The Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau’s Annual Report updates you on the Visitor Bureau’s progress toward increasing the area’s visitor and conference business. This 2017–2018 Annual Report provides a summary for sales, services, digital marketing and communications, administration and operations.
Dear Partners in Chapel Hill/Orange County Hospitality and Tourism:
From the Board Chair
I am honored and humbled to serve as Chair of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau as we watch the tourism industry grow throughout our region, creating jobs and opportunities for so many. I would like to thank Past Chair Rosemary Waldorf for her leadership of the Board through a period of growth and increasing influence. In my role, I will look to provide a clear mandate and vision to the tourism industry in our county. It has been said, “You have to know the past to understand the present.” Tourism in Orange County did not happen by accident. It is the result of the collaboration and hard work of board members, local business people and staff driving key priorities. Our diverse stakeholders—the Board of Orange County Commissioners, UNC, Town of Chapel Hill, Town of Carrboro, Town of Hillsborough, North Carolina High School Athletics Association, the Chapel Hill/ Carrboro Chamber of Commerce, Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce, hotels and others—have varied interests and expertise and work together to find common ground at the board level. As much as we celebrate the addition of new hotel rooms, new events and development, our work continues to ally preservation with growth, study the growing trend of Short Term Rentals in our communities and continue to capture the hearts and interest of parents, alumni, youth sports visitors, arts aficionados and the hometown and visiting teams. The year ahead will see many exciting announcements as the Visitors Bureau’s strategic direction expands. I thank the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau Board, who volunteers their time, expertise and deep understanding of the tourism economy of North Carolina and Orange County. Their contribution is indispensable in creating a clear strategic framework for the Board of Orange County Commissioners. Please review the many accomplishments of the 2017–18 year. I look forward to next year and the success it will bring.

How the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau
helps bring visitors to Orange County
SP Murray
“I marvel that there are still planners out there that don’t work with Visitors Bureaus,” says Gregg B. Balko, executive director of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering. “If you are not using a Convention and Visitors Bureau’s offerings, then you are failing to take advantage of an additional resource for your members.”
The fundamental mission of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau is the promotion of visitor and business travel, which generates overnight lodging for Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough. The Visitors Bureau is directly responsible for travel and tourism “product awareness” to visitors. Millions of direct and indirect revenue and taxes are generated into the state and local economy due to the marketing efforts of visitor bureaus across North Carolina, including the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau. The bureau’s marketing initiatives typically are achieved through the following:
• Trade association marketplaces { Orange County Bus Wrap w e lc o m e s v i s i to r s }
• Advertising
6 C H a p e l H i l l /O r a n g e C o u n t y V i s i to r s B u r e au
• Distribution of promotional and collateral material
• Direct sales • Hosting familiarization tours and other hospitality functions.
• Give meeting planners access to a wide range of services within Orange County, including but not limited to, arranging site inspections, checking hotel and meeting space availability, and linking meeting planners to expert local service providers. The target decision maker of the marketing initiative is not typically a resident in the community. Most often, if the visitor is going to spend the night in a hotel, they are from at least 50 miles away. Therefore, the marketing activity usually takes place or is directed outside the convention and visitor bureau’s community. The Visitors Bureau is funded by hotel occupancy taxes.

TerraVita Food & Drink Festival first began in our Chapel Hill communities in 2010, when food advocate Colleen Minton, launched the festival and began forming partnerships to build one of the best foodie events in a community known for its rich agricultural heritage. It didn’t take long for TerraVita to be named one of the “10 Southern Food Festivals You Need to Taste” by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and “4 Can’t Miss Southern Food Festivals” by PeterGreenberg.com. It earned a reputation as an iconic culinary event in the Southeast because of its commitment to sustainable food and drink. The event brings together award-winning chefs, authors, producers and farmers in unique settings and combinations to talk about issues—and celebrate the land. The Chapel Hill, NC-based festival may be best known for its “Sustainable Classroom” educational experiences featuring renowned chefs, authors and national media. TerraVita strives to produce a zero waste event. In 2018, all events combined produced nearly 3,000 pounds of waste with all composted or recycled except for 40 pounds of trash, resulting in 98.6% waste diversion. Each year, TerraVita works closely with community nonprofits to give back.
Mark your calendar for the 10th Annual TerraVita Food & Drink Festival #TerraVita2019 / October 16–19, 2019
We thank Colleen Minton and team for making this a signature event in Chapel Hill and Carrboro: one that celebrates what this leading college community is all about: authors, chefs, beverage experts and industry luminaries coming together to offer insight about topics that make you think more about where your food and drink come from and what you can do to positively influence the world around you. We hope you’ll consider taking a look at TerraVita, as a future partner, guest and contributor to this important tourism event. Log on here for more information:

A Look Ahead
A look Ahead
Orange County Tourism: Hopes for the Future Orange County continues to be a vibrant and progressive community that is action oriented with an eye to the future and an understanding of the past. The beauty of our region, with its historic university and lively downtowns, beautiful tree-lined streets and artistic vibe continues to attract people throughout the country as a place to visit and live; learn and give back. Our continuing challenge is to maintain, and in some cases improve, the quality of the visitor amenities we have today.
The board of the Chapel Hill/ Orange County Visitors Bureau offers a snapshot of what has surfaced from discussions on local tourism: and some examples of potential opportunities that the board continues to address: Public Meeting Space—what enhancements should occur to make our county’s public meeting space more efficient and beneficial in terms of increased tourism? Youth Sports—we know we are a highly desirable site for youth and amateur sporting events, but do we need more facilities? What would have to happen to increase the number of events we can host
Board of Directors 2017–18 (including representative organizations)
and attendees drawn here for tournaments? Cultural events—what would we have to do to create, support and enhance events of all types to promote them as opportunities for more overnight visitor stays? Destination development—do we need to create something new to drive tourism? A new attraction, activity, facility? The board of the Chapel Hill/ Orange County Visitors Bureau continues to study and work towards answers surrounding these key questions on the future of Orange County’s tourism industry.
