STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH REDWINGS LAUNCHES NEW PODCAST

R

edwings Horse Sanctuary has launched a brand-new podcast to share stories of their rescued horses and donkeys, and conversations with their expert rescuers and carers. The #InternationalPodcastDay was on 30th September, the charity celebrated by announcing its podcast series, called Sounds of the Sanctuary. The weekly podcast takes listeners on a journey through the Sanctuary, with a spotlight each week on a rescued resident and their care, plus conversations with the vets, nurses, carers and support teams who make it possible. Listeners can expect to go behind-the-scenes and discover more about Redwings’ facilities normally closed to the public, such as its specialist Reception Centre for new arrivals, Horse Hospital, Behaviour Centre and Rehoming Centres. The charity has also produced a sister podcast, called Field Notes, involving sit down chats with Redwings’ experienced team, delving deeper into the equine care and welfare issues they frequently encounter and sharing their top tips along the way, from worming to land management, basic training to creating the perfect paddock. The first three episodes of Sounds of the Sanctuary and Field Notes are already available to download from all major streaming platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. The most recent episode features an update on Phoenix, the foal who was left with life-threatening

burns after an arson attack, as his vet shares the latest news on his progress. New episodes of Sounds of the Sanctuary will be released on Mondays, and Field Notes on Wednesdays. Listeners can also subscribe to the series to ensure they never miss an episode. Redwings Communications Manager, Stephanie Callen, said: “We’re so excited to share this project with everyone. The Redwings podcast presents a chance to hear directly from our hard-working equine welfare teams and meet our rescued residents – so it’s straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak! “From the vets and nurses who help our rescued horses back onto their hooves, to the carers and maintenance teams who tend to their daily care, and the rehoming teams who find them loving new homes - this podcast brings a unique insight into life at the Sanctuary which we hope will be enjoyable to Redwings fans, new supporters and horse owners alike!” To find out more about Redwings’ new podcast and the Sanctuary’s work, please visit www.redwings.org.uk.

SPILLERS LAUNCHES SLIMMERS’ CLUB TO HELP OVERWEIGHT HORSES

S

PILLERS™ is inviting owners of overweight horses and ponies to join their new SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club for support, advice and encouragement to help keep their horse or pony at a healthy weight. The initiative is supported by Redwings Horse Sanctuary who hope it will help people recognise that an overweight horse can be as much of a welfare risk as an underweight one. Obesity is a major welfare issue for horses and ponies, not only because of the direct weight-associated effects, but also due to the increased risk it poses for certain clinical conditions, in particular laminitis. Other health and welfare implications include increased joint strain, respiratory stress, heat intolerance, an increase in chronic low-grade inflammation in senior horses and reduced fertility. The SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club provides horse owners with invaluable information and advice including weight loss tips, details of how to body condition score and use a weigh tape, diet plans and weight loss records. Club members will also receive access to a dedicated Facebook group where they can share their horse’s progress and tips with other owners, as well as post questions for SPILLERS nutritionists to answer. “Some horse and ponies simply appear to get fat on thin air,” said Clare Barfoot RNutr, Marketing and Research and Development Director at Mars Horsecare UK, home of the SPILLERS brand. “Reduced exercise and less rigorous management regimes due to COVID-19 restrictions haven’t helped and we are perhaps becoming guilty of normalising overweight horses. We all need to work together to tackle the problem, for the future

health and welfare of our horses and we hope our SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club will help achieve exactly that.” SPILLERS’ commitment to enhancing equine health and wellbeing is reflected in the feed brand’s extensive research work in the areas of EMS, obesity, laminitis and weight management; Via the WALTHAM Equine Studies Group, SPILLERS has been involved with more than 100 published research papers relating to these important topics in the past twenty years. This places them in a unique position to provide the very latest advice and practical support to help address the issue of equine obesity. With Redwings helping to spread the word, even more horse owners are set to benefit from the guidance and support provided. The charity will be sharing literature with all those taking on a Redwings horse or pony as well as sharing tips and answering practical management questions on the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Facebook group. Nicola Knight Head of Communications and Campaigns at Redwings Horse Sanctuary said: “For almost 20 years we have worked closely with SPILLERS to help raise awareness and support horse owners on a range of health and wellbeing issues. The SPILLERS Slimmers campaign is just as close to our hearts as we see more and more equines arrive at the Sanctuary requiring veterinary attention for conditions that could have been prevented with proper weight management. To celebrate the campaign and their longstanding partnership SPILLERS has donated £500 to Redwings. You can join the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club www.facebook. com/groups/322710156018763

TOWING TRAINING

I

t was announced by the government that from 20th September 2021 there is no need to take the B+E towing test and you will be able to legally tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM on your car licence when the law changes. This covers horse trailers, but are you safe and competent towing your horse? Tracy Atwood has been teaching people to tow trailers for many years, and highly recommends that you have some training, whether to improve your reversing skills or generally be more confident driving. Trailer familiarisation courses can be adapted for your needs and can be booked with Tracy through MT Training Services on 01684 773548 or email info@mttriainingservices.co.uk

MARTIN CLUNES AND LAURA COLLETT LAUNCH NEW SCHEME TO FIND THE NEXT GENERATION OF EQUESTRIAN OLYMPIANS

he British Horse Society (BHS) President, Martin Clunes and Olympic gold medallist, Laura Collett have launched a new BHS programme, Pony Stars. The BHS’ new Pony Stars programme is aimed at under 12-year-olds and aims to encourage more children to get into the sport and ultimately discover the next generation of dressage, cross country and show jumping Olympians! Pony Stars will run nationally through a network of BHS Approved Riding Centres and BHS Accredited Professional Coaches with plans to involve thousands of youngsters a year once established. Pony Stars gives children the chance to build their equestrian skills and knowledge step-by-step while having fun and making new friends. The programme comprises over 100 different topics from understanding different breeds, animal and wildlife welfare, stable management, pony health and behaviour, and the Highway Code, while developing participants’ riding skills. It’s not only pony care and riding skills developed; children will also be inspired to care for their friends, community, and the world around them with topics that focus on kindness, gardening, the countryside, being green, leadership, fundraising and volunteering. Typically, Pony Stars involves one hour a week – with practical and theory elements running over

18 months to two years. The BHS is committed to making riding a more inclusive activity and the Society will be targeting schools and special interest groups as well as families. Pony Stars is for children of all backgrounds and abilities. On the back of Team GB’s success in the Tokyo Olympics, riding schools have seen a rise in enquiries and so, with the launch of Pony Stars, The Society is hoping to nurture that enthusiasm. According to British Horse Society CEO, James Hick: “The plan is to recruit a new generation of equestrians. It would be wonderful to discover medal-winning potential, but our top priority is to grow young people’s passion for ponies and the great outdoors, build their knowledge and facilitate friendships that will last a lifetime. “We want riding to be more inclusive and Pony Stars provides a great platform with all sorts of activities that can be done at home as well as on a stable yard. It is getting a great reception with parents who haven’t much experience of horses as they can get familiar with the magical world of ponies in an easy, accessible way. Pony Stars delivers fun and adventure alongside educational benefits around the environment, animal welfare, citizenship and health and fitness. By introducing thousands more young people to equestrianism we are hoping to find the super stars of the future

– and maybe Olympians for 2032 and beyond!” BHS President and Actor, Martin Clunes said “This new programme is a fantastic way to introduce children to ponies and the benefits both ponies and the outdoors can bring them. I am sure this will give many more children the opportunity to get involved in equestrianism, and I am sure they have all been inspired today by the amazing Laura Collett who recently won Gold at the Tokyo Olympics.” Pony Stars is run by professional BHS coaches who hold BHS coaching qualifications as well as first aid and safeguarding accreditations. Find out more about Pony Stars at www. bhs.org.uk/ponystars. To locate your nearest participating Pony Stars riding centre please visit Riding Centres | Find A Place To Ride | British Horse Society (BHS). If you already have your own pony, you can find a BHS Accredited Coach here Horse Instructor & Grooms | Find a Coach & Trainer | British Horse Society (BHS). All of whom will be able to offer a flexible package for children to complete the programme - costs will cover riding lessons and theory sessions on the yard and will vary depending on location and the type of course offered by each individual centre or coach.

FIRST AID FOR HORSES By Nicholas Dymond MA PGCert BVSc MRCVS

T

here seems to be little doubt that horses and ponies are particularly susceptible to getting into trouble and perhaps injuring themselves. No matter how careful one might be as an owner or how well managed the environment, it seems almost inevitable that we all from time to time have to deal with some kind of horse-related first aid emergency. So, it obviously pays to be prepared… In addition to keeping an eye on the horse and its friends in the field or stable, being on the lookout for incident, part of any daily horse management routine should properly include a thorough close-up examination of the horse from top to toe, looking for signs of injury in order that an assessment can be made and, if necessary, timely veterinary attention can be obtained. A basic idea of anatomy is of great value here as similar injuries only millimetres apart can have wildly different implications for the horse, this can be especially important for structures such as joints where untreated infection leading from even the most innocuous wound can be career ending. In order to prevent a condition becoming worse,

12

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021

one should always aim to act immediately when an injury is discovered. A simple first aid kit is a necessity to have stored and ready in the stable and horse box. Having a few essential items stored neatly in a clean box can help make all the difference in the event of an emergency. Whilst taking great care to prevent injury to yourself or others it is important to move the horse to a place of safety where you can briefly assess the extent of any injury, ready to communicate that information to the vet if required. Although specific anatomical knowledge can be useful here, don’t be too proud when describing the location of a wound; vets are trained experts and will usually know what you mean when referring to and ‘the knobbly bit half way up its front leg’ is usually adequate to give the vet an idea of what’s going on. What the vet will certainly be interested in is how much pain the horse might be in, whether important structures such as joint cartilage and tendons are exposed, and whether the injury is in any way immediately life threatening.

WOUNDS

Horses are masters of injuring themselves, often coming in from the field with minor

cuts and abrasions. Depending on the depth and location of the wound some are suitable for management by the owner whereas others certainly need veterinary attention. In the case of all wounds ‘dilution is the solution to pollution’. Simply put, the more a wound is flushed the more contamination with bacteria and other contaminants is reduced. In practice the easiest way to flush a wound clean is with a hose pipe. You can buy special preparations of ‘wound cleaner’ but these are rarely in large enough volume to be properly effective. Small wounds that don’t go all the way through the skin can be managed at home with good hygiene. Hose the wound until it looks clean, then hose for another 5 minutes. Topical antibacterial/antiseptics can be applied such as Flamazine or Aluspray. It is best to keep horses with minor wounds stabled rather than putting them out to repeatedly contaminate the wound. However, even whilst the horse is stabled any wound should be cleaned daily with warm water. Surgical preparations such as Hibiscrub should ideally not be used as these products can prolong healing time. If you are not sure whether the wound goes all the way through the skin or not, particularly if it is near a joint, it becomes essential to have a vet assess the wound. Puncture wounds can be very dangerous as they can look very minor, yet be very deep, possibly having penetrated down to joint and bone level. If your horse has a minor wound, but is lame this is also an indication to get a vet to assess the wound. Minor wounds should not cause marked lameness. If you are not sure what to do with a wound, please call a vet. A call to the vets might not necessarily result in a visit. Advice can be given over the phone to provide reassurance and guide on basic first aid. Always seek to call a vet early as it is certainly a false economy to wait to do so until a condition has worsened; risking unnecessary suffering to the horse if inappropriate treatment is given or the severity of an injury is underestimated. When contacting the vet, it can be very useful to have photographs or video taken on your mobile phone to hand; this can make a huge difference in helping the vet appreciate the situation.

ADVICE FROM THE VET

material coming g out of their nostrils. If your horse has started doing this in front of your eyes (usually following a meal) then take all food and water away and wait for 20 minutes. Most of the time the blockage will move and the horse will go back to normal. If you don’t know how long your horse has been choking, or symptoms persist beyond 20 minutes, or you’re not sure and want advice, phone for a vet.

COLIC

Colic covers a wide range of conditions and simply refers to abdominal pain irrespective of cause. The nature of that abdominal pain can vary widely; ranging from trapped wind to strangulated intestine. The signs of colic include pawing the ground, sweating, rolling, lying flat out, not eating, not passing droppings, curling up their upper lip. This list is not exhaustive and not all horses will display all of these signs. If you think your horse is colicking, it is best to call a vet to discuss the symptoms displayed. Colic caused by mild trapped wind can sometimes be resolved with walking the horse, and the vet may recommend 15 min walking in hand, then an update, before they attend. If colic symptoms persist beyond 15 minutes of in-hand walking, or your horse is too colicky to safely walk then a veterinary assessment is most likely required. As soon as you find your horse displaying any signs of colic it is important to remove all their food (hay, haylage, hard feed) and look to see if they have passed any droppings. Then speak to your vet. Whilst waiting for the vet you can continue to walk your horse in hand if they are willing to walk. If you are struggling to make the horse walk, or they are trying to lay down put them in a safe area, an arena or dry paddock are ideal. If it is not possible to get your horse out of the stable, please just monitor over the door. Your safety is of paramount importance; even the most well-trained pony can become life-threateningly dangerous when distracted by something like severe pain. It can be very distressing to stand and watch your horse colic, however, horses in pain react unpredictably. You may be seriously injured if you enter a stable with a severely colicky horse. It is far better for both you and the horse to observe over the door and wait for the vet to arrive. In addition to being prepared with details of what the horse is doing when you call the vet, if you expect a visit, it is well worth thinking about how the vet will be able to find you. Make sure you have the address, postcode and any pertinent directions. Consider sending a spare person to the end of the drive to give directions or failing that, a brightly coloured bucket hooked on a gate post is a brilliant way of sign-posting which of the very many dark tree-lined farm tracks the vet is to drive down. The next time

your vet visits you for a routine call, think about whether the vet struggled in any way to find you; now imagine its 2 am and pouring with rain, is the address that the vet has on file enough information to get her there quickly in an emergency? Whilst awaiting the vet you can think about whether you would send your horse for colic surgery if indicated, and think about your transport options if needed. In the event of needing to admit your horse for surgery time is of the essence, so the more prepared you are, the better.

GENERAL FIRST AID

Minor swellings: if your horse develops a bruise, or a slightly puffy limb, but isn’t lame then cold hosing and walking are generally the best approach and are often curative. Anything that doesn’t resolve within 5 days, or that causes pain and lameness should be assessed by a vet. Eyes: if your horse develops slightly runny eyes in summer then it is likely due to flies, and a fly mask is generally the best approach. However, if your horse has a closed (or semi-closed) eye this is usually due to pain, and should be assessed by a vet. Conditions of the eye can deteriorate very quickly so prompt assessment and treatment are essential. It is not always possible to tell how severe the problem is just looking at the eye without specialist equipment, so a veterinary assessment using fluorescein dye and an ophthalmoscope is required. Choke: this is when your horse gets some food stuck in the oesophagus (food pipe). A choking horse can look very dramatic and some horses will display colic signs, whilst retching, with food

Equine First Aid is assistance given to a horse suffering injury or illness to preserve life. Anyone can administer first aid to an animal it does not necessarily have to be a vet. First Aid can be anything from cold hosing to bandaging a wound to walking in-hand. However, first aid should not be attempted if at any time your life/health might be put at risk. For instance, if you have a wobbly or uncoordinated horse it is not safe to attempt to walk the horse. Trapped or down horses can move violently and unpredictably. In instances like these, we would advise you ring for immediate veterinary attention, ensure nobody gets injured and monitor the horse from a safe distance. Sometimes the best first aid is ensuring that everything is prepared for the vet’s arrival. Do you have access to clean, warm water? Do you have a clean bucket? Is there good lighting in your stable? Have you got a clean stable available? Does the vet know exactly where to go? Do you have your own transport? If you don’t have your own transport, do you have a plan in place in case transport is required? Has your lorry got sufficient fuel? If your horse is insured, do you know what is and isn’t covered by your insurance? Knowing how to respond in an emergency situation can be critical in maximizing the success of treatment. You may feel that you can’t do much but sometimes even the simplest of things can help. Keeping the horse calm and the environment quiet whilst you wait for the vet would be a good example of this. POOR PERFORMANCE & LAMENESS At Avonvale we believe in listening to you the owner first and foremost. Poor performance and lameness can present in different ways in every horse, if you feel your horse is unhappy in their work then a veterinary assessment is warranted. Initial assessment will include a clinical examination looking for any swellings or areas of pain, a dynamic assessment in hand and on the lunge, then in some circumstances a ridden assessment in addition. Once a thorough assessment has been made a diagnostic plan can be settled upon. This may include nerve blocks, x-rays and/ or ultrasound examination all of which can be carried out either at your yard or at our clinic depending on your needs.

Meet our orthopaedic team who focus on lameness and poor performance investigation: Claire Maher BVetMed MSc CertAVP (ESO) MRCVS Claire, who leads our orthopaedic team, is an Advanced Practitioner in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery, having achieved an Equine Orthopaedic Certificate in 2013. Claire is passionate about helping each horse be the best version of themselves in whatever discipline they work. She finds it very rewarding helping owners get the best out of previously poorly performing horses, alongside helping horses who are lame to recover. Emily Douglas-Osborn BVSc MRCVS Emily is an excellent vet with a real passion for poor performance. A keen dressage enthusiast, she has a real eye for movement and quality, and knows from experience that increasing a horse's comfort and wellbeing in work allows for optimum performance in the arena. Emily is currently studying towards an orthopaedic certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (a masters level post-graduate qualification). Mercedes Montejo MRCVS Mercedes comes from a thoroughbred background in Ireland and really enjoys working with race horses. She particularly likes orthopaedics and poor performance investigations on sport horses and leisure horses alike. She enjoys helping all horses to reach their full potential. Mercedes is currently studying for an Equine Advance Practitioner certificate (a master level post graduate qualification).

very horse owner should take into consideration their horse or pony’s diet with the changing of the seasons. Even in the colder months, there is still a risk for horses and ponies prone to laminitis, so you should be aware of this. When grass grows under normal conditions, it contains high levels of soluble sugars and non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs). When there is a ground frost and grass is frozen, the grass accumulates more sugars to try and enable it to carry on growing in adverse conditions. This extra sugar content can be one of several different triggers for laminitis. If a horse or pony is prone to laminitis, it should be fed a low sugar, low starch and high fibre diet. It is important not to starve horses and ponies prone to laminitis as this can cause further problems. Choose forage that has a lower sugar content than hay, such as High Fibre or Timothy HorseHage and, ideally, a complete feed suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis that contains a broad-spectrum vitamin and mineral supplement such as Mollichaff HoofKind Complete. Mollichaff HoofKind Complete is made from a balanced blend of high-quality oat straw, dried alfalfa

and fibree pellets and is topped with a light dressing of soya oil with added vitamins and minerals, trace elements, including magnesium and natural plant-based antioxidants, as well as added biotin. It is low in starch and sugar, high in fibre and does not contain any cereals. It provides a low level but high-quality protein and restricted calories and so provides limited, controlled energy from high quality digestible fibre and oil-based ingredients, making it an excellent feed for good doers as well as those prone to laminitis. For further advice on feeding your horse, pony or donkey, please call the HorseHage Helpline on 01803 527274 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

EDITH AND LITTLE BETTY

RETURN TO PONY CLUB

W

HEN nine-year-old Shetland, Little Betty became unsound the Land family from Norfolk knew they had to do everything they could to get her comfortable. Owned by Nicola Land and ridden by her four-year-old daughter, Edith, Little Betty is a huge part of the family. Said Nicola: “We first noticed Little Betty was off colour when I lost my old horse, and she became a bit stressed. “We had to move her to another field, and I think this was where the problem started and we could see she was foot sore but with careful management she came right and Edith was able to get back to Pony Club rallies. “The issue started again when we moved house and although we fenced off a small paddock it seemed the upheaval of the new environment had upset her and this time, she was much worse and was very foot sore. “We decided to call the vet and the x-ray showed she had rotation of the pedal bone and was lame on one of her front legs. “I was chatting to a friend who I used to show Shetlands with to get her thoughts on what I could do and I also got advice from the vet on laminitis management and looked into supplements that may be able to help.” Nicola started to use LaminAid supplement and Podosens on her hooves in combination. All was going well until Nicola wormed Little Betty and she took a big step back in her condition going really footy. Adds Nicola: “I was really annoyed with myself but realised what I had done and kept on with the supplement and hoof oil. “Little Betty continued to look better and better and in just over a week I was talking to Edith and saying we would soon be back out at Pony Club. “Edith was thrilled and so pleased that she was able to get to a rally. She just loves Little Betty and meeting up with her friends to ride at Pony Club. We are so pleased the two of them can enjoy their riding together.” Cavalor LaminAid is a unique balanced combination of several essential oils. Each oil is charachtarised by a specific structure, composition and effect. They work on various different levels in the body to support metabolism. The oils support the sensitive intestinal flora and bring hormonal and metabolic processes back in to balance. Cavalor LaminAid also supports circulation towards the hoof. Cavalor LaminAid is used in combination with Cavalor PodoSens. Cavalor PodoSens is a therapeutic hoof oil. The blend of essential oils helps provide suppport for sensitive hooves and promotes hoof elasticity.

READER STORY

FINDING STORM

By Rebecca Edwards

S

torm entered our lives as soon as he came out of racing. He was the most wonderful horse and helped us through some very difficult times. I was quite worried when my mum took him on as I wasn’t confident at all, and barely knew how to ride. My fears turned out to be unjustified as Storm quickly taught me everything I needed to know. He was a horse that we trusted with our lives, and he was certainly part of the family. We did absolutely everything with him! Unfortunately, my Mum was getting very poorly, and I just couldn’t give storm the time or care he needed anymore. I decided the best thing for him was to rehome him. I rehomed him to a friend who sadly put him into York horse auction. My mum died shortly after this. She never really forgave me for doing for parting with Storm, but I really had no choice in such difficult circumstances! Storm was such a treasure; he meant so much to our family, and especially my mum. With Mum having passed, Storm was very much on my mind, so I began the hunt to track him down. I wrote post after post on horse sites, over and over again, and never gave up. We had a message saying he was bought from the auction by a lovely lady called Helen Walker. Storm was the last horse in the market, and no one had wanted him, so Helen purchased

him. He went on to mean an awful lot to her family too! He helped her daughter Zoe through a real bad time; they believe he truly saved her! He had a wonderful life with Helen; hunting, showing etc for eleven years! For a slower pace of life, Helen gave Storm to her best friend. Then, a few weeks ago I tracked Helen down, who said she would try to help reunite Storm and myself. His new owner, Marie gave me a call; she said she thought Storm should come home. After eleven happy years with them, they thought the time was right for him to come back. We set off the very next day across the country to pick him up, travelling to White Haven from Lincoln. When I saw him I still couldn’t believe that it was actually ‘my boy’, stood there looking at me. Above us was three rainbows, which Helen, Marie and I believe was a sign! He had been so well cared for; he looks absolutely fabulous for an old boy now. I have never known such lovely kind and strong people, as it took a lot for them to let him come home after all those years! They were willing to put themselves through what I went through, so Storm could come home to me. I never wanted to give up finding him, and I didn’t. It really did pay off, and it was worth every second. My Mum was devastated with the rehoming back then, so it gives me comfort knowing how truly happy she would

be knowing he’s back home where he shouldn’t have left! I believe he remembers me; he’s still the same lovely, kind and big-hearted horse he was when he came into our lives. Without Helen, I don’t believe Storm would still be here. She had to bid against the meat man; I thank God that Helen was there that day and gave Storm a chance, giving him the best life! I still can’t believe he’s home. I think it will take a while to sink in. It truly is a happy ending to what was a devastating sale! Helen and Marie will certainly stay in contact, which is really lovely, and I will forever thank them for what they have done for Storm, myself and my Mum. I hope we’ve helped give people looking for their old friends hope; just never give up trying to find them and they will show up!

STRAW PELLET BEDDING FOR HORSES

• Easy to use • Ultra absorbent • Highly economical • Very eco-friendly

A LL T HE B EST OF S TRAW A ND P E L LETS STRAWMAX straw pellets are a new equine bedding option created by the UK’s leading manufacturer of equine bedding. STRAWMAX combines the benefits of straw and pellets, and solves the increasing problem many owners have with sourcing good quality straw.

Key benefits for Horses

Key benefits for Owners

As with BEDMAX shavings, the top priority in the development of STRAWMAX pellets is to help owners create an exceptionally healthy and hygienic stable environment for their horses that:

STRAWMAX pellets are particularly helpful for time-pressed, value-conscious owners – and for wet and messy horses – because they are:

• Generates virtually no airborne dust • Fluffs up into a deep comfortable bed • Absorbs exceptional quantities of moisture • Absorbs and suppresses odour

• Labour-saving & easy to use • Very low on waste & big on economy • Very small on the muckheap • Very quick to compost

For owners who prefer straw, STRAWMAX offers all the natural qualities of a traditional bedding, ‘re-engineered’ to maximise its benefits and eliminate its downsides.

Why Choose Premier Flex HA? Not all equine joint supplements are the same, in fact they differ enormously in the levels of the active ingredients contained in them. A top quality joint supplement should contain not only a good level of Glucosamine which is a relatively cheap ingredient but also high levels of Chondroitin, HA and MSM. Premier Flex HA is possibly the highest spec equine joint supplement today! “Ok firstly I’m not one to write reviews, but here goes. I sound crazy, but this supplement has me crying with happiness. I can’t even begin to explain how this product has not only changed my horses comfort level but also my mind set. My happy, cheeky and very beautiful cob is back to himself ...Thanks you to whoever developed this product, you will never truly know how much of an impact you have made ?? I hope this works for your horse as well as it has for mine.” Happy Cob Owner, Lancashire

TOP TIPS FOR A TIDY TACK ROOM When was the last time you organised your tack room and took stock of all your horse wear?

rom piles of rugs to boxes full of equipment you forgot you even had, a good sort out now will have you all set for winter. Items you no longer need can be turned into cash when you create a free Tack Room Trading account and list your items to sell online. What’s more, by giving these items a new home you are making the choice to help create a more environmentally friendly equestrian community where tack and equipment gets put to good use.

you don’t know where to put something so it just gets shoved in a drawer, things soon get messy and become difficult to find or forgotten about.

moments adding to the walls, you can find excellent value frames for your photos and choose a colour that suits your fixtures and fittings.

3. Label your storage – to save time and a lot of rummaging, make sure you label everything. It is a good idea to separate your equipment by season, for example fly rugs and lightweights can be stored in your summer box which is easily identified.

Visit tackroomtrading.com and click on ‘register’ to create your free account and list your unwanted tack room items.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO GET YOU STARTED:

4. Keep on top of your housekeeping – allocating five minutes each week to have a quick sweep up and wipe down will keep your tack room in good order and save you having to spend longer cleaning another time.

1. Take stock – get all of your items out of storage and lay them out (you may be shocked at how many things were tucked away!). Make a list of everything and decide if there is anything you no longer need so you can set it aside.

5. Get creative – if you have a small tack room or a lot of items to house make clever use of the space with various storage solutions. You can get inspiration online and homeware stores have lots of great options.

2. Make space for all of the items you decide to keep – this may sound obvious but if

British Showjumping National Championships Charlotte with Cash looking smart

I

had a very successful trip to the National Championships. I took several horses, some younger ones who hadn’t been out for a little while as we had been busy abroad. They all improved over the weekend, James and Vedet both jumped very well. Equine America Gunner hadn’t been out for a while either as he had been busy with his stud work. He was a little rusty, but it was great to have him back in the ring. Equine America Tornado des Monts was as good as always and Equine America Kandleford was very good but it didn’t go according to plan for him in the Grand Prix, he tripped after the triple bar and it unsettled him. Equine America Cacharel was super in the Grand Prix and qualified us for Horse of the Year Show.

ask me to be a team member to travel to Riesenbeck, Germany for the European Championship I wanted to call everyone and tell them! I couldn’t wait to get out there. We had a couple of weeks to prepare; Will and Pippa Funnell gave me a tough drilling when I went for training. Cash jumped great and we practised over some tricky lines and distances. When I arrived at the show, I went for a walk around after I’d been to see the horses. The stables were brand new, purpose built for big shows. The boxes were huge and they all had an exterior window, which Cash loved. All the facilities were incredible, nothing had been forgotten. Every stable block had wash bays and large areas for hay and feed. Olympic Champion, Ludger Beerbaum, had been involved in the design of Riesenbeck International, which also has three outdoor competition arenas. The arena and venue for the Championships were fantastic. The following morning, I went to get ready for the trot up. Charlotte normally trots up, so it was quite nice to do it for a change. We had been given a team uniform to wear and all looked very smart.

TEAM SELECTION

Being selected to ride on a British Team is always an honour. My Dad, Tim, always said that riding on a Nations Cup Team was not only a fantastic feeling because you were representing your Country but also because the atmosphere is like nothing else. My ambition at the beginning of this year had been to get onto more teams, with the hope that I would jump well enough to put myself forward with Cacharel for the Europeans Championships. When Di Lampard, Performance Manager, called to

TRAINING TECHNIQUES £10.00

SHOW JUMPING SOLUTIONS £10.00

All four horses went through the inspection without any problem. Each morning, I rode early and then spent some time watching more senior riders work their horses. Normally, I don’t get any time to watch everyone because I would have other horses to jump, but because I had more time there it was great to do it. The first round is a big speed class; Cash was fantastic but just touched the last fence, a very wide oxer. I was really pleased with her. The second day was the first round of the team competition, again I was pleased with her, although, I would have liked to have ridden better. The team qualified for the final team round the following day. I was very disappointed in my approach to the combination which meant we had two parts down. There will be other chances for us both, but I would have liked to have gone better. I learnt so much from the week there. The team was made up of William

Whitaker, Emily Moffett trained by Olympic Gold Medalist, Ben Maher, Georgia Thame trained by Shane Breen, and I was very lucky to have Will Funnell with me. Poor Will was still on crutches from his broken ankle. It made it quite tricky for him to walk distances, which we did laugh about on numerous occasions, but he was a fantastic help. I am very grateful as a coach and mentor. Being the youngest rider at the European Championships in 2021 was quite something. We were in fact, the youngest team there. The friendship you forge on a team is a strong one. I would like to think that the four of us will always look back on this as a valuable experience. One which we wouldn’t be able to achieve without the support of British Equestrian and World Class. We had lots of support in numerous ways out there and I am very grateful for all their hard work.

GINNY HOWE

THE ADVENTURES OF GINNY …

Not even sure where to start....

T

Ihe last month has certainly been a crazy busy, hectic yet successful one! Having just got back from the most amazing Blenheim horse trials with 2 fantastic horses, I’m feeling incredibly lucky. Not only with how they performed but privileged to have such an incredible event pretty much on my doorstep. More about Blenheim later, but I shall begin with the build up to the event and talk a little about the other horses I have in my string and what they have been up to. Cornbury International Horse Trials, what an incredible venue and beautifully run event. Known for its big and bold tracks ranging from Novice up to 3*Short, it takes the right preparation and horses with the appropriate mileage to take on the atmosphere filled event. I headed there with the lovely mare Ballinamurra Changsha making her 2*Short debut, along with Interlaken W. Both horses had consecutive good runs and top 10 placings at novice level and felt ready to make the step up. The mare, also know as Bee, has improved on every outing and is proving to be very exciting and consistent for myself and her owner Pippa. A couple of great dressage lessons with my trainer Henry Boswell and she certainly did some great posh trotting in her first long arena and tailcoat test. Rideable and accurate she scored a competitive 31. The show jumping arena had a real international feel; something she was yet to experience. It was technical and up to height. Not phased by any of the above, she jumped a lovely round just having one down. As expected, the XC asked plenty of questions. The hilly terrain was also something to consider whilst walking the course and riding appropriately. Bee was bold and brave, extremely straight and felt absolutely brilliant all the way round, to go clear and just adding a few time faults. A top 20 finish for her in the big section, and plenty learnt along the way. This has set her up nicely for next season’s spring events, where she will be aimed at a 2*Long. Interlaken W also did a very pleasing test to score 31; he too had an unlucky 4 faults in the show jumping. Unfortunately, on XC day he didn’t want to play, and we are writing this off as an off day. Previously not a fan of the Cornbury XC... I don’t think he wants to go back there next year! Next out, was my lovely homebred 6yo mare by Kannan, Cavorting Kandy, going there after minimal BE100 runs. I knew this was going to

be a huge step up for her to be doing her first Novice at such a track. Going with the opinion of take it phase by phase, she did a great dressage and scored competitively at 33; the show jumping was technical and up to height, like the 2*, but she jumped very well for just one down. She went very green on me on a couple of occasions but was certainly very up for it. The XC for her was big and bold, but she is a brave mare, so I decided to run her and see how she felt. She set off out of the start box as if she had a whole season at that level under her belt, which was not the case. Every question asked, she just took it on and absolutely loved every minute of galloping around the park. Coming home with a clear in her first Novice. I was so happy, especially with how she felt the whole way round. Particularly exciting after a winter of more training, next year she will have even more of an education, and who knows what the future holds for her. Lastly SixMileWater, after flying round his first Intermediate a few weeks before at Wellington, I was excited to have him at Cornbury. He has a huge stride, and I knew he would love those hills and big jumps. Doing his second intermediate, and feeling even more of a partnership together, he did a good test to score 31. Then, he certainly knew it was time to show off in the SJ arena; loving the crowds and jumping brilliantly to go clear. On to the XC, and he showed his blood and class all the way round; making the track feeling like a BE100, to jump a super clear, adding just time

faults to finish 11th. I couldn’t be happier and more excited for his owner Nicky and I to be heading next to Osberton 7yo Championships. Now to the Blenheim boys, CHF Archie and Trendy Captain Clover; both having had a great prep run at Wellington. Archie was making his debut 4*Short run at only an 8yo, and Captain competing in the 4*Long. Captain was first of the two horses into the dressage arena, and wow what a setting to be dancing on horses in front of the Palace. Captain always tries his very hardest in the white boards. He did a good test, great changes and some really nice work, despite a couple of mistakes. I was very happy with how he felt, yet a little disappointed with his mark of 35. But, hey.. that can be dressage. Archie did his test on the Friday; it was by far the most atmospheric arena he will have been in thus far, and he handled it light a pro. Still not fully established at this level in terms of his changes and other movements, I was really pleased with how he went. Pulling off one

very good change and some lovely moments. It’s exciting to feel how far he has come in only 2 years, and with a winter of more training how competitive he will become in the white boards. Slightly harshly marked, in my opinion, and not rewarded for the good bits; the future being the important thing to remember at this stage. Saturday was SJ day for Archie, a foggy misty morning, struggling to see the show jumps first thing! A big track with technical lines. Despite having 2 fences down, Archie jumped really well and was not alone! Having jumped the coloured poles, it was time to prepare for the 4*Long XC. Standard Blenheim style, it was big, bold and galloping. Some technical questions dotted all around the course. Captain has been on great form all season with many top 3 placings and he felt more than ready for the challenge. Feeling just incredible all the way round, he jumped quick, accurately and boldly resulting in a fantastic clear adding just 7-time faults. I am absolutely buzzing with this little horse; he is just a joy to ride. Sunday morning, time for the reverse of phases. Archie was out on the XC, a shortened course for him but very intense with question after question the whole way round. We certainly knew it was a 4* track. Archie is very brave

FOCUS ON SADDLING

‘FIT FOR WELFARE’ Innovative New Virtual Event Hosted by the Society of Master Saddlers

A

n innovative new virtual event ‘Fit for Welfare’ has been created by the Society of Master Saddlers. Correct fit takes a team, and this online event explores how best to approach fit for each part of the tack triad: the horse; the saddle and the bridle; and the rider. Ten leading industry experts will share current research and best practise during the virtual event that runs in three parts from 10am to 3pm on Saturday, November 6th. For anyone wanting to develop their knowledge and to ensure both horse and human are comfortable, confident, and happy, this event will deliver a broad range of insights into Horse FIT, Saddlery FIT, and Rider FIT. Maintaining good fit for horse and human is a long-term and team effort, and an essential part of ensuring high standards of horse welfare.

PART ONE COVERS HORSE FIT:

Dr. Jane Nixon, Veterinary Advisor to the Society, will discuss what ‘Social License to Operate’ means for the equestrian world. What must we do to lift standards in riding and horse care at home and in competition – and how do we clearly demonstrate the continuous improvements being made? Sue Palmer, ACPAT and RAMP registered Physiotherapist, and author of ‘Brain, Pain or Training’ talks about how you can recognise discomfort in your horse. Dr. Rachel Murray, BEF World Class Programme veterinarian, examines how we can help our horse to properly carry a rider, using ridden and in-hand cross-training.

PART TWO COVERS SADDLERY FIT:

Catherine Baker is an SMS Qualified Saddle Fitter and Master Saddler, and a course creator and lecturer for our Bridle Fitting qualification course. Her video case study takes us through the process of measuring, designing, making and fitting a bespoke bridle for one of her clients. Kate Naylor, SMS Master Saddle Fitter, takes us through a saddle fitting appointment with a new, young

50

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021

horse at the start of their ridden career and already changing and developing. This session will be rounded off with Dr. Russell MacKechnie-Guire discussing current research and the use of saddle pads.

PART THREE COVERS RIDER FIT

The team at Hartpury University take a broad look at the rider: how we ride, our brains, what we eat, and our bodies. Dr. Celeste Wilkins shows that achieving harmony with our horse is not a case of one size fits all – it’s in the reach of everybody; Emma Davies offers mental tools to help with anxiety associated with rider; Talitha Corbett shares ideas for competition-day nutrition that will support your body and your brain; and Liz Launder, MSc. Osteopath will show quick and painless pre-riding exercises to help us be better partners. HRH Princess Royal will give a foreword to the event and after each session there will be the opportunity for a live Q&A.

TO JOIN THIS EDUCATIONAL AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING DAY PRICES ARE: Early Bird - before October 16th - £25 Full Price - £40 SMS members and members of SMS partner organisations receive a special rate of £20. Please look out for newsletters from your member organisation. Ticket holders may access the recording for two weeks after the event. To book your place, please visit Eventbrite: https://bit.ly/FITforwelfare Your personal link to join the event will be emailed to you at least two weeks before the event. FOCUS ON SADDLING

In this issue Society of Master Saddlers’ Master Saddler, Master Bridle Maker, Master Harness Maker, Registered Master Saddle Fitter and Registered Qualified Bridle Fitter, Helen Reader, provides advice on martingales.

Q A

uestion: My horse is unsettled in his head carriage. It has been advised that a martingale may help, what type should I use and how should it be fitted?

nswer: The Society of Master Saddlers replies: There are a number of reasons as to why your horse could be unsettled in its’ head carriage, ranging from discomfort from the bit, bridle or saddle to a veterinary issue. Before looking at martingales to help the head carriage it would be advisable to try to find the cause of the unsettled head carriage. I would recommend

having an SMS Registered Qualified/Master Saddle/ Bridle Fitter to assess the horse and its’ current tack and also a Qualified Body Worker (Physio/ Osteopath etc.) or Vet to assess the horse for any underlying biomechanical or veterinary issues. Once all these checks have taken place and you decide that the horse does require a martingale then a Running Martingale would be the first option. The Running Martingale has a strap which sits around the horse’s neck with a second strap running through a loop on the first attaching to the girth at one end and to the reins at the other end. The strap splits into two narrower straps as it passes through the loop on the neck strap. These straps have a ring at the end, which the reins are passed through. The rings can move freely along the reins, as the horse moves its’ head. To stop the rings from catching the billets by the bit there is a leather or rubber stopper. The martingale should only come into action once the horse lifts its’ head up high when the action of the martingale then encourages the horse to lower its’ head. The neck strap should be fitted so that you can fit a fist inside it on the front of the horse’s chest. The other strap is fitted with a fist under it between the horse’s legs so that there is room for movement when the horse is working but not too much slack that the horse could catch a leg in it. The other end with the rings should be lifted up towards the horse’s throat and be a hand span away from the jowl, which allows for some head lift while the horse is working but not excessive head lift which could become a safety issue.
