I

am always amazed at how our Mane Stage shows bring out the ingenuity, talent and dedication of the men of Chor Leoni. It is a bit of a crazy proposition that, after a demanding season of concerts, the men rally one more time to put on this show full of dancing, costumes, brand new arrangements and general hijinks. But they do. And there is something about putting this show together which gets the jokes within the choir rolling, makes the smiles of the singers shine a bit brighter and gels this community of men in a special way. We hope you, our audience, can feel the fun we have being together and creating this show. We are especially happy to welcome back Red Heartbreaker as our guest artist this year. We are also incredibly honoured to include Corey Payette’s Gimikwenden Ina, from his new musical Children of God, within our Canadiana set, commemorating Canada’s 150th anniversary.

As you will see, tickets for our 2017-18 season are on sale today in the Bard Village, at a special discount for our Mane Stage audience. Next season, our 25th year, will be full of incredible musical moments, including a collaboration with the most decorated a cappella group of all time, TAKE 6. We hope you can take advantage of this special deal and join us for every single note of our silver anniversary.

Gimikwenden Ina is a song from Corey Payette’s musical Children of God, arranged especially for Chor Leoni. In this musical, Tommy and Julia, the children of an OjiCree family, are sent to a residential school in Northern Ontario. As the school tries to “take the Indian out of the child,” Tommy struggles not to forget his language, his family, his culture. This song is written in the Ojibwe language. The Ojibwe are part of the Anishinaabeg group of Indigenous peoples, the 2nd largest in North America. Territories extend from Quebec around the great lakes into the US and to Manitoba. Ojibwe people speak Anishinaabemowin language, which is still widely spoken today, but is in decline. Children of God had its World Premiere in May 2017 at the York Theatre in Vancouver followed by Canada’s National Arts Centre closing the English Theatre season and opening the Canada Scene Festival showcasing some of the most ambitious and celebrated works from across Canada. Corey Payette is proud of his Oji-Cree heritage from Northern Ontario and works as a playwright, actor, composer, and director across Canada. He is the Artistic Director of Urban Ink (Vancouver), and wrote the book/music/lyrics and directed Children of God.

RED HEARTBREAKER Red Heartbreaker has a split musical personality. A classicallytrained mezzo-soprano and flautist, her performance and composing work refuses to be pigeonholed. An award-winning film composer, she creates everything from mock elevator music, challenging feature-length choral scores, and conducting small orchestras. Be it performing her own arrangements of classical music for dance, to singing in ensembles ranging from chamber choirs to rock tribute stage shows, Red is thirsty to keep it fresh and challenging. Nothing is off the table. IAN FARTHING*, DIRECTOR Ian is delighted to be returning to direct the Lions in their annual Bard show for a second year. His recent theatre work includes productions of Jeeves Intervenes, A Christmas Story (Chemainus Theatre Festival), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Gladstone Theatre, Ottawa) and Frost/Nixon (Ensemble Theatre Company), in addition to nine seasons as Artistic Director of the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival in Prescott, ON, where some of his awardwinning productions included Merchant of Venice, Othello, Macbeth and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. In 2014, at the National Arts Centre, he received the Capital Critics Circle Award for Excellence. Upcoming Vancouver productions include A Prayer for Owen Meany (www. ensembletheatrecompany.ca July 8 – August 18) and Bar Mitzvah Boy (www. pacifictheatre.org March 23 – April 14, 2018) *The participation of these Artists are arranged by permission of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association under the provisions of the Dance.Opera.Theatre Policy (DOT).

ERICK LICHTE Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life in North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as conductor for many professional, educational, and amateur choral ensembles. In January of 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Lichte is an active clinician and guest conductor, and is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing. Lichte is a published composer and arranger, especially known for his writing in All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on seven North American tours.

ABOUT CHOR LEONI Known internationally and loved locally, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is recognized as one of the world’s vanguard male vocal ensembles. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty years. Aspiring to the highest professional standards, Chor Leoni performs annually to over 10,000 patrons and is one of the most active amateur choirs in North America. The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In July 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including 1st place trophies in the 19th and 20th Century categories, two Audience Favourite awards, and second place in the competition’s overall Grand Prix. Chor Leoni’s most recent recording, Wandering Heart, has been a featured CD for Minnesota Public Radio, WFMT Chicago, and received a perfect, fivestar rating from the UK’s Choir and Organ magazine.
