A Christmas Story By John Selley of The Ferguson Club

I

t was Christmas Eve, I had done all my chores, the turkey was ready, the sprouts done and the parsnips and spuds peeled and I just wanted some quiet time so decided to go for a walk. It had snowed but the sun was shining and the atmosphere was lovely and crisp, in fact it was a joy to be out.

out of the question and would have be done over three nights and at overtime rates. All this made Santa very sad and he really didn’t know what to do. Rudolf suggested that Santa use a Fergie for the rural parts of the country, and he, Rudolf, would do the towns, to which Santa agreed.

My walk took me to Tractor Heaven where, as my granddaughter says, magic happens to dead and dying grey fergie tractors and they are given a second chance. So you can understand that I wasn’t terribly surprised to see Santa Claus sat on my tractor Jill.

Of course, I had to ask why the red biscuit tin, thermos and netting sack. The biscuit tin was because Santa couldn’t eat all the mince pies that had been put out for him and, as he hadn’t any little helpers, he put the excess in the tin for latter. The thermos was because Santa is a responsible driver and would never drink and drive so all the drinks put out went into the thermos, and of course the netting sack was for the carrots put out for the reindeer.

As one would, I wandered over to have a word with Santa and asked if I could take a picture of him which you see below. I had to ask what had happened to Rudolph and the team and the sleigh; in other words why a tractor? Well it seemed that Rudolf has been suffering with Arthurrightus (this is the correct spelling, we are dealing with Reindeers!). So, with Rudolf’s agreement Santa went to The Reindeer Market where he found Red Robbo. He, of course, had a super red nose. Sadly, Red Robbo did not like the carrots which, he said, were not up to British standard, the stables were not heated to the correct temperature and as for that crazy idea of delivering all those presents in just one night, that was completely

4

Winter 23/24

Santa asked me to reassure all children that normal service has been resumed and please not to stop leaving the mince pies, drink and carrots (and certainly NO red diesel), for which he thanks everybody. We then said goodbye, and as if by magic, Santa was gone! Well Christmas is a magical time! I hope you had a Very Happy Christmas and a Fergielicious New Year. Tractor Grandpa.

WATERWORKS MUSEUM AWARDED ACCREDITATION ACCOLADE he Waterworks Museum - Hereford is delighted to announce that it has been awarded full accreditation from Arts Council England.

T

An independent working museum concerned primarily, but not exclusively, with the story of the supply of water for public consumption from earliest habitation to the close of the 20th century. Entirely run by volunteers, the vision is to be recognised as a specialist museum that brings industrial heritage to life. Full accreditation is the gold bar of the national standards and is the benchmark for well-run Museums and Galleries. It means that the Waterworks Museum – Hereford is properly managed and governed to the nationally agreed industry standard and shows the museum takes proper care of its collections, sharing them with visitors and keeping them safe for future generations. Accreditation helps in opening doors to funding opportunities and will be significant in driving forward the Museums’ vision to thrive and grow as a specialist museum. Being a working museum with one of the widest ranges of working engines in the UK and home to the UK’s oldest in-situ working triple-expansion steam engine, it will enable access to advice and funding to develop greater accessibility to the collection and support life-long learning. The Museum educates across the spectrum, not just the story of water and engineering but also deals with contemporary issues relating to the environment and sustainability.

scheme across the UK. More information about the Accreditation scheme can be found at www.artscouncil.org.uk Jill Phillips, Chair of Trustees and Governance Director at the Waterworks Museum -Hereford said: "This is a real achievement for a small group of dedicated volunteers and deserves celebrating. It shows that the museum is adaptive as well as responsive to new challenges, where we can face the future with confidence in an environment that is an open, welcoming place for volunteers and visitors.” Liz Johnson, Director Museums and Cultural Property at Arts Council England said: "We’re delighted that the Waterworks Museum – Hereford has been successful in gaining their accreditation status. This means that their Collections will be looked after and maintained offering inspiration, enjoyment and learning for the local community and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.” For more information, please contact info@waterworksmuseum.org.uk

Additionally, this accolade gives confidence to donors and sponsors who may wish to support the museum in preserving our heritage and inspiring future generations. Accreditation covers museums of all types and sizes, from the smallest volunteer-run museums to national museums, and more than 1,700 museums are currently taking part in the Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements

GOOD GROUND FOR BRITAIN'S PLOUGHMEN AND WOMEN

T

he country’s top ploughmen and women showed off their skills in Somerset last weekend when the 72nd British National Ploughing Championships were held at Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton by kind permission of K S Coles and family. Heavy rainfall the day before made getting on and off the site tough for the competitors and the trade companies who were in attendance, though it left ploughing conditions good. However, a warm sunny weekend brought out spectators in their droves and thousands attended to see the champions at work in the various categories. Over 250 competitors had entered to plough over the weekend and the British Reversible Plough-Off Final was won by William Tuper from Pulborough, West Sussex with 322 points. William was ploughing with a John Deere tractor and Kverneland plough and finished 32 points ahead of Thomas Sutton from Burton on Trent, Staffordshire who was using a Fendt tractor and Kverneland plough. The British Conventional title went to Ashley Boyles from Market Rasen, Lincolnshire who was using a Massey Ferguson/Kverneland combination. This is the sixth time Ashley has won the title and he finished 10 points ahead of another former British Champion, Nigel Vickers from Malpas, Cheshire. William and Ashley have now qualified to represent England in the 2024 World Ploughing Contest which will be held in Estonia. There were four vintage Plough-Off Finals and in the Vintage Trailed Plough-Off Final, Trevor Johnstone from Wigton, Cumbria took first place with his Standard Fordson and Ransome RSLD plough, with 281 points. Second place, with 267 points was last year’s champion, John Crowder from Sturton by Stow, Lincolnshire, also using Fordson/Ransome. The Vintage Hydraulic Plough-Off Final was won by reigning champion, Richard Ingram from Atherstone, Warwickshire using a Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome TS54 plough. Since the vintage finals were introduced in 2017, Richard has won five out of six. He gained 282 points and a massive lead over runner-up, Ian Berriman from Driffield, East Yorkshire who scored 246 points with the same tractor and plough combination. The start of the Plough-Off Finals on the second day

The Classic Championship title was won by Jon Cole from Whitchurch, near Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, ploughing with his Nuffield 10/42 and Ransome TS86 plough. With 240 points, he had just a 4 point lead from second place Ray Alderson from Bolam, County Durham, who finished with 236 points. Stephen Watkins from Maltby, South Yorkshire won the Classic Reversible title with his Massey Ferguson 35 and Ransome TS82 plough. Stephen is also the current European Classic Reversible Champion, winning his title in the Netherlands last month. He was just 3 points ahead of Graham Sutton from Nuneaton, Warwickshire. All of the vintage winners qualify to take part in the 2024 European Vintage Ploughing Championships in the Republic of Ireland. The Overall Vintage Champion, judged independently, was Trevor Johnstone who was also crowned 2023 Supreme Champion. The other main titles over the weekend were the Overall Horse Ploughing Champion, won by Martin Kerswell from Fordingbridge, Hampshire; the Overall Young Farmers Champion which was taken by 20-year old Josh Bullard from Royston, Hertfordshire and the High Cut Ploughing Champion, won by Derek Needham from Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Sue Frith, Chief Executive of the Society of Ploughmen, who organised the Championships said, “It was a testing time for our volunteers when the rain came but all went well in the end. Our hosts were absolutely fantastic, not only providing a great site but their hospitality was second to none and everyone who attended, either taking part or spectating, enjoyed it.” Main sponsors of the event were Firestone and Aztec Oils and further support was given by Lantra, Clarke Willmott, AR Demolition, Cheffins, Dales Agri Sales Agency, Parris Tractors, Hunt Forest Group and Tama UK. Full results can be found on www.ploughmen.co.uk. Next year’s event - the 73rd British National Ploughing Championships - will be held on 12th and 13th October 2024 on the Thoresby Estate, near Newark, Nottinghamshire by kind permission of Thoresby Farming.

Your Insurance Questions Answered ’m Amy Chamberlin from Cherished Car Insurance and I have been given the opportunity to talk about insurance for your tractors. Across the motor insurance market, the value of your vehicle is the most likely reason for a dispute when making a claim. This is why I would like to answer some questions regarding how to value your tractor for insurance purposes.

I

What value should I insure my tractor for? If your tractor is a recent purchase, the insured value should be the price you have recently paid for your tractor. In the event of a claim, you would only receive the amount that you had recently paid for the tractor. If you have owned your tractor for some time, the value of your tractor should be the amount you would be able to sell it for on a willing seller and willing buyer basis. If I got a good deal for my recent purchase, can I insure it for a higher value? No, to begin with you would only be able to value your tractor at the amount you had recently paid. Once you have owned the tractor for a while or have done some work to justify an increase, this is when you can consider increasing the value in line with the market. It is important to remember, that the value should still reflect the likely sale price. For example, if you have purchased new tyres for your tractor at £1,000, this would not necessarily increase the amount you could sell your tractor for by £1,000. I have owned my tractor for several years and I am unsure how to value my tractor? If you are unsure of how to value your tractor it is worthwhile having a look online or in magazines to see what similar tractors are being advertised at. Sometimes you can see sales results from auction sites which are useful as you can see the actual amount the tractor was sold for. For other sales, it is important to realise these are the advertised prices and not necessarily the amount they are sold for. Sometimes it is helpful to join a tractor club to ask their opinion. Attending shows and other events is also a great opportunity to ask fellow enthusiasts their opinion. What is the difference between a market value and agreed value? Usually when you are arranging cover for a classic tractor, it is possible to arrange for an agreed value. This would mean you are guaranteed what value you would receive for your tractor in the event of a successful claim. If your tractor is insured on a market value basis, the claims handler would need to determine what similar tractors are being sold for and this would be the value they would look to settle the claim at but only up to the value you have declared for your tractor.

Please mention THE VINTAGE SCENE when responding to advertisements

What if my tractor is undervalued? If it is determined that your tractor has been significantly undervalued, the underwriters might believe this was done intentionally to obtain a lower premium. This can affect the amount you receive in the event of a claim so it is important to value your tractor at the correct amount. How do I arrange an agreed value? Practice to obtain an agreed value does vary between different insurance companies. At Cherished Car Insurance we would ask for up to date photographs to show all sides of your tractor along with what value you would like to confirm. If your tractor is a recent purchase, your purchase receipt is usually also required.

Festive Tractor Road Run by Barry Job fter the excesses of Christmas people are pleased to be out in the fresh air again. Thus the Festive Tractor Road Run, well organized by Dave Coombes for Friday 29th December 2023, proved to be extremely popular. 121 tractors participated, considerably more than was expected, although the marshalls coped well with the unexpected large number.

A

No doubt enthusiasts had waited to see what the weather had in store for the 29th as the previous day had seen the tail end of named storm “Gerrit”and was particularly wet and windy, not the sort of day to be out on a tractor if you could help it. The weather is always a gamble at this time of year, but in the event it was cool and dry until the very end of the day. The 24 mile route was excellent, planned by Dave Coombes, Tony Shepherd and Ed Good; it was in a very rural area to the south east of Telford, Shropshire. It was unusual in that over one third of the run was away from the public highway. The start was at Woodlands Farm, Weston under Lizard, just off the Roman Road Watling Street, by kind permission of Bradford Estates. At 10 o'clock they were off, leaving the farm drive the tractors were privileged to enter Weston Park, the ancient seat of the Bridgeman family, Earls of Bradford. Crossing the park they emerged in the hamlet of Tong, opposite the church of Saint Bartholomew, said to be the most beautiful village church in Shropshire. Crossing the M54 motorway the convoy headed west up Neach Hill to run alongside the motorway, then south over the intriguingly named Bonemill Bridge to the Halfway Stop at Green Acres

The lead tractor was Tony Shepherd's International B275, here, in this picture, he is preceded by Allan Brown to open the gates to Weston Park.

Jack Durose takes his Minneapolis Moline UT5 down the farm drive.

Farm, Kemberton, courtesy of Mark and Liz Lea. Suitably refreshed the tractors then headed east through Ryton, past Caynton Hall to Albrighton, a northward run saw them over the motorway once again and alongside the boundary wall of Weston Park back to Woodlands Farm. Here hot food and drinks were available. Apart from the inevitable couple of fuel problems and a puncture the run passed off without incident. The event was organized to support the Gnosall and Newport Lions Club in generating funds for prostate cancer testing and awareness. The total money raised was well in excess of £3,000. Dave Coombes and his helpers must be thanked for an enjoyable run through attractive scenery, a very welcome event at this time of year which was appreciated by the participants and a large number of spectators.

As is usual on these road runs; John Banks and his 1967 Massey Ferguson 135 acts as 'Last Tractor', although here, in this picture, he is followed by Ed Good to close the gates to Weston Park.

Leading the convoy through a road cutting away from Weston Park is Tony Shepherd aboard his1959 International B275.

Keeping the Age of Steam Alive!

uckinghamshire Railway Centre is a heritage steam railway run by Quainton Railway Society Ltd located on the edge of the picturesque village of Quainton, just 6 miles west of Aylesbury and 11 miles east of Bicester.

B

There are 25 acres of Railwayland for visitors to explore, and they are treated to train rides with giant steam locomotives pulling vintage passenger carriages. The Visitor Centre is a stunning, glass-roofed building which used to be the Rewley Road railway station building in central Oxford. It houses the Railway Café, gift shop and indoor platforms with fabulous railway carriages and a Victorian loco on display on either side. There is also an extensive railway museum with row after row of locos and carriages, from industrial to passenger stock from eras gone by. There is also a model railway and 1km of miniature railway track which visitors can pay a small fee (£1.50) to ride. The heritage railway’s open season is from Easter to Halloween, when they have

Steaming Days every Sunday with Special Events held regularly throughout the season. They hold lots of family events with visits from childhood celebrities like Peppa Pig, Paddington, Zog and Bluey, and of course Thomas the Tank Engine is a regular and most popular visitor! They also hold some fabulous heritage vehicle events, for which they are well known, with events ranging from their Spring Transport Festival in April, featuring agricultural vehicles and traction engines, and the Heritage Commercial Vehicle Society’s Ridgeway Run, which has been held here every year on Father’s Day for 40 years! Also running for many years is the annual Pre-1988 Vehicle Rally, now in its fifth decade, held on August Bank Holiday Monday. Vale of Glamorgan Ploughing & Hedging Society by Basil George he Society held its Annual Ploughing Match on Sunday 10 September 2023 at Boverton Place Farm, by kind permission of V J Thomas & Son of Pancross Farm. Mrs Cathy Thomas was this year’s president, and she comes from a line of champion ploughmen.

T

There were 40 tractors taking part in the various classes of ploughing. This number was down on last year, but this might have been due to the fact that on the same day there were a number of other similar events around the country.

A covey of judges

The chairman, John Thomas of Gilston, welcomed all competitors and thanked the field staff and steward for their continued support. He also thanked the judges who gave up their time to further the art of ploughing, plus the secretary Sarah Radcliffe, treasurer Lloyd Thomas and the committee. Finally,

the Society’s thanks were given to the many sponsors and patrons of the event for their continued support year after year. The event closed with prize-giving, completed by 5.00pm.

On a lighter note, on TV here in Wales we have a young man who gives the weather forecast and on St Swithin’s Day (15 July, which was wet) he mentioned that folklore states that the weather will remain the same for 40 days and 40 nights, but he thought this was a load of nonsense. St Swithin, sitting up there on cloud nine, must have picked up on the young man’s comment and the result was we had the wettest July and August on record! This same forecaster has another job on TV – Weatherman Walking – where he explores the footpaths and walking routes of Wales and I must say he’s very good at that. May I suggest he gives up the day job!

Ogmore Castle Tractor Run by Basil George n Sunday 1 October the annual Ogmore Castle Tractor Run, organised by the Glamorgan Iron Horse Society, took place as usual in the Castle Field. There were 40 tractors, a couple of motorbikes, Land Rovers and a Range Rover taking part and they left the field at 10.30am for a tour of the Vale of Glamorgan and areas north of the M4, totalling about 28 miles. All monies raised will be donated to worthy charities.

O

The ladies preparing bacon rolls

Dave King, the Run Marshal, gave all the instructions before they set off, reminding all those taking part that they will be going through villages which will now have a 20 mph limit so they needed to keep an eye on the throttle, and also an eye out for cyclists who may be overtaking them! Thanks again went to Robert Williams for the use of the field and the support of all club members for the work put into making it a successful event. While it is nice to make the run a mystery tour from the point of those taking part, from the public’s point it would be nice to know what the schedule is as children, as well as adults, like to be ready to watch the stream of tractors etc coming

through their villages. Nevertheless, thanks must go to all those who took part, some having to do a mini tractor run to get to the starting point. Fortunately the weather was fine and the tractor run was another success.
