Dear Visitors Bureau Partners: The Visitors Bureau began 2015 with confidence and optimism that we were on a path to even greater success, and we are happy to report that 2015 exceeded our goals in nearly every tourism sector. New partnerships were key in spreading the news of Orange County, including an increased collaboration with Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, Chapel Hill/Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, UNC Friday Conference Center, 2nd Friday Artwalk, Department of Agriculture and so many more local and regional agencies. In 2015, we began work on a new interactive website and saw monumental growth in social media and new print and on-line digital campaigns that promote the four pillars of our tourism brand: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, our local food and music scene, hospitality and friendliness, and LGBT welcome. Our sales department, led by Marlene Barbera, attended new trade shows, launched an “at your service” campaign with Chapel Hill magazine which is aimed at helping wedding parties bring their events to Orange County and the department added a part time sales contractor, Mr. Rob Stern. We look forward to a new year of working on behalf of and alongside our partners to generate new business and provide a healthy economy and enviable lifestyle for all of us in Greater Chapel Hill and Orange County, including Carrboro and Hillsborough and award winning University of North Carolina. It is our privilege to share the accomplishments of 2015–16 with you!

Marketing & Advertising The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau uses multi-layered marketing campaigns, high-end publications and on-line media to sell the uniqueness of the Orange County experience and brand the area as a world-class vacation and meetings destination. This multi-media approach of print, on-line resources and social media was used to promote tourism and reach the target throughout the day. The Bureau’s overall ad campaign delivered 33 million media impressions during the fiscal year. Creatively the ads were designed to let the traveling public know that there is so much surrounding the University (the primary reason visitors stay in Chapel Hill). The ads use local talent and local events to let people know about food, music, events, nightlife and Chapel Hill’s edgy, quirky behavior.

Print Advertising

(meetings market and consumer market highlights) Print plays an important role in reaching a desired target of adults 40–60, representing 50% of the overall media buy. Print titles include Garden & Gun, Southern Living, Our State, Charlotte Magazine, Walter Magazine, Cary Magazine, and Carolina Alumni Review. Local event advertising continued in the Indy Week and The Herald-Sun to remind residents in the Raleigh, Durham metro area that Orange County hosts unique special events, ideal for visiting friends and family.
