Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division III universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. The facility was originally furnished with state of the art strength equipment made possible by the donation of Mrs. Aline Williams in memory of her husband Charles H. Williams. In 2011, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. The field can also be seen from inside the weight room with wall to wall windows on three sides of the facility.

Susan

MUSSELWHITE Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Senior Woman's Administrator musselwh@mc.edu Susan Musselwhite enters her eighth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 14th as Senior Woman Administrator / Compliance Officer

ADMINISTRATIVE As the Assistant Athletic Director, Susan Musselwhite is involved in many facets of the day to day operations of the athletics department for both the men and women. Musselwhite also directly oversees the planning and organization of special athletic department events including but not limited to fundraising, home game administration and facility use from outside entities. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Musselwhite’s main responsibility revolves around the well being of our athletes and the growth and development of our programs. In this role, Musselwhite was responsible for initiating the first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Every campus is required to have a SAAC group per NCAA rules. This group was established to give student-athletes a voice on campus, as well as to the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA.” The SAAC is also a way for our athletes to be involved and promote many community service projects.

Since joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998, Coach Musselwhite led the Lady Choctaws to a 205-152 overall record. In 1999, the Lady Choctaws finished 22-9, which at that time, ranked as one of the best records in school history. In 2002, the Lady Choctaws produced a 26-14 record and finished second overall after losing to East Texas Baptist in the ASC Championship game. In 2005 Musselwhite received Co-Coach of the Year honors that she shared with Louisiana College coach Tim Whitman. The 2006 season concluded with the Lady Choctaws finishing with a 24-16 overall record and a third place finish after losing in the semi-final game of the ASC Championship tournament. Several Lady Choctaws received post season honors and Musselwhite was named the East Division “Coach of the Year.” Musselwhite attributes the programs success to the growth of the sport of fastpitch softball. “When I started coaching at Mississippi College, fastpitch softball was new to most of the high schools in Mississippi and non existant at the junior college level. The emergence of fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport drew immediate recognition to the sport. The NCAA quickly followed by adding the sport as a championship sport and it has not stopped growing since.

PERSONAL A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Musselwhite received her Bachelor of Education degree from Mississippi College in December of 1994 and completed her Masters of Education in August of 1996. Musselwhite was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006. Musselwhite also serves an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and has been a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.

Serving as the Compliance Officer, Musselwhite is responsible for certifying the eligibility for the more than 400 student-athletes on campus as well as serving as a campus liaison between Mississippi College, the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA regarding ever changing rules and regulations. “I am very fortunate to be able to continue my career at Mississippi College in this role. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with Mike Jones, our coaches and our staff and to be a part of such a successful program.”

COACHING Before being named Assistant Athletic Director in the Fall of 2006, Musselwhite served as the Head Softball Coach at Mississippi College. After completing a four year career and serving one as a graduate assistant, Musselwhite took over the softball program in its Division III inception and guided the program to 7 consecutive 20+ win seasons and 9 winning seasons in a row. As the Head Softball coach, Musselwhite tried to be an ambassador for the sport of softball by being a community resource. Musselwhite conducted many player clinics as well as coach’s clinics trying to improve the knowledge level and skill level of players and coaches around the state of Mississippi.

SEASON PREVIEW Season Outlook

POSTS The Lady Choctaws will be breaking in four new players at the post to go with returning senior CARA BEVERIN. The Mississippi Gulf Coast transfer played in 21 games for MC last season, starting one. She scored a season-high six points and pulled down four rebounds against Concordia Texas. The Lady Choctaws will need her size, experience and touch around the basket as they break in the new players on the block.

The Mississippi College women’s basketball team is one that is used to a long line of success, especially under the leadership of head coach Paul Allen Duke, who enters his 19th season at the helm. The winningest coach in MC history earned his 300th win in the 2011-12 season and brought back a squad last season that boasted nine seniors and five players that had been in the program for four years. Injuries took their toll as the season progressed, and the Lady Choctaws suffered through their first losing season since 1992-93. With a brand new team in 2013-14 that only has five returners and only three players that played more than three games last season, the Lady Choctaws will lean heavily on a talented recruiting class they feel strongly about.

Carolyn Harris

POINT GUARD At point guard, the Lady Choctaws return the services of sophomore SHANIQUA LOVE, who was forced into action for the final three games of the season after multiple injuries at the position. Love scored 18 points and shot 54% (7-of-13) from the floor in those three home games. She scored a season-high eight points in the season finale against nationallyranked Louisiana College. She has been injured in the preseason, however, but the coaches have been impressed with her knowledge of the system she has brought back from last season. MC has two newcomers that will step right in and contribute in junior LAUREN BETHLY and freshman OLIVIA MABRY. Bethly is a transfer from the University of Mobile, where she averaged five points, two assists and two steals per game. She was named to the Southern States Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team in 2011-12. Bethly is an explosive player that can get to the basket and finish. Her intelligence and defensive ability set her apart as a leader for this team. Mabry is a rookie from Lamar School in Meridian, Miss., where she starred on basketball court and the soccer field. She averaged 20 points and five assists per game and was named the MAIS Female Athlete of the Year. Mabry is an extremely intelligent player that has the potential to leave a huge mark on this program.

WINGS On the outside, the Choctaws have a couple of players back that saw extended action last season, as senior ALEXUS STIRGUS and junior CAROLYN HARRIS return to the team. Stirgus earned six starts last season and played 17.2 minutes per game. She scored a season-high eight points against Howard Payne and had a season-high five assists against LeTourneau. Stirgus is a much-improved player after the off-season and she is playing with more confidence as she heads into her senior season. Harris played in nine games last season and averaged 9.2 minutes per contest. She is an athletic wing that can get to the basket and rebound with anyone on the team. She will provide some much-needed experience at a position with several newcomers. Two transfers that are expected to play big roles on this year’s team are juniors JAIANAH MATTHEW and SHUNTEQUA LOFTON. Matthew has been the top shooter on the team in the preseason and is an excellent all-around player. She sees the floor very well from the wing and does a great job of keeping her teammates involved. She was an All-State selection at East Central Community College last season. Lofton is an outstanding rebounder that makes her presence known on the glass. The Mississippi Delta transer is a strong and quick player that will not be outworked on the boards.

Joining Beverin will be fellow senior DOMINIQUE WALKER, who transferred from Division I Mississippi Valley State following her junior year. She started seven games for the Devilettes and scored 53 points with 38 rebounds. Walker averaged in double-figures when she played at Mississippi Delta her first two seasons in college. She is a great shooter that can step out to the wing and knock down shots. Walker is the scorer and leader the Lady Choctaws will need on this brand new team. Junior transfer CASSIE BERRY will provide some depth on the block for the Lady Choctaws. She averaged nine points and five rebounds per game at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Cassie is an aggressive player that attacks the boards in pursuit of every rebound. Rounding out the post players are sophomore JANELL HARVILLE and freshman CAREY CROZIER. Harville spent last season learning the system and her improvement has shown since the beginning of her freshman campaign. Crozier gives the Lady Choctaws good size down low, and she has continued to get better as the preseason has progressed.

OUTLOOK This will be the final season for the Lady Choctaws in the American Southwest Conference and Division III. They have had great success in their 17 years, and they will look for one final great showing as they transition into the Gulf South Conference and Division II. MC advanced to 13 of 15 ASC Tournaments and advanced to the conference championship game in 2003. The 2013-14 team is one that new on the floor, but the talent is there to make a run at an ASC title.

MC has three freshmen on the wings that will be integral to the success of this years’ squad. MOLLIE BLAIR from Jackson Academy could see some starts this year after a great career for coach Jan Sojourner and the Lady Raiders. She averaged 13 points and four rebounds as a senior. The three-time All-Conference selection was named to the All-MAIS Team and was an All-Star selection in her final year. She is a smart player that always seems to be in the right spot on the floor.

Alexus Stirgus

8

Also joining Blair as freshmen on the outside are MACKAYLA DYKES and TORI EARNHART. Dykes is one of the top shooters on the team and can be versatile by playing the point guard position. She comes from Bowling Green School where she was the District MVP each of her four seasons. Earnhart is from The Veritas School where she was named an MAIS Basketball and Softball All-Star.

Paul Allen

DUKE

Head Coach

Paul Allen Duke is heading into his 19th season as head coach of the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. In 18 seasons, Duke has an impressive 320-138 (.699) record, an average of more than 17 wins a season. His winning percentage is among the best Division III coaches in the country. The 2012-13 season was one that saw injuries really take a toll on Duke and the Lady Choctaws. Three season-ending injuries kept MC out of the ASC Tournament, snapping a streak of 10 consecutive years in the postseason. Seniors Traci Rodgers, Valeri Stewart and Ebony Williams were All-ASC selections following the season. In the 2011-12 season, the Lady Choctaws made their 10th consecutive American Southwest Conference Tournament and 13th appearance in 14 tries. MC won 10 of their final 14 games to close the season with a 16-10 overall record, and Duke won his 300th career game. Elizabeth Brooks, Caitlin Brown, Ebony Williams, and Madelyn Cross each earned All-ASC honors. The 2010-11 season saw Paul Allen lead the Lady Choctaws to their ninth consecutive ASC Tournament. The Lady Choctaws finished the season 17-9 overall and 12-8 in the ASC, which landed them the #3 seed in the ASC East. MC led the conference in field goal percentage (.480) and finished second in scoring (71.6 ppg) and three-point field goal percentage (.350). Jalessa Taylor, Randa Lee, and Jennifer Wair each earned All-ASC honors with Taylor being named First Team All-ASC and Wair earning East Division Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2009-10, Duke saw the Lady Choctaws qualify for the ASC Tournament and break the record for threepoint attempts in a season with 368, with the previous record being 314. The Lady Choctaws went 10-1 at the “Golden Dome” and had four players named to All-ASC Teams, led by Jalessa Taylor with a First Team All-East Division selection. Jennifer Wair was named the ASC East Division Newcomer of the Year. The 2008-09 season was arguably the most successful in Coach Duke’s career as the Lady Choctaws finished 22-5 and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Coach Duke’s team finished first in the nation in field goal percentage (47.1) and three point field goal percentage (40.1). Rosemary Green was named to the All-ASC First Team, while Green and Anesia McBride were East Division First Team selections. Brittany Dukes, Casie Hilton and Anna Patterson also earned All-ASC honors. In the 2007-08 season, Coach Duke led a team to the #2 seed in the ASC East after a 2-6 start to the year. For his efforts, Duke was named Tri-Coach of the Year as his team finished 15-11 with a trip to the ASC Tournament. In the 2006-07 season, Duke became the all-time winningest coach in Mississippi College history with a 56-41 win over Louisiana College on January 16th in Pineville. The Lady Choctaws made an appearance in the conference tournament.

12

In 2005-06, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 19-7 season and their third American Southwest Conference East Division title in four seasons. The Lady Choctaws also made their ninth appearance in the ASC Championship Tournament in ten seasons. In 2004-05, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 17-9 record and another appearance in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. The 2003-04 season saw the Lady Choctaws finish with an overall record of 22-4 and an American Southwest Conference Eastern Division title for the third time in four years. Duke coached his third ASC Player of the Year in Lacey Palomarez. Former players Chastidy Sandifer and Latoya Hopson also were recipient’s of the award under Duke’s leadership. Six players were selected to the conference All-Academic team, as well. In 2002-03, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 22-4 season, an ASC East Division title and appearance in the ASC Tournament. Lacey Palomarez was the league’s choice as the ASC Freshman of the Year under Duke’s guidance. During the 2001 season, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 20-5 season and a 15-3 record in ASC divisional play. The twenty-win season was the second for Duke at Mississippi College and the first since 1998. The Lady Choctaws won the ASC East Division and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA tournament. That team had four different players selected to the ASC All-Conference team. Under the direction of Duke, the Lady Choctaws claimed a share of the 1997-98 American Southwest Championship and finished with a 21-4 record. The Lady Choctaws began the 1998-99 season with a winning streak of 12 games and continued the streak through an impressive 27 games, the longest winning

streak in the Lady Choctaw basketball history. That squad finished with a record of 18-7. Duke has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year in five seasons. Coach Duke has made a habit of coaching players who finish the season receiving postseason honors. Before entering the NCAA Division III ranks, Duke had much success in the Gulf South Conference and at the NCAA Division II level. Duke had two players to make the All Gulf South Conference Team and one to make the All-South Regional Second Team. Prior to becoming head coach, Duke served the university as the assistant women’s basketball coach for seven seasons. As assistant coach, Duke was part of the Lady Choctaws team that finished in the finals of the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. He also served as a graduate assistant under Mike Jones for one year. Before arriving at Mississippi College, Duke coached at Woodland Hills in Jackson (19861987), at St. Andrews Episcopal School in Jackson (1980-1985), and at Sylva Bay High School before that where he served as the athletic director, head football coach, and head coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Duke has worked basketball camps all across the country. He has worked at North Carolina University (Dean Smith), Mississippi State University (Bob Boyd), Villanova University (Rollie Massimino), and Mississippi College (Mike Jones). Duke attended Mississippi State University, where he played for one year, and completed his bachelor of science degree in 1976. He received a master of education degree at Mississippi College in 1987. Paul Allen is married to the former Cathy Lovvorn.

2012-13 Season Review The 2012-13 MC women’s basketball season was abnormal because for only the second time in 15 years, the Lady Choctaws did not qualify for the ASC Tournament. MC suffered through three season-ending injuries to starters and dropped their final five games to finish below .500 for the first time in head coach Paul Allen Duke’s 18-year career.

Traci Rodgers wrapped up a stellar fouryear career with an All-ASC Honorable Mention selection. She averaged 8.6 points per game and scored in doublefigures 11 times. Valeri Stewart was named the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year capping a career in which she has the best free throw shooting percentage in school history at .862.

The season started promisingly as MC had nine seniors on the team and five players with at three years of experience in the program. The continuity showed early as the Lady Choctaws were 6-2 out of the gate, including three straight wins over Sul Ross State, Concordia Texas and Mary Hardin-Baylor. Over the first eight games, MC had six different leading scorers.

Seniors Elizabeth Brooks, Caitlin Brown and England also finished up four-year careers in the 2012-13 season. Brooks ranks second in school history in steals with 174 and fifth in three-pointers attempted (180) and made (60). Brown was the team’s leading scorer in 201112 with 9.7 points per game, shooting 41% from the floor and pulling down 4.3 rebounds per game. England started 14 games for MC in 2013-14 and averaged 3.1 points per game and shot 72% from the free throw line.

MC would drop the next three contests, however, before winning two straight at home against Texas Lutheran and Schreiner. MC would have another two-game win streak against Texas Dallas and East Texas Baptist, but injuries to forward Jamie Lack and guard Lindsay England took their toll and the Lady Choctaws won just one of their final seven games. Senior Ebony Williams led the Lady Choctaws with 11.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, earning a spot on the ASC AllEast Division First Team. She scored in double-figures in 15 of 25 games ranked second in the league in field goal percentage (.539) and third in rebounding.

Also closing out their careers were seniors Whitney Enis, Lack and Kristin Newsome. Enis was a transfer from Hardin-Simmons and averaged 5.8 points per game, shooting 34% from the threepoint line in her lone season. Lack started eight games for MC and averaged 6.9 points per game, while going 27-of30 from the free throw line. Newsome struggled through injury in her senior season, but averaged 6.2 points and 4.9 rebounds as a junior in 2011-12.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, enters its 18th season with the 2013-14 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today's present group of 14 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states -- Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi -- the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference has a multidimensional mission to create an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for the conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2013-14 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler.
