SEASON
CHORLEONI.ORG
As a listener and a fan, I have loved Chor Leoni for over twenty years. I have loved the sound of the Lions as they purr and roar. I have loved the group’s willingness to sing every style of music. I have admired the choir’s ability to be true ambassadors of their city, province and country. But mostly, I have loved how they pour their souls into every piece of music they sing, whether it is sombre or silly. Now the spotlight has fallen on Chor Leoni’s 21st Season, and I have the great privilege of announcing it, not as a fan, but as the Lion’s new Artistic Director. Back again are many favourites - our Remembrance Day concerts, our Christmas offerings and the inimitable Bard on the Beach spectaculars. New this year are two collaborations, the first with
author Jack Hodgins and a folksy musical reading of his new story Cadillac Cathedral. The second is with our sisters of Elektra as we present two of the most affecting works of the last decade in our Passion and Resurrection choral event. I believe we have something for everyone this year, and it is my hope you do not miss a single note of this year’s season. I am so excited to continue to share the spirit and music of Chor Leoni with you and to begin a bright new chapter for Vancouver’s singing Lions.

Remembrances and memories: they inform us, teach us, and unite us in times of joy and sorrow. Memory Eternal explores these themes in a diverse and expansive program that includes works by Dominick Argento, Johannes Brahms, Arvo Pärt, Billy Joel, Iron and Wine as well as Haitian folk songs and Indian Ragas. The concert will include readings and end with Rupert Lang’s beloved Kontakion. Memory Eternal is offered in the spirit of consolation that has made our Remembrance Day concerts a Canadian tradition.

Here’s a recipe for a rollicking good show. Take renowned Canadian author Jack Hodgins, put him on stage reading a story he’s written especially for this occasion, back him up with the men of Chor Leoni, together with fiddler Cam Wilson and his band, mix well with some favourites from the choir’s repertoire, plus new tunes written by Cam and, voilà, Cadillac Cathedral, a deliciously funny and moving tale about an old hearse rescued from oblivion and an old man given new life along the backroads of Vancouver Island. Only one performance each in Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo. Don’t miss it!

Two of Canada’s top choirs, Chor Leoni and Elektra, come together to present a program of powerful choral masterpieces from the past decade that view the traditional Passion story through a modern lens. David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Little Match Girl Passion draws its text and inspiration from the unlikely pairing of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of The Little Match Girl and J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. In this emotionally charged work, the pain and longing of a homeless girl is transfigured into a human Passion story for our own time and place. Rising young choral star Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Passion and Resurrection is a fiery, sumptuous, and ecstatic setting of the Passion for choir and string orchestra with soprano soloist. In this work, Ešenvalds has combined texts from Byzantine traditions as well as the Old and New Testament and has created one of the most powerful and immediate choral works ever written.

From One Singular Sensation to One is the Loneliest Number, the idea of “one” has infused our musical culture. Chor Leoni closes the season on the Bard stage with Manely #1’s, an exploration of the concept of “#1.” Number one pop hits, an artist’s first song, and showstoppers from top Broadway shows are grist for the madcap collective creativity that is Chor Leoni. Expect the unexpected and join us for memorable music, comedic turns, and stylish choreography. This is one show not to miss!
