It is often said that we are the sum of our memories. All that we have done, thought and felt stays with us and shapes us into the people we are and the people we want to become. It is also through our memories that we can keep the spirit and deeds of others alive, both in our hearts and in our actions. It is in this spirit that Chor Leoni’s 21st annual Remembrance Day concert not only celebrates the memory of soldiers who have given their lives, but also the extraordinary people we hold in our hearts who are no longer with us. This year, our concert certainly explores some of the sorrow of loss but also, and more importantly, the bittersweet joy of remembrance. It is our hope that these songs may shine light and life onto your own remembrances. We hope these memories will inform you, guide you and comfort you and that within them, all may live eternally.
Erick Lichte, Artistic Director
Translations Vechnaya pamiat Memory eternal. Sydämeni laulu poetry by Aleksis Kivi Grove of Tuoni, grove nocturnal! Finest sand for sleep eternal, safe for my baby to slumber. May my child have pleasant hours, in the Dark Lord’s fields and bowers, tending the cattle of Tuoni. May my child have pleasant hours, falling fast asleep ’midst flowers, rock’d by the gentle Dark Lady. Happy darling in safekeeping, in a golden cradle sleeping, hearing the song of the nightjar. Grove of Tuoni, grove of calmness! Far away from worldly madness, far from all strife and beguiling.
De Profundis From the depths, I have cried out to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If you, Lord, were to mark iniquities, who, O Lord, shall stand? For with you is forgiveness; and because of your law, I stood by you, Lord. My soul has stood by his word. My soul has hoped in the Lord. From the morning watch, even until night, let Israel hope in the Lord. For with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Frè O O Brother, you tell us your sickness will not be healed. We are playing (the drums and singing) and weeping. You are sick — I will tell the others. We are playing the drums and singing to Papa Dambala! We are asking Papa Dambala to look after us. We all sing to Ayida Wedo: “See your children!” Laß dich nur nichts nicht dauren translation by Paul Flemming Do not be sorrowful or regretful; be calm, as God has ordained, and thus my will shall be content. What do you want to worry about from day to day? There is One who stands above all who gives you, what is yours. Only be steadfast in all you do, stand firm; what God has decided, that is and must be the best. Amen.
Erick Lichte Artistic Director
Founded in 1992 by Diane Loomer, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir is directed by award-winning conductor Erick Lichte. Chor Leoni is regarded as a leader in the Canadian male choir movement, and its concert and outreach programs have been emulated across the country. The choir is renowned for reaching across the footlights and transforming the performance from “concert” to “conversation.” Chor Leoni prides itself on its ability to perform in many languages and styles, moving across musical genres, always aiming to communicate, engage, and entertain. Beloved locally and renowned internationally, the choir has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level, and has represented Canada in the European Broadcasting Union’s Let the Peoples Sing international choral competition. In July 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Cano Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including two Audience Favourite awards, a special prize for the Most Interesting Artistic Program, and second place overall. The choir’s extensive catalogue of recordings includes CDs honoured with awards from the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors and the Western Canadian Music Awards. Chor Leoni’s Healing Voices CD was produced for use in hospice and palliative care, and has been widely recognized for its powerful role in therapy. The organization is committed to fostering young composers and conductors, and trains young male singers through two celebrated initiatives: PROMYS (PROgram for Mentoring Young Singers) invites talented singers from surrounding high schools to join with Chor Leoni in rehearsals and performances of their annual Remembrance Day concerts; and MYVoice (Mobilizing Young men’s Voices) provides an opportunity for teenage boys to come together in all-male choirs to find their changed voices, develop their confidence, and nurture their interest and commitment to music and culture.
Erick Lichte has carved out a distinct niche in the vocal music world and concert life in North America. The Washington Post has hailed the “audacity” of his programming, the Chicago Tribune has noted the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs and Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over sixty concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. As a choral conductor, Lichte has served as conductor for many professional, educational, and amateur choral ensembles. In January of 2013, he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir based in Vancouver, BC. Lichte is an active clinician and guest conductor, and is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing. Lichte is a published composer and arranger, especially known for his writing in All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on five North American tours and will, this year, be presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
