2023 saw the return of All The Queens Horses at the New Year’s Day Parade in London. A very excited Jo Monck, along with her camera, made the trip from Worcestershire to London very early on New Year’s Day - guessing she didn’t party too hard the night before! We are delighted to have a four page inspiring report from Jo, starting on page 38

As we turn the page on the Year, the excitement builds for the competition season ahead. Next issue (March/April) is or Show Special, featuring previews and reports.

TheBritish Eventing Youth Programmehasbeen reworked for2023toinclude abrand newBE80u18offering, two Championshipopportunitiesand Regional Leagues.Thechangeswillhelp to deliver aprogressivepathwayfor youngerriders to follow thatisfunandfulfilling forall.

TheadditionofthenewBE80u18 Championshipand Leagues willenablemore youngriderstobepartoftheprogramme, benefitingfromthesupportandguidancethatit provides.Thenewheightcategorymeansmore riderswillhave accessto U18Regional Training, whichisinvaluable forbuilding camaraderie andmutualencouragementamongstyounger riders,providesessentialsupport forparents, anddeliversanall-round,holisticeducation for the youthmembersenrolledontheprogramme.

Alsonewfor2023willbetheintroductionof two YouthNationalChampionships –withthe inaugural YouthBE80Championshipandthe BE90 YouthChampionshipnowtakingplaceat ChillingtonHallinStaffordshirebetween9-10 September;andthe YouthBE100and2*-L Youth NoviceChampionshipsrunningatBishopBurton in East Yorkshirebetween 27-30July.Splitting theseChampionshipswillgiveriderstwo unique Championship experiences andwillhelpsetnew progressivegoals towork towardsandachieve.

Thefinal,andperhapsmostexciting, addition to theprogrammewillbethe introductionof Regional Leagues,powered by Equiratings.Thenewleagueswillprovide atransparencyofYouth Regional Rankings –notonlyenablingriderstochart their progressagainsttheir fellowcompetitors, butalsoproviding aclearqualification route fortheNational YouthChampionships.

The Regional Leagues willbeintroducedinto each oftheeight regionsofScotland,North, East Midlands, Walesand West Midlands, East,Central,South East andSouth West. Each regionwillhave their ownleaguesacross each oftheheight categories–including BE80andwill reflectthe PowerBased Average(PBA)scoreofeach combination.

ThePBAiscalculatedfromthebest three finishingscores*ofeach combinationachieved acrossany ofthequalifyingclassescontested. The Top10eligible combinationsin eachheight category,attheendofthequalificationperiod, willbeinvited to representtheir regionatthe National YouthChampionships.Onlyone qualifyingscoremustbewithintherider’sown region (thishaspreviouslybeen two),giving ridersandtheir familiesgreaterflexibilityin choosing eventlocationsthatsuitthem.

To beeligible forthe Leagues and to benefitfromtheopportunitytoqualify for

the YouthChampionshipclasses,riders need to registerforthe Youth Programme.The cost forinclusionis£30 forthe year andit alsoprovidesYouthRidersaiming forthe YouthNationalChampionshipswithaccessto course walkswithU18 coachesandsupportat designatedqualifiersineachofthe regions.

Thesenewchangestothe Youth Programme togetherwiththe recentintroductionofThe Howden WayRegional Academiesensures that eachBE regionhas afullyalignedsupport system inplaceforridersofallages.Itshouldenable everyrider to trainlikethebest,tofeelpartof apositiveandinspiring eventing community, and to getthemostoutoftheirsport.

2.BACTERIALRESPIRATORY INFECTION

Awide rangeofbacteria cancause coughing. Someofthetimebacterialinfection can developsecondary to aviralinsult.Sometimes itisdifficult to differentiatebetweenviraland bacterialinfection.Ingeneral,viralinfections subsidequicklywhereasbacterialinfection canbemorepersistent.Bacterialinfection generally requires antibiotictreatment to resolve. Sometimesyour vetwill want to perform atracheal wash (samplingfluid fromthewindpipe)inorder to identify whichbacteriaarepresent andtherefore whichantibioticswillbemosteffective.

3.EQUINEASTHMA

InthepastEquineAsthmahasbeen referred to as COPD (chronicobstructive pulmonarydisease)and RAO(recurrent airway obstruction).Theyare all essentially thesame condition,whichisbroadlyallergic airway disease.Themostcommonclinical signiscoughing,initiallyat exercise,then at rest asthe conditionprogresses. Equine Asthma canbetriggered by manyallergens, butthemostcommonaredust,fungal spores andpollen.Horseswhoareworst in thewinteraretriggered by dustandfungal spores,thosethatareworseinthesummer aretriggered by pollen.Differentiating betweenequineasthmaand alow grade, but persistentbacterialinfectionisnotalwaysthat easy.Again, your vetmay want to perform atracheal wash to differentiate. The cells presentwithintheairway canbeexamined to identifythe root causeofthe cough.

Coughingis acommon conditionin horses,anditoccursfor avariety of reasons.Themostcommon causesofcoughingareeither infectionorallergy,butoccasionally you canget structuralproblemsinthethroat that cause coughing.The followingarticle isgoing to lookatthedifferent causesof coughing,howyou candiagnosethemand what youcando to treatorpreventthem.

1.UPPERRESPIRATORY TRACTVIRALINFECTION

Thisencompassesarangeofviral conditions including EquineInfluenzaand EquineHerpes Virus.Asinhumans,viralinfections canvary inseverity, mostcausethehorse to develop afever,go offtheir food,producenasal dischargeand cough.Theyare generally very contagiousand canspreadreadilythrougha

4.LARYNGEAL DYSFUNCTION

Thisis ararecauseof coughing.Laryngeal issuesmorecommonly cause anoiseat exerciseand exerciseintolerance. Horses whohave hadlaryngealtiebacksurgery to treatlaryngealparalysis canget recurrent coughsdue to aspirationof foodmaterial and recurrentbacterialairway infection.

Avoidusing strawbedding or feedingdry hay, andtry to keep your stable cobwebfree. Horseswhoareattheir worstinsummerare generallytriggered by pollen,so stablingwhen thepollen countishigh canbehelpful. At the outsetmedicationmayberequired to bring coughingunder control,oftenoral steroidsare utilized,thenoncethe airway inflammation hasbeenbroughtunder control,management changesandinhalerscanmaintainlonger term.Horsescanbeadministeredinhalers(the sameasthoseused by humans)using ababy spaceror anebulizer forlong term control.

Allhorseswith acough, regardless of underlying cause,canbenefitfromsimple managementchanges. Avoidinga dusty environmentandputtingall feedonthefloor canreallyhelp.Ifforageisonthefloor (as opposed to in ahay net)thehorsehasitshead downwhilsteating,thishelpsclearmucus fromthetrachea.Ifyouusually feeddry hay, soakingit fora fewhours,or steaming it,willhelp;thismakes itless abrasiveinthe throatand removesdust.Unless yourhorse haspolleninducedasthma,oris veryunwell with ahigh temperature, turninghorsesout isbetter fortheairway.Atpasturehorses eatfromthefloor,move aroundandgetfresh air.Dorememberthatviralandbacterial infections canbecontagious,sogroupturnout shouldbe avoided ifthesearesuspected.

If yourhorsehas acough,whetheritis acuteorchronic,speak to your vetforadvice.

Swelling to theepiglottisandother structural irregularitiescan causepersistent coughing.

HOWISCOUGHING INVESTIGATED?

Thefirststepisaclinical examination.Itis important to identifyothersignsofillness suchas atemperature, increasedinspiratoryor expiratoryeffort,nasaldischarge,lymph node swellingor a‘heaveline’.Itisalsoimportant to get athoroughhistory,hastherebeen achange inmanagement?Particularlymoving yardsor achangein forage.Oftenclinical examination alonewillpoint towards adiagnosis,butif thisisnotthe case,orsymptomspersist endoscopic examinationis warranted.

Anendoscopic examinationinvolves passing afibre-opticcameraupthehorse’snoseand intothelarynxandtrachea(windpipe).The larynx canbeviewedtoassessforanymajor abnormalities,and atracheal wash canbetaken (samplingairway secretions).Insome casesa bronchoalveolarlavage(BAL)isrequired,this involves samplingthesecretionsfromdeep withinthelungtissue.Allthefluidssampled canbeanalysedunderthemicroscope to look atthe cellspresent,thisgenerallygivesa diagnosis.Fluidssampled canalsobecultured to seewhichbacteriaarepresent andguide antibioticuseifbacterialinfectionissuspected.

CANCOUGHING BERESOLVED?

Yes,mostofthetime coughing canbe resolved. Viralinfectionisgenerally overcome by thehorse’simmune systemwithtime, rest andsupportivecare. Bacterialinfection isusuallytreatablewithantibiotics.

EquineAsthma,likehumanasthma, can’t becured,but canbewellmanaged.Itmay take alittletime toworkoutwhatthetriggers arefor yourhorse,butonceidentifiedtry to avoidthemwithin reason.Ingeneralhorses whoareworseaffectedwhen stabledinwinter aretriggered by dust,soensuringtheyare stabledin awell-ventilated stableis essential.

Ifyouaskanyone overacertain age –andthis canbealarmingly young –about theirgeneralhealth, mostwill replytheyare fine, albeit having afew aches, painsand stiffness. Theseareexplained away by referring to thepreviousday’sactivities, apoor night’s sleeporjustgettingold. What we nowunderstandisthatthelast explanationis verylikelythebest.Infact,the scientific research communityhavecoined anew phrase to encompassthis topic–“Inflamm-ageing!”.

Inflamm-ageingisjustastrue forhorsesas itis forany otherspecies,is aperfectlynormal occurrence, ispresenttocopewithnormal wearandtear, andmayjustbenefitfromsome targetednutritionalsupport.

Inflammationispartof anatural cycle, wherethebody recognisesdysfunctionand setsaseriesofeventsinplace. Theinitiator canbeanythingfromdiseaseandmetabolic inefficiencies(such as IR,obesity) through stress to overactivityandmanycatabolic functions,ofwhichageingisonesuch factor. Thebody’sresponseis to release

pro-inflammatory factors to “ring fence”the problemarea sosubsequent correctionisnot flushed away.Oncerepair,metabolic restoration etc.hasbeen completed,anti-inflammatory factorsarereleasedandtheaffectedarea returns to normal,anyendproductsbeing flushed away.Insomecircumstances –such asageingorchronicdisorders–thecues to generate pro-inflammatory factorsstay “switchedon”denyingthesubsequent realignment.Itisherewherebioactive componentsmay have arole.

The veteranhorse canbesubjecttomanyof

thechroniccues. Ageing isaccompanied by lossof musclemass,changesinfat storageandmobilisation, anincreaseininsulin resistance, andin extreme cases,onsetofCushings. Additionally,wearand tear systems –jointdegradation, onsetoflaminitis (exacerbated by thepreceding disorders) –causephysical damage.Finally,somedecreaseinenzymatic efficiencyoccursand thismayaffectabsorptive capacity, which canact as astressfactorand alsoimpactonbiochemicalprocesses.There aretwosystemsinplay;metabolicdysfunction has adirectinflammatoryinput,whilstphysical damageindirectly worksthroughinflammatory cuesincreasing oxidativedamage.

Feedingthe veteranneeds to take these parametersintoaccount,andmetabolic stresses canbealleviated by improvednutrition,suchas moredigestibleprotein,and concentratingon hindgut fermentation forenergyproduction,but supplyingbioactives thatsupportthenormal inflammationand oxidativeprocesses canbean important factor.Equallyimportantis to actually improve thebioavailabilityoftheseactives,as theycanhave poorabsorbabilityand systemiclife.

OperationScramble waslaunchedwitha request forthreedays leavefromschool for Sofia,alwaysatrickyrequest,particularly whenitisalsothedayofthelateHMTQ’s funeral.Butapprovalfromabove was virtuallyguaranteed. TeamGameshotfooted it overtobethefirstto viewHoneybecause therewas ahugeamountofinterest.

ForSofiait wasabsoluteloveatfirst sightandtherewasaninstant connection. Honeyis16.2hhand ‘AllGirl’withan enormouspairof ears thatsheloveshaving massaged.Neverhavingridden ahorse before(despiteherheight)Sofiadid feel like apea on adrum,andthe verylarge ears were about two milesawayinfrontofher.

Thenextchallengeduringthetrial was workingouthow‘thedashboard’ worked, andtheduoaccidentallyperformed Sofia’sfirsteverpirouettewhenherlegs sentthewrongsignal. Veryimpressive forafirstdancebetweenthepair.

Five days afterthe extensivevetting was complete, HoneyhadarrivedatKingswood and wassnuglyensconced.Only foralove triangle to becomeapparent. Cadillacand Tottihave neverexactlybeen eachothers numberone fans,andtheintroductionofa tall,immaculate, enigmatic,beautiful woman hasnothelpedthesituation.Thescowling has reachedepicscales,and Cadillachas thrownhisheartontothe stablefloor.Honey and Cadillac even kiss,much to thedisgust andfuryoftheequine caveman Totti.His strutand swaggerhave been thwarted.

Peskytooth removal.Luckilythesurgeonhad previouslyoperatedonbothJoJoand Katieandis familiarwiththeOliver Gamesorthodontistrecords.Sofiahad atoothgrowinghorizontally,adjacent to hernose,and ageneralanaesthetic wasrequired.Sofiadid asterlingjob ofentertainingthenursespre-op, butpost-opgeneralanaesthesia can have brutal consequences.Theytake awhile to recoverfrom, especiallyat Sofia’sageandheight.Herplansof beingbackinthesaddlewithin 5or 6daysdidnot come to fruition.

Sofiahadbeen confidentinherplans forHoney’sdebutin earlyDecember,but the realityisthatSofiaputsherequine friendsfirst anddidnot feelthatshe woulddoHoneyjusticeand temporarily puttheplansonhold.2023willhopefully startwithHoneyshapedaplomb.

BehindthescenesatDanesmoor Eventing

The recentOpenDaywas very wellattended.The format was engaging,andvisitors were treatedtoapresentationof thehorseswhowillbe competingnext seasonas wellas aclear explanationof howhorsesatDanesmoor Eventingare produced.It wasclearfromthe start whentheguestswereinvited to view thehorsesatrest,thatthesearehappy horses, keen to engagewithpeople andcuriousaboutwhatthedayheld.

Fromhere,we movedtotheindoorarena andonceseatedtheparadebegan. Sarahwas joined by Coachandlong termOwnerTina to discussthe horsesand answerquestions.

Eachhorse wasbeautifullyturnedout,and proud to meetthecrowd. We met arangeof horsesfrominternational star ‘Chilli’sGem’ to horseswaitinginthewingssuchas ‘Alice’her sisterand yard sweetheart‘Kayla’sSurprise’.The nexthorse wasthe sensitive‘Musterd’, who was rathersurprised to seethe temporaryseatingin hisindoorarena.All fourhorseswereclearlytheir ownperson, yeteachhadthetrademark swingin their step, pricked ears and confident strideofthe

horseswhoareintrainingwith Sarahand her team.

Nextintothearena we met asensible former racehorse‘JJ’, and ayoungnovicehorse ‘Carly’.Tina explainedtheframework fortheir training,and staff Team membersLillianand Alyssarodethroughthe exercisesthatformthe foundation forfuturecompetitivesuccess.The floorplans were tempting to thehorses,who clearlyviewedtheirtrainingsessionas abitof agame.Bothhorseswereatdifferent stages oftraining yetwereconfident to answerthe questionsasked.The fences were inviting,and theridersguidedthemwith tact andsensitivity.

Listening to the conversationbetween Sarah andTina, youcansensethequiet rapport theyshare.Theairof calmand confidence ispickedupand carried forwards by the riders,andinturnthehorsesarecontent to listenandanswerdifferentquestions.

Darianboughtin‘Pumpkin’ to showhow she willlong reinaspartof ayounghorse’seducation. It wasrefreshing to seehowcalmthissuper youngmareis,andthe focusshepaid to whatshe wasbeingasked to do waspleasing.Meanwhile Davina, Sarah’sdaughterboughtherponyinand workedwithTina to linksome fences together.

Davinaandherponyare clearlyintuneandbravely warmedup focussedonher routine.Davinaand Zenshowedthebuildingblocksofhorseandrider educationwith aquieteffectiveriding styleand clear communicationwithherpony. Tina talked to Davinaandtheaudienceaboutjumping askinny, andwith alittlepracticethepair were soonjumping thechallenging fencewhichdelightedthecrowd.

Sarahreturnedwiththelovelybaymare ‘Harper’and warmedup,whilstLilianbegan to demonstratethepartnershipshehas formed with DavidSteans’ AdvancedDressagehorse. Lilian wasable to showcasewhattheyhave been workingonwhilstDarian continuedwith ‘Pumpkin’.Thehorseswereall confident towork inthesharedarena. Sarahwas ready to jump, andTina explainedhowthe exercises canevolve to askslightlymorenuancedquestionsof amore experiencedhorse.It wasfascinating to watch Sarahguidethemareoversomesizeablefences andmakealmostimperceptible correctionsthat greatlyenhancedthemare’sway ofgoing.

Noneofthehorseswereoverstretchedor boredwiththeirtraining,indeed eachhorse was keen to try what wasaskedofthem.Tinaand Sarahdiscussedwhattheywereaiming for, and

againthemessage wasthathorsesneedto enjoytheir workandfindfuninthechallenges. Thequiet sympathetic waythat Sarahproduces horsesisboostedbyher calm,positiveand confidentenergy.It’sclearthatthehorses likeandtrust herandenjoythe training. Sarahhas agreat eyefor astrideandan intuitivefeel forthehorses. Teamworkand theimportanceofahappyatmospherewas discussedastheingredientthatgives thissetup theirwings. Sarahwas keen to ride‘Pumpkin’, who wasclearlysurprised to bebackinlong reins.Onceonboard, Sarahhad aquietsmilethat showedhow muchshe wasenjoyingthisfuture star.Tina talkedaboutgivinghorsesthe time to matureandseedifferentthingswhilstbuilding gentlechallengesintotheprogramme.‘Pumpkin’ willsoonbejoiningherfriendsonthelorry to visit

newvenuesand soakuptheatmosphere. The familiar exerciseswillbethereforherwhenshe isridden away fromherhome comfort zone,and inthis way, shelearns to be agrown-uphorse. Trainingsessions over, The CoachHouse wasopenedup fortheaudiencetosocialise overtea or coffeeandthemostamazing selectionof cakes. Playingonthebigscreen were somehighlightsfromthe 2022season mixedwithsomedecidedlycutefoal footage and youngsters loosejumping.Theshowreel supportedthemorning’strainingmessage,that theaimis forthehorseandriderpartnership to have trustand confidenceineachother. Sarahwasjoined by hersponsorsTriciafrom Childeric, CarlenefromRESP Activeand Louise from Protexin. Eacharevitalmembersofthe widersupport teamthatmakes itpossible

forthe Danesmoor EventHorsestothrive.

After a break of two years due to the Covid Pandemic the London New Year’s Day Parade is back, and back with a vengeance.

As I turn into Piccadilly from Hyde Park corner early on New Year’s Day, all is quiet and reminiscent of how London must have

been during the many lockdowns For a couple of minutes I share the road to the Ritz with barely anyone else, and I have Piccadilly all to myself In the distance I see a glimpse of a riot of colour and activity outside The Ritz Hotel, just before I make a U-turn into the little ‘horse village’ that becomes home to ‘All The

Queens Horses’ for a short while on New Year’s Day It is once again set up on the closed road just outside Green Park, opposite the Hard Rock Café It seems like yesterday, and at the same time an age since I was here last in 2020; who knew then what that New Year would bring The New Year’s Day Parade was started

in1987, and wasthenknownasthe Lord MayorofWestminster’sBig Parade;it was renamedin1994.LNYDPhas over10,000 participantswho comefromtheUSA,UK, Europeandbeyond,with astreetaudienceof over500,000and aTVaudiencewhich reaches anaudienceofmorethan500,000,000. Includinghorsesinthe Parade wasthe inspired ideaoforganiser CarolineMarsh,whothenset about getting the equine section of this huge event together in only six short weeks in 2012 It was a huge success and this section of the Parade has gone from strength to strength, and this year was the 10th Anniversary

The little horse village is a hive of activity on New Year’s Day morning Horses are transformed from the ordinary to the extraordinary, as they stand calmly munching on hay nets in the middle of a London street as if they do this every day The temporary cafe is up and running, and serves much needed bacon and sausage sandwiches,

aftersome very early startsand longjourneys to get toLondon.The camaraderieandsupport betweentheriderstakingpartis very evident.

Irememberduringthe early years,Stratton Street,oppositetheRitz, wasthe horsebase forthe Paradeandhorseboxesparkedallthe wayalongit.TheMayfairHotel verykindly letridersusetheloo,not complainingonce aboutthetrailofhayleftovertheimmaculate floor! The Doorman, in his pristine uniform, happily posed outside the hotel with a horse whilst we all willed said horse not to dribble all over him! Anyway, I digress!

As riders start to mount up once again the standard of the costumes was, as always, truly outstanding Each horse and rider looking like the stuff dreams are made of, hooves are glittered, even the grey pavements of Westminster are now faintly glittered and sparkle in the morning sunshine Horses’ coats are shining and colour is everywhere; everyone

is readytogooutand wowthecrowds.

The Parade routestartsatTheRitzHotel,the crowdisabout fourdeepandunionjackflags areoutin force.Itseemsthat everyoneis keen to getback to normalityafterthe extraordinary timeswehavealllivedthrough.In fact,Ithink thecrowds were evenbiggerthaninprevious years.Ittrulyis asight forsoreeyes,seeing thehorsescomingintoviewandmakingtheir way to the off, as if they had never been away Caroline Marsh leads the teams as they proceed past the Ritz It is the most surreal hack any rider is ever likely to experience, as they pass iconic places like Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square, and under the watchful eye of Lord Nelson The atmosphere is just incredible The horses stop for the crowd and you see a hand tentatively touch a velvet muzzle for possibly the first time ever In fact, it is sometimes the first time some people have ever been that close to a horse before; you can be certain it

Thewhole experienceisunexplainable. Theatmosphereiselectric,and we didn’t wantthedaytoend.The ATQH team were so friendlyand couldn’tdoenough to makeyou feel welcome.Wecan’twait to doitallagain!”
