Letter from Bob Rankin, President In Diane’s last report to the board shortly before she passed away, she wrote: “We have created a rather large mandate for ourselves: aiming to be one of the most compelling stars in the choral constellation while still maintaining a significant and closely personal connection to our community and with each other... We must continue to build our solid relationship with the community while also inspiring young men to sing.”

One of Diane’s greatest gifts to us was in giving us the sense of being a family strongly connected to our audience. Our audience members also became part of the ‘family’ and as we grieved our loss we felt totally embraced by them. Their support continued through our transition to Erick’s leadership and continues to grow even stronger. Our audience totalled 6,647 at eleven events during our 20th Anniversary season and we reached hundreds more at our ‘At Home’, the Vancouver International Writers’ Festival and through our participation in public service events such as the CBC Food Bank and the memorial service for Art Philips. Over the years, Diane also inspired hundreds of young men of high school age to experience male choral singing through our PROMYS and MYVoice programs. In 2012-13, ninety-two young men participated. Their comments included later in this report show just how much these programs mean to them. From March to October 2013 the Board, assisted by Rob Gloor of GSI Management, conducted an Executive Director search, developed our five-year Adaptive Strategic Plan and approved a new administrative and governance structure which will provide stability through the next three-year period of organizational development under Erick’s artistic and administrative leadership. Our future looks very bright indeed. My four years as President have encompassed a significant and challenging period for Chor Leoni. As I step down I want to thank all our directors and staff and all who have volunteered their time and energy to this wonderful organization that we all love. Sincerely,
— Bob Rankin, President and Board Chair 2012–2013 Season Highlights July 7: Chor Leoni performs at the Church of San Salvador, Venice

Letter from Erick Lichte, Artistic & Executive Director By all accounts, it has been a year of change for Chor Leoni. That which would have paralyzed other choirs and organizations has, somehow, brought this choir together and has spurred this organization forward. The loss of Diane Loomer in December 2012 still leaves us with a sense of loss and sadness. However, the work Chor Leoni has done since her passing, and the spirit with which they have carried on and excelled is a testament to her work as a conductor and her contribution to our world as a person. We are deeply indebted to Morna Edmundson who was able to cover for me as I prepared to work legally in Canada. The work she and I did in preparation for the Chor Leoni and Friends concert helped it to be a great artistic success and a true moment in time for the organization. This year’s Best of Bard show was a financial success and one of the more joyous and epic outings this concert has ever had. As an organization, I am very proud of the work which has been done on our Strategic Plan. A new mission statement, statement of values and vision has led us to a clear three to five year plan which will guide all aspects of the organization. Though the Executive Director Search Committee was not able to fill the post in the way originally intended, I believe we have arrived at an administrative structure which will serve the organization well and lay a good groundwork for future growth. A big thanks goes out to Bernice Slemko who has ably administered this organization through some amazing times and turbulent change. Most importantly, I am proud of the men of Chor Leoni. Their steadfast dedication to our music, their craft as singers and support of our mission through their time and money are an inspiration.

Richard and Valerie Dunsterville Reflect on Diane & Erick and Chor Leoni Chor Leoni has many supporters who have become regulars at our concerts and special events. At the VIP reception just before our “Chor Leoni & Friends” Concert last March, I had the opportunity to meet Richard and Valerie Dunsterville and thank them for their ongoing support. They have been attending Chor Leoni concerts for many years and have been Nova donors since the program’s inception in 2010. Recently, I asked them what it is that keeps them coming back year after year to our concerts and special events.
Diane and Erick at the ‘At Home with Chor Leoni’ at the home of Peter & Joanne Brown, September 26, 2012
“I am sure that Erick is the right leader for Chor Leoni, and we are lucky to have him. I hope to see a madcap side of him in a concert!” – Richard Dunsterville “I think Erick is going to bring Chor Leoni to its next stage beautifully. I feel the choir is responding very positively to his leadership.” – Valerie Dunsterville
Valerie told me, “Music has always been a great part of my life. The spirit of Chor Leoni, its interaction with the audience, the wonderful voices and Diane’s superb leadership have all contributed to our ongoing love of Chor Leoni.” Richard added, “I am stirred by the superb singing and the Group Spirit of Commitment and Excellence. The men indeed loved and interacted with their fun leader in Diane. I will always remember her sense of the ridiculous at the Bard performances.”
during which we truly did, through her musical choices, feel the tragedy of war, are what I think of when I am reflecting on Diane.” Both Richard and Valerie are confident in Chor Leoni’s future. Richard said, “I am sure that Erick is the right leader for Chor Leoni, and we are lucky to have him. I hope to see a madcap side of him in a concert!” Valerie added, “I think Erick is going to bring Chor Leoni to its next stage beautifully. I feel the choir is responding very positively to his leadership.” To anyone who has never heard of Chor Leoni, Valerie says, “If you would like to spend a few hours with the joy of wonderful voices and special music, you would love to come and listen to a Chor Leoni concert.” Richard adds, “COME to hear and engage with THE BEST MEN’S CHOIR anywhere!!” BR
Following our most recent concert, “Memory Eternal,” many of our audience reflected on our beloved founder, Diane Loomer. Valerie commented, “Diane’s natural sensitivity to the world around her, her incredible knowledge of music and her ability to lead whether it was a fun loving event at the Bard where she always managed to express her true sense of the ridiculous and provide all with fun and laughter, or a solemn November 11th event

Chor Leoni Awards Honorary Life Memberships to Martha Lou “Louie” Henley and Christopher Gaze True and Loyal Friends “Louie” has been a dear friend of Chor Leoni and the Loomers right from the beginning. Her smiles and hugs, cookies and cakes have always brought us cheer. Her love of photography and skill with a camera have resulted in an archive overflowing with photos that have captured most of our musical journey. We love it when she pops into a rehearsal with “goodies” or just to say hello.
“Louie” was awarded the first Honorary Life Membership at our Chor Leoni & Friends concert on March 23.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them unto thy soul with hoops of steel. – Wm. Shakespeare
When Diane passed away last December, “Louie” asked if she could come to share hugs and memories as we met to give each other comfort and face our grief together. She said, “I have made my usual heart-shaped lemon cake with lots of lemon icing. I will also come armed with cookies as the cake isn’t large enough and I don’t think any of us want any food fights!!!!!
Christopher has served on Chor Leoni’s board for many many years and will step down after the 2013 AGM. He was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership on Canada Day during our Best of Bard show.
Chor Leoni has played a major role in my life for a long time. I have loved it all. The singers, the songs, the money we have raised, the profile we have created, the friendships, the Bard shows, the Board work, our wedding, my birthday....the list goes on.
“The void created by our beloved Diane’s death is virtually unfillable so the memories we have will have to sustain us forever. Both my house and my heart are filled with them and I am grateful for that. “I send my love to you and everyone in the choir. “Take care.” – from Louie xoxoxoxo
Diane Loomer was a glorious and great presence in my life, in all our lives - she crafted her precious Chor Leoni and shaped it into the modern miracle that it is. Erick will continue the vision and make it his own. It's all very, very good. Thank you all for allowing me to play my part - I shall not be far away and look forward to maintaining a close and warm friendship. Floreat Chor Leoni! With great affection, Christopher Gaze OBC

Spotlight on Dorothy Chiasson & Jennifer Gaze Two Gems in Chor Leoni’s crown During my four years as president, one of the things I have not had to worry about is the At Home with Chor Leoni event each September. The ‘At Home’ committee has been extremely efficient at planning and organizing and that has largely been to the credit of the two women who have been co-chairing the committee and making sure every last detail gets done. I asked them to tell me what it is that inspires them to come through for Chor Leoni again and again. This is what they wrote: I encountered CL on CBC. I came to one of the first fund raisers at Alix Browns. I met Diane Loomer and offered to help wherever I could. Diane cautioned me and said that this was a commitment I might live to regret, as it is all consuming. I have never regretted this offer. As a member of the committee, we all chose to become “At Home with Chor Leoni” as opposed to a “Gala”. It has become a beloved annual event which constantly brings together old and new in a joyful appreciation of Chor Leoni and all it does for young singers now and for the future. When I was asked to co-chair this event with Jennifer Gaze, it was a gift I could not refuse. Jennifer is a joy in my life and we are a team. For the past, I think five years, we have worked together, each with great enthusiasm and respect for one another. If all this is to the benefit of Chor Leoni and the men I have come to know and love I cannot be more thankful and blessed. Dorothy Chiasson
As everyone knows, Christopher loved Diane Loomer and consequently her husband, Dick. Because of his respect and admiration for what they both had accomplished in creating Chor Leoni and elevating it to one of Vancouver’s most loved choirs, he allowed Chor Leoni to be the only outside organization to perform at Bard on the Beach in the early days. When living on the North Shore, pre-Christopher Gaze days, I would go to Chor Leoni’s Remembrance Day concerts and I fell in love with the gorgeous sounds they produced, not to mention the gorgeous men in their tuxedos! When Christopher and I met and realized we would be wed, Diane immediately offered to have Chor Leoni sing at our wedding (Love and Marriage!) at Christ Church Cathedral – I was on cloud nine! I loved Diane and Dick as much as Christopher did and when Diane and Pete Chamberlain took me for coffee one day and asked me to Chair the ‘At Home’ event, how could I say “no”? Luckily for me, after a couple of years working with the fabulous ‘At Home’ Committee, a woman named Dorothy (unknown to me at the time) offered to help in any way. Great, I said – could you bake some cookies for the event? Little did I know who Dorothy Chiasson was but I soon found out what a dynamo she is. I love Dorothy’s “can do” attitude and attention to all the little details and I love to work with her. She is a true friend in every sense. As I am sometimes known to fly by the seat of my pants, I think the two of us together make a great team. The committee, the whole choir and the Board make it easy for us to work on the ‘At Home’ event – it is such a collaborative affair and a labour of love. I look forward to the pre-event organizational meetings because we all have fun and have enormous respect for one another. We also bring different talents to the tasks at hand. I am continually in awe of how much the men in the choir give of their time, money and effort to make Chor Leoni the world-class choir that it is. I thank all of you for allowing me to be a very small part of this great organization. Jennifer Gaze

2012–2013 Annual Report Chor Leoni Men’s Choir
Hits all the right notes with Participants, Parents and Audience Parents: “It is a terrific Program. ...What I saw during practice and presentation day was nothing short of a small miracle. One single female conductor in total control of 45 teenage boys.... not a step was out of place. All the boys were motivated to be where they were supposed to be and doing their best to hit that note. They were respectful towards each other, the conductor and the Chor Leoni mentors. Practices were up tempo, and fun, correction was done with humour, never negative word was spoken. It was the perfect learning environment to place young men in. The boys, I’m sure didn’t see it a life experience, but it was.” (Gord Maclean) “Thank you also to those who make it possible for those with limited resources, such as ourselves, to participate in this wonderful program. Your very generous assistance makes it possible for Thomas to learn, grow, and develop a part of himself of which he can be proud. You have my sincere gratitude.” (Linda Knoph) Participants: “In MYVoice there is no negativity at all. The singers are all supportive of each other, the conductors much more pleasant, and the atmosphere of people who like to sing and want to be there are just a few of the things that are unrivaled in my choir experience. Without MYVoice I doubt I would have kept singing after my last choir experience, but when I was introduced to the group of people who enjoy singing as much as I do I wanted to start singing again.” (Connor Ramsbottom) “That was fantastic everyone! I am just so proud of how amazing we sounded!” (Will Thomas) Audience Members: “The music was wonderful. The conductors did an amazing job. The whole evening was thrilling. I only wish there could have been an encore.” (Catherine Dixon) “My family and I were in the audience last night...what a wonderful and amazing concert! And what a privilege for the boys to perform with Chor Leoni...we absolutely loved the show...Thank you to everyone who made this happen!!” (Marilyn Nakashima)

2012–2013 Annual Report Chor Leoni Men’s Choir
Financial Report
REVENUE
Financially, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir had a very successful 20th Anniversary 2012-13 season: Our “At Home” fundraising event exceeded expectations, which enabled us to begin a website redesign, as well as establish a Touring Fund to facilitate a major tour in the future. We changed the method for financially recognizing in-kind sponsorships in 2012-13; normalizing for this change, and for the revenues generated for our major tour in 2011-2012, revenue increased approximately 7% in 2012-13. Approximately 36% of our revenues came from ticket sales, CD sales and member dues. The remaining 64% of our income came from the following sources: • 32% from donations and the proceeds from “At Home”; • 14% from corporate and private foundations and sponsorships; • 13% from BC Gaming, Canada Council and local government grants; • 5% from endowment funds where Chor Leoni receives the interest on contributions. We are extremely grateful for these benefactors’ support and generosity. Expenses increased by 14% after normalizing for the 2012-13 sponsorships and 2011-12 tour; this was expected given our investment in our new website and the many activities to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. Total assets grew by $7,329, or 7.6%. The Diane Loomer Commissioning Fund grew to $15,636 which will allow us to commission a major work for men’s choir. The newly-established Touring Fund has a balance of $40,000. Our MYVoice Fund (supporting our education programs) also continues to have a healthy balance. Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is well positioned for 2013-14 and for continued progress toward the organization’s strategic goals.
