Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division III universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. In 2011, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. Mike
lege Coach of the Year in 1986 an 1988. On October 16, 1996, the Copiah-Lincoln community game Jones the ultimate honor; they inducted him into their 1996 Sports Hall of Fame Class.
JONES
Athletic Director jones01@mc.edu Mike Jones is stepping into his 13th season as the full-time athletic director after an incredibly successful basketball career at MC. Jones returned to his position as the full-time athletic director in 2008 after stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball program following the 2007-08 season. During his 20-year coaching career, including sixteen seasons at MC, the Hall of Fame coach put together a career record of 436-130 (.770). As athletic director, Jones has helped build one of the top athletic departments in the American Southwest Conference. In 12 years overseeing the athletics department, he has given all of MC’s programs an opportunity for success with improved facilities through fund-raising. In the 2009-10 season, every MC athletics team qualified for postseason play, and all but two teams had winning records. Under his leadership, the athletics department was able to raise over one million dollars for the addition of an artificial playing surface to the football field and new surrounding track facility. Under his watch, a new soccer complex was constructed in 2005 and a new fieldhouse was constructed in 2011. Major renovations were also made to A.E. Wood Coliseum in 2008. Coach Jones helped raise over $160,000 at the MC Athletics Dinner in 2012, where former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker. The Athletics Dinner has hosted speakers such as Gene Stallings, Oakland A’s outfielder Seth Smith, Robert Khayat, Sylvester Croom, Mike Bianco, and Jeff Brantley. After a four-year hiatus, Coach Jones returned to the bench for two seasons from 2006-08 where his Choctaws compiled a 46-9 record overall and a 35-5 conference mark. In the ‘06-’07 season, Jones led MC to a third consecutive ASC Championship and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III Tournament. In his first round as head coach of the Choctaws, Jones led MC to 14 consecutive winning seasons overall, including five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at his alma mater. Jones led MC to four ASC championships in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2007. In the 2007 season, the Choctaws reached as high as a #3 national ranking. Coach Jones earned three ASC Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams at the end of the season. Emphasizing defense, the Choctaws led the ASC in scoring and field goal percentage defense in 2007. Mike made the move to Mississippi College following a four-year stint at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he dominated the state and earned national prestige. During his tenure, Jones’ teams were consistently ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Top-Twenty Poll. He took teams to the National Junior College Tournament where the 1988 team finished seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1998 and were two-time Region 23 Champions.
Jones’ coaching success took no one by surprise after his stellar background as an assistant. Before going to Co-Lin, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at MC and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a Master of Education in School Administration in 1977. Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to Jane Jones of New Hebron. They have two children, a son Michael and a daughter Mandy. Michael is married to their daughter-in-law Amy. Mandy is married to their son-in-law Taylor Sisson. Coach Jones has four grandchildren, Zach, Ansley Kate, Will and Charlotte.
MC Athletics Mission Statement The philosophy of intercollegiate athletics at Mississippi College is inherent to, and compatible with, the vision statement of Mississippi College. The vision statement reads: “Mississippi College seeks to be a university recognized for academic excellence and commitment to the cause of Christ.” Intercollegiate athletics is one way the university provides activities and an environment which stimulate the intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional and physical development of its students. It is in keeping with the vision of Mississippi College that the Board of Trustees voted in March 1995 for the university to become a member of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the fall of 1997. Mississippi College is committed to the NCAA Division III Philosophy Statement: “Colleges and universities in Division III place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience. They also seek to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among their student-athletes and athletics staff.” Intercollegiate athletics at Mississippi College are committed to adhering to the letter and spirit of rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the American Southwest Conference (ASC).
For his accomplishments, Jones was named Region 23 Junior Col2013-14 CHOCTAW BASKETBALL

Susan
MUSSELWHITE Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Senior Woman's Administrator musselwh@mc.edu Susan Musselwhite enters her eighth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 14th as Senior Woman Administrator / Compliance Officer
ADMINISTRATIVE As the Assistant Athletic Director, Susan Musselwhite is involved in many facets of the day to day operations of the athletics department for both the men and women. Musselwhite also directly oversees the planning and organization of special athletic department events including but not limited to fundraising, home game administration and facility use from outside entities. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Musselwhite’s main responsibility revolves around the well being of our athletes and the growth and development of our programs. In this role, Musselwhite was responsible for initiating the first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Every campus is required to have a SAAC group per NCAA rules. This group was established to give student-athletes a voice on campus, as well as to the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA.” The SAAC is also a way for our athletes to be involved and promote many community service projects.
Since joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998, Coach Musselwhite led the Lady Choctaws to a 205-152 overall record. In 1999, the Lady Choctaws finished 22-9, which at that time, ranked as one of the best records in school history. In 2002, the Lady Choctaws produced a 26-14 record and finished second overall after losing to East Texas Baptist in the ASC Championship game. In 2005 Musselwhite received Co-Coach of the Year honors that she shared with Louisiana College coach Tim Whitman. The 2006 season concluded with the Lady Choctaws finishing with a 24-16 overall record and a third place finish after losing in the semi-final game of the ASC Championship tournament. Several Lady Choctaws received post season honors and Musselwhite was named the East Division “Coach of the Year.” Musselwhite attributes the programs success to the growth of the sport of fastpitch softball. “When I started coaching at Mississippi College, fastpitch softball was new to most of the high schools in Mississippi and non existant at the junior college level. The emergence of fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport drew immediate recognition to the sport. The NCAA quickly followed by adding the sport as a championship sport and it has not stopped growing since.
PERSONAL A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Musselwhite received her Bachelor of Education degree from Mississippi College in December of 1994 and completed her Masters of Education in August of 1996. Musselwhite was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006. Musselwhite also serves an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and has been a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.
Serving as the Compliance Officer, Musselwhite is responsible for certifying the eligibility for the more than 400 student-athletes on campus as well as serving as a campus liaison between Mississippi College, the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA regarding ever changing rules and regulations. “I am very fortunate to be able to continue my career at Mississippi College in this role. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with Mike Jones, our coaches and our staff and to be a part of such a successful program.”
COACHING Before being named Assistant Athletic Director in the Fall of 2006, Musselwhite served as the Head Softball Coach at Mississippi College. After completing a four year career and serving one as a graduate assistant, Musselwhite took over the softball program in its Division III inception and guided the program to 7 consecutive 20+ win seasons and 9 winning seasons in a row. As the Head Softball coach, Musselwhite tried to be an ambassador for the sport of softball by being a community resource. Musselwhite conducted many player clinics as well as coach’s clinics trying to improve the knowledge level and skill level of players and coaches around the state of Mississippi.

CHEERLEADING The Mississippi College cheerleading program has a long history as one of the top programs in the county. Over the years the program has produced some of the best squads in the country in Division II and Division III, routinely walking away from competitions with top honors. The 2013-2014 cheer squad will be another strong group with 17 ladies taking over the program. The group has a history of excellence in performance as evidenced by seven Division II National Championships and numerous second and third place finishes in the National Championship along with annual wins at summer camps and clinics. This year’s squad is comprised of freshman through graduate students and will be involved in the University’s athletic events, spirit activities, and in various community activities.

Season Outlook SEASON PREVIEW
The Mississippi College men’s basketball program has been one of the most successful in the country since making the move to Division III in 1996. In that 17-year span, MC has gone 347-112 with a winning percentage of .756. The Choctaws won 20 or more games in nine of those seasons and had just one losing year in that span. MC advanced to every American Southwest Conference Tournament that was held over the 15 years of its existence. With the impending move to Division II and the Gulf South Conference next season, the Choctaws have one final chance to win the ASC in their last go-around.
The Choctaws also bring in two junior college players that will compete in the low post. Juniors DEAUNDREA LYONS (6’4, 203) and KELVIN SMITH (6’5, 199) are similar players with their ability to attack the glass and get rebounds. Lyons comes from Faulkner State Community College and was the high school teammate of Christian Howard. While at Faulkner, he averaged five points and six rebounds per game. Smith comes from Holmes Community College.
The Choctaws bring back just one player that saw action in more than four games a year ago, but the incoming talent gives the MC coaching staff reason to be optimistic heading into the season.

POINT GUARD The Choctaws will need a newcomer to step up at the point guard position after the departure of Jarvis Moore and Turmonte Ragland from last year’s roster. MC has several options at the position, both from a junior college and freshman standpoint. Sophomore CHRISTIAN HOWARD (5’9, 166) is a transfer from Alabama Southern Community College where averaged tw assists and three steals per game. He is a great leader on the floor and can get hot from long range, opening up other scoring options off the dribble. Junior CALEB MISKELLY (6’1, 180) is a familiar name for Jackson-Metro fans after a stellar career at Madison-Ridgeland Academy in which he led his teams to four straight state championships. He spent a season at Delta State University where he started 13 games at point guard. Freshman JARED CASE (6’0, 159) is another option to run the offense for the Choctaws. He played at West Lincoln High School in Brookhaven and gives MC another shooter on the outside, as well as, an excellent passer and decision-maker.
WINGS The Choctaws have just one player returning on the wing in sophomore ANDREW FEHRENBACHER (6’1, 185). He is a local product that played with the Jackson Victors in high school. Fehrenbacher has a great work ethic and will look to push for playing time in his second season with MC. MC will look to fill the outside positions with junior college talent, as well as, a freshman that has solid potential. Junior JAY CASE (6’2, 158) joins his brother Jared in the backcourt from Brookhaven. He spent two seasons at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, where he averaged 10 points per game and was named to the MACJC All-Star Team. He has “in-thegym” range and stretches the defense to allow the post players to work inside.
12
Freshman LUCAS BURRISS (6’4, 217) gives the Choctaws a physical presence in the post. He has the size and ability to push opponents around to get rebounds and good looks at the basket. Burris also played at West Lincoln High School with Jared and Jay Case.
SCHEDULE Junior JARON EDWARDS (6’2, 175) is another option on the wing. He has the ability to slide over to point guard, as well. Edwards comes from William Carey University after playing at Bowling Green Academy. On the other side, the Choctaws have two wing players that have the size and ability to play in the post. Juniors EMMANUEL EZEJIOFO (6’4, 206) and RAYNER FREDRICK (6’3, 204) will compliment the outside shooting of Case and Edwards. Ezejiofo is an athletic player that had a stellar career at Hillcrest Christian in Raymond. He played wide receiver for a season at Southern Miss and spent a year at East Central Community College. Fredrick comes from Grand Canyone University and sees the floor well for a big man. Freshman JESSE PIERCE (6’3, 180) is rookie that has the potential to have a big career as a Choctaw. He already possesses great leaping ability and works hard at the rest of his game.
The Choctaws are allowed 25 games in the regular season by Division III rules. With only 12 members of the American Southwest Conference remaining, MC will play a home-and-home schedule with each league opponent in 2013-14. This makes up 22 of the 25 games on the schedule. MC opens up the season with an exhibition game at Alcorn State. The Choctaws went down to Lorman in 2008 and picked up a win over the Division I Braves. The Choctaws will then play two non-conference games against Pensacola Christian and Rust to open the regular year. MC has never lost to either of those programs. Concordia Texas will come to the “Golden Dome” on December 2nd for the first conference game of the season.
POSTS The posts bring back the most experience on the Choctaw roster this season. Senior LAKIN FORD (6’4, 192) is the only MC player with more than four games of experience in the blue and gold. He played in 25 games, starting 21 for the Choctaws last season. The East Mississippi Community College transfer averaged 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45% from the floor. He scored in double-figures 10 times last season, including a season-high 21 points against Texas Lutheran. He has improved his jumper in the off-season and is becoming a much more aggressive player driving to the basket. Ford will obviously be leaned upon heavily to lead this inexperienced team as they get acclamated to playing for MC. Senior WILLIE WILLIAMS (6’4, 200) is also considered a returner on this year’s squad after going through pre-season workouts last season. He was injured prior to the year and did not see action on

LOFTON Head Coach
Head coach Don Lofton enters his 10th season as the head coach at Mississippi College and 30th overall in the program. The 2012-13 season saw the Choctaws advance to the ASC Tournament for the 15th time in 15 tries and as they earned the #3 seed from the East Division with a 15-11 record, overall. Junior Brandon Blake was named a D3hoops.com All-South Region selection, while also earning a spot on the All-ASC Team. Senior Adam Smith was a Second Team selection, while Turmonte Ragland earned an All-Defensive Team selection. The Choctaws advanced to the ASC Tournament in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, making them the only team in the league to qualify for every tournament. In 2011-12, MC landed Trevon Malone on the All-ASC First Team. In the 2009-10 season, Lofton led the Choctaws to their 22nd consecutive winning season and a trip to the American Southwest Conference Tournament. MC finished 19-7 overall and 14-6 in the ASC, while finishing second on the East Division. In the 2008-09 season, the Choctaws advanced all the way to the ASC Championship Game before being ousted by Texas-Dallas. It would be the 10th time in 11 tournaments that the Choctaws advanced to the championship game. MC led the league with a .509 field goal percentage.

After taking over the program from Hall of Fame coach Mike Jones, Lofton maintained the same level of success with four straight appearances in the ASC Championship game. That same season Lofton kept the streak alive by leading the team to eight straight wins to end the season and reach the title game. His team also led the ASC in scoring defense. In 2002-03, Lofton’s original season as Head Coach, he led the Choctaws to their fourth ASC Championship in six years. MC won 20 games and appeared in the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the sixth straight year.
has helped recruit some of the best talent in the American Southwest Conference. With him filling the role of recruiting coordinator, the Choctaws made five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. They also won the ASC Championship three five of five seasons. During his last three seasons as an assistant, the Choctaws had five first team All-ASC selections and one ASC East Division Player of the Year. Lofton began his coaching career at Mississippi College as a graduate assistant in 1978-79, working for Coach Doug Hines. He also served in the same capacity during the 1979-80 season. Before returning as an assistant, Lofton coached at West Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., for four seasons. He began as an assistant coach and was the head coach for three seasons, 1982-85. He led the Mustangs to several outstanding seasons and was named Coach of the Year in the Southern Athletic Conference in 1982-83.
Lofton was also a vital part of the success achieved by the basketball program during his tenure at MC as an assistant coach. As the recruiting coordinator, he was responsible for maintaining the talent level necessary to keep the Choctaws in the upper echelon of teams in the country year in and year out. Brooks ASSISTANT COACH JBROOKS@MC.EDU Assistant men’s basketball coach Josh Brooks is entering his sixth season on the coaching staff of the Choctaws. Brooks returned to MC after a four-year playing career and one season as a student assistant. In his five seasons with the Choctaws, MC has advanced to the American Southwest Conference Tournament each year. The 2012-13 season saw the Choctaws land Brandon Blake on the All-ASC First Team and the D3hoops. com All-South Region Team. In the 2008-09 season, Brooks helped lead the Choctaws to a 20-7 overall record and an appearance in the American Southwest Conference Tournament Championship Game. After leaving MC, Brooks stayed in the Jackson area, coaching one season at Jackson Prep before spending two seasons as an assistant to Kenny Bizot at Hillcrest Christian. In 2004, Brooks took the head coaching job at Hernando High School in north Mississippi. In his first season, Brooks led the Tigers to a 10-15 record, a notable improvement over previous seasons at the school. Brooks then led Hernando to three seasons with records over .500, culminating in a 28-7 record and a trip to the 4A North State Tournament in 2007-08. Brooks graduated from MC in 1999. Josh is married to the former Marie McDade, who graduated from MC in 2001. Josh and Marie have two children: Avery (8) and Mallory (6).

2012-13 Season Review The 2012-13 Mississippi College men’s basketball season was one that saw the team post their first winning record in three years after going 13-13 in 201011 and 9-16 in 2011-12. The Choctaws were 15-11 and advanced to the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the 15th time in 15 tries. MC is the only team in the league to qualify for every tournament since its inception.
The Choctaws started fast on the year, winning four of their first five games, including a 97-85 victory over eventual ASC Champion Concordia Texas in the “Golden Dome.” On the season, MC was 10-2 in A.E. Wood Coliseum, with their only losses coming to national runner-up Mary HardinBaylor and regular season East Division champion, Texas-Dallas. After three straight losses put MC’s record at 4-4, the Choctaws ran off three wins ina-row over Schreiner, Texas Lutheran and a road victory over Louisiana College. MC struggled to find consistency as the year went along, but the Choctaws finished the season with three home wins over Texas-Tyler, East Texas Baptist and LC to clinch the #2 seed in the East Division. The Choctaws faced Concordia Texas in the first round and trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half, but MC would fight back and eventually took the lead with 2:41 remaining. With seven seconds left, the Tornados took a 78-76 lead, leaving the Choctaws with an opportunity to tie or win the game at the buzzer. The final
three-point shot was off target and MC would finish the season with a hard-fought loss. Three Choctaws earned postseason ASC honors on the year, led by Brandon Blake with a First Team All-ASC selection, honoring the top five players in the league. Adam Smith was a Second Team All-ASC East Division selection, while Turmonte Ragland was named to the East Division All-Defensive Team. Blake was the team’s leading scorer with 15.6 points per game, shooting 43% from the floor and going to the free throw line 186 times. Along with his selection to the All-ASC team, he was also a D3hoops.com All-Region performer for his efforts. Ragland and Laquavius Cotton also averaged in double-figures with 10.5 and 10.6 points, respectively. Ragland moved to point guard as the season progressed and led the team with 57 assists. Cotton shot 34% from the three-point line and had three 20-point games on the season, including a season-high 28 against Huntingdon. Adam Smith finished off his stellar career with the best field goal percentage in school history, shooting 69% from the floor over two years. He averaged 7.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest in 47 games played. Smith had his best career game on “Senior Day,” recording a doubledouble with 24 points and 15 rebounds against ETBU.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, enters its 18th season with the 2013-14 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today's present group of 14 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states -- Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi -- the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference has a multidimensional mission to create an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for the conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2013-14 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men's championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women's championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

2013-14 PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Kyle Schleigh, Sr., F, Texas-Dallas
32
Mary Hardin-Baylor has been picked to win the 2014 American Southwest Conference men’s basketball title after a vote by the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the conference office announced Tuesday (Oct. 22). Texas-Dallas senior Kyle Schleigh was selected as the ASC Preseason Player of the Year. Mary Hardin-Baylor, who was the national runner-up in the 2013 NCAA Division III National Championships, received 297 points in the preseason poll and collected an overwhelming 21 of a possible 26 first-place votes. Coach Ken DeWeese, the 2013 ASC Coach of the Year, and national coach of the year in four different publications, led the Cru to a school record 27-6 mark and became the first ASC program to advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship game. During DeWeese’s tenure, Mary Hardin-Baylor has advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament six times in the last seven seasons. The Cru returns nine lettermen, including three starters led by senior forward Kitrick Bell (Fort Bend, Texas/Marshall HS). A first-team all-conference selection, Bell was also an All-American honorable mention by D3hoops.com. Rounding out the top three poll selections are the University of Texas at Dallas and Concordia University Texas. Texas-Dallas was picked to finish second with 276 points and received two first-place votes. The Comets have won the last five East Division titles. Concordia Texas was selected third with 265 points and three first-place votes. The Tornados won their first ASC championship last year and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. The University of Texas at Tyler ranked fourth with 215 points, Hardin-Simmons University came in fifth with 199 points and East Texas Baptist University had 127 points to rank sixth. Mississippi College (122), Louisiana College (118) and LeTourneau University (116) ranked seventh, eighth and ninth respectively, while Howard Payne University (93), Sul Ross State University (62) and University of Ozarks (50) came in 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively. Texas-Dallas senior forward Kyle Schleigh (Houston, Texas/ Kingwood HS) was named the ASC Preseason Player of the Year. A first-team all-conference selection, Schleigh ranked 19th in the NCAA in scoring (21.4), tied for first in the ASC in steals (2.3) and ranked second in rebounds (10.2). A third-team All-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Schleigh was also named the East Division Player of the Year. The current UTD career leader in rebounds (641) and blocks (88), Schleigh ranks third all-time at UTD in scoring (1,224) and fourth in steals (129). The 2014 season marks the 18th in league history and the first to begin play without an East and West Division. Regular season play begins Nov. 15. The three-day, eight-team, single-elimination conference tournament is slated for February 28-March 2 at the site of the No. 1 seed and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship will be on the line.
