Welcome to the 2011 Canalway Cavalcade, which has been organised annually by The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) volunteers since 1983. This festival weekend is the pinnacle of a week of London celebrations – Easter, St George’s Day, and the Royal Wedding – but just the beginning of the event calendar for the IWA. A charity formed more than 50 years ago, the IWA campaigns for the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of the inland waterways. It believes that canals and rivers are everyone’s to enjoy and it works to preserve the heritage and ecology of the system. There are nearly 3000 miles of waterways in the British system – about 100 miles in London alone. ‘London – a waterways island’ is the theme of this year’s festival, which celebrates London as an island, a city which is surrounded by water on all sides with the River Thames in the south and the Grand Union and Regent’s Canals to the north: a blue ribbon encompassing the capital. And some 150 boats have travelled here from all over Britain using that intricate waterways system. They’ve brushed and burnished, painted, polished and hung out the bunting on their beautiful craft – just for you – making Cavalcade such a lively, colourful sight, right here in the heart of London. Whether you’ve travelled to Cavalcade from near or far, are a boater, a resident or a visitor you’ll find it’s chock full of fun stuff for everyone to enjoy. We’ve got trade stalls selling everything from boats to bric-abrac; lots of music and Morris men; activities for the kids like bubble-blowing and Punch and Judy; real ale, snacks and lots, lots more. Throughout the weekend we have a variety of entertainments for you. Many of the performances are given at a reduced fee in order to maximise the money we raise for the causes we support. Graham Nunn and The Church Army welcome visitors, children or adults, for a chat on their boat Narrow Escape on the Stone Wharf.
Throughout the weekend there will be an exhibition of children’s art at the management offices of PaddingtonCentral, Sheldon Square. This is from a competition run by PaddingtonCentral and Paddington Waterside Partnership with local schools on the theme Paddington Goes to the Carnival. We have organised a range of kids’ activities (including Punch & Judy and Bubble of Fun), details of which can be found on page 9. You can collect more information about these activities from our Information Points - one on the South Towpath in the Pool and the other on the Paddington Towpath, near the pedestrian bridge. There will also be music - of all genres - being played around the site: by the Horse Bridge, on the pontoon in the Pool and on the Stone Wharf. In addition, during the Festival, the Puppet Theatre Barge will be performing their Puppet Shows Brer Rabbit and The Tar Baby at 15:00 daily aboard May Brent on the North Towpath. There are plenty of activities for children during the Festival starting with a display from an art competition that took place in Edward Wilson School, Westminster prior to the weekend. This was on the theme ‘Paddington Goes to the Carnival’. The display of the children’s contributions can be found facing outwards from the PaddingtonCentral office throughout the weekend. This is marked on the site plan with a Paddington Bear. Other activities will be situated around the site and will include games, craft activities, Punch and Judy, kayaking, pirates, trails, water safety and, on the Sunday afternoon, a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Information can be collected from either of our two Information Points, one on the South Towpath and the other on the Paddington Towpath near the pedestrian bridge (see also pages 6 and 7).
The Stone Wharf and Rembrandt Gardens
There will be some children’s workshops in the Entertainments Marquee on all three days (see pages 4 and 5 for timings) and the Church Army are organising children’s activities by their boat ‘Narrow Escape’ on the Stone Wharf. They will also be running the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at 3:00 pm on Sunday in Rembrandt Gardens (if wet, in the Entertainments Marquee on the Stone Wharf). Punch and Judy Shows and ‘Bubble of Fun’ walking on water can also be found in Rembrandt Gardens.
Paddington Towpath ‘Beauchamp’ Floating Classroom
The Floating Classroom is moored under the Westway, by Sheldon Square. There will be a selection of fun, hands-on activities for children to do including workshops in giant bubble-making and arts and crafts as well as reptile and amphibian shows.
Pirates!
Children will have the chance to try kayaking on the arm of the canal beside the Paddington Towpath, near Bishop’s Bridge, thanks to the Pirate Club of the Pirate Castle in Camden. Life jackets and full instruction will be provided. You can also go on board their narrowboat ‘Pirate Viscount’ and learn more about the activities at the Pirate Castle.
Tideway Adventurers
This a voluntary organisation providing low cost opportunities for children, young people and community groups to go afloat. They have one of their narrowboats ‘Merlin’ here and a stand on the Paddington Towpath. -9-

The following will be presented this year: The Roger Squires Trophy: Presented by St Pancras Cruising Club in recognition of Roger’s 10 years as their Commodore, it is awarded to the best novice competitor in the Boat Handling Competition which, this year, is sponsored by Porter & Co.
The Marcus Boudier Trophy: For the best decorated privately entered boat in Saturday’s Pageant. The Ray Dunford Buckby Can Trophy: For the best decorated boat entered by a waterway or community group. The Cruise Electric Trophy: For the best illuminated boat in Sunday evening’s Procession. The Graham Capelin Award: For the best entry by a boater who has not previously taken part in either the Saturday Pageant or Illuminated Boats. Arthur Farrand Radley MBE 1916 - 2010
It was with great sadness that we all said goodbye to Farrand, as he was known in IWA circles, at the beginning of November 2010. He had reached the magnificent age of 94 and died following a short illness with Laura his wife beside him.
I first met Farrand in 1982 when he was chairman of the London branch of IWA, He was an impressive figure, immensely knowledgeable with great attention to detail, a good sense of humour and a genuine interest in all his volunteers. Farrand was London branch chairman during National Waterways Fortnight in 1983 and started Canalway Cavalcade at Little Venice as part of this campaign. He originally got me involved for the Westminster 400 celebrations in 1985 which we worked on together. He was an excellent communicator at all levels. As well as dealing with the ‘great and the good’ he always had time for the children. Over the years he was a regular judge of teddy bear drawings and ‘furthest travelled’ bears at the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. He showed a great interest in each child and talked to them about all the places they had seen on the canal. In 1996 Farrand was presented with the Cyril Styring award by the Inland Waterways Association. This is awarded ‘For an IWA member who has, in the opinion of the Trustees, made an outstanding contribution in furthering the Association’s campaign’. Farrand had been one of our Region vice-presidents and a very active one too until a stroke eight years ago left him less able to take an active part. However, he made a remarkable recovery and, despite a further stroke and many other medical problems, his determination and the love of his wife Laura - who he married when he was 81 years old - had kept him going. In recent years Farrand has loyally attended Canalway Cavalcade every year except the one when he was in Austria celebrating a friend’s 90th birthday! As London Region vice-president he continued to take part in the opening ceremony, introducing speakers and speaking himself until he had the stroke and was no longer able to do this. He had continued to attend the reception and opening ceremony and we will greatly miss him this Saturday. We plan to have some appropriate event or award at Canalway Cavalcade to acknowledge Farrand’s very special contribution to the event both in its beginnings and throughout its history. We have two 70 ft long steel narrowboats, the 12 berth Theo and the 10 berth Merlin, which are both moored at Mile End, East London, on the Regent’s Canal. There is a skipper’s cabin at the stern of each boat with an extra berth in each. Both vessels are self-catering with a fully stocked galley. An extra daily fee will be charged if we provide the skipper. The boats are booked by youth clubs, community groups, projects, school parties, uniformed groups and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants. Both boats are available for day/weekly journeys and residential weekends. Groups wishing to operate the boat themselves will need to hold the Certificate in Community Boat Management. The project does not supply bedding, tea towels or waterproofs. Both boats carry the relevant number of life jackets.

towpath walks If Cavalcade has excited your interest in London’s canals then you might want to explore further. IWA volunteer guides support The Towpath Walks Society, which arranges a regular series of guided walks along the city’s canals in association with London Walks. They last just over two hours and take place on two Sunday afternoons each month, and some Tuesday evenings in summer. The walks start and finish at a tube or DLR station and cost £8 with concessions £6. You can even join one during the Festival Sunday which leaves Kensal Green Station at 2:30 pm.
