NEW REDWINGS ANIMATION URGES SUPPORT FOR RESCUED PONIES THIS CHRISTMAS

edwings Horse Sanctuary has launched its latest fundraising animation, voiced once again by Stephen Fry. Last year, the charity released a short animation narrated by the popular broadcaster telling the story of a long-term Sanctuary resident, blind Clydesdale horse Boo, which went on to be viewed by over 225,000 people online. This year’s animation takes supporters back to the beginnings of Redwings in 1984 and how it has transformed into a national charity caring for more than 1,500 rescued horses and donkeys at its sites every day. The new uvex exxential II MIPS sets new benchmarks in terms of lightness, comfort for the rider and safety. For the ﬁrst time ever, the sporty all-rounder uses the height-adjustable MultiDirectional Impact Protection System (MIPS), which provides additional protection against rotational forces in the event of a side or oblique impact. Enjoy the ultimate in safety with the uvex exxential II MIPS combining the lightweight characteristics of an inmould helmet with the tried and tested Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. The idea behind MIPS, which was developed in Sweden, is to protect the human brain against rotational movements in an accident. To achieve this, a movable second shell is ﬁtted inside the uvex exxential II MIPS between the inner padding and outer shell of the helmet. It sits directly on the head and can be adjusted to obtain the optimum setting for height and width. If the rider lands at an angle in a fall, the rotational force created is not transferred to the head, but instead is dissipated by the motion of the MIPS inner shell.

What’s more, the ergonomic helmet design with its low-cut helmet shell guarantees extra impact protection at the rear. One really smart feature is the ponytail cut-out, which makes the helmet considerably more comfortable for riders with long hair. When falling, the human brain can be exposed to strong rotational movements due to oblique impact. The innovative, height adjustable MIPS (MultiDirectional Impact Protection System) cage-built into a uvex riding helmet for the ﬁrst time ever-offers extensive protection. FOOT BALANCE

he phrase “no foot, no horse” will be a familiar one to many, and in this article we will discuss the the importance of foot balance and why it is so important in maintaining soundness in our horses. Foot balance refers to the size and shape of the equine foot, and how it relates to and functions with both the appendicular skeleton and the ground. It is not only to do with the appearance of the standing and lifted foot, but how the horse’s feet land, bear weight, and break over when moving. Imbalance can have both acute and chronic effects. Initially, it alters the way the foot lands and loads, and alters the relationship of the foot with the rest of the limb. As more chronic changes occur, imbalance can cause the hoof to change shape, via uneven forces going through the foot, and altered hoof growth patterns. Lameness occurs when the repetitive stresses induced by the imbalance become enough to cause injury.

Dorsopalmar (forelimbs) or dorsoplantar (hindlimbs) imbalance: Viewed from the side with the horse standing square, a horse’s foot should have a straight hoof-pastern axis, with the forefeet hoof walls at 45-55 degrees to the floor and the hind feet hoof walls at 50-55 degrees. The heels should be, as much as possible, parallel to the hoof wall. Broken forward: When the angle of the foot to the floor is greater than that of the pastern to the floor. This often results in upright, or boxy feet. This may be conformational in nature, or may be indicative of a problem such as tendon contracture or prolonged chronic lameness.

Broken back: When the angle of the foot to the floor is less than that of the pastern to the floor. These horses often have long toes and collapsed heels, which predisposes them to injury of the ligaments and tendons running down the back of the limb. Increased stress to the navicular bone has also been reported. Mediolateral imbalance: Viewed from the front with the horse standing square, the coronary band should be parallel to the floor and the horse’s weight should be borne evenly down through the foot. Picking up the foot and comparing it to the angle of the raised limb can also indicate whether a horse has a mediolateral imbalance. Conformational abnormalities of the limb can predispose to this type of imbalance. If a horse’s imbalance

or conformation means that it lands on either the medial or lateral wall ﬁrst, the weight is not borne evenly down through the limb, and abnormal loading of the joints and ligaments in the foot occurs, predisposing them to injury.

Treatment: Some horses may work soundly with a degree of foot imbalance for long periods of time, depending on their use, although in others, lameness may occur. Predisposition to re-injury may exist, which is why it is important to maintain the best possible foot balance for your horse. Combatting foot imbalance problems can be challenging and requires excellent teamwork between your vet and farrier and ongoing monitoring. X-rays are very helpful in determining bone position relative to the external foot and can be used as a guide for remedial

farriery, which is extremely important in the management of these cases. Treatment of foot imbalance usually involves repeat trimming over time to reduce the imbalance as much as is possible, to ensure even distribution of force as the foot lands. Many horses beneﬁt from a therapeutic shoe designed to support their particular imbalance, and this can drastically increase the horse’s performance ability. If you have any concerns about your horse’s foot balance it is a good idea to speak to your vet. The farrier and vet can work with you to improve the situation and try to prevent further problems arising.

HEN seven-year-old Lusitano, Jermana broke into the feed room she managed to guzzle feed for 45 minutes leaving herself bloated and facing an attack of laminitis. have been taking advantage that many of the horses have been on their end of season holidays, meaning I have a little more free time for sociable things. We have been lucky to have many local Heythrop Hunt meets around us the last few Thursdays, which have been great to take my gorgeous stallion, Interlaken W, to for some winter fun. Accompanied by my friend Saskia, we have enjoyed catching up with lots of friends, galloping around the countryside and a few pub g stops on the hack home after 2nd horses! The farmers Bloodhounds have also been just down the road from us, so on a sunny j Sunday afternoon we joined them too. Some

impressive hedge hopping and great jumping around our local estates; it’s safe to say both the horses and riders had a great time. Depending on the horse, I think hunting is a great education for the young ones. They get to see plenty and jump all sorts of timber in all sorts of ground conditions and with the British weather being so unpredictable, as it has been in previous years, it’s a great opportunity to practice this! Interlaken W, aka Lanikin really does love his hunting days out; he is beautifully behaved and it’s great to be able to enjoy him, not only eventing but doing a variety of other things. CV – eventing, showjumping, team chasing, hunting and side saddle…. whatever next?!?! The young horses have been progressing well over the last few weeks. 4yo CHF Captain Jacob really is learning his job. A few British Showjumping outings, and more recently Arena Eventing at Dallas Burston’s. A very different kind of environment to what he is used to, but he took it all in his stride. A lovely showjumping round in the 90cm course followed by a clear XC over some very new fences to him. Showing off his scope at every opportunity and increasingly adding to the excitement of his future plans. I love working with him, still green but so keen to learn and try hard. My own Chanuck Z, a young stallion I bought inn the year, had his summer holiday and now begins a little more regular work. Still holding

off from doing too much as he is still only a rising 4yo. He is learning an education in a very relaxed atmosphere and non-intense way. It’s very much a waiting game for him as I’m conscious of not doing too much too soon at a young age. So, plenty of field time and chilling for him. Winter is always a fun time for catching up with friends that I haven’t seen in the busy event season, and what better place than the odd hunt ball or two… The Heythrop most recently and it certainly did not disappoint. It was time to ditch the breeches and put on the pretty dresses, make up and dance till the early hours. There were certainly a few sore heads on the Sunday morning, but what a great night with my very special friends! With Christmas fast approaching and every other song on the radio being a Christmas one at that… even though it’s still November! The horses are all in from their holidays and beginning their walk work before they go out for showjumping and dressage fun over the winter in the build up to the start of the season In March. It’s hard to believe in four months it will be 2022 eventing time! I’ve got a really exciting string for next year and look forward to working with each and everyone of them over the next few months, plenty of practice and fine tuning to make sure we are fully prepared for what 2022 has instore for us! I hope everyone enjoys the cold spell of winter and let’s hope for not too much rain or snow, as we all know combined with horses this is never fun!!

FARMERS BLOODHOUND MEET AT OVER WORTON ON SUNDAY 21ST NOVEMBER Report by Heather Moodie (Field Master), Photos by Paul Buddin

3 horses and riders assembled on the 21st of November on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the gorgeous home of Mr and Mrs Schuster in Over Worton. Our kind hosts provided a warm welcome, a drink, some sausage rolls and cake. Then we set off following our huntsman, Oscar Wood and his amateur whips Arran Fearn and Dave Pratley and five couple of hounds across gorgeous Heythrop countryside. This line brought us over several nice hunt jumps on great going across the Schusters land. We crossed the first road and hunted along the brook onto land owned by the Wilson family. There was the first big fence of the day a metal gate in the tree line. Those preferring an alternative route could still watch the fun unfold. Crossing the Worton Road and on again to more rails of varying heights and the first big hedge by Seagraves cover. Which was looking rather upright and woolly! For those who attempted it rode very well with lots of cheers of excitement. There was an alternative rail for those who wanted a smaller option. Anna Hall kindly took the people who didn’t want to jump around another way. A long run along the bridle path brought us to the end of the first line and a welcome breather. After 30 minutes the hounds were off again and onto the Barton Abbey estate and gorgeous grassland. A rather large drop hedge was waiting for us as well as our photographer Paul Buddin. We came out on the other side of the estate and past the church. After several rails and a brook crossing, we finished the second line and everyone’s spirits were high. The start of the third and final line took us back across Mrs Ballards land. We were then treated to some fun across Ben Lay’s infamous hedges. My fellow field master took anyone who wasn’t so keen on a slightly less taxing route. It is always lovely to pull up at the end of these hedges having had a great ride. There was only one loose horse and no harm done although Rupert Checkly and Molly Paxford did have to ride some way to catch him! A kind loop over some smaller fences to finish the day led us back to the meet. Bee Buddin kindly got the urn going and Ruperts new BBQ was a winner. Although I am dubious about Ruperts BBQing abilities! Jenny Barnes apple bake was delicious. Everyone enjoyed a friendly tea and run down of the day.

Q A

uestion: Which straps should I attach my girth to?

nswer: The Society of Master Saddlers replies: This is a common question especially as saddles now can have up to five girth straps each side which makes it confusing for the rider. Traditionally there would be only three girth straps. One on a narrow web just behind the front arch of the tree and then a further two both stitched onto the same wider web set behind the first web. However, over the years things have changed and now there are more options including a point strap, which is attached to the point at the front of the tree and a balance web which is attached to the back of the tree, often by means of a v-web system. The v-web system allows the girth strap to find its own centre and not pull the saddle forwards. These additional girth strap positions allow your Society of Master Saddlers Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter (SMS RQSF) to assess which girth straps to use to achieve the best fit. The girth

straps must not be used to make an ill-fitting saddle stay in place, they are used to refine the fit and help with stability of the saddle. When the saddle is placed in the correct position on the horse, the most suitable girth straps will lay vertically in line with the girth groove and therefore the girth. Ideally the girthing arrangement will help to distribute the pull of the girth over a wider area and give better stability of the saddle. If that line is not vertical and then the saddle will move forwards or backwards to achieve that vertical line and in turn will move the saddle either forwards onto the shoulders or backwards on to the lumber region. Neither of these options are desirable and will cause the horse discomfort and possibly pain. The point strap is used if the saddle tends to slip forwards, however by using the point strap it can pull the front of the saddle down and make the back lift, move and bounce. Generally, a balance strap would also be used when using the point strap to support the back of the saddle. The balance strap can also be used to prevent saddle slip, but only if the cause of the saddle slip has been identified and can’t be corrected, eg. The rider has an injury which means that they ride twisted to one side and pull the saddle across with them. Then the balance strap can be used one side to support the saddle and prevent it from twisting, just like a balance strap is used on a side saddle to support the saddle on the side without the rider’s legs. Your SMS RQSF will select the girth straps that they feel are most suitable after assessing the saddle on the horse and looking at the line of the girth groove. You will then be asked to ride in the saddle to make sure that the saddle doesn’t move, is balanced and that both you and the horse are comfortable in the saddle. If the saddle is used for jumping, then you will be asked to jump a fence or two. Whilst you are riding the SMS RQSF will be assessing the saddle on the horse, the horse’s way of going and your position and balance. Depending upon what they observe they may change the girthing arrangement and then ask you to ride again, so that they can reassess everything. Once they are happy with the girthing arrangement then they will explain to you which girth straps you need to use for your horse and why.
