here are many key considerations when feeding a horse during the winter months including supporting their ability to keep warm, maintaining good condition as well as keeping them hydrated. With prices of everything going up recently, a lot of owners are looking at how to get good value for money whilst also sticking to high quality feeds. Winter warming Horses have an innate ability to keep themselves warm through a process called thermoregulation. Although horses are likely to be doing less exercise and sweating less during winter, they burn off a lot of energy maintaining their core temperature. Therefore, as owners, we need to help them as much as possible with their diet to help keep them warm from the inside out. This is why feeds that are high in fermentable fibre are so important – super fibres are broken down and go through a fermentation process in the hind gut – a process which naturally creates warmth. In addition, as a treat for your horse, you could soak the mash in warm water, making it more appealing to eat and again helping them to maintain their body temperature as well as promoting hydration. Hydration Dehydration isn’t something that is naturally associated with winter – it’s something that riders and owners are more aware of during hot weather. However, during cold winter months, a horse’s water source is often very cold, if not frozen. This isn’t very appealing to horses, so they can become dehydrated simply from not wanting to drink. water, this is great way to add in more liquid to a horse’s diet. If your horse needs a bit more hydration, you can use more than the minimum recommended amount of water. In this article we will aim to tackle some common winter problems, and provide some top tips to avoid issues this winter. Paddock Management Wet and muddy paddocks can be difficult to manage through winter, however it is still important to regularly poo-pick during the winter to manage the parasite burden on the land. If enough land is available, rotating grazing to allow time for fields to recover can be a good way of preventing paddocks from becoming excessively poached and muddy, using the best draining and most sheltered fields for winter turnout is best. Alternatively, grass mats or similar can be useful for areas such as gateways or field shelters that are prone to getting particularly muddy. Water supplies in the field should be regularly checked, especially during freezing conditions to ensure ice is broken and no pipes are burst.

Feeding in the Winter It is important to ensure that the main feed source for equines is fibre/forage, where grass is limited in the winter this needs to be made up with hay/haylage or similar. Hay intake should be increased gradually to reduce the risk of impaction colic by suddenly increasing the amount of dry, long fibre intake.

Mud Fever Mud fever, or pastern dermatitis, is a common and frustrating condition to deal with. It is caused by an opportunistic bacteria that gets in via softened, wet or damaged skin. Mud fever presents as scabs and discharge on the lower legs, the legs can become swollen and it can be incredibly sore.

Ensuring adequate water intake during winter is extremely important to prevent impaction colic. Adding water to feeds and wetting hay can increase water intake. Horses can be reluctant to drink very cold water, so it is often useful where possible to add warm water to their bucket at feed times as they are also more likely to have a drink after eating. For horses that usually live out but have to be brought in during severe weather, it can be beneficial to offer

The best way to prevent mud fever is to allow the legs a chance to dry – this can be tricky for horses that live out 24/7, but having a dry area such as a well bedded field shelter or concrete yard to stand on can help. It is generally best to allow wet legs to dry and then brush mud off and check for scabs and signs of mud fever, if you have to wash the mud off you should dry the legs as well as possible and allow them to dry completely before turning back out again. Clipping excess hair off legs can make it easier to clean and dry the legs, especially for horse that are in work. When treating mud fever, it is important to have somewhere clean and dry to keep the horse while the scabs heal, we would usually suggest bathing the scabs in warm antiseptic wash and gently removing any loose scabs before drying the legs thoroughly and applying a moisturizing, antiseptic cream as suggested by your vet. The horse should ideally remain out of the mud until the area is healed. Rugging Which rugs to use is a frequently asked question, this is always very individual to each horse. It depends on many factors such as whether the horse is clipped, the body condition, fitness and workload, amount of shelter available, and the horse’s own comfort levels. When rugging it is important to consider that the horse’s thermal neutral zone (temperature range whereby the horse does not have to use any energy to keep warm) is approximately 5-25°C, so just because you feel cold your horse may not! Over rugging can be as uncomfortable and detrimental to a horse as under rugging. As a general rule, if you put your hand under your horse’s rug they should feel warm, not hot and they should not be sweating.

these horses are still checked on twice a day, that rugs are removed to check for rubs or injuries. Stabled horses that may have reduced turnout in the winter should have regular exercise, even if it is not ridden work.

aser therapy is widely used in human and veterinary medicine for a range of purposes, but what is a laser and how does it work? ‘Laser’ is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation – a laser is a device that uses an energy source to produce packets of light energy called photons, which are then amplified by a kind of domino effect before being focused into a light beam. The power and wavelength of the light or laser beam depend on the mechanism used by that specific device to amplify its photon production, and in turn determine the effects the laser beam will have on different body tissues.

Lasers are grouped into classes, which broadly describe how dangerous they have the potential to be. Examples we see every day include class 2 lasers, such as the scanners at a shop checkout. These are hazardous if you deliberately stare into them, but a reflection of the beam is not damaging. Laser pointers are mostly class 3R – they cannot burn the skin and are not a fire hazard, but will damage the eye if viewed for too long. Therapeutic lasers are mostly class 3B

or class 4. These have the potential to damage eyesight and so protective goggles must be worn when using these devices. Class 4 lasers also include surgical laser machines. In everyday terms, we sometimes refer to surgical lasers as ‘hot’ lasers, and to lasers used for non-surgical therapies as ‘cold’ lasers. Laser surgery Using a laser instead of a scalpel in surgery can be useful for several reasons. A laser can cut without touching the tissue it is cutting, so avoids spreading cancerous or infected cells around an operation site. The heat of the laser also helps to seal small blood vessels. The heat is particularly useful to us in removing sarcoids, as the laser beam can be used to cauterise the site and kill any remaining tissue that might be too small to see. Photobiomodulation effects Photobiomodulation means the alteration (modulation) of biological processes by light, and can be a metabolic or a thermal effect. Laser treatment also has an antibacterial effect, which can be very useful in combating antibiotic resistance. What conditions can laser be used to treat? It’s a long list! Wounds, tendon and ligament injuries, muscle spasm and pain, muscle damage, haematomas, arthritis, itchy skin… Laser therapy has the advantage of being safe, easily tailored to each patient’s individual requirements, portable, non-invasive and painless. Caring for your Golden Oldie

iven that horses are living much longer – sometimes into their 50’s – it shows that with the right care and nutrition, our four-legged friends could be our companions for many years to come. Some key considerations for your older horse might be: • Dental health – how this affects their diet • Joint health – balancing turnout time to keep them moving • Eye health – do they feel safer with other horses around them if their sight has deteriorated? • Temperature regulation – are they able to keep their temperature consistent? • Nutritional support – do they need some supplements to help systems within the body that might not be operating optimally anymore? Diet can play a big part in many of those considerations, for example, feeding a high fibre diet will promote hind gut fermentation, which in turn will warm the horse from the inside out. In addition, feeding something like a soaked mash might be beneficial to a horse whose painful teeth have reduced their appetite. When it comes to joint health, prevention is certainly better than cure as the effects of a disease such as arthritis, simply cannot be reversed. Horses of any age can be affected by arthritis; however, it is more common amongst older horses. This is because arthritis is, in effect, the result of wear and tear in joints. Between cartilage-capped bone is joint fluid, which over time can reduce, leading to friction. This friction causes inflammation and as a result, damage to the cartilage, and eventually, the bone. Naturally, older horses experience more inflammation due to oxidative stress which is an imbalance in the ratio of oxidants to antioxidants within the horse’s body. Degradation and weakening of the joints, glucose dysfunctions such as EMS, obesity and lowered immunity can all be other factors in arthritis which need to be considered when you are looking at the overall health of your older horse. Common Winter Ailments

n this issue, Robinson Animal Healthcare offer advice on common winter ailments and first aid kit maintenance to ensure you have everything you need in an emergency. There are a number of common ailments that are more prevalent during the winter months as fields turn to mud baths and our horses are forced to spend longer periods in the stable. Hoof Abscesses

The best form of treatment for mud fever is taking steps to prevent the condition in the first place by keeping your horse in dry conditions and allowing mud to dry before brushing off instead of constantly washing the legs. If your horse develops mud fever, wash any affected areas with an antibacterial wash, taking care to dry the legs properly. Always call your vet if the limb is swollen, painful or your horse is lame.

First Aid Kit Maintenance Maintaining your first aid kit is essential to be able to act quickly in the event of an emergency, especially in winter when there never seems to be enough hours in the day. This means making sure your kit is always stocked up and ensuring it is stored in an appropriate way. Your first aid kit should be clearly labelled making it easily identifiable to everyone on the yard and be stored in an accessible place and returned to its designated spot after every use.

Hoof abscesses are more common during winter as wet weather causes the feet to become softer, making it easier for dirt or foreign objects to penetrate the foot. Infection then rapidly develops, with a build-up of pus within the confines of the hoof, which is extremely painful for the horse.

Thrush During winter many horses are forced to spend long hours in the stable or in water logged, muddy turnout. These constantly wet conditions can predispose some horses to thrush, a bacterial infection of the frog which is categorised by a smelly discharge or soft spots.

A vet or farrier will need to locate the abscess and drain the pus. Once the pus has been drained the foot must be cleaned, before applying a hot wet poultice.

Appropriate stable management and picking your horse’s feet out daily is the best way to prevent thrush.

It is important to regularly check and dispose of any products that have reached their use-by-date, regardless of whether they have been used or not.

To treat thrush, ask your farrier to remove all the diseased tissue before cleansing the area thoroughly with 10 parts warm water (ideally boiled first) to one part hydrogen peroxide before applying a hot wet poultice to the area, changing daily. After three applications the poultice may

Mud Fever

Mud fever is caused by chronic wetting of skin on distal limb. Rain, mud and frequent washing off of mud, weakens the skins normal defence, therefore allowing infection to penetrate. 16
