ASHLEY GREENWAY 1992-2013

The Mississippi College Athletic Department was deeply saddened to announce the death of Ashley Greenway, 20, of Southaven, Miss., who passed away at a Jackson hospital on Wednesday, September 4th, 2013. A nursing major, MC junior and standout player on the Lady Choctaws softball and soccer teams, Ashley died at the Central Mississippi Medical Center emergency room after being rushed by ambulance soon after becoming ill in her residence hall room. Our thoughts and prayers will contiune to be with Ashley's family, friends and the entire Mississippi College community during this time of loss.

A memorial service and candlelight vigil was held on Wednesday, September 11th in Ashley’s honor. Students remembered Ashley in song, laughter and stories. The Lady Choctaw soccer team has dedicated the 2013 season to Ashley with the phrase, “All Out for Ash”. Ashley was a two-year player on the softball and soccer teams at Mississippi College. She played in 74 softball games, starting 63 over her career. Greenway had a career batting average of .283 with three doubles, one triple and 19 RBI. In 2013, she hit .279 and finished the season with 11 stolen bases.

INTERVIEW REQUESTS To request an interview with Coach Longabaugh or any assistant coaches, do so by contacting the SID via email or by phone at 601-925-3234. Coaches are available to the media but not during practice. Once practice is completed, all requests can be filled. On Choctaw game days, coaches and players are available following a ten minute cooling off period. No interviews can be conducted on game days prior to the game. Phone interviews with players and coaches are also possible by contacting the SID. The best time to request a player or coach for a phone interview is in the morning.

OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION The Mississippi College Office of Sports Information is located in the upper level of A. E. Wood Coliseum. A. E. Wood Coliseum, also known as the “Golden Dome”, is one of the most recognizable structures in the Clinton community. The office is the first door on the right after entering the office hallway.

Athletic Director jones01@mc.edu Mike Jones is stepping into his 13th season as the full-time athletic director after an incredibly successful basketball career at MC. Jones returned to his position as the full-time athletic director in 2008 after stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball program following the 2007-08 season. During his 20-year coaching career, including sixteen seasons at MC, the Hall of Fame coach put together a career record of 436-130 (.770). As athletic director, Jones has helped build one of the top athletic departments in the American Southwest Conference. In 12 years overseeing the athletics department, he has given all of MC’s programs an opportunity for success with improved facilities through fund-raising. In the 2009-10 season, every MC athletics team qualified for postseason play, and all but two teams had winning records. Under his leadership, the athletics department was able to raise over one million dollars for the addition of an artificial playing surface to the football field and new surrounding track facility. Under his watch, a new soccer complex was constructed in 2005 and a new fieldhouse was constructed in 2011. Major renovations were also made to A.E. Wood Coliseum in 2008. Coach Jones helped raise over $160,000 at the MC Athletics Dinner in 2012, where former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker. The Athletics Dinner has hosted speakers such as Gene Stallings, Oakland A’s outfielder Seth Smith, Robert Khayat, Sylvester Croom, Mike Bianco, and Jeff Brantley. After a four-year hiatus, Coach Jones returned to the bench for two seasons from 2006-08 where his Choctaws compiled a 46-9 record overall and a 35-5 conference mark. In the ‘06-’07 season, Jones led MC to a third consecutive ASC Championship and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III Tournament. In his first round as head coach of the Choctaws, Jones led MC to 14 consecutive winning seasons overall, including five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at his alma mater. Jones led MC to four ASC championships in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2007. In the 2007 season, the Choctaws reached as high as a #3 national ranking. Coach Jones earned three ASC Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams at the end of the season. Emphasizing defense, the Choctaws led the ASC in scoring and field goal percentage defense in 2007. Mike made the move to Mississippi College following a four-year stint at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he dominated the state and earned national prestige. During his tenure, Jones’ teams were consistently ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Top-Twenty Poll. He took teams to the National Junior College Tournament where the 1988 team finished seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1998 and were two-time Region 23 Champions.

Jones’ coaching success took no one by surprise after his stellar background as an assistant. Before going to Co-Lin, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at MC and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a Master of Education in School Administration in 1977. Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to Jane Jones of New Hebron. They have two children, a son Michael and a daughter Mandy. Michael is married to their daughter-in-law Amy. Mandy is married to their son-in-law Taylor Sisson. Coach Jones has four grandchildren, Zach, Ansley Kate, Will and Charlotte.

MC Athletics Mission Statement The philosophy of intercollegiate athletics at Mississippi College is inherent to, and compatible with, the vision statement of Mississippi College. ROBERT P. LONGABAUGH FIELD and GIRLING FIELD HOUSE Robert P. Longabaugh Field was opened in 2006 and serves as the men and women’s soccer game field. The playing surface is natural grass and the facility is equipped with covered team benches and scorer’s table, concessions and restroom facilities. Bleacher seating is available as well as lots of open areas that are suitable for lawn chairs on top of the hill on the south end of the facility. The facility was made possible through the generous contributions of Jewell Longabaugh in memory of her late husband Robert P. Longabaugh who “loved life an loved Mississippi College”. Mr. Longabaugh was the father of Head Coach Darryl Longabaugh, the only coach in the history of the women’s soccer program. Beginning at the end of 2010, construction was started on the Robert G.W. Girling III Field House. The facility is one of the top soccer facilities in the country with a locker room for the men’s and women’s teams. The building also has three coaches offices, a media room, laundry facilities, and an athletic training room. The fieldhouse was made possible by the generous donations of the Girling family and other friends and family of the Choctaw programs.

Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division III universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. The facility was originally furnished with state of the art strength equipment made possible by the donation of Mrs. Aline Williams in memory of her husband Charles H. Williams. In 2011, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. The field can also be seen from inside the weight room with wall to wall windows on three sides of the facility.

VERRET Head Athletic Trainer verret@mc.edu Matt Verret enters his seventh year at Mississippi College as the head athletic trainer. Verret is responsible for overseeing 16 different schoolsponsored sports. Verret joined the staff at Mississippi College after a one year stint as the assistant athletic trainer at Louisiana College where he also served as the men’s basketball strength coach. Verret worked primarily with football and men’s basketball while with the Wildcats. Verret brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Choctaw staff. Prior to his work at Louisiana College, Verret worked one year as the head athletic trainer at Bishop MacNamara High School of the Chicago Catholic League through the Orthopedic Associates of Kankakee. He also spent two years as the head athletic trainer with the Columbus River Dragons of the NBA D-League. There he worked under head coach and former Mississippi State All-American, Jeff Malone. As a graduate assistant, Verret worked 1 1/2 years at Mississippi State University as the primary trainer for the softball program. He received his Master of Science degree in Sport Administration at MSU after receiving his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he worked as a student assistant with the Tigers’ athletic training staff. Verret also has experience as an intern athletic trainer with the Chicago Bears of the National Football League and as a staff athletic trainer with the Manning Passing Academy. He is certified as an athletic trainer through the NATABOC and a performance enhancement specialist through the NASM.

Alicia Thornburg enters her second season as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Mississippi College. Thornburg spent the last two years as a graduate assistant in the department. Alicia will be the main contact for the women's soccer and men's and women's basketball teams. In her two years as a G.A., she spent time working with the men's soccer team and the men's and women's tennis squads. Prior to her time at Mississippi College, Alicia attended the University of Toledo for one year. She earned her Emergency Medical Technician - Basic degree from the H. Councill Thenholm State Technical College in 2008. Thornburg earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2007. She is also a member of the National and Mississippi Athletic Training Associations. Alicia is originally from Mantachie, MS. She is married to Robert Thornburg and is the daughter of Mark and Debbie Hopper. She is a member of Morrison Heights Baptist Church and a volunteer at the food pantry called Second Harvest.

2013 Lady Choctaw Soccer

Pushing the starters for playing time are freshmen Brittney Burke, Sara Hodges, and Madison Leonard. Burke will look to split time between forward and midfield. The Metairie, La. native earned a First Team All-District Team selection in 2012, a Second Team All-District Team selection in 2009 and 2010, and was a part of the 2010 State Championship team. Hodges earned All-Conference Team selections in soccer and basketball while playing at Timothy Christian High School in Elmhurst, Ill.

The Mississippi College women’s soccer team finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 14-3-3 that included shutouts in 10 of the 20 games. The Lady Choctaws finished 9-2-1 in the conference to earn a bid to the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the 10th time in 11 years. After a 2-0 win over East Texas Baptist, the Lady Choctaws fell to Texas-Tyler in a shootout in the semifinals. “Right now we are a little stressed over the amount of injuries on the team,” said Coach Darryl Longabaugh about the upcoming season. “As we move forward, we are worried about some of our key starters with injuries, but confident that there is enough time for them to recuperate before conference play begins.”

FORWARDS The front line is looking solid under the leadership of junior Macey Lee. Lee was recently named ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after ranking third in the league with 14 points and seven assists. The Pearl, Miss. native scored game-winning goals against Berry, Howard Payne, LeTourneau, and East Texas Baptist (ASC Tournament game). She earned a First Team All-ASC selection and received ASC All-Academic Honors. Caitlin Chapman, the only senior for the Lady Choctaws, and fellow junior Kaitlyn Kiss are returning to the forward position, as well. Chapman played in 19 games last season and tallied six goals on the year, including a hat trick in a 10-1 win over the Ozarks. The Seminole, Fla. native also earned ASC All-Academic Honors. Kiss ranked fourth in the conference with eight assists and recorded six goals, four of which were game-winners. The Lake Mary, Fla. native earned a Second Team All-ASC selection.

DEFENDERS

Caitlin Chapman Also returning for the Lady Choctaws are sophomores Becca Dupuy and Simone Willis. Dupuy (West Monroe, La.) saw action in 16 games last season and assisted on four goals. Willis (West Monroe, La.) played in 12 games as a freshman and found the back of the net twice in victories over Oglethorpe and Texas Lutheran. Challenging the returners for starting positions are sophomore transfers Amanda Allen and Autumn Bolton, along with freshman Kristen Little. “Amanda Allen can be really dangerous paired with Macey,” stated Coach Longabaugh. The New Orleans, La. native tallied 13 goals in her freshman season at Spring Hill College, which ranked second on the team for goals scored. Bolton (Tracey, Calif.) played in 22 games at San Joaquin Delta College, recording six goals and seven assists. Little is a local product that earned the Best Defensive Player Award in her senior season at Clinton High School.

MIDFIELD

With the loss of Megan Whitten and Hillary Fowler, there are still many questions to be answered with the defense. “The biggest concern this year is the defense,” said Coach Longabaugh. “We have talent in the back and a lot of returners that have seen some playing time in previous seasons, but it still a project in the works.” Lady Choctaw returners include juniors Kaileigh Hunt, Allison Kiss, and Alex Vohs and sophomore Meghan Dodge. Hunt (Pearl, Miss.) played in 14 games, starting in three for the Lady Choctaws. Kiss (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Vohs (Fenton, Mo.) both saw action in 15 games and earned ASC All-Academic Honors. Dodge (Palm Harbor, Fla.) stepped up last year as a freshman to play in 11 games and tallied a goal in a victory over East Texas Baptist. Also returning to the back line are junior Stacy Swezey and sophomore Kelly O’Mahoney. Swezey was injured going into last season, but was able to get some playing time in 12 games. The Hudson, Fla. native is battling another injury that she will have to overcome in order to fight for a starting position. After missing the entire season due to a concussion, O’Mahoney (Mandeville, La.) is healthy and ready to step up as a leader on the back line.

Leading the charge in the midfield are returning juniors Melanie Benner, Nicole McKissack, and Lauren Prescott. Benner tallied 21 points ranking second on the team and in the top 10 in the conference. The Seminole, Fla. native earned First Team All-ASC selection and earned NSCAA DIII Second Team All-West Region selection. McKissack (Madison, Miss.) looks to return to the midfield position after leading a defense that pitched ten shutouts last season. Prescott (Ruston, La.) started in all 20 games for the Lady Choctaws and scored three goals while assisting on two others.

Also returning to help in the midfield are junior Stephanie Stapleton and sophomore Savannah Carpenter. As a freshman, Stapleton (Pearl, Miss.) played in 15 games for the Lady Choctaws and earned ASC All-Academic Honors. Carpenter (Hurley, Miss.) recorded a goal in a victory over East Texas Baptist and assisted on one other in a win over the Ozarks.

A few new additions to the back line include freshmen Lauren Hughes and Jennifer Millholland. Hughes (Pensacola, Fla.) played on the 2013 3A Regional Championship Team and the 2012 3A District Championship Team at West Florida High School. Millholland earned a 2013 All-County Team selection and 2011 All-Region Team selection while playing at Ola High School. The Atlanta, Ga. native is looking to overcome a preseason injury before the season begins.

GOALKEEPERS The Lady Choctaws return only one goalkeeper for the 2013 season. Junior Brianna Blackwell only allowed one goal over 463:38 for a 0.19 goals against average. “Brianna is fit as a beast and really getting things done in this position,” expressed Coach Longabaugh. The Pearl, Miss. native made 12 saves on the year and pitched three shutouts.

Although Blackwell is the only returner, the Lady Choctaw newcomers have provided depth for the goalkeeper position. Freshmen Melanie Hummert , Brittany O’Leary, and Alex Selby will have no issues in backing up Blackwell in the net. Hummert (Carrollton, Texas) earned an Honorable Mention for 5-5A and was first in club league for District II Lake Highlands. O’Leary tallied 54 saves and nine shutouts at River Ridge High School in New Port Ricky, Fla. Selby (Atoka, Tenn.) earned All-District Team selections for four years and earned All-Tournament Team selections in 2009 and 2012. “I am confident in the talent we have on the team,” said Coach Longabaugh. “Although we have some concerns, we could be as deep as we’ve ever been and we could have the most talented team we’ve ever had.”

2013 AT A GLANCE

- The Lady Choctaws open the season with a tough tournament in Memphis as they play Principia and #4 Washington-St. Louis. It is the first meeting between MC and their two opponents. - Altogether, the Lady Choctaws have four firsttime opponents on the 2013 schedule. They will host Talladega College (Sept. 10) and Wiley College (Sept. 22) at Longabaugh Field. - MC will face Delta State, a future Gulf South Conference opponent, on September 5th. The Lady Choctaws won the only other meeting with the Lady Statesmen in 2009 when they picked up a 1-0 victory in Clinton. - The Lady Choctaws will then host a mini-tournament on September 13th and 14th when they face Sewanee and Berry College. East Texas Baptist will make the trip over the Clinton and face the same two teams. - On September 17th, MC will make the trip to Jackson to face Millsaps. The Lady Choctaws are 15-1-1 all-time against the Lady Majors, with the only loss coming in 2009 by a score of 1-0. - The Lady Choctaws will then hit the road to begin play against American Southwest Conference teams when they travel to Mary HardinBaylor and Concordia Texas. MC is a combined 16-3-1 against the Texas teams.

- MC will then return home to open October with matches against Texas-Tyler and LeTourneau. UT-Tyler eliminated the Lady Choctaws from the ASC Tournament last season, winning in a shootout. MC is 19-2 all-time against LeTourneau, winning the last seven in the series, only allowing one goal over the last seven meetings. - The Lady Choctaws will then hit the road for their longest road streak of the season, playing four straight away from Longabaugh Field. They will travel to Howard Payne and nationalpowehouse Hardin-Simmons on October 11th and 12th. They will then travel to BirminghamSouthern for a mid-week tilt before going to East Texas Baptist on October 19th.

- MC will finish the season with three straight home games, hosting Ozarks and Texas-Dallas on the final weekend in October. MC is 18-2 against Ozarks, winning the last 12 meetings and pitching shutouts in seven straight matches. The Lady Choctaws will close out the regular season against Louisiana College on November 2nd. They will honor senior Cailtlin Chapman prior to the match. - With the move to Division II, the Lady Choctaws will not be eligible for ASC postseason play, but they can compete for the National Christian College Athletic Association championship.

LONGABAUGH Head Coach Darryl Longabaugh is entering his 17th season at the helm of the Lady Choctaw soccer program as the only women’s soccer coach in Mississippi College history. Longabaugh helped get the program started as the inaugural coach in 1997 and has built one of the most successful programs in the American Southwest Conference. It did not take Longabaugh long to develop one of the ASC’s most consistent soccer programs and earn his status as one of the league’s top coaches. Four times he has been named ASC East Division Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003. The 2012 season saw the Lady Choctaws return to the ASC Tournament after a brief hiatus in 2011. MC won at least 14 games for the fifth time in 16 seasons under Longabaugh. The Lady Choctaws advanced to the semifinals of the ASC Tournament, falling to Texas-Tyler in a shootout. The MC defense was stifling in 2012, posting 10 shutouts in 20 matches. Senior Megan Whitten and sophomore Melanie Benner each earned NSCAA All-Region honors and joined Macey Lee as First Team All-ASC selections. In all, seven Lady Choctaws earned All-ASC honors. Arguably, the most impressive feat by the Lady Choctaws was that 21 of 36 members of the team earned ASC All-Academic honors. In 2011, the Lady Choctaws clinched their 13th consecutive winning season in the tough American Southwest Conference. MC had six players earn All-Conference honors, led by three on the Second Team, including senior Lesly Melo, junior Megan Whitten, and freshman Macey Lee. Senior Hannah Langley was given the ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award, recognizing one male and one female student-athlete in the conference who best displays the attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in their athletic, academic and life pursuits. Over the 13 years the award has been given out, four Lady Choctaw soccer players have earned the honor.

In 2005, his Lady Choctaws finished the season with an 11-7 record and earned an appearance in the ASC Championship Tournament for the third consecutive season. Under his tutelage, seven Lady Choctaws earned post-season honors including First Team All-ASC selection Kelley Kirby. In addition, Kelly Morse became the first Lady Choctaw soccer player to earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. In 2004, the Lady Choctaws finished the year with a 14-6 overall record that included a trip to the ASC Championship Tournament semifinal round where they lost to eventual ASC Champion Hardin-Simmons 2-0. The season resulted in seven different Lady Choctaws earning All-ASC honors including two first team selections in Kristy Morse and ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year Kellie Kirby. In 2003, the Lady Choctaws won a school-record (at the time) 16 games and set numerous other records including goals scored in a season and goals scored in a game (15, Jackson State). That same year they were regionally ranked by both the NCAA and NSCAA as high as 5th. Longabaugh has helped develop some of the ASC’s top talent. Kemily Weimer (2002), Jennifer Benson (2003) and Kellie Kirby (2004) have been named the ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year. Kellie Kirby was also named to the NSCAA Second team All-Region after leading the team in goals scored with 18 in 2004. Courtney Shires (1997) and April Smith (2003) were named the ASC Defensive Player of the Year. Carrie Kirk (2006), Lauren Cooper (2007), and Hannah Langley (2008) have all been named ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year. Prior to taking the reins of the women’s program, Longabaugh worked with the men’s team for four seasons as an assistant and goalkeeper coach. He also has extensive experience away from Mississippi College coaching top high school talent and Division I select teams. Longabaugh has worked in international soccer ministry teams that have toured Mexico, Costa Rico, Antigua, Mexico, and Venezuela. Longabaugh is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He played at Clinton High School in Clinton, MS and Hinds Junior College, Raymond, MS before playing at Mississippi College. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Social Science degree from Mississippi College. He currently holds his U.S.S.F National D Coaching License. Darryl is married to the former Kimberly Girod and the two have a fiveyear old son, Garet.

In the 2010, the Lady Choctaws qualified for their eighth straight ASC Tournament with a 12-5-2 record and #5 seed in the playoffs. MC was bounced out of the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Howard Payne in the first round. Seven Lady Choctaws earned All-ASC honors: Kasey Ambrose, Molly Dearborn, Hollye Henderson, Lesly Melo, Liz Miller, Megan Whitten, and Bethany Roberson. The 2009 season was another successful one for the Lady Choctaws as they advanced to their seventh consecutive ASC Tournament after an 11-5-3 finish and a #3 seed. Carrie Kirk earned Defensive Player of the Year honors as five Lady Choctaws overall earned All-ASC honors. Kirk was named to the All-ASC First Team for the fourth time in her career. In 2008, the Lady Choctaws finished 17-4 with an 11-2 conference mark that earned MC a #3 seed in the ASC Tournament. Seven Lady Choctaws earned All-ASC selections with Carrie Kirk earning the inaugural ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year Award. Hannah Langley was named ASC Freshman Defender of the Year while Kirk was named to the NSCAA All-South Region Third Team. In 2007, the Lady Choctaws finished with a 13-6 record, which earned them the #4 seed in the ASC Tournament. It was the fifth consecutive tournament appearance for Longabaugh and the Lady Choctaws. MC placed seven players on the All-Conference teams, including three players with First Team selections: Laura Leigh Ellis, Kellie Kirby, and Carrie Kirk. In 2006, the Lady Choctaws earned a 14-6 record, which was good enough for a #4 seed in the conference tournament. MC saw six players earn All-ASC honors, and Jennifer Benson became the all-time leading goal scorer in school history. Laura Leigh Ellis and Carrie Kirk earned First Team All-ASC honors with Kirk earning the Defensive Freshman of the Year Award.

Adam Johnson is entering his third season as the assistant coach for the Lady Choctaws.

Louise Arseneault is entering her third season as the graduate assistant for the Mississippi College women’s soccer team.

Having previously played semi professional soccer in England with Thackley FC and in Australia with Albion Park, he finished his playing career in 2011 as a state champion with Hinds Community College. Johnson accumulated many individual and team honors including 2 Illawarra Premier League and Grand Final Championships in 2007 and 2008 with Albion Park, and inclusion in the 2011 All Region team while at Hinds CC.

Arseneault was a four-year starter at the University of Mobile, earning Second Team All-Conference honors in 2008. Louise has played professional soccer, making five stops over the past four years: Maine Tide (2008), West Michigan Firewomen (2009), New York Magic (2010), Chelsea Metro (2011) and the Bay Area Breeze (2011).

Adam began his coaching career in 2007 with the Albion Park youth team before his move to the US. He has since been Assistant Coach at St Andrews High School in 2009-10, and Head Coach at the MAIS Championship Runners up Jackson Academy in 2011-12. Coach Johnson has served at Jackson Futbol Club as Club Coach to u11/12 boys, and U15 girls since 2009. In a coaching career spanning three continents, he has the UEFA B coaching licence from England, the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) Youth Licence, and currently the USSF National D licence in the US.

ARSENEAULT

Louise earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training from the University of Mobile. She is from Dunlop, New Brunswick, Canada and is the daughter of Michel and Suzie Arseneault.

Adam was born in Huddersfield, England. He graduated from the University of Huddersfield in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in business. Johnson also graduated with an Associates degree from Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS in 2011. Adam lives in Madison, MS with his wife and three children.

2013 Lady Choctaw Soccer

2012 Season Review The Mississippi College womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer team finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 14-3-3. The Lady Choctaws earned a bid to the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the 10th time in 11 years after finishing 9-2-1 in the conference. MC defeated East Texas Baptist, 2-0, before falling to the University of Texas at Tyler in a shootout in the semi-finals. The 2012 season was highlighted by a 10-1 victory over the Ozarks and shutouts in 10 of the 20 games. Five different Lady Choctaws were able to find the back of the net six or more times on the year, which allowed MC to finish second in the conference with 59 goals. The scoring attack was led by sophomore midfielder Macey Lee who led the conference with 14 goals and ranked second in the ASC with 35 points. The Pearl, Miss. native ranked second on the team with seven assists and was tied for first with four game-winning goals. Fellow sophomore midfielder Melanie Benner finished second on the team with eight goals and 21 points, which ranked in the top 10 in the ASC. Senior forward Christy Wyne and sophomore forward Kaitlyn Kiss each tallied six goals on the season. Wyne assisted on five other goals, while Kiss ranked fourth in the conference with eight assists. Junior forward Caitlin Chapman also recorded six goals and assisted on one other on the year.

The defense was stout, led by senior defenders Hillary Fowler and Megan Whitten. Fowler and Whitten played in all 20 matches for the Lady Choctaws to lead a defense that pitched 10 shutouts on the year. Fowler tallied two goals, while Whitten ranks 10th in program history with a total of 74 matches played. Roberson led the Lady Choctaws in the net, making 53 saves over 1400 minutes played to tally a 0.83 goals against average. She finished her career at MC ranked second in school history with 15 shutouts and 49 matches played between the posts. MC recorded the most wins in program history since 2008 and recorded every loss by a score of 2-1. The efforts of the Lady Choctaws paid off as seven players were named to ASC All-Conference Teams at the end of the season. Megan Whitten, Melanie Benner, and Macey Lee all earned First Team selections. Kaitlyn Kiss earned a Second Team selection, while Christy Wyne and Genna Shelley earned Third Team Honors. Bethany Roberson earned an Honorable Mention and was named one of three ASC Sportsmanship Athletes of the Year. Benner and Whitten also earned NSCAA All-West Region Team selections. Although not the biggest team on campus, the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soccer team had the most players earn ASC All-Academic Honors, with 21 Lady Choctaws receiving the award.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, enters its 18th season with the 2013-14 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today's present group of 14 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states -- Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi -- the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference has a multidimensional mission to create an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for the conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2013-14 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas and University of Texas at Tyler. RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons has been predicted to win its 11th consecutive and 16th overall American Southwest Conference women’s soccer title, it was announced on Tuesday (Aug. 20) by the conference office after a vote of the league’s 11 head coaches and sports information directors. Taking 2013 preseason player of the year honors were MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE’S MACEY LEE and HardinSimmons Courtney Cramer. Hardin-Simmons, which went 18-1-2 overall (12-0-0 ASC) and reached the sectional round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship last season, totaled 239 points and received all but three of the 22 possible first-place votes to be the favorite in the annual preseason poll. Head coach Marcus Wood’s Cowgirls have gone 157 games without losing to a conference opponent and claimed nine consecutive ASC regular season crowns. HSU, which won the national title in 2010, led the league with 89 goals last season – 30 more than anyone else in the ASC. The Cowgirls were scored on just eight times. Texas-Tyler (14-5-1, 11-1-0 ASC) was picked to finish as the runner-up with 218 points and landed two first-place votes. Head coach Stefani Webb’s Patriots reached the conference title game last season and took HSU to overtime in the regular season before falling, 2-1. Two-time conference champion Texas-Dallas (11-5-2, 7-3-2 ASC) was the choice for third place with 188 points and received the final first-place vote. MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE (14-3-3, 9-2-1 ASC) was just one point behind UTD to be the fourth-place selection. East Texas Baptist (8-7-1, 6-5-1 ASC) totaled 136 points to be in the fifth position and Concordia Texas (9-6-3, 7-3-2 ASC) had 125 points to round out what would be the league’s six teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament. Howard Payne had 112 points to be the seventh-place pick. Mary Hardin-Baylor (106 pts.) was eighth, followed by Louisiana College (68 pts.), LeTourneau (44 pts.) and Ozarks (29 pts.). Lee (Pearl, Miss. / PHS), a 5-foot-6 junior forward, has been named ASC Preseason Offensive Player after posting the third most points in the league last season with 14 goals and seven assists. Four of her goals were of the game-winning variety. Cramer (Abilene, Texas / Wylie HS), a 5-foot-7 senior defender, has been named as ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed only 0.38 goals per game and produced 15 shutouts last season – both top marks in the conference. Cramer also found the back of the net 14 times. Lee and Cramer, whose goal totals tied for best in the conference, were each first team all-ASC selections last season. Cramer was the defensive player of the year. The 2013 ASC season – the 18th in league history – begins as early as Aug. 30. The six-team, single elimination conference tournament is slated for Nov. 7-10 – with an off day on Nov. 9 – at the site of the regular season champion. RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons teammates Katie Kuykendall and Courtney Cramer won player of the year awards to highlight the 2012 American Southwest Conference women’s soccer awards, the ASC office announced on Thursday (Nov. 8) after a vote of the league’s head coaches. asc soccer women's Kuykendall (Weatherford, Texas / WHS) was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. She led the conference with 43 points – including a league-high 21 assists – and had four game-winning goals. Kuykendall fueled an offense that scored 85 goals – 26 more than any other team in the ASC. Cramer (Abilene, Texas / Wylie HS) was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed just four goals over 18 matches. Cramer, who also tied for the league lead with 14 goals and added three assists, helped pave the way for 14 shutouts. Kuykendall and Cramer helped lead the Cowgirls to their 10th straight conference title, the regular season crown, a No. 2 national ranking and an undefeated record entering the NCAA Division III tournament. They were each named to the ASC All-Conference First Team. Texas-Tyler forward Chana Forstall (Keller, Texas / Central HS) and Texas Lutheran forward Sioned Kirkpatrick (San Antonio, Texas / Smithson Valley HS) split the title of ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year. Forstall scored five goals, while Kirkpatrick netted 11. Texas-Tyler defender Laurel Boyd (Austin, Texas / Westside HS) earned the title of ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year after helping produce 10 shutouts. Texas-Tyler midfielder Lindsey Edwards (Katy, Texas / KHS), Hardin-Simmons defender Christina Hartsfield (Abilene, Texas / Wylie HS) and Mississippi College goalkeeper Bethany Roberson (Collierville, Tenn. / CHS) – all seniors – shared the honor of ASC Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Texas-Tyler’s Stefani Webb was named ASC Coach of the Year after guiding a 14-win season – including an 11-1 mark in league play – and an appearance in the ASC title match.
