Welcome to Cadillac Cathedral, our much-anticipated collaboration with author

Jack Hodgins. Chor Leoni first met Jack at the Vancouver Writers Festival where we backed him up at his sold out Pacific Medley reading. Diane and Jack hit it off and began talking about a program incorporating a purpose-written story read by Jack, with Chor Leoni offering musical interjections and commentary throughout. Thus a project near and dear to Diane’s heart, Cadillac Cathedral, was born. It was her plan that the premiere would be Diane’s first appearance as Conductor Emerita of her beloved lions. Sadly she didn’t see the dream realized, but we are thrilled that you are here to enjoy the rollicking tale of an old hearse rescued from oblivion and an old man given new life along the backroads of Vancouver Island. Sit back and enjoy!

Erick Lichte, Artistic Director

Translations

Ave Maria The angel of God visited Mary and she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Early Music Vancouver

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

G.F. Händel’s “Nine German Arias”

Mary said: see the servant of the Lord. May it happen to me according to your word.

These nine German Arias, which still rank among Händel’s best-kept secrets, offer some of his most joyous & profound music for solo voice.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. And the Word became flesh and lived among us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Holy Mary, pray for us now and in the hour of our death. Amen.

Frè O O Brother, you tell us your sickness will not be healed. We are playing (the drums and singing) and weeping. You are sick — I will tell the others. We are playing the drums and singing to Papa Dambala! We are asking Papa Dambala to look after us. We all sing to Ayida Wedo: “See your children!”

Trinque L’Amourette On the way home from the bakery, (a toast to love and let’s go dance) on my way I met, his son Ti-Louis, his happy rolly-polly, Marie my longtime rotund love, a toast to love, to longtime lovers, let’s go dancing, longtime love.

Three well-heeled gentlemen, two on horses and the other on foot. The one on foot asked me where we were going to sleep tonight. “At the house we usually do,” you lied to the honest gentleman. We will sleep in the chicken house where the cocks and hens will .... on your head.

Known internationally and loved locally, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is recognized as one of the vanguard male vocal ensembles in North America. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty years. Chor Leoni performs in many languages and styles and genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain. The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level, including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In July 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Cano Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including 1st place trophies in the 19th and 20th Century categories, two Audience Favourite awards, and 2nd place in the competition’s overall Grand Prix. Chor Leoni prides itself on its musical ambassadorship for Vancouver and Canada and has performed at major music festivals and concert venues across Canada and the United States. Internationally, the choir has shared its music in Italy, Croatia, Bosnia, and the Czech Republic. Chor Leoni has been a champion of new music and has commissioned hundreds of pieces for male choir, ranging from pop and folksong arrangements to modern works. The ensemble has commissioned works by notable composers, such as Robert Sund, Stephen Chatman, Bruce Sled, Malcolm Forsyth, R. Murray Schaefer, Bob Chilcott, Stephen Smith, and Peter Togni, among others. Believing in the transformative power of male singing, Chor Leoni annually engages young male singers in two successful education programs. PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites some of the most talented male singers from the Lower Mainland to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances and MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) provides an opportunity for teenage boys to come together in all-male choirs to find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture. Chor Leoni was founded in 1992 by Diane Loomer, C.M., and is currently conducted by Erick Lichte.

Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life of North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as conductor for many professional, educational, and amateur choral ensembles. In January of 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir based in Vancouver, BC. Lichte is an active clinician and guest conductor, and is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing. Lichte is a published composer and arranger, especially known for his writing in All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on five North American tours and will, this year, be presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Jack Hodgins was raised in Merville on Vancouver Island, graduated from the University of British Columbia, and taught high school in Nanaimo for several years before moving to Victoria to teach fiction writing at the University of Victoria. He has published eight novels and three story collections, including Spit Delaney’s Island, The Invention of the World, Broken Ground, Damage Done by the Storm, and The Master of Happy Endings, as well as a travel book Over Forty in Broken Hill and the best-selling book on writing, A Passion for Narrative. His fiction has won the Governor General’s Award, the Canada-Australia Prize, the regional Commonwealth Prize, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Victoria City Butler Prize, amongst others. He has given readings, talks, and workshops across Canada as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, and Mallorca, Spain. In 2009, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. He and his wife Dianne live in Cadboro Bay. They have three adult children and three grandchildren.

Cameron Wilson is a violinist/composer currently residing in Vancouver. He is a member of the classical crossover piano trio Joe Trio, the gypsy jazz quartet Van Django, the Hard Rubber Orchestra and Francophone inspired trio Pastiche. His compositions and arrangements have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles across North America. He has collaborated with CBC storyteller Stuart McLean on A History of Canada and I Remember Wayne, and has recently co-written a film noir opera called Supernatural Noir with playright Kico Gonzalez-Risso. Visit his website at cameronwilsonmusic.com.

Sally Murphy has appeared in opera, concert and recital throughout Canada and the United States, including the role of Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro with Pacific Opera Victoria and Edmonton Opera, as well as numerous appearances with the Victoria Symphony and the Palm Court Orchestra. In addition to a rich and varied performing career, Ms. Murphy teaches choir and French at Oak Bay High School in Victoria. The Men’s Choir at Oak Bay High was one of the first groups to participate in the Chor Leoni PROMYS program and Ms. Murphy is deeply grateful for the mentorship of Diane Loomer and all of the Chor Leoni singers. She is thrilled to be performing with this incredible choir.
