FREEonline&inprint ‘VINTAGE TRACTORS, MACHINERY & SO MUCH MORE!’

And, here we are, fast approaching the end of 2022! How did that happen?

With limited daylight and wet day after wet day, it’s a pretty grim at the moment. Going to print, is a good excuse to huddle up in the warm! We were very lucky though, in that the dry weather gave us a much lengthened summer, which bodes well for many of the autumn events. On 24th September, partner Robin, Mother ‘Dodd’ and myself loaded up the camper van and made the short trip to to Shifford Manor Farm, Standlake, Oxfordshire. Not for a camp out, but for a trade stand at F.F.F. & B. Ploughing Match & Country Show. Although nicely bright and dry, it was the day that autumn kicked in, resulting in a scout around the many stalls, to purchase a hat to cover my much chilled ears! It was, as always, a lovely event. There was so much to see and we met so many lovely people who visited our stand.

Many of you will have headed up to the National Ploughing Championships. What an amazing venue, Chatsworth was. Kenny Wharton was there and took some lovely photos. Check out the back cover of this issue; my brother, Charlie ploughing at the Nationals with his Trusty. Next year, the Championships head to Bishops Lydeard in Somerset.

Next issue will see the return of our pull-out year planner. We have a few remaining advertising spaces to sell around the calendar. These start from £60+vat. Please email advertising@vintagescene.co.uk or call 01295 404099 if you would like to book a space.

Well, all that is left is to thank you all for your support throughout 2022, and to wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Till next time, see you in January, Heather

KeEping up with the others

Ihappened to be chatting with our Ferguson Club area representative, John Selley, recently about my Ferguson TEA20 tractor and also about my other passion, my MGB GTV8 race car. Although I had some doubts that the MG would be of interest to Vintage Scene readers, John has asked me to write a few words about these two apparently opposite interests.

I purchased the TEA 20 as a semi-derelict tractor from Scotland several years ago, and have since restored it to a respectable, usable condition. With the help of the Ferguson Club I have been able to register it for road use with an age related registration.

One of the attractions for me of restoring old tractors is that the issue of rust is far less of a problem than say, an old classic car for instance. What little 'bodywork' there is on a TEA 20 is entirely 'bolt on' so that every panel can be removed, and restored or replaced, and then bolted on again.

My tractor is by no means a concours show queen, but it is reliable and presentable, and I enjoy using it on tractor runs and occasional shopping trips! John has very kindly been able to help me with one or two parts I needed for the restoration. I was keen to retain its 1949 originality as much as possible, but for practical reasons I have changed it to a 12 volt system, and have changed the PTO drive to the more useful one and three eighths spline shaft to enable the use of modern PTO equipment. It will enable grass cutting and hopefully, at some time in the future, some light rotovating with, of course, the use of an overrun PTO shaft link. Neither of these slight changes detract from the appearance of the tractor. With originality in mind, I am currently preparing an old pair of 'correct' 19 inch front wheels for the tractor. It is currently on part worn grass rear tyres, which are of a slightly smaller diameter than V ribbed field tyres, and I found that on tractor runs the top speed is therefore slightly reduced, sometimes making it difficult to keep up with the others!

Keeping up with the others is of course also the name of the game for the 1972 MGV8. I built the car approximately fifteen years ago, on a tight budget, as a circuit racing car to take part in classic sports car events. I

managed to keep the car road legal, which has proved very useful for testing certain aspects of developments and changes over the years, without the expense of always having to hire testing time at race circuits.

The car currently has a 3.9 engine, originally a Rover SD1 Vitesse block, bored out, but I have put together a new 4.6 engine, originally from a Range Rover, which is just waiting to go in.

Whilst at first appearing to be at the opposite end of the technical spectrum, the MG really isn't that much different to the tractor in terms of engineering simplicity. Both vehicles are comparatively old school, and easy to work on, and neither one requires much in the way of specialist tools and equipment. Consequently, they are both, in their separate ways, a joy to tinker with and maintain. They are both reasonably inexpensive to work on, but unfortunately motor racing entry fees and the price of race tyres, for example, has rocketed over the years and consequently the privateer entrant is gradually getting ousted from the sport.

Fittingly for a tractor magazine, this brings me back to my trusty TEA20. I still enjoy driving it,and tinkering with it, and if anyone is looking for a relatively simple and rewarding restoration project, I can think of nothing better than choosing a good old Ferguson T20.

FarewelL Beauty

Saturday 15th October saw the end of an era for the well-known ploughing team ‘Prince and Beauty’, with the loss of ‘Beauty’ at age 22.

Bought as ‘Ruskington Dark Diamond’ from Ruskington Shires by my father John Taylor, as a gangly two year old, she was renamed ‘Beauty’ and went on to grow into an 18 hand, strong working Shire.

‘Beauty’ went on to plough hundreds of ploughing matches during her lifetime, for both my father and myself as a furrow horse, often finishing alone, calmly and steadily, as was her nature. She was never what people would call ‘mareish’.

Over the years, as well as ploughing, she was shown in hand, both on her own and also as a pair, often winning matched and moving.

At home, and also at working demonstrations, ‘Beauty’ has pulled a variety of implements such as mowers, harrows, carts and notably a restored furniture van to Retford Museum.

One of the family memories which we all cherish would be her leading my father into the crematorium, along with ‘Prince’, for his last journey behind them and then a couple of weeks later paired again on the dray, to take my father’s ashes to the wood near his former home.

‘Beauty’ will be greatly missed by our family, but also

leaves hundreds of great memories of a working shire team and companion. RIP ‘Beauty’ old lass.

Le Mongrel

Just one more. What harm can one more do? I’ll buy one more and then I’ll have enough; I won’t need any more, then I’ll stop…

Some will know exactly what this means, they are the ones wearing a slightly guilty expression, but for those who have yet to experience this syndrome, yet to be studied by the medical or psychiatric professions, imagine yourselves to be in the following situation. You are strolling among the kennels at your local dog pound. You have no intention of going home with a new four-legged friend but you start to feel a dozen pairs of eyes following your every step. You may resist the urge to look into those pleading eyes, but your curiosity takes over and before long you have convinced yourself that another dog would be a good idea; how could it not be a good idea. Soon it makes perfect sense (in your own mind), all that remains is to choose the perfect dog. The Irish Setter with its sleek coat of vibrant colour and graceful movement is the stylish option or maybe the Border Collie with its intelligence and confidence; but who wants to risk being outsmarted by a dog? Then at the end of the row you find the one that everyone else has walked right past. It’s just a plain old mongrel; bits of this and bits of that; no pedigree at all but it’s just what you were looking for!

Geoffrey and Gareth Mark have a few interesting things in their shed including a pair of Ford Model T motors, which graced the pages of The Vintage Scene in the July/August issue last year and with pedigree stretching back to the pioneering age of motoring they would be welcome in any collection, but it’s Henry Ford’s contribution to early twentieth century agriculture which is the subject of this visit to their yard.

Having grown up on a farm, Ford knew all too well the hardship and toil which were the lot of his forefathers and he set about reducing the drudgery on farms around the world, by introducing a new level of mechanisation and, after much experimentation and development, in 1917 he introduced his new Fordson Model F tractor. Most of the early, primitive tractors such as the International Harvester Titan and the Waterloo Boy were heavy, cumbersome contraptions with the engine, the transmission and the steering mounted to a separate chassis but Ford

approached his design with a radical new concept, whereby these individual components were bolted together to form an integral chassis known as unitary construction. Production began in his modern, efficient plant at Dearborn, Michigan with the new tractor offered at a very competitive price and soon the Model F came to the attention of the British Board of Agriculture, who were looking for a way to increase domestic food production, at a time when both horses and men were needed on the battlefields of France and Belgium. The Fordson was the perfect solution to their problem and soon 6,000 new tractors were on their way across the Atlantic.

Well suited to smaller farms, with proven reliability and solid performance in the field, the new tractor was well received and Ford took the decision to build a new tractor factory to supply the growing European market, not in England, but in Cork, Ireland, the home town of his grandfather. The production facility opened in 1919 with just 303 tractors built in the first year but over the next 13 years another 39,000 tractors drove out of the factory, onto the adjoining docks and made their way to Britain and the continent. It is the most straightforward sea journey from Cork to Cherbourg, a journey made by the very tractor which you see on these pages, one of those first 300 to leave Ireland.

Over the years the old-timer has been modified to the extent that it is almost unrecognisable as a Fordson, but it is that unknown history which caught Geoffrey’s imagination, “Like a lot of the early, more primitive machines, there was only so much life in the Fordson’s TVO engine, so it’s not surprising that the tractor has had a transplant at some stage. What makes it really interesting is the type of engine that was used to keep the tractor going.”

The throttle control doesn’t appear to have a Fordson part number.

The original Fordson TVO lump has been replaced by a diesel two-stroke engine.

It has all the survival instincts of a mongrel.
8 December 2022 call 01295 404099 to advertise or email advertising@vintagescene.co.uk
How could you not love an old dog like that?

The replacement engine is a CLM (Compagnie Lilloise de Moteurs) diesel two-stroke of modular design which produced 11hp per cylinder and since this engine is a twin, its power output would have been 22hp, about the same as the original Fordson TVO lump. Built under licence from Junkers in Germany, this intriguing piece of engineering has some very interesting features. Instead of the traditional crankcase induction associated with a two-stroke, there are two pistons per cylinder. The lower piston is connected to the crankshaft in the traditional manner, but the upper piston is connected to its own crankshaft which operates in conjunction with the lower crank via two conrods, which are arranged along the outside of the cylinder and in a gallery passing through the transfer ports. As the pistons converge on the combustion chamber, the air charge is compressed ready for the injection of fuel. At the same time, in the void above the upper piston the pressure is reduced, opening an atmospheric valve which allows the next air charge to enter in readiness for the next stroke. As the injector introduces the atomised fuel and the burn takes place between the pistons, they separate, spinning the crank shafts, the lower piston exposes the exhaust port as the upper unveils the transfer port, forcing the next charge down into the combustion chamber and the cycle begins again. There are a lot of simultaneous operations going on so, as you might expect, when it fires into life it all sounds a bit frantic, demanding attention in a way that the original 4 cylinder, four-stroke Fordson engine never could. This old mongrel has an unmistakeable bark.

The modifications don’t end with the engine. Because of the hitch mechanism, Geoffrey believes that the tractor was used for some sort of haulage operation, “I was told that it had been used to pull a four wheeled dolly trailer, which would explain the hitch mechanism and the brake modifications. The standard Fordson brakes operated on the transmission, but the back axle of this tractor has been modified to take drum brakes, which explains why the rear wheels had been changed. As well as the changes to the tractor’s own brakes, the PTO belt pulley shaft was used to cobble up a trailer braking mechanism. The pulley has been replaced by a bevel drive which, through a hand-operated clutch lever, turns a shaft which operates

the drum above the hitch. There was a steel cable attached to the drum, which pulled on the trailer brakes and by leaning on the hand clutch lever the drum turned and kept the trailer behind the tractor when going down hill. At the other end of the drum shaft there is even a band brake, which could be tightened to act as a trailer handbrake.” Since the French registration indicates that the tractor came from the Puy-de-Dôme region in the mountainous Massif Central, this adaption allowed the driver to enjoy his lunch in his favourite hostelry, regardless of whether it was at the top of the mountain, half way up or half way down.

At the front there are further modifications. The tombstone belongs to the CLM engine, so the front axle is a hybrid affair, using some Fordson parts and other parts of unknown pedigree, but most noticeable is the electric starter which bolts directly to the crank. With all the hallmarks of a farmer’s modification the starter is mounted onto an outrigged frame which also acts as a support for those impressive Cibié headlamps possibly robbed from an old Citroёn Traction Avant. The frame also carries a starting handle, for those brave enough to coax the old dog into life by more traditional means.

Geoffrey and Gareth have two more Fordson Standards, one they have restored to its original spec, while the other has had the TVO engine replaced by a Ford D Series lorry engine, but when it comes to character, the old French mongrel wins every time. As Gareth says, “It looks a complete lash-up but that’s part of its charm.”

Gareth (L) and Geoffrey are a lively characters, “it’s the tired old mongrel that sometimes needs a sniff of easy start.” A continental cobbled-up coupling. The assisted braking system takes its power from the belt pulley shaft.

All Work & No Play!

Ican't believe it has been two full years since I started the big Lister build, and I’m now writing my 10th article for The Vintage Scene. This isn’t my normal sort of diary entry, but I haven’t been in the barn for a while because this is my last year at Primary school and I have to prepare for my 11+ exam. So for a while, there will be no spannering done.

Since I started I have learned how a magneto works, how a four-stroke and two-stroke engine works, I now know how to identify certain tractors and cars and I’m learning about their history. I have learned a lot about the vintage world by watching YouTube, classic car programs on the TV but mostly by asking my dad. I like to watch Henry Cole, Sam Love grove, Allen Millyard and Skid, and all their fooling around. I can’t wait for the next series of Junk and Disorderly. In the wonderful world of ‘Wheeler Dealers’ Mike and Edd show how to restore old cars and how to have fun with the restored cars, like they did when they went for a picnic in their Almond Green Morris Minor ‘Woody’. I’ve been learning about the Victorian age at school, so watching Fred Dibnah helps as I learn about the engineering progress that was made in the 1800s. Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn also explain life in different times and what it was like during wartime, especially how it affected farming

Now it gets to the interesting part. I have seen, I am sure, well over 100 vehicles at shows and whatnot, but here I list only a few of my favourites. There is the Fordson E27N which the old chaps call the ‘High Nellie’, I like the

Ferguson FE35 grey and gold, the Mini but not the BMW version, and I love to see a Jaguar E Type when I go to events. I like to see all the different types of stationary engines and accessories and of course, the steam

In the future, I would like to own an Austin Healey Frog-eyed Sprite, a Series II Land-Rover, a Minivan, a Morris Minor Traveller and a Ford Model T. I would like to put a tent and some camping stuff in the back of the Morris Minor Traveller and go on a road trip holiday. I would visit all the old steam railways and museums that Fred Dibnah visited on his travels; what fun would that be! With the Model T and the Frogeye Sprite, I just want to go to shows and look cool. With the Minivan, I would like to load some camera gear and take a whole pile of photos, and with the Landy I simply want it to be my everyday car. I know, high expectations.

I'm learning to stick weld, but I want to learn Mig, so that I can do bodywork. The tech won't let me do the welding night class until I'm 16 - five more years to go! Dad and I will have to have a go ourselves, because mum won't let me work with the gas bottles until I'm older. But for now, I have to master how to stick weld or I will be 16 before I can weld properly. Talking about welding; when I was at the Limavady Grammar School open night, I saw the tech room and was amazed at all the lathes and drills and the amount of tools - they had more than Dad and I. I hope there will be more exciting times ahead.

GOOD GROUND FOR BRITAIN’S PLOUGHMEN & WOMEN

8th & 9th October 2022 at Chatsworth Estate, Derbyshire

Britain’s top ploughmen and women were treated to some good ground to show off their skills, at the 71st British National Ploughing Championships on the Chatsworth Estate on land at Glapwell, Derbyshire.

A heavy downpour during the week softened the ground, and more rain the day before, made conditions good for the competitors who had travelled from all over the country to take part. Almost 250 local champions ploughed over the two days on a site kindly provided by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

However, the rain meant some sticky conditions in other parts of the site, such as trade stands arriving and competitors arriving to find their lorries having to be towed onto the field. The sun then shone for the weekend, so competitors had near-perfect conditions to show off their skills in the various categories of ploughing.

The Reversible Plough-Off Final was won by Mick Chappell from Loversall, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, ploughing with a Ford tractor and Kverneland plough. This is the third time Mick has won the title and he finished with 330 points, ahead of two former British Champions - just 4 points in front of Ian Brewer from Wadebridge, Cornwall, and 27 points clear of Peter Alderslade from East Boldan, Tyne & Wear who came in third.

The winner of the British Conventional title was James Witty from East Lutton, near Malton, North Yorkshire. James also used a Ford/Kverneland combination and also beat two past British Champions with 270 points. Evan Watkin from Newtown, Powys was second with 263 points and Nigel Vickers from Sarn, Malpas, Cheshire was third just one point behind. This is the first time that James has won the Conventional title, although he has

Mick and James have now qualified to represent England in the 2023 World Ploughing Contest which will be held in Latvia.

In the vintage ploughing finals, the Vintage Trailing Championship was won by John Crowder from Sturton by Stow, Lincolnshire. John retained the title from last year and is the current European Vintage Ploughing

won the Reversible title twice before and is a past World Reversible Champion.

Champion. Using a Fordson N tractor and a Ransome RSLD plough, he scored 261 points, beating Trevor Johnstone from Wigton, Cumbria into second place with a 15 point lead. Two points behind Trevor was a previous World and European Vintage Champion, John Milnes from Penistone, South Yorkshire.

The Vintage Hydraulic Plough-Off Final winner was Richard Ingram from Atherstone, Warwickshire, who finished well ahead of the competition with a 23 point lead. Since the Vintage Hydraulic Plough-Off Final was brought in five years ago, this is the fourth time Richard has won it, gaining 267 points with his Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome TS54 plough. Second place was George Black from Earlston, Berwickshire and in third place was Ian Berriman from Driffield, East Yorkshire.

The Classic Championship title was won for the third time in a row by David Thomlinson from Escrick, near York who, ploughing with his Ford 3000 tractor and Ransome TS86 plough was in front of Jon Cole from Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire by just 2 points. David scored 266 points, Jon 264 points and another 2 points behind with 262 points was Nick Morely from Lowdham, Nottinghamshire.

Brand new this year was the Classic Reversible PloughOff Final, which was won by Graham Sutton from Nuneaton, Warwickshire. Graham ploughed with a Massey Ferguson 65 tractor and a Ransome TS82 plough and won 303 points, a seven point lead over Stephen Watkins from Maltby, South Yorkshire and a 30 point lead from his son, George Sutton who finished with 273 points.

The Overall Vintage Champion, judged independently, was John Crowder and all of the vintage winners have qualified to plough in the 2023 European Vintage Ploughing Championships in the Netherlands.

The other main titles over the weekend were the Overall Horse Ploughing Champion, won by Martin Kerswell from Fordingbridge, Hampshire; the Overall Young Farmers Champion which was taken by Stuart Vickers from Malpas, Cheshire and the High Cut Ploughing Champion, won by Derek Needham from Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The Supreme Championship title was judged independently from all the title winners and was won by James Witty. All the trophies on the second day were presented by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Mark Turner, Chairman of the Society of Ploughmen, who organised the Championships said, “We were given a fantastic site on the Chatsworth Estate this year and we were delighted that our hosts, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, could join us for the presentation. It made it very special for the prize winners this weekend.”

Main sponsors of the event were Firestone, Aztec Oils and Continental Tyres and further support was given by Lantra, Homefire, AR Demolotion, Cheffins, Tama UK, Dalton Tags, Russells, HME, Russells and Dales Agri Sales Agency. Full results can be found on www.ploughmen.co.uk.

A date for your diary - the 72nd British National Ploughing Championships will be held on 14th and 15th October 2023 at Bishop’s Lydeard, near Taunton, Somerset.

Tractor Fest at Tates

on 24th September 2022 at Tates Garden Centre in Ripon, North Yorkshire

How it all began!

In September 2020, in a short break between covid lock downs, it was decided to celebrate National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club (NVTEC) West Yorkshire Group Chairman Mark Nicholson’s Birthday, and an attempt by the Group to escape the months of imposed house arrest that we had all suffered, there should be a short informal vintage tractor road run with a mid-way lunch stop.

West Yorkshire Group member, Dennis Boot, offered to use his home in Killinghall as a starting point and would kindly lend some of his collection of ten classic tractors. The escape from lockdown blues was on.

On 16th September 2020, five of Dennis’s tractors set off from Killinghall through the villages of Hampsthwaite, Birstwith, Clint, Burnt Yates, Shaw Mills, Bishop Thornton, Fountains Abbey and then to lunch at the newly opened Olive Tree Restaurant at Tates Garden Centre before returning home.

The five tractors arrived at a large modern garden centre, with not only ample parking but a spacious, beautifully maintained and mowed field overlooking a very well stocked outdoor sales area.

Lunch at the Olive Tree was very enjoyable, made even more welcoming by the very enthusiastic greeting by Managing Director Tom Tate. The thought was inevitably fantastic catering, clean modern toilets, large field with a car park, keen and willing host. The thought was inevitable - What a place for a show!

During the covid delays, discussions took place between Tom Tate and Mark Nicholson, and the idea of an end of lockdown informal show became a reality.

The date was set for 25th September 2021. Ripon Farm Services in Ripon were asked for their support, and they

agreed to supply one of their show units and send along a modern John Deere and some of their heritage John Deere fleet. The event was publicised through Tates social media and posters, the West Yorkshire group’s newsletters and Mark Nicholson having an interview with Radio York. The big question was ‘what will the weather do’ and ‘will anyone turn up’?

It was a lovely fine and warm day, and they came! Tractor

owners and NVTEC members were just happy to be out again, to meet up with friends they had not seen for nearly two years.

East Yorkshire Group of the NVTEC travelled long distances to give a great display of engines, whilst tractor owners came from all over the area to join in the fun. The response from the public was fantastic. Young and old sat on, looked at and talked about tractors and watched the stationary engines running, whilst learning just how much these engines helped with early mechanization of agriculture and industry. They also visited the Garden Centre and enjoyed the delights of the Olive Tree restaurant whose exhausted manager at the end of the day was heard to say, “I didn’t think you tractor fellas ate so much”.

At the close of this very successful show, we all wondered if we should do it again next year. Very shortly afterwards the day for 2022 was set for 24th September, and it was decided to make the show an annual event and raise money for a different charity each year.

In the meantime, Tom Tate joined the ranks of classic tractor enthusiast by becoming the proud owner of a Ferguson Grey Gold.

As Tom and his partner Sarah have a very young son, Freddy, who recently needed treatment at the children’s ward, in the Leeds General Infirmary for a very serious heart condition he was born with, this was the cause we chose to support this year.

In addition to the tractors and engines there was a raffle, tombola, face painting and a display of birds of prey and exotic pets, making the event a real family day.

On the day of the event the weather remained fine, and

even more exhibitors than last year turned up. Once again, Ripon Farm Services gave their support bringing a lot more of their heritage fleet of John Deere tractors and once again a very modern John Deere. East Yorkshire Group NVTEC members arrived with their engines showing some very interesting and rare ones.

Peter Wright, TVs Yorkshire Vet, arrived driving a classic Ford Tractor, one of a group belonging to Steven Dresser, a collector near Thirsk. We had tractors ranging from a tiny Bolens garden tractor, to a huge Claas towing a massive Sumo Quadtrac cultivator and all sizes in between. Some immaculately restored to Concours standard and others still in original condition, some with implements attached looking like they have just arrived after a days work on the farm.

Adding to the attraction we had some classic cars making it a very interesting day for the vintage enthusiasts.

Young Freddy Tate was around all day showing a very early indication that he will inherit his father’s interest in classic tractors, whilst enjoying the attention he was getting from his grandmother, aunts and every one he met with a lovely endearing smile.

The public response was even better than 2021 with people showing there is still a huge interest in vintage and classic tractors, cars and stationary engines. The result was Tom and Sarah went to the Leeds General Infirmary with a cheque for £4,000 raised on the day, thanks to the generosity of the public and all the exhibitors who helped to make this an amazing day.

This only goes to show that NVTEC members not only have fun with their tractors and engines, but other worth while causes benefit. What could be better?
