HIGHWAY CODE CHANGES FOR EQUESTRIANS COME AT CRUCIAL TIME WITH MORE HORSE DEATHS ON UK ROADS IN 2022

T

he British Horse Society (BHS) welcomes the new proposed Highway Code changes, following reports of four horses killed on Britain’s roads already this year. This follows 46 equine deaths reported to the charity in the previous year, with an additional 118 being injured and 130 human injuries. The equine charity is delighted to see the positive changes being implemented, many of which were a direct result of the BHS’s significant involvement in the Highway Code review’s stakeholder group for vulnerable road users. The changes, due to come into effect on 29 January will help to keep horses, riders, handlers and carriage drivers safer on UK roads. The BHS has worked hard over the last three years, lobbying and collaborating with Cycling UK, DVSA, Living Streets and the Department for Transport (DfT) to suggest the much-needed Highway Code improvements and to represent equestrians in the review. One of the main changes is a new Hierarchy of Road Users, where horses are now alongside pedestrians and cyclists, as vulnerable road users. This new rule highlights that, irrespective of method of transport, those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to others. The advisory speed at which to pass people riding horses or driving horse-drawn vehicles has been reduced from 15mph to 10mph, and drivers must allow at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) of space. The BHS’s Dead Slow messaging will now be incorporated within the Highway Code, including how to pass feral/semi feral horses on Exmoor/Dartmoor and New Forest, as well as a recommendation for horse riders to complete the BHS Ride Safe

Award as a reference of best practise. While these changes are a step in the right direction to protect horses and riders, there is still much more to be done to prevent the hundreds of horse and rider injuries, and even horse fatalities, reported to the BHS each year. The BHS is committed to educating drivers and creating awareness about how to safely pass horses on the roads, through their Dead Slow campaign. Dead Slow was launched to help better educate drivers on how to safely pass horses on the road. The campaign consists of four key behavioural change messages to drivers: If I see a horse on the road then I will … 1. Slow down to a maximum of 10mph 2. Be patient – I will not sound my

horn or rev my engine 3. Pass the horse wide and slow, (if safe to do so) at least a car’s width if possible 4. Drive slowly away The charity is urging equestrians to report any incidents they experience on the roads using the BHS's "Horse i" app, which gathers data to help strengthen the BHS’s voice when implementing positive changes such as this one. For more information about the upcoming changes ahead of 29th January, please visit: https://www. gov.uk/government/news/the-highway-code-8changes-you-need-to-know-from-29-january-2022 To find out more about the Dead Slow campaign and Horse i app, please visit: www.bhs.org.uk/dead-slow

REDWINGS FILM ANNOUNCED AS FINALIST IN CHARITY FILM AWARDS REDWINGS FILM ABOUT MUCH-MISSED HORSE BOO, NARRATED BY STEPHEN FRY AND PRODUCED BY NORFOLK COMPANY, IS ANNOUNCED AS FINALIST IN CHARITY FILM AWARDS

A

n animated film that tells the story of one of Redwings’ most beloved horses who passed away just before Christmas is in the running for a prestigious Charity Film Award. ‘A Second Chance for Boo’ tells the tale of how the blind Clydesdale came into the care of Redwings having lost the sight in one eye to cancer and being cruelly shot in the other. After this terrible incident, his owners reached out to Redwings and asked for the charity’s help and, after gently and carefully earning his trust, Boo went on to live a happy life with his horse and human friends at our Hapton headquarters for 12 years. Very sadly Boo, who was 24, had to be put to sleep just before Christmas when it no longer became possible to manage lameness issues alongside the arthritis in his legs. Lynn Cutress, Chief Executive of Redwings, said: “We loved Boo so much here at Redwings, and we know our supporters did too. “To find out that our film about Boo, which was made back in 2020 to help raise funds, has been shortlisted for a Charity Film

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

Award seems quite poetic, just a few weeks after we had to say goodbye to him. “Thank you so much to everyone who voted.” The film was narrated by Norfolk-born actor and writer Stephen Fry and produced by Norwich-based company Immersive Studios. Niky Ellison, Marketing Manager of Immersive Studios, said: “It was a genuine pleasure to work with the team at Redwings to bring Boo’s story to the people, working with such a wonderful charity and one so close to home was a real highlight for us. Using animation allowed us to give Boo’s story the gravity it needed without showing the grim reality of some of the details. That, twinned with Stephen Fry’s narration, makes for a really wonderful film that shows just how much good the team at Redwings do.” The awards celebrate the use of film by the third sector to change mindsets and raise awareness of good causes and the work they do. They are organised by Smiley Movement CIC, the non-profit organisation for social and environmental good that is sponsored by the original Smiley™ brand

and aims to drive positive change in the world. The final films will now be judged by a panel of experts before the winners are announced at an event in London in March.

BRITISH DRESSAGE PARTNERS WITH BLACK HORSE ONE TO REVITALISE THE WAY JUDGES LEARN

B

ritish Dressage (BD) has unveiled a new partnership with the market leader in dressage scoring software Black Horse One (BHO), which will revolutionise how British judges develop and learn. German-based BHO founded the paperless judging solution eDressage™ and are also well known for their Spectator Judging® and Degree of Difficulty platforms. This collaboration with BD is the first of its kind with a focus on judge development. BHO and BD worked together throughout 2021 to deliver digital seminars to British judges and facilitate judge examinations online when Covid prohibited face to face interaction. BD official partner BHO has worked with BD to develop an innovative digital platform that enables all BD listed and trainee judges to virtually score a test using digital test sheets while watching a test video. The comments and scores can instantly then be gauged against a range of senior master judges, all from their own device – anytime, anywhere. Each judge will have their own personalised dashboard on the platform that acts as their ‘portfolio’ where their tests can be reviewed, which will be an integral part of the new Judge Education System and ongoing CPD activity. Initially, judges will access the platform by attending an online judge seminar where they can set up their own account, and over the course of the spring this year it will be rolled out to all BD judges. BD’s Training and Education Manager Charlotte Osborne, who has spearheaded the project, commented; “We launched the framework for our new Judge Education System in 2019 and this is the next exciting step in its evolution. We have further developed these concepts during the pandemic to facilitate and deliver online assessments, which will revolutionise how we train and measure judges. It will help us effectively engage

with judges at all levels and put them in control of their own training and development. It means judges can gain practical experience but delivered in a virtual way. “Covid has certainly taught us all to embrace the use of technology and the BHO platform will put hundreds of online judge training opportunities at their fingertips. The platform is free to access, user friendly and provides online support. The team at BHO have enthusiastically engaged with our vision for the sport – and this is only just the beginning, with much more to come.” As a proud partner of SAP and a market leader in enterprise application software, BHO systems have been used at FEI European and World Championships, as well as national shows in 26 countries around the world. Most recently, they launched their platform Equestrian on Demand, with the option to judge online with the help of eDressage™ on the basis of videos from different levels. Daniel Göhlen, founder and CEO of Black Horse One said: “We’re delighted and very excited to join forces with British Dressage and hope to expand our partnership to support equestrian sports in Great Britain with our platform and range of products in the future. Our first common judges’ education project started very successfully with online seminars – and we held the first exams together in December 2021. For those seminars, the Equestrian on Demand platform was used, as well as our paperless judging solution eDressage™, and by facilitating the SAP Business Technology platform it’s directly connected to a personal dashboard for each of the judges. “It is an absolute honour for us to be officially named as a British Dressage partner and we are very certain to deliver added value in many ways with our products and services, which are continuously further developed, for the mutual benefit of all involved parties.”

REWARDING ACHIEVEMENT WITH ACCESSIBILITY MARK

Accessibility Mark accredited riding centres are providing disabled riders with the opportunity to expand their knowledge through the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Proficiency Tests. The RDA Proficiency Tests form part of the wider RDA Education programme which is a fantastic platform for learning in an engaging and fun environment. The tests offer a goal for Accessibility Mark riders to aim for whilst also providing the satisfaction that they have worked through the Riding and Horse Care syllabus and accomplished their goal, which is then rewarded with a certificate or badge. Incorporating activities such as the Proficiency Tests into sessions has increasingly been recognised for its educational benefits for those taking part which also transcends into other areas of life. Staff and volunteers encourage participants every step of the way as the Grades increase in difficulty but are designed to be very much attainable for riders of all abilities. The tests help riders to gain useful practical knowledge but also work to provide a motivating tool that can really help to engage and focus participants. Four Winds Equestrian Centre based in Lincolnshire runs a regular Accessibility Mark session where the riders are actively encouraged to participate in the Proficiency Tests. Paula Leverton, owner of Four Winds Equestrian said: “We use the tests to give our riders a goal to work towards in their weekly lesson. They get a real sense of achievement when they get their award.” Accessibility Mark status is awarded to a riding centre that has been approved by the RDA following training and assessment. The close link with the RDA means that it can offer continuous support to the establishment to ensure it provides a first-class experience that aims to be hugely beneficial to riders of varying levels of disability. There are currently 55 Accessibility Markapproved centres across the country. To find your nearest RDA Group or Accessibility Mark centre visit www.rda.org.uk

WINTER MANAGEMENT EQUINE OBESITY

by Nicholas Dymond MA PGCert BVSc MRCVS

O

ne of the most serious problems affecting ponies and horses alike is increased body weight and obesity. During our routine calls we are frequently asked to give an opinion on whether a particular horse or pony is the correct weight and what to do about it if the answer is less than ideal. Obesity is the direct cause of many lifethreatening equine diseases and significantly contributes to others. A complex range of physiological, environmental and social circumstances have become established through evolution and domestication making the horse unusually susceptible to both gaining weight and the consequences of doing so. Any attempt to understand the problem of weight gain and obesity in the horse should take account of the special way in which the horse has evolved, especially including the long period before its domestication and subsequent development into the animal we know today. The vast majority of the evolution of the horse was spent living extensively on wide-open terrain, grazing opportunistically on forage of quantity and quality that was extremely variable dependent on season and patterns of grass growth; in the summer grass being plentiful, and in winter that growth slowing to near standstill. In common with all animals, physiological adaptation to its living conditions has been essential for survival of the horse species, which specifically includes an ability to adapt to those fluctuations. Life for the evolutionary ancestor of the horse was relatively hard and energy intensive, as individual horses were either young and actively growing, were pregnant and/or nursing a foal, or were breeding stallions, busy mating with the mares and protecting the herd. In common with many prey animals, much of the horse’s survival depended upon its ability to keep moving and to run away from danger. Consequently, horses have evolved into incredibly efficient converters of low energy forage and critically reliant upon physiological adaptation to extended periods of both plentiful food availability in the summers and of food scarcity in the winter. This capacity to adapt seasonally became established as a normal and pervading physiological feature of every horse. Crucially, the horse is not only capable of withstanding seasonal variation, its body will make those adaptations in any case. This is a problem in a modern management system where the winter lean period never really comes and they continue to be managed and fed broadly the same year-round. Grouped together the diseases that follow from failing to meet the horse’s fluctuating needs are referred to as Equine Metabolic Syndrome; the dysregulation of critically important hormones

8

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

such as insulin and cortisol, which can lead to life-threatening disease including laminitis. Unfortunately for horses, laminitis is ultimately one of the most common causes of euthanasia. The seasonal physiological adaptations for horses and ponies do not stop at nutrition and physiological changes in the metabolism of feed and forage, they also include maintaining appropriate body temperature. In common with the majority of other mammals, a horse or pony is more than capable of withstanding the effects of a wide range of temperatures and typical British weather conditions without the need, for example, to be heavily rugged or even stabled. Significantly, as maintaining an appropriate body temperature is energy intensive, rugging (or not) can play an important role in the management of body weight.

HOW TO TELL IF YOUR PONY IS OVERWEIGHT. Objectively assessing and even criticising your pony can understandably be difficult. Fortunately, there are a range of tools available to help objectively measure, make an appropriate comparison and set targets where weight loss is required. It can be difficult to identify the correct/ normal weight for any given horse as there are important breed, type and individual differences that should be considered. There are tables of weights for breeds/types available and provide a useful starting point. Measuring the actual weight of your horse or pony can obviously be very useful in itself and is also important in dosing for medications such as de-wormers. Weigh tapes, weigh bridges and tape measures, together with seemingly complex equations are useful practical tools that can be used to help assess a pony’s weight as it changes over time and to help inform planning for management change where required. Perhaps of greater practical utility is to learn

and utilise a system of body scoring. Body scoring involves making an objective assessment of a pony’s body condition by look and feel and then scoring it against a range of descriptions. Done correctly, and consistently, body scoring allows you to quickly identify changes in your pony’s condition with relative ease. The advantage being that it works the same for any type or breed of pony or horse. Again, there are many examples of body scoring charts available such as the one pictured here. You should find one that works for you. The idea is that it is quick and simple; make an assessment every week or two, give a score and write it down in your diary or calendar so changes can be tracked. Team up with a friend if possible and score each other’s horses.

WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Recommendations for managing an overweight horse or pony tend to oversimplify the realities of the task that faces their owners. Every pony is different and there is no single strategy that will work for everyone. Nevertheless, the crude and clichéd adage of ‘less input and more output’ is as valid in horses as it is in other species including humans. The challenge in the pony is often exacerbated by an inability or reluctance to exercise, to over-eat when turned out, a tendency by loving owners to miscalculate feed requirements and other management issues including over-rugging when allowing the pony to regulate its own temperature might be more appropriate. Similar to assessing a pony’s weight, making an assessment of a pony’s dietary needs is supported by a deal of readily available information that includes charts of forage requirements. This is usually expressed in terms of percentage of body weight per day. As a basic guide, to lose weight a pony needs to be rationed to 1.5% of its body weight a day. For an average 400 kg pony this equates to a maximum intake of 6 kg of food per day including hay,

ADVICE FROM THE VET

hard feed and any grass intake from pasture. It is almost impossible to assess the quantity of grass a pony eats at turnout. Studies have shown that a hungry pony at turn-out is more than capable of eating its entire 24 hour ration in grass in around 4 hours.

TOP TIPS:

1 2 3 4

Be honest. Remember that you have responsibility for your pony’s welfare, including providing a suitable diet and taking measures to prevent illness. If you can, team up with somebody else to support each other, including body scoring each other’s ponies.

Use weigh tapes to regularly calculate your pony’s weight. Assess and score your pony’s body condition regularly using readily available charts and diagrams.

5 6 7

Use charts to calculate basic feed requirements and weigh out feed using scales. Use a diary or calendar to record progress.

Talk with your vets. We are absolutely here to help and love getting involved in any activity that might benefit a pony or horse’s welfare. There is a wealth of freely available resources on the internet that can help to better understand the physiological characteristics of the horse and its needs, of how best to assess and measure a pony’s weight and body condition, and of how to treat an overweight pony in terms of exercise, nutrition and management. One resource of many that is particularly recommended for the owner of any horse or pony, irrespective of body condition, is the excellent and freely available Fat Horse Slim guide produced by the Blue Cross. This highly readable guide gives a great overview

of the subject, provides instruction on how to assess body weight, and gives a deal of advice on how to manage and feed an overweight pony, all illustrated with case examples: https://www.bluecross.org.uk/fat-horse-slim Another great example that is full of advice is this leaflet, produced by the University of Liverpool together with The Horse Trust: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/ media/livacuk/equine/documents/ Equine,Weight,Management.pdf Remember, if you are the owner of an overweight pony you are not alone. Dealing with the problem often takes a not inconsiderable and prolonged effort, together with a rethinking of established management and feeding practices. Help is always available from your vets, including at Avonvale Equine Practice. This includes help with assessing body condition and with finding a feeding and management system that is right for both your pony and you.

HOOFKIND COMPLETE TO THE RESCUE FOR EMS PONY

O

wned by Clare Lague, Barkway Katrin known as Kitty in the stable, was diagnosed with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) two years ago and had to have a strict diet change. She is now in tip top health and licks her feed bucket of Mollichaff Hoofkind Complete completely clean. Standing at 12hh, aged 14-years-old Kitty is a stunning Welsh B pony. She was worked as a lead rein/first ridden pony by Clare’s daughter but is now semi-retired due to Clare’s daughter outgrowing her and also because of her EMS diagnoses. She mainly shows in hand now and enjoys hacks out. The first time Clare took Kitty to a show was a local one and Kitty won all her classes coming home with Section Champion and Supreme Champion. It is clear that Kitty is a true all-rounder. Having done her research on HorseHage & Mollichaff 10 years ago when she first had a youngster, Clare started out feeding Mollichaff Herbal to all her horses. But when Kitty was diagnosed with EMS in 2019, Clare had to change Kitty’s diet to a very strict one due to her condition. With a lot of faith and trust in the HorseHage & Mollichaff brand Clare looked further into the range of products and moved Kitty on to Mollichaff Hoofkind Complete. Said Clare: “I knew how well my horses do on Mollichaff Herbal so I

wanted to keep with a brand I trust. “I currently have three horses of all different breeds and ages, two fed on Mollichaff Herbal and Kitty on Mollichaff HooKind Complete and they all love it. They literally lick their bowls clean! “Since being on Mollichaff HoofKind Complete for the last two years Kitty’s coat just shines, she looks healthy and her hooves are perfect. “She has to be on a very strict diet and Mollichaff HoofKind Complete has everything in it that she is allowed. I get constant compliments on how well she looks and people don’t believe that I don’t feed any extra supplements.”

M

ore than 1000 horse owners have already signed up to the SPILLERS™ Slimmers’ Club, which was launched just four months ago. The initiative is being applauded by a Scottish equine veterinary practice as a friendly, practical, and motivating way to support owners of overweight horses and ponies with weight loss programmes. “We fully endorse the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club and actively work alongside our own clients with our ‘Fit not Fat’ messaging to help to educate owners about the importance of maintaining their horses at a correct weight,” said Liz Somerville, Managing Director of Loch Leven Equine Practice in Kinross-shire. “We actively encourage all horse owners to regularly weigh and body condition score their horses, as well as seek professional advice on correct feeding. The culture that we live in makes people feel uneasy when they see a thin horse, yet the health risks associated with obesity can often outweigh the risks associated with an underweight horse. We are passionate about prevention and by working together we hope that we can reduce the number of horses that we see with obesity associated illness.” Obesity is a major welfare issue for horses and ponies, not only because of the direct

weight-associated effects, but also due to the increased risk it poses for certain clinical conditions, in particular laminitis. Other health and welfare implications include increased joint strain, respiratory stress, heat intolerance, an increase in chronic low-grade inflammation in senior horses and reduced fertility. The SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club provides horse owners with invaluable information and advice including weight loss tips, details of how to body condition score and use a weigh tape, diet plans and weight loss records. Club members will also

receive access to a dedicated Facebook group where they can share their horse’s progress and tips with other owners, as well as post questions for SPILLERS nutritionists to answer. The initiative is supported by Redwings Horse Sanctuary who hope it will help people recognise that an overweight horse can be as much of a welfare risk as an underweight one. Join here - https://www.facebook.com/ groups/spillersslimmers - for support, advice and encouragement to help keep your horse or pony at a healthy weight.

Horses evolved to graze at ground level on an almost continuous basis, and it’s well known that restricting this natural behaviour can result in various health and behavioural issues. However, the reality is that it’s not always possible to provide 24/7 access to grazing. Eazigrazer hay feeder is the ideal alternative, simulating the natural grazing behaviour that is essential to your horse’s wellbeing. So simple and easy to use, the investment won’t only improve life for your horse. Eazigrazer will also save you time, effort and money, giving you the freedom to enjoy more time with your happy and healthy companion! www.eazigrazer.co.uk

FIRST AID

CORRECT WOUND MANAGEMENT SECURES YOUNG HORSE’S FUTURE

Event rider Louisa Milne Home was thankful to have a first aid kit bursting with wound care products thanks to her sponsor Robinson Animal Healthcare when one of her promising youngsters suffered a nasty injury.

L

ouisa had only purchased Arty, along with one of her owners, Sara Brown, at the start of 2021 and has high hopes that he will have a big future in either Eventing or Showjumping. Whilst out in the field enjoying life on Louisa’s yard in Kinross, Scotland, Arty managed to get a very deep and long wound along the back of the pastern. Although Louisa and her team didn’t know exactly how the injury had happened, it appeared to have occurred as a result of Arty putting his foot through a fence and then pulling back. Louisa immediately consulted her vet as she was concerned that the wound was deep and also worried about the risk of infection or damage to the tendons and ligaments. The position of the wound meant that stitching wasn’t going to be an option, so open wound management would be required. A wound that is not able to be closed surgically will need to be left to heal by second intention and managed as an open wound, using appropriate treatment involving bandaging techniques. Healing by second intention is when the edges of the wound are far apart and cannot be surgically brought together. Arty was put on box rest for around a month with the wound bandaged to keep it clean and as stable as possible. The first 24 hours were crucial to spot any signs of infection or complications. Louisa cleaned the wound and applied a Skintact® wound dressing which was held in place with Orthopaedic padding and an Equiwarp® cohesive bandage, with a little

12

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

bit of duct tape at the bottom to prevent any dirt travelling up from the bedding. The dressing was changed every two days to start with and then every four days to try not to disturb the wound and allow it to knit together. Said Louisa: “All the Robinson Animal Healthcare products did a fantastic job. The Skintact® didn’t stick to the wound and was easy to change, which was definitely a bonus with a young horse as it would have been much more difficult if he had been in discomfort. All the products stayed in position which helped reduce the frequency of dressing changes. “Within 17 days the wound was fully granulated with no proud flesh but we kept the bandages on and Arty on box rest for a few more days just to be on the safe side. The wound had completely healed and looked amazing in just 24 days which is a great outcome.” Skintact®, from Robinson Animal Healthcare is a low-adherent wound dressing that is ideal for minor wounds with low to medium exudate. It is also double-sided and therefore impossible to use the wrong side down. Two layers of perforated film, with an inner absorbent layer provide superior wicking. Robinson Animal Healthcare has a wide range of products for all your first aid requirements

including the market-leading Animalintex® and the legendary Veterinary Gamgee®.

Because the wound could not be closed surgically, Louisa had to apply a dressing and bandage the wound, changing the dressing frequently

GINNY HOWE

THE ADVENTURES OF GINNY…

January Blues, Saying goodbye to two very special horses, and Pixie the Pomchi!

M

y Dad’s words just a split second ago as I am sat at the kitchen table trying to think of how to start my blog… “Well, you haven’t got much to write that’s very cheerful!!” It’s been a really tough 2022 so far, with everything being thrown at me all at the same time. It becomes deflating, challenging and feeling almost impossible to pick yourself up after not 1 knock, but 3! I have certainly questioned why I put myself though this, on a daily basis this last month. The very sad loss of homebred, Time To Gamble (also known as Charlie), jointly owned by myself, Rosie and Iona Dent. Charlie had his whole future ahead of him; he had all the right attributes to be a top class 4*, and maybe even 5* horse. He had the most incredible

18

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

temperament and endless scop,e but sadly this journey came to end before we could find out exactly what he was capable of! On top of all this the sale of my 5* bound, long time campaigner came really hard. The Owner sadly deciding he needed to be sold, after the most incredible journey to this point and years of fantastic memories, goals achieved and ambition for 2022, it all came to a fairly abrupt halt! Understanding the reasons doesn’t make things any easier to pick yourself up again, knowing that 5* will just have to wait a little longer! Now that the doom and gloom bit is written away, you may wonder why I have put this into my column. It’s not for pity, it’s not for sympathy; you may not even think it warrants any of this, but the reason for writing about

GINNY HOWE

it is to highlight that the journey we choose as professional equestrian people is far from an easy one! It may look like we are living the best life going from show to show, riding lovely horses all day every day, but unfortunately as I know only too well... this is a crazy rollercoaster of highs and rather a lot of lows! The countless hours and money that goes into breeding, producing and caring for our four-legged friends comes with a huge amount of emotion. No matter what level they are, or what discipline they do. From hacking to jumping around the biggest 5* tracks, they are so loved and cherished and to lose two for different reasons in the space of a week comes as a huge loss! BUT it’s time to pick myself up, turn the page and write the next chapter! The next chapter… Well, ‘Pixie the Pomchi’

made a glamourous entrance delivered by C-section and increasing my vet bill once again making me surely eligible for a loyalty card!? In amongst the goings on it has been amazing to be able to help so many of my loyal clients with their training and goals. Giving me a focus that is both so rewarding and so exciting to be planning with them their show calendar and training. A really successful XC outing at Attington which has recently re- opened. With new faces and my regulars, the horses and riders all certainly seemed to enjoy their outing. I am regularly teaching in the weekday afternoons, with the exception of Wednesday when I have my regular BS outing to Solihull when I get each one of my string of horses out and prepare them for the season ahead, giving them some fun in January jumping big jumps!

Please mention Central Horse News when responding to Advertisements

I am feeling positive and grateful; the team and wonderful owners I have, have been so supportive. This season my string is slightly smaller, but it’s just as exciting; spread across the levels from 4yo up to 9yo, with Houghton 2*L, 3*L and 4*S as our main goal for the earlier part of the year. Thank you for reading my column, if you have got as far as this point, and you are having a tough time whether it be equestrian based or life in general, as hard as it might seem at the time... Remember the storm can only last for so long and the sunshine is around the corner!

STRAW PELLET BEDDING FOR HORSES

CUTTING BEDDING COSTS – BUT NOT QUALITY INCREDIBLY EASY • EXCEPTIONALLY ECONOMICAL • ULTRA ECO-FRIENDLY STRAWMAX straw pellets are a

great new equine bedding created

For all conscientious owners, the most important deciding factor when considering STRAWMAX pellets is that they help you create a healthy and hygienic stable environment for your horses.

STRAWMAX pellets are especially helpful for time-pressed, value-conscious owners. They’re very long-lasting, they isolate urine in small patches which minimises waste, and that makes them exceptionally affordable.

• Minimal airborne dust • Huge volume & depth • Comfort & support • Super absorbent • Suppresses odour

• Very easy to use • Low on waste • Big on economy • Small muckheap • Fast composting

by Bedmax, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equine bedding. STRAWMAX is a very timely, cost effective new option for owners at a time of steeply rising costs. It’s made from locally sourced high quality straw, and it combines all the equine health benefits you would expect from Bedmax but with exceptional ease of use and economy. And unlike straw, STRAWMAX comes in handy 15kg bags through your local equine retailer, so it’s always available, reliably consistent, and easy to handle,

All Bedmax beddings including STRAWMAX now come with the new BETA NOPS Bedding logo. You can read more about what this means for you and your horses at: strawmax.co.uk/nops

store and use in the stable.

6-8 bags of STRAWMAX make a full bed 20-24cms deep in a standard 12 x 12 stable. A bucket of water per bag will swell them to 3 x volume but still leave them super absorbent to soak up urine. Maintaining an optimum bed should only require about 1 bag per week.

“I would definitely encourage any horse owner who is conscious of time, cost and waste to give it a try. My horse and I give it a big thumbs up!” Farmweek – Horseweek

EQUINE CAREERS

WHY I CHOSE TO STUDY EQUINE AT ABINGDON & WITNEY COLLEGE

By Elle Thomas studying for a Level 3 Technical Diploma in Horse Management WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY EQUINE? I had been having riding lessons for years and wanted to learn more about horses. I found out about the Common Leys Farm Campus and came for an Open Day; on arrival the campus had a nice feel to it and I knew I’d be happy here. I initially came and joined the level 1 course, stayed on for level 2 and I am due to complete the 2nd year of my level 3 course this summer.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT YOUR COURSE? The staff are all really caring, we’re taught in small groups and get lots of support. The yard has a great range of facilities and there are a good variety of horses; I love working with the youngstock. We’ve been on some great trips; this year I went to Newmarket to sell two of our homebred foals from the College stud at Tattersalls. I got to parade one of the foals in the sales ring and experience the commercial side of such a prestigious event. Last year we were involved in the covering of the mares, and we assisted with the foalings, so it was a real privilege to take the foals to the sales and be involved with this too. Over the years, there have been some fantastic trips;

Olympia Horse Show, Palace House Museum, Cornbury, Blenheim and Badminton Horse Trials, Onley Grounds Equestrian Centre, Addington Equestrian Centre, Heygates Country Feeds, Charlie Longsdon Racing and Kirtlington Stud have been the highlights!

HOW HAS STUDYING AT ABINGDON & WITNEY COLLEGE HELPED YOU? I’m not just studying a Horse Management course, I’m on a Futures Study Program. This has given me lots of opportunities that I might not have got elsewhere. I’ve been able to study for and re-sit my GCSE English and Maths, which will give me the qualifications I need to progress in the future. I have also completed work experience at Hilltop Veterinary Centre, which was an amazing experience. I have helped out with the Equine Events that the College runs and for our Social Action Project we are helping to run the Open Farm Sunday/Countryside Fayre later in the Summer. I have learnt so much about Horse management, especially stud and found out about career opportunities in this sector. By doing group work and getting involved with events my confidence has really grown. I found the Coaching module interesting, and this is what I would like to do in the future.

Our expansive, award-winning equine facilities provide top-class training across all equestrian disciplines Open Day on Wednesday 16th March | 3:30 - 7:00pm Country Fayre: Sunday 12th June | 10:30am - 4:00pm Work based Horse Care | Technical Diplomas in Horse Management BSc Equine Science - run in partnership with Oxford Brookes University

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE

A CAREER IN EQUINE?

By Sam Lacey

BHSII SM, Equestrian Centre Manager, Moulton College

The opportunities within the equestrian industry are diverse, ranging from grooming and riding jobs through to research positions. The spectrum of different job types allows those passionate about horses to pursue a career that suits their strengths and aspirations, with opportunities to travel throughout the UK and abroad. Our Equine Performance and Therapies BSc (Hons) Degree Course is the first step towards an exciting career.

Career options in the equine industry After studying at Moulton College our equestrian students have progressed to working directly in industry or have continued with their studies gaining additional qualifications to develop their careers. Here is an overview of the career options available:

Equine Groom

Working as a groom is a career that is both rewarding and challenging. Positions range from working with professional competitors to working at stud farms and rehabilitation facilities.

Rider / Trainer

There are plenty of opportunities to ride as an occupation, whether that is within the racing industry in work/ride out positions or within the competitive disciplines.

Yard / Events Manager

The development of leadership and business acumen allows students to progress to operating businesses such as riding schools, livery yards and competition centres.

Business Administrator / Sales

Working either front of house or behind the scenes in any equestrian business requires a multitude of skills, all of which can be developed on our equine courses.

Riding Instructor / Equine Lecturer

Those with a passion for teaching and learning can study additional qualifications to develop the skills required to educate the equestrians of the future.

Equine Health Occupations

Given the breadth of the equine health sector, our courses can be the foundation to careers such as veterinary assistants, nutritionists and equine physiotherapists.

Getting the best start Finding a training provider that has a range of specialist facilities combined with a supportive teaching environment is crucial to achieving your full career potential. At Moulton College, we have a highly experienced and talented team of equine lecturers and practical instructors that work with students to develop essential skills for them to flourish in industry. Under their tutelage, equine students benefit from being able to further their riding and practical handling skills by working with our resident horses in our BHS Approved Equestrian Centre. This Centre also serves the regional equine community as a competition and events venue. Additionally, the Centre encompasses the commercially operated Equine Therapy Centre with an aqua treadmill, swimming lane and cold-water spa, providing students with the opportunity to gain an insight into applied equine hydrotherapy.

Our Resources: • 40m × 60m indoor riding arena • 20m × 60m and 20m × 40m outdoor riding arenas • Cross country schooling field

Meet Stephanie BSc (Hons) Equine Performance and Therapies. I decided to study my degree at Moulton College as I wanted to make use of the fantastic facilities, and felt drawn to the College due to its smaller class sizes.

• Purpose built stabling and practical handling areas • Quality horses from a range of disciplines • Hydrotherapy suite with aqua treadmill, swimming lane and cold-water spa

The course has been great. We’ve learnt a range of interesting modules including anatomy and physiology, equitation, practical horsemanship, and even got to network with employers through events such as the BHS Coaching Convention.

The Benefits:

There are regular tutorials with tutors, and we’re always given extensive feedback which helps us to keep improving. We’re also able to share any concerns we have about our studies right away.

• Small group sizes to ensure quality provision tailored to individual needs

I would 100% recommend Moulton College to study a degree. The facilities are amazing, the staff are so friendly and helpful, and it’s been an amazing experience so far making new friends and learning more about my passion!

• Gain practical and theory based tutoring by specialist lecturers

• Ridden lessons provided by experienced BHS qualified coaches • Option to participate in ridden competitions • Access to the BHS pathway schemes including the BHS Challenge Awards • Learn from our expert commercial equine hydrotherapy team • Courses are available from Level 1 through to degree level

Want to find out more? The best way to find out more about an exciting career in equine is to come along to one of our open events where you can speak to tutors and students and discover the best path for you. Check out our website for details of future events: www.moulton.ac.uk

Warwickshire College and University Centre (WCUC) will oversee the degreelevel education at college group WCG. We have recently been awarded accreditation for two of our degree-level courses from a major industry body – further increasing the stellar reputation of our veterinary physiotherapy and animal therapy graduates. Moreton Morrell College, which is part of WCUC, has seen its BSc Veterinary Physiotherapy and BSc Canine Therapy and Rehabilitation courses accredited by the Animal Health Professions Register (AHPR). The accreditation positions the college and its students perfectly to capitalise on the continued professionalisation of both disciplines – with calls from industry to make both titles protected by law. The degrees are delivered by Warwickshire

College and University Centre (WCUC). The university centre launched last year after WCG became the first college group to hold both Bachelor and Foundation degree awarding powers and can now curate and award its own degree-level qualifications. More than 30 students are currently studying on the pair of courses and tutors say the new AHPR accreditation will future proof students as practitioners, also improving employability prospects and visibility to potential clients. Helen Coleman, Subject Lead in Higher Education at Moreton Morrell College, said: “The whole industry is moving in the direction of professionalisation, as to identify a practitioner who is properly trained can be difficult with the titles still not being protected by law. “It’s a big problem in the industry but it’s also a problem for prospective students when choosing which course to study. Receiving the AHPR accreditation makes it clear that both of the courses here at Moreton Morrell College are robust, hitting national benchmarks and will enable students to obtain insurance to practice. “Veterinary physiotherapy and canine therapy are both fast growing disciplines, in terms of people looking to enter industry and

advancements in technology/treatments. “To have been awarded AHPR accreditation is the highest-level of recognition possible for our courses and it is testament to our staff striving to deliver the best quality training for students. “It puts our students in a good position for when these do become protected titles by law, they will tick all the boxes. “Both courses will be subject to annual monitoring by the AHPR and as a college we will continue to invest time and resources to ensure our courses are hitting and surpassing benchmarks set by the accrediting body.” Steve Taylor, Dean of Higher Education at Warwickshire College and University Centre, added: “These courses have been found by the AHPR to be of the quality and standard required to train the next generation of professionals in these fields. “The accreditation continues our drive across our Higher Education provision to ensure that qualifications being delivered are modern and responding to the needs of industry.” To find out more about degree-level courses at Warwickshire College and University Centre and upcoming open days visit www.wcuc.ac.uk

BUSINES S PERSON IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Hayley Anderson catches up with Emma Dwyer of Equine Careers

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BUSINESS. I founded Equine Careers in 2009, we are the only website dedicated to office and professional vacancies within the Equine Industry, specialising in roles in Sales, Admin, Marketing, Management, Events – and much more. The jobs are office or field based or working from home, with many of the brands you will know and love. I run the

business single handed from home and really enjoy seeing all the different jobs that come in.

and team chasing. I run two team chasing teams – called ‘The Equine Career-ers’.

DO YOU COME FROM A HORSEY BACKGROUND?

HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS?

I have always ridden, but my family were not horsey. I didn’t get my first pony until I was 12. Nowadays, I have two horses and compete in various activities including eventing

I had been made redundant from my then role due to the recession back in 2008 – I was a Sales and Marketing Manager for an Equestrian Surfaces Manufacturer; I loved that job as I got to liaise

FUTURE

with all the clients about their new arenas and gallops, including William Fox Pitt and Richard Hannon. I got to go on site visits and also had fun with the marketing, organising a new website, supplying surface for events including Your Horse Live etc. Suddenly, I was faced with no job – I had already had the idea of ‘Equine Careers’ so it was the perfect time to put the wheels in motion. I wanted there to be a platform where all such jobs could be advertised in one place.

WHAT IS YOUR INSPIRATION? I loved my previous job and wanted a similar one but did not know where to look to find it. I saw a gap in the market, I saw an opportunity; I wanted there to be a platform where all such jobs could be advertised in one place.

a while, the website was empty, something I had always dreaded, but it was out of my control so nothing I could do. Then as if by magic, a year later everything just went back to normal.

HOW DO YOU RELAX AWAY FROM WORK? Riding the horses, walking the dogs, but mostly I look forward to going on holiday; sadly, we haven’t done that for a few years now. I treasure the day when I’m on a beach in Barbados again.

WHAT ARE YOUR LOVES/ HATES OF RUNNING THE BUSINESS?

WE’RE HERE TO HELP... www.equine-careers.co.uk

I love that I don’t have anyone to answer to – no bosses moving the goal posts on you. The decisions are mine to make. I can make new ideas happen quickly, but equally when you are self-employed – if you are not working, you’re not earning – so sometimes it is hard to switch off.

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE YOUR HORSES WITH RUNNING THE BUSINESS? My horses are on DIY livery just close to my home, it’s no trouble to do them before and after work, and there are plenty of people who could help me if I need to be away for work. I enjoy the routine of having to get up for them – otherwise I would spend too much time at my desk.

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST SUCCESSES? Weatherbys were one of the first clients to sign up – I had done my work experience with Weatherby’s when I was 19, and it was such a professional establishment. To then be contracted to advertise all their roles was brilliant – what a prestigious name. The cherry on the top however, had to be a few years ago when Horse and Hound advertised a few jobs with me.

WHAT HAS REALLY WORKED FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Its uniqueness: so many people have told me over the years that I should advertise Grooms / Rider jobs, but there are so many other platforms that do that, I could not see the point. I love Equine Careers being specialists and unique in what we do. We advertise some quite high profile and senior management roles too, so the marketing and attracting the right candidate must be specific. It would not work trying to market our work for Grooms too as it’s a completely different audience.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE TOUGHEST CHALLENGE TO DATE? The Pandemic. It was like someone switched off the lights for a year, it was the first time ever that Equine Careers had no new jobs to advertise; for

FOCUS ON SADDLING

In this issue Society of Master Saddlers’ Master Saddler, Master Bridle Maker, Master Harness Maker, Registered Master Saddle Fitter and Registered Qualified Bridle Fitter, Helen Reader, provides advice on the double bridle.

Q

uestion: I am interested in showing. Do I need to fit a double bridle to enter Show Hunter Classes and what advice can you provide?

A

nswer: The Society of Master Saddlers replies: Although it is preferred, Show Hunters don’t have to be shown in a double bridle. They may wear a pelham or snaffle, so don’t rush to put your horse into a double bridle. If you and the horse have not used a double bridle before then you will need to introduce the double bridle slowly to the horse. First putting the double bridle on and allowing the horse time to feel it, then walking the horse around in hand with the double bridle on before thinking about mounting the horse. The best way to make sure that

42

FEBRUARY/MARCH 2022

the double bridle is fitted correctly and therefore comfortably for your horse is to use an SMS Registered Qualified Bridle Fitter. They will be able to either fit your existing bridle offering advice about any adjustments that may be required or by fitting/ measuring for a new double bridle. The double bridle is fitted in a similar way to a snaffle bridle with the bradoon bit fitted as you would on a snaffle bridle so that it makes a gentle smile on the horse’s lips. The curb bit is then fitted just below this, so that the two bits sit comfortably in the mouth together. The curb bit will be fitted with a curb chain, this must be twisted anticlockwise to remove the twists and allow it to sit smoothly against the chin groove. A lip strap is also fitted to the curb bit and passes through the fly link on the curb chain. This will stop the curb chain raising up above the chin

groove and will prevent the curb chain from being lost should it come undone. A double bridle is always fitted with a cavesson noseband which should sit 2-3 fingers below the facial crest (cheek bone) and with space for 2 fingers at the front on top of the nasal bone. The distance around the front of the noseband should be long enough to allow the nose cheeks to sit behind the facial crest, which will also keep them away from the horse’s eyes. The noseband should be a simple plain cavesson. This is a flat strap without any stitching, the width of noseband can vary depending upon the size of the horse’s head. A larger longer face would need a wider noseband, whereas a smaller head would suit a narrower noseband. The headpiece needs to sit comfortably around the ears. There are many anatomical headpieces available now to accommodate large ears. However these must be fitted carefully to make sure that the curve sits in the correct place for each horse, otherwise it could cause more issues than it solves. The bridle groove (the area between the ears and the atlas) varies from horse to horse and therefore the width of the headpiece needs to be considered, so that a curved headpiece removing pressure from behind the ears doesn’t then cause increased pressure to the atlas. The browband needs to be a sufficient length so that it is not pulling the headpiece forwards, but not so long that it flaps around. The buckles on both the throatlash and cheekpieces should be level with the horse’s eye. If they are done up just below the browband then they increase pressure on the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), which is where the mandible (lower jaw) connects with the maxilla (upper jaw) through the temporal bone of the skull. Discomfort in this area can cause tossing or tilting of the head, sticking the tongue out, resistance to bridling or a number of performance related issues.
