Brothers in Arms by Tiko Kerr 2015, Paper collage, 27” x 28”

In collaboration with Chor Leoni, renowned artist Tiko Kerr created original artwork for our 2015/16 season. Inspired by our concert themes, Tiko used a process he call “the musicality of seeing” to envision these beautiful works. “Chor Leoni’s Remembrance Day concert has always struck me with a profoundly masculine and dignified grace,” says Tiko. “When I close my eyes and I let these magnificent voices wash over me, I see majestic tones of violet warmed by the rich orange glow of autumn fires and of pumpkins in the harvest field.” This work is on display in the lobby. Because Tiko has generously donated this piece to Chor Leoni, you have an opportunity to own an original artwork by one of Canada’s foremost contemporary artists. For information, please talk to Production Manager David Carpenter in the lobby following the performance, or call the Chor Leoni office at 604.263.7061.

W

elcome to Chor Leoni’s 2015/16 season and 23rd annual Remembrance Day Concert. The choir is privileged to sing today in honour of our service men and women and, especially, the families of our brave soldiers. The Lions have an exciting and busy start to their season. We hope you were able to join us last week for our collaboration with Ballet BC. Working with one of Canada’s finest dance companies was a thrill for us and we look forward to many more interesting and challenging collaborations in the future. In three weeks time, Chor Leoni will once again take the stage at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for an encore performance of All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914. This fully staged a cappella musical was a sold out sensation last season and you, are audience, demand that we remount this moving production. We believe that All is Calm is the perfect kick off for your holiday season and will fill you with a renewed spirit of the season. Then at the end of December, we hope you join us to celebrate Christmas with Chor Leoni, our collection of gorgeous sacred works and rollicking carols. The concert will span millennia and continents with doo-wop arrangements, spirituals and even mediaeval music accompanied by a junkyard percussion section.

As always we thank you for your support and your love of this choir. These men are proud to sing for and represent Vancouver. We simply couldn’t do this without you, our amazing audience.

TEXTS & TRANSLATIONS De Profundis

A Dirge for Two Veterans

Out of the depths have I cried to thee. Lord, hear my prayer.

The last sunbeam Lightly falls from the finish’d Sabbath, On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking, Down a new-made double grave.

Omnium Deliciarum All happiness and pomp come to a short end. Death, sorrow, mourning, and fearfulness pervade all. In the final hour, everything will be lost: trumpet, flute and harp, jokes, laughter, melody and harmony.

Twelve O’clock Chant Hold me hard light, soft light hold me, Moonlight in your mountains fold me, Sunlight in your tall waves scald me, Deathlight in your darkness weild me.

I see a sad procession, And I hear the sound of coming full-key’d bugles, All the channels of the city streets they are flooding, As with voices and with tears. I hear the great drums pounding, And the small drums steady whirring And every blow of the great convulsive drums, Strikes me through and through.

In burlap bags the bankers sew me, In countries far the merchants sell me, In icy caves the princes throw me, In golden rooms the doctors geld me, In battlefields the hunters rule me.

For the son is brought with the father, (In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell, Two veterans son and father dropt together, And the double grave awaits them.)

I will starve till prophets find me, I will bleed till angels bind me Still I sing till churches blind me, Still I love till cog-wheels wind me.

Now nearer blow the bugles, And the drums strike more convulsive, And the daylight o’er the pavement quite has faded, And the strong dead-march enwraps me.

Hold me hard light, soft light hold me, Moonlight in your mountains fold me, Sunlight in your tall waves scald me. Deathlight in your darkness wield me.

O strong dead-march you please me! O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me! O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial! What I have I also give you.

—Leonard Cohen

The moon gives you light, And the bugles and the drums give you music, And my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans, My heart gives you love.

The Road is Too Long The road is too long, the sky is too vast. The wandering heart is homeless at last. —Leonard Cohen

Absalon fili mi Absalon my son, if only I had died instead of you, Absalon! I shall live no more, but go down to hell, weeping.

4

Lo, the moon ascending, Up from the east the silvery round moon, Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon, Immense and silent moon.

—Walt Whitman

Last Letter Home I searched all my life for a dream and I found it in you. I would like to think I made a positive difference in your lives. I will never be able to make up for the bad. I am so sorry. The happiest moments in my life all deal with my little family. I will always have with me the small moments we all shared. The moments when you quit taking life so serious and smiled. The sounds of a beautiful boy’s laughter or the simple nudge of a baby unborn. You will never know how complete you have made me. You opened my eyes to a world I never dreamed existed. Dakota, you are more son than I could ever ask for. You have a big beautiful heart. I will always be there in our park when you dream, so we can still play. I hope some day you will have a son like mine. I love you Toad. I will always be there with you. I’ll be in the sun, shadows, dreams, and joys of your life. Bean, I never got to see you but I know in my heart you are beautiful. I have never been so blessed as I was on the day I met Melissa Dawn Benfield. You are my Angel, soulmate, wife, lover, and best friend. I am so sorry. I did not want to have to write this letter. There is so much more I need to say. So much more I need to share. A lifetime’s worth. I married you for a million lifetimes. That’s how long I will be with you. Please find it in your heart to forgive me for leaving you alone. Do me one favor, after you tuck the children in, give them hugs and kisses from me. Go outside and look at the stars, and count them. Don’t forget to smile.

—Private First Class Jesse Givens

Brothers in Arms These mist-covered mountains are a home now for me, But my home is the lowlands and always will be. Someday you’ll return to your valleys and your farms And you’ll no longer burn to be Brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction, baptisms of fire I’ve witnessed your suffering as the battle raged higher. And though they did hurt me so bad in the fear and alarm You did not desert me my brothers in arms. There’s so many different worlds, so many different suns, And we have just one world, but we live in different ones. Now the sun’s gone to hell and the moon riding high Let me bid you farewell, every man has to die. But it’s written in the starlight and every line in your palm We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms.

ABOUT CHOR LEONI

K

nown internationally and loved locally, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is recognized as one of the vanguard male vocal ensembles in North America. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty years. Chor Leoni performs in many languages and styles and genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain.

The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In July 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including 1st place trophies in the 19th and 20th Century categories, two Audience Favourite awards, and 2nd place in the competition’s overall Grand Prix. The choir has been voted the Best Local Classical Vocal Ensemble by the readership of the Georgia Straight for the past two years. Chor Leoni prides itself on its musical ambassadorship for Vancouver and Canada and has performed at major music festivals and concert venues across Canada and the United States. Internationally, the choir has shared its music in Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Chor Leoni has been a champion of new music and has commissioned hundreds of pieces for male choir, ranging from pop and folksong arrangements to modern works. The ensemble has commissioned works by notable composers such as riks Ešenvalds, Imant Raminsh, Stephen Chatman, Bruce Sled, Malcolm Forsyth, Jocelyn Morlock, R. Murray Schafer, Bob Chilcott, Steven Smith, and Peter Togni among others. Believing in the transformative power of male singing, Chor Leoni annually engages young male singers in two successful education programs. PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites some of the most talented male singers from the Lower Mainland to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances and MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) provides an opportunity for teenage boys to come together in all-male choirs to find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture. Chor Leoni was founded in 1992 by Diane Loomer, c.m.

ERICK LICHTE Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life in North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as conductor for many professional, educational, and amateur choral ensembles. In January of 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Lichte is an active clinician and guest conductor, and is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing. Lichte is a published composer and arranger, especially known for his writing in All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on six North American tours.
