personally, I am beginning to wonder if Sofia is genuinely a human being or a super-power. We do need a new Prime Minister, and after the last few efforts I do think Sofia would be a bankable choice. European Championship qualifications stipulate a score of 70% plus and ideally Sofia was to achieve this on both ponies. And she did! A double first with Totti in both the Individual with 70.90% and the Team with 70.95%. She was also third on Snowpo who should have been second, had he not lost valuable marks

during one movement thanks to an errant loose child wildly flapping their jacket when they were cantering down the long side. As Jo-Jo wryly commented “I’d make it a strait jacket.” There were tears of joy when Sofia’s first ever National Anthem was played. And the icing on the cake? It was her fourteenth birthday. Team Games are now officially on their way to Poland for the European Championships representing Team GBR. The adventures will be recounted here in our next Diary.

ust outside Stroud, in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside, there are some beautiful Lusitanos owned by a very talented young lady. At the age of just fifteen, Sophie Wallace is without doubt the youngest Lusitano breeder in the United Kingdom. In fact, quite apart from breeding Lusitanos at such a young age, her riding career to date alone is impressive. Having previously competed showjumping to International 3* level, including being picked to represent GB at a Nations Cup, Sophie started competing dressage with BD last year on her four-year-old Lusitano Stallion (Rubi AR x Vampe). She soon qualified for the BD Elite Equine Associated Championship, being the youngest rider on the youngest horse, which she went on to win with over 71%. Sophie then came 3rd in the BD Regional Winter Championship, and qualified for the National Winter Championships held at Hartpury at Easter in the prelim silver section where she came a very respectful 8th, again on the youngest horse. Sophie also competes a 16yr old Westphalian Mare (Rosalie B), owned by Olympic gold medallist Laura Tomlinson and Mrs U Bechtolsheimer. Laura kindly gave Sophie the ride on her former International Grand Prix

horse last November. Since then, the new partnership has gained scores to be selected to compete internationally and were long listed for a place on the GB Junior Team for the European Championships at Hartpury in July. They also represented Team GB in a Junior Nations Cup at Le Mans in May, where Sophie was the highest scoring GB rider on the team in the Nations Cup. Sophie is trained by both Laura and Carl Cuypers, and trains with them five times a week. This huge degree of dedication and focus will, I’m certain, see Sophie rising very fast in the dressage world and may well see her meet her goal of being selected for the Junior Europeans come this July.
Sophie’s family lived in the Algarve where Sophie was born, and for the first part of her life, it was here that she started riding at the age of seven. She bypassed ponies, being put straight on to a 15.2 three-year-old Lusitano, and so her riding career began. Training under Mestre Jose Cabrita in Albufeira, Portugal, she was able to gain invaluable experience riding lots of different horses, with the emphasis being on classical dressage, competing at the equivalent of prelim level still under the age of eleven. The family moved from Portugal to England full-time in 2018, where Sophie started successfully jumping ponies and horses. Having already bought two purebred Lusitano broodmares Formosa (Peralta Pinha

x Xaquema do Pinheiro) and Ironia (Napoleão x Zita), the decision to buy her stallion Nadal was made in 2020. His sire is the Olympic dressage horse Rubi AR, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in Portugal on my first trip out there; a more beautiful horse you couldn’t hope to see. His son is certainly the image of him, with a sweet temperament and one who takes everything in his perfect stride. A stunning stallion to add to the stud. Nadal was the second highest graded stallion at the Breed show in 2021, with a score of 72,01. Ironia, one of Sophie’s broodmares, was the second highest graded mare with a score of 74,25. The decision to breed Luso’s was taken because Sophie has quite simply been around them all her life “They are really quite special and stand out from everything else’ she told me, which I’m sure every Luso owner will certainly agree with.” The Broodmares were picked for their amazing calm temperament, conformation, paces and bloodlines; one being a more traditional Luso mare bred for bullfighting, and the other bred for sport along more modern lines. The result being, two very special purebred foals by Nadal born this year. With living a life outside, and foaling outside, it is as close to their natural habitat as can be achieved; they are extremely happy and very relaxed, with the foals interested in everything particularly the camera! Sophie is a natural horse woman, and this is very apparent in the way the horses just want to be with her the moment she enters the field. I think that the SW brand is going to be one to watch in the future.

The first half of the season is all about preparing the horses for their main international run, this is important to achieve qualification for the next level and/ Or consolidate at that level. Having already made a couple of trips to the Norfolk area in April, we headed back to Houghton Hall. I had three rides myself: • Ballinamurra Changsha, Owned by Pippa Lines. Making her debut at international level, In the 2* Long. • Sixmilewater, 8-year-old Owned by Nicky Bennell was making the all-important step up from Intermediate to International 3 * Long, and his 2nd 3-day event.

• CHF Archie,9yo Owned by Jane BlakesleyGrimes competing in his 2nd 4* Short. Not only was I kept busy with three dressage tests to learn, three very different XC courses to walk, but also having two of my clients competing in the International 2* Long. It was lovely to have everyone there, giving the feeling of a huge team effort. Sixmilewater, did a great test and although he made a mistake in his simple change, he scored well in the other movements. He embraced the atmosphere, and it forecasts much excitement for the marks he will be able to get in the future, which will no doubt see him sat in the top few once he is more established and stronger in his body. The XC on Saturday asked plenty of questions in the 3* and caused plenty of discussion
between riders. Some tricky lines and distances that asked us as riders to make a decision on the route we were taking. A Bold water, with lots going on in the background, for the less experienced horse caused plenty of distraction resulting in faults and uncomfortable jumps. Buster did his thing however, working with me all the way around and made light work of the whole course. He galloped, jumped and remained focused all the way round to come home clear, and inside the time. I was absolutely delighted. Sunday show jumping, and it was as if Buster had not galloped and jumped for over 10 minutes. He came out feeling fresh and very happy. The pressure was on to jump a clear, with the scores incredibly tight at the top. Just one pole could drop us many placings. Going into the ring, I knew I was sat on a good jumper,

but this being our first long format together, I was not sure how he would feel the day after XC. He jumped so well and so careful, feeling brilliant all the way round the challenging SJ track, jumping a perfect clear. I honestly could not have asked for more, a huge climb up the order after an immaculate double clear! And, gaining one of those important qualifications needed for the next level in the future! CHF Archie, had been working very well on the flat in the lead up to Houghton. He is becoming more and more established at the new moves needed for 4* level, particularly his flying changes, something that in the past he has found tricky. He worked in really well but sadly on entering the arena, white boards tension crept In, meaning we didn’t score the marks he is capable of and missed our changes in the ring. As they say, it is all ring practice and I know it will all come together, and he will be capable of a very smart test. Due to being the short format, he had show jumping to follow. There were few clear rounds inside the time, so I knew he had to be careful and quick. He did just that, loving the crowds and giving every fence air; he jumped the most perfect clear. The XC was a typical 4* track. There were plenty of questions all the way around, and once again a very strong water combination. A huge brush log into a turning skinny brush in the water, followed by another skinny brush up a slope on the way out. There was no room for error and if you did not get the jump in that you wanted, you had to work particularly hard to make the distance, and accuracy to jump the B and C elements. Due to this you were offered a black flag alternative, but this was not needed for us. Archie jumped in like a professional, the distance came up easy and he knew the only route to go was through the

flags! He stormed around the whole course and gave me the best ride. He jumps for fun, and loves his job, and really does have endless amounts of scope for 5* in the not-too-distant future. Another all-important qualification added to his CV after a great double clear! It was a really special milestone for both of these two horses; I think so much of them. They have wonderful owners that are so supportive and I came away thinking
how 5* is most definately on the cards for both of them in the future! #RoadTo5*. It takes a huge team effort, supportive owners, wonderful horses and time to get them to this level. Taking time to build the partnership, which I am aware of with Sixmilewater, especially as we are still a relatively new combination. What we have done to date has been amazing but the best is yet to come. CHF Archie, I have produced myself since he was a 6-year-old, off the hunting field and in three years what he has achieved is what dreams are made of. These two boys are so exciting! My two clients competing in the 2*L also had a great week, both Zoe and Emma did their personal best dressage scores, had two great runs around the XC on their horses, and came out on the Sunday to jump well over the coloured poles. Both gaining so much experience from the trip to Norfolk that will stand them in a good place for the remainder of the season, where they can consolidate at this level. So much of eventing is about mileage and experience, taking away the positives and knowing what you need to work on. I was so proud to call myself their trainer for the week; they both rode brilliantly and embraced the challenges set. Fast forward from Houghton two weeks, another stay away for me. This time to Bramham, Yorkshire. Also known as “One of the Big B’s”, CHF Archie is becoming quite familiar at 4* tracks, competing in the 4* short, gaining that valuable mileage. Bramham is known for the hills and a big bold XC; Archie felt ready, and he certainly was! A brilliant dressage scoring his personal best, nailing his changes and feeling even more grown up from even two weeks before. I was so happy and proud of him, in a hugely atmospheric arena, he worked with me every step of the way. On to the show jumping, which was causing many problems, not only the poles were falling but an incredibly tight time. A thorough course walking, choosing the tightest lines to avoid penalty on the time aspect. Archie jumped very well; we turned tight to fence 2, but sadly it fell, jumping towards the crowd and

the combination of the two meant there was little room for error. Nevertheless, jumping the remainder of the course beautifully, having learned from the mistake with no more faults to be added. A couple of seconds over on the time, but I was very happy with his round especially after looking at the problems and faults in the class. Once again, another step up in atmosphere and more experience under his belt. The Cross Country. What can I say? It did not disappoint! A true Ian Stark course that was big, bold, and fair. It was so refreshing to come to this amazing parkland to gallop and jump with your trusted partner. Huge amounts of problems throughout the day, leading to a long delay in my start time by 1hour 30mins. It’s very hard to keep yourself focused for such a long time, with mixed emotions of excitement and nerves running through your body. Hearing of all the problems, but I had my plan, and that was what I was going to stick too! We finally left the start box, into the zone! A little steady at the start, which I’m kicking myself about, but cruising over every fence and combination as if he had seen it all before. This was the biggest track he will have seen, and yet still made it feel like pony club. We never missed a beat the whole way round and beaming over the finish line with our super clear! With the big boys doing their thing, the younger generation being CHF Captain Jacob, a lovely 5-year-old in his first season eventing, also owned by Jane, the owner of Archie. Arlo has taken to eventing so well; he loves his job and has the most amazing attitude towards his work. I just know he has an exciting future, and I cannot wait for his journey to continue and see where it takes us. He has jumped a number of great double clears at BE100

level including top 10 placings. Most recently at Nunney Horse Trials, competing in the 5-yearold class he did a sweet test for 32 followed by a bold D/C. It makes me wonder…. In three years’ time will we be Blenheim bound in the age class as an 8-year-old… I think YES! With a smaller string of event horses this year, I have been able to also focus and help my clients I teach. Giving me so much reward and making me proud, competing at all levels they have achieved great things. Setting their goals and enjoying the journey, with ups and downs all the way, but let’s face it, it wouldn’t be eventing or horses if that was not the case. They pick themselves up and come back stronger. Due to some recent sales and change in circumstances it does mean I can offer a limited number of spaces for horses and their owners to be based with me on competition livery or training. So if this is something you would like help with, or think you have a young horse that has untapped potential then do get in touch. As I said, a lot has been happening over the past few months, including the two latest arrivals... Bertie and Betty! My two foals for this year, sired by my own 4-year-old stallion, Chanuck Z. Slightly biased, but wow they are cute… I will let you decide by looking at their photos! Wonder what their futures will hold; they certainly have all the right attributes at a couple of months old! A huge Thank you to the amazing team at VT Vets, for helping me with my breeding project, Helen Van Tull has been my amazing breeding vet for the last 10 years and we really have produced some lovely homebreds, each and every one particularly special. My aim in to produce quality sports horses that can jump and move, but most importantly have the most amazing

temperaments. It’s certainly a long process but having had my 15th foal this season, I get just as excited as I did for the first one! I hope you enjoy looking at some of the great photos in this article, which is all thanks to my wonderful horses, their owners and the professional photographers for capturing these memories of us out and about!

FOCUS ON SADDLING
In this issue Society of Master Saddlers’ Kay Hastilow Master Saddler, Master Saddle Fitter. provides advice on Saddle Fitting. Kay trained as a bench saddler with Bliss and Co, London in the late 1960s. Having set up her own manufacturing and retailing business in the 1970s she became increasingly interested in the effect that the fit of the saddle had on her own showjumping horses and, from the late 70s onwards concentrated her efforts on saddle fitting. In 1995 the Society of Master Saddlers set up their course and qualification for saddle fitting and Kay taught on this course from then until 2021, for most of this time as lead lecturer. Now semi- retired she still lectures and teaches in various countries and when not doing this spends most of her time at her home in Scotland with her horses and playing golf.
Q A
uestion: What should I expect from my saddle fitting appointment? Is there anything I need to do to prepare my horse? nswer: There are two types of saddle fitting appointments – to buy a ‘new’ saddle or to check your existing saddle. For simplicity I will cover the former, buying a saddle. For the saddle fitter we would like the horse to be inside, or at least under cover, clean and dry. He should be used to being handled, and to strangers coming to him. Good manners make things much easier with a fitting. You should have a bridle, stirrups, leathers, assorted sizes of girths and a saddle cloth, ideally not too thick, to hand. You will need to have hat and boots and
body protector if you use one ready so that you can ride, and there should be a safe, enclosed area (a secure field is fine) to ride in. If the saddle is for jumping it is advisable to have a couple of jumps in place ready. The fitter might have taken details before your visit, but they will need to know height, age, sex, colour and breed type of your horse. How long he has been in your ownership, what fitness level he is at and what your aims and ambitions are with him. Has he or you had any old injuries that might affect his / your way of going. Likewise recent injuries. The fitter will take a description, look at his conformation as regards saddle fitting and check for areas of asymmetry, discomfort or sores, noting anything that might be relevant. They should ask to see the horse walk and trot on hand to see if the way he moves might influence the saddle fit. They should discuss your requirements and what might be suitable for both you and your horse. It may be that you want a specific brand or style of saddle, but the fitter thinks this an unsuitable choice for you both, explaining why and advising something similar but not what you asked for. This isn’t a sales pitch – if we know that your choice will lead to problems, we will usually walk away rather than sell an unsuitable saddle. The welfare of the horse is the uppermost for us at all times. Having tried suitable saddles and selected 2 or 3 to try, each will be girthed up with irons and leathers fitted and a saddle cloth beneath the saddle. You will be invited to mount and try each saddle at walk, trot, and canter if you are happy to do so, and jump if that
is a requirement for the saddle. If you or your horse obviously dislike the saddle, you will be asked to stop and try others. Be aware that a saddle must be seen ridden in by you on the horse in question to confirm a good fit. No one can say that a saddle fits without this! Having decided on the saddle that you want, any alterations or changes that you require will be discussed and then you get down to the nitty gritty of cost, payment, delivery (if having a similar saddle to that tried made) and paperwork. A record of the visit, templates and measurements should be taken, and the fitting form shared with you. Terms and conditions, the right to cancel contract and other relevant paperwork should be dealt with. A saddle made specifically for you MUST be ridden in on the horse before the sale is complete and follow up visits to check the fit should be discussed. This is a brief overview of what to expect but you can see that it is thorough and takes time, so please allow up to a couple of hours - you cannot fit this in during your lunch hour!
