Welcome to the September/October issue. My colleague Zoe has again been very busy researching and collating a vast amount of event dates for this issue. So, if you are looking for an event to attend, look no further than the CHN Diary!

Here in Oxfordshire, we are lucky enough to have Blenheim Horse Trials on our doorstep, and as always it proved to be a thrilling event with much to look at, and plenty of opportunity to shop!

The lovely horse on the cover of this issue is ex-racehorse Coneygree at Hickstead in 2021. I came across this photo whilst working on the ex-racehorse feature, and knew it would not disappoint as a cover. If you own an ex-racehorse please be sure to read about the Thoroughbred Census on page 16. We are keen to help promote ex-racehorses and help ensure their safe futures. With this in mind, next issue, we are going to start following the progress of a racehorse going through the retraining process. We would also love to hear about our readers’ ex-racers, whatever their new discipline is - even the happy hackers and companions.

ROSALIND CANTER CROWNED CHAMPION OF BLENHEIM PALACE INTERNATIONAL HORSE TRIALS

The world number one Rosalind Canter crowned a brilliant season by winning the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials for the first time, riding Alex Moody's characterful 10-year-old Izilot DHI.

The excitement was maintained until the very end when the overnight leaders, world champion Yasmin Ingham and Banzai du Loir, lowered the very last showjumping fence to drop to second place.

Ros, who was the 2018 world champion, has had an incredible season, winning Badminton and the European title, but a victory at Blenheim has so far eluded her.

The Dutch-bred Izilot DHI has won CCI4*S competitions at Bramham and Blair Castle, and is hugely talented, but he can also become distracted by crowds on the big occasions. However, he maintained his focus at Blenheim for a foot-perfect performance across all three phases.

"I am so proud of how he jumped," said Ros. "He can be cheeky and spooky, but he coped very well this weekend and that is exciting for the future. I feel there is loads more to come with this horse and feel very lucky to have him. He is now ready to go on to a five-star."

Yasmin Ingham was sporting in defeat, but she did achieve her overarching aim of qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. "I thought it was all going rather too well," she said ruefully. "But I am still

thrilled with how it went. Banzai is such a lovely horse to have."

Harry Meade achieved his best result at the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials, finishing third on his dressage score with Annaghmore Valona, a mount he has taken over from Australian rider Sam Griffiths.

Tom McEwen was fourth on Brookfield Quality, Tom Rowland was fifth on Dreamliner and Piggy March ended up in sixth place with one rail down on the stallion Halo, winner of last year's CCI4*-S at Blenheim, completing an all-British top six.

Future News, in this year's CCI4*-S for eight and nine-year-old horses behind Oliver Townend on Paul Ridgeon's outstanding grey mare Cooley Rosalent. New Zealander Tim Price came third on Jarillo.

Piggy had set a hard target for Oliver, who could only afford to be one second over the optimum cross-country time, but the nine-year-old Cooley Rosalent flew around David Evans's beautifully presented course.

"It was quite a challenging track for eight and nine-year-old horses, but it was exactly right for a championship," said Oliver, who has had a good week with a recent win at Burghley.

"This horse is something different. We've had her since a four-year-old and she's been special since the word go. She's got lots of blood and she really wants to do it; she had her ears pricked all the way round the cross-country."

"Blenheim has often been a proving ground for stars of the future and I have no doubt that the two winners of 2023 will go on to greater glory," said Event Organiser, Katrina Midgley.

"I also have to congratulate everyone who took part in the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials — each and every person involved has contributed to make this a truly special event for all of us."

he final journey to Le Mans was a steep learning curve and a trial. Team Oliver Games was beset by hazards, challenges and tests. None of which were positive, but instead tests of endurance, fortitude, determination and a steely grit. Oddly enough JoJo had previously said “I just can’t get excited about this one. I have a funny feeling”. How right she was, and it just proves that you should always listen to your gut instinct. It is there for a reason. And it is there to protect you emotionally and to moderate your expectations. Ignore at your peril.

Firstly, Joey hurt himself in the stable. He has always been a vociferous ‘roller’ as he so efficiently demonstrated at Hickstead. This time he knocked himself on his fetlock and that meant that Cadillac had to be substituted at the last minute for the Team. The vetting for the squad prior to departure was on the Monday and Cadillac was presented in his place.

IT WAS A JOURNEY

Tfor slight alterations and it was a challenge to get them back to her in time. Gina at Equiclass and the team at Secchiari in Italy truly busted themselves, but difficulties at Customs meant their arrival was not meant to be. The team launched into ‘Operation Emergency Boots’ for a second pair to be made which is an intricate, expensive and time consuming process. Sofia was measured on the Friday, and the boots were out for delivery on the Wednesday. An astonishing turnaround. They were scheduled to arrive in Cheltenham on the Friday but Sofia was leaving the yard at 10am. The vital delivery could not be guaranteed. Therefore UPS re-directed them to Parkers Transport who were transporting other Team GBR Squad members. Genius. Sofia did not have to go down the centre line in her socks. There is untold gratitude for the heroic efforts of Gina, UPS and Parkers for achieving this logistical miracle.

The Opening Ceremony was jubilant and the Team attire had been largely masterminded by Sofia and JoJo who have keen eyes for design and representation. Co-ordinated embroidery completed the minutiae of the team outfits. Colourways worked to brilliant effect for a patriotic and very British turnout. Caroline Bell was proud.

Now things come in patterns of the number three. And this was proven by the following events. Sofia’s prized boots had to be sent off

Thirdly, once in France Cadillac was not himself. He did perform some impressive Capriole and Levade movements in the warm-up area which were not required in the tests. The fact that Cadillac even continued to try to perform is a testimony to the relationship that he and Sofia share. A slight tooth problem has been diagnosed, but we all know what toothache is like. Unbearable. And yet that pony performed to the best of his ability and brought the team score up enough for them to garner a fifth placing. Sofia’s uber sensitive hands and feel saw them through what could have been a catastrophe. It is not unknown for partnerships to retire mid-test. Despite the challenges the Team acquitted themselves with pride, and next year will see a more seasoned team come together for a tilt at a medal.

The bright point of the Championships was the camaraderie between the Nations. Sofia has an enormous Union Jack which every competitor signed. It now hangs in pride of place in her room at home. Even when she is collecting her pension it will still be in pride of place and representative of memories that cannot be bought but

There is a new family member for Team Oliver Games. Max the Dax has arrived! Or rather been collected on an epic ten hour jaunt up North and back down south again. He is a joy and is learning to love and live with his step-sister Tallulah. He is a very passive little chap who rolls onto his back at every opportunity. The next step is going to be lead training. Very amusing with a dachsie in long grass.

Where has he gone? A confined training area is in the planning to ensure his safety.

Pre-purchase Vetting You’ve found the perfect horse, here’s what you can expect from your pre-purchase equine vetting.

Pre purchase examinations or ‘vettings’ have been performed by veterinarians for more than 150 years. Legal references to this procedure date back to 1842. We all know that buying a horse is a big and often expensive decision. A PPE can help identify any health problems that may arise.

Most PPE exams are performed at the stables where the horse is currently kept but appropriate facilities are essential. To perform a PPE you require a dark stable to examine the eyes, a firm level surface for trotting and lunging and a suitable arena to exercise the horse.

The standard PPE incudes 5 stages, though a ‘limited’ or 2 stage examination may be performed if requested.

Stage 1: Preliminary examination

Full clinical exam of the horse including body composition, heart (at rest), lungs, skin, conformation and identification of the horse

Stage 2: Walk and trot in hand

Assessing the horse at walk and trot in a straight line, backing up of the horse, circling and where appropriate flexion tests and lunging. In certain circumstances, when the examining veterinarian concludes that it is unsafe or inappropriate to perform flexions or a hard lunge these tests may be omitted from the examination.

Stage 3: Exercise phase

This exercise needs to be strenuous and so ridden work is preferable, though in certain circumstances lunge work may be acceptable. This phase also includes the horse being saddled and mounted, ridden at walk trot and canter (and

galloping as necessary). Assessment of wind and abnormal respiratory sounds plus auscultation of the heart and lungs immediately after strenuous exercise.

Stage 4: Rest

Assessing cardiovascular system and lungs following a period of rest.

Stage 5: Second trot up

Repeat walk and trot in straight line, flexion tests or trotting a small diameter circle are sometime repeated at this time as needed. This is to determine if any lameness has become apparent following exercise.

At the end of this, there is not a specific ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ but rather the following conclusion:

Essentially a PPE helps to provide information and hints about how the horse will progress but unfortunately, we cannot predict the future. The aim of a vetting is to conduct a thorough clinical examination on behalf of the potential purchaser to identify any factors that may prejudice the horse’s suitability for its intended use whether that be a pony club lead rein, a happy hacker or a 5* eventer! A PPE is designed to determine whether the horse will be sound and able to perform the job you intend for him or her. The question should not be – have I found the perfect horse? But instead, have I found a horse whose flaws are ok with me and one which I can have a productive relationship.

In some cases, x-rays may help to make the decision of whether or not the horse is likely to be suitable for what you want. For example, if the horse is sound at all stages of the examination but has an enlarged or swollen joint, x-rays might help to decide whether or not the abnormal appearance is important. X-rays taken for this reason are interpreted by the vet performing the pre-purchase examination. Insurance companies usually require x-rays for horses to be purchased for £10 000 or more. These x-rays are not part of the pre-purchase procedure and are examined and interpreted by the insurance company’s own veterinary surgeon to help them assess the likely insurance risk.

How you can help your vet do the best job for you:

•• Be realistic about your ability and what you plan to do with the horse, so your vet has the appropriate planned use in mind when they examine the horse

•• Tell your vet if there was anything that concerned you when you tried the horse or anything you are worried about (maybe from a previous horse) so they don’t disregard a finding that could be more significant to you

•• You may wish to ask the vendor for the horse’s veterinary history before the vetting, particularly if there are any unexplained gaps in its competition history (it is very helpful to be able to look so many results up online these days!)

•• Find out in advance from your insurance company if they have any specific requirements in order to be able to provide insurance cover for your new purchase!

•• Be present during the vetting so if there are any concerning findings or lameness you can see them!

How do I keep my teenage horse fit and in work?

Teenage horses are thought of as ‘getting on a bit’, with the official age of a veteran horse still 15 years old. However, there are lots of teenage horses out there competing at the higher levels of most disciplines and huge numbers used for leisure riding well into their twenties. So, do we have to do anything differently to maintain a teenage horse compared to a younger model?

In most cases, not really, everything in this article I would advocate for horses of all ages, or certainly all those who have been backed. However, as horses age things that didn’t bother them when they were younger may start to be more of an issue, and tackling those things head on will prolong your horse’s athletic life.

Farriery

The old saying ‘no foot, no horse’ is as always very pertinent. As horses get older, they really need good regular farriery to maintain good foot balance. In their younger years allowing their toes to get a little long and pushing their shoeing interval to 8 weeks is ill-advised, but probably won’t cause significant lameness. As they age, they become less tolerant of foot imbalance and certainly at higher risk of injury, so ensuring they are on a 4 – 5 week shoeing cycle with good heel support and mediolateral balance is essential. Foot radiographs can be taken periodically to help your farrier maintain the best possible foot balance.

Dentistry

A horse’s teeth naturally limit the life span of the animal. Most horses won’t start losing teeth until their mid-twenties, but agerelated dental problems can develop much earlier. Caries lesions are very common in horses, these are essentially cavities in the tooth similar to the defects humans get for which we get fillings. If horses do not have regular dental check-ups sharp enamel

points and inconsistencies in chewing develop that can increase the risk of caries lesions and other issues such as diastema (gaps between teeth) and periodontal pocketing (erosions in the gum line). All of these problems can pre-dispose horses to fracturing and losing teeth. Caries lesions can be prevented to a degree by ensuring the horse is fed a very low sugar diet, then the other issues mentioned can often be prevented by regular dental correction. We would generally advise a veterinary dental assessment at least annually in all horses, then if / when age related problems are identified routine dentistry may be required every 6 or potentially every 3 months.

Regular exercise

Horses benefit most from consistent exercise. This means that you need to exercise your horse in a fairly even manner. Certainly, it is not unreasonable to occasionally go down the gallops on a horse who usually schools and hacks 4 – 5 times per week. But it is ill-advised to go to camp with a horse who has only been hacked once per week for the previous 6 months. Fitness needs to be maintained and built on both from the point of view of aerobic fitness (so that horses don’t get too hot or breathless doing harder work) and from the point of view of muscular strength (so that they avoid injury, tying up and muscular pain). Regardless of what discipline your horse competes at (or doesn’t compete at) it is best to vary work during training. Try to avoid repeatedly schooling on a circle as this is very difficult for the horse, but add in hacking work, pole work, ground work and ideally some faster work too. Doing one lunge session per week is a good way to get the horse moving without the weight of a rider and allowing them to stretch over their back – sound, comfortable horses should be able to walk, trot and canter on the lunge in a consistent circle, on the correct canter lead without multiple training aids. If your horse rushes, puts its head to the outside, struggles on one rein or has an inconsistent gait these may be early signs of pain or lameness.

Weight

Obesity is a big problem in both equine and human health. Both play a part in maintaining a fit and healthy teenage horse. As horses age, their metabolic rate can slow making weight gain more likely. Coupled with the increased risk of cushings disease,

(Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction – PPID) and any cumulative effects of a high sugar diet earlier in life, they are at significant risk of obesity and laminitis. Both of these conditions can be largely prevented with an appropriate diet and regular appropriate exercise. It is very important to measure horses’ weight, so that changes can be recognized – a weight tape is a good method at home. Although weight tapes may not be 100% accurate, they will tell you if your horse is losing or gaining weight. As mentioned above consistent exercise is key, but don’t forget in order for your horse to lose weight through exercise they need to be working reasonably hard. Ideally they should be doing periods of canter / gallop work where they are sweating when you have finished, hacking in walk is not strenuous enough to facilitate weight loss. Swimming is another way to work them hard without the concussive issues of hard ground.

Joints

As horses age, they become more prone to osteoarthritis; this is generally caused by wear and tear. Some horses develop osteoarthritis earlier in life than others, but most commonly we see issues in teenage horses and older. Osteoarthritis can vary in severity from a mild shortening of the stride when schooling all the way through to an inability to stand. All of the things already discussed in this article go some way to preventing or delaying the onset of osteoarthritis, but once issues develop rapid diagnosis and treatment help to maintain horses in work for longer. If your horse starts to struggle with things they previously found easy, or if your horse starts to display some undesirable behaviors it is often a sign of pain and discomfort which warrants a veterinary assessment. on a particular leg or on a circle, resistance to working on a soft contact, resentment of catching or tacking up, resentment of shoeing, or a reduction in rolling / lying down. Most osteoarthritic conditions can be managed for many years keeping horses’ pain free and in full work, but early and accurate diagnosis is essential.

Joint supplements can be administered to try and delay the onset of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin are the main ingredients of most supplements, with other anti-inflammatory products contained within the blend. In lab-based experiments, cartilage cells can be made fuller and healthier by the administration of joint supplements. However, horse-based trials are difficult to achieve. Nobody really knows how much of what is fed to a horse ends up in the joint space, and whether that has a long-term beneficial effect. Joint supplements are not known to be harmful and may be advantageous. It is essential to source a concentrated, contaminant free joint supplement; it is best to speak to your vet to get their opinion on the best products for your horse.

Tendons

As horses age their tendons naturally become stiffer and less elastic. This can predispose them to injury. As mentioned previously consistent, regular exercise to maintain appropriate fitness is essential to reduce the risk of injury. Poor foot balance also increases the risk of tendon injury, again linking back to good regular farriery as a preventative measure. In addition, cold hosing limbs after hard work is a good way of removing excess heat and inflammation from the tendons. The degree of lameness and swelling associated with tendon injury is quite variable, so it is a good idea to feel your horses’ legs regularly so that you will notice any subtle changes. As with any kind of injury, the earlier problems are detected the more easily they can be managed.

Feeding Ulcers - Fibre Beet

Supporting new beginnings, rehoming ex racehorses

What are ulcers?

In order to digest enzymes and facilitate fermentation in the hind gut in horses, who are naturally trickle feeders, hydrochloric acid is constantly secreted by the stomach. To protect the stomach lining from this acid, there are naturally occurring specialised cells that produce a mucus lining in at least the lower half of the stomach. If a horse is exercised on an empty stomach, this acid can sometimes slosh up the sides of the stomach wall, creating lesions. Stressors can also cause a disruption to normal gastric functioning including stabling, transportation and being in unfamiliar surroundings. If acid penetrates the mucus, or there is not enough protective mucus available, this can result in acid burns, lesions and then ulceration. The only way to definitively tell that a horse has ulcers is for a vet to perform a gastroscopy, more commonly known as ‘scoping’.

Scoping Trials

To try to understand ulcers better, British Horse Feeds (BHF) commissioned scoping trials with New Beginnings, a charity in Malton, Yorkshire. In their own words, ‘The mission of New Beginnings is to provide a safe and secure environment where former racehorses can adjust and be re-trained for their second career following racing.’

Six Thoroughbreds were chosen to be scoped as part of the trial that lasted 14 months, based on whether they were thought to be at risk of ulcers. These horses were investigated within weeks of being brought into New Beginnings and subsequently at 2-3 monthly intervals. Despite the horse’s varied backgrounds, their feeding regimes were all based on grazing/hay and fibre feeds. Either immediately before, or after being scoped, each of the horses were introduced to Fibre-Beet from BHF.

Feeding for ulcers

Feeding fibre-based foods helps to soak up the hydrochloric acid secreted by the stomach, whereas cereal based feeds do not have this ability. It is thought that these latter feeds encourage bacteria that thrive on starch and that cause lactic acid to build up.

The results of the scoping trial with New Beginnings were very positive, and the conclusion was

that although BHF’s Fibre-Beet does not medicate ulcers, it does provide physiological and physical characteristics that help support normal gastric conditions. Fibre-Beet has been awarded the BETA feed approval mark for horses prone to gastric ulcers as it contains components such as pectins and emulsifiers that support the mucosal lining in the stomach and has shown to be effective at binding or ‘soaking up’ the acid. Gastric ulcers are not obvious from the outside, and scoping is not an option for a lot of people; so, introducing Fibre-Beet, alongside a fibre-based diet, can give you peace of mind.

Fibre-Beet is a great option for feeding horses with confirmed or suspected ulcers due to its low levels of starch (3%) and sugar (5%). This soaked mash can also be used to supplement forage and thanks to its palatability and high digestible energy content is great for maintaining condition. When fed alongside a good balancer and quality forage, for a horse in light work, this is enough for a fully balanced diet.

Thoroughbred Census launched by British Racing’s Horse Welfare Board and Hartpury University

BritishRacing’s Horse Welfare Board is launching the first ever thoroughbred census in Great Britain, in collaboration with research experts at Hartpury University.

All owners of former racehorses are being asked to submit a completed census between 28 June – 31 December 2023. The census will help build an improved thoroughbred data bank about former racehorses and the lives they go on to lead.

The project’s primary objective is to help improve traceability of thoroughbreds after they have been retired from racing. With improved data, British Racing and its aftercare charity, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), can better support owners with access to educational resources and routes to compete if desired, as well as continue to build informed and helpful communities.

Improved data at this stage of a thoroughbred’s life can also help the Horse Welfare Board and RoR improve and adapt welfare initiatives and will, most importantly, enable fast and effective contact in the event of an equine disease outbreak.

The census will request information on each horse’s equine identification document (passport) number, microchip number, age, current residence, second career, and more to provide a robust view of the 2023 British retired racehorse population.

The six-month census has been launched in partnership with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), British Racing’s official aftercare charity, funded by the Racing Foundation, and is supported by World Horse Welfare and Weatherbys General Stud Book.

Helena Flynn, Programme Director, Horse Welfare Board, said: “Improving the traceability of thoroughbreds after they retire from racing is a fundamental part of the Horse Welfare Board’s five-year welfare strategy. The launch of this census is a significant project to help increase the depth, quality, and volume of data about thoroughbreds at this important stage of their lives.

“Just as importantly, this campaign will help us talk about responsible ownership and

the critical part every thoroughbred owner plays in ensuring their equine identification document (passport) is up to date. We are delighted to be working with Hartpury University on the census and hope that between us we can encourage as many owners as possible to participate.”

The primary source of traceability for all horses in Great Britain is the equine identification document (passport), which new owners of any horse are required to update within 30 days of new ownership. During their racing careers this information is meticulously maintained with the Weatherbys General Stud Book via breeders, owners, and trainers.

However, data for former racehorses reduces significantly when they go into private ownership after their first step out of racing, with general equine identification document (passport) compliance at an average of 20% across the equestrian world. The reasons for this are presumed to be a lack of understanding of the importance of this step, confusion on costs, the desire to hold on to the document after a horse has died and general apathy to engage in the process.

As a result, an additional objective of the census will be to communicate to private owners and encourage them to take action, to check their horse’s equine identification document (passport) and if needed, to get it updated. At the same time, owners of horses who were registered with a licenced British trainer in their past will be encouraged to register their horse for free with Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

The ‘social licence’ for the use of horses in sport is under increasing scrutiny and what happens to former racehorses after they retire from racing is identified as a particular concern. This is a significant step towards ensuring thoroughbreds enjoy a healthy and caring existence during their lifetimes and will provide the racing industry with the relevant data to guide future decisions”.

RoR is a thriving community which provides thoroughbred owners with access to education, advice, and an established series of events to support the ongoing healthy, happy lives of former racehorses. By registering horses with RoR’s free membership option, owners can help racing ensure future traceability through its annual check on their horse’s status.

THE HOWDEN WAY ANNOUNCES NEW THOROUGHBRED AFTERCARE PROGRAMME

An exciting new addition to The Howden Way programme has been announced. A bespoke, Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme, will join the existing areas of The Howden Way, designed to give expert tuition and training to riders that take on former racehorses.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme will be run by British Eventing and sit alongside the existing areas of The Howden Way; The Howden Regional Training Academy, The Howden Talent Academy, The Howden Young Horse Academy and The Howden Way Young Horse Leagues.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme, within The Howden Way structure, will be specifically designed to assist riders from the initial point of taking on a horse leaving racing and transitioning to a riding horse. The programme will both encourage and assist those taking on a former racehorse by giving them the security of knowing they will have a comprehensive care programme wrapped around them.

The programme will encompass everything that riders will need to know from both caring for ex-racehorses in terms of their nutrition, routine and welfare needs through to their ridden retraining. It will sit alongside the existing resource and guidance provided by Retraining of Racehorses (RoR).

Coaching will be delivered by British Eventing Level 3 and above coaches who have gone through the Thoroughbred Aftercare standardisation programme and further supported with knowledge sharing from experts within their chosen field.

Whatever the season, forage (grass, hay or haylage) should always be the foundation of your horse’s diet. As our thoughts turn to autumn, this change in season can prove challenging for your horse’s delicate digestive system.

During spring, the grass grows rapidly, it stores more sugar than it needs for growth to enable the leaf to have the energy required to grow taller. Horses then consume the sugar as they graze. Later in the year, when the daylight and nighttime temperatures are more consistent and grass growth rates decrease, the plant uses up most of the sugar produced during the day each night.

Autumn can mean periods of wet and warm weather, ideal growing conditions for grass and when the shoots pop up, they are rich in sugars (fructose) – often referred to as the ‘Autumn Flush.’ When these sugars are passed in high quantities through your horse’s digestive tract, they can cause an imbalance of the microflora in the hindgut, resulting in associated acidosis. This form of acidosis of the hindgut is responsible for colic, laminitis, scouring and other unsavoury conditions.

Also, the change in season may mean a change in your horse’s feeding regime as you start to introduce hay into his diet if he has been out at grass all summer. Any sudden dietary change associated with the change in seasons is a common cause for digestive upset and potentially colic.

Research has indicated that the risk of colic is greater when a horse is changed to a new forage, like changing from summer grazing to preserved forage when going into autumn. Make any dietary changes very gradually over a period of at least two - three weeks to allow your horse’s gut microbes time to adjust. Starting to slowly introduce your horse’s winter-feeding regime during the autumn is a good way to help prevent digestive upset.

Qualified Master Saddler and Saddle Fitter, Helen Reader answers your Saddlery Questions

Q: My saddle is very old, but looks in good condition and my horse goes well in it. I have limited funds so don't want to replace it before I have to. How do I tell when it is time to replace it? Are there specific checks I can make?

A: A saddle that is well looked after can last for many years, however it is important to remember that you can’t see what is going on inside the saddle. Even if the leather and stitching all look good on the top there could be issues inside the saddle.

I would recommend that you have your saddle checked by a Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) Qualified Saddler or Master Saddler. Search the Society of Master Saddlers website, www.mastersaddlers.co.uk to find one that’s close to you. They will take the saddle apart and inspect the inside to check that the tree is sound, that no rivets are missing, and the head and gullet plates aren’t cracked.

They will also check that the webs (that the girth straps are attached to) haven’t become loose or frayed and that the flocking is smooth and level. Any issues they find and how to rectify them will be discussed with you and then a decision made if it is cost effective to repair the saddle or not.

If the saddle is structurally sound, then I would also recommend that you have the fit of the saddle checked by an SMS Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter (SMS QSF). The SMS recommend that you should have this done at least every six months. The fitter will ensure that the saddle is comfortable for both you and your horse; making any necessary adjustments to improve the fit.

With regards to checks that you can make yourself, regularly cleaning the saddle will enable you to continually assess the condition of the leather and stitching. If you are in any doubt

then have the saddle checked, repairs are usually easier if caught early. If left too long, then it may make the saddle unrepairable or at least not commercially viable to repair and a new saddle would be the only option.

The difference between a SMS Saddler and Saddle Fitter:

The terms Saddler and Saddle Fitter mean quite different things and can lead to some confusion. All SMS members are qualified within their category determined by which City & Guilds qualifications they hold.

A SMS Saddler is a craft member who makes and repairs saddlery, whereas a Saddle Fitter undertakes the fitting elements of the trade. Some members may be qualified in more than one category.
