People, Look East – arr. Sandra Eithun Level 1+

CGB1271 2 or 3 octaves handbells, optional tambourine

CGB1272 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells, optional tambourine

This arrangement of the Advent hymn, People, Look East, is ideal for a beginning ensemble or when limited rehearsal time is a factor. Available in compatible settings and rated a level 1+, it includes limited bell changes and an energetic tempo to offer a simple but engaging experience for ringers and listeners. The melody is heard in the treble layer and again in the battery bells giving an opportunity to teach balance between melody and accompaniment. Another layer of energy is added with the jaunty little tambourine part, making this an exciting addition to any Christmas or holiday service, festival or concert.

Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels We Have Heard on High – arr. Cathy Moklebust Level 4-

CGB1283 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 octaves handbells with optional 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 octaves handchimes

Here is a refreshingly new take on the standard, classic carol. Beginning slowly with singing bells, flowing eighth notes and handchimes, the listener can imagine the shepherds’ awe and amazement at the angels’ beautiful song proclaiming the Christ child’s birth. They hurry across the plain to find the child, depicted by malleted and thumb-damped bells in a spirited, rhythmic section in 7/8 time. With an LV eighth note accompaniment under a chordal treble melody sprinkled with a few 16th notes, the final stanza is majestic and full as the shepherds find the holy family and worship their newborn king.

Come, Ye Thankful People, Come – arr. Linda Scholes Level 2+

CGB1278 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells

The stalwart and stately hymn tune, ST. GEORGE’S WINDSOR, is an ideal choice for any Thanksgiving service or time of celebration. This engaging arrangement begins with a majestic introduction that returns as an interlude and also as a glorious ending. The melody moves throughout all octaves. A sprinkling of handbell techniques as well as a waltz-like middle section add interest for both ringers and listeners. This will be a welcome addition to your Thanksgiving library.

These pieces have been carefully written or selected from folk, classical and sacred repertoire in order to approach the teaching of musical expression. In addition to being excellent teaching pieces, they are intended to be fexible for use in a variety of school, festival and sacred settings. As an additional beneft for developing ensembles, they have limited page turns and are available in compatible editions.

For developing ringers, it is very important to move beyond the right notes and rhythms and learn how to make music more expressive. This expressiveness can use elements already addressed in this series and encourage a diferent way of thinking about performing. It could involve tempo, dynamics, articulations, and/or special techniques.

3, 4, 5 or 6 octaves handbells with opt. fute and violoncello, and opt. 3, 4 or 5 octaves handchimes

CGB1250 Full Score | CGB1251 Handbell Score

This well-known hymn tune dates back to the Baroque period, and was used by composers like Bach and Buxtehude even before it was sung in churches with the text “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.” The text is about time; our fleeting time and God’s presence throughout time. Time is portrayed with a bell motive chiming the hour, a lovely countermelody, the constancy of the singing bells, and then the pealing celebratory bells for the final stanza. Besides the varied handbell techniques in the piece, the lovely additions of optional flute and cello add foundational sound and gravity to the piece. “O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, still be our guard while troubles last, and our eternal home!” The flute and cello parts are included in the Full Score.

• This handbell homage to the one and only Aretha Franklin was commissioned by Classical Bells of Detroit to honor her life and incomparable career. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in 1966, this syncopated and upbeat rendition of the popular tune was given a twist by Aretha in October 1968 when I Say a Little Prayer reached number ten on the Hot 100 and number three on the R&B singles chart. This fun and nostalgic addition to your community concert will grab your audience and immediately transport them back to the 1960’s.

Festivity on Cwm Rhondda – arr. Michael Joy Level 3+ (Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah | God of Grace and God of Glory)

CGB1247 3, 4, 5 or 6 octaves handbells with optional unison vocal part

Festivity on Cwm Rhondda is a jubilant level 3+ handbell setting for 3-6 octaves. It is based on the Welsh hymn tune CWM RHONDDA, which is commonly associated with the texts, “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah,” and “God of Grace and God of Glory.” After a fanfare-type opening, the first stanza features an optional unison vocal part. Either text may be sung by ringers alone, congregation/audience alone, or everyone. This joyous setting is suitable for concerts, festivals, and church services.

Community Ensemble Series • In her composition, Scatter the Morning Light, Sandra Eithun has written a beautiful memorial which is both joyful and reflective, perfectly capturing a life well lived! Skillfully utilizing a traditional Celtic tune, this piece is perfect for worship, concert, and celebration of life. In the composition, Sandra recalls the text “Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown,” which narrates the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with the angel and reflecting Tina’s wrestle with cancer. “ … The morning breaks, the shadows flee… ‘tis Love, ’tis Love that wrestled me… ”

This setting of Holst’s tune CRANHAM begins with a solo eighth-note line inspired by the lyrics “snow had fallen, snow on snow,” and is soon joined by whole note chords using tower swings to suggest “frosty winds made moan”. The first appearance of the tune in measure 13 corresponds to the first verse of Christina Rossetti’s poem “In the Bleak Midwinter”. The second appearance of the tune in measure 29 expresses the simplicity of the final verse of the poem.

O Morning Star, How Fair and Bright – arr. Patricia Hurlbutt Level 1+ (O Holy Spirit, Enter In)

CGB1273 2 or 3 octaves handbells

CGB1274 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells

Written in the style of a toccata, this arrangement features long, sustained melodic notes over a busy accompaniment. After a brief chordal section the piece concludes with a joyous pealing of the bells. While it can be played by beginning groups, more advanced ringers can be challenged by using a faster tempo. If desired, another instrument could also double the melody. Compatible editions for 2-3 and 3-5 octaves make this a great choice for festivals and other massed ringing events.

Bay View Week of Handbells series • If you’ve ever had the opportunity to see the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, then you know of the sheer magnitude and stunning beauty this phenomenon provides. Matthew Compton’s original work, Aurora, is part of our new Bay View Week of Handbells Series. It was commissioned by Fred Gramann in honor of his wife, Nancy, and the main melodic theme is a representation of Nancy Gramann’s name. The title Aurora seemed fitting, since the word “aurora” is defined as “dawn.” The dawn of a new day can offer a number of different emotional experiences, including joy, excitement, peace, sorrow, beauty, and reminiscence. This composition presents all of these emotions. Those experiencing the breathtaking sight of the Aurora Borealis may experience a similar range of emotions, either individually or simultaneously.

Meditation on Beach Spring – arr. Karen L. Buckwalter Level 2

CGB1252 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells and optional 3 octaves handchimes

The tune, BEACH SPRING, is commonly found in hymnals paired with various texts including “Wash, O God,Your Sons and Daughters” and “Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service.” This American melody from the mid-1800s is given expressive and sensitive treatment by arranger Karen Buckwalter. Following a quiet and serene opening, it blossoms in the center section with full and beautiful harmonies and then returns to the original serenity of the opening. Perfect for themes of baptism, discipleship and compassion, Meditation on Beach Spring will be a very versatile addition to your handbell library.

Living Water

Living Water – Cathy Moklebust Level 3+

CGB1239 3 or 5 octaves handbells

“Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, ‘rivers of living water will flow from within them.’” This passage from John, chapter 7, illustrates faith in the wonderfully descriptive imagery of a small brook, trickling gently along its stony, wooded path. Gradually it becomes deeper and more active as it flows into a stream, then finally into a vital, rushing river. In this original composition, handbells describe the scenario, starting with a simple melody surrounded by quiet randomly malleted bells, followed by a gently flowing section of moving LV bass underneath the treble melody. Gradually, the music develops into a strong, churning section of LV sixteenth notes, the melody above becoming more and more complex. As the piece draws to a close, it returns to the calmer, gentler sounds of the beginning. Living Water is a creative and thoughtful interpretation of the passage from John, and is appropriate in concert or worship when the focus is on faith and belief.

Procession and Exaltation – Karen L. Buckwalter Level 2+

CGB1290 3, 4 or 5 octaves handbells

Procession and Exaltation may be performed as two separate pieces but was originally designed to be rung as its title suggests. The simple Procession may be easily memorized and flows nicely into Exaltation whenever the processing ringers arrive at the handbell tables. A joyous piece, it is very chordal and offers your handbell choir the opportunity to process on a festive Sunday or for the opening piece of your next concert.

Procession
Procession is designed for ringers to process into the sanctuary (or other room) while ringing. They continue repeating measures 1 and 2 until they are in place at the bell tables. The ostinato layers may be added in any order; however, beginning with the bottom staff (layer 1) and working towards the top staff (layer 8) is suggested. If preferred, some layers may also be combined (started simultaneously), such as layers 2 and 3, layers 4 and 5, and/or layers 7 and 8. When playing Exaltation immediately after Procession, ring measure 5 of Procession and then go directly to measure 2 of Exaltation. To play Procession separately, conclude by ringing measures 3 and 4. Copyright © 2023 Choristers Guild. All rights reserved. Printed in U.S.A. A blizzard rages, complete with the growls and booms of the phenomenon of “Thundersnow” provided by percussion. The blizzard subsides, and we are left with the wondrous beauty of perfectly white mounds and drifts of new snow. Come, Labor On – arr. Sandra Eithun Level 2+

CGB1277 3, 4, 5 or 6 octaves handbells with optional 3 or 4 octaves handchimes

This sturdy and stalwart hymn of the church is full of resolve and color and is perfect for times in services dedicated to themes of stewardship or honoring the works of others. A blend of optional handchimes with the handbells in the thoughtful middle section creates a stunning and inspiring moment of pause before the return of the robust hymn tune. Shakes, echoes, martellato and LV are some of the techniques that are woven into the piece to create a grand setting for worship or festival use.

Bulwarkana – Alex Guebert Level 5

CGB1194 5, 6 or 7 octaves handbells and optional 5, 6 or 7 octaves handchimes

Bay View Week of Handbells series • Alex Guebert’s original work, Bulwarkana, is published in our Bay View Week of Handbells Series. The title Bulwarkana is a blending of “bulwark” and “arcana.” A bulwark is a fortifying wall. Arcana are mysteries; ancient truths that are not understood. In this piece, the strong and militant blends with the mysterious. Bulwark blends with arcana. (The word bulwark is from German roots; arcana comes from Latin -- another blending.) The briefest glimpses of EIN FESTE BURG (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God) are heard in the opening chorale; the text speaks of God being a bulwark who never fails. Near the end, the final strain of EIN FESTE BURG is proclaimed boldly: “His kingdom is forever!” How can we understand the ancient battle between God and the devil? The mysteries are profound.

Bay View Week of Handbells series • The word “Michigan” originally referred to the lake itself, and is believed to come from the Ojibwe word “michi-gami” meaning “great water.” Commissioned for the Bay View Week of Handbells, held on the shores of Lake Michigan, composer Sandra Eithun chose to offer an homage to this beautiful lake and its rich history. Tales of the Great Water is comprised of three short stories. Kinship -The Gathering is a tale of friendship conjuring up images of a place where cultures merged, and people from all over gathered. Shoreline Poem is a tale of longing. So many who settled near the shores of the Great Water, once had a life in another place, perhaps in a distant land. Standing on these remote shores, they can only imagine other places or times. Boundless is a tale of sailing. An adventurous romp on the water awaits our hearty sailors in this tale with stories to tell upon their return. The delightful stories are enhanced with optional flute or violin, drum, chime tree and suspended cymbal.
